Marketing Matters
Marketing Tips for Local Market Vendors:
How Farmers Market & Pop-Up Sellers Can Turn Visibility into Growth

Whether you’re selling homemade jam, handcrafted jewelry, or organic skincare, local markets offer more than just booth space. They’re a powerful way to connect with your community, build your brand, and grow your business. But success in a market isn’t just about what’s on your table. It’s about how you show up, how you engage, and what happens after the sale. If you’re a Chamber member participating in farmers markets, craft fairs, or vendor events, here are five smart marketing moves to make your booth and your business stand out.
1. DESIGN YOUR BOOTH LIKE A BRAND EXPERIENCE
First impressions matter. Your booth should be clean, welcoming, and instantly communicate what you sell and why it matters. But it’s not just about good signage, it’s about consistency. Use the same colors, fonts, and tone across your price tags, packaging, and business cards. A cohesive look makes you more memorable and signals professionalism, even in a casual market setting.
2. CREATE A FOLLOW-UP FUNNEL
If you’re only making sales during market hours, you’re missing opportunities. Every market should also be a lead generator.
Invite visitors to join your email list, follow you on social media, or grab a postcard for your next event. Consider offering a small discount or gift for signing up, but be sure to follow up. A quick thank-you email or market recap keeps your business fresh in their minds long after they leave.
3. TELL THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT
Shoppers at local markets aren’t just buying goods, they’re buying from you. Share your story. Why did you start this business? What makes your process or product different? Whether it’s signage, a photo display, or a quick conversation, weaving your personal story into the experience builds connection and trust.
4. LEVERAGE THE POWER OF THE CHAMBER NETWORK
Your Chamber membership can amplify your visibility beyond the booth. Promote your upcoming market participation in the Chamber Action newsletter or through member email blasts. Need help with marketing materials? Tap into the Chamber directory to find fellow members who specialize in logo design, print services, or photography. Many small business owners within the Chamber offer exactly the creative support you need, and networking
with them supports everyone’s growth.
5. COLLECT FEEDBACK AND TRACK WHAT WORKS
Markets are great testing grounds. Which products draw attention? What signage gets people to stop? Which promotions lead to email signups or sales? Keep track of what’s working and what’s not, so you can continually improve your setup and messaging. Over time, this data-driven approach can turn your hobby into a scalable business.
Connect. Grow. Repeat.
Selling at local markets is more than a weekend hustle; it’s a valuable channel for building your brand and expanding your audience. With the right strategy, each event becomes an opportunity not just to sell, but to connect, grow, and repeat.
Need help turning your booth into a brand? UB Advertising helps local makers and market vendors develop strong visuals, innovative strategies, and follow-up systems that build real momentum. Reach out today and let’s make your next market your best one yet.

Business Plan or Business Model Canvas?
Which is Right for Your
Starting a business means developing a plan for day-to-day business operations.
This operational plan should include information on who the principals are, how you’ll market your products and services (and who your marketing will target), financial projections and more.
Once upon a time, this was all contained in a formal business plan — a lengthy document that broke down your business piece by piece and bit by bit, until everything was planned and documented down to the last paper clip.
But times have changed. Today’s entrepreneurs can choose new tools to help convey their business idea. You now have the option, for example, of sticking with the traditional business plan or using something like a “Business Model Canvas” instead.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BUSINESS PLAN AND A BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS?
A business plan generally includes sections for an Executive Summary, Company Description, Products and Services, Marketing Plan, Operational Plan, Management and Organization, Startup Expenses and Capitalization, Financial Plan and Appendices, which can include documentation to support the other sections of the plan. As you can imagine, a business plan can be quite lengthy, sometimes spanning dozensof pages.
A business model canvas, on the other hand, condenses all that information into a visual chart that fits onto a single page. It covers nine “building blocks” that show how your business plans make money — Key Partners, Key Activities, Key Resources, Value Propositions, Customer Segments, Customer Relationships, Distribution Channels, Cost Structure and Revenue Streams. Interested in learning more about how to prepare a Business Model Canvas? Check out this free SCORE Webinar that walks you through the process step by step.
WHICH FORMAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
To determine which method is best for you, it’s important to remember why you’re going through this exercise in
New Business?

the first place. Both a business plan and a business model canvas aren’t just for outside consumption or for your eyes only—they’re for both. They provide you with internal direction, and they also explain what you do for those outside the business.
However, each model approaches these tasks in different ways. A traditional plan is best if you plan to seek financing from outside investors or apply for a business loan. In fact, it’s nearly guaranteed that a formal business plan will be required to qualify for financing.
Other than that, the “formal” and meticulous nature of a standard business plan will probably appeal to you if you’re highly detail-oriented and methodical, preferring well-ordered lists and details before taking action.
On the flip side, you might prefer the business model canvas approach if outside financing isn’t important to you or if you prefer looking at the “big picture” rather than the tiny details. This approach is also preferred by entrepreneurs who want to take advantage of a short-term opportunity and need the “first to market” advantage or for those considering several different business concepts and want to evaluate them quickly to decide which one to pursue.

This legislation is a top priority for business groups statewide, and the Akron-Canton Advocacy Alliance is working to promote the bill and build a robust coalition of support.

The Uniform Guy company is 15 years old and is the grateful undefeated winner of The Stark County Best of The Best Reader’s Choice Award 6 years in a row and running! I and my fantastic staff work very hard to make a visit to our store or our ‘Store to your Door’ fittings an enjoyable and informative experience.
My career journey was a Jack of all trades, master of none kind of ride! A journey of discovery and variety has been my path. I was looking for additional part time work and was offered a job at a new uniform store in North Canton. That job was only meant to make ends meet but who knew I would develop a passion for uniforms! It wasn’t rocket science but it was an avenue to still serve people in a different capacity. Fitting a student for their first career or helping a nurse find the right pair of shoes for her aching feet from twelve-hour shifts brought me much satisfaction. I found the same sense of helping people through this new adventure. On December 7th 2009, a date which will live in the opposite of infamy, The Uniform Guy opened for business! From a modest location on Cleveland Avenue for $210 a month to our awesome store and processing center on Whipple Avenue in 2018, it has been our one mission to make groupuniforming easy!

True-up process
The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) provides workers’ compensation coverage based on estimated payroll. Therefore, at the end of the policy year, BWC asks employers to report their actual payroll for the prior policy year and pay any shortage (or receive a refund for any overage) in premium. This process is called a true-up. If the true-up is not completed timely, the following may occur:
• Employer will not be eligible for prior year rebates and incentives
• Employer will be removed from current year programs
• Employer will become ineligible for programs the following year and will continue to remain ineligible for all future years until all past true-ups are completed.
How to report payroll and complete the true-up
Although employers may contact BWC at (800) OHIO-BWC (800.644.6292) and complete their true-up report over the phone, BWC anticipates high call volumes and long wait times. They strongly encourage employers to complete their true-up report online through their BWC e-account at www.bwc.ohio.gov. If you do not have an eaccount, simply select the Create E-Account Link to begin. You will need your BWC policy number and/or Federal Tax Identification Number.
Deadlines
Private employers - True-up report must be completed and payment received no later than August 31, 2025
Public employers - True-up report must be completed and payment received no later than February 28, 2026.
Please note: There is no longer a grace period. True-up and payment (if owed) must be POSTED by the deadline date.
