Local Heros, Serving Heros Portland last week to bring some holiday cheer into the lives of veterans recuperating from illness and injury. The group of local youth, ages 10-18, meet three times a month at the Mill City Christian Church for an evening of fellowship, singing, knitting, playing games and sharing in a supper made by a group of dedicated volunteers. “Hard to say how many kids show up every week,” said Loretta Benjamin, one of the coordinators, “Last week we had 46.” The kids and some adults, had been making hand knitted hats, lots of hats, with the goal to bring as many as possible to the veterans in time for the holidays. Thanks to

knit hats, plus 16 hand tied polar fleece blankets. “Cora was running a sweatshop at her house. If you walked in the door she’d have you making a hat!,” laughed Benjamin. Nordmo was inspired to give back to veterans after caring for her own grandfather last year in the same hospital. Several of the knitters, pictured here, joined youth pastor Matthew Shepherd on Friday as a reward to present their work to the VA. “They were welcomed warmly with true appreciation,” said Benjamin. Board of Directors would like to thank all the business and the community members who supported our 70th Annual Firemen’s Benefit. We hope that a good time was had by all. The department would also like to thank the volunteer’s spouses, friends, former volunteers and their spouses who also gave their time. They are the ones that keep our kitchen going. Also, a thank you to the Santiam High School International Club for organizing the kid’s games. The funds raised during this event go towards the training of volunteers, new equipment, repair of older equipment, medical supplies and also the annual 4th of July Fireworks. “Once again, we would like to thank the busi-

Santa to visit Mill City tree lighting ceremony

The City of Mill City will be hosting its third annual Christmas Tree Lighting Event on Sunday, December 7 at 5pm at City Hall (444 S 1st Avenue). Doors open at 4:30pm. The City will be partnering with local community groups and businesses to bring this wonderful event to our citizens. The community Chorus will be there to bring you songs of the season and we are hoping to have Santa stop in for a visit as well So mark your calendars and be sure to bring your family to this great annual event! 1
