New SCSD Superintendent invites public to meet Dear Editor, The Santiam Canyon is the wonderful place I have called home for more than 25 years. I am honored to come back to the Santiam Canyon School District as the new Superintendent and Elementary Principal starting July 8. I look forward to working with this talented staff again and supporting our schools to offer the best opportunities to all students.

I am calling on your help. Starting in July, I am launching my ‘100 Meetings in 57 Days’ campaign to begin this role in the position as servant leader, leading up to the first day of school on Sept. 3, 2013. My intention is to meet with any stakeholder who has solutions to the complex issues facing our schools and to rebuild relationships. I want to listen.

Feel free to stop by, call or e-mail me at todd.miller@santiam.k12.or.us. I will also be coming around to meet and greet with various groups and organizations, so if you see me, please say “hello.”

I have fond memories as a student and educator within the district and I want to ensure current and future students have the opportunity to share such a positive experience now and into the future.

I would like to take a moment and thank the current residents who have

sacrificed much of their personal time to volunteer to help the district. Their efforts should be applauded and dedication revered. Thank you to Greg Grenbemer, Dan Lemke, Rick Posekany, Keri Sanders and Arnie White. Mr. White wrote a heartfelt Letter to the Editor last week and while he shouldered responsibility for some of the hard times, we need to remember that he and many of the long-time board members are also responsible for our good times. Thank you to each board member for their service! I am sure each of these members will continue to support our community and they will support the transition to a new board.

And to the new board members, thank you for your commitment to the students and future of our schools. I look forward to working with you.

We have much work to do, but it is worth it. The students of the Santiam Canyon School District deserve our best and I see a bright future ahead. Now is the time for positive change and it will require a collaborative community effort to achieve our goals. I am eager to begin this new chapter alongside the dedicated professionals of the Santiam Canyon School District.

The Canyon Gleaners in Mill City have been helping the the people of the Santiam Canyon keep food on the table for over 30 years now while encouraging self reliance.

Once a week members come to fill their boxes full of healthy foods, but according to Peggy Nickich, the firestorm of energy behind the Gleaners, it’s not a charity.

“We offer a hand up, not a hand out,” says Peggy, a 20 year veteran volunteer, who never seems to stop moving from the moment she walks in the doors. Members of the Gleaners, who are all volunteers, are expected to work a certain amount of hours each month to earn their share. “This helps people to take more ownership and pride.

The food in those boxes was earned,” says Peggy.

There are several ways members can give back. Some go out to the fields and pick the fruit and vegetables, some help transport and package the foods, and others help work the Thrift Shop, one of the sources of income that keep the doors open. For years now the gleaners have accepted gently used items for resale to help pay for expenses such as electricity, water and rent.

The Santiam graduating class will be represented by co-Salutatorians Kristin Mouser and McKenzie Reeser, and by Valedictorian, Brittney Thompson. McKenzie Reeser is a very busy young lady.

She just won both Girl of the Year and Girl Athlete of the year at the recent Santiam Awards night, which might give us a glimpse at the depth of her accomplishments. McKenzie plans to go to Chemeketa for 1 year, then transfer to OIT to become a dental hygienist. Brittney Thompson was the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Quinn Scholarship to the University of Oregon (Go-Ducks!) where she plans to major Alice Sorrick in Literature with a Masters in Teaching. Perhaps she’ll be teaching English at Santiam someday?

Death Notice

Mill City loses long term Council-Woman and Dear Friend

Ann Elizabeth Holaday Moritz died from heart failure in the afternoon of May 14, 2013. Mill City Fire Department responded within three minutes of the attack and took her to Stayton Hospital and then on to Salem Intensive Care.

Ann had a strong religious background and was at peace with mortality issues.

Ann was born in Fargo , North Dakota to Donald Holaday and Laura Wrinkle Holaday on July 10, 1939. The family moved to Texas , where Ann attended public schools. Ann’s brother Steve was also born to Don and Laura. Laura moved to Japan with her second husband. Brother Michael was born there in Fukuoka , and they returned to Texas after the tour of duty. In Texasj, Ann met and married Fritz Oscar Moritz, who work for Ethyl Chemical in Houston, Texas and traveled Athens,Greece . Ann and Fritz Moritz had one son, James Frederick Moritz, who survives.

Laura moved to the Little North Fork river near Mehama , Oregon . Her river home was named Stonehaven, and the family loved to visit her there. Ann left Houston to move near her

Mother as well as for the beauty and climate of Oregon . Laura was active with Salem Visitors, Diet Watchers, Chamber of Commerce, and other groups.

Ann immediately became active with community groups, and served the community with extreme commitment. She was Secretary with the Chamber of Commerce for several years, and volunteered for the Community Assistance Center. She originated the “Dog Daze” community garage sale, and made maps with locations of all registered sales. That event continues to be a popular attraction. Ann served on the Mill City Council for 16 years and was the liaison to the Linn County Sheriff. She maintained exceptionally good communication with law enforcement and served as the Police Commissioner.

Ann is survived by her brother Michael Umphrey of Santa Fe , New Mexico , her son James Frederick Moritz, Grandson Johnathan Frederick Moritz of Houston, Texas, and by her companion of 33 years, Bill Sanderson of Mill City , Oregon .

Around a week ago, we had some high water and it moved trees around in a friendly fashion. Between Packsaddle and Stayton, at least, the trees were washed to the sides of the river and there were no obstructions in the main channels last weekend.

Considering the higher water, the Learn the River trip on June 1 was well attended. The lead boats took the conservative channels, and a few adventurous boaters went down some of the side channels. The weather was sunny and dry, and a great day was had by all. The trip was from Fishermen’s Bend to Mehama, and a long lunch was had at North Santiam State Park. The trail clean-up by the fishing clubs made the area lots nicer, and the facilities there are wonderful.

The Packsaddle run was really good a week ago at 2,250 cubic feet per second flow, and most problem rocks were covered. Some waves were big enough to spray whitewater all over, but navigation was comparatively easy.

Now, the river has dropped 6

to 2,030 cfs and it will drop to 1,650 on June 9, 1,530 on June 10, 1,420 on June 11, 1,310 on June 12, and 1,200 on June 13.

Flows should stay at that level for a while unless we get more rain or snowmelt, and that is not expected. As the Packsaddle flow decreases, more rocks are at the surface of the river and much more rowing is necessary.

It is also easier to see the river bottom and all the fish.

The next Learn the River trip is from Packsaddle to Fishermen’s Bend on June 22. The next meeting of the North Santiam River Guides will be on June 26 at Neufeldt’s in Aumsville at 6:00 p.m. Steelheaders meet on Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Keizer Community Center.

I had a little talk with Smokey Bear the o t h e r day. He was excited about how hiking and camping was so popular. He went on and on about how more and more people were having the unforgettable experience of hiking along wilderness trails and listening to mountain air sifting through the trees while camping under the stars.

He theorized that more and more people were camping out because urban life has become so complicated and stressful. People want to get away from the noisy frustrations of city traffic, being overwhelmed with too much news, coping with complicated tax forms, rushing around getting groceries, commuting, standing in line, and frantically trying to keep up with all sorts of chores.

Smokey mentioned that he is trying to make plans for the future. He said “Camping today isn’t what it used to be. People are littering campgrounds with paper plates, plastic utensils, bottle caps, beverage cans, broken glass and all kinds of trash. I wish people disliked campground litter as much as they do the litter along highway 22. I

hate to think of what it will be like in the future.”

Then he told me about his dream about an “Adopt a Campground” program. It would be like the “Adopt a Highway” idea that has helped remove litter and trash across many thousands of miles of roadsides all over America. He dreamed that various groups would adopt a campground during the summer months and clean it up at least once a week. If this were too often, maybe two groups could adopt a campground and alternate every other week.

He realized such a program would involve a lot of planning, but insisted it could be achieved through cooperation between the agencies involved and any organization that wished to sponsor a program or participate in a meaningful way. If it could be worked out for highways all across America, why couldn’t it work for campgrounds in Oregon?

Every time I drive along highway 22 I think of Smokey’s dream. Smokey could be on to something here. When the “Adopt

503.772.1122 info@eNRGkayaking.com a Highway” program was first suggested back in 1984, no one had any idea it would catch on as well as it did. The “Adopt a Campground” idea has the same potential for success. It sounds like it would be a great summer program for Scout groups, civic clubs or teams of volunteers sponsored by those in the business of selling camping and hiking gear for outdoor enthusiasts. I think Smokey’s dream is worth serious consideration. Who wants to go camping in a trash pit? A team of four or five could clean up a string of campgrounds in a few hours and have fun while doing it.

Smokey will have his 69th Birthday on August 14, 2013. A nice present would be for a sponsor to contact the U.S. or Oregon State Forest Service and find out what they need to do in order to establish an “Adopt a Campground” program and finally make Smokey’s Dream come true.

BURN SEASON ENDS JUNE 15TH The Mill City Volunteer Fire Department wants to remind everyone that June 15th is the last day of backyard burning. Don’t wait until the last day to burn, because it may not be a burn day. If you have something to burn get it done now so you won’t have to have it piled up all summer, causing a fire hazard.

If you can’t get it burned up by the deadline, cover your pile and that way when the fall burn season opens in October you will be all ready. Burning out of season is illegal and can cost you at a minimum a $100 dollar fine. The Oregon Department of Forestry will be out in force as soon as the warm weather gets here and will be monitoring all burning. Don’t risk a fine for burning illegally and wait until the fall burn season. For more information on open burning you can call the Mill City Fire Department at 503 897 2390. Get ready for “the Best Small Town 4th of July West of the Mississippi!”

Teams of volunteers are getting prepped to make this 4th of July in Mill City the best one ever Events start happening June 29th, with the coronation and opening ceremonies with the theme of the year, “Let Freedom Ring!”

Then on Thursday, July 4th, the day starts with the ever popular Lions Club Breakfast, followed by the Grand Parade with a brand new route that finishes up at the fairgrounds at Kimmel Park where there will be an arts and crafts show, family attractions and Music on the Wooden Nickel Stage until Dusk.

Then of course some of the best fireworks in the State of Oregon will be displayed to

the appreciative “oohhhhs “ and “ahhhhhs” of the crowd.

It’s not over with the fireworks though. On Friday July 5th is the Mutt Show, Family Games, and an all new event --The Horse Shoe Tournament. All the while the food and fun and music continue, all at Kimmel Park.

Then on Saturday, the 6th get ready for some dirt, sweat and PIE back at the park. The Softball Tournament will go all day, and another new event, a Pie

Baking and Pie Eating contest is sure to please the hungry players.

All interested forming softball teams are encouraged to get their registrations forms turned in at City Hall as soon as possible.

most tickets above their entry fee will be awarded Raffle Princess Title and receive an extra sash and trophy.

Tickets and money must be turned in by June 14th, Flag Day. At the Coronation Celebration the raffle winners will be selected to receive gift cards/gift baskets and much more.

Rep. Sherrie Sprenger to her constituents: A Request For Help On April 8, 1992, Sidney Dean Porter beat John Day Police Officer Frank Ward to death with a chunk of firewood. After serving only 21 years of a life sentence, Porter is to be released from prison on June 7th.

Representative Sprenger worked in Grant County in the 80’s and dealt with Porter. She knows him to be a violent person who committed a brutal, horrific murder.

She would like to ask her constituents to write to the Oregon Parole and Post-Prison Supervision Board and also to the Office of the Governor and ask them to keep Sidney

Hueller Construction of Lyons recognized for excellence

LYONS--For the fourth time in the last five years, Hueller Construction, Inc., of Lyons was recognized by its peers with a 2013 Oregon Remodelers Association award for a residential renovation project.

Owner Kurt Hueller recently accepted the award from the statewide trade association for “Outstanding Remodeling Achievement – Best Residential Kitchen under $40,000” for a kitchen remodel in rural Lyons.

The team started with a modified ranchstyle home built in 1971 that featured a small, outdated galley kitchen done in a baby-blue color scheme.

“We opened up the floor plan and warmed up the color scheme,” Hueller said. “The homeowner really liked the warmth of natural wood, so the cabinets are all made from knotty alder by Deeter’s Cabinets of Lyons.”

Another local craftsman, Kirk Trexler of Stayton, fashioned a maple wooden slab lining an upper countertop.

The residential remodeling specialists of Hueller Construction have served communities from Salem to Detroit since 1995.
