having an attitude of gratitude benefits us all. Since then, Mark has been sharing his research more widely, helping both individuals and organizations benefit from being grateful.

Quick Connect attendees have the opportunity to obtain business leads through enjoyable networking activities at an event that has built a reputation as one of the most energetic lead producing sessions in Stark County. You’ll hear compelling speakers, meet new business contacts and enjoy a delicious meal. As a member, if you bring a door prize valued at $15 or more, you’ll even star in your very own 30 second commercial to promote your business! Please contact Ashley Winter at ashleyw@ cantonchamber.org or (330) 456-7253 if you are interested.

Mark donates his speaking fees to charity. Mark likes to say that over the years, he learned more than he taught, took more than he gave and was blessed more than he deserves. Donating speaking fees is simply one way for Mark to show his gratitude for blessings received.

In July 2020, Mark Hiltz retired as a Fortune 100 Sales and Service executive to focus on his gratitude work, both writing and speaking on this topic. In 2016, Mark earned a Masters Degree in Coaching from Middlesex University in London. While studying at Middlesex, Mark researched gratitude in the workplace. More specifically, how practicing gratitude at work impacts employee happiness. It was a fun and rewarding experience to understand how

Mark and his wife of 38 years, Linda, have five children and two grandchildren. They live on 42 forested acres in Hocking County Ohio, which the kids lovingly refer to as “Grateful Acres.” Mark and Linda enjoy hiking, cycling and hosting friends and family at their place. Join us when you can!

Is There a Place for AI in Education? Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a revolutionary force in education reshaping the way students learn and educators teach. In the digital age, AI powered technologies are playing a pivotal role in personalizing education, enhancing accessibility, and improving educational outcomes. One of the most significant contributions of AI in education is personalized learning. AI algorithms can analyze individual students’ strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles allowing educators to tailor instruction to meet each student’s specific needs. This adaptability ensures that no student is left behind and it challenges high achievers creating a more inclusive and effective learning environment. AI powered educational platforms also offer real time feedback and assessment. Through smart quizzes, essays grading, and data analytics, teachers can quickly identify areas where students are struggling, helping them intervene at the right moment to provide support. This

enables timely and efficient academic interventions, ultimately improving student performance.

attention must be given to data privacy and security to protect students’ personal information.

Accessibility is another domain where AI shines in education. AI assists students with disabilities by providing tools like speechto-text and text-to-speech, enhancing their ability to access and engage with educational content. Moreover, AI driven translation services breakdown language barriers making education accessible to a more diverse global audience.

In conclusion AI has become an invaluable tool in modern education. Its ability to personalize learning, enhance accessibility, and streamline administrative tasks demonstrates its transformative potential. Educators, institutions, and policymakers must work together to harness the power of AI in education, ensuring that it benefits all students while addressing the associated ethical concerns. With continued innovation and responsible implementation, AI is poised to play an even more significant role in shaping the future of education.

Furthermore, AI enhances educational research and development. Machine learning algorithms analyze vast data sets to identify trends, learning patterns, and areas where curricula need improvement. This data-driven approach helps educators in institutions continually refine their teaching methods and educational content. However, it’s essential to consider the ethical implications and potential biases associated with AI in education. Careful

GET MORE FROM YOUR CANTON CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP: VALUE IN THE 2024 BUSINESS EXPO By: Lauren Bolton and Rachel Underwood Save the date! The 2024 Business Expo will take place on Thursday, March 7th, at the Kent State University at Stark Conference Center from 4 pm to 8 pm. The Business Expo is a fantastic opportunity for extended networking and finding out about local businesses, services, non-profits, and the Canton Chamber of Commerce. This event attracts visitors from the community, local dignitaries, the press, and other local business owners.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, as well. If you’re interested, please contact Melissa Coultas at melissac@ cantonchamber.org for more information. The Business Expo committee has already had its first planning meeting and is looking forward to bringing this exciting event once more to Stark County. Stay tuned for information on vendor registration in November.

The event showcases over 100 Chamber-member businesses and the very popular Taste of Stark competition. Each has a booth at which a representative or two is available to discuss the products and services the business has to offer. Jon Mann of Mann Marketing and Chair of the Business Expo committee explains, “We are looking forward to another successful Business Expo! It has always been one of the best events for the Chamber of the year. The booths are a sellout, and the event is well attended by the chamber members and the community.”

MEMBER BENEFITS

As vendors, the participating businesses receive a concentrated audience of attendees who are eager to find out more about products and services in their local area. In addition, vendors have the opportunity to invite guests, such as employees, customers, family members, neighbors, and friends. Vendors can announce their participation in this large event to their email lists, customers, and on social media platforms. Vendors also receive the evervaluable attendee contact list following the event. The Taste of Stark competition is even more reason to attend the Business Expo. Approximately twelve restaurants, caterers, coffee shops, or food truck businesses provide samples of their food or beverage offerings. Expo attendees have the opportunity to vote for their favorite. The Taste of Stark winner is notified of their winning by the end of the expo and awarded the Gold Fork Award. Ashley Winter, Event & Membership Manager at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, exclaims, “In its 21st Annual year, the Business Expo continues to grow and excite. This expo showcases well over 100 Canton Regional Chamber members. The Taste of Stark competition brings together culinary offerings from local restaurants that delight attendees every year. Do not miss out on this great gem of an event!!”

SPONSORSHIP AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Volunteers are always welcome to help prior to and on the day of the event. Please contact Ashley Winter at ashleyw@ cantonchamber.org.

HOW DO I PAY MYSELF AS A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER? High on your priority list as a business owner is getting a financial benefit from all your hard work. So, one of the first and most pressing questions you’ll ask yourself is: “How do I pay myself?” The answer isn’t necessarily obvious because it’s not the same for every business. How you go about it depends on a few factors, most prominently the structure of your business. Learning about the various methods of selfpayment early on will help you grow your venture with consistency and confidence. A good starting point is to create two lists: Fixed costs (those that your business will be incurring regularly) and Variable (those that will be incurred only occasionally). Use those lists to create a 12-month budget. Show in each month the amount you expect to be able to invest or spend. Doing so for a full year will provide a history or foundation for creating future budgets. Working from a budget will have you feeling a stronger sense of confidence and calm when you do spend.

METHODS OF PAYING YOURSELF

Salaries, owner’s draws, distributions and dividends are the primary ways that business owners pay themselves. Which you choose depends largely on your business’ structure and will have tax implications.

out as much of the business’ money as you own, an amount called the owner’s equity. You cannot draw any money that your business owes to an investor, lender or employees (liabilities). Owners of S and C Corps cannot take draws. Paying yourself by owner’s draw lacks the formality of paying yourself a salary; you don’t have to deduct and submit taxes every time you pay yourself. However, it is still a good idea to set aside the money you’ll need for personal income taxes as you go, so you’ll be ready to pay the right amount of estimated taxes throughout the year.

DISTRIBUTIONS & DIVIDENDS

S and C Corps can pay a portion of their profits to shareholders via distributions and dividends. Dividends are commonly made by C Corps and come in the form of cash payments or additional shares. Distributions always come from S Corps (or mutual funds) and are always paid as cash. Business owners who take a reasonable salary can also get distributions and dividends. Dividends are taxed twice — at both the corporate and individual levels. Distributions are taxed once — as corporate earnings on each shareholder’s individual tax return, not as income.

HOW MUCH TO PAY YOURSELF

The salary you pay yourself must follow the IRS’s “reasonable compensation” requirement, which states that your salary must compare with what someone doing your work within your industry would typically be paid as an employee. Those taking owner’s draws can pay themselves as much as the business’ net profit; that means you can take all of the business’ income that isn’t a liability or operational expense. The goal is to meet all your business’ obligations before paying yourself. One way of doing this is to set your draw as a percentage of profits so your compensation fluctuates with the success of the business. Have more questions? Reach out to SCORE for no-cost, expert mentoring and resources to guide you through your small business journey. Visit score.org/canton or phone 330-451-6509 to learn more.

SALARY

Giving yourself a regular salary, just as you would an employee, is a way of providing yourself a consistent income stream and predictability for your business’ budget. When you pay yourself a salary, you must withhold taxes for the IRS from each paycheck—best done via accounting software or a professional bookkeeper. Doing things this way is a legal requirement if your business is structured as an S Corporation, C Corporation or limited liability company (LLC) that is taxed as a corporation. The IRS has rules for setting your salary — called “reasonable compensation” regulations — to prevent you from taking an unreasonably large amount or trying to avoid taxes by paying yourself too little.

National expertise. Local talent. Certified public accountants (CPAs) and business advisors personally invested in the success of your business.

OWNER’S DRAW

An owner’s draw is the only option available to sole proprietors and LLCs, allowing you to take compensation from your business’ profits on an as-needed basis. You can draw

Two Total Distribution, Inc. (TDI) team members, Sherrie Tapia in Jacksonville, FL, and Melissa Granados Garcia in Fremont, OH have been honored with Supply & Demand Chain Executive Magazine’s Women in Supply Chain Award. This award honors female supply chain leaders and executives whose accomplishments, mentorship and examples set a foundation for women in all levels of a company’s supply chain network.

Carpe Diem Coffee Shop, a beloved downtown Canton institution known for its friendly service, delicious refreshments, and a warm, inviting atmosphere, will celebrate its 20th birthday on Nov. 3, 2023.

Over the past year, these women helped TDI drive sustainability efforts forward, established great partnerships, advocated for their teams’ and employees’ safety, and sought out creative ways to solve problems. These women continued to pave the way for other female leaders to become part of an essential industry that matters.

From November 1-4, Carpe Diem will give back to the community that has supported it for the past 20 years by donating 20% of profits daily to local nonprofit organizations.

Additionally, Total Distribution, Inc. (TDI) has been honored with 2023 Cascade Capital Corporation’s Business Growth Award. The Business Growth Awards Program, presented by Cascade Capital Corporation, recognized TDI and the other honorees that have achieved superior growth in sales and/or employment over the past five years in early October. To earn this award, TDI’s sales increased by 100% or at least $5 million over the past five years, and its full-time employee base increased by 50% or 25 actual employees over the past five years as well.

Owners Cathy and Patrick Wyatt initially fell in love with the space that would become Carpe Diem when close friends Jenny and Steve Coon showed the couple the renovations underway in the building.

In addition, the Wyatts will host a celebratory open house on Friday, November 3, during Canton First Friday, and Saturday, November 4. “We have spent the past 20 years pouring love and appreciation into this shop and making hundreds of friends along the way. We consider those friendships to be a better reward than profits. We feel privileged that people share their lives with us and let us serve them day after day,” Cathy said. The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and AultCare have partnered together to offer a healthcare plan for the small business community through a Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA). The MEWA was developed to provide additional options and to help control the costs of healthcare benefits. Medically underwritten MEWA rates may provide a less expensive option than a smaller community rated plan obtained under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This plan is available for small group employers with less than 50 employees.
