One of the most wonderful things about living in a multicultural country is the fact that we get exposed to so many cultures and festivals. Deepavali or Diwali (as pronounced by the Northern Indians), is the festival of lights, a celebration of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and the triumph of good over evil. But let’s get down to the best part of the celebration - the social part! Families and friends get together for love, goodwill and generosity, for greetings, gifts and to enjoy the scrumptious feast and delectable sweets. Speaking of sweets, we realised that many people are unfamiliar with Indian sweets and savouries that are out there. Everything is either a muruku or a laddu. So, in this issue Geetha Bai decided to enlighten (pun intended) our readers with a pictorial guide on the various types of sweets. You will be an expert by the time you’re done with the list on page 56.

MGAC:

Platform for High Achievers

M

aybank Go Ahead Challenge (MGAC) is an innovative recruitment platform that Maybank came up with to upgrade existing employment initiatives. Through MGAC, candidates are exposed to real-life challenges of working with regional and global organisations that will benefit them in building their careers in the corporate world. MGAC 2016 started off with 23 Campus Levels held in 10 countries where candidates were tested on comprehension and ethical issues in decision making. Participating universities in Malaysia include Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Nottingham University Malaysia and HELP University. We spoke to three MGAC’s alumni, Richard Abagus Ocampo (RA), Syeda Fariha Preanka (SFP), and Wilson Beh Wei Chean (WB). They are now a part of the organising committee of this global challenge.

How did you find out about MGAC and what made you participate? RA: A professor of mine encouraged me to participate. Initially hesitant, I was thrilled to join after watching YouTube clips of the challenges.

44

| CAMPUS PLUS

SFP: I found out about MGAC at the UKEC-Graduan Fair in London. At that point in time, I was a Bangladeshi student studying in Imperial College London eager to start a career in ASEAN. The Maybank ambassador explained the employment opportunities for non-Malaysians and MGAC and I decided to sign up. WB: On social media. It was the inaugural MGAC in 2012 and the excitement prompted me to be a part of this challenge.

What was the hardest challenge you had to go through during the competition? RA: At the Execution Day (Final Challenge), we had to operate a food truck for an entire day and was told that there was another challenge that would hijack two of our team members. Thinking I could do both, I lost sight of the bigger objective and focused on a distraction that derailed our effort. SFP: Hours before a business presentation in front of the senior management of Maybank, the organising committee injected a virus into our laptops wiping all our work and presentation slides we had prepared.

WB: It was about working well with people who had different ideas and personalities, in an environment where time was a constraint and everyone lacked sleep. That was the toughest challenge.

How did joining MGAC help in preparing you for working life? RA: MGAC taught me the importance of courage and resilience when faced with difficult situations. Everyone was tested beyond what they would expect. Now, I no longer take challenges as a road block but as an opportunity to grow. SFP: MGAC was designed to test mental, physical and emotional aptitude aside from business acumen. Having been through the challenge, I feel I’m better equipped with Emotional Quotation qualities. WB: MGAC prepared me to be ready for unforeseen circumstances. There are always changes and one has to be in the right frame of mind to be prepared to deliver what was promised.

The boomi C f o h t u mo

Cody, also known by his stage name Coex, is one of the best Malaysian beatboxers, and has won awards not only once, but five times in Malaysia, and even once representing Asia. We managed to get in touch with the man with the incredibly rapid - firing mouth to find out a bit about the life of a human boombox.

18

| CAMPUS PLUS

C

ody started beatboxing when he was about 16 years old, after he chanced upon a video of an Australian Idol beatboxer Joel Turner. “Because I had bad internet back then, I would load the video once and watch it repeatedly everyday.” According to him, the beatboxing then wasn’t as technical, but it still blew his mind. That made him decide beatboxing was his life calling. He has dedicated himself to the art ever since; using YouTube tutorials as his instruction manual to turn his mouth into a music and beat producing machine. He describes his beatboxing style to be rather heavy, with some progression. According to him, he has started developing his style since 2010, when he felt that tutorials weren’t cutting it anymore. He decided to continue to develop his sound individually in order to break beyond the ceiling he feels his skills have reached. His style has been influenced by his growing interest in different music genres – from his interest in Dubstep and Drum and Bass from three years ago, to his fascination with Trip-Hop,

i ng oex

Liquid Drum and Bass, and even 90’s RnB now, it has all contributed to his growth as a beatboxer. He confides too that while he does not consciously bring influences from his life into his work, his experiences definitely play a part in his work. When asked about the best venue he’s ever performed at, Cody fondly recalls his performance in a rooftop bar in the tallest building in Macau for New Year’s Eve, where the venue was almost flawless. “It was roofless, it was 21 degrees and you could see the entire city of Macau lit up by fireworks. It was really beautiful.” His two ultimate goals in his career is to sing at Madison Square Garden, and to win a Grammy award, and even dreams to collaborate with Beyoncé, the Queen he holds in extremely high regard. Before he begins every performance, Cody reveals that he not only warms up his vocal cords to prepare for the bouts of throat squeezing and pushing, he also takes the time to pray a lot before he goes on.

Throughout his career, Cody has performed at numerous events, such as Sephora’s 5th anniversary, and has even opened for Wang Lee Hom and Yuna with his band DnC before. His other band, Beat Nation A-Team, concentrates more on Christian events. However, despite his affinity for bands, he revealed that most of his work is done solo. Cody’s advice to any aspiring beatboxers, or any artist for that matter, is to go out into your community of artists and make friends with the artists that share similar goals with you. “There are people I’ve met who think they’re above their fellow artists, but it’s always a case of ‘iron sharpens iron’. If you meet like-minded people, you’re only going to get better,” he said. He also offers a way to deal with creative blocks: “It’s best to have three things you’re passionate about in life, and when you’ve hit a rut in one, you can just move on to your other passions, and by the time you get back, your block will be lifted,” he added.,

Cartoon Hooligans

october 2016

Meet Malaysia’s

1st YouTuber with

B

A Million

Subscribers!

ram Lee, 28 from Sungai Petani, Kedah is (mostly) a one-man army behind YouTube channel CartoonHooligans. His subscriber base is primarily from the US, Canada, Brazil and Mexico with only 5% from Malaysia. Having studied 3D animation at the One Academy, he started focusing on the channel full time at the beginning of this year. Bram’s love for drawing ever since he was a child stemmed from watching TV and reading comic books, as there were very little entertainment options in his home town. With dreams of becoming a comic book artist and a passion for telling stories albeit not only in words, Bram won a talent search organised by Gempak for the under 18 category. He was only 15 then and the opportunity would have been to freelance for Gempak. Unfortunately, they denied him the opportunity due to his age. However, it was not long before things started looking up again. Finding himself in the Klang Valley a year later to pursue his studies, the Gempak contest was organised again and he reiterated his intention of claiming his prize once more. Reluctant as they were, they eventually gave in and his work was published for the first time in a magazine when he was in Form 5. He was guided for one and a half years by the magazine’s comic director to ensure that he met industry standards. Upon his graduation, he worked at a local studio, making TV commercials but after two and a half years, he decided to call it quits as the workload was too heavy and the creative freedom was limited. However, this was when he faced a dilemma – if he were to put his original idea online, he ran the risk of being plagiarised as he was relatively unheard of in the industry. As such, he decided to start making parody videos in order to make a name for himself.

At what point did you get the assurance that you could focus full-time on the channel? As an artiste, it is challenging to be told what to do because you tend to give your heart and soul into creating the artwork and the client or art director comes around and asks you to change it. In the end, after ten versions, they’ll go back to the first one. It happens everywhere, regardless of whether it’s a local company or a foreign one. With my channel, I am willing to adjust my content based on the feedback that I get but it still has to be something that I enjoy. There have been quite a few YouTubers who have come out to say that YouTube doesn’t actually pay much even if you are getting the views and that you need to do sponsored content to survive. Being a YouTuber yourself, what do you think of this?

I asked Google about that once and I was told that the rate at which you are paid depends on the location of your audience. So, for example, even if a YouTuber hits a million views but has an audience which is mainly from Malaysia and Singapore, they wouldn’t be getting paid much. Getting views from Asian countries don’t pay much as compared to getting views from Western countries and that is why American YouTubers tend to earn more. What has being a YouTuber taught you? Control. Even though I have creative freedom now, I still have to set limits for myself because my viewers are of various ages. I used to make dirty jokes in my videos but I toned them down these days. For the full interview, head on over to www.campusplus.com.my.

Variety Shows Domination I don’t know about you but I can’t get through a day without watching something funny to brighten up my mood. A day of watching a few variety show episodes is enough to nurse me back to health because I kid you not, they’re mostly hilarious. Here to share the happiness, I give you our pick of Korean’s best variety shows aired so far. Oh, since Running Man is a global phenomenon, we’re not going to include it in this list.

Infinity Challenge

Happy Together

2 Days 1 Night

Also led by the ‘Nation’s MC’, Infinity Challenge is considered one of the most loved shows in Korea. The format is basically an unscripted challenge-based programme. What makes it hilarious is that ridiculous tasks are given to the members and their reactions are constantly priceless. Jack Black was also a guest on this show, proving its popularity. The members are made up of Yoo Jaesuk, Park Myeongsu, Jeong Junha and Kwanghee.

Coming back with a new concept, Happy Together is a talk show that opens up conversations with celebrities based on the theme of the episode. It also includes special segments to add flavour to the show. The reasons why Happy Together is a long running show is probably due to the combination of MCs that are very experienced in steering the conversations to make it fun and the audiences are given the opportunity to know the celebrities better through it.

Even though all but one original cast member is left, replaced by lesser known members, this hit variety has stayed strong to date. The show takes the members to various places across South Korea to promote the country to its viewers. Throughout the two day trip, members are given missions to be completed to win rewards and avoid punishments. It’s been 10 years since the show premiered and if you’re in need of good vibes, 2D1N is the right fit.

Hello Counselor

Weekly Idol

New Journey to the West

With a unique concept, Hello Counselor goes about trying to solve public concerns with the help of guests and viewers. There will be three concerns picked in each episode and the highest number of votes will win prize money. You’ll find various extreme concerns that will blow your mind and surprise you.

Weekly Idol is the home for the idols and if you are in dire need to watch your idols let loose, there’s no other place like this show. Segments such as Random Play Dance that are designed to unravel their true personalities, Weekly Idol is a good medium to fall in love with your bias(?) all over again.

Original cast members of 2D1N reunited in New Journey to the West, a travel-variety show based on the Chinese novel ‘Journey to the West’. The show was recorded in China as the members backpack through Xian to complete various missions and collect dragon balls that have the ability to grant wishes.

an honest mistake

A familiar face to many Malaysians, Darren Teh of An Honest Mistake shared his thoughts on his band being signed under Universal Music Malaysia this year. There is a divided opinion among indie musicians when it comes to being signed to a major label with some for it and some against it for fear of losing their creative control. What are your thoughts on this? I think there are two kinds of musicians: those who say ‘We will only play music, stay true to our hearts, never ever sell out, and continue playing underground gigs’ and those who understand the music business. So for the ones who are true to their hearts, I think that’s great but how long do you want to be driven by passion? You would want to play gigs that would also bring you returns after all that time and money that you’ve invested. Once you understand this, then you can talk about the business aspect. There are many kinds of deals such as a distribution deal. The music labels will take your CD and place it in specific shops. There is also a 360 deal whereby in a way, they own you. You’ll be bound by a contract and the label may or may not have a say in how you create music. The latter is what most people have in mind when they think of major labels but if a band is ready then by all means, go ahead. It’s a matter of perception. Ours is a licensing deal. It means we are on their roster and considered as an artiste under Universal. We can still land gigs and do collaborations but we’ll give Universal a head’s up and see how we can work together. We are 100% in control of what we are doing with their help. So, signing to a major label is not equivalent to signing your life away. For young bands that have no material and are not as creative as they need to be, when you sign with a major label, they will give you all the materials and help they need. Looking at the situation now, most labels, at least in

Malaysia, are looking into the local industry and are planning to pump in cash and push the local music industry.

What is it about Universal that encouraged you to sign with them? The people at Universal sign bands that were really born from the music scene. Five other bands were signed around the same time as us and these were bands that have been going to gigs and have made their rounds. Besides that, the artist and repertoire person is also the manager for Bunkface – someone with on ground experience, managing a band of that level and has the credibility. Other music labels may not fully understand the ins and outs of the industry. Also, the top management really recognises the need for local music as well as the need for different bands and different genres to be signed to a label so that they have a wider target audience. An Honest Mistake itself has gone through a few changes in terms of its band members since its formation. How would this work now that you’re signed under Universal? That is why it is the band’s name that is signed under Universal, not the individual’s. We also have An Honest Mistake Records which is also signed under Universal now. This serves to protect ourselves because if anything were to happen, we could clear it among ourselves instead of going through the legalities. Seeing as you own An Honest Mistake Records, if you were to sign someone under it, would they also be signed under Universal? I should think so but I guess everything is still up for discussion.

Up to this point, most of the band’s performances have been in Asia. Now that you’re signed under Universal, will you be venturing further? I think our appearances will still be regional for now because the kind of music we play is very American. I wouldn’t want to venture to say the States, for example, because then we’d basically be a bunch of Asians from Asia playing American Music in America – which doesn’t make sense. So I’d rather do it in the Asian region.

If Universal were to ask you to explore a different sound, how would you take it? I’d say ‘let’s do it!’ The thing about the band is that it started off acoustic then we got into hard core and now we’re just very pop punk. We’re good with exploring new things because at the end of the day, it’s not so much about selling out. It’s about getting there. It’s about selling music people like. We’re still true to ourselves. What’s the duration of your current contract with Universal? We signed a 1+1 which basically means that it’s for a year with the second year up for discussion but I think we’ll definitely renew. What would you like to say to your fans? Being in Malaysia, you have to be diverse. You have to be able to move from being a solo act and craft your performances to suit a venue or an event. You have to be like a chameleon in a way. You need to tailor yourself and just do what it takes because at the end of the day, you want to make it and in order to make it, you can’t just use one method. There are many methods. Recognising that you can do many things with one talent will definitely help launch your career.

It Doesn’t Have To Make Sense | Ingrid Michaelson

Wild World

It Doesn’t Have To Make Sense is singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson’s seventh studio album and it’s good enough for us to wonder why we haven’t heard her work before (or maybe we did but didn’t know it was her?). Simply said, it’s one of those albums that manages to get deep without getting heavy. On this album, look out for ‘Light Me Up’, ‘Miss America’, ‘Another Life’, ‘Drink You Gone’, and ‘Old Days’.

This British indie pop band is back with their second studio album. As mainstream as they have become with their hit singles, Bastille remains very much a band which most of you will either hate or love with very few landing in between. Having said that, the album does have a slight feel of trying to break away, at least a little, from that mainstream vibe. In particular, check out ‘The Currents’, ‘Power’, ‘Blame’, and ‘Winter Of Our Youth’.

Glory (Deluxe Version)

| Britney Spears

The deluxe version of Brit’s new album is packed with a whopping 17 tracks and starts off rather disappointingly and doesn’t get much better as it goes along, almost like she tried just a wee bit too hard on this album – perhaps she was trying for a new sound? Well new it certainly is, but whether it was something that should have been done in the first place is highly debatable. Having said that, the album does get a little better towards the end. Aside from hit single ‘Make Me…’, salvageable tracks include ‘Love Me Down’, ‘Hard To Forget Ya’, ‘Change Your Mind (No Seas Cortes)’, and ‘Coupure Électrique’.

Brave Enough

| Lindsey Stirling

Brave Enough is American electronic musician Lindsey Stirling’s third studio album and if her name only sounds vaguely familiar, then you’ve probably come across her work on YouTube. Her music video ‘Crystallize’ was the eighth-most watched video of 2012 and her cover version of ‘Radioactive’ with Pentatonix won Response of the Year in the first YouTube Music Awards in 2013. Aside from the title track, tracks of note on this album include ‘The Arena’, ‘Something Wild’, and ‘The Phoenix’.

Captain Fantastic: Undeniably Fantastic T

Captain Fantastic is the embodiment of indie movies that were once great and are now abandoned and traded for million dollar blockbusters with exploding cars.

keeps you engaged throughout the movie. By the end of it, my emotions ran high with feelings of happiness, sadness, confusion, madness and sympathy but most importantly, I smiled at the end. It’s amazing to watch how human and raw this movie can be. It contradicts our modern way of living and many may relate to their choice to live the way they live; hunt their own food, converse with facts backing every word and fill their time with beneficial activities. Jabs against politicians and the way we are conditioned to think is corrupting and degrading the full potential we’re capable of reaching added flavour to this movie. At the bottom of it all, it really comes down to discovering the true

nature of parenting. The question of whether Ben’s insistence on raising his children away from the world is justified or not, lingers on long after the movie ends. Although almost barbaric, Ben’s way, proves to work considering how intelligent and strong his kids grew up to be but the issue of whether they’re happy is debatable by how clueless they are when it comes to social interaction. They have no idea how to make friends, which essentially is important to help them enjoy life. They celebrate Noam Chomsky’s day instead of Christmas, for heaven’s sake. That’s the whole premise of Captain Fantastic. It doesn’t take a specific stand and force audiences to agree with just one

opinion, Ben’s or his in-laws’ who disagree with his choice. Just like parenting, it’s impossible to pick a favourite in the movie because their portrayal of each character is believable. The kids are nothing short of charming and talented but so is the convincing portrayal of a strong yet vulnerable father by Viggo Mortensen. The family values are stressed in this movie and it teaches us that the path parents pave for us might not be the same one we want to walk on but it’s not necessarily the wrong one. Captain Fantastic shows the balance between life choices and reminds us to find joy in heart-shattering moments because life deserves to be celebrated.

Ba Jiao Gui (China) Literally meaning ‘Banana Ghost’ in Chinese, the Ba Jiao Gui is a female spirit that dwells within a banana tree, and can be heard wailing at night. It is believed that greedy people who want to win easy money through winning lottery tickets will have guaranteed wins if they manage to ‘set up’ a meeting between them and the Ba Jiao Gui. They do this by tying a red string to the banana tree, stabbing it with sharp needles and by tying the other end of the string to your bed. The ghost will appear at your bed at night, begging you to set it free, and will offer winning lottery numbers in return. However, if you refuse to set the ghost free after receiving the numbers, the person will meet with a horrible, horrible death. While you may be tempted with this otherworldly get-richquick scheme, you’d better beware or you may end up toast too.

Lamia (Greece) This half woman half serpent monster is said to have an insatiable appetite for children. Lamia however wasn’t always a horrific cannibalistic monster. She is said to have once been the beautiful Queen of Libya. It was her beauty that was believed to have caught the eye of Zeus, sending Hera, his wife into a jealous fury. Hera slayed all but one of Lamia’s children and cursed her so that her eyes would remain open forever-so that she would forever be haunted by the death of her children. Zeus, sympathetic towards her predicament, transformed her into her half serpentine form to allow her to exact revenge on the world. He also granted her the ability to remove her eyes from her sockets-allowing her the occasional temporary reprieve. Her grief, coupled with the envy she felt towards other mothers led her to prey on children by either eating them or sucking on their blood. Just like the modern day Boogeyman, mothers and nannies alike would often use the story of Lamia to frighten children into good behaviour.

nishi naak (bengal) la liorona (mexico) The Nishi Daak (which means Call of the Night Spirit in Bengali), is a spirit that only strikes at night, hence the name. When you least expect it, the Nishi (Night Spirit) would call out your name using the voice of a person dear to you. If the victim happens to turn and answer the voice, they will be hypnotised, and will follow the voice to wherever it leads them, leaving no trace or clue and never to be seen again. However, they are only known to call out to the person a maximum of two times. Some tantrics (followers of an ancient Indian tradition of beliefs and meditation) are even said to nurture and control the Nishi in order to exact revenge. So the next time you go to Bengal, don’t be offended if someone ignores you when you call them less than two times, even though you are completely sure they heard you.

Known as the Weeping Woman in Spanish culture, this skeletal wailing spirit with rippling black hair is said to roam creeks and rivers in search for children to be dragged to their watery doom. While the tale of La Llorona differs from source to source, it is said that La Llorona is simply the spirit of a mother in search of her lost children. Common legend has it that the La Llorona was once known as Maria, a simple, beautiful peasant woman. She was full of love and life, living with her wealthy husband and even bore him two children. Sadly, soon after that, her husband had a change of heart and no longer cared for Maria, deciding to leave her for another woman. Maria was devastated and flew into a terrible rage, turning against her own flesh and blood. Upon recovering from her tragic outburst, she realised that she had drowned her two children in the creek. Sick with inconsolable grief and heartache, she grew skeletal, refusing to eat or sleep, while combing the river banks in hopes of reviving her children. Alas, her mistake was irreversible - she died alone on the river banks. Now her spirit spends all of eternity in search for what she had lost.

Black shuck (england)

the sweet girl of ancol bridge (China) Back in 1817, when the city of Jakarta was still called Betawi, there lived a beautiful girl by the name of Maryam, who stayed in the pavilion of a house that belonged to an incredibly rich man in Kampung Sawah, North Jakarta. When she reached the age of 16, the rich man became enamoured with her stunning beauty, and decided to make her his concubine. Ariah refused, because she didn’t want to be the concubine of an old man. On her way, she met a man who found her similarly attractive, but she refused his advances as well. Enraged, the second man decided to capture Maryam with his thugs, raped and killed her. Afraid of others finding out about her murder, poor Ariah’s lifeless body was dumped in a rice paddy field about 44 miles from Ancol River. Since then, people have reported seeing the ghost of a woman near Ancol Bridge, and has lured many drivers into traffic accidents around that particular area. The people now refer to her as “Si Manis Jembatan Ancol” (The sweet maiden of Ancol Bridge).

The legend of Black Shuck leads us back to the Church of St Mary on the night of August 4th, 1577. It was said that it was a dark and stormy night that unleashed a darkness, thunder and lightning unlike anything that has ever been seen. People knelt in church, praying for mercy, when suddenly in their midst, appeared a great black Hell Hound. It tore through the frightened congregation with its large red demonic eyes, snarling and attacking with its menacing teeth and claws. It had dark shaggy black fur, and vanished almost as suddenly as it had appeared. The church was then struck by lightning, and it was said that a fire erupted. While the story remains unsubstantiated, town records show that two men did die at the church that night. Black Shuck is said to be often sighted on the coast, in forests or near bodies of water over East Anglia and usually bears with it a bad omen-the sign of doom. It is said that you can hear its ghoulish howls on a moonless night, out in the countrysides surrounding Cambridge.

kuchisake-onna jumbie (japan) The Kuchisake-onna, otherwise known as the “Slit-Mouthed Woman”, is one of Japan’s more chilling urban legends. According to legend, Kuchisake-onna used to be a woman who was mutilated and murdered by her husband, and returned as a malicious spirit looking for revenge. The slit-mouthed woman was rumoured to be sighted around Japan during the 1970s, causing mass hysteria and panic. The story goes that she would appear to innocent bystanders as a woman obscuring her face with a surgical mask (which is really not that uncommon, actually), or a scarf or fan. She will then ask the unfortunate victim if they thought she was pretty. If they say no, she would give the victim a smile similar to hers with a pair of scissors. If the victim says yes, they would still not be safe – she would reveal her bloody, gruesome mouth and ask “How about now?” If you say “no”, you’ll be killed on the spot. However, if you say “yes”, you’d still be in hot water – she’ll walk away, but will stalk and kill you when you get back home. The only way to escape her would be to give her an in-between answer like “so-so”, or to flip the question towards her. “Do you think I’m pretty?”, and run away while she’s confused. Or throw hard candy or fruits at her. Apparently she gets distracted by those too.

(the carribean) The Jumbie is a malevolent entity which is usually the spirit of a dead person-particularly an evil one. Dark and sinister, they lurk in dark, gloomy and spooky areas. Jumbies have no particular form. Some legends say that jumbies are headless bodies, while others say that they have heads that come without faces. They are also believed to be shape-shifters and could take the form of animals, most likely a cat. Children are therefore regularly prohibited from playing with strange animals. Jumbies are an integral part of superstition and folklore. If townsfolk heard the hooting of the “jumbie bird” which in reality is simply an owl, it meant that death was near. Jumbies are also sometime used to harm another person as they have the ability to possess humans. Such spell-casting rituals are conducted by a witchdoctor known as the Obeah man. Once a jumbie has been cast upon a person, the victim would suddenly move erratically, lose his ability of coherent speech and may even become mentally deranged.

part from being used during occasions such as weddings and festivals, beauty enthusiasts now wear them to accessorise their hands whenever they’re out. Try matching henna with nail polish and your hands will definitely steal the attention. One advice, make sure your henna design is on point. For those of you who have never used henna before, here is a quick know-how to get your engines running.

1. Wash your skin with soap and water until it’s clean. 2. Cut the tip of the henna cone according to your preferred size using a nail clipper. 3. Gently press the cone with your thumb to dispense the henna and start designing. 4. Once done, let the henna dry for at least an hour. The longer you leave it, the darker the colour. 5. Spray the henna with hairspray or gel spray and wrap your hand with gauze and leave it overnight. 6. Wash the henna with soap and put on some baby oil to make sure it stays longer. Henna usually lasts five to 12 days, depending on the quality of the henna paste. If there is excess paste in your plastic cone, you can either throw it away or keep it in the freezer for future use. As for the design, we can help you with that by providing some of the best Arabic henna designs in 2016. We hope this can inspire your own creative design. Happy Hennaing, and Happy Deepavali!

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Nude Collection The Custom Eye Enhancing Shadow and Liner (Warm Nude and Classic Nude) is slim, lightweight and travel-friendly. The sheer and shimmery nude hues is suitable for everyday use. Furthermore, the round sponge applicator provided, is actually very useful as compared to a normal eyeshadow brush. The downside of this product is that you have to use eye primer to enhance the pigmentation and to ensure it lasts longer. When you apply it on dry lids, some of it falls off and it doesn’t blend as easily. The colours are not very pigmented, especially the lighter colours. The strips are also too narrow. One of the attractive features is that it can be used as a liner when wet. Overall, we think these products are worth buying for its price. Price : RM69.85

The dual function, All-in-1 Custom Nude Palette for Face and Eyes consists of 12 perfectly coordinated nude hues that can be used individually or blended together as a bronzer, blush or highlighter. It’s a great way to save money don’t you think? It comes with a portable and lovely laced packaging, the colours available are suitable for most skin tones. The pallette comes with a mirror and brush. However, the colour is a bit too light and it has to be reapplied a couple of times to get the desired colour (use finger instead of brush). It shimmers, so it’s perfect if you’re heading for a grand event at night. Despite that, the fact that it is multifunctional, makes it convenient for users, so it’s a thumbs up from us. RM63.50

A Eight magical places that are much more than just imagination

dmit it- you’ve yearned to fall down that rabbit hole, to own a broomstick that does more than just sweep and venture up an enchanted tree with ever-changing worlds at the tips of its highest branches. You’re hungering for an adventure and it’s not the sort, skyscrapers and urban jungles can sate. Fret not, it’s perfectly possible to step into fairy-tale-like realms without having to actually abandon planet Earth or leave behind important things like your sanity.

Salt Flats of Salar de Uyuni In Bolivia, the natural wonder of Salar de Uyuni is truly an unforgettable landscape. Once part of the prehistoric lake Lago Minchin, Salar de Uyuni was formed by the scorching Andean sun which evaporated the lake leaving behind a thick layer of salt. Its mirror-like surface gives a magical illusion of walking on clouds.

COLMAR TOWN Stepping into this old north-eastern town in France is like taking a trip back in time to the early Renaissance period. As you walk down the cobblestone streets lined with vivid medieval-like timber buildings, you half expect to see Belle singing and dancing about her “little town” while friendly villagers shout “Bonjour!”. Colmar’s vibrant and charming architectural design was also the inspiration behind Studio Ghibli’s much loved animation, Howl’s Moving Castle.

DARK HEDGES Much like its name, this popular avenue in Ireland gives off an eerie feeling like you’ve taken a wrong turn and ended up lost in a forbidden forest, home to malicious creatures found in fairy tales. The Dark Hedges is the most photographed location in Northern Ireland and has been featured in the popular TV show, Game of Thrones as King’s Road when Arya Stark fled King’s Landing dressed as a boy shortly after her father’s unjust execution.

Zhangye Danxia Landform You’re touching the picture, brows furrowed and all the while skeptical that such a sight exists on Earth- I kid you not, it does exist in China (no, that does not make it fake) at the Northern foothills of Qilian Mountains. Remember that arts and craft activity where you’d pour coloured sand into jars to form layer after layer of vibrant colours? s a college student, skincare is probably the last thing on your mind amidst your balancing act between your social life and your studies. More often than not, this means that most of you will neglect having a proper skincare routine. While you may look at it as a timeconsuming hassle at this stage of your life, abide by these five commandments and your future self will thank you 20 years from now. Remember, while you may be updated on the latest trends when it comes to fashion, style is nothing without the basics.

Use a face wash daily Washing your face with soap may seem tempting when you’re in a rush but doing this will dry up your skin and leave it damaged. Instead, look for a fragrance-free facial wash which is suitable for all skin types. Between the gel and foam versions, do experiment to see which one you prefer. Ideally, this should be done when you wake up and right before you hit the sack at the end of the day.

Don’t forget to scrub Being men, our skin is thicker than those of our female counterparts and thus tends to collect more debris throughout the course of the day. Having said that, a facial scrub should not be used on a daily basis. However, using it two to three times a week will exfoliate and soften your skin, a plus point for those of you who find yourselves having to shave several times a week.

Don’t forget the toner! As men, our skin tends to produce extra sebum. As such, we need to apply toner to get rid of all of this excess oil and prevent blackheads while tightening our pores and reducing the shine on our faces. If you’re looking to treat an acne breakout, look for one with salicylic acid.

Don’t end up screaming for eye cream Eye cream, especially for men, is definitely one of those things in your daily routine that you won’t see the need for until it’s too late. Unless you look forward to seeing those wrinkles around your eyes in the future, do remember to include this into your skincare routine. After all, the first signs of aging for men usually start at the eyes.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! While facial cleansers do remove all the dirt from your skin, it also dries it out and you definitely shouldn’t be leaving your skin in this condition. That’s right, this also applies to those of you with oily skin. For those of you going ‘Well, I shouldn’t even cleanse to begin with’, then, at this point, keep in mind that showering and washing your face with hot water has the same effect. Look out for a moisturiser with SPF to save time and your skin, especially if you tend to spend long hours outdoors. Remember, the windscreen of your car won’t protect you from the damaging rays of the sun! Look out for a water-based moisturiser if you have skin which is oily or prone to breakouts.

CULT GAMES

E M A G D E T A R R E D N U S U T A T S T OF CUL by christopher yee

OCTOBER 2016

W

e’ve all heard of the AAA titles in gaming – titles that grab headlines wherever they go, and create massive hype. However, we shouldn’t forget the small, but equally grand titles that may have skipped the majority’s radars. Here are a few of the top cult games that are totally underrated due to unfortunate circumstances.

Psychonauts (2005)

Grim Fandango (1998, Remastered in 2015) A tragic tale of over saturation of games when it was first released caused it to be largely ignored, but to those who have played Tim Schafer’s masterpiece, Grim Fandango can be said to be one of those games with an incredibly amazing story and a great Film Noir style. The game takes place in the Land of the Dead, where departed souls aim to make their way to the Land of Eternal Rest. Kind souls are given luxury rides to their destination, but the not-so-nice are left to get there on their own. Many give up, and just find jobs in the Land of the Dead instead. You play as Manny Calavera, a travel agent working in the department of death, and left to pay of his debt to the “powers that be”, and is responsible for selling travel packages. After being frustrated that no customers who can afford tickets are coming his way, he decides to snoop around and discovers a plot to deny tickets to as many souls as possible. Calavera decides to take matters into his own hands.

Another game born of the fantastically intriguing mind of Tim Schafer, Psychonauts follows the adventures of Razputin Aquato (a.k.a. Raz), a young child who ran away from his psychic-hating family who worked in the circus, as he eagerly breaks into a Summer Camp that serves as a guise for a remote US Government training facility to raise psychic soldiers known as ‘Psychonauts’ to help defeat evil-doers, wanting to join their ranks. Throughout the platform video game, you will control Raz as he invades the mental worlds of enemies and acquaintances, attempting to foil the world domination plans of the big baddie, while helping people along the way.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (2004) Based on the famous role-playing board game, “The World of Darkness” by White Wolf Publishing, Vampire: The Masquerade puts you in the shoes of a fledgling vampire, dropped almost immediately into vampiric politics the moment you were reborn. Unfortunately, the game did poorly due to it having to compete with titles like Half-Life 2, and its many technical flaws. The game allows you to dive into the incredibly deep and political world of vampires and the supernatural, with different clans of vampire fighting for different causes. Players can choose what clan they are born into, as well as who to support during the course of the game, all while trying to mask the fact that you are a creature of the night to other normal, human night dwellers.

ES American McGee’s Alice (2000)

Suikoden (1995)

A much darker and twisted re-imagining of the classic fairy tale Alice in Wonderland, the game tells the tragic story of what happened to Alice since we left her in Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There – a tragic fire that broke out in her home, leaving her the sole survivor of the Liddell family. Suffering from immense survivor’s guilt, Alice is transferred into Rutledge Asylum, and after 10 years of mental degradation, Alice is sucked back into a Wonderland (which all exists in her imagination) that has become horribly twisted, and barely recognisable. The series might be a little dark for some, but for those who would venture to try it, just let loose, have fun, and remember to remember - we’re all mad here.

Loosely based on the Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin), this classic RPG game is one that features an amazingly huge cast of playable characters (altogether 108 of them), and an excellent political narrative. Not only do each character have excellent depth and complexity, the story itself can get extremely emotional too. The player is charged with the gathering of 108 protagonists, known as the “108 Stars of Destiny”, all of whom are loosely interpreted from the source material. The game centres on strategic battles, with you controlling six-person parties, with a variety of statistics determining in-game combat ability. Battles are also differentiated into three types: Regular battles, one-on-one Duels, and large scale Massive Battles.

Beyond Good and Evil (2003) Taking place in the distant future of 2435, the mining planet of Hillys is taken under siege by aliens called the “DomZ”, who abduct beings and either drain their life force for power, or turn them into slaves. It is up to Jade, a young photojournalist who resides in an orphanage for DomZ victims, an Artificial Intelligence built into her storage unit, and her “uncle”, an anthropomorphic boar to rise up against their alien oppressors and save their home. A 3rd-person action-adventure game with puzzle solving and stealth, players will also be treated to a variety of minigames and sub-missions offered by NPCs (Non Player Characters) scattered throughout their beautiful (for their time) world.

Neffos C5

Entry-Level

Smartphone

Another model in Neffos’s shelves is Neffos C5 that will cost you over RM500 for a smartphone powered by a quad-core 64-bit processor.

Design Neffos C5’s design is quite similar to its predecessors. Neffos C5 is 144mm x 72mm and weighs 141g, which is quite light compared to Neffos C5L and Neffos C5 Max. It passed the easy-to-hold feature test and proves to be quite convenient to carry. The volume and power buttons are placed within reach on the right side of the phone. However, much like the other models, the space below the screen serves no purpose and is quite distracting. The cover is made of plastic with the exception of the silverlined border that is premium coated. Neffos played it classic by coming up with just two colours of the smartphone which are pearl grey and dark grey. The overall design is not really grand or out of the ordinary, but since this is TP-Link’s first effort in penetrating the smartphone market, we’ll let it slide.

Display and Sound This smartphone comes with a 5.0 inch HD touchscreen and 1280 x 720 IPS resolution,

54

creating a clearer and sharper display (though not fully HD) that works in your favour when watching videos or movies. As for the quality of the sound, it is adequate to catch your attention when it’s ringing in the next room and to keep your ears happy with music in the LRT ride to college.

Camera For those prioritising the camera quality, this phone is armed with an 8MP rear camera that is enhanced with the addition of auto focus and dual LED flash designed for capturing the night view whereas the frontfacing camera is 5MP with a wide-angle lens, suitable for those who can’t get enough of selfie moments. Even though they promote the ‘super camera’ with attractive features such as intelligent mode and artistic filters under their belt, the quality is just not up to par. Although it can still be used to capture pictures of notes or parking lot numbers at the mall, it is not a holiday-picture quality kind of camera.

Performance It runs of MTK MT6735 4x Cortex-A53 1.3GHz processor and uses Android 5.1 as its Operating System (OS), allowing users to switch between applications without many glitches. We find no major issues when it comes to performance. Browsing the internet can also be done quite smoothly. Memory-wise, Neffos C5 is loaded with 16GB ROM and 2GB RAM and offers a microSD card slot that can support up to 32GB memory. The battery (2200mAH) can last a day if used moderately but the charging capability is not nearly fast enough to recharge your phone when you run out of power. Neffos C5 also includes a Dual Micro SIM card function.

Serving its

purpose

Wireless and multifunctional Canon PIXMA G3000 from the new PIXMA Ink Efficient G Series hits the market and we have the scoop on how it works in reality. Design and Features

Setup

PIXMA G3000 is 445mm x 330 mm in dimensions which is a great size allowing it to be placed on your desk without conquering too much space. It works as a printer, scanner and copier. It’s made of matte black plastic polycarbonate and frankly, it looks no different from other box-shaped inkjet printers. A flatbed scanner is located on the top side with an adjustable paper tray attached to it. The slider can hold 100 sheets of paper at a time. You can find the control panel on the top right of the printer where there are five function buttons and four LED indicators placed vertically. The function buttons include the power, wireless, stop, and copy with the latter specialised for copying documents. Unlike the standard inkjet printer that uses ink cartridges stored internally, PIXMA G3000 uses highcapacity see-through refillable ink tanks placed at both sides of the front panel that allows you to see the balance of your ink. The ink tanks are covered with a plastic lid so you just have to lift the top cover, pop the lid open and refill the ink that can be bought at RM30 per bottle.

The most attractive feature of this printer is that everyone can instantly use it once the setup is completed. This cuts down the time to find the CD installer every time a new device is used. That means you can print from your smartphone, tablet or cloud printing on the spot through its WiFi feature. It’s convenient and easy-to-use, which we’ll give a big thumbs up for considering non-techy users will appreciate this feature. For the setup, you need to pair the PIXMA G3000 with the wireless router using a notebook PC and follow the instructions or you can simply connect your notebook to the printer via USB. The printer doesn’t come with an Ethernet port and there is only a single USB port at the back.

Speed and output quality Printing-wise, PIXMA G3000 can produce black and colour documents as well as 4x6 inch photos on A4-sized sheets. The documents can be printed out quite efficiently and it takes just a few seconds to complete.

Compared to black and white documents, colour documents take almost double the time. Both the scanner and copier take an average time to produce output. Overall, the functionalities of Canon PIXMA G3000 seem to be fairly similar to other multifunctional inkjet printers.

Guide to Deepavali Delicacies

I

t’s that time of year again, where good trumps evil and light trumps darkness. Besides the spiritual significance of Deepavali, it is also a time for merriment and what better way to be merry than with the company of delicious food. As feasting is compulsory, we’ve put together a guide to help you navigate through your gastronomic adventures on this auspicious day.

Palkova Traditional Indian milk sweet, basically the product of vigilantly stirring milk, sugar and ghee under a low flame. It has a soft but crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Ladoo One of the more popular ball shaped sweets made from flour, milk, sugar and spices. It has an overall sweet but spice-tinged taste, which can be attributed to clove or cardamom.

Athirasam This fried delicacy with a doughtnut-like appearance, is sweet and has a spicy edge. It is soft and crumbly on the inside, with a thin outer skin that gives it its contrasting texture.

Cardamom and nuts are also added - giving it a nutty and slightly spicy taste.

Coconut Candy They may come in various colours, but they are all made from grated coconut flesh cooked in sugar and condensed milk. This sweet has a slightly hard exterior with a chewy soft centre.

Gulab Jamun

This orange-hued desert owes its soft grainy texture to semolina, ghee and water. It normally contains raisins and cashew nuts that give a bit of a crunch.

This sweet is traditionally made from milk solids which are kneaded into balls, deep-fried and then soaked in rose water flavoured sugar syrup.

Soan Papdi

Ghee Balls

Kesari

Although they come looking like pistachio-topped cubes, this sweet is strangely reminiscent of spun sugar, thanks to its flaky crispy texture. It simply dissolves in your mouth, just like cotton candy.

These melt-in-your-mouth treats are made from mung bean flour, cardamom and sugar. Warm melted ghee is poured into the flour to hold it all together as they are kneaded into tiny balls.

Jalebi

Omapodi

These orange-coloured spirals are made from fried fermented batter, that are dunked into a thick sugar syrup. The crispy sugary coating on the outside compliments the soft tangy centre.

You may have known this addictive deep-fried snack as muruku, but now you know that this string-like golden brown snack is actually omapodi.

Murukku This crunchy, savoury snack is a Deepavali staple. There are many versions available including the spiral shaped, flat ribbon shaped and star shaped variants.

This traditional sweet that has a fudge-like consistency and is made from ghee, sugar, gram flour and also cardamom. They are pale yellow and often cut into squares or diamonds.

These bright orange sweets get their bright hue from grated carrots, which are cooked with ghee and sugar.

tragedi hamlet

OCTOBER 2016

ope, your eyes aren’t deceiving you! If you missed it, in which case I weep for you, KLPAC staged Shakespeare’s Hamlet entirely in our national language of Bahasa Malaysia. This, of course is no easy feat given that the original is in old English which most of us would struggle to comprehend much less translate in its entirety. Admittedly, I had my doubts before entering KLPAC’s Pentas 1 for the performance. However, I had faith in the power couple of theatre in the form of Dato’ Faridah Merican’s directorial prowess as well as the artistic magic of Joe Hasham OAM and they certainly did not disappoint. Staying true to the work of one of English literature’s finest, lines were delivered by the cast almost as if Bahasa Malaysia was their first language. Nope, the entire cast wasn’t comprised of Malay actors! Indeed, it was a proper form of the language which hardly

58

| CAMPUS PLUS

any of us speak today. Subtitles were, of course, displayed for the benefit of those who do not speak Bahasa Malaysia. Clocking at two and a half hours, the play kept my eyes glued to the stage from the beginning to the end. While the entire cast performed amazingly well, a few actors deserved specific mention for their outstanding performances. Ali Alasri, who plays the title character, embodies Hamlet well and his scenes of madness were to the point where you could actually empathise with his plight. The bond between Laertes (Arief Hamizan) and Ophelia undoubtedly shone through and those who don’t enquire further may actually believe that they are in fact siblings in real life. Credit also goes to Tria Aziz who plays Queen Gertrude, mother to Hamlet, for her captivating performance as a mother baffled by her son’s seemingly unexplainable behaviour.

After experiencing this piece of theatrical excellence, one can only hope that KLPAC continues to produce more plays like this, exposing the magic of Shakespeare to those whose English may not be their strongest point. A few weeks before the play premiered, we caught up with KLPAC’s regular actor/law student 23-year-old Arief Hamizan who plays Laertes in this adaptation of Hamlet and has been in theatre since 2012.

What are the challenges you face working in theatre? There is always this obstacle where people question whether or not theatre is relevant. It’s always a matter of telling them that it’s not whether it’s relevant. It has to be relevant. We live in a very individualised world where people live in their own compartments and having a space

where you get to interact with others, that’s what separates theatre from the movies: the two-way communication with the audience. For me, this is the advantage that theatre has over movies. It is hard because the Malaysian theatre culture hasn’t sunk in as much as it has in the west.

What are the most controversial scenes you’ve done in theatre? Something that I thought was controversial, is when I played Romeo in Shakespeare’s R&J, a few months ago in KLPAC and it was an all-male cast featuring four school boys who found a copy of Romeo and Juliet and acted the tale out. There were a lot of kissing scenes with Juliet, who was played by a man, but the response for that was really positive. On campus, we staged a play where it was completely original and the cast wrote their own stories based on their own life experience. From there, we got to hear them talk about their doubts with religion and stuff like that. I think it’s only controversial because it’s true and people feel that these things shouldn’t be said because they’re afraid to expose them. I don’t think that people necessarily want us to stop making these plays. It’s just a bit frightening to watch because you might see yourself somewhere in there.

From what you’ve seen, do you think it’s possible to survive as a stage actor in Malaysia without having a day job? I don’t think so. Theatre is so relevant, but it shows what we value as a society. I believe that if you want to make money, you will find a job that will never change anything but if you want to change something, you will have to compromise yourself in terms of how much money you can make and how comfortable your life is. Anything that challenges the status quo will be a disadvantage. That’s a reality that actors face, especially in Malaysia, because of how under developed the theatre scene is.

How would you advise those who are torn between following the traditional notion of having to earn a living and yet are still drawn to their artistic side? I think it’s a spectrum. Some people need theatre more than others. Some people can have a day job and then they use theatre as a way to relax, release, mingle with others, and really enjoy the community feel of it. They act in a production

maybe every year or so, just to touch base and that’s completely fine. Then there are those who really rely on theatre for their expressive output. I think it’s a matter of knowing what you want in your life. I may be young but those are the thoughts which are on my mind at this point in my life: do I want to make money or do I really need an outlet for expression. It’s finding where you lie on the spectrum that will help you decide what to work as and how much time you devote to theatre.

It’s that time of the year again when red is our favourite colour and ‘boo!’ is our favourite word. If plans are not made and you’re stuck at home alone with a costume, put it on and watch the anime on this list. Are these a trick or a treat? Muahahaha!! 1. Hell Girl (Jigoku Shoujo)

2. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

Before Death Note, there is Hell Girl. This is a classic horror anime that will continue to make your hair stand for years to come. We fall in love with Hell Girl, Enma Ai because she’s strangely relatable in so many ways despite being the one responsible for deaths of many. Not forgetting her sidekicks; Wanduyo, Ren Ichimoku and Hone Onna, that makes evil looks charming. With a similar concept to Death Note, Hell Girl is a service that allows people to take revenge by sending their enemy to hell through a website, and believe me there are so many weird reasons that pushed people to do just that.

Originally a video game, Corpse Party was adapted into one scary and creepy anime. A goodbye party for a school friend ended up being a permanent farewell for some when nine high school students decided to perform a charm ritual to ensure everlasting friendship that leads to them being transported to an alternate dimension where the school is haunted by murdered children. In order to escape the place, they must figure out the mystery behind the killings.

4. Deadman Wonderland

You’re a true horror fan if you can get through a single episode of Another without closing your eyes or screaming. The brutal deaths in Another are enough to make you paranoid of everything that can possibly kill you. Following the class of 3-3 of Yomiyama North, Another mainly focuses on Kouici and Mei when both are starting to discover a weird phenomenon that is haunting and killing the students. Fair warning, this is a total bloodfest.

Deadman Wonderland has a unique plot that can pull audiences into a new world. Ganta Igarasahi was one of the survivors of the massive earthquake that destroyed and sank most of Tokyo into the ocean. Not remembering the incident, Ganta lives a normal life until one day, a ‘Red Men’ came and massacred his entire class, leaving Ganta as the main suspect. Thrown into a prison amusement park, Ganta needs to survive the brutal life in prison while trying to clear his name.

Tree’s Company

The Land Of Croaking In Croatia

One vacation spot that many never knew they needed, Froggyland features a display of 507 stuffed frogs, meticulously arranged upon extremely detailed miniature furniture. Situated in Split, Croatia, the curious museum is one that draws children and adults alike to check out the interesting displays. Featuring frogs playing tennis, sewing, attending class, and even doing incredible acrobatics, these amphibious creatures reflect the life of 1920s human beings in perfect detail, displaying not only a perfect specimen of frog taxidermy, but also an idea of what life was like back in that time period. The work of taxidermist Ferenc Mere between the periods of 1910-1920, the frogs are stuffed through the mouth, so that there are absolutely no incisions upon the body of the little critter.

Have you ever wanted a cool treehouse like the one in the Tarzan series? Built in 1990 by Jose Luis for his children after being inspired by the movie Tarzan, it is built into the bark of a 300-year-old Ceiba tree in the Galapagos, and is a magnificent piece of architecture. It’s 50 feet high, and it even has a basement that brings you ten feet underground, and even has a layer of protection so that it wouldn’t cave in even if anything were to fall. Its interior is also incredibly beautiful – it comes with a bar decorated with beer bottles, a full kitchen, and even a bathroom with running water. The place is built using tonnes of recycled materials – such as discarded bottles as walls and lamps, truck tyres as swings, bent spoons as handles, and Coca Cola plastic carriers as walkways. Luis feels that this is his way of contributing to the conservation of the environment. Good news for anyone who’s interested in the idea of seeing the place - visitors can pay $1.50 to visit the complex, and can even stay the night for $25!

A Literal Beer Run

| CAMPUS PLUS

Who says professional athleticism isn’t compatible with alcohol? There is a sporting event called the Beer Run, in which runners have come together to chug beer and then run for a mile in their wibbly, wobbly drunken state. The drunken racing tradition started out as a frat tradition in 1990 in Canada between a group of friends that thought it would be fun to race each other after a few bouts of beers. Since then, the sport has evolved into a major sporting event – complete with sponsors and even extensive media coverage. Contestants have to consume at least four beers between multiple 400-meter laps that make up the famous Beer Mile. Contestants must chug the beers within a ‘transition area’ before starting to run again. However, should a person fail to hold down their beer and spills it out their front, they’ll have to do an extra penalty lap at the end of the race. This year’s winner is Canada’s Corey Bellemore, who “Just tried to chug the beers as quick as (he) could, hold them down, get the burps out”. His time, which is now a world record, is 4:34 minutes.

DIFFERENTIAL DIFFERENCES

OCTOBER 2016

What makes you feel alienated and different?

College is, for most of us, the best years of our lives. Having said that, no matter how well we may seem to blend in, there will be some things which makes us feel alienated and different from others – in college and even in life in general. This month, we speak to the students of First City University College on what makes them feel alienated and different.

Lee Man Jim, 20

Wandy Halim, 19,

“I grew up as the son of an army officer and I myself spent a little time at military school. People like me were taught differently from those who underwent conventional forms of education. The thing that strikes me the most is that we don’t say no to challenges and when it comes to difficult situations, which we all eventually face, it’s more of whether or not you want to do it as opposed to whether or not you can do it.”

“Well I’m from Indonesia and there are quite a few things which makes me feel different here. First, there’s the language. Granted, Bahasa Indonesia isn’t very different from Bahasa Malaysia but I tend to speak my native language on impulse when I go to restaurants and they don’t understand me. Also, most of those whom I socialise with here are Chinese and they tend to speak in Chinese when we hang out.”

Valerie Yabloskii, 20

Anusha N., 21

“I am an artist and I’m unique. All artists have different thoughts and different life experiences. For me, it is these thoughts and life experiences of mine which makes me feel different from everyone else, the little things.”

“When I’m among friends or even those who are new to me, I tend to get overly friendly. I’m a very friendly person and I make new friends easily which is good but at the same time may make others feel weird.”
