Our empire fell under their superior firepower. First it was the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the British. And for more than 400 years, they stole from the rich, the poor and the very poor. But they failed to steal our hearts and relentlessly, we fought on.

Through democracy and diplomacy, our forefathers paved the way to independence. Finally, on Aug 31, 1957, we won our independence. Fast forward to present day, the Independence Day has been reduced to a war film which the present generation resonates with. The question is how independent are we and what does it constitute? Something to ponder on.

creative things to do

AUGUST 2016

Hobbies for the liberation of the mind Hobbies are a great way of allowing your mind to explore the vast expanses of your mental capacity, to explore what traditional education tends to neglect.

A

midst the stress from concentrating on the vast expanses of finance homework or essays that need to be completed, it is important to take some time to recollect and find yourself through an activity that allows you to be reminded of the existing beauty of the world, and provide some beauty to it as well; no matter how small your contribution. Here are a few hobbies that will allow you to break down the boxes of your minds, and allow you to think out of it.

1. Visual Arts

Consist of drawing, painting, colouring, or crafts, the visual arts is what one automatically thinks of whenever someone mentions the word “art”. While it may take a while to train yourself with

16

| CAMPUS PLUS

hours of perfecting the art – be it by studying anatomy, facial structure, and architecture, finding the perfect picture through a DSLR lens; or by practicing to get a steady hand while working with clay or other raw material, it is entirely worth it at the end of the day. Despite the time it may take to finish a piece, it can be incredibly satisfying to see a blank piece of paper or separate raw materials about to transform into a work of art that carries meaning and a piece of your soul.

seem like it has been written by the poshest of aristocrats. Combine it with a poetic soul, and you’ll have flowy words with deep meanings that are worthy of being hung on the walls. Be it long, elegant cursive writings, or the thick and blocky font of Gothic calligraphy, this inexpensive lost art is not only extremely cathartic, it’ll also improve your handwriting tremendously. In addition to that, your greeting and invitation cards will truly be one-of-a-kind.

2. Calligraphy 3. Music The go-to hobby for people who enjoy both the visual arts and literature, calligraphy is the art of decorative handwriting; of making words dance in more than their meaning. With the art of calligraphy, you’ll be able to make the crassest of sentences

In addition to being a wonderful movie, The Sound of Music is one of the most beautiful phenomena a person can experience. It can bring about a tumultuous energy to the crowd; it can be melancholy; or it can even be something

that might be so peaceful that it can relax one’s mind and put them into a tranquil stupor. Being able to go one step further and create music, on the other hand, is a feeling that is extremely liberating. Despite being one of the more difficult hobbies to master because of the many musical techniques and theories you’ll have to wrap your head around, it can be incredibly liberating once you get the hang of it and start writing songs that help you speak your mind. You might even serenade someone with your newfound talent one day.

4. Acting/Performing Arts

Acting is one of the arts that has the potential to let you forget yourself; and see the world through the eyes of another. Acting isn’t just the art of going up on stage, memorising some lines and some movements; it requires one to truly be in the role of the character you are embodying. Besides that, acting trains one to be braver when it comes to public speaking, to enunciate words better, and how to project your voice more powerfully. Moreover, spontaneous improvisation will also allow one to think quicker on their feet in order to figure out what to say in the next minute. Acting trains one to be braver on stage, and by taking on a whole different personality in every role, you can explore the facets of life you would otherwise never get to experience. Who knows, you might even come out of a role with a whole new world-view.

5. Dance

Tired of letting society dictate how you should act? Break free and let loose through the art of dance! With the art of dance, you’ll be able to let

loose and groove to the music without a care in the world, and you will even be able to release the stress in your body. One can also speak through their body through a well-choreographed movement – if executed nicely, it can tell a story, or even promote an idea. And the best part? Be it flashy, modern dance, a more traditional one or a mixture of both, dancing is a great way to not only exercise by moving just about every part of the body, but look extremely good doing it as well.

6. Writing/Journaling

Pour forth your soul onto the depths of paper; and let your pen trace the maps of your mind. Writing, no matter the form, is one of the most constructive hobbies ever. With just a pen and paper (or computer), you can create worlds, write up histories and mythos, draft out the entire life of a character, bring joy or misfortune, pen poems and come up with epic sagas. (It doesn’t even have to be coherent – just look at the works of E. E. Cummings!) Even if you decide not to write fiction, journaling your everyday life and what you’ve experienced throughout the day is also a great practice. It will

greatly improve your grasp on the language you are wielding, it will help you remember the things you’ve done, the people you’ve met, and your dreams and hopes for the day. After all, a famous composer, Tuomas Holopainen, once wrote that “Paper is dead without words, ink idle without a poem; All the world dead without stories, without love and disarming beauty.”

7. Baking/Cooking

What’s better than a mere creative hobby? A creative hobby that ends up with a meal after, of course! With recipes all around that promise entire new worlds of flavours, you’ll never run out of recipes to try. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try tweaking the recipe to your taste, or even venture into different styles and cultures of cooking. Due to the wonderful marvel that is the internet, it is incredibly easy for one to get recipes of food that originated from halfway across the world, allowing chefs of today to try their hand at different kinds of cooking without even having to leave the country. Best of all, the taste buds of your friends and family can enjoy your hobby along with you, and it will definitely bring everyone closer at the end of the day.

usic has a way of bringing people together and creates magic in the midst of chaos in our life. Four creative souls with deep love for tune and melody decided to bind their passion in one unique instrumental band that is now known as Sarah Jade Quartet. Despite having a day job, Sarah Jade King (vocal & ukulele), Luxmee Sabapathy/ Lux (guitar & harmony), Nathanael Tan/Nate (violin and cello) and Balakarthik Balaravi/ BK (percussion & beatbox) didn’t shut their musical gene in a tight box. Instead, they spent their time experimenting with music to create fusions. Not restricted to one genre, Sarah Jade Quartet prefers to work with different elements when performing

and that is what sets them apart from other local bands. Formed last May, the members had no idea that randomly entering a contest at an open mic will lead to a collaboration. Due to their love for music, they are able to effortlessly fuse their music together. During their first jamming session, they performed Kendrick Lamar’s Swimming Pools and immediately felt the connection at the very last note. Since then, they had played at various venues including Jaya One, The Bee and The Curve, slowly leaving their trademark in the

music scene. Although music is a hobby they all enjoy together, Sarah Jade Quartet doesn’t reject the possibility of turning this into a full-time career in the event, an opportunity arises. They have also been working on original materials. Used to performing solo, Sarah has always stood her grounds when it comes to her music but working with Lux, BK and Nate has changed her in a way and she is now more open to ideas. The base of the song is usually created by Sarah. The rest of the members will add their ideas to blend in each instrument into the song.

“Sarah lays the foundation, it’s her child. We just put clothes on it.” - BK

Only a few months old, Sarah Jade Quartet agreed that they are now on the same page. It used to be more on individuality but they have evolved and now focus on collective ideas, trust and preserving the instant chemistry that becomes the glue of the band. Steadily growing every day, Sarah Jade Quartet hopes to continue doing music and will take a step further by creating an EP in the future.

Advice for music hopefuls: Just do it. We don’t know we had chemistry until we tried. If you’re doing it for the money and fame, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.

What did you study and what were you doing prior to taking the reins of the business? I studied culinary arts in Switzerland. I went in that direction because I didn’t feel that I enjoyed academic studies and I felt I would do better using my hands. Growing up, my father told me that if you were to do something skill related as opposed to something where everyone gets the same opportunity such as finance and accounting, it never leaves you – given that you practice, of course. I was working in the culinary field for a short while locally after my graduation and 13 years later, here I am. Ever since taking over from your dad, how has the experience been for you? I wouldn’t say taking over. I actually have a running joke with my sister - my dad can come in for just a while and tell us a few things which will solve many of our problems. As for now, I don’t think we have the sufficient experience to take over. He still mentors us and tells me the things which I may not want to hear but better from him than from anyone else, in my opinion. What are the challenges being actively involved in a family business? People tend to not be honest with you. I’m lucky that my sister as well as some guys on my team can be honest with me. Things like this are important otherwise the company won’t be able to function. If you have employees and family members who always think of themselves as owners of the business and they’re not there to work, that’s when there will be trouble. Why do you think your dad chose you and your sister to take over the company? He was smart. He actually chose me and my sister as we both have different qualities and the company is at a stage where one person will not be able to run the show. When the company first started, things were done based on gut impulses. Now, we have more processes and shareholders to answer to and more employees, 350 to be exact, whom we cannot disappoint. It has been made very clear to us that although it’s a family business, if we’re not good enough to run the show, someone else will be brought in to do it. What qualities would you look for in your successor? I would say someone who can bring the company forward. Every company has its own DNA which is why you have to be innovative and open to ideas. One of the key strengths that we have right now is that anyone can walk into our rooms and ask for advice. My successor would have to be one who embodies who we are.

How are you taking the company forward and making sure that it remains relevant? By taking risks: we started off as a retail tyre store and we do have good branding. We went on to establish the School of Skills, and moved on to other ventures from there. It’s all about taking risks, adding value to the business, and solving issues. Since your dad is mentoring you, what differences have you realised between your management style and his? I never got to see him when he was young and going all-out so this is going to be based on what I’m seeing right now. Everyone says we’re similar in terms of how we talk and how we think but he grew up in a less competitive environment where hard work would get you through. Today, we have an army to help so our management style is really very different. Then, he was managing a company, we are now managing people. Today, we have a lot more to lose. What work or life experience would you say has prepared you for your current role? Exposure through travelling: I’ve been exposed to different societies and different environments. Every time you travel, you see something good practiced elsewhere and you

have the choice of adopting that habit into your daily life and becoming a better person because of it. Even now, when we travel, we share these values with our staff. What is your advice to youth wanting to run their own businesses? Don’t do it unless you’re prepared to work seven days a week. Let me give you an example. Over the past few years, there have been a lot of café’s popping up but they close either on Tuesdays or Mondays and they open at odd hours. If you want to open a café, cater to people’s needs. When they need their coffee in the mornings, the café isn’t open as opposed to being open at night. To the parents, put the loan under the child’s name. Let them deal with the bank every month and let them deal with the pressure. That will, hopefully, show them that it isn’t easy. Do you find yourself constantly trying to fill your dad’s shoes? In the past I did but I don’t think it’s relevant any more. Right now, I think that we have some similar qualities but because the company has grown out of the whole retail network, we are a diversified business. This is an opportunity that he didn’t get so I guess it’s hard to actually compare.

Success in Sight Park Seo Joon in ‘She was pretty’, Kim Woo Bin in ‘The Heirs’, Lee Jong Suk in ‘School 2013’, Park Shin Hye in ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and Song Joong-Ki in ‘Descendants of the Sun’; these are all breakout stars that found their fame after one life-changing role. By the end of the year we will get a new fresh list of successful actors and actresses of 2016, so here is our prediction on who will land on it.

1.

-

2. Ryu Jun-Yeol Another actor benefitted from his role in Reply 1988 is the 29 year-old Ryu Jun-Yeol. Just debuted last year, Jun-Yeol is fast to climb the ladder to be on the frontline in the filming industry. His portfolio is full of diversified roles and his fan base is growing, thanks to his brilliant portrayal of each role. He is lined up for three movies and one anticipated romcom drama with Hwang Jung-Eum in MBC’s Lucky Romance.

3. Lee Sung-Kyung

2. 3.

4.

Debuted as a model, Sung-Kyung changed lane to acting and dare we say that she made the right choice. Secured her first role in It’s Okay, That’s Love, she learnt her way through the drama world and now she’s on her way to join the A-listers. Aside from playing the supporting role in Cheese in the Trap, this year she is also set to appear in the anticipated Doctors alongside big names that include Kim Rae-Won and Park Shin-Hye.

4. Park So Dam We would be crazy if we left out this lady from this list. She is made from pure talent and that is translated in her latest movie roles in The Silenced and The Priests which won her a number of awards. Challenged herself to grace the small screen last year, Park So Dam will take on new roles in two dramas scheduled to air this year; Beautiful Mind, Cinderella and Four Knights. With names that include Jang Hyuk, Jung Il-Woo and Ahn Ja-Hyeon as co-stars, we believe Park So Dam will shine in her own way.

1. Park Bo Gum Topping the list is none other than the crowd’s favourite, Park Bo Gum. Began his career in 2011, he finally found the trace of the limelight in Reply 1988 acting as Choi Teak and his natural talent in acting fueled by his genuine personality, has kept him on the right track to stardom. Aside from doing movies and dramas, he was also the cast member of a variety show, Youth over Flowers Africa along with three other fellow actors. He landed the main role in the upcoming historical drama, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds that is based on web novel of the same name.

5. Im Si Wan There are many that can take this spot; Nam Joo Hyuk, Choi Woo Shik, Seolhyun – but we decided to give it to this idol cum very successful actor, Im Si Wan from the group ZE:A. Siwan has been working hard to make a name as an actor. Although, his image as the member of an idol group is still hard to shake off, he’s effort is definitely getting him noticed. His most successful work includes The Attorney and Misaeng and his upcoming movie A Melody to Remember is sure to impress the audiences.

music by eusoff andrei

How did you meet each other? We have known each other since we were kids. We grew up together. We were in the same school and even the same class since we were three. When did you decide to start making music? We started playing music together when we were around 13 or 14 years old and that is when we started our own band. After school, we stopped playing for a couple of years and then we decided to get back into it. How was the shift from being indie to being with a major label? It actually put us a little bit more on the map as they have been giving us publicity and hooking us up with new opportunities. How would you describe your sound? Electronic music made by rock musician. When are you planning to release your next album? We will be working on an EP this year as well as a bunch of remixes. The album will probably be out early next year. Why ‘Fuzz Culture’? Fuzz would be in the sense of distortion, which both of us really like. Our studio is called ‘Studio Fuzz’ so ‘Fuzz Culture’ just seemed to complement it nicely. Who are your musical inspirations? Our influences range from Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, DefTones, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar. If you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive, who would it be? We would want to work with Rick Rubin and get him to produce us.

A

side from being the duo that is Fuzz Culture, Arsh Sharma & Srijan Mahajan also run a studio together where they record jingles and commercials aside from producing bands under their own record label. After spending three years as an indie band, they signed with Universal Music India last year. Having performed in France, U.A.E. and the U.K., they were down in Malaysia for the third time earlier this year for a performance at the Laundry Bar, Petaling Jaya. We managed to catch up with this duo from Delhi who responded with ‘Playing and hopefully not dead,’ when asked where they see themselves 10 years from now.

What are the similarities or differences in terms of the crowd when you perform in India and Malaysia? I find Indian people are a lot more rowdy and they tend to get really drunk, whereas Malaysians tend to be a little more chilled and reserved. What is your favourite part about performing in Malaysia? Coming to a different country and meeting many different people. It’s also interesting to note that our music is different from what Malaysians are used to as they seem to be more into pop music and are more American in terms of their music taste and it’s interesting to see people’s reaction and how they listen to our music.

What We Live For | American Authors

California

This American indie rock band’s second studio album stays through to their original sound while reflecting their maturity as a band on a whole. If you’re in need of feelgood, non-cheesy vibes, this is definitely the album to look out for. Besides the title track, look out for ‘I’m Born To Run’, ‘Replaced’, ‘Go Big Or Go Home’, ‘Mess With Your Heart’, and ‘Mind Body Soul’.

It may have taken them 15 years but they are definitely back. Nope, they definitely didn’t go anywhere seeing as this is their seventh studio album but this is definitely the one that puts them back on the map. While it goes without saying that the title track is a must-listen, do look out for ‘She’s Out of Her Mind’, ‘Los Angeles’, ‘No Future’, and ‘The Only Thing That Matters’.

Where the Light Shines Through

| Switchfoot

This Grammy Award-winning band’s tenth studio album is their first to be released via Vanguard Records. Described as an album of light born from one of the darkest times that lead singer Jon Foreman has been through, this album is not one to be missed – especially for you diehard fans. As catchy as the title track is, do look out for ‘Float’, ‘I Won’t Let You Go’, and ‘Shake This Feeling’.

temuan takdir

august 2016

he Malaysian film ‘Temuan Takdir’, which is set to screen in 42 cinemas nationwide on the 11th of this month, carries the message that there is no such thing as a perfect crime. Directed by first time director Dhyan Vimal who is also an entrepreneur in various field was eager to share his experience with the film industry for the first time. Naturally, the first question we had to ask is, why films and why now? “It was actually accidental. We wanted to do something under Project Dignity, which falls under Friends to Mankind, whereby we wanted to help young people come and learn skills. This is when the movie became a platform for people to learn,” he added. As a first time director as well as the producer of the film, he said he was glad he managed to multitask for the movie. He was involved in video editing as well as drone control to help minimise his expenses. However, do not be fooled into thinking that it’s a low budget production. At the time of the interview, the film was still being edited and their expenses 26

in total were expected to close at a whopping RM1.2million! “Learn as many skills as you can because it will come in use later. In fact, lack of a skill may actually stop you from growing in the future,” Vimal advised. When asked what separates this film from the other local films, he added that while he felt there were already some very good local films out there, ‘Temuan Takdir’ will have a different pace and style. “I didn’t make the mistakes that a lot of other filmmakers are doing: trying to go too far. I maintained a balance and I think it shows in the movie,” he said, having watched 20 different Malaysian films before beginning this project. The three casts of the movie, Amai Kamarudin, Azura Zainal, and Thanuja Ananthan jumped on the opportunity to act in this film after reading the script. For 28-year-old Amai, who persevered for nine years of auditioning before landing his first role on screen, first stumbled upon his role in the movie via Friends to Mankind’s

Project Dignity. He said the platform was good for people to get their names out there. “We should start from the bottom and work our way up. Passion is key as it may not work out for us if we’re only in it for the money,” said Amai, who is targeting international silver screens next. For two big names such as Thanuja and Azura who are both making their big screen debuts with this film, this is what they said about their biggest challenge in filming this movie: “I had to keep myself in check and stay in character. Even though the character is like me, by nature I am louder and crazy, it was still challenging but in a good way,” added Thanuja who played a beauty queen/model character very much like herself and has to choose between love and doing the right thing when she discovered that she was dating a criminal mastermind. “My challenge was doing the romantic scenes. I am a fun person and being romantic is not something I would do in public. It was tough and I was doing it with 50 other people watching me,” said Azura, who played a positive, happy-go-lucky girl who experienced tragedy and trying to get back into being positive again.

University of Dundee, Dental Student One of the main things that struck Maey during her time in Scotland was the fact that the weather was nothing similar to that of home. However, hailing from a tropical country with 365 days of summer, it is a welcome change. She marvelled at the breath-taking sceneries in Scotland, and explored the differences in culture. From the architecture to the beautiful landscapes, and from the way people act and behave in a foreign country, Maey felt her perspective in life broaden beyond what she already knows. Life in Dundee is also rather easy and accessible - Everything is within easy reach. Coming from a small city herself, Maey feels an incredibly homey vibe from the city. A relatively affordable place to live in, Maey said Scotland allowed her to save money for travelling, be it around Scotland for its highlands, Edinburgh for its medieval styled cities, or even around Europe.

A

s the years pass, those who find themselves involved in these social ills, such as underage smoking, playing truant, bullying, and even vandalism, are getting younger. Having either been there ourselves at some point or another in our lives, many of us can identify that involvement in these activities stem from a common cause: lack of an avenue to vent and deal with emotions. Of course, this is not true across the board. There are schools and even colleges out there that try their level best to strike a balance in their students’ academics and creative skills through various initiatives involving art, music, and sports and for that, we applaud them. However, most of us are not so fortunate in terms of our educational institutions. This particular writer recalls a time where he was subject to interrogation and judgmental

looks while in high school from certain parties for directing ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ for an inter-school drama competition. After all, why would anyone display a cross on stage during a graveyard scene set in 19th century Europe when most of the cast, including the director, are of a particular faith, which is not Christianity? The nerve! In any case, I digressed. The point, however, is that creativity is an extremely subjective topic, even when it comes to the extent of it and the rules that should be set, if there should be any at all. Keeping in theme with our creative issue, we spoke to two women who work in the creative industry on this topic. Thanuja Ananthan, after winning the Miss World Malaysia title in 2009, is still very much involved in her work with animals, which was her platform during her reign. From being a beauty queen, she has branched out to modelling together with her twin sister, Anuja.

Was your venture into the arts intentional or accidental? I have always wanted to be a beauty queen – specifically Miss World – since the age of five. Growing up, we used to watch the pageant every year as a family and my mother would explain to me that the women who hold these titles, have a platform to push their passion. After winning the title, it was the perfect platform to push my animal work that I have been doing since I was five. I would follow my mum to the market and replace all of the vegetables in her bag with kittens.

Being an artiste yourself, how do you think we can integrate creativity into the curriculum so that youth can better manage their emotions? Encourage kids to be expressive and do not set boundaries for them or restrict them. Have an avenue for them where they can be creative and get involved in projects to express themselves. Find your passion, know what you love, and then channel that and move towards that. For example, I love kids and I do feel empathy for the blind, but those are not my passion. Knowing your passion and being expressive about it, keeps one in check and you can get very creative because you will be doing what you love.

There is a stigma in this country that if you do not have a ‘job’ and choose to pursue a career in entertainment, you will not be able to provide for yourselves and this tends to discourage the youth. What is your advice for them? I would say we should start by advising the parents: Stop living by the book where your child has to be an accountant, a doctor, or a lawyer. Kids tend to be braver these days and more prone to rebellious behaviour, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

When you were an adolescent, how did you deal with your pent-up emotions? For me it was my rescue efforts with animals and spending time with my pets. I was also an athlete back in school so I did a lot of track and field and cheerleading as well. That is how I kept myself busy. Even today, running really helps me: When I am mad, I run. When I am down, I run. Then I go for my tablespoon of Nutella and peanut butter. These things help, but of course, there’s also my twin sister, who’s always there for me. 32

What does the term creative expression mean to you? I think it’s boundless. You can express yourself creatively in any way you like. Even keeping a diary can be considered as creative expression. It doesn’t have to produce anything and to each individual it’s different. Azura Zainal, a radio/TV personality, is no stranger to the creative world. Starting with commercials from a young age, she got her big break in the form of being a host for Disney Buzz right after she finished high school.

Was your venture into the arts intentional or accidental? I started way back in 1999. When I was a child, I actually wanted to be a lawyer but mainly because I never saw entertainment as an option. Thankfully, I had a mother who believed in giving her children exposure so, from a very young age, she started putting my sister and I in choir groups and dancing groups. Then one day, an opportunity came, which I thought was an audition for a commercial, but it turned out to be something else – it was for Disney!

Being an artiste yourself, how do you think we can integrate creativity into the curriculum so that youth can better manage their emotions? I’m not trying to say that there shouldn’t be any rules and regulations, but I do believe that with

fewer rules and regulations, people can become more creative. Nowadays in schools, it’s getting a bit restrictive. If the kids want to do something they would be faced with restrictions. However, in a way, restrictions could also make some people a little more creative when they figure out how to go around it. For you to find your passion, it’s important to try different things.

There is a stigma in this country that if you don’t have a ‘job’ and choose to pursue a career in entertainment, you won’t be able to provide for yourselves and this tends to discourage the youth. What is your advice for them? In my opinion, based on experience with my niece and my sister, I think that parents from Gen Y have improved and tend to be more supportive of their children. Their children are very expressive and they support it. I think that’s how it should be.

When you were an adolescent, how did you deal with your pent-up emotions? I like to sing and dance so I just lock myself in the room whenever I’m stressed or not really in the mood to meet people. Then I’d just dance and go crazy. I was also active in sports during my school days and all of the track and field did help in releasing all of the unwanted energy. Now that I have my driving license, I de-stress while driving.

What does the term creative expression mean to you? The first thing that came to mind is painting. There’s a variety of colours and so many ways one can paint. Paintings are generally very subjective. I would say that creative expression is something that you would be able to put out there without worrying about what others might say.

Wide range of gel liner using eye shadow Black and brown are too mainstream for your eyeliner? Open your palette of eye shadows and choose a colour you want as your eyeliner. Yes, it is possible. Wet your angled brush or eyebrow pencil and dab it in your eye shadow shade before applying it along your eye line.

An hour in front of the mirror wasted away to get your eyebrows and contour right down to perfection. Honestly! Who has time for that? You no longer have to get out of your way to spend every second and every penny for beauty purposes. We’ve prepared a list of beauty hacks you’re able Pencil eye liner as eyeshadow primer to complete in a jiffy.

Now the other way around, you can use white (recommended!) or neutral coloured eyeliner as the base for your eyeshadows. Colour your eyelids with pencil liner and apply your shadows on top of it to achieve a deeper and long-lasting colour.

Lip balm as cheek stain Open your makeup case and take out that tinted lip balm. However, instead of putting it on your lips, you can also use it as a personalised blusher. Dab it on your cheekbones to add a beautiful healthy glow and the moist texture of the lip balm will ensure it’ll stay throughout the day.

Pencil to gel liner This is a great way to save money! Hold your pencil eyeliner at the flame for one second to create a gel liner if you want a thicker eye line. Remember, don’t put it for too long as it’ll melt to a point that it will be too gooey to use.

Get a polished manicure Another good use of petroleum jelly is to get a clean manicure. Colouring inside the line of your nails can be tricky and often enough, it’ll be a huge mess once you’re done. What you can do is to apply a bit of petroleum jelly around your nails to make it easier to wipe off excess nail polish.

Re-moisturise your mascara

36

| CAMPUS PLUS

Not many know that there’s another alternative instead of changing your mascara every two months. Even the most expensive mascara tends to dry up after a while and it’ll get clumpy if you’re penny-pinching enough to still use them. Worry no more, just add a bit of saline solution in your mascara tube.

Lined lips This is a common problem for a lot of people; smudged lipsticks because you just can’t decide the lines of your lips. I personally use this trick myself. Apply a layer of concealer around your lips before putting on lipstick to avoid it from going way beyond the natural creases of the skin around your mouth.

Short hairdo or not? There is an easy way to find out. Place a pen or a pencil under your chin horizontally and a ruler below your ear vertically and get the measurement where the pen/pencil touches the ruler. If it is less than 2.25 inch, then you definitely can pull off a short hairdo!

D.I.Y lipstick Make use of that loose pigments to magically fashion up your own customised lipstick instead of throwing it away. It’s a simple process, really. Mix the loose pigments with petroleum jelly such as Vaseline and you have a lipstick with whatever shades you want. Alternatively, you can also mix it with a clear lip balm.

Symmetrical eyeliner with just one dot Getting a symmetrical eyeliner is as easy as connecting dots – literally. Draw a dot where you want your eyeliner to end and connect them to the tip of your lash line. Yes, it’s that simple.

Moisturise oily skin People keep telling us to wear a moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated but what happens if your skin is oily? Applying moisturiser on top of it doesn’t seem like a good idea. The solution to that is to put apple cider mixed with water or green tea on your face before applying moisturiser.

Fuller lashes with translucent powder You don’t have to be extreme and put layers and layers of mascara to get that celebrity lashes. Puff a bit of translucent powder on your lashes after the first coat of mascara. Once the powder is applied, put a second coat of mascara to finish the look.

Pour tap water on hair before swimming. Swim with ease knowing that your hair won’t be a huge pool of mess afterwards due to the chlorine in the water by washing it with tap water before making that jump. This will prevent chemical in the pool from damaging hair. For better effect, you may also use a hair conditioner.

piercings 101

august 2016

If you haven’t gotten a piercing and are planning to get it soon, know this: while the advent of modern technology has made the process itself relatively painless (it feels more like a pinch than a needle piercing your skin), the recovery process definitely isn’t. The healing process differs in terms of length from one person to another and also takes into account other external factors such as diet. Above all, remember to keep it clean to avoid getting an infection (alcohol swabs help!). You should leave the initial piercing in for at least three months even though it may look as if the wound has healed.

44

| CAMPUS PLUS

These days, there are a wide selection of earrings out there, even for guys, so shop around and see what suits your style. From studs to barbells to spacers, feel free to experiment but do take your time before committing to something like a spacer. Your earlobe won’t shrink back to its original size without surgery. If you haven’t yet decided if a pierced ear is for you, remember that you could always opt for clip-ons or magnetic earrings first to see if getting a piercing would suit you.

While it is perfectly acceptable to don the same earpiece every day, it wouldn’t hurt to have a few options depending on the occasion or even what you’re wearing. For example, something plain would be suitable for day wear while something with a bit more bling would be more suited for night wear. Also, the right pair of studs can work both ways when paired properly: for both casual and formal occasions. While hoop earrings may seem more appealing for everyday use, as it’s easier to put on compared to stud earrings, remember that they come off just as easily especially when you’ve been using them for a while. If you’re the forgetful type and forget to remove them on a regular basis when you sleep or even when you go to the beach, chances of you accidentally unhooking them are quite high and could potentially result in a lost earpiece or, even worst, a damaged earlobe if it is accidentally pulled out in a forceful manner.

As with all accessories, remember to remove and clean them on a regular basis. You don’t want your towel accidentally getting stuck to it while drying yourself or even having it somehow removed forcefully by the way you sleep will result in an extremely uncomfortable feeling as well as an injured earlobe.

Take a section of hair from the back of the head and do a half braid starting from the middle part.

Take a small section of hair from the top of each side of the head and twist it outwards.

Join both twists and tie them into a ponytail at the back of the head and make sure it lays over the previous braid.

Take a larger section of hair below the twisted section and braid them back along the head.

Combine three parts into one braid and tousle the rest of the hair.

Margaery Tyrell: Half Ponytail •

Take the top front sections of the hair and twist it outwards to the back of the head and pin it using bobby pins.

Take a larger section of hair right below it and do the same. Pin both ends of sections so that they are parallel to each other.

Ponytail both sections to the middle of the back together and spray the front part to give it a lift.

Do the same for the other side of the head.

Melisandre: Fiery Bun •

Part your hair in the middle and pin the front bangs.

Take a section of the front hair and let it stay loose.

Section off top part of the hair above ears and braid them together.

Circle the braid into a bun and bobby pin it in place.

If you want more volume, take a section of loose hair at the bottom part and twist it around the bun.

Part your hair in the middle.

Take two inches of hair next to the parting line on both sides and French braid both sections.

Braid the two French braids (yes, braid the braids) and tie it up with a band.

Curl the rest of your hair to create a tousled look.

getting to know games

The anaTomy of an RPG AUGUST 2016

R

ole-playing games (or RPGs for short) are games that let one live lives that one will never get to lead in the real world – it allows one to explore different worlds, those of science fiction, magic and wonder; either as yourself, or as a whole new personality that you would never embody in real life. Gamers have been known to be able to immerse themselves wholly into wonderful RPGs such as Skyrim, Fallout, Dragon Age and Mass Effect for more hours than is considered healthy; but what exactly are the parts of the game that truly lets us immerse ourselves in it, to truly become one with the character we are supposed to identify with?

A driving narrative

A role-playing game would be nothing without a story. Like any book or movie, the narrative is the driving force of the game, and the first thing the player will read up on after he finds an interesting looking game online or in the store. The story is the first thing that the player will focus on whenever they pick up a game, and is what helps them decide to purchase the game. Many games even have branching substories that tie in with the main story, allowing

Character building and development players a better glimpse into the world and the characters of the game. In fact, game players may even be more absorbed in the narrative, as they play an active role in it.

The world and its inhabitants

The world of an RPG game can be said to be an elaborate character on its own; with its own charm and dark sides. Its lore, its history, its setting, its architecture… these are the things that make a world come alive, and make it feel like it’s real. The graphics doesn’t even need to be fantastic; the world just needs to be deep enough to garner enough interest. The people inhabiting the world is also one of the incredibly important things to take note of – who are they and where do they come from? Do they occupy different factions? What do they believe in, and what do they fight for? These are but a few questions that will make them more believable, and not just mindless pawns or fodder in a game.

In a role-playing game, the most important point is to... Yes, you guessed it… roleplay. Like the cartoon series, the avatar in the game serves as a bridge of sorts, connecting the player and the game world, giving them a body to move around in to explore the world and its inhabitants. By allowing the player character (PC) to level up and gain more powerful abilities as they grow is also one of the main draws of RPG games; making players feel as if they’ve progressed and become stronger. There are often two types of PC avatars: ones that allow you to customise, and those that provide you with a set hero to start with. The former (which I personally prefer) will allow you to choose your own name, gender, character class, history and powers, it also helps one get much more connected to their in-game character, and is more focused with the player choice; while the latter is more focused on a more detailed, but set story.

Missions and quests

Like any other game, missions and quests often make up 90% of the player’s experience in an RPG. A game isn’t really a game unless there is stuff for

you to do as a player, after all. Besides allowing the character to grow by gaining experience points and better equipment, quests have the potential to let the player explore and get to know the world and other characters better through exploration and interaction, and forward the story. However, games should try to avoid relying too much on fetching and escort missions, as those may turn the experience bland very quickly.

Karma, choices and consequences

Have you ever shot someone in the head on the same team in a video game while they were talking, have them budge and grunt a bit, and come out unscathed, still continuing on with the lines they were saying before? Have you ever had the urge to shoot them some more, just for the heck of it since they won’t die anyway? If the things we do, or the choices we choose, don’t change the world we inhabit, our actions will ultimately mean nothing, and will have absolutely no weight at all. By having your choices and actions influence the world around you, not only will you be able to shape the world the way you want to, you will be able to play as the person you want to become as well.

Ease of use Its mechanical keyboard is a delight to type on, and its keys are nicely spread out so that your fingers do not feel cramped when typing on it. The Type Cover also includes magnets for easier attachment to the tablet. However, despite it being lighter than the average laptop, it can turn out to be rather heavy for a tablet. Weighing at 310 grams, it adds to the heaviness of the Surface Pros – 1.07kg (Surface Pro 4) and 1.1kg (Surface Pro 3) respectively.

Design & Features It only comes in black and some parts of the type cover are decorated in matte black. It almost feels like a carpet when touched. Its fingerprint sensor is to the right of the trackpad, and is extremely accessible whenever you need to log in at a moment’s notice. It features a glass trackpad that provides accurate mouse movement, and also a stylus for drawing or writing. 54

The keyboard also comes with an accelerometer that allows the keyboard to detect what position it is in. This means that it will automatically turn off the keys when you fold it. This prevents you from accidentally typing mysterious phrases. With dedicated buttons for media control, screen brightness, and windows shortcuts, the keyboard is as easy-to-use as a normal laptop keyboard. The Type Cover also serves as a protective cover when you’re not using it, allowing for cover and protection while you travel.

This is where the Type Cover shines – after you register your fingerprint with the Surface Pro, it takes less than a second for it to recognise your fingerprint before it is able to recognise your finger and bring you to your desktop, all ready to work and/or play. Faster The Vivo V3Max, which comes in Gold and Rose Gold, carries the tagline ‘Faster than Faster’ and certainly comes across as a phone which promises quite a bit. First impression? The fingerprint sensor actually delivers in terms of its response time. Design It’s 2.5D tempered glass front cover is perfectly complemented by its side panels which has a gentle curve that feels natural. The interesting thing about this particular model is that while it doesn’t exactly scream lavish from the front, its back, aluminium treated with a zircon sand coating and anodised to create a shimmering effect with smooth tactile finish, does have an elegant finish to it.

espite being limited in terms of size, the newly opened branch in the Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur contains a full menu inclusive of main meals as compared to the other cafe at the Sunway Putra Mall, opened last year. For starters, we were served the Penguin’s Attack Pack, a warm smoked duck salad, as well as From the Seas of Krypton, a seafood chowder. The salad was surprisingly tasty (which is really something, coming from someone who isn’t exactly a salad kind of guy), especially in terms of the dressing used with the smoked duck bringing it all together rather well. The seafood chowder did not disappoint either. Served in an edible bread bowl, it contained a generous amount of seafood. Next, came the main courses, the Dynamic Duo Pounded Patty, a homemade Australian beef patty burger, and the Suicide Cordon Bleu. With a patty made from scratch, the burger melted in our mouths and provided a nice companion to the cordon bleu, which was overflowing with cheese. Among the drinks which were offered to us, the ones that stood out in particular were Nightwing’s Elixir as well as Bane’s Crushed Nuts. The former is a refreshing Blue Curacao soda while the latter is an indulgent peanut butter ice blended drink. To wrap things up, we were more than delighted to try a few of the dishes from the dessert page of the menu - The Justice 3, The Daily Planet Rush and Harley Quinn’s Roundhouse Pancake. My personal favourite was The Justice 3, a sinfully sweet crème brûlée, as well as the Daily Planet Rush, a soft crepe filled with delicious vanilla ice cream. The

pancakes, while extremely soft, unfortunately come with bananas, which I happen to not be a particular fan of. For those of you planning to head here, don’t forget to don your DC Comics Super Hero T-Shirts to enjoy a 10% discount on your bill.

Meals range from RM21 – RM44, appetisers, sides and desserts range from RM18 – RM29, hot drinks range from RM8 – RM19, and iced drinks range from RM9.9 – RM25 Opening hours: 10AM-10PM Address: Level 5, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

cosplaying

AUGUST 2016

o t s s e r D

Express M

alaysia’s cosplay community has come a long way since its inception through crossculture. Cosplay or costume playing is a widely embraced culture in Japan and they’ve been setting the trend for all to follow with a myriad of animes and games given birth for thousands of loyal fans. Battling through scepticality and disapproval, cosplayers all around the world are known for their downright passion in personating characters. The cosplay community in our country is growing steadily and have seen changes in terms of public acceptance whereby they are more open minded to the whole idea of cosplaying thanks to education and awareness. An aficionado of cosplaying and the world it encapsulates; Kazuki Foo fell in love with the craft at a very young age and his desire to share the passion with others was the reason behind the establishment of one the biggest cosplay communities here, Malaysia Cosplay Toshokan. At the age of 26, he is now the cofounder and managing/editorial director of the organisation. Despite being active in the cosplaying scene, he is also busy managing a hotel management business and a web development and branding company. Juggling all three jobs at once must’ve been tricky but because of his perpetual ardour for the art of costume playing, he found a way to make it work. There is a lot more to cosplaying than meets the eye; the intricate costume making, meticulous makeup, skits for performances and even the poses for a photoshoot. We spoke to Kazuki to crack the codes of this singular art.

58

| CAMPUS PLUS

What is the idea behind Malaysia Cosplay Toshokan? We formed it as a platform for cosplayers and those who love Japanese culture in Malaysia so that they can join and grow with the community. It’s also a chance for them to frame out creativity skills. How big is the cosplay community in Malaysia? The number of cosplayers in the community right now is about 30,000 to 40,000 including foreign students from many countries including Japan, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Can you tell us more on the growth of a cosplayer? There are many phases involved. Basically, in phase one, we watch anime and come up with a simple prototype for the costume. The first two years of cosplaying usually focuses more on having fun and enjoying the experience. Moving on to phase two, cosplayers are usually more in tune with what they want to do and their skill set is more refined. They will be able to design and build props and start to join the competitions. Cosplayers will be in phase three once they receive recognition by getting invitations to perform at events. Successful cosplayers will also be invited to join international events. How do you usually choose a character and plan for a performance? By watching anime. Whenever I watch anime, I’ll be able to feel the connection with the characters that I want to cosplay as. From then, I’ll start by sketching the costume using schematic diagram and build the background props. I’ll refine the costume as I go along. Simple costumes take two months to complete whereas detailed ones take about four to six months. One costume can last between one to five years, depending on the materials.

What is your favourite cosplay character so far? It would be Strength from Black Rock Shooter. Was there any objection from your parents and loved ones when you started cosplaying? They used to think that it was merely a dressup hobby. Over time, cosplaying began to take up a lot of my time and they began to worry. But it got better when I grew up because they understand it’s my passion. Is there any possibility to turn this into a fulltime career? In Malaysia, there are not as many opportunities as in other countries. The cosplayers can eventually become models if they’re scouted by agencies but they usually end up being an event organiser or manager. Internationally, they have their own cosplay branding and a lot of cosplay cafes to work in. Commonly, they’ll jump into the entertainment industry such as the acting or music scene since it’s a big market there. What is your take on the ongoing stigma that cosplaying is only for ‘nerds’ and ‘geeks’? It really depends on the interest people put into the art itself. A number of cosplayers are actual graduates with another profession aside from being cosplayers. What is the most interesting ‘Behind the Scene’ moment from a photo shoot session? We did a shoot at an abandoned building once and we fooled around with the props not knowing that somebody previously committed suicide at the same location. What is the plan to expand this sub-culture in Malaysia? We’re currently expanding to Singapore and Thailand so that we can strengthen the

community through cultural diversity. As for Malaysia, although the community is growing, it’s still not quite there yet. We’re trying our best to raise the cosplay standards, in our country so that it’ll be at the same level internationally. What advice would you give to those who are afraid to cosplay due to public’s perception? Cosplaying involves the use of one’s creativity and critical thinking and we’re constantly working towards educating people. In terms of parent’s support, they’re changing because they realise it is still a better activity than smoking or doing drugs.

saving worlds one crisi s at a time

Superpowers are something that every kid has dreamed of; and that dream never dies, even as we reach adulthood. That’s why many of us turn to the media to live out our super-powered fantasies through the amazing worlds that can only exist in imaginations. 1. Boku no Hero Academia

2. Tiger & Bunny

In a world where almost everyone is gifted with amazing powers known as quirks, Izuku Midoriya is born as one of the rare, quirkless kids. Nevertheless, Midoriya still retained his drive and desire to become a superhero. Moved by Midoriya’s drive and desire to save people, the world’s No.1 hero All Might, the only hero known (to the readers) to have a transferable power, chose Midoriya to be his successor. The story follows Midoriya as he enrolled in Japan’s most prestigious school for superheroes, Yuuei, and learns to control his newly acquired powers, while learning to work with, and keep up with his classmates.

In the futuristic city of Stern Bild, a fictional reimagined version of New York, superpowered individuals known as “Noted Entities with eXtraordinary Talents” (NEXTs), began appearing 45 years ago. Superheroes have emerged, and have since become an incredible media sensation – they each have sponsors, advertise for real-life companies, and their actions are broadcast on the popular TV Show, “Hero TV”. The show focuses on two heroes who have just been assigned to be partners - Kotetsu T. Kaburagi a.k.a. Wild Tiger, and Barnaby Brooks Jr, as they try to work out their differences in opinions on how a superhero should act.

3. Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de What do you do when you and a group of friends suddenly receive powers for no particular reason at all, and there’s no endof-the-world crisis going on for you to save? A conundrum faced by four members of a literature club – and their faculty advisor’s niece in an elementary school. With four awesome powers such as time manipulation, element manipulation, reverting things to their original state, and matter creation (and one particularly useless one that just lights one’s own hands on fire), the group of friends mess around, bond and get into trouble, all while learning more about their powers along the way. 60

4. Darker than Black After the occurrence of two spatial anomalies that caused both the skies and the earth in South America (Heaven’s Gate) and in Tokyo (Hell’s Gate), to be altered disastrously, the stars of the world disappeared, only to be replaced by false stars. During this tim e, people capable of amazing supernatural feats (but who have to ‘pay the price’ by indulging in certain compulsions) known as ‘Contractors’ appeared. Due to their ability to completely separate their logic and emotions, they are often utilised by organisations and nations as spies and assassins. The series revolves around Hei, a Chinese Contractor, as he goes on espionage and assassination missions in Tokyo under the direction of a mysterious organisation known as “The Syndicate”.

5. One-Punch Man Despite looking like a normal everyday idiot in a costume, Saitama is the world’s strongest hero. Although, the world doesn’t realise that, Saitama is capable of taking out all manner of enemies in one-punch. Saitama is the one that usually saves the city from overwhelming disasters (which no one ever sees him do, unfortunately), but no one (except a select few who have seen him in action) ever believes him, due to his plain appearance. However, there is one single drawback to being all-powerful: due to the fact that no one is stronger than him, he’s become bored with his overwhelming power, and is constantly looking for something that can challenge him. With incredibly detailed animation, watching Saitama struggle to gain recognition while fighting off world-threatening monsters can be a grand, hilarious journey for the viewer.

The Venice of the North – Giethoorn

“Row, row, row your boat; gently down the stream,” may just be a nursery rhyme to the rest of the world, but to the citizens of Giethoorn, it is their daily life, and the way they get around town. One of the few autofree zones in the world, there are absolutely no vehicles running on gas (although it has been known to make certain exceptions). Nicknamed “The Venice of the North”, the people of Giethoorn travel about by rowing boats through an intricate channel of canoe trails instead of roads and highways. As a result, the entire village has an incredibly picturesque, dream-like view not unlike that of the Shire of Lord of the Rings, but with rivers. I’d imagine you’d be able to take a deep breath without smelling any kind of smoke in the air there too. Although, I’d shudder to imagine what kind of traffic jams they encounter when it’s winter.

The Green Giants of Alaska

If you’ve ever dreaded your parents telling you to “finish up your vegetables”, you probably won’t be ecstatic to find out about the fact that there exist plants larger than a fully grown human being. Due to Alaska’s days being far longer than their nights during summer – up to 19 hours per day, the vegetables get an abundance of sunlight, allowing them to keep growing when plants in other parts of the world have stopped. The constant sunlight also makes the plants sweeter, as they spend 3/4th of the day creating sugar, and only 1/4th of it turning it into starch. As a result, despite Alaska’s growing season being shorter than most countries, when plants there grow, grow they do; creating an entire crop of monster vegetables that are big enough to warrant the rental of a lorry just to haul them around.

Underwater Jams Have you ever tried talking to someone underwater, only to have a weird, gurgling whale noise and a bunch of bubbles come out? Well, a band in Denmark, named Between Music, has completely mastered the art of playing music underwater. Using specialised instruments, such as a hydraulophone, violin, electromagnetic harp, chimes and percussion, and even a distinctive vocal technique for underwater singing, their performances and music have distinct, eerie qualities to it that might even be soothing for some. Taking years of experimentation and countless test-runs, the band has evolved to not only be an auditory marvel, but a visual one as well. The band performs in individual man-sized fish-tanks, and doesn’t use any oxygen tanks. Instead, they will pop their heads up for air every so often.
