Adorable young ladies in beautiful dresses graced the stage at Santiam Auditorium Saturday afternoon in a spirit of patriotic fun.

A total of 18 girls competed in four different age categories during the 4th of July Opening Ceremonies for the opportunity to represent Mill City in the 4th of July Grand Parade.

The candidates were judged using a point system on Photo Shoot, Patriotic Outfit, Formal Wear and Essay.

Mill City Mayor Tim Kirsch presided over the ceremonies, and asked the gilrs open ended questions for them to ponder.

The judges for the afternoon were Tara Manning, Lynda Harrington and Melody Munger. “This was extremely difficult decision, very close and all the girls did so very good,” said Manning, a professional model and dance instructor.

“This was a fun first year, with a great turn-out of 18 girls in all! I hope next year is even better,” said event coordinator Angie Fencl.

To the Editor Mill City’s Little Free Library (at the intersection of Kingwood and First), is soon approaching it’s 1st anniversary. It’s reception has been astounding.

The frequency of visitors and the variety of materials circulating amazes us. We’ve seen everything from books, to magazines, to music cd’s, calendars, journals, new pencils, pens, stickers, seasonal trinkets, and games donated. Day-to-day, it changes. One day it’ll nearly be empty...and we’ll think, well

this was a total bust of an idea. Then, the next day it’s overflowing....we just never know. One week it might be nearly void of adult books and stuffed full of children’s books, and the next week the opposite. It’s like it breathes!

The wonderful folks who live in this community are generous beyond measure.

We’d like to take this moment to thank each and every donor for contributing to the Little Free Library’s success. And, if you haven’t done so, the next time you’re by, take a peek inside where (quite possibly) untold treasures await to be discovered.

Saturday Faire returns to Gates this summer The Cascade Foothills Saturday Faire is returning to the greenway and gazebo area parallel to Highway 22 in Gates for three events this summer. This popular Arts and Crafts festival creates an potential income generating opportunity for local artists, craftspeople, gardeners, bakers, musicians and more.

Vendor applications are still being accepted. A generous 10’ X 10’ space rents for $30 per event, or $80 for all three if paid in advance. The dates are July 20th, Aug. 17th, during Dog Daze, and Sept.21st. Faire hours are 9:30-4:00.

Safety Tips for Public Fireworks Displays from the Mill City Fire Department The Mill City Volunteer Firemen want to remind the public of safety tips for the July 4th Fireworks Display. The following tips should help make the display more enjoyable to the public, as well as make the display as safe as possible. Spectators should remember NO FIREWORKS are allowed in Kimmel Park. Obey all ushers or monitors and respect the safety barriers that are in place. Resist the urge to get closer to the fireworks, in fact you get a better view from at least 100 yards away.

Although it rarely happens, it is possible that a fireworks component will fall to the ground without exploding. The public should be cautioned not to touch any of these. If this does happen, keep

everyone away from it and call the local fire department or police department and they will dispose of it.

Leave your pets at home if you are going to the fireworks display.

Make sure they are inside the house and leave a radio or television on to help them cope with the noise from the fireworks.

Leave the lighting of fireworks to the pyrotechnicians. Sparklers, fountains and other fireworks are not safe in a large crowd, leave your fireworks home. The fire departments display will provide plenty of excitement , sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

And... don’t forget to donate to the firemen for next years show.

After a one year pause, the Santiam Canyon Annual Scholarship Banquet is on again this year. This will mark the 12th event of this type to help graduating seniors from Santiam High School meet their goals of a college education.

The banquet consists of an amazing meal and an evening filled with games, auctions a raffle and guaranteed laughter. In the years past the attendants were pleasantly surprised at the items up for auction, and this year is sure to be up to that same standard..

The date to mark is Saturday October 12 and the place to be is the Salem Elks Lodge #336, 2336 Turner Road in Salem. Dinner starts at 5:30pm, but the doors open at 4pm so there is plenty of time to plan auction action.

Tickets are on sale now for $35 Banquet organizers are currently seeking donations of items for the auction and raffles. Corporate event sponsors are also more than welcome.

Highway 22 (503) 897-2614 Mill City, OR Historic Rada property available for development The properties flanking Highway 22 at the west end of Mill City has recently been upgraded with trees and sidewalks and now is listed as available to lease. As of late, the property hosts some outdated low income rental units, locally known as the Deerhorn Apartments.

The worn old buildings don’t give justice to the rich history and value that this piece of land possesses.

What is now the gateway to Mill City and the scenic North Santiam Canyon was originally the homestead of Frank and Rosalie Rada who arrived in 1914 from what is now Yugoslavia. Frank was a foreman at Hammond Lumber Company and Rosalie a homemaker.

The apartments were built in the mid-1950s by Frank Rada, who later sold them to his brother Louie Rada. Louie operated them as a motel after Highway 22 was built in 1952, splitting the farm in two. They later were operated by Louie’s daughter Barbara as rental units in the ‘50s and ‘60s before

they were sold to out of the family.

Steve Rada and his three brothers were raised in Pasadena but spent their summers in Mill City.

Steve, along with his brother Ed Rada bought those old apartments about 12 years ago in an effort to reclaim part of the old family farm. Over the years it has housed an assortment of interesting characters over its life, from loggers and berry pickers to various immigrants.

According to their grandson, Steve Rada, Frank and Rosalie lived in a house on the corner of NW 7th and Alder with chickens and pigs and an immense garden and a garage where he stored his first car, a 1929 Chevrolet sedan..

The Radas sold the house in the 1960’s and it was later deliberately burned down by a man who owned it after a spate with his wife.

Steve Rada fondly recalls a store there in the late 1950’s called Kellum’s Grocery.

“Mr. Kellum walked with a cane and made donuts in a waffle iron kind of machine and they were

so greasy they would slip thru your fingers, and all the neighborhood kids made fun of the guy because his donuts were so bad,” said Steve.

The Rada brothers have made the step to offer this land up for lease, listing with Nancy Kelle of Green Mountain Realty. They will build to suit and lease out the building and property, or the business owner can build themselves and lease just the property .

“The advantages to leasing over buying can be very attractive to business owners,” explains Nancy Kelle, noting the decreased up front costs and the freedom from responsibility of maintenance. “Plus, when it’s time to retire you don’t have to worry about what to do with the property,” she adds, “I’m excited about the prospects this particular piece of land has to offer.

Boating with Bill Bill Sanderson of Mill City has been floating the North Santiam since 1964 and guiding it since 1968. His years of first hand knowledge and experience of every eddy and rock formation hold a treasure trove of information.

Even people, such as myself, who have boated the Santiam for years may be surprised at what lurks under the water.

We put in at Packsaddle just east of Gates in a big comfortable oar framed raft. Sanderson immediately began pointing out fishing holes and spawning grounds while gently steering the craft from eddy to eddy.

Dropping into what is known as the Line Hole he mentions the river is 60 feet deep at the opening and there is an old Model-T Ford that is buried under the gravel in the deep pool. You can see it’s steering wheel emerge at times as the water stirs up the river bed, but not today.

Further downstream at what is known as Curtis Rapids, or The Swirlies, he recalls the flood of ‘64 pointing out a large decaying log perched high upon a rock that was deposited there almost half a century ago.

Every side creek has a name, usually in conjunction with a one time landowner, and every property flanking the banks has a story.

And, what may be even better yet...Sanderson knows, or at least he

says he knows, where the fish are. He points out the recent steelhead seen in the Upper Minto Stillwaters and recalls guiding a trip for musicians Seals and Croft. Modify Chapter 17.64 – Administrative Provisions – Modifies the public hearing notice requirements to comply with state law and modifies fee section to authorize city to collect application deposits to cover the city’s actual expenses for legal and engineering costs to review an application.

Changes references from “city administrator” to “zoning official” 3.

Modifies Section 17.16.120 to allow the staff to review building permit applications for duplexes without a site plan review by the Planning Commission.

4.

Modifies various sections to correct numbering, erroneous citation references and other scrivener errors in the code.

After the close of the public hearing the City Council will make a decision to either approve, deny or modify the proposals.

It was a great weekend spent at Marion Forks Restaurant celebrating the birthday of Dotty Newman’s 90th birthday out on the deck. Her birthday was back in December, but the family felt it to be more fitting to celebrate here, as this is where she grew up and raised her family.

There were balloons, lemonade, and cake for everyone, as she was surrounded by family and friends. My staff and I are very appreciative of having been a part of such a glorious occasion as this. Dotty is one of those special people that warms your heart every time you see her. Santiam Canyon School District is offering a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for breaking windows at the auditorium the night of June 27, 2013. We are from Portland, and would love to live here. Hospice care in town would be nice, if it’s not here already.”
