THE TAPESTRY OF SERVICE JAGJEET PAL SINGH SANDHU

and the Fabric of Community

In the heart of Fatehgarh Churian, Gurdaspur, a visionary was born into the humble abode of the Sandhu family. Jagjeet Pal Singh Sandhu, on July 18, 1980, entered the world with a legacy waiting to be unfolded. His roots traced back to Majahad, Pakistan, from where his grandparents relocated, thus forming, a lineage of resilience and courage, foretelling a future of remarkable achievements and societal contributions. Raised in the lap of Punjab, Jagjeet’s journey unfolded, rooted in the values of his homeland and destined to impact communities far beyond.

COVER STORY

Jagjeet’s early years were cradled in the teachings of his father, S. Satnam Singh, a revered M.A. in Punjabi, a charismatic radio host, and an active member of the Sahit Sabha (literary society). The elder Sandhu wasn’t just a father; he was a mentor whose intellect and values were deeply imbibed by his son. Jagjeet’s life was a tapestry of cultural richness and intellectual pursuits, guided by the wisdom of his father. However, destiny took a dramatic turn in 2003, when the Sandhu family faced an irreplaceable loss. The demise of S. Satnam Singh marked a pivotal moment in Jagjeet’s life, thrusting upon him responsibilities far beyond his years. The tragedy transformed him, embedding a deep sense of duty towards his family and the larger community. Jagjeet’s reflections on his father’s teachings and their shared moments find voice in his poignant poetry:

It was Father›s day yesterday, you were not there but you were there. In the memories we all made, In the games, pranks, jokes together we played., In the Years, months, and days, they won›t fade, Wish could bring you back if I could trade.

This verse captures the essence of loss and longing, yet also celebrates the eternal bond between a father and his son. Jagjeet’s life, post his father’s demise, became a tribute to the man who shaped his very being. Taking responsibility at an early age, Jagjeet ensured the well-being of his younger brother, S. Gagandeep Singh Sandhu, and sister, Sukhmanpreet.

Educational Journey in India

Amidst personal trials, Jagjeet’s commitment to education remained unwavering. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Guru Nanak College, Batala, in April 2004, followed by a Ba chelor of Education from S.V.M.S College of Education, Batala, in 2005, he laid the groundwork for a future in enlightening others. These academic pursuits in India were not merely steps towards a profession but a homage to the value his family placed on

education and the power of knowledge. “Learning ‘how to speak’ is confidence, learning ‘what to speak’ and ‘when to speak’ is wisdom. And the irony is the world’s most stupid people are full of confidence and wise people are full of doubts.” –Jagjeet Through these words, Jagjeet encapsulates the essence of his educational and personal journey a path of discovering one’s voice while understanding the weight of words and the timing of their delivery. This blend of confidence and wisdom would become the cornerstone of his endeavours in the years to come. His journey from an introverted child to a stage presence that captivated audiences, including Bollywood icons like Yash Chopra, at the Mr. Singh International 2005, showcases his evolution under the shadow of his father’s legacy. Jagjeet’s foray into public speaking and hosting major events was not just a career milestone but a testament

to the confidence and charisma inherited from his father.

Embracing a New Chapter: Jagjeet’s Voyage to Canada

In the crisp autumn of September 2013, Jagjeet Pal Singh Sandhu, with his family’s hopes and dreams in tow, set off on a life-altering voyage to Canada. This momentous relocation was not merely a change of geography; it symbolized a leap into a world filled with unknown challenges and boundless opportunities. The transition to Canadian life, while promising, tested Jagjeet’s resolve and tenacity. His commitment to personal and professional development led him to pursue further education in Immigration from Ashton College, Vancouver. This pursuit was not just about career advancement; it was a step towards realizing his vision of aiding others in their journey to make Canada their home. Jagjeet’s resilience was further fueled by his reflections on loss, the resilience ingrained in him through personal trials, and an innate ability to renew his purpose in the face of adversity. The loss of his father, a pivotal event in his life, had earlier instilled in him a profound understanding of the fragility and strength of human spirit. This understanding deepened as he navigated the complexities of building a new life in Canada, reinforcing his empathy towards others experiencing similar transitions.

As spring blooms across Canada, the vibrant and spirited Vaisakhi celebrations of the Sikh community are also in full swing. This ancient harvest festival holds immense significance for Sikhs, marking the founding of the Khalsa order by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. But beyond the joyous parades and colourful festivities, Vaisakhi offers a valuable opportunity to explore the history, values, and contributions of Canada’s Sikh community.

aisakhi parades, or Nagar Kirtans, are a staple of the celebrations, with the Punj Pyaare leading the procession and a decorated float carrying the revered Sikh scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, following closely behind. The Sikh community comes together, singing hymns, performing martial arts, and offering free food to all, regardless of religious or cultural background. These events not only showcase the richness of Sikh culture and faith but also promote interfaith harmony and understanding.

The founding of the Khalsa order on Vaisakhi Day in 1699 was a turning point in Sikh history. Guru Gobind Singh introduced the Nash doctrine, which

emphasized renouncing considerations of caste, religion, superstition, clan, and profession in interactions with others. Through this, Sikhs established a sovereign identity distinct from traditional society, embodying values of service, equality, and compassion.

On this day, Sikhs were also called upon to adopt the Sikh Articles of Faith, which include the Kes, Kangha, Kara, Kirpan, and Kacchera. These articles symbolize a public commitment to the Khalsa, its principles, and a readiness to serve. Today, they continue to serve as powerful reminders of the community’s dedication to their faith and values.

In Canada, Vaisakhi is not only a time for Sikhs to celebrate their faith and culture but also to reflect on their community’s contributions to the country. With a

rich history of immigration, Canadian Sikhs have played a significant role in shaping the nation’s cultural mosaic. Through their involvement in various fields, from business and politics to arts and academia, Sikhs have made lasting impacts on Canadian society. Vaisakhi serves as a time for introspection and renewal of commitment to Sikh values and community service. Canadian Sikhs embrace this opportunity to deepen their connection to their faith and heritage.

So, as the streets fill with music, colour, and the spirit of togetherness, let us take a moment to appreciate the significance of Vaisakhi and the contributions of Canada’s Sikh community. In doing so, we continue to promote unity, inclusivity, and a greater understanding of our diverse nation.

For two decades, the Surrey Vaisakhi Parade has graced the community streets. Organized by Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, this year’s event will take place on Saturday, April 20.

This annual tradition is a religious celebration for Sikhs around the world, commemorating the birth or establishment of Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. The parade, featuring floats, live music and dancers, and community groups, will begin and end at the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar Temple, and the procession of over 2,500 participants will travel through various streets before returning to the Temple. With over 500,000 attendees expected, it is anticipated to draw one of the largest crowds ever. Local businesses and families will sponsor hundreds of booths along the parade route, offering free food and treats to onlookers. Limited parking is available in close proximity to the parade route, and attendees are strongly encouraged to utilize public transportation to reach the event.

Essentially if the property is sold within 2 years of its purchase, the new tax would apply. The tax rate will be the highest for those who owned properties for the shortest period and will decline the longer the property is owned. The tax rate will be 20% for income earned from properties sold within 365 days of purchase and will decline to zero between 366 and 730 days. You may be exempt from paying tax on income earned from the sale of our property if you are eligible for an exemption. For more information please visit BC home flipping tax - Province of British Columbia (gov.bc.ca).

FINDING CLARITY AMIDST CHANGE PAVNEET’S COUNSELING WISDOM UNVEILED

Modern world has become so fast paced that there are frequent changes and transitions, such as career shifts, relocation, relationship changes, financial changes and so forth. Such life transitions lead to shifts in an individual’s life circumstances, roles, or identities. These changes can be both positive and challenging, and often require adjustments and adaptation. It’s important to recognize that individuals may experience multiple transitions simultaneously, and the impact of each transition can vary based on personal circumstances and support systems. The diversity in life transitions requires unique adjustments and coping strategies. In a world where mental health is gaining recognition, psychotherapy stands out as a beacon of hope for many individuals seeking support and healing. Psychotherapy, often known as counseling or talk therapy, is a collaborative and structured form of mental health treatment that involves a therapeutic relationship between a trained professional and an individual, couple, family, or group. Rooted in the principles of psychology, psychotherapy aims to address a wide range of emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges faced by individuals. The therapeutic process unfolds through open and confidential communication, fostering trust and empathy. By engaging in thoughtful dialogue and exploration, the therapist and client work together to identify patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that may contribute to distress or hinder personal growth. Psychotherapy encompasses various theoretical approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, humanistic therapy, and more, each tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual. The therapeutic journey often involves setting specific goals, gaining self-awareness, and developing coping strategies to navigate life’s complexities. The duration and frequency of psychotherapy sessions vary, providing flexibility to address short-term concerns or engage in longer-term personal development.

Despite its proven effectiveness, psychotherapy continues to face stigma, especially within the South Asian community. Cultural norms, misconceptions, and fear of judgment often deter individuals from seeking help. This stigma is particularly prevalent in the IndoCanadian community, where mental health discussions may be met with silence or shame. Overcoming counseling stigma on a personal level involves acknowledging and challenging internalized beliefs, fostering self-compassion, and reframing one’s perspective on seeking mental health support. It begins with recognizing that seeking counseling is a courageous and proactive step toward well-being rather than a sign of weakness. Embracing the understanding that mental health is an integral part of overall health helps dispel the societal myths and negative perceptions surrounding counseling.

As a champion for mental health awareness, Pavneet strives to break down barriers and promote open dialogue within the Indo-Canadian community. Through education, advocacy, and compassionate care, she empowers individuals to prioritize their mental well-being and seek the support they deserve. Pavneet’s approach emphasizes collaboration and empowerment, where clients actively engage in their healing journey, aligning with their values and goals. By incorporating mindfulness practices and drawing from various therapeutic modalities, she tailors her approach to meet the unique needs of each individual or couple. Pavneet understands the importance of cultural sensitivity in therapy, recognizing the unique experiences and challenges faced by her clients. By fostering a safe and nonjudgmental space, she creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable addressing their mental health concerns without fear of

The Beauty of VAISAKHI

From year to year, there are a couple of things that we all need to renew. No, I’m not referring to our car insurance or gym memberships. The renewal that I’m referring to is a renewal of our spirit and our planet. Vaisakhi, which marks the Indian, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan New Year as well as the start of the spring harvesting season, is a time for such renewal.

For followers of the Sikh religion, the majority of whom can trace their ancestry back to the Indian state of Punjab, the Vaisakhi day of 1699 was an historic and vital occasion that renewed a sense of confidence and courage in a people withered by religious persecution and an oppressive and inescapable social hierarchy.

About two hundred years had passed since the 1st prophet of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, had begun sowing the seeds of equality, freedom of worship, and service to humanity in the late 15th century. After two centuries of nurturing, which saw the martyrdom of the 5th and 9th Gurus, those seeds were finally ready to bloom and uplift the withered masses.

From far and wide, they were summoned to travel to Anandpur, the city of bliss, by the 10th prophet, Guru Gobind Singh, who reunited his disciples, regardless of caste, social status, occupation, or regional differences, on the most auspicious of days in the month of Vaisakh.

But the Guru was not in a festive mood. Instead, he asked for a Sikh to offer his head in the name of righteousness. The spring air fell silent, which it remained until the silence was broken by one brave soul, who stood up, humbly bowed his head before the Guru, and entered a tent from which the Guru alone exited with his sword drawn. One by one, four more volunteers would disappear into that tent. And then it happened.

The five volunteers, who would become immortalized as the 5 Beloved Ones, who hailed from different parts of India, held different occupations, and previously belonged to different castes, reemerged unharmed from the Guru’s tent as equals, adorned in shining new regalia, reborn as the Khalsa, the brotherhood of the pure. But what the massive crowd at Anandpur beheld next was a sight unseen by history.

The prophet himself dropped down on one knee before the 5 Beloved Ones and, in so doing, declared himself a disciple of the people, a disciple of the Khalsa, who would seek their counsel, listen to their advice, and ultimately respect their will. Seeing this unprecedented spectacle, the congregation’s spirit soared sky-high as democracy was forever redefined right before its eyes.

At a time when India was wilting under the tyranny of the Mughal Empire, Guru Gobind Singh, saintsoldier and pious patriot, did not just believe in the revolutionary power of democracy – he embodied those democratic principles and embedded them in the very core of the Sikh faith. Indeed, on that Vaisakhi day 325 years ago, Guru Gobind Singh empowered people from all walks of life, not just Sikhs, to take control of their own destinies; to stand up to injustice; to break down artificial barriers limiting their progress in life; to worship in whichever way was right for them; to serve their fellow human beings; and, above all, to recognize the oneness of humanity.

Vaisakhi day, which this year falls on April 13th, also symbolizes wealth, abundance, and prosperity. People from all parts of India, from north to south, who rely on agriculture for their livelihood, give thanks to Mother Nature for the harvest she has blessed them with. They rejoice by singing, dancing, and praying for continued good fortune in the coming year. It is also a time when we must remember to share our prosperity with those who are not as fortunate. And although Vaisakhi celebrations are simultaneous and widespread, make no mistake, they are as diverse as the South Asian community itself.

MMEN’S MENTAL HEALTH

Poor mental health can affect people of any gender, but mental health outcomes for men and women aren’t equal. Due to societal expectations of masculinity, men are less likely to talk to others about their feelings, so they suffer in silence. We’ll be looking at some of the facts about men’s mental health, and what we can do to change the conversation.

ental illness affects people of every gender, and while the specifics may differ, it’s incorrect to assume that men don’t struggle simply because they are often portrayed, or expected, to be strong and silent. This expectation is rooted in toxic masculinity and has resulted in poor mental health outcomes for men. Men are more likely to experience substance abuse and exhibit violence, and more likely to die by suicide. Skewed expectations around how men should display emotion can lead to a fear of being judged, or for crying or appearing “weak.”

Media and television shows often portray crying men as something to be mocked, but mocking this healthy, human emotional release only serves to discourage men from crying and talking to others about their difficulties. Getting support and how to start talking about it

If you identify as male and you’re struggling with your mental health, you’re not alone. It might seem like talking about it makes you weak, but that couldn’t be
