Mark donates his speaking fees to charity.

Mark likes to say that over the years, he learned more than he taught, took more than he gave and was blessed more than he deserves. Donating speaking fees is simply one way for Mark to show his gratitude for blessings received.

In July 2020, Mark Hiltz retired as a Fortune 100 Sales and Service executive to focus on his gratitude work, both writing and speaking on this topic.

In 2016, Mark earned a Masters Degree in Coaching from Middlesex University in London. While studying at Middlesex, Mark researched gratitude in the workplace. More specifically, how practicing gratitude at work impacts employee happiness. It was a fun and rewarding experience to understand how

They live on 42 forested acres in Hocking County Ohio, which the kids lovingly refer to as “Grateful Acres.” Mark and Linda enjoy hiking, cycling and hosting friends and family at their place. Join us when you can!

Is There a Place for AI in Education?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a revolutionary force in education reshaping the way students learn and educators teach. In the digital age, AI powered technologies are playing a pivotal role in personalizing education, enhancing accessibility, and improving educational outcomes.

One of the most significant contributions of AI in education is personalized learning.

AI algorithms can analyze individual students’ strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles allowing educators to tailor instruction to meet each student’s specific needs. This adaptability ensures that no student is left behind and it challenges high achievers creating a more inclusive and effective learning environment.

The event showcases over 100 Chamber-member businesses and the very popular Taste of Stark competition. Each has a booth at which a representative or two is available to discuss the products and services the business has to offer.

As vendors, the participating businesses receive a concentrated audience of attendees who are eager to find out more about products and services in their local area. In addition, vendors have the opportunity to invite guests, such as employees, customers, family members, neighbors, and friends. Vendors can announce their participation in this large event to their email lists, customers, and on social media platforms. Vendors also receive the evervaluable attendee contact list following the event.

The Taste of Stark competition is even more reason to attend the Business Expo. Approximately twelve restaurants, caterers, coffee shops, or food truck businesses provide samples of their food or beverage offerings. Expo attendees have the opportunity to vote for their favorite. The Taste of Stark winner is notified of their winning by the end of the expo and awarded the Gold Fork Award.

HOW DO I PAY MYSELF AS A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER? High on your priority list as a business owner is getting a financial benefit from all your hard work. So, one of the first and most pressing questions you’ll ask yourself is: “How do I pay myself?”

The answer isn’t necessarily obvious because it’s not the same for every business. How you go about it depends on a few factors, most prominently the structure of your business.

Learning about the various methods of selfpayment early on will help you grow your venture with consistency and confidence.

A good starting point is to create two lists: Fixed costs (those that your business will be incurring regularly) and Variable (those that will be incurred only occasionally). Use those lists to create a 12-month budget. Show in each month the amount you expect to be able to invest or spend. Doing so for a full year will provide a history or foundation for creating future budgets. Working from a budget will have you feeling a stronger sense of confidence and calm when you do spend.

METHODS OF PAYING YOURSELF

Salaries, owner’s draws, distributions and dividends are the primary ways that business owners pay themselves. Which you choose depends largely on your business’ structure and will have tax implications.

out as much of the business’ money as you own, an amount called the owner’s equity. You cannot draw any money that your business owes to an investor, lender or employees (liabilities). Owners of S and C Corps cannot take draws.

Paying yourself by owner’s draw lacks the formality of paying yourself a salary; you don’t have to deduct and submit taxes every time you pay yourself. However, it is still a good idea to set aside the money you’ll need for personal income taxes as you go, so you’ll be ready to pay the right amount of estimated taxes throughout the year.

DISTRIBUTIONS & DIVIDENDS

S and C Corps can pay a portion of their profits to shareholders via distributions and dividends. Dividends are commonly made by C Corps and come in the form of cash payments or additional shares.

Distributions always come from S Corps (or mutual funds) and are always paid as cash. Business owners who take a reasonable salary can also get distributions and dividends. Dividends are taxed twice — at both the corporate and individual levels. Distributions are taxed once — as corporate earnings on each shareholder’s individual tax return, not as income.

HOW MUCH TO PAY YOURSELF

The salary you pay yourself must follow the IRS’s “reasonable compensation” requirement, which states that your salary must compare with what someone doing your work within your industry would typically be paid as an employee.

Those taking owner’s draws can pay themselves as much as the business’ net profit; that means you can take all of the business’ income that isn’t a liability or operational expense. The goal is to meet all your business’ obligations before paying yourself. One way of doing this is to set your draw as a percentage of profits so your compensation fluctuates with the success of the business.

SALARY

Giving yourself a regular salary, just as you would an employee, is a way of providing yourself a consistent income stream and predictability for your business’ budget. When you pay yourself a salary, you must withhold taxes for the IRS from each paycheck—best done via accounting software or a professional bookkeeper.

Doing things this way is a legal requirement if your business is structured as an S Corporation, C Corporation or limited liability company (LLC) that is taxed as a corporation. The IRS has rules for setting your salary — called “reasonable compensation” regulations — to prevent you from taking an unreasonably large amount or trying to avoid taxes by paying yourself too little.

The MEWA was developed to provide additional options and to help control the costs of healthcare benefits. Medically underwritten MEWA rates may provide a less expensive option than a smaller community rated plan obtained under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
