On behalf of everyone at MRL, welcome to the “Holding Nothin Back” bred heifer dispersal. This is a special event for 2023 as for the first time in our ranches history the “untouchables” will be offered for sale by public auction. Over 50 years of stacking cow families, ruthless culling protocol and never ending search for the top herdbulls in the land, has resulted in our elite cowherd of over 800 cows. Yes this is a total dispersal of the entire “K” bred heifer group but is a little different to most total dispersals as these heifers were bred as if they were staying right here at MRL. Specific AI dates in a short 60 day breeding period,. Being they are the 2 year olds, you are getting the freshest, most current genetics as well and not everything born that year but the group that was selected to be bred for replacements right here at MRL. This group is consistent from front to back. All two year olds with their entire production years ahead. Boy, there’s been a few times in the course of the last couple of months we have doubted our decision, but the reality is, we truly need to tweek our workload back a smidge somehow. To quote Dad sitting at the gate a month or so ago as the heifers went back up to the pasture after clipping, “It’s bloody criminal selling some of these females.” And to quote David and Lee, “Well then, you are going to have to pick up the pace a little.” (Dad will be 79 this spring and still works 12+ hour days) to put perspective on the quotes! The reality is several of these females are downright irreplaceable and will be missed in our breeding program but we will still calve almost 800 cows in 2024. Somewhere in everyone’s welcome we need a paragraph to elate to weather. Once again in 2023, drought seemed to loom over a large part of the prairies including here at Carievale. It was a long stretch with no rain from May until September. Here’s hoping most areas scratches enough feed together. In our case we chopped all our barley and late rains salvaged a corn crop that somehow seemed to hang in there. Late rains have made for greener pastures in October than they were all summer. But winter set in October 20th with over a foot of snow. Nice weather mid November has opened things back up and the cowherd remains grazing as we speak. It has made the feedlot and pens the worst I’ve ever seen this time of year and made picturing and videoing somewhat of a challenge but the moisture will look good next spring. The offering will start with a power packed group of red females stacked with maternal merit and shear performance pedigrees that will be true herdbull matrons. AI service to exclusive sires proven to calve yet perform out of our most elite genetics. MRL Rip Zone owned by Ag Land and MRL Centrium owned by Westway Farms. Both outcross pedigreed bulls whose sons this spring will turn some heads and calved great last year in all 3 programs. Erixon Glide is the new calving ease bull we purchased last spring and are sure exited to see his calves. The Black Simmental group will garner some attention. Powerful donor prospects and front pasture females that will elevate your program. Service on these to the highly proven State of War and exclusive MRL Bender bulls whose semen is very hard to come by. Also limited, totally exclusive service to MRL Strategy and our pick of the bulls at the R + dispersal, R + Sockeye. The Angus division is powerful and it is truly painful parting with many of these females. Exciting outcross genetics to many other top programs in the Red Angus world and exclusive service to MRLA Final Tour, U2 Headliner 61G and U2 President 60H. Several donor type prospects in each division as well as front pasture females that will more than pay for themselves with the calves they are carrying. Again, we will surely miss some of the females but are excited to see how they will excel for their new owners as we will keep a watchful eye for herdbulls down the road to acquire out of those programs. Picturing and videoing have been a bit of a struggle as went from hoping to picture on grass the 20th of October to over a foot of snow and full fledge winter, gathering cows and fighting the weather. Picture days were short and challenging as we encourage you to come have a look in person. The heifers are still out in the field as we speak but will be moved to the yard upon freeze up for viewing. The cattle business is “roaring” historical record setting prices for calves, yearlings and cull cows and bulls. All signs point to long term sustainability of this upside with low numbers North American wide. It truly is an opportune time to invest in young quality females to add to your operations. As you study over 100 purebred Simmental, Angus and Red Angus breds and 55 fancy commercial SimAngus breds you will quickly see the MRL type and kind. The black bred heifers have as many donor prospects sprinkled throughout it as we have seen before. A poor picture here of one of the females in this entire offering that pains me to let go. She is absolutely the kind that will be a herdbull producer and the kind that has made our program popular with the cowboys at bull sale time. This was another one of the heifers I wasn’t happy with the picture of but considering the conditions we’re lucky we got any pictures. She really is an impressive super stout made female that will catch your eye in the pen in a hurry. The Can Am bull has bred very well and his sire, the MRL Statement bull, is one of the good ones we have made and really stamps them siring our high selling $50,000 bull again last spring. The MRLA Respect bull has really bred well. He really stamps them with a ton of consistency. The bulls have been popular in the bull sale the past 2 spring topping our Angus division to some really top end breeding programs both sides of the 49th. The females are to die for and this one may be as good as we have made one. On the bottom side is a cow family that has been one of our most productive if you look back over the past almost 20 years this cow family backed up our feature 2 or 3 bulls year in and year out. Well I don’t know where to start with this one other than I would like to hide her in the back pen of the barn sale day. We really think she is a unique breeding piece. We were excited about her sire the MRLA 57H bull when he sold in the 2021 bull sale to Speargrass Cattle Co, AB. An own son of Natural Law out of the 641Y cow who was the dam to MRLA Reload that sold to Leeuwenburgh and was of course the sire of the $90,000 MRLA Red Resource bull. Now get this, this sweetheart’s dam is a maternal sister to Red Resource himself out of the 4422B donor. The young 9489G is also the dam to the Final Tour bull we have used heavily in our program. Bred early to the U2 President 60H sire, boy if this one has a red bull calf the sky is the limit. MRL retaining 1/3 embryo interest. It absolutely takes years to get one bred with this much potential.
