Happy New Year! I trust you had an excellent celebration over New Year’s Eve and you’re all set to take on new challenges, new diets and re-imagined exercise routines. Here at Campus Media, there’s renewed vigour in our team’s workout sessions, possibly in preparation for all the feasting when Chinese New Year comes along. For now, we’re sticking to salad and yong tau foo. Food and festivities go hand in hand and it’s always a great feeling ushering in a festival whether you’re celebrating it or not. Although, I am not too fond of the crazy traffic jams that normally happen pre-CNY, it’s always great to buy your essentials on discounts, visiting friends, planning a holiday or staying home to enjoy quiet time with family during the long hols. But if you wish to hang around in the Klang Valley, be sure to check out some of the delectable Chinese hawker food recommended by our writer Chris Yee on page 56. He swears by them. In the meantime, don’t forget to also check out the Chinese New Year beliefs and traditions on page 28. Most of us don’t realise how certain traditions came about and why they are still practised today. With that, Gong Xi Fa Cai dear readers. May the Year of the Rooster be filled with prosperity, wealth and health for each and every one of you. Thank you for being a loyal reader of Campus Plus. Huat ah!

Classrooms of the Future While it may not be a radical change, the way we study in our classrooms every day is becoming ever more advanced and fun. With increased access to technology, there is a greater demand for digital content and experiences for the younger generation, said Microsoft General Manager Nik Ariff Nik Omar. His sentiments were echoed by Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) director Prof Madya Dr Arham Abdullah. Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation senior lecturer Dr. Kalai Anand Ratnam demonstrated a few ways in which technology can improve the way we study and improve lecturer-student relations. Citing Office 365, Skype, and even video games as a way to get students to interact with education, we are stepping into a whole new era of learning.

A COLLECTION OF WHAT?

JANUARY 2017

IT WOULDN’T BE OUT OF THE ORDINARY TO SEE SOMEONE WITH ENTIRE BOXES OF OLD COINS AND CURRENCIES OR STAMPS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. BUT LET’S BE HONEST – THAT’S COME TO BE MORE THAN A LITTLE CLICHÉ. HERE’S A COLLECTION OF PEOPLE COLLECTING THINGS THAT YOU NEVER KNEW CAN BE COLLECTED.

BELLY BUTTON LINT Despite taking up the least space and weighing the least on this list, this collection is one that will probably invoke the strongest reactions of all. Ever since 1984, Graham Baker has religiously ‘harvested’ his belly button lint every morning before he steps into his bath ever since he found some on a holiday in Brisbane. Not having any grand plans, he just collects out of curiosity of how much lint one can produce in their lifetime. He said that the amount he

produced differed, according to the clothes he wore. He claimed that thermal underwear produced the most. With three bottles of lint weighting 22.1 grams, he doesn’t plan to stop until he is no longer capable of doing it.

LOCKS OF HAIR FROM FAMOUS PEOPLE Marilyn Monroe, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Elvis Presley, Edgar Allen Poe… You name them, and John Reznikoff probably has a lock of their hair. An

expert collector with an encyclopaedic knowledge of rare and historic manuscripts, Reznikoff is incredibly interested in the stories behind each and every strand of hair he has collected. One of the most expensive collections in the world, a lock of hair in his collection can

cost up to hundreds of thousand dollars. His most prized possession is a lock of hair from Abraham Lincoln, cleared from the wound of his assassination, complete with documents and papers verifying that the hair is real.

BURNT FOOD While a normal person might regard a piece of toast exposed to the element of fire, with an F-bomb and a sigh, Deborah Henson-Conant, a Grammyaward winning harpist, has opened a museum to display them in all their…. Um… glory. It all started when Deborah got an extremely long phone call while cooking cider, starting off the now sizeable collection of burnt and ruined food. With wondrous displays titled “Thrice Burnt Potato”, “Dark Rye – Very Dark”, “It Could’ve Been Lasagne”, and “Hash Blacks”, one can observe the culinary failings of humanity and marvel at how much one can mess up in the kitchen, along with silent prayers and mutterings of gratitude that such disasters have not happened to you (yet).

BACK SCRATCHERS Akin to an itch that can’t be scratched, Manfred Rothstein’s compulsion to collect back scratchers was borne. With 675 back scratchers from 71 different countries on display in his office, the dermatologist currently holds the record for “biggest collection of back scratchers”. The doctor is also known to ask his patients who are planning to travel to different parts of the world to attempt to find variants of his beloved collector’s item. From bamboo and plastic to ivory and jade, Rothstein finds a special kind of satisfaction from collecting novelty scratchers, amazed that there can be so many variations on a simple stick with hands.

PENISES In 1997, retired teacher Sigurður Hjartarson decided to erect a museum dedicated to the

phalluses of all kinds of Icelandic animals. His museum has penetrated public interest with its curious collection. News of his collection spread across the globe, making it a throbbing success. Tastefully named “The Icelandic Phallological Museum”, the place houses a collection of 280 specimens taken from 93 species of animals – 55 from whales, 36 from seals and 118 from land animals. Its largest display is a 170cm (67 inch) long phallus

that belonged to a blue whale, while its smallest exhibit (2mm [0.08 inches]) used to be the pride of a hamster. While reception of the museum was initially a little woody due to the pricklier members of the society, no one has actually given him the shaft yet since he was able to argue that his collection is valuable for the study of phallology. The collection also features phallic art, lamps made of the scrotum of bulls, and even a mythical penis section, featuring imagined phalluses from creatures with origins from folklore. Hjartarson is still waiting for a final member to complete his collection: The human one!

LIFE IN MUSIC

JANUARY 2017

T

here is nothing more meaningful than the pages of one’s own life, many say. And what better way to get your story and your voice heard than through the magnificent power of music. Signed under KIL Entertainment, this highly insightful rapper invites us into the sanctuary of his soul through his rap. Tell us a bit about yourself. I do a lot of music, and I have an EP coming out soon. I try to make my work fun – my passion is music, and I’ve made that into my life’s work. I do a lot of club emceeing too, which is completely a different ball game from normal emceeing, but I’m passionate to do it. I have almost six years of experience doing that. I’ve made it into one of my professions as well. What would you say your influences for writing songs are? The whole element of hip-hop, and watching the greats like Tupac and Biggie Smalls. I started off in the era of baggy pants and when 50 Cent was big. I studied hip-hop more, and I realised that ‘Oh wow, there is knowledge to be attained before you write rap.” There is a skill set that has to be developed in order to write rhymes. Ever since then, I tried to practice to get my song writing even better. Y’know how in rap, you have to do punchlines, and metaphors and all that? I’m always growing in that terms. What do you usually write about in your songs? I tend to write about my life story in my music. That’s why I don’t have a stage name; I just use my real one. I feel that if you’re talking about yourself, you might as well use your real name. Do you come up with your own beats? I collaborate with other producers. For me, I work a lot with composers when I get into the studio; I try to give my two cents and try to form a beat as well. Who would you most desire to collaborate with? Wow. Hmmm… I’d say J Cole. He’s an inspiration to me because he has the same ideology of making music about himself and his story. I’m usually inspired by J Cole and I would really love to just have a conversation with him, and get into his mind and see how he does things. He’s the artist that inspires me the most.

Do you have any rituals or practices before you perform? I would just recite the verses, just to get myself in the mood before I get on stage. I’ll just do it acapella beforehand. Do you usually write your lyrics beforehand? Are you able to spontaneously rap? It depends, actually. When it comes to my own songs, I’ll take the time to carefully think of the lyrics beforehand because I want people to know what I’m saying, and the message has to be clear. But if it’s a jam session, then I can let loose and just let it flow. What’s your ultimate dream as a rapper? To be heard, man. *laughs* To gain more audiences both locally and internationally, and to get my name out there. Where do you see yourself in the future? Hopefully, I’ll be able to land a place as one of the greats in music and hip-hop. It’s a long shot, but I think it’s really possible if I keep working hard. So that is the dream. If there were a list of top ten rappers in Malaysia, I hope to be on it. What motivated you to start rapping in the first place? I think it was escapism that started everything off. When I was a kid, I’d just shut everything off, escape everything and focus on the music. So I think that triggered me to want to start making music. Also because I’ve always liked reading and poetry – when it comes to

the technicality of having to rhyme and have it sync to the music, it really intrigued me, and I wanted to master it. Ever since then, I’ve been trying to pick up tricks of how to do it. Is the competition tough for rappers? Hip-hop and rap is a really competitive sport. That’s why there’s rap battles all around. I started off battling first – I joined a lot of freestyle and hip-hop battles when I first started out. At the end of the day, healthy competition only makes you better. Sometimes you’d just battle for fun, y’know? Just exchange rhymes and lines. When it gets tough, how do keep yourself motivated? Just gotta keep the momentum going, man. That’s what I try to do to keep myself going. Do you have a favourite song? How about your favourite song that you’ve written? My all-time favourite song would be Hit ‘Em Up by Tupac, because that made me want to start my journey. My favourite song that I wrote is ‘Shine’. It’s about my story and making it into history. Another one is ‘All The Way’ it’s produced by Roshan Jamrock of K-Town clan. Any advice for potential rappers who are looking to start out? If you’re gonna go, then you should go all the way. Don’t stop in the middle, and try not to get discouraged.

NAVIN KARU

JANUARY 2017

With multiple restaurants and 55 staff under his wings, Navin Karu’s love for food, as well as the F&B business will not diminish. In fact, this German-born entrepreneur who owns Vin’s Resto Bar & Velvet Lounge and the latest, Manja Restaurant & Bar, has been riding on his passion ever since he discovered it. A double degree holder in Marketing & International Tourism from Victoria University, Navin admitted that the journey to success in the industry was not as ‘tasty’ as the food in his restaurants.

20

dream is to take people “toMyparts of the city that can transport them elsewhere. ”

What got you into F&B? I lived in Germany and London for 12 years and I have a lot of food experiences. Once I returned to Malaysia, I didn’t even really bother to get a degree but I did it anyway to make my parents happy. Even then I always knew that I wanted to open a restaurant because I want to be around food. I love the whole experience that comes with food. What were you doing to get to where you are currently? The first step was to learn how to be a boss and how to manage staff because I didn’t have prior experience. Through my research, I found that Shell was one of the top employers in Malaysia, so I aimed for a job there. I didn’t get a call from them but I kept finding means to reach them. In the meantime, I took my first job at CIMB bank before moving on to Marcus Evans but I never lost sight of what I really wanted which was to work with Shell. Finally, they contacted me and I was chosen for the graduate training programme. I learnt a lot of things; how to deal with people, chain management strategy and their goals. So with that knowledge, I started my project plan for my first restaurant, Vin’s. I didn’t have any money at the time, so I bought Shell’s share units using my three months’ salary and I sold them to save up for my business but it still wasn’t enough. I borrowed from my father, my family, and friends. With that, I opened Vin’s. What were your initial expectations before you started the business? What I thought it would be and what it actually is, was completely different. I realised that the years of education was redundant. I didn’t

have enough skills and knowledge to do this business. The only thing that I learnt from college that was useful to my business was how to deal with people and social circle. That was worth more than formal education. Everything was wrong because I didn’t know a thing and I hired wrong people for the job. So what I did was to experience every aspect of the job myself. I became the kitchen helper, learning the system inside out. Basically, it came down to hands-on experience. Why did you go head on with it even though you had no knowledge about the business? I come from a family that doesn’t require me to look after my parents financially, so there was no motivation for me to work a normal job and earn a medium salary doing something that I don’t even enjoy. If you put me in an area that I’m interested in, I perform. So I knew that if I want to develop myself further, I needed to do something that I’m actually interested in. What is the thought process before you decided to grow and expand your business? The creativity to express myself and grow my staff. I like developing people, seeing someone come in as a cleaner and grooming them into a manager. I don’t expand for money because it’ll never go well if your goal is just to make money. What is the most difficult aspect of owning and managing these restaurants? Handling people because business is about people and they’re going to represent themselves based on how they grew up. You have to really understand them to be able to approach them. What is your advice for youth who want to do something different as compared to what their parents want them to do? I don’t believe in depending on formal education. I don’t believe in compelling a child into something that is not relevant for the future. You need to spend time unlearning what’s been taught to you and you need to question everything around you.

DRAMAS OF 2016

1

JANUARY 2017

A YEAR OF

Good Dramas

2

We’re all excited for new beginnings. Just as we’re excited about the New Year, we figured it’s not a bad idea to take one last glance at the past. Below is our pick on a few of the best Korean dramas of 2016. 1

DOCTORS

Doctors is a relatable drama that touches the hearts of many. Yoo Hae-Jeong (Park Shin Hye) had a tough childhood. Despite her outgoing personality and tough exterior, she has a darker side that makes trusting people an impossible task and relationships a huge no-no. Now a doctor, she has to compete with a former classmate and try to uncover the reason behind her grandmother’s death with the help of her long-lost love, Hong Ji Hong (Kin Rae Won).

2

3

An unconventional love unfolds between Kang Chul (Lee Jong Suk), a character in a webtoon ‘W’, and Oh Yeon Joo (Han Hyo Joo), a surgeon in the real world. The webtoon was written by Yeon Joo’s father who mysteriously disappeared after he wrote the final chapter. Yeon Joo is transported into the webtoon where she meets Kang Chul after watching the final scene on her father’s computer. With that, she needs to figure out how to return to the real world and the key is Kang Chul.

4 3

MOONLIGHT DRAWN BY CLOUDS

This drama tells the story of Hong Ra-On (Kim Yoo-Jung) that gives men advice on dating by disguising herself as a man and one of her cases led her straight to Crown Prince Hyomyeong (Park Bo-Gum). He, of course, has no idea that Hong Ra-on is a girl and becomes interested in ‘him’. This is a coming-of-age story of the Crown Prince and how he fell in love.

Iljimae’s Lee Jun Ki is paired with singer IU in Scarlet Heart Ryeo. The story is about a 21stcentury girl Hae Soo (IU) that is transported back to the Goryeo period during a total eclipse of the sun where she meets many princes including Prince Wang So (Lee Jun Ki) that is known for his cold character. Hae Soo finds herself trapped in her 16-year-old body and a messy love story that involves princes and battles.

MUZZA’S MAYHEM

JANUARY 2017

M

eet Muzza’s Mayhem, consisting of guitarist and vocalist Muzaffar Shah aka Muzza, bassist and vocalist Aizat aka Bob, and drummer and vocalist Hafiz aka Smurf. Formed in 2011, this classic rock band performs in a variety of languages including French, German, Japanese, Arabic, Thai, Chinese, and Hindi. How did you guys meet? I was at a wedding function and I saw who would later become my drummer and my previous bassist in the wedding band. Since I was actually looking to form a band at that point of time, I offered them a chance to be part of the band after seeing them perform. I was 21 and that’s when I started performing in pubs with my band as opposed to performing solo. What role would you say each band members play? When it comes to music, Bob is definitely the more serious one while Smurf and I are the wackier ones. As a band, where do you see yourselves in five years? Established to the point where people know who we are - our characters and our repertoire of music. I think it’s important to establish this locally first before we venture out of the

music by eusoff andrei

country. We’re also targeting to play at more festivals instead of pubs currently.

the music scene is shifting towards rock again after all that pop and rap.

Which is your favourite venue you have performed so far? In terms of pubs, it would have to be the On Line Pub. I’ve even burnt my guitar there. It still hurts to watch the video of the incident. But I just did it because I felt like it at the moment. We’ve actually even set drums on fire there before – luckily our hair didn’t catch on fire! Most of the patrons there come knowing that Muzza’s Mayhem will be performing and they come to enjoy the music.

Do you guys ever get stage fright? How do you deal with it? Yea, every time. Even if I’m performing the same song at the same venue with the same crowd, I still get nervous. Maybe its human nature – it’s important to adapt. After the first song I’m fine but I still feel myself getting a bit shaky and shy during the first song of every performance. In terms of dealing with it, I get into the music and start focusing less on the crowd.

What’s a little known fact about Muzza’s Mayhem? That we are shy, most of the time, when we aren’t on stage. We’re quiet people and we prefer to sit at home as opposed to spending time outside.

What’s your advice for those wanting to perform but do not know where to start? Just go for it. Just keep doing what you’re doing and believe in what you do. Don’t expect everyone who hears your music to like what they hear. Just do it for yourself and be sincere. For example, we know that classic rock isn’t a popular genre among people these days but we decided to fight for the genre. Remember, if you’re satisfied with your own material, other people will like it too.

What’s your opinion on the local music scene right now? I am grateful that listeners nowadays are apt at differentiating between good and bad songs and

REVIEWS

DNCE | DNCE

GLORY DAYS (DELUXE) | LITTLE MIX

If one had to summarise DNCE’s self-titled debut album in two words, this would be it: good vibes. From tracks like ‘DNCE’ (yeap, the song was written before the band was named). It speaks of being too drunk to even care about it (hint: it’s spelling) and dancing the night away to ‘Good Day’ which preaches positivity and living life the way you want to. This is definitely an album to destress to. While fans will recognise three of the tracks featured on this album from their EP, other tracks to note include ‘Doctor You’, ‘Blown’, ‘Naked’ and ‘Be Mean’.

After proving to their fans that they’re anything but just another girl group with the release of ‘Secret Love Song’, Brit artistes Little Mix are back with their fourth studio album. Putting it simply, if you absolutely detest songs centering on relationships, then this album probably isn’t for you. Otherwise, its one you should definitely check out as there is a certain sincerity behind their vocals that makes the message behind the songs come across quite clearly. Look out for ‘F.U.’, ‘Oops’, ‘Power’, ‘Nobody Like You’, and the acoustic version of ‘Touch’.

STARBOY | THE WEEKND

DARKNESS AND LIGHT | JOHN LEGEND

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye aka The Weeknd is back with his third studio album which is haunting without coming across as creepy. In short, this would be the kind of album that you would listen to over a few drinks with some buddies on a Thursday night, which is what we have come to expect of The Weeknd by now. Aside from the title track, look out for ‘False Alarm’, ‘Secrets’, ‘Six Feet Under’, ‘All I Know’, and ‘Die For You’.

John Legend’s fifth studio album is something which starts off okay but gets much better as it goes on. True to his style, the music is relaxing while still meaningful and the album as a whole is definitely something which you should check out if you’re a fan. While I’m not particularly a fan of the title track in the case of this album, don’t forget to check out ‘Penthouse Floor’, ‘ Love Me Now’, and ‘Surefire’.

LOVE AND MEMORIES

JANUARY 2017

g n i t i s i v Re

T

IF ONLY WE COULD ERASE EVERY MEMORY WE HAVE OF SOMETHING OR SOMEONE THAT HAS RECENTLY CAUSED US GRIEF, WOULD WE BE BETTER OFF FORGOING ALL MEMORIES, BE IT GOOD OR BAD, THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE PERSON OR SIMPLY LIVE WITH ALL OF THEIR MEMORIES TOGETHER, AND ALL THE EMOTIONS THAT GO WITH IT? THIS IS THE QUESTION THAT ‘ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND’ AIMS TO ASK.

he movie tells the story of the failing relationship between the shy, introverted Joe Barish (Jim Carrey) and the untameable, free-spirited Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) who just wants to get the most out of life. However, their relationship soured, and Clementine elected to have her memories of Joel erased through an experimental procedure performed by Lacuna Inc., a company that specialises in memory erasure. Wracked with grief, Joel decided to get the procedure done to him too. The narration is done through a non-linear fashion; the viewer is often propelled back and forth through a recollection of Joel’s memories with Clementine, as the vast majority of the film takes place in Joel’s mind. The viewer will experience their relationship backwards, from the troubled latter days of their relationship, to their days as a happy couple, and finally the fateful day that they met. Combining elements of science fiction, drama, romance and comedy, Eternal Sunshine is one that will keep viewers racing through different emotions – sadness, joy, and even laughter. Despite being associated with comedy films, Carrey manages to pull off an excellent performance as the bashful, sometimes cowardly Joel Barish. Although, not able to resort to the exaggerated movements and facial contortions he has come to be known for, Carrey manages to portray the range of emotions his character feels – love,

awkwardness, and one that we feel most strongly – grief. Kate Winslet’s character as the impulsive, over-the-top Clementine Kruczynski is also incredibly infectious – her outgoing personality and ‘carpe diem’ mentality, leads her to live life fast and to try everything she can; but it ultimately leads to a whole lot of irresponsible decisions (such as erasing Joel in the first place). The chemistry between them is extremely palpable. Despite being involved in arguments in the latter days of their relationship, one can see what attracted the two characters to each other in the first place. In the end, one can’t help but feel a sense of melancholy – the movie invites the viewer into the lives of Joel and Clementine through snippets of memory, all that time spent being happy with someone they love, then reverting into a state of obliviousness when the next dawn arrives. Viewers are also treated to sub-plots regarding the lives of the employees of Lacuna Inc – Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), Patrick (Elijah Wood), Mary (Kirsten Dunst) and Stan (Mark Ruffalo). At the end of the movie, one really begins to realise that memories, be it the good or bad, is all we have of someone we hold dear. While someone may be gone from your life, they aren’t truly gone – a piece of them will always live on, inside of you. But if you get rid of that too, then they truly will be… gone.

THE ORIGINS OF THE RED FESTIVAL

JANUARY 2017

D N A E TH

C

hinese New Year, otherwise known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most celebrated festivals around the world. Celebrated in Malaysia (of course), Singapore, China, Vietnam and the two Koreas, as well as by pockets of Chinese people around the world, it is truly a spectacular event. However, while many people practice it, how many truly know the meaning behind this celebration?

THE LEGEND OF THE NIAN MONSTER (A.K.A. THE HISTORY OF CHINESE NEW YEAR)

During ancient times, there used to be a ferocious monster called the Nian, who had long teeth and sharp claws. By the end of every lunar year, the Nian would come to the villages to hunt people, eat their livestock and ravage their homes. The villagers were forced to vacate their homes and move to the secluded mountains every year to escape the Nian’s ferocious attacks.

One year, while everyone was desperately packing up to escape, there was an old man beggar who calmly sauntered up to the village, asking for food. Amongst the people bursting to take refuge in the mountains, there was an old lady who took pity on the old man. She offered him food, and asked him to follow the rest of the villagers up the mountain lest he dies when the Nian comes. The old man, however, calmly requested to stay one night in the lady’s house, and that he had a way to chase the Nian away, once and for all. The lady, still sceptical, begged the man to follow her up the mountain, but the man insisted that he had three secret weapons against the Nian. At her wit’s end, she had to leave the man in the village and hope for the best. That day at midnight, the Nian came as predicted, and began rampaging, and destroying the village. However, it noticed one particular house with its lights still brightly lit. Unfamiliar to this sight as the place was normally dark and abandoned in the

past, the Nian approached it cautiously. Upon closer inspection, it saw hundreds of candles, as well as red papers adorning the house. Terrified of the brightness of the light and the colour, the beast shrieked and roared, scrambling to get away from it. It was at this moment that the old man swung open the doors, revealing several firecrackers making extremely loud exploding noises. The Nian immediately fled, utterly terrified, never to return again. The villagers returned to find that their village was (mostly) intact, and the lady was amazed that the man was able to repel the Nian. After that, it became a tradition to paste red spring couplets on the doors to the house, light candles and firecrackers to ward off evil spirits and bad omens, and hope for a lucky, grand and prosperous year ahead.

LION DANCES

The loud and grandiose lion dance is something that draws the attention of the entire area every time it is performed. Drawn to the clashing of cymbals and thumping of skin drums, the timeless art never fails to wow kids and adults alike with their flashy dancing combining balance, dexterity and kung fu moves. It is believed that the lion symbolises courage, stability, and superiority. The dance, coupled with the loud percussions and firecrackers, is believed to chase away evil spirits. The dance is performed by two people – one for the head, and one for the body. It usually starts and ends at a temple, where the lions pay respect to the temple, its deities, and the ancestral hall. The lions will then dance down the street, bringing good luck and fortune to all. The dramatic climax of the Lion Dance would be (cai qing), which literally means ‘plucking the greens’. The lion will pluck the auspicious vegetables like lettuce that is hung on a pole, or placed on a table, and is tied together with a red packet (ang pow). The lions will then ‘eat’ the vegetables, and ‘spit’ it out, but keep the red packet.

RED PACKETS (ANG POW)

Gong Xi Fa Cai, Hong Bao Na Lai!!! (Wishing you a prosperous year, now give me the ang pows!) is one of the chants often shouted by children when it comes to the time of year. Regarded to be one of the most anticipated practices of Chinese New Year (by kids, teens and unmarried adults), this tradition is said to chase away bad luck. The tradition is said to have been derived from yasui qian, a practice that was believed to help younger children ward of sickness and death, and let them live longer. It was said that in ancient times, there was a demon that touched children on the head, causing them to be deathly ill. A worried couple decided to pray to their god for protection, and the god sent down eight fairies to protect the child. The eight fairies disguised themselves as coins to fool the demon,

and when the demon attacked, they shone so brightly that the demon was scared away. After that, the villagers began spreading the word to give out red envelopes filled with money to protect their children.

OTHER PRACTICES TO WARD OFF BAD LUCK

The Chinese have many practices and beliefs when it comes to the Spring Festival, and while many Chinese don’t follow all of them to a tee, it is still enforced in many homes. •

• •

Cutting, or washing of hair is forbidden, as it is believed that good luck would be ‘washed away’, or ‘cut off’. Sweeping on the first day of Chinese New Year is strictly forbidden, as it is believed that doing so would ‘sweep’ away all wealth and prosperity. Spring cleaning All debts should be paid off as any leftover debts brought into the new year would invite more debt. No borrowing or lending of money should occur either. Black or white clothes should also not be

worn, as they are the colour of mourning, and is associated with death and bad luck. Knives or scissors are not to be used, or it may ‘cut’ off fortune.

FOOD OF PROSPERITY

The symbolisms of the Chinese people don’t only end with practices; the food prepared during Chinese New Year are chock full of it too. There are many foods prepared during the Chinese New Year that carry meanings beyond taste buds. Here are a few of the more prevalent dishes during the auspicious Spring Festival.

MANDARIN ORANGES (GAN): The fruit is a popular sight amongst the Chinese when it comes to this period in time as not only does it taste refreshing and sweet, it is said to bring wealth and good luck due to the fact that the Cantonese pronunciation for the characters for gold and mandarins sound similar. Many families display the oranges to welcome wealth and luck.

FISH (YU): Due to the Chinese character for fish sounding similar to that of abundance, the Chinese believe that eating steamed fish would bring about abundance in all they want – be it money, good fortune and love from their loved ones.

YU SHENG: While this dish may not have originated from China, it is said to have traces of origins from there. It is hotly debated whether this dish that we see every Chinese New Year was created in Malaysia or Singapore, but the reason we eat it is the same. The dish is made out of a medley of ingredients, such as raw salmon slices, carrots, radish, peanuts, sesame seeds, plum sauce, flour crisps and oil. Each of the ingredients represents something,

such as prosperity, good luck, wealth, youth, and flourishing businesses.

LONGEVITY NOODLES (CHANG SOU MIAN): It isn’t hard to guess what the Chinese believe when it comes to this dish – it’s already in the name. The noodles are longer compared to normal noodles to represent long life, and it is usually served uncut. It is usually boiled and served with broth, or fried.

NIAN GAO: While the name literally means ‘Year Cake’, it’s name is a homophone for a chinese term that implies ending a year on a high note. This sticky delicacy made of glutinous rice can be steamed, or fried in flour, along with pieces of yam. The Nian Gao is a popular gift during Chinese New Year, and can be found in almost every Chinese home.

LEARNING HOW TO SAY NO

JANUARY 2017

SEXUAL HARASSMENT IS ONE OF THE MOST DETESTABLE CRIMES COMMITTED IN THE WORKPLACE

N

ot only does it cause severe distress and feelings of revulsion, disgust, anger and overall helplessness, it also discriminates and denigrates the victim, relegating them to second-class statuses in their workplace; going against the principle of equality of treatment and justice. Victims of sexual harassment often experience severe trauma, anxiety, depression and feelings of low selfesteem; and will adversely affect their morale and job performance. We met up with law consultant David Kanagaraj to talk about workplace crime and the laws surrounding it.

HOW IS SEXUAL HARASSMENT DEFINED? Sexual harassment can be described as anything that isn’t deemed acceptable in a public social setting, according to Kanagaraj. “Whoever intending to insult the modesty of any person, utters any word, makes any gesture or exhibits any object, intending that such words or sound

shall be heard, or that such gestures or objects shall be seen by such person as intruding upon the privacy of such person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine, or both.” According to Ashgar Ali Ali Mohammed (2006), an assistant professor at the International

Islamic University Malaysia, sexual conduct is differentiated into five groups: •

Verbal harassment such as offensive or suggestive remarks, comments, jokes, jesting, kidding, sounds and questioning, Non-verbal/gestural harassment such as

leering or ogling (to look at someone in an unpleasant way) with suggestive overtones, licking lips or holding or eating food provocatively, hand signal or sign language denoting sexual activity, and persistent flirting (to behave towards someone in a way that shows you are sexually attracted to him/her, although you do not really want a relationship with him/her); Visual harassment, for example, showing pornographic materials, drawing sex based sketches, writing sex-based letters or sexual exposure; Psychological, for example, repeated unwanted social invitations, persistent proposals for dates or physical intimacy; and Physical harassment, for example, inappropriate touching, patting, pinching, stroking, brushing up against the body, hugging, kissing, fondling or sexual assault.

Sexual behaviour can further be distinguished between two types:

SEXUAL ANNOYANCE •

Sexual conduct that is offensive, hostile or intimidating to the recipient, but has no direct link to job benefits. (Harassment by employees of the same level)

2) If the employer doesn’t investigate, then the victim has to complain to the labour department, and the labour department has another 30 days to carry out the complete investigation. If the labour department finds that there’s been sexual harassment, action can be taken against the perpetrator: dismissal without notice, downgrading or any other punishment which the employer deems just and fit. The victim will be entitled to termination benefits and balance of wages. 3) All in all, after the victim lodges a complaint, they still have to wait for at least two or three months for the investigation to be settled, and it can be hell for the victim to have to bear working with the perpetrator within that time.

SEXUAL COERCION •

Sexual conduct demanded by a superior who offers power, promotion or salary in an attempt to coerce a subordinate to grant a sexual favour. If the subordinate agrees to the solicitation, they will gain job benefits, but will gain heavy detriments should they refuse.

HOW TO FIGHT IT IN THE WORKPLACE? Kanagaraj revealed that the law has since been amended to fit the workplace, but the new amendments, work to the detriment of the victim. Now, whenever there is sexual harassment in the workplace, instead of lodging a complaint to the authorities or superiors, the victim has to follow these procedures: 1) Where there is sexual harassment, lodge a complaint to the employer, and the employer has 30 days to decide whether he wants to investigate the complaint. The employer may refuse the complaint under two circumstances: • if the complaint has previously been inquired into and no sexual harassment has been proven, or • if the employer is of the opinion that the complaint is not made in good faith.

LEAVING ON CONSTRUCTIVE DISMISSAL Alternatively, the victim may also walk out of the company on constructive dismissal. This means that the company has committed a serious breach of contract. There is an obligation in every contract, that the employer must provide a place of work that is safe and comfortable, and this applies to physical and mental safety as well. As someone who gets sexually harassed undergoes emotional and mental strife, it becomes a breach of contract.

COURT DISMISSAL CASES There have also been many cases brought to the industrial court, where either employees and employers have been dismissed for sexual harassment. Such cases include: •

In Fuchs Petrolube [M] Sdn Bhd v Chan Puck Lin @ Chan Pak Nean, a sales manager used to go to customers’ places for business. In one place, he was attracted to a married woman, and started calling her at odd hours, sending her birthday cards, and asking her out for dinner. She finally complained, and the company investigated and dismissed him, and the court ruled it to be justified.

In Melewar Corporation Sdn Bhd v Abu Osman, the HR manager was found to be sexually harassing employees, and the case was brought to court. However, the manager didn’t turn up for the hearing, and the court ruled that any action the company takes against him would be justified. He was downgraded to a lower position and he considered himself constructively dismissed. However, in Edwin Micheal Jalleh v Freescale Semiconductor Malaysia, where the Claimant, Edwin, slapped the buttocks of a factory operator. Edwin was dismissed pursuant to a domestic inquiry and he made a representation for reinstatement which was referred to the Industrial Court. The Chairman of the court, in accepting the evidence of the company and stating that it was a serious misconduct for a man to touch a woman in sensitive parts of the body, however, decided that the company should not have dismissed him because the woman at that time was fully dressed and her flesh was not violated. Pursuant to this, she awarded maximum compensation to the dismissed employee. The company had to appeal to the Court of Appeal to finally secure a judgement that whether a woman was dressed or not does not change the seriousness of the offence and that in this case the Industrial Court decision was perverse and therefore, quashed it.

CONCLUSION One may think that these crimes will never happen to them, but there is always the slight chance. It is hence highly important for workers to know when their rights are violated, and how to deal with them in order for them to be able to counter this horrible crime if it does happen and bring justice upon those who deem themselves entitled to pleasure at the expense of others. Only then, will everyone be able to commit to their tasks with joy and happiness.

TAKING SOME WEIGHT OFF

JANUARY 2017

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS ARE NEVER COMPLETE WITHOUT A ‘LOSE WEIGHT’ ON THE LIST AND BY THE YEAR END, THAT BOX IS ALWAYS LEFT UNTICKED BECAUSE FOOD IS JUST IRRESISTIBLE. SO WE DID A LITTLE DIGGING AND WE’VE CONCLUDED THAT THE KEY TO LOSING WEIGHT IS CONSISTENCY. ALTHOUGH, THERE ARE LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF TIPS TO ACHIEVE THAT, WE CHOSE ONE THAT MIGHT PUT AN END TO THIS VICIOUS CYCLE OF NOT LOSING WEIGHT – DETOX JUICING PLAN.

S

ome of you may not have heard of detox juice but it’s been gaining popularity among health/ beauty enthusiasts and they have been consuming it as part of their effort to shed a few pounds. Detox juice is basically fresh fruits and vegetables that are blended together without additional sugar or sweetener and it works by removing toxins from your body that is one of the major causes of weight gain. In South Korea, less than 4% of the population is obese and it actively promotes the benefits of detox juice. Although many took it to the extreme by starting juice fasting, a meal-less detox juice diet for days or weeks, it is safer and a lot healthier to consume detox juice along with protein-based meals. However, due to its fresh ingredients, they are ridiculously overpriced. So, we recommend you make it in your own kitchen for daily consumption. Here are our three favourite recipes of detox juice! 34

YOUR TRAVEL CHECKLIST

JANUARY 2017

WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CAN BE A NEWBIE WHEN IT COMES TO PACKING FOR A TRIP. ASSUMING THAT YOU’RE JUST LIKE US, WAITING UNTIL THERE ARE ONLY A FEW HOURS LEFT BEFORE LEAVING THE HOUSE, YOU’RE GOING TO NEED ALL THE HELP YOU CAN GET SO THAT YOU DON’T END UP RUINING YOUR TRIP BECAUSE YOU LEFT YOUR LIFELINE AT HOME. WE’VE COMPILED A CHECKLIST OF LITTLE THINGS YOU MIGHT OVERLOOK BEFORE TAKING OFF FOR THAT MUCH NEEDED HOLIDAY.

SMALL NOTEBOOK AND PEN Sometimes you need to jot down important information or ideas that might spring out whilst sipping that lemon tea by the beach so it’s safer to bring a small post-it and a pen in your carry-on.

EARPHONES/EYE MASK The secret to a peaceful trip is a chance to be with yourself and you can’t do that with children screaming around or the sound of vehicles when you’re relaxing. I personally can’t go anywhere without earphones because music can instantly make everything feel like paradise. Do you know stores like Typo sell 2 in 1 earphones/eye mask? Get yours now.

POWER BANK Many underestimate the necessity of a power bank. In case of emergencies, you’ll be in dire need of extra juice to restart your devices. Buy a smaller one to save space in your bag and make it easier for you to carry it around. It’ll be better if it has multiple ports for sharing. The mini disposable power bank is also sold now if you need more space in your luggage for other things.

CARD GAMES The best thing to bring when you’re going for a group trip is card games. It may not be your PS4 or Xbox but its light enough to carry enough fun wherever you’re heading to. The most popular one is definitely Black Jack but even Uno and Happy Family can heat up the night alongside cans of drinks and snacks.

BOOK If you’re assuming that the whole trip will be filled with activities and you won’t get bored, then you’re in for a surprise. Your smartphones can only do so much and it’ll run out of battery much faster due to its continuous use. Plus, a good read in a good place is the perfect relaxing combo.

SLIPPERS And I’m not talking about the fancy schmancy sandals you wear to the mall. Always carry a pair of Japanese slippers in your backpack because if and when your shoes give you a hard time (think heels or if your shoes get stolen), it’s Japanese slippers to the rescue!

MULTI-PLUG ADAPTER/ INTERNATIONAL ADAPTER You’ll be flustered if you travel overseas without bringing your international adapter, as by now you should know that many countries use different electrical systems. You won’t be able to plug in your charger without it and trying to find one can be a hassle so be prepared before you get on that plane.

PASHMINA/SWEATER The airport itself is filled with air-conditioners and unlike our everyday humid weather, it is actually pretty cold. Since we’re not used to low temperature, a sweater will be your perfect shelter from freezing in the hotel room. A sweater can be a bit bulky for your liking so you can replace it with a pashmina that is easier to carry.

RAINCOAT/FOLDABLE UMBRELLA Nothing stumps your vacation faster than bad weather. The last thing you need is spending your precious time waiting out the rain instead of walking down the streets to your dream place. Even though it’s a bit of a nuisance to be travelling with an umbrella, it’s better to be safe than sorry. You can always go for a foldable umbrella or a raincoat that won’t take up too much space in your bag.

SHADES/SUNGLASSES You don’t really need much explanation here. Either look cool in it or not, a pair of sunnies is a must. Lying on the beach without a pair of sunglasses (and sunscreen!) will be disastrous unless you’re planning to nap. Wait, no, not even then. So, just bring the sunglasses please.

SANITISER As much as you’d like a place to be just like home, it never is. A small bottle of sanitiser can go a long way if a place such as the public toilet is not as hygienic as it should be.

SHOP TILL YOU DROP

JANUARY 2017

T

he new year is upon us once again (already?!) and what better way to deal with the uncertainty, errrrrr we mean JOY, of a brand new year ahead than to shop? After all, no matter what the year decides to throw at you, at least you’ll look good going through it! Still doubtful? Then read on for REASONS on why you absolutely should shop at the beginning of the year (as if you really needed a reason to...).

Your parents just got their year-end bonuses Depending on what they do for a living and where they work of course, chances are that your parents’ year end bonus is still sitting in their bank accounts. Now is the time to get creative and onto their good books (if you haven’t already) to persuade them to channel some of that moolah your way.

Some of your clothes are probably wayyyyyy past their replacement dates Being guys, we tend to overlook things such as jeans that are

too faded and tattered that its not even funny any more. Admittedly, while you may be able to brush off wear and tear in jeans, you definitely can’t say the same for t-shirt collars which are out of shape. Just because this happens, doesn’t mean you should continue to let it happen! While you should be doing it more often, do it at least once a year, even if you’re not the type to shop.

Sales! Whether it’s clearance or not, if you’re not particular about your wardrobe being in season then this might actually be the best reason to shop at the beginning of the year. What’s better than being stylish on a budget?

Trendsetting With any luck, your amazing sense of style will finally sink in with the rest of your college/uni buddies and you might just end up becoming a trendsetter, even if just for a while. Why then, you may ask, should you go shopping instead of being a

trendsetter with your current wardrobe? Well, the short answer is, if it hasn’t happened by now, it probably isn’t happening… don’t be afraid to go for a new look!

You might just find it Everyone has a look which defines a particular phase in their lives, whether they realise it or not. You might be comfortable with your look now but explore what’s out there once in a while and you may be pleasantly surprised with what you find yourself comfortable in. Now, for those of you who haven’t been out into the great big world of fashion in a while, we’re giving you a glimpse into a few choice pieces from our friends at GUESS and Uniqlo .

CAR ESSENTIALS

JANUARY 2017

Eight Essentials For Your Ride! BETWEEN KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR STUDIES, SOCIAL LIFE, WORK (MAYBE?), AND SLEEP, THINGS EASILY SLIP OFF TO THE BACK OF OUR MINDS ONCE IN A WHILE AND AT TIMES, WE MAY NOT REMEMBER THESE THINGS UNTIL THE VERY LAST MINUTE (I.E. WHEN YOU’RE ALREADY ON CAMPUS). YELP! ENSURE THESE ITEMS ARE IN YOUR CAR AT ALL TIMES AND YOU’LL BE ABLE TO MASK THESE BOUTS OF SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS!

A formal jacket and formal shoes While some of you may find it hard to believe that you would be able to forget a presentation date, it does happen. Keeping a formal jacket and formal shoes in the car ensure that you’ll at least be somewhat presentable in semi-formal attire as opposed to presenting in just a T-shirt and jeans.

A razor

Emergency Cash With the many toll booths in the Klang Valley these days, have you ever wondered what would happen if you forgot to reload your Touch ‘n Go AND forgot to withdraw cash. To be honest, I’d rather avoid the hassle of finding out. How much you keep aside is up to you but do make sure to keep it out of sight lest you attract unwanted attention.

Now I know what you’re thinking: Who shaves in their car? While no one is stopping you, this is not the reason for which we recommend keeping a razor in your car. Rather, keeping one of these in your car will serve as a godsend for those mornings when you wake up a little later than you’d prefer and just HAVE to be clean shaven. Most of the time, you’ll find that a rushed shave isn’t thorough and you’ll be more than glad to be able to touch up before leaving your car.

A power bank Writing materials Perfect for those things that pop up into our heads at odd times but we just know we’re going to forget later. When it does (and your car isn’t moving!), write it down. For those of you who are saying “That’s what my phone is for” consider this: have you ever heard of anyone getting a ticket for writing in a car before?

Perfume

A hoodie From hiding the fact that you still manage to get food stains (however small they may be!) on your shirt, especially on those days when you’re wearing white, to saving you from the cold cinema halls when last minute movie plans are made, a hoodie is definitely an essential. Besides, it also serves as a good cover up for those days where you feel just a tad bit bloated.

Whether it be because of late night parties followed by early morning presentations or a tendency to wake up five minutes before you have to be somewhere, I’m pretty sure that showering on a daily basis isn’t exactly at the top of your priority list, on some days at least. However, given the judgmental environment of college (for the most part), it always helps not to let others in on this little secret of yours.

While there is a 99% chance that your car comes with a port for your car charger and/ or USB slots, you may have noticed that these can be quite slow in getting the battery on your phone up especially if its flat. Thankfully, (most) power banks will charge your device at the same speed as it would if it were plugged into a wall socket. This, by the way, is probably a better use for the larger power banks as opposed to lugging them around with you.

Breath Spray Aside from the fact that breath sprays tend to last longer than breath mints since most of us tend to eat the latter like candy, breath spray definitely comes in handy for those days when you find yourself out of the house for more than 18 hours. Besides, your friends will thank you for keeping this handy on those days where you feel like eating sardines or even durian (the latter may require the entire bottle though!).

COMMITMENTFREE

JANUARY 2017

End the year in fashion by inking without waking up regretting the whole affair. People usually opt for a tattoo as a reminder of memorable things in their life or as an extension of themselves but some don’t have that option due to religious restrictions or parents’ objections. Although we have to admit that permanent tattoos make you look cool, it’s also true that getting one involves long-term commitment and painful procedures especially if you suddenly realise that it was a mistake down the road. The solution to this is temporary tattoos that are gaining traction as substitutes for the real one. Here’s where you can get it in Malaysia.

Habitatt has worked with many big names including TOPSHOP, Sephora, MBO Cinema, Disney and many more. With countless creative designs, habitat can last more than three days and they are waterproof. All tattoos come in sets of three and best yet, you can design your own customised Habitatt to make it more personal. You can get yours now for a price as low as RM6.00! http://habitatt.com

CHOICES IN GAMING

JANUARY 2017

AVEE H LY OIC L A RE H CHS AND E WM U C M E R ? O D T GAATTE O E THA IDS IT M V IN OE D

E

very form of media ever introduced to humankind has introduced with it a new form of interaction – the printing press made the latest news accessible quickly and widely; radio allowed us to broadcast songs and messages, and the invention of television allowed us to utilise three out of our five senses, adding sight into the equation. Video games, the latest in the chain of media, have provided its users with something that has never ever been achieved by any other medium before: the feeling

of agency. It is the only medium that lets you control what happens – it allows the player to make choices; it allows the player agency. Players are often invited to exercise their agency not only during narrative, but also in the mechanics of the game as well. Gamers can choose different ways to complete their missions, invest points in different skills to grant them different powers, or simply giving one the freedom to explore the world they’ve been introduced to. This allows players to feel as if they have invested a part of themselves in the game. By doing something that they personally choose to, they are projecting a little bit of their personality into the game or the character they play with every choice they make. However, it is argued that while games do allow us to make certain decisions – it does not allow one to have true free will and immersion. There will definitely be limits imposed in the world - there will be limits to where you can go, what you can say, and what you can do – there will always be a conveniently placed pile of debris, limited conversation choices,

and you can never set out to be a villain in a game where you play a hero who is sent out to save humanity. If the developers were to go all out and write codes for every possible outcome and whim that the player might have, they will never be able to release their game. The coding process would take far too long, and it would be far too arduous to even attempt. Fortunately, it is not necessary for that much choice to be coded into the game for the player to feel agency – all that matters is that the game makes us feel that our choices do affect the game, be it through our gameplay or through the narrative. One does not need unending options to offer the player, all they need is for acknowledgement that they’ve made that choice, and that it has mattered in the grand scheme of the game. This will make all the difference; it will make the choice worth making. Some would even say that if a player has absolutely full control of whatever they want to do, the narrative would end up suffering, as the player would move so far off course from the intended story that it wouldn’t even be relevant anymore. There are even games that capitalise on the fact that players may not have that much choice in games to truly highlight that feeling of oppression and lack of choice in the game, such as during fights against opponents far stronger than you in which the player is meant to lose. It can also be used during instances where the player is trapped and at the mercy of others, such as in Portal, that purposely limits the places you can go within the Aperture Laboratories to fully elucidate how truly and undeniably trapped you are. Despite not being able to offer true agency, choice has the very real opportunity to help the player to be further immersed into the world, and draw players in using a whole new way of storytelling. But really, the only real choice we can make is ‘to play, or not to play’.

DELL INSPIRON 11 3000 2-IN-1

BENDIN’ OVER BACKWARDS

WITH INSPIRON The light and flexible laptop/tablet that’ll save your back from breaking. Design and Features With an extremely bubbly and radiant design, it is really hard to miss the Dell Inspiron 11 3000. This holds especially true when it comes to its red and blue variants. Its interior is accompanied by a black keyboard, and a black screen bezel. It can also be folded back entirely, and can act as both a notebook laptop, or a tablet. You can even use the keyboard as a stand by folding it backwards and simply using it as a proppedup tablet, or even make it stand on its edges like a photo frame. However, one problem I had with this laptop was its On/Off button. Placed on the right side of the machine, it is extremely easy to accidentally press it. This makes it extremely frustrating to move your laptop, as you’re suddenly confronted with a blank screen because you instinctively moved the laptop by grasping its right side, and pushed the off button instead.

Performance While it is highly affordable, the performance of Dell Inspiron 11 3000 is not something to sing and shout from the rooftops about. Its CPU

is a Dual-Core Intel Celeron dual-core N3050, as well as a 2GB RAM. While it may perform simple tasks such as browsing simple sites, typing documents and watching videos rather well, it begins to lag a little whenever heavier tasks are being performed, such as when too many tabs have been opened on an internet browser, or when you load up a game that requires higher performances. Its battery life lasts roughly five hours with continuous use, but will last much longer if it’s on sleep mode. Its audio scored well. It managed to broadcast its sound loud enough for it to be annoying to other people who don’t share your music tastes.

Ease of use At 1.4kg, it’s light enough to be carried around without any qualms. It’s way lighter than your average laptop, but still heavier than the average tablet. While it may be fine to work on it as a tablet for short periods of time, its weight will feel like a burden after holding it up for some time. Its keyboard is nicely spaced out despite its size, and is comfortable to type on. Its trackpad and touch screen is also rather sensitive, and will track your finger movements for most tasks.

UNCLE SOON’S FRIED RICE (LOCATED AT THE BACK OF RESTORAN FOH FOH)

KOON KEE WANTAN NOODLES Hidden inside the bustling rows of hawker shops is a quiet, homely gem of a restaurant that has stood strong since 1945. Peter Lee, the purveyor of the smooth and silky noodles, said the store originated from his father. They used to sell sugar cane before they transitioned to the store many now know and love. The noodles are springy and coated in a delicious sauce that makes it smooth, silky and savoury. Noodles are served with char siew and/or shredded chicken in thick mushroom sauce, along with a delectable bowl of soup with wantans.

Situated near the likes of Taylors and INTI, Uncle Soon’s fried rice is one of the greatest student magnets situated in SS15, Subang. Run by the extremely approachable Uncle and Aunty Soon and their daughter, the humble stall started out and operated in Langkawi for nine years before moving and settling down in Subang for another 11 years. With a secret sauce that gives the golden-brown rice its savoury and slightly sweet flavour, the fried rice is wonderfully delectable – served with a generous helping of eggs (patrons can even opt to add an extra sunny-side-up), vegetables, and optional char siew and fried eggs.

KIN KIN CHILLI PAN MEE The pioneers of the now famous chilli pan mee craze, Kin Kin started off being a simple stall set up under a tree. Having had customers visit their stall in droves, and they’ve since spread to three branches in KL (Dewan Sultan Suleiman, Publika, and Pandan Indah) and one in Singapore. The dish itself is comprised of slippery noodles, served with minced meat, fried anchovies, a runny broiled egg, and the pièce de résistance – the chilli flakes. You can add the chilli flakes to your liking or tolerance to spice. It’ll ignite your mouth with a great combination of savouriness, crunchiness and, of course, spiciness. Location: 40, Jalan Dewan Sultan Sulaiman, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Opening Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Closed on Mondays Price: RM6 per bowl

WONG AH WAH CHICKEN WINGS Around since 1973, the store is one of the most well known places for chicken wings, and is definitely the most well known in Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang. You cannot go through Jalan Alor and not go for W.A.W. Deeply coated in honey, it’s chicken wings is known for their wonderfully sticky, sweet and crispy texture. They go incredibly well with rice as well as other dishes, W.A.W.’s chicken wings is something you should not miss.

ALOR CORNER CURRY NOODLES This rather missable stall sets up at the side of the road, and only pops up at 2pm. The little stall has been around for 39 years, and was started by the stall owners’ parents. The curry noodle comes with delicious sliced eggplant, chicken meat, cockles, and tou fu pok. The curry itself is wonderfully thick, creamy and flavourful, with coconut milk. It delivers a savoury burst with every sip of the soup, and goes along with the springy noodles incredibly well. RESTORAN TELUK PULAI BAK KUT TEH A quaint little corner shop on the streets of Klang, Teluk Pulai is a homely little restaurant that looks much like a traditional coffee shop. There, one can choose between the ‘wet’ bak kut teh or the ‘dry’ one. The herbal soup in the wet version is deeply satisfying, while the dry one offers an intense flavour along with the fleshy pieces of meat. You can order oiled rice or white rice, and there are various condiments available to sprinkle over your rice. Derived from a family recipe, the owner says the shop has stood for over 30+ years, and was the first Bak Kut Teh place in the street. Location: 32, Jalan Batai Laut 5, Taman Intan, 41300 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia Opening Hours: 7 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Price: RM10 (Small), RM12 (Big), RM15 (With extra innards)

GARLIC ROASTED CHICKEN RICE

ONE ONE MEE – PAN MEE Located on the second floor, this delightful shop offers Pan Mee in all its variations – the traditional soup, curry, fried, or dry curry black sauce and chilli. Its signature dish, however, is the curry pan mee, which is delightfully spicy and the gravy satisfyingly thick. It comes flooded with curry and minced pork, giving it a great, savoury flavour that lights up your mouth both with heat and with flavour. The fried Pan Mee is also very delicious – savoury and salty noodles containing minced pork, crunchy anchovies, and a runny egg, that makes the noodles very smooth. Lastly, its soup is delightfully savoury, leaving you wanting more. Location: A, 26, Lorong Ara Kiri 2, Lucky Garden, 59100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Opening hours: 8 a.m to 4 p.m Price: RM6 (Small), RM7 (Big)

TZE NGAN CHYE SALTED ROAST DUCK An extremely small and tiny booth by the side of Petaling Street, Tze Ngan Chye is one of the many fan-favourite stalls located in the famed tourist trap. The minute you get close to their little stall, you’ll begin to smell the delightful fragrance wafting out from the little stand. The duck is extremely tasty, each bite fulfilling your taste buds with meaty duck along with the delightfully savoury skin that has been marinated and charred to a perfect degree. It also comes with two sauces – a salty one and one that’s slightly sour. Considering the lack of tables and chairs, though, this delectable fowl is strictly ‘dabao’ only. Location: 85, Jalan Petaling, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Opening Hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: RM52 for 1, RM26 for ½.

A place that is usually sold out before 2pm (thanks in part to the students of Sunway University and Monash), the garlic roasted chicken rice is affordable, while also being tantalisingly delicious. The plate of chicken (or char siew / siew yok) is served with a generous amount of savoury sauce, and is topped with pieces of fried garlic, and is served with soup, rice (oily or non oily), and chilli sauce. The crispiness of the fried garlic, paired with the salty sauce on the chicken will keep you wanting more. ESTHER:

THE STORY OF CHANGE

ONE CAN NEVER GET USED TO CHANGE AND IT’S THE REASON WHY WE STEER CLEAR OF SITUATIONS THAT CAN PUT US IN THE CENTER OF IT.

T

hough we see people stepping up to take charge when necessary, many remain static in the face of great challenge. However, can we really blame them? Change is terrifying and even more so when we could never be sure of what is at the end of the tunnel. Director Darren Yeoh took the essence of that fear and portrayed it in Actspressions latest stage production, ESTHER. The City is divided into citizens and the ‘outsider’ under the reigns of its leader, the Chairman (Mark Loo). This is similar to the battle of Harry Potter’s ‘pure blood’ and ‘mud blood’ in the Muggle world translated on stage. The life of a community worker, Esther, dedicating her life to improving her community called ‘the outsider’ was thrown off balance when her cousin, Mordecai came to visit with devastating news that led to her heavy choice of saving people or keeping her loved ones safe from harm. Mordecai discovered an assassination plot to dethrone the Chairman planned by someone in the higher management. Seeing no other way, he sought Esther’s help to infiltrate as a new bride and gain the Chairman’s trust so that the information can be safely delivered to him. ESTHER revolves around the sacrifice made by an ordinary woman who dreams of extraordinary change where everyone can be treated as equals. But to do so, she’ll risk losing everything she cares about. took the chance to bring about change that will greatly impact every party for the better. The courage to do so is admirable and even more so when the audience is able to compare it to the world we live in where the phrase ‘every man for himself’ is stubbornly engraved in everyone’s mind. Another cornerstone of the

entire plot is the Chairman’s willingness to suppress his people in exchange for his safety. Despite his loyalty, Hamman’s (Emmanuel Sobotie) prejudice against the outsiders can be seen from the start and his paranoia proved to only make things worse. It reflects the situation Malaysians are in at this very moment, as leaders are no longer seen as the pillars for the people.

ESTHER takes a jab on the quality of leadership and how personal needs trounce the unity that is much needed in a society. It did make audiences question whether they have been playing their part as members of this community. The plot is thick with a tone of seriousness but the light scripts with an infusion of humour balanced the play out. The supporting roles such as Jeho (Daniel C’hng) and Vashti (Emily Soon) were also a surprising delight as they accentuated the play further. All in all, we laughed a little and we brought home lessons a bunch. We are definitely looking forward to Actspressions future projects.

4.

There’s a rumour circling around that anime is losing its magic. We’re going to prove them wrong by showing them that anime is back bigger and better. The Anime listed below will air in the first month of 2017, including a Netflix’s original anime film! You’re not going to be disappointed. 1. Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish)

Not your typical romance anime, Kuzu no Honkai explores the darker side of love and what it could do to someone when romance turns sour. For others, Mugi Awaya and Hanabi Yasuraoka are the couple they strive to be but behind the pretend intimacy, both of them are in love with someone else. They seek each other’s comfort to ease their heart from the pain of heartbreak. Many of you will relate as to why the characters become so destructive over a feeling they can’t control. This anime will make you ponder whether love is really worth dying for. Genre: Drama, romance, school, seinen

2. ChäoS;Child

This is the one we’re most excited about. Chaos;Child is set six years after a devastating earthquake that killed thousands of people in Shibuya. A group of high-schoolers that survived the catastrophe started investigating into bizarre murders with patterns similar to serial killings that happened six years back (Chaos;Head). Equipped with their superhuman powers, these survivors must confront the tragedy hitting their city by finding the killer before the next murder occurs. They survived a natural disaster, but will they survive a serial killer? Genre: Murder mystery 60

3. Blame!

Netflix’s anime film, Blame! is a manga adaptation that will air this month. The award-winning manga follows the journey of Killy in finding the Net Terminal Genes, the key to saving humanity while battling to stay alive from cyborgs called Safeguards. Set in a world where advanced technology dominates, humans are no longer in charge of their city but Killy is determined to take back what’s lost by invading enemy territory with his powerful guns. Genre: Action, sci-fi, drama

4. All Out!!

Sports-based anime has been receiving love from fans for a very long time. The latest one in 2017 is All Out!!, carrying the pride of rugby. The anime’s beginning is similar to another popular sports anime, Kuroko no Basuke. No one would expect that a small but bold Kenji Gion would join the rugby team but he signed up anyway and together with the other teammates, they must learn to work together despite the clash of personalities so that they can reach the top. The plot is clichéd and straight-forward, thus it comes down to the character build-up to make this anime shine. Genre: School, seinen, sports

5. Chain Chronicle: Hekuseitasu no Hikari

From the acclaimed game, Chain Chronicle comes a TV series that will bring the continent of Yggdra to life. Yggdra, a land of mythical creatures is led by the Holy King but when he falls into the hands of the mysterious Black Army, peace is slowly traded with fear. When all hope seems to disappear, a young man by the name of Yuri takes charge and creates his own Volunteer army to defeat the Black King and wrest his home back. Three Chain Chronicle films will be released prior to the TV series, so don’t miss out on the preview of this anticipated anime! Genre: Action, adventure, fantasy

The Banyan Tree Under Arrest

Living In The Here And The Now

How many times have you asked your friend for the time, only to be hit back with a one-word answer: “Now.”? Well, now you can relive those frustrating memories with this newest timepiece created by Micah Davis. Unlike other conventional watches, there are no hands; short nor long, nor are there any numbers of any sort. What is there, instead, is a simple message, written on the clock face: NOW. Designed to be a reminder to enjoy life no matter how hectic our day gets, Davis laments that we should not forget to slow down, and live in the moment. While we agree with Davis, we’d still like to know the actual time when we wear a watch; but to each their own, we say. Maybe in the near future, someone will draw a map that just says ‘Here’ as a reminder to appreciate our surroundings.

People get arrested all the time for a number of reasons – theft, assault, fraud, etc. in order to rehabilitate and re-institutionalise them to rid them of their bad habit, or to keep them away from people they might harm. But Banyan trees? You don’t often hear them getting arrested. Not only are trees inanimate, they are incapable of harming anyone (unless one of their branches break and lands on you, but we all know they can’t control that). But there is one poor Banyan tree in chains in Pakistan. The story behind this absolutely futile act is similarly ridiculous. Back in the days of British occupation, there was a British officer who got so drunk he hallucinated that the tree was moving menacingly towards him. He ordered the tree to be put under arrest, and that tree has stood there, imprisoned until today, remaining a monument to the officer’s intoxication.

The Film No One Will See In A Hundred Years If anyone thinks the waiting time for the next continuation in the Marvel franchise to be long, it is nothing compared to the waiting time of this movie. Appropriately titled 100 years, the movie was made in 2015, but is only set to be released in 2115, exactly a hundred years later along with a bottle of Louis XIII wine. It is to be kept in a high-tech safe in bulletproof glass until the 18th November 2115, and no one aside from the people who created the film know what the film’s plot is. This means that nobody alive now (except maybe babies born in 2015 who make very healthy life choices), not even the director, John Malkovich, and actors themselves, are going to be able to attend its premiere. The director and its actors, however, have invitations that are meant for their descendants to attend.

LOOKING FORWARD

JANUARY 2017

What are you expecting, or hoping to see this year? 2016 has, for a lot of people, been an incredibly rough roller coaster ride, what with international and local political unrest, an outbreak of yet another mosquito-spread virus, and a little too many famous people leaving the earthly realm for comfort. So, we asked a few students at LimKokWing University what they are expecting in the following year.

MUHAMMAD ZULFADHLI ISHAK,

KUTRALESWAREAN,

B.A. (HONS) FASHION AND RETAILING

B.A. (HONS) FASHION AND RETAILING

“I’m a fashion student, so my expectation is for more young designers and more fresh graduates to be more involved in the fashion industry and fashion shows. So yeah, basically I’d like to see more involvement of young designers in the fashion industry.”

“I wanna be a successful designer, like how Gucci and Prada designers are, y’know, having their own labels out there. Yeah currently, I have my own label, but I just started. I need to work hard to come out with a very successful brand and make it known worldwide.”

ABDUL AZIZ AL MASAABI,

UMA ESWARI,

B.A. (HONS) PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION

B.A. (HONS) FASHION AND RETAILING

“In 2017, I would really love to see more peaceful nations and less war around the world. I’d like to see more understanding for different cases or humanitarian issues around the world. Also as a student I hope to do more, and better. I’d like to find more passion about my major.”

“I’m an animal lover, and we adopt stray dogs and cats. People are going to buy animals, but it would be great if people helped strays as well. Be more proactive - love and help each other. In terms of fashion, I’d like to see more technology and diversity involved in fashion.”
