Why Mill City needs a skate park...

Joanne Hebing of Mill City is a mother and a grandmother an active proponent of developing a skate park in Mill City. Each week, Mrs. Hebing has been submitting reasons why she believes a skate park would be a good thing for any community.

The Mill City Skate Park Committee meets at least each month which are announced on their Facebook page: Mill City Skate Park Project: Skateparks can draw skateboarders away from less appropriate areas. If we don’t have a skatepark, people will continue to

skate wherever there is compelling terrain.

We should put the skatepark where we want there to be activity and away from those places where we don’t.

Young and old people enjoy skateparks.

Skating has been a part of our culture for more than 50 years.

There are skateboarders well into their 50s who still enjoy pushing around a park. The skatepark is a place where the young and old can recreate together as equals. This is important for adult skateboarders but equally important for the younger set.

The Mill City-Gates American Legion Auxiliary Unit 159 are selling high quality, all-weather 3x5 American flags.

Flag proceeds go to the auxiliary and will help us support and advocate for veterans, active military and their families, and also support the initiatives and programs of the American Legion.

The high quality nylon flags have brilliant color, are lightweight, quick drying, and fly with the slightest breeze, as well as are durable and resists stretching. They have

embroidered stars and have sewn stripes with double-stitched seams. The outside edges have 4 rows of lock stitching to resist tearing and have heavy canvas headings with full-sized brass grommets. Flags are made in the U.S.A. and are $20 each and can be purchased at the Gates Post Office (503-897-2966) and the Lyons Public Library (503-859-2366). Flags can also be purchased during the July 4th Mill City Parade; a booth will be centrally located along the parade route.

The ladies raffle basket for this year’s Youth Benefit Golf Tournament is now on display at US Bank in Mill City, said event organizers.

The ladies basket is filled with goodies from the bottom up.

Although the men’s raffle basket is not on display, it’s contents also contain many goodies &

surprises. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5, and can be purchased for both baskets at the bank. The final drawing will be after the golf tournament on Aug. 2, during the meal.

4th of July Coronation: A Family Affair From the organizers: How to have a safe and fun night at Kimmel Park

The following tips are offered by members of the Mill City Volunteer Fire Department to help make your night more fun, and safer, when you visit Kimmel Park for the annual 4th of July fireworks celebration.

They hope these tips will make the display more enjoyable to the public, as well as make the display as safe as possible.

Spectators should never light fireworks off in the park, there are too many people and someone can get hurt. Always obey

all ushers or monitors and respect the barriers set so you don’t get to close, the fireworks cannot be lit until everyone is set in place in the park.

Although it rarely happens it is possible that a firework component might fall to the ground without exploding. The public should be very careful if you find something like this, do not touch it, call the fire department or police and let them handle it, they are trained to take care of these things.

Again, leave the lighting of fireworks to the trained firemen.

Wine tasting, local foods highlight grand opening at Trexler Farm

Tasting room offers wide array of wines from Honeywood Winery Press Release—Trexler Farm is celebrating the Fourth of July by opening its new Wine and Berry Barn featuring tastings and treats by local producers. The barn is the latest addition to the historic destination, which also includes a cafe, bakery, indoor and outdoor event spaces, store and catering services.

Kirk Trexler, who for many years operated a building contracting business in Stayton, built the barn’s rich wood interior and tasting bar. The land was once home to the Old Mehama Fish Hatchery, one of Oregon’s first hatcheries, built in the 1930s.

Equipment used at the hatchery has been incorporated into the farm’s interior design.

“We really value secondary education, and would like to give every child the opportunity if they choose it,” said Santiam Canyon School District School Board Chair Richard Moore in a recent interview.

Local radio KYAC 94.9 FM in now On the Air! Listeners in Mill City, Gates, Mehama and Lyons can now tune it to 94.9 and listen to Santiam Hearts to Arts new community radio station KYAC FM. It’s on 24/7 with a nice mix of classic country, folk, bluegrass, swing and Americana. Currently the shows are recorded. Live programming will start on July 7 beginning at 6 a.m. with Ken Cartwright an his Ken Till Ten show.

Resources stretched thin as Crisis Center responds to increased need during summer

Cherie Girod has seen a lot of changes in the North Santiam Canyon since 1986 when she first started working at the Canyon Crisis and Resource Center (CCRC).

The center was started as a grassroots movement in 1985 by a group of local women who had experienced some sort of abuse in their lives. In the early years they were responding to the immediate needs that transpired after the huge decline in the local timber industry. Now the reach of the center in much more encompassing and complex.

Primarily the center continues to provide counselling and referrals to resources such as the food bank, Gleaners, churches, safehouses and any support services. The Women’s Empowerment program is available for those who need support for an extended period of time to help rebuild self esteem and gain new skills. Individuals can be connected to a personal advocate to help them navigate the available services and even accompany them to court, DHS meetings or just have someone to talk to. The center is considered “a place of healing and safety.”

The CCRC serves a total of 13 communities from the Mill City office from Aumsville to Marion Forks and Sweet Home to Silverton.

“Each summer we are seeing more and more homeless people seeking refuge in the canyon,” said Cherie Girod.”

Marion County Health Department recently did an assessment of the area and found 1200 technically homeless people living in the upper canyon. This includes people already in temporary housing or sleeping in out buildings and such as camper trailers and.tents.

Some people come to the center with absolutely nothing.

“These are people with sincere needs, who have had huge life changes and come from all walks of life. Some are trying to escape inner city issues, some are chronically mentally ill, some are between jobs and just can’t afford rent. One guy had been shot at in Los Angeles, so he packed up his family and headed to Oregon,” said Girod who explains what she sees as a fine line “One day you have a home and

family, and the next day you don’t.”

Girod stresses that is it not a “hand out” they offer, but more of a “hand to hold”, and they encourage their clients to seek help within their own resources. She tells the story with a happy ending of one homeless woman. Kitten season leaves many wanting a furr-ever home

With kitten season in full swing, local rescue groups are being inundated with calls for help. “We get several calls a day,’ said Marsha Grow from the rescue group Meow Village.

Some of those are coming from kind-hearted souls in the Santiam Canyon, who find unwanted kittens in pastures and parks, and want to help the little creatures.

But, “we just can’t take them all,” said Grow. The all volunteer group Meow Village currently has 60 cats in their care, a number that is limited by the availability of foster homes and financial resources.

“We don’t charge (in adoption fees) what the vet services cost us,” said Grow. Many of the kittens that are surrendered to Meow Village are sick and need medical care.

Even the healthy ones get about $150 in vet services before being adopted out for just $60.

Foster homes are another limitation. These places are just that homes where volunteers dedicate a spare bedroom, basement or other room to caring for abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens.

The Santiam Canyon has two volunteer foster homes, both of which are full to capacity. Meow Village is currently seeking more.

“The only solution that I see is that if everyone would religiously spay and neuter,” said Grow.

Santiam Canyon welcomes back an old friend and community champion

Shawn Morford, Program Manager with Rural Development Initiatives (RDI), a Eugene-based non-profit organization focused on small town and rural community vitality, is spending the summer in the North Santiam Canyon and is housed at Mill City City Hall.

She is a facilitator for the Ford Institute Leadership Program, including the leadership program that will be held in Stayton in the fall, and has been working with GROW EDC and the North Santiam Watershed Council on joint funding proposals to explore economic value chains.

RDI has worked with the canyon for many years so it’s a natural to see RDI staff here,

Louis J. Childress

February 9, 1953 - June 26, 2014

and Shawn’s history in the canyon makes Indian Reservation. her a natural fit.

Her love has always been for rural Shawn lived and worked in the canyon during the 1990’s as the director of the Mill City/Gates 4-H Program and was a founding member of the Santiam Canyon Youth and Families Alliance (SCYFA). She moved to Canada in 1995 but returned to Oregon in 2006 and spends winters in Forest Grove.

During the past 20 years she has seen some varied country: she worked and lived in remote Native (First Nations) villages in coastal British Columbia, spent four years living in Victoria, B.C., taught university field study classes in Thailand and Hawai’i, and worked three years on the Warm Springs Scio – Louis, 61, died Thursday, June 26 in Eugene.

He was born in Tulare, CA and lived most of his life in the Canyon area, especially the Jordan/Scio area.

Louis served in the US Army. He worked in logging all of his life, was well known as a good shovel operator, and was last employed

by Sword Logging. Louis enjoyed fishing, gardening, had a wonderful sense of humor and was always smiling.

He married Kara Hendricks on November 20, 2010 in Sublimity.

Elderly Scio Man found drowned in Thomas Creek Press Release Linn County Sheriff-Undersheriff Jim Yon reports, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a missing 91 year old man with dementia on June 30, 2014, at 11:26 pm from a residence in the 45000 block of Thomas Creek road outside of Scio. Ashby “Al” Getz was last seen inside the residence reading a book earlier in the evening.

Linn County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area and began searching for Getz.

They searched the immediate area around the residence and nearby roads.

Linn County Search and Rescue was brought in to assist with the search. The Linn County Dive team responded to search Thomas Creek, which backs up to the property.

Independent Security Solutions, LLC began servicing Santiam Canyon and Salem area markets in May 2014. With the economy returning, businesses are investing in their operations, new businesses are starting and residential customers are exploring many of the internet-based products available on the market.

Small businesses need to protect their operations from both internal and external threats, but can be reluctant to hire a large electrical contractor due to the perceived costs, scheduling headaches and impersonal
