Local Heros, Serving Heros Portland last week to bring some holiday cheer into the lives of veterans recuperating from illness and injury.

The group of local youth, ages 10-18, meet three times a month at the Mill City Christian Church for an evening of fellowship, singing, knitting, playing games and sharing in a supper made by a group of dedicated volunteers.

“Hard to say how many kids show up every week,” said Loretta Benjamin, one of the coordinators, “Last week we had 46.”

The kids and some adults, had been making hand knitted hats, lots of hats, with the goal to bring as many as possible to the veterans in time for the holidays. Thanks to

knit hats, plus 16 hand tied polar fleece blankets.

“Cora was running a sweatshop at her house. If you walked in the door she’d have you making a hat!,” laughed Benjamin.

Nordmo was inspired to give back to veterans after caring for her own grandfather last year in the same hospital.

Several of the knitters, pictured here, joined youth pastor Matthew Shepherd on Friday as a reward to present their work to the VA. “They were welcomed warmly with true appreciation,” said Benjamin.

The funds raised during this event go towards the training of volunteers, new equipment, repair of older equipment, medical supplies and also the annual 4th of July Fireworks.

Santa to visit Mill City tree lighting ceremony

The City of Mill City will be hosting its third annual Christmas Tree Lighting Event on Sunday, December 7 at 5pm at City Hall (444 S 1st Avenue). Doors open at 4:30pm.

The City will be partnering with local community groups and businesses to bring this wonderful event to our citizens. The community Chorus will be there to bring you songs of the season and we are hoping to have Santa stop in for a visit as well So mark your calendars and be sure to bring your family to this great annual event!

Local resident: Don’t blindly trust your GPS I enjoyed your Volume 5, Issue 46 story about the SUV stuck in the snow after getting led astray by their GPS. A few years ago a friend from up north was driving to see us on the North Fork. Her GPS directed her to head south from Scotts Mills and over Evans Mtn. Shop at home for the holidays: Stayton Chamber puts together shop hop with award prizes

Instead of heading into the big city for your holiday shopping this year, local merchants want you to shop closer to home. When you shop local, more of your money stays in the local economy. For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community.

When you spend that same $100 at a chain store only $43 stays in the community, according to Civic Economics – Andersonville Study of Retail Economics.

Shopping local creates jobs in the community. According to the Small Business Association, small firms accounted for 64 percent of the net new jobs created between 1993 and 2011. Not only are the business owners your friends and neighbors, but the people that they employ are also.

“Shopping local has always been a priority for me because I want to sustain a strong economy in our community. They offer everything I need, so I don’t need to leave and go far away to do most of my shopping,” says Tass Morrison, President of the Stayton Sublimity Chamber Board of Directors.

Shopping locally avoids crowded malls and long waits in checkout lines. Instead you have a chance to see your neighbors as you browse and catch up with friends.

Shopping local supports the entrepreneurial spirit. Small business owner often start out with a dream and their shop is that dream come to life.

“I shop local because that’s what our country was founded on: local, independent businesses. I love giving back,” says Paula Newman, co-owner of Figaro’s Pizza in Shopping local this year can win you cash in your pocket. Local merchants, along with the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce, are gathering together to promote local shopping with

Positive Parenting Tip of the Week

The Canyon Weekly is always on the lookout for positive parenting tips. This week we visited the house of Todd and Elizabeth Reeser of Mill City and asked them how their kids rooms were so amazingly tidy. Elizabeth Reeser introduced me to the Cell Phone Coffin (pictured below). This is the cell phone and iPod coffin rule: “In the Reeser home, cell phones and iPods are a privilege, not a “right”. Our children turn their electronics into the cell phone and iPod coffin when the get home from school. They can have them back when their chores and homework are done. They go back in the box again during dinner and at 9pm on school nights.”

“We do this to positively teach responsibility and to maintain healthy verbal communication with our children. It’s official: certified election results mean new mayor, new council members for Mill City

Press release - The City of Mill City is pleased to announce the certified results of the November 2014 election.

The candidates for the office of Mayor and three council positions were elected into the open seats.

The results are as follow: • Mayor Thorin F. Thacker 2 year term • Councilor M. Susann Heller 4 year term • Councilor Penny A. Keen 4 year term • Councilor Fred C. Smith 4 year term Mayor Elect Thacker has served the City of Mill City as a City Councilor for four years. ThisJanuary he will take the office and begin his duties in the office of Mayor. Mr. Thacker’s term will expire in 2016.

Councilwoman Elect M. Susann Heller began her service as an appointed member of the Council with the resignation of another.

Ms. Heller will resume her seat

on the council until 2018.

Councilwoman Elect Penny A. Keen comes to the public seat after living in the community her entire life. Ms. Keen has been involved in other areas within the community including Mill CityVolunteer Fire Department. Ms. Keen’s term will expire in 2018.

Councilman Elect Fred Smith has lived in the community for over 20 years, along with his wife, Linda. Mr. Smith has been a member of the Council since 2010 after being elected into his seatand will resume his duties as Councilor thru the end of 2018.

Please join us January, 13, 2015, 6:30pm during the swearing in of our newly elected council. Mill City Council meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month beginning at 6:30pm.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Come share your thoughts and let your elected officials know if there is anything they can do for you.

Early days in the Canyon: A tight knit community of Bohemian bands, Scarlet Fever & dynamite This is the second part of three segments, highlighting the history of the Rada Family in Mill City. This story is inspired by the book “Singing my Song, Growing Up in a Lumber Town, Mill City, Oregon” by Ed Rada.

By Diane Moore The family of Frank and Rosalie Rada had been in Dezanovec, Yugoslavia for just a few months and Frank was discovering that he had to work very hard for a subsistence living. The first few months of their stay had been spent trying to help son Rudy recover from scarlet fever and pneumonia.

The couple began to consider returning to Mill City, Oregon. During the winter of 1920/21, now with Mary safely back in the family, they returned to Mill City. They temporarily moved in with the Moravec family who were relatives of Frank Rada.

Frank Rada was once again working very hard but with this time with the goal of bettering life for his family. He purchased a home on the Marion County side of the river on the corner of 7th and Alder.

As he was able, he began to add parcels of land to the property. As he added acreage to his small farm, he was able to have room for dairy cows, chicken, a large garden, a barn back against the hill, (which was converted into the Martin Hansen home later) and several outbuildings. Soon he was milking and taking care of cows before he went to work at the mill and milking again in the evening when he came home. He also took care of yard and garden before his children were old enough to help out. Photos which were taken of the children standing in the yard show a lush garden and neat lawn. Garden produce and milk were sold from the small farm. The family water came from springs coming down the hill at the back of the property.

This system often required modification and improvement.

Frank Rada also added 3 rental homes on Alder Street to help with family income. After Highway 22 cut through

his farm, he built what was then the Deerhorn Motel. His mother, Rosalie was not happy with the Deerhorn project. She knew her h u s b a n d ’s temperament was not geared to dealing with the public or with government regulations and besides, the motel had taken a great deal of family money. Eventually, the motel was sold to Frank Rada’s brother, Louis.

The Czech community of Mill City provided social outlets for the Rada family.

This community included Podrabskys, Fencls, Stodolas, Blazeks, Kazdas, Novaks, Dolzals, Dvoraks, Drapelas, Moravecs. Tomans, and Fishers. Gatherings would take place at the Bohemian Hall which was on the Fencl farm There was a Bohemian band for a period of time also.

Every 4th of July, the band members would wake up the town with a dynamite explosion and then serenade with patriotic and other numbers. They would have stationed themselves up near the water tower on the Marion County side of the river. No different from any other immigrant group, the Czech members of the community pretty much stayed together due to difficulties in speaking English and to give each other support. It was in this environment that Eddie Rada grew up and this community that he loved.

Many Mill City residents can still recall Stewart’s Grocery at 158 SW Broadway St. painted boldly across the side of the building were the words, “If we ain’t got it, you don’t need it!” It was a fairly true statement as once you walked in the doors you were overwhelmed by all the necessities that could be fit under one roof.

Today that same saying could ring true for the Canyon Gleaners that now occupies the same space. There are shelves of old oil lanterns, knickknacks, kitchen gadgets, toys tools and rows stacked high with furniture. Dorothy L. Reiges (Dottie) November 5, 2014 - November 9, 1945

Dorothy passed peacefully from this life November 5, 2014 in her home surrounded by family.

Dottie bravely and with dignity battled dementia for eight years before passing into eternal life with God. Born September 15, 1920, in Pensacola, Florida, Dottie was one of four children of Algie Mae and Hugh Frederick Weaver. Dottie spent her formative years in Montgomery, Alabama until she was joined in marriage to Bennie (Ben) J. Reiges on November 9, 1945. Theirs was a marriage of unwavering commitment, loyalty, love and laughter. They were to celebrate their 69th anniversary this month.

Soon after their marriage, Ben and Dottie moved to Pensacola, Florida and Dottie called that area her home for more than 50 years. Later she lived in Oregon and then moved to Coronado in 1998 where she lived the remainder of her life.

Dottie had strong family values and nothing mattered more to her than her family. She valued being a mother, grandmother and wife above all else.

She considered her family her most cherished accomplishment. She was also the best friend one could have. She had deep and enduring friendships throughout her life. Dottie had a vivacious and vibrant personality and you were always uplifted in her presence. She touched all of us with her caring and kindness, always giving of herself. We are sure she is in Heaven right now watching over and protecting us.

Obituary Dottie enjoyed life to the fullest. As a teenager she was an adagio dancer and continued dancing throughout her life. She was an active member of the Krewe of Marionettes, crowned Queen during the annual Pensacola Mardi Gras celebration.

Dottie was an avid and competitive bridge player, and won the annual “Bridge on the Bridge” competition in Stayton, Oregon. Aside from her social activities, Dottie was also active in her local community as a Red Cross volunteer and worked for the Pensacola Mental Health Association for many years.

Dottie is survived by her beloved husband, Bennie, and two daughters, Nancy Reiges Toennies (Pete), Penny Reiges Johnson; four grandchildren, Jay Johnson, Jarred Johnson, Daniel Toennies and Kimberly Toennies and several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Dottie was predeceased by her parents and siblings. A private graveside service and Life Celebration for family and friends will be held for Dottie. Christmas tree permits now available at local businesses Christmas tree permits are, or will soon be, available at all Willamette National Forest Ranger District offices Holiday enthusiasts looking for the perfect tree will also be able to purchase permits from local vendors.

Forest Service permits are $5 each. They allow the holders to cut one tree on designated areas of Forest Service managed lands; each household can purchase a maximum of five permits.

BLM permits are $5.50 each and this year covers an area south of Dexter; each household can purchase up to three permits.

When heading out to collect your tree, don’t be fooled by nice weather at valley-level elevations. Weather conditions in the mountains can 6

be drastically different and include freezing temperatures and snow. You should prepare for the unexpected; bring a handsaw or axe as well as winter clothing and safety equipment. Tire chains and a shovel are also recommended, as is extra food, drinking water, blankets, a flashlight, first aid kit, and survival gear. Tree cutting and travel may take longer than anticipated, so notify a friend or family member where you’re going, get an early start, and leave the woods well before dark. “Going into the woods to find the family Christmas tree is a great way to experience your National Forest,” said Tim Lahey, Forest Products Program Manager for the Willamette National Forest. “To make it a

fun and safe experience, please check the current weather conditions before heading out. If you have additional concerns, contact your local Ranger Station for more information.” To keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard, leave it outside until you’re ready to move it indoors. Cut the trunk at an angle before placing it in the stand and remember to refill the stand reservoir daily. Visitors can purchase permits and receive maps of cutting areas at offices on weekdays from 8am-4pm. Gates Christmas Tree Farm offers a u-cut experience

For many Santiam Canyon residents, nothing heralds in the holiday season quite like a Christmas tree.

This year, local residents need not travel far to experience this favorite tradition.

Pennick Farm, located just outside of Gates, is busily preparing to open their family-operated u-cut Christmas tree farm.

“The trees look really good this year,” says Bill Pennick, owner of Pennick Farm.

Pennick, a life-long area resident grows a variety of Christmas trees on his 4th generation farm. This will be the farm’s third year

of commercial harvest and the second year of offering u-cut trees to the public.

“We are the closest u-cut farm for Mill City, Gates, and Detroit/Idahna folks,” says Pennick. “We’re also the closest u-cut farm to Central Oregon. Last year we had many people driving from the Bend and Sisters area stop by and cut a tree.”

This year, Pennick Farm has pledged to donate a portion of its sales to the local MCGRA youth program. Pennick Farm will be open daily until dark, beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving.
