Every day around the world, animals are fighting for their lives. They are enslaved, beaten, caged and chained for the benefit of the humans. These animals are kept in small cages and mutilated so that we can kill and eat them. They are poisoned, blinded and cut up alive in the name of “science”; they are skinned alive so that people can parade around in their coats and god knows what else.

It’s heart breaking and infuriating to see how some of these animals suffer at the hands of the human. It’s even more so when we realise that the everyday choices we make—such as what we eat for lunch and the kind of body wash we buy, may be directly supporting some of these abuses. As difficult as it may be, we can’t stop these animals from suffering if we look the other way, ignore or pretend it isn’t happening. It is happening and we are part of this vicious cycle! Our animal issue this month is dedicated to our animal friends and we do hope we are able to shed some light in how you can make a difference too.

Two Chefs Collide at INTI’s Culinary Journey Workshop INTI School of Hospitality organised a special day dedicated to introducing the beauty of culinary through a collaborated workshop with Chef Chris Koetke, the Vice President of a well renowned culinary school in America, Kendall College School of Culinary Arts. Hosted by INTI’s very own Executive Chef, Chef Eliezer Campuzano, both chefs worked hand in hand to prepare dishes from their respective native countries, centered around the theme “World on Plates’. They strongly emphasised on the unique history of each signature dish and how the ingredients transcended borders and cultures around the globe. Guests were educated on the different interpretation of ingredients across different cultures and locations. To translate this idea, they did a demonstration by preparing the same dishes using different ingredients - siakap and shrimp, with their respective culinary traditions. Born and raised in the city of Mexico, Chef Eli put together his country’s famous taco with a delicious twist in his Siakap al Pastor as well as Camarones al Ajillo for the shrimp. On the other hand, the native American, Chef Chris made traditional regional dishes; planked siakap from the Northwest and shrimp and grits from the Carolina coast. The successful workshop was organised as a part of INTI’s effort to expose their students to global and current demands that is constantly changing.

Shakin’ It Up at KDU In a bid to prepare students to combat the ever-present global threat of earthquakes, KDU devised a competition to design structures that can withstand tremors. The seven hour STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) competition encouraged students to not only make use of their fundamental engineering knowledge, but to also think creatively of designs that will be able to withstand the simulated earthquake. Using limited materials set by the organisers, the participating groups were able to come up with model structures of 60 x 35 x 35 cm with an alarm system assembled using electronic devices in the middle, which were then tested with simulated tremors along two directions. Team 1, consisting of Low Yi En, Calvin Soo Shui Zhen, and Francis Kasaila, won the Aesthetic Design Award. Other awards went to Team 2 (Haran A/L Murali, Muhamad Fadhl Bin Masri-Engineering Design Award), Team 3 (Tan Khai Jern, Darshan A/L Ramesan, Pravin A/L Rajendran-Creative Solution Award), and Team 5 (Thanesh A/L Gunaselan, Mehervan Singh, Ahmad Syahmi Naqiuddin Bin Mohamad-Project management award) 8

ANIMAL WORLD

JULY 2016

W

e long knew that there’s not much of a difference between humans and animals. In many ways, we share attributes that are quite similar such as our tendency to be affected by cultural facets. Over the years, many have scientifically debated the homogenous nature of how our cultures might be reflected in some groups of animals. Based on some findings, to a certain degree animals do interact in behaviours that can be considered cultural. How do they identify these behaviours? Easy. The cultural learning in non-human animals will comprise of observing their learning and imitation patterns. Sometimes it’s one specific individual behaviour that will spread to a bigger group upon learning them. Although nothing is solidly conclusive, these animals do show manifestations inclining to cultural behaviours.

1) Humpback whales

“Culture are those grouptypical behaviour patterns shared by members of a community that rely on socially learned and transmitted information” - Laland and Hoppitt (2003) 16

| CAMPUS PLUS

Whales are mysterious creatures roving the big blue sea and the sight of them alone is one of life’s wonder. Little do we know that these beautiful animals communicate with each other in ways that can soothe our ears. Their now-famous songs were not initially a part of their nature. They learn the songs from each other when crossing paths, making it a fine tune when they sing it aloud. Another cultural behaviour identified from humpback whales is their way of passing on hunting techniques

1 2 to each other. By watching other whales, they learn to hunt for prey by smashing their tails on the water to trap fishes.

4

2) Ants

Ants never lend, ants never borrow. That in itself is a culture, don’t you agree? Ants are social insects that are good at cooperating with other species. An ant colony usually comprises of a queen, larvae and foragers (worker ants). They have a culture of letting the foragers to be in charge of finding food sources whilst the queen and larvae stay safe in the nest. The foragers will store food in their abdomen and regurgitate some of the food for the hungry receivers. One species of ant, the black Brazilian ant, Crematogaster ampla, is known as the free rider because of their culture to adopt the culture of other ants.

3 they perform this act to both clean and add flavour from the salt water to the potatoes. This behaviour is deemed cultural because the act has been imitated through generations of macaque monkeys. Another amazing behaviour is that they often bathe together in hot springs to keep their body warm during winter.

5) Songbirds

We learnt by now that rats can be extremely sneaky and smart. One clan in particular, the black rats living in Jerusalem Pine forests takes adapting to a higher level. A paper in the journal Mammalia published findings that black rats learned to strip pine cone scales using sequential techniques in order to extract the nutritious seeds. Better yet, this technique is culturally transmitted to generations of rats by learning it from their mothers.

Contrary to popular belief, the origin of the songbird’s ability to sing is surprisingly not from birth. The culture of singing amongst birds started by imitating others and making it their own, creating collectively diversified melodies. This fascinating act is carried out as a reproductive effort to attract a potential mate. The higher the quality of the song, the higher their chance of securing a breeding territory. However, they learnt that some places are not ideal for crooning due to potential predators such as in Africa.

4) Macaque monkeys

6) Guppies

3) Black rats

Macaque monkeys are the species that triggered scientist’s curiosity to study culture in non-humans in the first place. One Japanese macaque monkey named Imo was spotted washing its meal, potatoes, in salt water before eating. Famously known as the ‘snow monkey’,

7

5

Another animal with a culture when it comes to mating behaviour is guppies or rainbow fish. Their mating culture resembles those of teenagers in which the female guppies tend to imitate each other when choosing their preferred mate, which is usually smaller in

6 size and are brighter in colour. When a female is eyeing one male, other females will start noticing the same male. Simplified, their mating preferences can spread across the population making it an interesting mating battlefield.

7) Dolphins

One of the most breathtaking and intelligent animals is undoubtedly the captivating dolphin. They countlessly amaze us with their abilities to think and act as humans do, making them a favourite among animal lovers. The evolution is apparent when they began to pick up a new way to collaborate with humans, namely the fishermen. A group of bottlenose dolphins in Laguna taught themselves to create an unspoken deal with the fishermen by directing the mullets towards them and giving a signal (head or tail slaps) for the nets to be released. In return, the mullets that escaped the nets would be the dolphin’s meal for the day.

ISACC HO

JULY 2016

Putting the ‘Ho’

in ‘Show’ An incredibly humble and friendly musician at heart, Isaac Ho is a name that many pub and bar-goers are familiar with. Now in his 22nd year, Isaac has played hundreds of gigs, his sweet and slightly husky voice gracing the likes of the Klang Valley, Penang and Pulau Redang, Terengganu to name a few.

18

| CAMPUS PLUS

I

nfluenced heavily by great artists such as Owl City, Ed Sheeran and John Mayer and drawing inspiration from his life, Isaac said his songs come from the things that happened to him, and the things that he wants. “It’s like I’m constantly whining in my songs,” he joked. “I write about this void that I feel in me, and I just stem from there.” One song that spoke especially dearly to his heart is ‘The Cat Song’, written about a cat he and his friends found while walking back from college. “We found a box, and it had the word “Help” on it. Opened it, and there was this kitten, which was as small as my fist.” However, the adorable story turned sour a year later when it died of leukaemia. In the midst of his grief, Isaac picked up his guitar and penned down the song. His love for music, ironically, stemmed from the love for another person. “I was 16 years old, and I liked a girl. Then there was this one time I walked past a music shop, and I looked at a

guitar, and I thought to myself, maybe I can try to court her with that.”, he said. “The short story is; it didn’t work out, and I embarrassed myself in front of a lot of people.” Don’t feel too bad for him, though. In a way, he’s lost a love, but gained another love – music. Despite his failed venture into romance, he began to discover and realised his love for music; not only for listening, but for playing the guitar and singing (even though he couldn’t sing back then). Drawn by the allure of curiosity, Isaac started playing publicly at the age of 18 in college gigs. He fondly remembers his first gig, which was for a Valentine’s Day event. “It wasn’t paid, it was horrible, I sang out of tune, timing was wrong, everything about the performance was bad. But I remembered it because it was the first step I took in order to get to where I want to be, and I learned a lot from that.” However, he does find it challenging to balance his time between his work as a musician

and his personal life. “On one end, you have the allure of performing; you’ll spend so much time going out there to perform and earning a bit of dough. On the other end, you’ll have to meet your parents’ expectations of getting a degree.” He described how he managed to keep an equilibrium through compromise – “You can do your best to fulfill what your parents want, but at the same time, don’t let go of whatever you want to do.” When asked if he had any advice for aspiring musicians, he listed out three golden rules: (1) Set realistic goals and expectations; and work towards those. (2) Do away with your ego, as it will definitely stop you from learning from other people. It should never be a competition between musicians, as it’s always an opportunity to learn. (3) Always be grateful with what you can do, because not everyone is able to do such things. Never turn down any opportunities you might get; almost all great artists start from rock bottom as well.

ave you ever wondered what happens to your pet after you drop them off for a loving grooming and massage session at the groomer’s, and how they come out perfectly clean, fluffy and happy? To find out the mysterious inner workings of a grooming place, we approached Edward Ong, a feline care stylist in Kitten Cottage, and Dorin Leong, a dog groomer and teacher at the Groomers Connection Academy to get an idea of the magical process of grooming, and what drives them to do it with passion every day. Can you guide me through the process of grooming a cat and a dog? Is there a difference? E: Well for cats, they’ll obviously be more skittish and nervous than dogs. So sometimes, when the cats arrive at the shop, we’ll approach things slowly and try to calm them down first, and see how they behave as well as their character. If they’re extremely skittish or aggressive, we’ll have to be gentler in our approach. After that, we’ll do the nail cutting, clean their ears, give them a shower, and dry them with a hair dryer. Other than that, we’ll make sure that the animals have enough food for the day. D: Actually, the process for cats and dogs is almost the same, it’s just that cats might sometimes be more restless than dogs, so it’s easier for dogs. But similarly, we still have to understand the dogs before we can groom them. Besides that, we facilitate adoptions and rescue animals as well. What inspired you to choose this profession, and what is the most satisfying part of the job? E: First of all, I’ve loved animals since young. As far as I can remember, my aunts and uncles taught me a lot about how to rescue dogs. So, I grew up having a lot of passion for taking care of animals. The best part would be the bond you’ll

have after the grooming session, as there’s a lot of communication involved. D: Originally, I was a beautician, but I decided to come and work as a teacher here because I love pets. I wanted to convey the correct knowledge about grooming to aspiring groomers and pet lovers. It’s great to see my students graduating and spreading love to animals everywhere. Have there been any outrageous requests from any clients before? D: I’ve had some special clients who liked their dogs to be shaped like a poodle, a heart, or sometimes even a lion. Sometimes, even a Mohawk at the back of the cat. E: I’ve had to shave the cat in certain areas to make them look like a lion or a dinosaur with spikes on their back. Any tips or tricks you’d like to share with new pet owners? D: Most of the grooming is very important, you’ll have to buy the proper tools and you’ll have to use them the proper way in order to groom the dogs, and they’ll really enjoy the grooming process. E: You must learn to love the animal for what they are – not just for their looks. Your love must come from your heart, and you must learn to love the animal for what they are. We have had many pets who were just abandoned at our doorstep; they just never came back. There’s a lot of responsibility and time, you’ll have to take their health and needs into consideration. So for any aspiring pet groomers out there who want to take up this line of work, are there any requirements? D: Yes, definitely. While there aren’t any academic requirements, you’ll need the love and the patience needed to work with animals. If you don’t have either, I don’t think this profession would suit you.

New in town, GOT7 is a whole new version of funny. Mainly due to their eccentric member, Jackson, who has been rising as one of Korea’s favourite idols in variety shows. The other members also do not fall short, humourwise. They know how to have fun when they want to.

aving recently shot to stardom, Kahouly Nicolay Sereba and Vincent Dery, or better known as Nico & Vinz, were recently in Malaysia and we spoke to them on their journey to where they are now. Despite the success that is Nico & Vinz, the journey to the top has definitely not been an easy one for them. Having started out as Envy in 2010, it was about three years before they would be well known beyond the borders of their own country. “From when we started taking it seriously from 2010 to 2013, there were so many times when I would wonder why people were not paying attention. We felt like we were knocking on doors just trying to get people to look at us and see what we’ve got in terms of our talent and our music but people were not paying attention. They were paying attention to other people and we were like “What’s going on?” and then we tried to make things happen and do shows but people weren’t picking up so it was tough,” shared Vinz. Giving up, however, was evidently never a part of their plan as this duo ploughed

through the tough times to get to where they are today. “We always believed that we had to work hard and get it. It was tiresome when we put so much of time and money into it at a time when we didn’t really have money but if we could get money, we’d put it into making music videos, investing in shows, or putting it towards the band. Admittedly, for a long time we couldn’t see any money coming back. It was tough when we had all these thoughts and potential but people just weren’t giving us the attention but then we took all of our frustrations and wrote about it, all of a sudden that song took us to Malaysia,” Vinz added. However, as with all artists who do not start out with solo careers, one has to wonder whether they eventually planned to go their separate ways. Well, we can safely say that all you Nico & Vinz fans can be rest assured that they’re definitely not thinking along those lines (or at least not yet…). “We are strong individuals and we do have our own individual expression but together, we’re stronger. That’s definitely what we’re

focusing on right now: just keeping Nico & Vinz working and rolling, making a lot of music, and we don’t see us splitting up. Not in the near future anyway but who knows, maybe we’ll do some solo projects because, we do have different interests so we’ll definitely do some things here and there. Maybe it’s not even music, maybe I’ll do something in film and he’ll do something in (stage) acting. I mean, who knows? God only knows where life takes you but the music is definitely just Nico & Vinz as a group,” added Nico. However, for those of you waiting for a full length album from them, you may have to wait just a little bit longer. “It will come but right now we’re just working on songs and one day it will be an album,” said Nico. However, having been approached by Yuna, talks are in progress for them to work with her and they have taken an interest in SonaOne, having played after him at the Electric Run, so there is definitely a lot more to come from Nico & Vinz. Overall, this is one of those albums that you probably wouldn’t listen to often but it would put a smile on the edge of your lips when you do. Besides hit single ‘Work From Home’, look out for ‘Write on Me’, ‘I Lied’, ‘Squeeze’, ‘Scared of Happy’, and ‘No Way’.

Grande’s third studio album is, in short, surprisingly good. Focusing on more mature content compared to her previous two albums, the album features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Macy Gray, and Future and is primarily pop and R&B with house and dance-pop influences. Aside from the title track of the album, tracks of note include ‘Be Alright’, ‘Side To Side’, ‘Greedy’, ‘Leave Me Lonely’, and ‘Touch It’.

Last Year Was Complicated [Deluxe Edition]

| NICK JONas

The youngest Jonas’ third studio album features Tove Lo, Ty Dolla $ign, Big Sean, and Daniella Mason. Following the release of the album’s lead single, ‘Close’, many of us were ready for this album long before it arrived. Given that he went through a break up after starting work on the album, the raw emotion behind this album is hard to miss. Aside from the hit singles, look out for ‘Champagne Problems’, ‘Good Girls’, ‘The Difference’, ‘Under You’, and ‘Unhinged’.

Upbeat, energetic, and emotional in its own right, the album was co-produced by Odell with Jim Abbiss who has worked with the likes of Kasabian, Adele, and Arctic Monkeys. Aside from the title track, look out for ‘Magnetised’, ‘Constellations’, ‘Still Getting Used to Being On My Own’, ‘Daddy’, and ‘Mystery.

After 30 years, the long-awaited reboot of this franchise is back. Having co-written a book positing that ghosts are real, Erin Gilbert’s position as a lecturer at Columbia University a few years later is short-lived when the book resurfaced. With ghosts invading Manhattan, Gilbert teams up with her co-author Abby Yates as well as nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann and subway worker Patty Tolan to save the world.

Based on the 1991 book of the same name, this movie follows Srinivasa Ramanujan. A poor mathematician from Madras who gains admittance to Cambridge University after World War I. He becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories under the guidance of his professor, G.H. Hardy. All in all, this movie speaks volumes on how immigrants were treated back then, regardless of their actual potential.

The ninth installment of the X-Men franchise is loosely anchored to a plot that is overplayed throughout the years but small elements in the movie became its saviour from the taste of failure.

What is more frustrating, the epic final battle that was built up initially fell flat with a shambolic fighting scene where we saw a pinch of greatness here and there, but it was simply not enough. Seriously, it’s not worth holding your bladder over. Furthermore, the return of Moira Mactaggert (Rose Byrne) seemed undervalued since she only functions as the passenger pigeon and Xavier’s old muse. The debate that X-Men is milking Jennifer Lawrence’s popularity might not be just a crazy talk since Mystique/Raven’s appearance has increased considerably in the last two X-Men sequels. She became the emotional glue that unites the original team as well as the fresh faces that regard her as a hero after the incident in the previous movie. Having said that, I wouldn’t dare to categorise this as a bad movie because the whole graphic productions were delivered impeccably and again, some characters rose above expectations to save the day. Quicksilver (Evan Peters) and Magneto (Micheal Fassbender) stole the show. Quicksilver once again became a fan favourite, thanks to his humourous and quirky character whereas Fassbender’s interpretation of a more human Erik (Magneto) deserved a trophy. In addition, I also have to give it to Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-Mcphee) and the newest member of X-Men cast Psylocke (Olivia Munn) for the great portrayal of their respective characters. It also pays to see younger versions of Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey before the Wolverine era, which is quite enthralling. Overall, I do not despise the movie but I feel no exhilaration and no resided feelings walking out the cinema hall like I usually do after an X-Men movie and that in itself is a testament to how bland the movie was.

THE SILENT MASSACRE

JULY 2016

outof out of but the cruelty still continues

W

e know of poaching atrocities across the sea and cry out against pet abuse gone viral but animal abuse is actually closer to home than we think. Ignoring it or not having first-hand experience in it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or that it will go away.

even get to see the light of day or breathe fresh air because they are kept in cramped and disgusting conditions from birth till their scheduled “murder”. Are freedom and the right to live, exclusive to the human race only?

Reality is… •

Every second of every day, an animal is slaughtered so that it can end up on our dinner plates. How would you like to be born into this world with an execution date already planned for you? How would you like to be shoved into overcrowded pens, artificially inseminated and separated from your child just so that the milk you produce can be sucked out by machines? How would you like to endure psychological torture and dismemberment (sometimes while you’re still alive) just so you can end up as a burger? Most animals raised for slaughter don’t

Animal food production is one of the world’s leading causes of climate changeeven more than the smoke belching transport industry and electricity generators. According to studies, if Americans chose a plant-based diet, the environmental impact would be the same as removing 46 million cars from the road. 13-20 pounds of grain fed to a cow produces 1 pound of beef. If we stopped consuming beef alone, we would be able to feed 13-20 times as many people as we do today. This shows that by consuming less meat, world hunger can be curbed.

Consuming meat ironically contributes to world hunger

The fishing industry has wreaked havoc on the world’s marine life till scientists fear the extinction of all commercially fished species within several decades. To make matters worse, 200 million pounds of “by-catch” is discarded by fishing industries every day.

Heavy fur-lined coats, edgy leather jackets, trendy snake skinned purses-they were all once innocent, breathing beings. Of course that was before we captured them, tortured them mentally and physically then brutally killed them for their hides. Sometimes, the animals are not even put down before their skin is ripped off their backs. Ignorant to the barbarity and cruelty, we purchase and wear these accessories with pride. We all know God didn’t create crocodile skin Birkins along with mankind so why don’t we take a moment to wonder where all this finery comes from?

All in the name of fashion… China is the world’s largest fur exporter and there’s no penalty for animal abuse.

The animals are handled roughly causing them to be psychologically traumatised to the point of chewing on their own limbs and throwing themselves against cage bars. Before the skinning commences, animals are yanked from their cages and violently bludgeoned or held by their tails and smacked repeatedly on the ground-they’re usually not killed by the first blow. What is worst is that some animals are still alive when their skin is ripped from their flesh. They writhe from the excruciating pain only to get stomped on the neck by annoyed workers. When the fur is finally peeled off and the flesh-bare animals are thrown dismissively into a pile of other hairless bodies, you can still see some raggedly breathing and blinking through the blood and agony for another few minutes.

Picture this: you’re stuffed in a cage, wide-eyed and terrified behind bars, the sharp smell of

chemicals sting your nose and men in white lab coats shuffle around with instruments of torture in their hands-waiting to play with you. This is a life of an animal used for cosmetic testing. They’re subjected to all sorts of cruelty. Animals have been purposely blinded, made to suffer seizures, had their skulls cut open for electrocution and force fed chemicals that cause all sorts of brain damage.

Painful tests… Caustic substances used in cosmetics are placed in the eyes of conscious rabbits to test product safety. This causes excruciating pain for the rabbit and they would often scream in pain and break their necks in attempt to escape their restraints.

It’s hard to imagine zoos and circuses as places of animal cruelty-it seems so contradictive towards its purpose of existence. Our precious memories of these places are filled with happiness, innocence and excitement but little do we know they’re actually a sinister prison for animals. Whales were not born with an inherent habit of waving their fins at us and neither do monkeys ride unicycles in the jungle. We’re so blithely unaware that these animals have endured physical punishment and mental torment their entire lives for our brief amusement of seeing an animal behave like a humans.

Malaysian zoo horror

• Orangutans are kept in prison-like conditions in the Melaka Zoo. They’re locked up all day in a tiny cage that has hardly enough room to move. Imagine being stuck in a toilet stall all day, every daywouldn’t you go insane? Shirley, a fellow orangutan inhabitant of a Malaysian zoo collects cigarette butts, thrown into her enclosure by patrons, in order to satisfy her smoking vice.

The most sadistic show on Earth Ringling Bros. Circus is anything but wonderful- it’s a mobile torture camp, especially for elephants.

Baby elephants are torn from their mothers upon birth and are forced to stand on the hard concrete ground for 23 hours a day with no rest, no respite. Trainers at Ringling rule with an iron fist, or rather bullhooks and whips. The elephants are brutally beaten for the smallest of mistakes and their cries of pain go unheard. When they’re not being trained and roughly disciplined, they’re chained or piled into boxcars for hours on end as the circus makes its way to the next stop. This is the torturous life of a show elephant. Why are they tormented so? For our brief moment of amusement under a red and white tent.

Horrified? So was I when I first found out and I was wretched with guilt for unwittingly supporting these barbaric industries. Don’t beat yourself up though, now you know and you can make small changes in your lifestyle that will go a long way for our

fellow fauna. Remember, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Go vegetarian or vegan! Let’s say “no” to meat that has been put on our plate at the expense of the suffering of another living being. Let’s say “no” to the mindless and inhumane killing so we can have that black pepper steak. If you’re sceptical or unsure about going vegetarian or vegan, there are a couple of powerful documentaries (which are now on Netflix) that will show you exactly why this is an ethical cause to commit to.

Mock meat and animal products Thank God for mock meat made out of soy protein right? They have a fishcake-like texture and taste great when cooked right. You can find all sorts of mock meat in supermarkets from

chicken to beef to prawn. Although it is not the healthiest option as it is processed, mock meat is a painless way for carnivores to take that first step into a vegetarian lifestyle.

Meatless Mondays or Pescatarianism If you feel that going vegan or vegetarian is way too big a leap, then opt for meatless Mondays or a pescatarian diet! Pescatarians do not eat any meat except seafood and this is a great stepping stone if you’re thinking of transitioning into a vegetarian lifestyle. No matter how big or small your effort, it will all add up into something substantial.

Cosmetic brands that don’t choose animal testing How do we determine if a company is cruelty free? • The finished products were not tested on animals • The ingredients were not tested on animals • The company does not test on animals when required by law (i.e. products that enter the Chinese cosmetics market)

Ladies and gentlemen, it is 2016, why are we still stripping the skin off animals for our bags and purses? Why are we skinning minks and rabbits alive for a fur coat? Vegan leathers that are cork or kelp based or made of PVC are now available almost everywhere so why doesn’t the cruelty stop? Faux fur exists and to be honest, it looks just like real fur so why are foxes being hunted for their fur? Let me tell you why, because customers dictate the market and “When the buying stops, the killing can too”. Don’t worry; you’ll still look helluva stylish in those vegan leathers and faux furs!

There are plenty of cruelty free options to choose from

You can even look out for cruelty free logos which are the Leaping Bunny, Caring consumer and CCF Rabbit. Check out our Beauty Buzz section of the magazine to see our top seven cruelty free makeup and beauty products available in Malaysia (the full list can be found online).

Help the animals who have no voice of their own by raising awareness among your friends and family. They probably don’t realise what goes on beyond their dinner plates and leather boots in slaughterhouses and farms. Social media is a powerful tool that can make a huge positive impact when used correctly so, decide to make a change today! Share videos, promote articles, write about it in your blogs or even upload a YouTube video about it. There are so many things you could do and every contribution, no matter how small, can go a long way.

he up and coming Hungarian designer, Tunde Hrivnak, is making a name in the fashion industry for her unique approach of infusing embroidery art from her beloved country in her collection. Fashion students at ESMOD Kuala Lumpur were given a chance to witness her brilliance up close when Tunde visited the well-renowned fashion design school. She shared her experiences and insights through workshop and a fashion show that displayed her latest 2016 spring-summer collection. The event was also attended by Hungarian ambassador, Mr. Attila Káli, who expressed his gratitude to Tunde and the long-term cooperation between ESMOD KL and Embassy of Hungary. The importance of up-to-date fashion education was stressed in the opening speech by The ONE Academy Group Executive Director, Tan Chin Wee. He stated that due to the fast growing textile and apparel industry, it’s crucial for students to stay updated with the trends. It was clear that Tunde’s love for her motherland inspired her to be the success that she is today. The tradition of embroidery has been protected for the last 200 years by passing it down through generations. She believes that embroidery is still in demand for the last five years and she competes with more modern brands by incorporating the same concept which includes using a few colours and focusing more on making these embroideries the attention grabber. The fashion show displayed impressive line of clothing, uses simple colour with detailed-looking embroideries, making the dress look elegant. She also explained that she wanted people to learn about Hungary’s culture through her collection as well as teaching students on these motives so that they can learn to love them. ESMOD Kuala Lumpur and The One Academy strived to educate their students through practical coaching approach and this workshop/ fashion show is one of their effort to do so. They believe that through this approach, the students will be able to adopt different cultural perspectives and have a wider view of international designs.

Exotic Animals & Where to Find Them From the Pogona to the Genet, check out these exotic animals and plan your next trip around getting to see one (or more!) of them in real life and treat the animal lover in you!

Pogona

The Pogona is commonly known as the bearded dragon due to the scales on the underside of its throat which turn black when they are stressed or sight a potential rival. Consisting a total of eight different species, they are often kept as pets or in zoos and are easier to care for compared to other exotic reptiles. Being adept climbers, they usually spend their time on branches and in bushes. They can be found throughout Australia in deserts, shrublands, and Eucalyptus woodlands.

2

Capybara

The capybara is the largest rodent in the world with the adults typically weighing between 35 to 66 kilograms. An extremely social species, they can be found in groups as large as 100 but usually live in groups of 10 to 20. Capybaras are native to South America and can be found throughout all the countries there, except for Chile. They dwell in savannahs and dense forests as well as near bodies of water.

3

Wallaby

Found in Australia in more remote, heavily timbered, or rugged areas and the island of New Guinea, they use their powerful hind legs to travel at high speeds, jump great heights, and deliver vigorous kicks to fend off potential predators. As they belong to the same family as kangaroos biologically speaking, the term wallaby is casually used to refer to those smaller than a kangaroo or wallaroo that have not been designated otherwise.

4

Fennec Fox

This small nocturnal fox can be found in the Sahara of North Africa. Commercially bred as an exotic house pet, breeders tend to separate them from their mothers (which is quite sad) in order to make them tamer and easier to handle, which in turn makes them more expensive. The fennec fox is the only species of fox aside from the domesticated silver fox which can be kept as a pet. It is also the national animal of Algeria.

5

Galago

Also known as bush babies, these creatures are small, nocturnal primates who are native to continental Africa. In South Africa, the galagos is known as ‘nagapie’ which translates into ‘little night monkey’ in Afrikaans. These creatures possess large eyes which give them good night vision as well as long tails which aid in balance. Interestingly enough, nails can be found on all of their digits except for the second toe of the hind foot which bears their grooming claw.

Pudú

Consisting of the northern pudú (from Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru) and the southern pudú (from southern Chile and south-western Argentina), they are the subspecies of the South American deer and are the world’s smallest deer with the southern pudú being slightly larger than the northern pudú. Due to its secretive nature, the behaviour of this solitary animal in the wild is mostly unknown. In the winter, the neck and shoulders of an aged pudú turns dark grey-brown.

6

Genet

7

These slender cat-like animals are indigenous to Africa with the common genet being introduced to southwestern Europe during historical times which led to its spreading to southern France and Italy. In Africa, they can be found in wooded habitats north of the Sahara and in savannah zones south of the Sahara to southern Africa. They can also be found along the coast of Arabia in Yemen and Oman. Highly agile, they have quick reflexes and exceptional climbing skills.

casual essentials

JULY 2016

! s t n a W T O

N

A

fter being forced to wear a uniform for the better part of our childhood and teen years, going to college and having the freedom to wear whatever you want (within reason) can be a blessing and a curse, unless of course your parents have blessed you with a supplementary credit card without limiting your usage of it. For those of us who were not so lucky, here’s a guide to the essential men’s basic which you need before you go purchasing the items which you want.

Plain T-Shirts Go for the essentials first i.e. white, grey, and black as these colours can be worn on their own when you’re having your lazy days or layer well for when you feel like dressing up a bit. Whether you go for a round collar or a V-neck is really up to the individual choice but do keep in mind that a V-neck looks better when layered.

When shopping around for Polo-Tees, go for solid colours as these will work well for both casual and smart casual looks. If you’re on a budget, get one in a bright colour and another in a dark one for starters. Also, unless you’re into baggy clothing, do remember to watch out for slim fit apparel. 44

| CAMPUS PLUS

Sneakers Do splurge a little here as a good pair of sneakers will last you a while and, if you get one in a discreet colour like black, hardly anyone will realise that you’re wearing the same pair almost every day. Do remember to look for sneakers at the beginning of your shopping session though, as swollen feet from walking around the mall for a few hours may result in you purchasing a pair that isn’t exactly your size!

Chinos

Sunglasses

Especially for those of us who are not morning people, a nice pair of sunglasses will also help to mask your eye bags and add that touch of individuality to your overall wardrobe. Remember, shop wisely as this particular item shouldn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg.

While the idea of wearing jeans on a daily basis can seem appealing, you wouldn’t want people to get the impression that you only own one pair of jeans. Chinos provide for a comfy replacement and you can experiment a little with colours here as well. Do note that chinos and khakis are not the same thing, as khakis tend to be made of a more heavyweight cotton fabric compared to chinos.

Jacket / Hoodie Despite our climate (or perhaps because of our climate), your classrooms and lecture halls will be quite cold and a comfortable jacket/hoodie is an absolute must have. Besides, you’re probably going to need one for those allnighters leading up to your examinations.

Denim

Speaking of jeans, don’t forget to shop for a few good pairs while you’re getting your closet essentials in order. With the many cuts and shades out there, be sure to take your time and find one that truly fits you and your style before you make up your mind. As a rule of thumb, if you have to limit the number of pairs you purchase, get a pair in blue and a pair in black.

As 19th century poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “A game is the journey, not the endgame.” Okay, maybe not those words exactly, but you get what I mean. As a gamer, you enjoy basking in the glee of discovery, of exploration within the parameters of a game. Sometimes, it doesn’t even need to be something geographical – your face will undoubtedly light up if you have discovered a part of the in-game history that was hidden, or a weird little Easter egg that you never knew existed before. Games that might interest you: Firewatch, No Man’s Sky, Monument Valley, Portal, Skyrim, etc.

The Narrator

Narratives, stories, characterisation, and events. These are the elements that define the ultimate night in front of a computer screen, and the more well-written and coherent the story of a game, the happier the player will be. Often wanting to be absorbed into the lore of the world or simply to experience a story from the perspective of the player character, they will feel a most satisfying pride swelling in their hearts as the pieces of the story begin to click together to provide a conclusion that makes us feel more connected to the in-game world than the real

one. Many times, they even wish they could forget everything just so we could experience it again. Games that might interest you: Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Portal, Gone Home, The Last of Us, Life is Strange, Broken Age, Undertale, and any Telltale game, really.

The Social Butterfly

The true extroverts of the gaming population, they are firm believers that health points are thicker than water. Social butterflies are players who enjoy the overall interactions and relationships formed in the virtual world with other players. Living for the kinship of clans, the camaraderie of guilds, or just simple friendship; they are often happier socialising within the game than actually playing the game itself. Games that might interest you: Second life, GTA V, Guild Wars 2, The Elder Scrolls online, etc.

The Escapist (The Fantasy Gamer)

If you find joy in games that whisk you away from the dreary realm of real life, and into the fantastical worlds that can only exist in one’s imaginations, you are a fantasy gamer. Embodying the philosophy that ‘gamers have many lives’, they enjoy experiencing life by stepping into as many shoes as possible. While many might deem this as mere escapism, to you it’s the experience that counts, and you’ve already experienced much more than the naysayers can say. Games that might interest you: Elder Scrolls, Vampire: The Masquerade, Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc.

The Selfexpressive

In the words of the Backstreet Boys, “I want it that way”, self-expressive are the people who enjoy games that let them personalise their experience. Players can literally go on for hours trying to tweak their player character’s face to look just right, and are extremely appreciative of games that allow them to

make their own choices that might ultimately change the endgame. Not only do players let their personalities fly in such games, many will get to learn more about themselves along the way through the choices they make in-game too. Games that might interest you: Skyrim, Minecraft, The Sims, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Black Desert Online, etc.

The Hobbyist

Dubbed by the rest of the gaming community as the ‘Casuals’, these players are those who use games as more of a time-filler when they are at the bus stop, or when they are waiting in line for a movie ticket. They enjoy being able to take their minds off the important stuff in life, and just have some mind-numbing fun in the middle of a hectic day. They may not be as interested in games that might require them to invest their time, energy and emotion and prefer instead to indulge

themselves in simple gameplay and mechanics. Games that might interest you: Angry Birds, Candy Crush, Fruit Ninja, Plants vs. Zombies, Flappy Bird (God bless its digital soul), etc. Do note that these ‘fun’ factors are not mutually exclusive, and it is very possible for one to enjoy the intricate story of Dark Souls while enjoying the scenery, music, and the challenge posed by the difficulty at the same time. Games themselves, too, are not limited to only one category, and may be able to scratch multiple gaming itches at one go.

LENOVO ANTVR

JULY 2016

JULY 2016

Of virtual reality and situational MARCH 2016

awareness Design The ANVR is a headset that clasps the phone with two flaps, the top one spring-loaded so you can be sure that your phone will not fall out. Where the headset comes in contact with your face (i.e. your forehead and cheeks), there are also cushions to make you more comfortable. The headset comes in two colours – black and white, and is glassesfriendly, so visually challenged people can use it without any qualms.

Comfort The Lenovo ANTVR comes with an adjustable strap, so it really doesn’t matter how big or small your head is, it will sit snugly on your face, and there are small cushions to make it more comfortable where it comes into contact with your face. It is, however, rather heavy when combined with a phone; so it will probably 54

| CAMPUS PLUS

feel like a fat Facehugger hugging your face and slightly sagging on your cheeks, minus the slimy feeling. But then again, aren’t all VR headsets heavy?

Ease of use While the spring-loaded clamping mechanism does a great job of holding your phone in place, it makes it that much harder to operate, as it will actively struggle against you while you try to put your phone in, not unlike a clam that is fighting to keep its pearl. It will take you at least several tries, and the flap might even snap back at you. Painfully, I might add. After you get your phone in, there will be two gaps at the sides for you to continue poking around at the phone’s screen. However, it is kind of frustrating to poke at your screen while it is still strapped to your face due to the fact that Virtual Reality works by combining

two pictures into one through separate lenses. As a result, what you see your finger poking might not be what you are actually poking. Compared to Google Cardboard headsets, which lets you select things by swivelling your head, looking at it, and pulling at a switch on the headset, Google causes much less annoyance than the ANTVR. Despite it being made specifically for Lenovo phones, the ANTVR works with other phones as well.

Immersion Combined with the Lenovo’s TheaterMax phones, you’ll be able to view 5.5” screen as if it were a huge cinema. It also works with other phones that support apps like Google Cardboard and YouTube 360° videos, allowing you to play games and watch 360° videos (duh). By tricking of your eyes, it can almost feel like you’re actually in another world. Just don’t use it while you’re stuck in a traffic jam, or all you’ll be doing is contributing to the congestion. However, the aforementioned two gaps, while allowing you to poke around at your screen, does become quite annoying as you can still see out into the real world, especially when there is light in your surroundings. It’s all good and dandy when you’re in a dark room where nothing can be seen, but when you step out into the light, the sides of your phone and the outside world can be a bit of a distraction.

catch Design 8.3mm thick and weighing 143g, the Wiko Fever is wonderfully slim and light, and fits into one’s pocket quite easily. The Wiko Fever’s design features a metal side frame and a plastic rear side that simulates the feel of leather. However, the main attraction of the Wiko Fever can only be seen when nothing else can be seen at all. Featuring a glow-in-the-dark side, you will (probably) never lose your phone in the dark ever again. While it might not always be noticeable, it can look pretty good when it is being noticed. Though, one gripe I have about the design is the bar at the bottom of the phone where other phones would put their home, back, and apps buttons. Instead of choosing to incorporate said buttons or making the screen slightly larger. As of now, there is a rather useless strip that my finger instinctively gravitates to. The Fever comes in three colours: black and gold, white and gray, and black and gray.

Performance

Display and sound

Camera

Its display is an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, with a 5.2 inch 1080x1920 pixel density. What that translates to is a pretty clear picture whenever you watch a video or a movie. Its speakers, however, are subpar at best. Its sound tends to be a bit sharp, is not very loud, and the fact that its speakers are at the rear side just makes it more muffled.

The Wiko Fever features a 13MP back camera, and has a 5MP front camera. It also comes with features such as autofocus, LED flash, touch focus, panorama, and HDR. It is able to shoot a decent picture, and even has special modes such as Sports, Professional, and DualView, which uses both the primary and front camera simultaneously.

Games and applications can be run with little to no lagging or jerkiness, while web-surfing is extremely efficient as well. Its battery can last an entire day with moderate to heavy use, but may take several hours long be fully recharged.

The camera also features several shooting prompts other than the traditional button and volume control, such as smile detection, which will snap a picture when it detects a smile, so you won’t ever need to leave someone out of the picture to act as a photographer anymore. For selfie fans, there is also a beautification option called Face Beauty, which will smoothen your face, enlarge your eyes, and narrow down your chin. It shoots 1080p HD videos at 30 fps, which is great for the documentation of your life.

Bali Trio

A

dimly, orange-lit setting greeted us, a far cry from the brightly lit fluorescent lighting of the mall it was situated in. It reminded me of the picturesque photos of Bali resorts and holiday scenes captured during the night that have often interrupted my highspeed scrolling through my Facebook feed. The ever cheery owner of the place revealed that its birth was due to her brother, a professional chef, who married a Balinese local while he was working there. They then decided to set up restaurants in Malaysia, starting with Ole-Ole Bali, and branching out to Spice and Bali. Even the pictures featured around the restaurant were some of her sisterin-law’s relatives, she proudly proclaimed. “No need to hire models to take pictures”, she guffawed heartily. We naturally ordered food that was recommended to us as first-timers of Balinese cuisine – such as the Bali Trio. Feeling adventurous, we ordered a Salmon Bakar as well, accompanied by some mojito mocktails. When the food came, we feasted like kings.

The Bali Trio, which consisted of Sayap Panggang (BBQ Chicken Wings), Cumi-Cumi Goreng (Fried Squid), and Sate Lilit (various minced meat, spices and a dash of lemon served on a stick of lemongrass), and was served with Sambal Matah, Sambal Terasi, and Tartar Sauce. The meaty meal tasted great with Balinese spices blended together. The taste became even more explosive when combined with the various condiments. I honestly did not expect this dish to be this filling. The Salmon Bakar, on the other hand, was nice and tender, and came with a crispy basket of fried potato chunks. It was also served with two kinds of sambals that came with the Bali Trio. Compared to my usual method of having salmon with Japanese soy sauce, this is certainly an interesting way to taste its meat. The feast was accompanied by two refreshing glasses of mocktails – one lemongrass, and the other, jackfruit, and a Roasted Coffee with Gula Merah. The mocktails were incredibly refreshing, especially after the spicy Balinese meal. A fine concoction of mint, lime and lemongrass/jackfruit, it washed everything down and left a cool, tangy minty feeling in my mouth. The Gula Merah in the coffee was frozen solid and used as a piece of ice, which gave it all the goodness of ice without it being watered down. For dessert, we had a plate of Pisang Bakar – slightly burnt bananas served with vanilla ice-cream, coconut shavings, and almond bits. This dish brought an all new meaning to the banana split, the fragrance of the burnt banana blended so well with the ice cream, giving it a rich new flavour, while the almond bits and coconut shavings complemented it gracefully. We left feeling extremely stuffed and satisfied, wishing we had more space in our stomachs. But alas, it was all we were able to fit. • Meals range from RM27 – RM57 (RM11 for kids’ meals) • Appetisers, sides and desserts range from RM13 – RM21 • Drinks range from RM7 – RM15

musical mahsuri review

JULY 2016

Musical Mahsuri (and other peculiar tales):

Malay legends in motion

I

If only history lessons are this captivating. Melt’ On became the venue of the latest local theatre production by Liver & Lung Productions, Musical Mahsuri (and other peculiar tales).

t’s not news that eccentric Malay legends have been told countless times and in various versions but I have not seen one quite like this. I must say, after a few experiences watching theatre of the same genre, I arrived at the venue with no expectation. To my delight, the performance was amazing. The main plot revolved around a young boy struggling to understand and accept anything else other than facts and numbers. After the loss of his mother, his sister took over the role and cared for him in between shifts at a coffee shop. The brother had a panic episode, forcing his sister to find ways to calm him down. A book of Malay legends seemed to do the trick and we were sucked into the past with the Boy (Badrish Bahadur) as the narrator. Although he mumbled some words, Badrish’s portrayal of a dishevelled introvert was engaging. With little faith in made up stories, we saw how he struggled to understand the logic 58

| CAMPUS PLUS

and values within each story. The boy’s sister (Badrika Bahadur), her boss (Nabilah Hamid) and colleague (Iz Sulaini), as well as super cranky customer (Phraveen Arikiah), transformed into different roles from four legends; Mahsuri of Langkawi, Bawang Putih, Puteri Lindungan Bulan and Pontianak. I won’t delve into the synopsis since we’re sure you have the gist of what each story is about but I can definitely tell you that the cast did the stories justice. The script was cleverly written based on the actual tales without taking straying too far from the main plots. Each story was different except for one similarity; somebody died. These Malaysian folk tales were cleverly told in the modern light which made many in the audience understand and appreciate these tales better. This musical subtly educates the audiences by touching on relatable issues such as feminism and westernisation in our society. Not only that, it also reached a

certain level of emotional depth that people could connect with. A full musical production in a small space-all I can say is hats off to them. With only five cast members in the play, each one shone through the multi-characters portrayed. Their singing voices were solid and beautiful. Even though everybody did well, my personal favourite would be Phraveen Arikiah. It was a joy watching him slay in each character he played (including Bawang Merah) with such sophistication, humour and a touch of his own personal character injected in the role. The actors who played Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah deserve a special mention for adding humour and a creative twist. One also cannot simply ignore the band behind the great music accompanying the musical. Truly a job well done! Overall, it was a double E; entertaining and educational and we can’t wait to see this production’s growth in the future.

oming back with his fourth solo exhibition named RETROSPEKTIV, Nicholas Choong who goes by the name of Nicky C displayed some of his best work over the past few years at PORT (People of Remarkable Talent) commune in June 2016. Nick C, an award-winning DJ for 17 years had never expected that he will someday make his other talent, painting, into a fulltime career. After years of being in the music scene, it is difficult to maintain the life that comes with it and he realised that it wasn’t a conducive and ideal environment for his now 11-year old son. So he started painting and selling them to friends and galleries and discovered that he could make a living out of this. Now, five years down the road, he’s making a name in the industry, thanks to his creativity and raw talent. Growing up, Nicholas credited his talent to an art teacher who taught him to paint when he was 14 years old. Although the art class only lasted a year, he continued learning through reading and observing another artist. The transition from a successful DJ to a fresh young artist must’ve been a leap of faith but Nicholas didn’t find it difficult as he was accustomed to managing his own time. As for his style when creating art, he prefers to experiment with all kinds of mediums from traditional painting to oil painting and acrylic, so that he didn’t limit himself to just one. Talking about the future of the art industry in Malaysia, he thinks that there is no shortage of art infrastructure in the country and it’s slowly advancing. We have

a lot of veteran artists and young upcoming artists in Malaysia. He added that there’s a new movement coming out; The Urban Sketching, where a group of strangers meet up to sketch and have tea, as well as live drawing sessions that’s popular among young artists.

RETROSPEKTIV RETROSPEKTIV

RETROSPEKTIV was an exhibition to display some of his best art from his studio of artwork he’s built over the years. Growing from a simple idea of showing his art pieces in a big venue, an opportunity was presented when PORT commune offered their gallery for the exhibition. The inspiration behind this exhibition was to show the audiences his years of work and how they have grown and progressed over time. RETROSPEKTIV varied from watercolours and prints to acrylic painting; each with a different story behind it. Nicholas wanted his art to be able to speak for themselves and allowed viewers to fabricate their own thoughts and perspective when looking at them.

“I didn’t plan to have a career as a painter, it happened naturally”

What’s next? next? What’s

Nicholas Choong has a lot on his plate. He is currently producing music for 3 music labels that he owns aside from writing short stories and welcoming 2 new interns under his wings. Art-wise, he is planning to at least run an exhibition every year and continue experimenting with his creativity to ensure that he is always learning. Furthermore, he also expressed his interest in collaborating with other local artists in the future.

The wonderfully impawsible

creatures of Anime Whenever an anime is mentioned, the limelight is almost always shone upon the humans, what with grand stories of their great powers, struggles and achievements. And often, the animals take a back seat. This time, let us shine some light on some of the famous non-humans of anime, and why we love them so much: be it for the aww factor, comic relief, or simply because of the unbreakable bond they share with their human counterparts. 2. Pikachu (Pokemon) 1. Tony Tony Chopper (One Piece) While looking like a plush toy and a pet, this adorable reindeer is a full-fledged member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Gaining the ability to turn into multiple forms after consuming the Devil Fruit Hito Hito no Mi, Chopper is a capable fighter, and is fiercely loyal to his crew. The chibi reindeer is also an accomplished doctor; and is the one who holds the lives of his crew in his hands.

4. Tetsuya #2 (Kuoroko no Basuke) Taken in by Kuroko, the adorable little Shiba Inu (I think, I’m not exactly sure) almost immediately attached himself to his owner, to the hearts of fans worldwide, and even managed to get Kagami, who is mortally afraid of canines, to accept him. (By pooping in a worn-out shoe that might have harmed him if he continued using them, no less). Despite being just a normal dog (which is actually quite rare in an anime, honestly), #2 is incredibly intelligent, and can tell when the team has made a good shot, often barking excitedly in support. 60

| CAMPUS PLUS

Honestly, who hasn’t heard of this adorably iconic electric rodent? Ever since its debut in the 1997 anime, Pikachu has invaded popular media in the form of plush toys, figurines, art, and even costumed dancers, and is widely considered the poster boy (or mouse) of the Pokémon franchise. Despite getting off to a rough start due to mistrust and an aversion to Pokéballs, the bond between Ash and Pikachu have grown to be one of the closest in anime history.

5. Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro) Spawning straight from the creative mind of Hayao Miyazaki himself, this mysterious guardian of the forest has become a sort of cultural phenomenon, and is widely considered the mascot of Studio Ghibli. Appearing in a multitude of mashup artworks, references, it is almost impossible to not know of this adorable, umbrella wielding creature. Which is ironic, considering the fact that only a select few can see him in the original movie. Gentle and curious, Totoro quickly makes friends with the two girls he meets, taking them on wondrous adventures, and to see their mother.

3. Akamaru (Naruto) This is one that many fans have literally grown up with. From the days of Naruto to Shippuden, Akamaru has matured from a tiny puppy that can fit in a hoodie to a large dog that can be ridden on. A ninja dog (ninken) from the Inuzuka clan of the Hidden Leaf village, Akamaru may not be a human, but still stands amongst the strongest of ninjas. With the ability to perform super-natural feats such as high speed attacks, transforming into a clone of Kiba and even combining with him to become a fearsome two-headed dog, Akamaru has become an invaluable member of Team Kurenai.

6. Kuro (Ao no Exorcist) A form of demon called Cat Sidhe, Kuro may sound menacing, but is really no more than a normal, playful and energetic cat (if you discount the fact he has horns, two tails, is really old and can grow several times its size). An old god of harvest for silk-farms, Kuro was confronted by exorcist Shiro Fujimoto as he went on a rampage in response to the destruction of his shrine. Through catnip wine and a nice talk, Shiro managed to calm the demon cat down enough to convince it to become his familiar. He currently resides in True Cross Academy as a guardian, and has become the familiar of Shiro’s son, Okumura Rin after the death of Shiro.

mythical Fantasies

juLY 2016

If you could have any mythical animal be real, what would it be and why? Whether we remember them or not, the odds are pretty big that we all had a mythical creature of choice in our heads when we were younger that we would have given anything to be real. Albeit the fact that those thoughts may be pushed to the back of our heads as we got older, we decided to stir up these memories and posed this question to students from INTI International College Subang.

“Well, I like dragons. I feel like they would give me the feeling of being in a previous century and they would be great to have fun with.”

The Signs of the Times

Stricken by Genius

In modern society, violence is something that is often looked down upon. It is barbaric, causes a lot of unnecessary pain to the receiving party, and involves a lot of recuperation after. But that isn’t to say that there hasn’t been anything good to come out of violence. Jason Padgett, a former furniture salesman from Tacoma, Washington, used to have little to no interest in academics. A self-described jock and party animal, he cheated in all his tests, has never cracked open a book, and has barely studied anything beyond pre-algebra back in school. However, after being assaulted brutally by two men outside a karaoke bar in 2002, Padgett has not only recovered, but has gained a miraculous mathematical genius. He now sees the world differently from us – in “discrete picture frames with a line connecting them, but still at real speed”, and with that came an amazing talent to draw using math. Experts call this rare phenomenon ‘Acquired Savant Syndrome’. Though, please refrain from hitting yourself or your friends over the head. Acquired Savant Syndrome is incredibly rare, and all you’ll get out of it is a splitting headache (or even a split open head) and a monumental hospital bill.

Signs, a restaurant recently opened in Toronto, Canada, is a restaurant like no other. In order to order anything here, you’ll have to sign it with your hands in the American Sign Language (ASL). But not to worry – in order to aid any first timers, the menu has instructions on how to order food using the language, and the waiters there are always more than happy to help. Patrons will not only learn a bit of the silent language, but will have fun doing so. The brainchild of Anjan Manikumar, Signs Restaurant aims to not only provide the deaf community in Canada with a chance to shine, but also aims to promote the study of ASL amongst the hearing community to promote better understanding between everyone.

The Swedish Connection When we think about the country of Sweden, the first thing that comes to mind is their cheap and stylish furniture as well as their delectable meatballs. However, have you ever wondered what else the Scandinavian country has to offer? Well, just call up a random Swede and ask them! In order to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Sweden being the first country to abolish censorship, the Swedish Tourism Board has set up a phone number, +46 771 793 336, that, when called, will connect to a random citizen in Sweden who has the corresponding app. From there, you can ask them about their country, or maybe even how to make their meatballs. Some have even connected to the Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Löfven. Granted, you will be charged the international calling fees, but learning the recipe to meatballs might just be worth it, no? | CAMPUS PLUS
