Saskatchewan Angus Association ~ 2023 Commercial Producer of the Year ~ ~ Jerry and Evelyn Chanig, Chanig Ranch, Mankota, Saskatchewan ~ ~ Chanig Ranch is located on the north slope of the Hudson Bay divide with its own special ecosystem. Jerry and Evelyn Chanig describe their location, 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Mankota, as “perfect cattle country”. The ranch covers 6,400 acres of native grass, tame hay and, since 1999, certified organic crop land. The Chanigs are fortunate to have several springs that provide clean fresh water for the cattle year-round. On their ideal land, they run 300 Angus cows and some yearlings for breeding or grassers. Jerry and Evelyn got their start in 1974 and purchased their first Angus bulls in the early 1980s. Jerry is a firm believer in buying two-year-old Black Angus bulls although they do buy the odd special yearling. When buying bulls, they look for eye appeal, the Angus head, stretch and good travel. Bulls are selected with the female in mind. As Jerry says, “good bulls are your cow herd”. Bulls are turned out with cows and heifers at the end of June. When calving starts, 80 percent of calves are born in the first cycle. Calving is mostly on native range pasture with natural shelter from coulees and hill sides. The Chanigs check their calves on saddle horse or 4-wheel bike and hope that they don’t need to use the snowplow very often. Weather is always their greatest challenge and concern. When animals need to be treated or handled, it is done on the prairie to minimize stress on people and animals. Branding takes place in mid-June with the help of neighbours and friends. In their

President’s Report . . . had the pleasure of judging the conformation show. The quality of cattle was second to none, and the quality of juniors I saw walk through the ring was outstanding. The young men and women I had the pleasure to work with for the day were hard working, driven, respectful, competitive and polite individuals who never quit, even in the scorching heat. The parents of all these young members should be very proud, these fine young men and women will shape our future and it was a pleasure to have had the opportunity to be with them in the show ring for the day. 2023 was a very busy year for the Saskatchewan Angus Association. We spent some time looking at our programming and the future through a formal strategic planning process. Thanks to everyone who provided input. Further outcomes are on-going but we do have more focus on education and engagement of both our members, youth and producers in general, and confirmation that our current programs are well received and should be continued. In June we had the pleasure of hosting the National Convention at the Sheraton Cavalier in beautiful downtown Saskatoon. Attendance was great and what a pleasure it was to host Angus members from across the country. We look forward to being part of Convention 2024 in Toronto. In July we saw a huge number of Juniors attend the Canadian Junior Angus Showdown in Swift Current. I’m told it was nearly record attendance with 150 Juniors and 185 head of cattle, second only to Lloydminster numbers in 2017. I personally

The month of August brought us the Saskatchewan Angus summer tour. It was hosted by a group of breeders in the East Central part of the province. On day one the tour saw stops at Parkwood Angus with PK Angus, HS Angus, Dual E Cattle Co., and Double C Red Angus followed by an outstanding Ukranian meal at the Tuffnell hall and entertainment by Quick Dick McDick. Day two took us to Crescent Creek Angus, Triple H Red Angus with 4K Angus, then to Black Ridge Angus and finally to NuHorizon Angus. Supper that evening was held at the Dysart Hall where we got to experience exceptional creations from each competitor in the 1st Annual Verified Beef BBQ Competition. The food and hospitality were amazing and I believe it will be a tour to remember. We moved our Annual General Meeting from January to host it in conjunction with the Annual Masterpiece Sale. It was held October 20th at Gold-Bar Livestock at Caronport, SK. Our goal and purpose with

The change was a positive one and we saw much greater participation than we have seen for many years. We welcome Jeffrey Bloom as a new director and would like to extend our thanks to outgoing director Cathy Montieth. The Masterpiece Sale itself was also a huge success, setting a nice tone for the sale season. November brought us our two Gold shows, first up at Stockade Roundup in Lloydminster where the Saskatchewan Juniors also hosted their Annual Show. Agribition 2023 saw Angus entries increase. The show and quality of cattle was outstanding. All Angus breeders should be very proud of the quality of cattle being produced as a breed. It is not just one breeder, but the entire breed, coast to coast, working hard to make that happen. The All Star Angus Sale held Friday evening at Agribition was again an outstanding event. The sale grossed $500,450 on 26.33 lots for an average of $19,006.83 per lot. Congratulations to all involved. Looking forward, we will be hosting a Breeder Information Session at the newly opened BoviGen facility at Moose Jaw on Sunday, April 21st - all are invited to attend. July will see our annual tour hosted in the North Central area of the province and we are excited to be heading back to Prince Albert in August for the 2024 Gold and Junior Show. They background about half of their calves. The steers are always well received at the Mankota sale barn and have sold to feedlots in Manitoba, Ontario and often to local feedlots and backgrounders. Selling bred heifers, mostly off the ranch, is also an important part of their business. The Chanigs have tagged all of their cattle with the Canadian Angus green tags since the program began in 1999.

Jerry states “We always strived for the best quality to fit our operation, as we are in a drier area of the province.”

Jerry has served on the RM Council, as a director with the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Mankota Stockmen’s Weigh Co. as well as been involved with minor hockey, and both Jerry and Evelyn served on the local rodeo committee. Evelyn volunteered with the local figure skating and rink

boards and served as 4-H leader for the Mankota Beef Club. For 28 years, Evelyn has also worked off the farm as secretary and clerk at Mankota Stockmen’s Weigh Co. Ltd, promoting the Angus feeder calf sale that is usually held on the third Friday in October. Chanig Ranch is managed to promote wildlife and bird habitat with special care and attention paid to grass and water management. Jerry and Evelyn believe their location is perfect for encouraging rare and endangered song and migratory birds to survive and reproduce. Migratory songbirds and wildlife are plentiful and when rainfall is sufficient, rare plants thrive. Rare and endangered species have been seen in the pastures surrounding the home place.

The workload on the ranch is shared by Jerry, Evelyn and their son Trevor and his wife Bonnie, who live 10 miles to the west. In the winter months, those 10 miles can be extraordinarily challenging to travel, but everyone makes it work. Trevor and Bonnie became grandparents in May when Bonnie’s daughter Cassandra and her partner Steve welcomed a baby girl, Ava Lee. Son Carson is working in British Columbia. Jerry and Evelyn’s daughter Tracy and husband Doral live on an acreage east of Swift Current where Doral works in consulting and Tracy has her own business, Power Equine. Their daughters Amber and Tori are both in university. Amber is in her fourth year studying neuroscience at the University of Lethbridge and Tori is in her first year of pre law, also at the University of Lethbridge. Tori is also a rodeo competitor and says that the ranch is “the perfect terrain for ‘legging up’ her rodeo horses”. They all help out when they can. In addition to the cattle, Jerry and Evelyn raise a few quarter horse colts, mostly for their own use, but a few are sold privately. Jerry likes a little thoroughbred in the bloodline.

At Canadian Western Agribition we conducted a youth engagement initiative dubbed, “Tag-Along Tuesday”. My goal was to get 10 Angus exhibitors in the show barn/yards and 10 juniors for this inaugural event. This goal was achieved. The juniors were assigned to a stall or pen for the day and engaged in the daily operation of Agribition for that breeder. Juniors helped feed, wash, blow and fit animals, reviewed tack boxes, toured and watched jackpot and 4H shows, maintained stalls, tied out cattle, prepared the stall beds etc. etc. Afterwards I sent out a small survey to get feedback from the event from the Juniors and Breeders.

Well, I hope that you have had a wonderful fall. At time of writing, “Winter” has certainly done its best to spoil us. The feed and bedding stack use has certainly been reduced so far. I know snow for run off will be needed at some point but a good dump in March or April will do just fine. Followed by some wonderful, timely April and May rains. My crystal ball doesn’t work The feedback was positive: worth a $h!t but one can hope. I am the Chair of the Saskatchewan Angus Member Engagement Committee and a member of the Promotion Committee. Part of our mandate, as established and confirmed in our recent strategic planning process is to educate, enhance knowledge and strengthen youth involvement in our industry. This fall we were involved in a couple of initiatives that worked toward our strategic plan. During Harvest Showdown in Yorkton, we had Mrs. Deb Doetzel, Nu Horizon Angus, lead a school tour session on cow/calf pairs for children in a variety of classrooms. I watched a master educator and cattle person do a wonderful job to educate youth and teachers throughout the day. Deb had items for display and to speak to which aided in a visual, very educational session. Thank you, Deb, for volunteering to do this for the Association, Ag in the Classroom and the youth in the community. There is opportunity

“As a parent, I think it was great! It made my kid come out of her shell and talk to new people. I think it’s a great program and I hope it continues. When I asked Hunter if she would do it again, there was no hesitation, YES!!! And then she asked if I had signed her up for next year.” Michelle Brice Some other feedback was to perhaps split the day between two breeders for each Junior for a variety of experiences and give more of a script/plan for breeders to consider when leading this learning experience. During Agribition there was a great deal of interest from all sorts of folks in the barns. I hope we can expand the number of participants, both breeders and juniors for next year. Thank you to all for their enthusiastic participation. As part of our partnership with Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC), we are offering farm tours in different areas of the province. These tours would be done at a time when it works for you the breeder, the school and the AITC folks. Just to give you an idea, our plan at Northern View is to host a tour after our bull sale. The target grades for our tour would be grade 5 and older. The tentative agenda for our tour would be focused on livestock nutrition, calving, reproduction, and breeding as well as a discussion on where their food comes from with regards to beef “ZIP” Zinc, Iron and Protein. We would wrap up our tour with an Angus burger barbecue for the class. We currently have four other Angus breeders throughout the province willing to host a school tour in 2024. school tour. There is certainly room for moreof you to get on board to host a tour. If you are interested in hosting a tour, please contact me. We are still looking for takers on the Beef Dome presentations as well. The beef dome, a large inflatable dome for gym presentations, will tour the province to a variety of schools. AITC are looking for cattle folks to support them during these beef presentations on sustainability, environmental impacts, nutritional value of beef etc. AITC would provide a script and support you in this during the presentation. Saskatchewan Angus Heritage Award Gordon Olson – Deer Range Red Angus Gordon began raising purebred cattle over 60 years ago. In 1972, their Canadian Western Agribition string included 18 head of Herefords. He expanded into the Red Angus business in the 1990’s and showed them at Agribition for many years as well as the commercial heifer show. Gordon has attended Agribition almost every year. Deer Range currently run approximately 200 cows that graze the hills of the South Saskatchewan River, north of Swift Current. These rugged hills are sometimes green and they always enjoy this part of God’s creation. They realize its all about the enduring relationships we have with our fellow livestock producers and 2023 marked the 21st anniversary for their annual bull sale.

New Director Profile - Jeffrey Bloom in the oil fields of Alberta. He met his wife Khiya, and they got married in Spring 2016 and quickly made the decision to move back to Turtleford, Saskatchewan and the farm. They purchased ten open heifers under the newly formed name of Bloom Cattle Co. In conjunction with his parents, B-Elle Red Angus (Glen and Evelyn Bloom) they have spent the last eight years building off what was started 30+ years ago - Progeny Built on a Trusted Foundation. Whether it be attending his first bull sale at only a few weeks old; or at the age of 5 informing his bus driver that Mary the mother of Jesus must have been AI’d as Joseph was not his father; the ranch life has been heavily ingrained in Jeffrey’s life from a young age. Competing in 4-H throughout his school days has only fed his lowkey obsession into Red Angus Cattle.

Jeffrey looks forward to giving back his time with Saskatchewan Angus, and as many of you may already know he is ALWAYS up for a conversation that evolves around cows. Saskatchewan Angus Honourary President Awards Saskatchewan Angus Honourary President Doug Howe - Howe Red Angus Doug, along with his parents and brother, Dale, started Howe Red Angus in 1988. Shortly after, they expanded their operation to include Black Angus as well. Doug enjoyed many years judging 4-H shows and youth programs followed by major livestock shows across Canada and had the opportunity to be a part of the judging team for the Supreme at Agribition.

Doug was a board member for the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society and Canadian Western Agribition. Doug was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2018. One of Doug’s greatest passions is horses. He owned and trained them for 21 years, as well as being involved in the Saskatchewan Horse Federation. Doug is proud to have his nephew Mike and his family continue Howe Red Angus.

working off the farm at the pulp mill. In 2010, he had slowed down the off-farm job and began to increase the purebred herd to eventually 200 head and 100 commercial cows. In 1988, Ivan started taking bulls to Saskatchewan Livestock Centre and he continued for five years until it closed. Bulls were then sold private treaty out of the yard for a few years before he started taking them to Vermillion College Test Station. Nesset Lake and Bowerman Bros. started the All Black Bull Sale in 2006 and this year marks their 19th Annual Sale. Marketing of females began in 2015 through fall production sales.

Saskatchewan Angus Honourary President Ivan & Julie Demmans – Nesset Lake Angus Nesset Lake Angus started in 1986 with the purchase of 10 cows. Over the years, Ivan slowly increased the herd to 70 purebreds while still

Ivan and Julie have always enjoyed getting to know fellow Angus breeders at various cattle shows, the Saskatchewan Angus & Montana Angus Tours and trips to the AI studs in Billings. Delivering bulls and getting to know their bull buyers are some of their fondest memories, from getting stuck in a pasture out of cell service in The Pas to wrestling calves at a branding that happened to be going on. If you know Ivan you know that he always has time to stop for coffee! Larry & Cheryl’s family have been farming at Mervin in NW Saskatchewan since 1906. They have three children, Carmen, Brad and Melissa. Larry and Cheryl’s nine grandchildren are the 5th generation on the farm. They grain farm 3500 acres and had 200 Purebred Black Angus cows. Melissa, along with her husband Brennan, have 200 commercial cows. The Angus herd started with Cheryl’s parents, John and Cora McNinch (Cloverlake Angus) 65 years ago. Each year they sell 50-60 bulls by private treaty with repeat customers that have been with them for decades.

Larry and Cheryl spend their free time following their grandkids around cheering them on at sporting events and activities. Larry also loves to fish when time allows. Their total herd dispersal was December 19, 2023 in Lloydminster and was very successful.

Edam Fall Fair The 33rd annual Edam Fall Fair was held on October 27/28th. It kicked off on Friday evening with a people’s choice cow/calf, a mixer social as well as included an auction fundraiser for STARS which raised an impressive $10,915! Saskatchewan Angus sponsored the exhibitor lunch on Friday afternoon.

The event is extremely well run with a great board of volunteers and sponsors. If you’ve never been to Edam Fall Fair, I highly recommend you mark it on your calendar for 2024.

Saturday morning offered up the show; which included classes of rancher’s choice steer, prospect steer, rancher’s choice heifer, prospect heifer, pen of 3/5 open replacement heifers, pen of 3/5 bred heifers and the bull pen show. Overall cattle numbers were up year over year, with a large increase in the number of bred heifer pens on offer. A large percentage of the commercial cattle displayed were Angus influenced. The quality of cattle that commercial producers bring out to this event continues to be extremely strong. The bull pen numbers remained strong with great representation of Red

Yorkton Harvest Showdown The 2023 Yorkton Harvest Showdown was a great success this year with the number of bull pens coming back up to pre-covid numbers. The commercial cattle side was a huge success as well; the commercial cattle sale was tremendous with an average of $3500.

Attendance was also up - the weather was beautiful and there was lots to see from the horse pulls to the tradeshow to the FCC Breeders Alley. With the cattle market looking up in the fall, there was great optimism and hope for the fall run and for shows like Yorkton Harvest

Commercial Activities at Canadian Western Agribition The Saskatchewan Angus Association (SAA) Commercial Committee was pleased to be involved in recognizing the Angus exhibitors at the Yards, Bull Pen Alley, as well as to any commercial exhibitors with Angus influenced cattle. This year we gave each exhibitor some chocolates, as well as SAA branded toques and

gloves. The committee enjoys having a chance to have a personal visit and show our appreciation to the exhibitors for exhibiting Angus influenced genetics. The foot traffic in the barn this year was as busy as it has been in years with lots of interest in both Bull Pen Alley and the commercial part of the barn. The Angus

The Saskatchewan Livestock Association was pleased to acknowledge Kenneth Norman Bell for his contribution to his community and to the livestock industry in Saskatchewan with a Scroll of Honour. Ken Bell was born on May 13th, 1949 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Raised on the family farm near Pense, Ken attended elementary school in the Bruceville School District and went to high school in Moose Jaw and Lumsden. His family farm was home to Bell Angus, established in 1942, and he grew up in the cattle business. Ken also enjoyed sports, including baseball, hockey and curling and he continued to pursue those interests for many years. Always a cattleman, Ken enjoyed showing cattle at the summer fairs, including those in Regina and Moose Jaw. He also exhibited cattle at the Toronto Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and Canadian Western Agribition for many years. Ken continues to be involved as a volunteer at Canadian Western Agribition cattle shows. A founding member of the Triple A Bull Sale, he also participated in the Triplex sale and was involved in the Fall Finale sale for many years. Ken has committed his time and expertise as a volunteer to a number of beef cattle organizations including the Saskatchewan Angus Association, where he served as a board member, the Saskatchewan Cattle Breeders Association and the Regina Bull Sale. He has served the Canadian Angus Association as its Honourary President. In 2009, Ken married Sheila Fishley McNally, and welcomed Amanda Gillespie, Ryan and Jason McNally to his life. Ken and Sheila live in Lumsden while continuing to manage the family farm near Pense, where the Bell Angus tradition is now in its 82nd year. Ken and Sheila are both very active in their community. Ken has devoted time to fundraising efforts for local organizations including the Lumsden Curling Club and the Lumsden Lions Club, and continues to serve the Lions Club as an active member and volunteer. In recognition of his contribution to the community and the livestock industry, the Honour Scroll was presented to Kenneth Norman Bell at the 2023 Canadian Western Agribition Angus Show. Saskatchewan Angus Commercial Buyer Draw This past year the Saskatchewan Angus Association (SAA) Commercial Committee was brainstorming a way to try something new and exciting to give back to commercial producers. The Committee decided to do a draw to award commercial producers that purchased a bull in 2023. To be qualified all that was needed was to purchase a bull from an SAA

member; in which the bull was transferred to the commercial producer. We did three draws and each producer received $1000 cash. Feedback from the winners was very positive and the producers were very appreciative.

Out and About . . .

You could say that 2023 closed out on a high note. Commercial bred heifers and young cows brought very good prices for the most part. This was due in part to the strength of the cull market and many producers getting rid of older cows or any females that were on the fence for production or other factors and replacing them with younger females. Although the national cow herd is still in a decline it is showing promise of a future with some optimism still out there in the commercial sector.

The bull, production and consignment sales finished out the year strong. I don't know the exact values but I'm sure that records were approached or broken in some segments (flushes, embryos, live cattle, etc.). Some producers I've talked to have cut back or are not trying to increase the number of bulls they are going to sell this spring due to the decline in the national cow herd as well as them seeing some of their customers getting out of the cattle business. Hopefully the strength of the fall sales will carry through into the spring bull sale run.

Nuturing A Legacy: Succession Planning for Farm Families 1. Frequent family meetings (with all stakeholders, owners, managers, and those emotionally involved) 2. Strategic annual planning 3. An active defined group of shareholders, stakeholders, or board of directors for the family business

Losing a family member is never easy. Loss is an emotional time with solace only found by cherishing the memories. Last year, a number of my friends experienced the loss of the patriarch of their farm family and are now experiencing the outcomes of succession planning. While the succession of a farming enterprise does not always have to be associated with the loss of a family member, this is often where we see the impacts of the succession planning process. Succession planning is a critical aspect of ensuring the longevity and prosperity of family businesses. I encourage you to take the time to begin developing a succession plan, or if it has been several years since you have reviewed it, make it a priority in 2024. This critical foresight can lessen the burden for the next generation while honoring the achievements of the passing generation. I recently attended a farm and ranch estate and succession planning seminar and here are a few of the key take-home messages the farm transition specialist presented: Initiate Early Conversations: Transition means change, and change is almost always scary for many individuals. Changing the course of the farm/ranch operation requires individuals to change and requires them to evaluate factors about themselves, which may include, their perceptions, attitudes, core values, work habits, definition of a legacy, emotional and physical health, and their feelings regarding others’ roles and investments in the farm. Evaluating and working through these factors is not an easy task but important to lay the groundwork for the transition decisions to be made. The specialist noted the three greatest factors that correlate significantly with family business longevity are: Page 62

Understand the legacy: Passing on a farm family business often means a passion for a legacy and rich history. Therefore, it’s important to share significant events with family members that shaped your family’s journey, including the timeline of the operation, the evolution of the ownership structure, and decisions you wish you could do over or would have done sooner. Sharing the family history helps the younger generation gain a greater connection to the legacy and understand and appreciate the previous generations past efforts, risks, and sacrifices. It opens the discussion for current family members to assess and discuss where they are today and allows all generations to discuss what they would like to see in the future. Utilize External Expertise: Family businesses can benefit from seeking external expertise to navigate the intricacies of the estate. Stay in regular contact with your financial advisors to conduct a thorough valuation of the business to monitor its worth. This valuation becomes crucial for equitable distribution among heirs, addressing tax implications, and ensuring the business's financial stability during and after the transition. Engaging consultants, advisors, or mentors with experience in succession planning and family businesses brings fresh perspectives and valuable insights. These external parties can guide the family through potential challenges and offer objective advice including creating a will, setting up trusts, and addressing issues related to ownership transfer. They can assist with developing estate planning goals such as determining who gets what, how and when, how to maximize your estate to reduce expenses, circumvent delays in distribution of assets and avoiding family disputes. While your succession plan is unique to you, utilizing the experience of experts in this area will prevent you from experiencing challenges or obstacles you may not be aware of.

Each family member involved in the business should have a well-defined set of responsibilities that not only fosters accountability but also helps in aligning individual strengths with specific roles, including providing training or mentorship to groom the next generation. Common Farm Family Scenarios: ❍ Active Farming Children – Can the operation support multiple families in the next generation? Does everyone know their role? ❍ Non-active Farming Children – Is there a role

for a non-active child? Should your plan be based on Fair or Equal distribution across the family? ❍ Active Farming Family – Is there a brother

or sister you farm with today? What are their plans? ❍ Non-Family Members – Is there a key person

or property the operation needs to retain? Are there ex-family members that could affect the operation? Regularly Review and Adjust the Plan: “Failing to plan is planning to fail”, is possibly the most important aspect, noted the transition specialist. Succession planning is not a one-time event; it's an ongoing process that should be reviewed regularly and adjusted as circumstances change. Changes in the market, tax rules, family dynamics, or individual aspirations may necessitate modifications to the initial plan to ensure its continued relevance. While the process of developing a plan is not simple, a family-owned business will endure or cease depending upon how effectively they plan for the future. Utilize this article as a starting point or reminder to prioritize the succession planning process to help you and your family to ensure the legacy you have built thrives for generations to come.

The Saskatchewan Junior Angus Association hopes Saskatchewan Angus and Angus Juniors are having a good winter of 2024 and staying warm during these next few months! The Saskatchewan Junior Angus Gold Show was held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan at Stockade Roundup. We would like to thank those who sponsored, judged, and volunteered for this event. Your gracious support of the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Association is deeply appreciated and makes events such as this possible for our youth. Juniors were able to compete in and receive prizes for conformation, showmanship, team grooming, judging, photography, print marketing, and literature. This year we have made the decision to move our Junior Angus Gold Show to Prince Albert Exhibition July 30-August 3, 2024. Details about the event will be made available when plans are set in motion. We are excited to be hosting the show, along with the Gold Show, in a different area but do also want to thank the Lloydminster Exhibition for allowing us to have our show at Stockade Roundup in their excellent facilities the last number of years. We held our 2023 Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, November 21 during Canadian Western Agribition where we held elections and discussed plans for the upcoming year. For this term, myself, Reegan Frey was reelected President; Kylie Willms was re-elected Vice President; Sienna Bohrson was elected Secretary; Tanner Lowe was elected SAA Director; Baxter Blair and Kylie Willms were elected Social Media Managers;

The Saskatchewan Angus Association offers two $1000 scholarships each year to Saskatchewan Junior Angus members. These scholarships can greatly assist juniors financially in their post-secondary education journeys, helping juniors to achieve their educational goals. We would like to congratulate juniors Dylan Frey and Sage Timmons on receiving the 2023 scholarships at the Annual Meeting. The Canadian Junior Angus GOAL (Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders) Conference is to be held in Kelowna, BC February 17-19, 2024. A huge thank you to the Saskatchewan Angus Association and the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Association who have provided travel bursaries to 14 Saskatchewan Juniors for this year’s GOAL conference, with sponsorship from the Saskatchewan Livestock Association. Travel bursaries help to offset costs for flights and accommodations. Canadian Junior Angus members have many opportunities for awards, scholarships, and bursaries. Each year juniors can apply for the Foundation Legacy Scholarships with awards totaling $11,000, the Dick Turner Memorial Scholarship of $1000, Canadian Junior Angus Scholarships totaling $6500, and the Brian Good Memorial Scholarships totaling $5000. There are also bursaries available for travel to CJA and industry events, educational outreach, and more. Good Start for Baby Calves What should happen at the beginning of life for a baby calf to get off to a good start? There is a sequence of several steps that need to happen. Some of these we never witness and take for granted when we find a newborn up and nursing. But along the way, if we are watching it take place, this is what we should see: 1) The calf begins to breathe. This one is obviously critical. Typically as a calf comes out of the birth canal and the umbilical cord is severed, their first reaction is to inhale. Sometimes, a difficult birth, less calf vigor, amniotic fluid in the nostrils or throat, or part of the amniotic sac covering the nose prevents it from happening. If you are observing the process after delivery, you need to help a calf that is not breathing immediately. First, clear the airway. Use your fingers (or small tube with a bulb on the end) to remove fluids from the back of the mouth and remove anything covering the nostrils. Then, insert a piece of straw into the nostril as a probe to try to stimulate a sneeze reflex. This reflex will cause the calf to blow out fluids from the airway and inhale. It should only take a few seconds. Avoid hanging calves over a fence rail or picking up calves by their rear legs. This is a common mistake. The maneuver only makes it more difficult for the calf to breath by putting the weight of internal organs against the diaphragm and lungs which need to move to bring air in.

2) Cleaning and Drying the calf. This is the beginning of the maternal bond during which the cow will lick the calf dry and use her muzzle to stimulate the calf to stand up. Calving this time of year, when calves are Page 76

leaving the cozy environment of the mothers womb at a temperature of 101-102 degrees F and hitting the grounds at temperatures 60 – 100 degrees colder, make this very important to the calf’s survival. An attentive cow may save her calf’s life simply by cleaning it immediately after birth. The cleaning action accomplishes two things: it removes the fluid soaking the calf and stimulates muscle contractions and circulation in the calf. Both prevent excess loss of body heat from the calf which can be conserved to help it stand and begin the process of finding a teat to nurse. Manually drying and warming may be necessary for a weak new-born or in extremely cold winter weather. 3) Nursing. Standing and nursing are extremely critical so that a calf ingests an adequate amount of colostrum in the first few hours of life to acquire passive immunity as well as energy and other nutrients to maintain body heat. In order to have the best chance of survival, a calf needs adequate colostrum within two hours of being born. A calf begins to lose its ability to absorb antibodies from colostrum within six hours following birth and nearly all by 24 hours after birth. Any time you assist the birth of a calf, you should consider giving colostrum with an esophageal tube feeder to the calf before leaving the new pair on their own. First calf heifers with less experience than cows may require a higher level of management and assistance in order to allow steps 2 and 3 to take place. A squeeze chute or head catch will be handy if you find yourself in the situation of assisting with the nursing process.

After steps 2 and 3 are complete the majority of the bonding process is established, but will continue to strengthen over the next several days. During the first few hours post-calving the cow or heifer identifies her own calf and the calf learns who its mother is. If all is proceeding normally a little privacy is best. Too much interference by humans or other animals can be a distraction and delay the process.

Remember the nutritional requirements of the cow or heifer will increase dramatically once she begins lactation. The general rule of thumb is at least 25% more. The dry cow in the last trimester of pregnancy meeting her nutritional requirements on 24 pounds of forage dry matter per day will need 30 - 31 pounds of the same forage dry matter per day post calving. This is even more critical if you are calving out cows and heifers that are thinner than a body condition score five. Cows in a body conditional of 5 – 6 are better prepared to produce adequate quantity and quality of milk and colostrum needed to get a calf off to a good start.
