Breeder Profile - Black Meadows Angus -Larry, Bill & Alan Walker

Facts taken from the Manitoba Angus History book. -The first group of females were a group of heifer calves from the Silver Springs herd of Arrow River, MB -Black Meadows was registered at the Canadian Livestock Records as the herd name in 1959 - People of influence in the development of Black Meadows Angus were: -Mr. Jack Wythe Senior, Debenham Farms, Miniota, MB -Larry Glasman, C.E. Glasman & Sons, Russell, MB - Mr. C.H. Norman Hodson, Boni-Agri Angus, Lenore, MB -Black Meadows exhibited stock at summer fairs, Toronto Royal, Ag Ex., Agribition and the World Angus Forum in Edmonton. In the late 1960s, Larry was elected to the Manitoba Angus board of directors. He served the Association for twenty some years as a director, committee member and several years as President. He was also elected director of the Canadian Angus Association, serving two terms and one year as CAA President. These were trying times for the Angus breed. The arrival of several exotic breeds where coming to Canada garnering interest of some of their traditional customers. So as directors they had to find new ways to promote their breed and find new markets. At this time Larry acted as liason with the MB. Dept of AG. Marketing branch. A display was taken of bulls and heifers at Ag Ex bulls and then to the Denver Livestock Show where they made contact with ranchers from northern Mexico. They took part in a Western Canada display in Mexico City. All this led to some sales of Manitoba Angus to Mexico through the marketing branch. Three Manitoba breeders formed a list of some of the duties and accomplishments of the exporting company. (LANDEL INTERNATIONAL) Dolf Henuset, Lang Musgrave, and Larry Walker were the original founders of the company and later added Grant Wilson. They accomplished the export of a large number of Manitoba breeding stock including Angus. There were many other projects, the Junior Angus Heifer class at the Manitoba Winter Fair, the Junior Judge Program at Brandon Ag. Ex, pen classes for bulls and heifers at Ag Ex, herd tours, the publishing of the Angus news letter which continues today. These were some of the duties and accomplishments of the board of directors that Larry was part of. He tells us his rewards are many but the most important is THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE BREED TO THE STRENGTH IT IS TODAY! Bill was also an active member, serving as a board member on NW Bull Test Station at Roblin, Breed Rep at Douglas Bull Test Station and on the MAA board as a director. He was on the board when the Keystone Klassic Sale was established. Black Meadows Angus has been recognized for many achievements over the years at both test Stations and in the Show ring. There are too many to list here. They have marketed their cattle through private, test station and consignment sales to commercial and purebred herds in Canada, the US, Mexico, Australia, Japan and Czechoslovakia. Black Meadows Angus will write their final chapter when they hold their complete herd dispersal, at the Heartland Livestock Auction Mart in Virden, Manitoba on December 16th, 2023

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Good day all, Wow, what a time to be in the cattle industry. Prices just continue to stay incredibly strong and predictions say they will continue to stay this way for the season and potentially past that. Although the drought has played a factor in many areas across Western Canada, it’s fantastic to see the current high cattle prices. Hopefully the strong market will allow these producers plagued by lack of moisture to be able to purchase the feed supplies they need to get through the upcoming winter. After years of perseverance and anticipation for the market to become hot again, it’s encouraging to see all your hard work being rewarded. In the MB Angus world, I can say we had a great summer. The summer Gold Show in Harding had a strong showing. Although I wasn’t able to attend, I was told by multiple sources they were pleased with the event. At the end of July, Camo Cattle Co. and Madsen Angus hosted a field day tour. The event was very well received with an excellent attendance. The day included, touring Angus cattle that were represented from several herds across MB, a forage/corn tour, great food and lots of socializing. I would like to personally thank everyone who helped make the day a success. MB Angus would like to continue to make these summer tour days a standard event in the future. As we now roll into the fall there is lots to look forward to. The Manitoba Ag Ex in Brandon at the end of Oct is hosting the National Angus Show for 2023. With large entry numbers, there will be separate black and red shows this year and we are anxiously looking forward to this year’s event. After the Supreme show Friday night, Ag Ex is also hosting a Party in the Dirt which will be a fun way to end off the event. This year, the Keystone Klassic Sale will be hosted on December 5 in conjunction with the Keystone Konnection sale. The event will again be run by Bohrson Marketing Services. Based off conversations over the last couple months we should have an excellent line up of replacement females on offer in this year’s sale. I heavily anticipate this year’s fall events and look forward to getting to visit with you all! Cheers, Devin Boitson MB Angus President

Please provide a brief history on the individual with the nomination. DEADLINE for NOMINATIONS is Nov. 24th, 2023

Report from the Manitoba Director for the Canadian Angus Association As I write this, we are in the middle of a very exciting calf run which certainly has producers excited to say the least. The Canadian AGM was held in Saskatoon in early June. Some great tours were held with lots of positive feedback. The AGM was held on Saturday with our CEO presenting a strong financial report. He also announced that the board has decided to explore the options available for ANGUS CENTRAL including the possibility of selling the building. As of right now that is what’s happening, we are just exploring the options. Also at the AGM, Brian Good was announced as the first inductee to the Canadian Angus Hall of Fame. We unfortunately lost Brian in July of 2022. He was a long-time field man for the Association and lifelong Angus Enthusiast, a most deserving recipient of this honor. On the Saskatchewan tour the initial verified Angus BBQ competition was held and was a tremendous success. To wrap things up on a national level on November 22, 2023, at CWA the initial BRIAN GOOD BATTLE OF THE BREED JACKPOT BULL SHOW will be held with 50% of the entry fees going towards the BRIAN GOOD Scholarship Fund. Check the website for more details, cdnangus.ca Hope to see a big crowd for the National Angus Gold Show in Brandon at Ag Ex October 26 th at 9am. See you down the road. Anderson’s Celebrate 90 Years Breeding Angus Cattle Written by Austen Anderson

This year we are celebrating breeding Angus Cattle for 90 years. We are proud to be part of only a handful of families still active in the breed this long. Alexander Anderson came to Canada in the late 1800’s and tried farming in Carberry for several years. Frustrated with the sandy soil, Alex rode North in 1898 to the newly opened Swan Valley and planted his 1st wheat crop in the valley in a creek bed with seeds carried in his shirt pocket. He returned in the fall to find it had matured without being killed by frost. They made the move North the following year. Breeding livestock was important right from the beginning. They started with Shorthorn and we have a medal from 1902 from the 1st Swan River Valley Agricultural Societies for best Pen of Shorthorn Bulls. His son Alexander Bruce Anderson, known as Bruce started breeding purebred Angus Cattle in 1933 with the purchase of the 1st bull, Mongnonettes Stylish, followed by two more bulls from Cliff Argue and Elbridge Good. One of the 1st founding Females purchased from Cliff Argue was Pearl Bard of Parkdale who calved at 14 months of age. She went on to found the Lucy Cow Family. Another Prolific female was Dorthy of Mountain View who founded Miss Morrison Family. In the spring of 1950 a devastating flood covered most of Southern Manitoba, with 2 feet of water soaking the Red River Valley. Many of the livestock in the area died during this flood by drowning or exposure. The United Kingdom flew into Winnipeg to help with the disaster as well as high quality breeding stock to be distributed by public auction with the proceeds going to the relief fund for the victims. Interestingly there were 68 animals flown in to sell including Shorthorns, Herefords, Angus, Red Polls, Jerseys, Ayrshires, Swine and Suffolk Sheep. In this Sale A.B Anderson purchased Primula of Balfron for $750 who turned out to be very prolific. In 1972 Doug and his brother Rob dispersed the cattle they owned together which included 43 descendants of Primula.

Founding Tibbie - Ridgelane Tibbie 34N

Doug and Rob really enjoyed showing bulls and steers at numerous summer exhibitions and the Royal Winter Fair. They were especially proud to have Grand Champion Steer in Dauphin in 1959. They also had Champion Pen of 5 steers in Brandon in 1963 and 67. In the Brandon Bull Sales they had Grand Champion in 1959, 1960 and 1966 and reserve in 62, 65 and 66. Doug was the president of the Canadian Angus Association in 1964 and loved travelling with Bernice to Angus events and visiting with the people there.

Another important Purchase was Ridge Lane Tibbie 34N bred by the Jackson Family. She would go on to be a foundation donor at Mountain View Farms and Remington Cattle Co. Her daughter, Tibbie 15T, born in 1985 was Grand Champion Heifer Calf at Agribition and Reserve Grand Champion female in 1986. She would register 127 progeny as a donor for Mountain View Farms and Hamilton Farms. She was also a wild type Red Carrier and most of our red herd goes back to her. Embryo transfer has been used extensively since the 1970’s. The 1st time we used it was on Gelbviehs and we didn’t know how successful it would be so we put in two eggs each in 4 recips and ended up with four sets of twins. Now we put in between 20 and 40 embryos a year out of our most productive and prolific females as well as some purchased eggs. After the 1991 Dispersal Sale Bruce and Ione went out on their own and focused on Red Angus with Red MVF Tibbie 103Y and 16 females from Allan Knight of Calgary Alberta. Working the best Black Angus genetics into the Red Angus breed has been a staple of the breeding program right from the start. Anderson Cattle Co. consigns females to Red Round Up, Keystone Klassic and Wheeler Stock Farm and Friends Celebration Sale. We exhibit cattle at Ag Ex, Ag Days, CWA and Yorkton Harvest Showdown. In 2009 we held our 1st bull sale in Valley Livestock Sales facility in Minitonas, by 2014 we had moved it to the farm and have been hosting it there ever since. We now sell 70 bulls a year from Ontario to Alberta and into the USA. We are excited about our future and raising the 6th Generation of Angus Breeders in the Industry Left to Right: Austen, Katie, Bruce, Ione, Breanna & Wade that we love.

Message from your CAA President Hello friends in Manitoba, it was indeed a pleasure to be asked by Lois McRae to write something to you folks after being elevated to the position of President of the Canadian Angus Association in June. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind as I’ve travelled from one coast to the other, visiting lots of different programs and attending a lot of Angus functions. Your Canadian Angus Association has been working diligently at looking at new programs that would be beneficial to all purebred cattle producers, and commercial cattlemen alike. We’ve been trying to do all of these things at an afford able price. The Angus office in Calgary is a well-oiled, extremely efficient operation with very few glitches and we’re proud of the people that are working there. I think they’re doing an excellent job. This year we’ve seen record-setting sales for livestock and the momentum just continues to build. The Angus business is in pandemonium today and it’s an exciting industry to be in. I’m extremely honoured to represent you and I do in fact take the position very seriously. If there’s anything that I can do, please feel free to reach out at any time. Hopefully this fall and next spring we will have an opportunity to speak to you in person. Tom DeWal Canadian Angus President Commercial Angus Producer of the Year for 2022 — SOLAR RANCH William grew up on a dairy/beef/grain operation west of Fork River, Mb. As a young kid he could always be found in the barn, field, shop, feedlot, pasture, or bull sales with his family. William graduated in 2016 with a future in farming in mind. He purchased his first 50 heifers in 2018 (Angus of course). Growing up with the breed he learnt that they are a docile breed, hardy, cows calve easily and have excellent maternity instincts. Calves are lively and in feedlots meat quality proves superior time and time again. He has added a few purebreds since and calves all on spring pasture. Alongside the love of his life Haley, mom and dad, and his sisters they strive to improve the land they farm by implementing rotational grazing, reduced tillage, and planting cover crops. Keeping Angus influence and genetics in his herd - he purchases Angus bulls and plans on continuing on this path for years to come. He has since grown their herd to a few hundred. William and Haley implemented an AI program into their breeding program this year. President Devin Boitson presents the sign to William & Haley De Vos

Report from Director of Business Development for MB/SK As we are starting into the fall calf run we are experiencing prices for feeder calves unlike anything we have seen before. This is long overdue and provides an opportunity for purebred producers to take a harder look at their bull pens and replacement females and maybe cash them in now. There are still a lot of cows going to town in some areas due to lack of pasture and feed which may add pressure to the spring bull sales, so why put extra time and money into some "borderline" cattle when they are worth good money now? Maybe you could use some of that money to add some new genetics to your operation at some of the many sales happening this fall? Just a thought.... A few of the bigger events I went to this summer were the Summer Herd Tour hosted by CAMO Cattle Co and Madsen Angus in Manitoba. It was nice to see this happen again and there was a very good turnout for this one-day event. Showdown was held in Swift Current in July and was the second-biggest one to date. There were Juniors from across Canada in attendance, and once again it was truly impressive to see the abilities of the young people in all the various competitions and the quality of the cattle exhibited. Congratulations to Canadian Junior Angus under the guidance of Belinda Wagner for once again putting on a fantastic event. The Saskatchewan Angus Association held their tour in August in East Central Saskatchewan. The two-day event included stops at eight farms, displays by our hosts and other breeders in the area, a fantastic Ukrainian supper, entertainment by Quick Dick McDick and the first Verified Angus Barbecue competition. This tour was once again very well attended, and if you haven't been on one of these yet you should make plans to do so. I'll be travelling around this fall getting to as many Angus Feeder Calf Sales as I can. I'll also be at the Gold Shows in Brandon (National Show), Lloydminster Stockade Roundup and Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, as well as some bull and female sales around the country. Here's to hoping the commercial market stays strong and the purebred bull and female sales follow suit. See ya down the road, Bob Toner

16th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup 2023

The cattle industry is in good hands after watching the participants at Roundup go through their educational and cattle show weekend. On August 4, 5 and 6th seventy one enthusiastic Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario Junior Cattle Producers attended the 16th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa, Manitoba. Exciting times in Agriculture brought out 71 Juniors with 77 head of cattle. this year 31 members attended Roundup for the first time. This is just not any cattle show it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue on in the livestock industry.

16 years ago, this All-Breed Committee along with new directors has developed over the years with over 286 Juniors participating in the weekend. This show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors, parents, Juniors, Judges, Volunteers and Committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success. CANADIAN JUNIOR ANGUS DIRECTOR LAINIE MUIR Hello, and happy fall! I hope everyone had a blessed growing season with productive herds and a successful harvest. It has been another exciting summer and fall for our CJA juniors! In June we had Manitoba representation in the 2023 Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador competition. MESSAGE from Manitoba Junior Angus President - EMMA HARMS

Greetings! I hope everyone had a great summer, although it always seems to fly by too fast. The Juniors might have been out of school for the summer, but they sure kept busy exhibiting Angus genetics across the province. The Manitoba Junior Angus Summer Gold Show was once again held July 21, in Harding. Despite the heat, a few Juniors took to the show ring with their Angus females. In the Showmanship division, Kate Hinsburg of Rapid City, MB was our Grand Champion, and Alice Rooke from Alexander, MB was the Reserve Champion. Kendra Hinsburg came home with Grand Champion Female KCH Beauty 214K and Reserve Grand Champion Female KCH Rose 312. Congratulations on a successful day ladies! The Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup was held August 4-6 in Neepawa, and there was a great turnout of juniors participating. Roundup is always a great weekend for juniors to learn new skills and make connections. Congratulations to Carson Baker on his Grand Champion Angus Female Greenbush Princess 5J with calf Greenbush Princess 3L at side. Kendra Hinsburg snagged Reserve Champion Angus Female with KCH Beauty 214K. Great job to all the juniors exhibiting Angus cattle this summer! I hope all of you can make it to the Manitoba Angus Junior Show at Ag Ex, on October 27 at the Keystone Center in Brandon. I also want to remind you that the application deadline for Show Female of the Year is November 10, 2023. The recipient will be notified and awarded at the Keystone Klassic sale in December. Applications and more information are available on the Manitoba Angus website. I hope everyone has a great fall and I’ll see you down the road. The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency to Deliver Chain of Custody Verification for Sustainable Beef Program The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) is delighted to announce that it has been chosen as the sole verifier of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef's (CRSB) Chain of Custody tracking for the Certified Sustainable Beef Framework across Canada, with the exception of Quebec. The decision follows a two-year review of the program by CRSB, with the intention of improving a consistent implementation of Chain of Custody requirements and providing greater transparency of live cattle movement across all CRSB certified supply chains. CRSB Certified operations with CLTS accounts will now be able to see the “CRSB Certified” status of their cattle’s identification indicators as those indicators/cattle moves through the supply chain. “The CCIA is thrilled to have been chosen by the CRSB to support this very important program,” said Anne Brunet-Burgess, General Manager of the CCIA. “The CCIA has an enviable track record in livestock data management, including chain of custody tracking, experience that we feel will strongly benefit this initiative.” The agreement with the CRSB will not affect the CCIA’s existing Chain of Custody program for sustainable beef with Cargill as the two programs will run independently in parallel to each other. Elsewhere, as 2024 approaches, the CCIA is getting ready to engage in a new national education campaign focused on promoting best practice amongst livestock producers and industry stakeholders, elevating trust in the traceability program, with the goal of improving tag retention. The “Retention Matters” campaign will run January through December 2024, inclusive, and will feature content based on five key tenets of retention – tag design, tag quality, environment, tag application, and myths and misconceptions. This campaign, unanimously supported by the CCIA’s Board of industry members, will be one of the largest conducted by the Agency, with all the supporting content curated in one dedicated website – www.retentionmatters.ca. Across the year, content will be delivered through a mix of visual and interactive educational tools, national print and social media campaigns, and demonstrations at trade events. Additional support and awareness will be provided through the CCIA’s Client Support Team, and every single pack of tags distributed by the CCIA, both to dealers and direct to producers, will include additional information on retention. The CCIA is confident that the “Retention Matters” campaign will strike a positive chord and is looking forward to positive engagement from industry on this timely issue.

Manitoba says Goodbye to members of the Angus Fraternity! We would like to express our sympathy to Shirley and the rest of the family of Don Menzies. Don passed away July 17, 2023 at the age of 85 Don raised Black Angus cattle for many, many years. Their herd name was Shondril Angus a combination of Don & Shirley. In the spring of 1971 they purchased 5 heifers and a bull from Arnold Lawson, and that was the beginning. From there, they attended many sales in Alberts, Saskatchewan and Manitoba adding to their herd. In 1984, Don & his son Danny attended the Denver Stock Show and purchased Ellanin Sky Diver. This bull was an important asset to Don’s herd and he showed him at the 5th World Angus Forum in Edmonton in 1985. A highlight of that trip was having the Queen Mother visit in the barn with the breeders. Don attended every Regina Agribition Show from it’s beginning until his retirement. He sold cattle in many noteworthy sales, such as, ”The Summer Sensational” , “The Masterpiece” and the Toner Sale, in Saskatchewan as well as being a strong supporter of the “Keystone Klassic Sale” in Manitoba. Don & Shirley and their family made many friends throughout Canada and overseas through the Angus cattle. Don will be fondly remembered as a very friendly man, who would always have time to stop and chat and for his strong belief and promotion of Angus Cattle in Manitoba!

The Angus family was saddened to hear of the passing of Corey Jones, Melita, MB and sends condolences to his family. Corey passed away suddenly at his residence on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at the age of 48. He was a well known Angus breeder in Manitoba and supporter of Ag. Ex. And the Keystone Klassic Sale, presenting some very top quality cattle. Corey was also a well known veterinarian who practiced in his community where he grew up. He wrote a very informative article for the Angus Outlook several years ago.

Surrounded by family, Gail Hamilton (nee Rogers), beloved wife of Albert Hamilton of Glenboro, MB, passed away peacefully at the Glenboro Health Centre on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the age of 68 years. Gail & Albert were an active part of Hamco Cattle Co. for many years until their retirement. Our sincere sympathy goes out to the Hamilton family.

Condolences to the Kirkpatrick family, “Kembar Angus” in the passing of their father Neil on September 12, 2023 at the age of 88. Neil showed Shorthorn cattle in his youth with his father but he was very supportive and proud of his family and their accomplishments with their Angus herd. He loved to attend the Keystone Klassic Sale and Ag Ex visiting with many of the Angus breeders.
