Fun Running for a Robust Lifestyle As an effort to boost health awareness, The Sungai Long Medical Centre (SLMC) was back again with yet another instalment of its annual Fun Run. The run that was held on 26th of April near the medical centre, was among the many initiatives offered by SLMC in order to bring the Sungai Long community together to embrace a healthier lifestyle. The entertaining event saw the participation of UTAR staff, students as well as members of the Sungai Long community and the SLMC staff. Now in its third year, the Fun Run has witnessed a steady increase in runners from 1,500 in 2013 to 2,500 this year. The Fun Run includes two categories of 5km and 10km routes. The 10km route runners set off at 7.00am while the 5km route runners followed suit at 7.15am. Guided by SLMC’s renowned physiotherapists, participants were seen performing warm up stretches and cold down exercises. Committed to advocating healthier lifestyles, SLMC also set up 15 exhibition booths in order to educate the public regarding crucial health issues such as diet, hospitalisation insurance, physiotherapy, care of the elderly as well as Fo Guang Shan’s volunteer recruitment for medical relief. Of course, the run was concluded with lucky winners bagging gleaming medals from the race as well as gifts from the lucky draw. Other participants did not return home empty-handed as certificates of participation and freebies such as t-shirts, snacks and drinks were also given out.
APU’s Cultural Night Kicks
Off with a Bash
In light of the Mauritian Independence Day, the Mauritian Community of Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) initiated a night of spectacular celebrations. The cultural gathering which fell on the 12th of March attracted more than 250 students and staff, who all tapped into the impeccable beauty of Mauritian culture. The highlight of the night was none other than the performance of the Sega dance by the Mauritian students – a prominent traditional dance that every Mauritian is brought up with. With its rhythmic, lively music and colourful costumes, the crowd was injected with a nostalgic vibe. A unifying multi-cultural atmosphere prevailed during the night as the event also saw cultural performances from other international students from Indonesia, Kazakhstan, India as well as Pakistan. Astonishing performances such as the Diablo performance by the Chinese Language & Cultural Society (CLCS) and the Bollywood dance by the Indian Cultural Youth Society (ICYS) rounded up a night of amusing entertainment.

Curtin Sarawak IEM Students in Inter-Varsity Engineering Leadership Programme
Allergan and Anglia Ruskin University Establishes Medical Aesthetics Training Programme in Asia-Pacific
Two representatives of Curtin Sarawak’s Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Student Section were given the opportunity to participate in the Inter-Varsity Engineering Leadership Programme that was held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru recently. They were Daniel Tie Yung Xiang and Genevieve Ann Tang Tuang Kah, who were accompanied by the Associate Lecturer and Advisor to Curtin Sarawak’s IEM Student Section, Jameson Malang. The programme was jointly organised by UTM’s Career Centre, Office of Student Affairs & Alumni Centre for Academic Leadership & Professional Development, UTMLead, IEM-UTM Student Section and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (Southern Branch) and saw the participation of over 700 graduating engineering students. The Engineering Leadership Platform aims to provide the means for developing leadership skills amongst graduating engineering students, besides enlightening them on the future challenges in the engineering profession. It also provides guidance on developing teamwork strategies, key relationship building, networking and communication skills as well as a wide networking opportunity with professional engineers and fellow graduating students in Malaysia. Civil engineering student Tie appreciated the opportunity to learn more on the advancements in construction technology in Malaysia during the event. As for Tang, a petroleum engineering student, a talk that highlighted the future of the oil and gas industry provided stimulating insights on the local scene and inspired her to further broaden her knowledge of the industry. 10

Sunway Education Group Is Top In Student Satisfaction According to the Student Barometer Survey Entry Wave 2014, Sunway Education Group has achieved the highest student satisfaction for graduate employment out of 15 Asian institutions. The survey was undertaken by tracking feedback from more than two million students from 1,400 universities, colleges, schools and government agencies across 30 countries through i-graduate. While in Asia, over 32,000 students participated in the survey. Education institutions are evaluated across eight scopes, which includes decision-making, application process, enquiry to acceptance, arrival and orientation, learning experience, living experience, support services and likelihood of recommendation to others. Also, the survey will track and compare the decision-making, expectations, perceptions and intentions of students from application to graduation. Moreover, the combined group of international students from Sunway University and Sunway College gave the highest score out of seven institutions in Malaysia for expert lecturers, programme content, quality lecturers, programme organisation, academics’ English, performance feedback, good teachers, research and marking criteria. i-graduate’s Director of Client Services (Asia), Guy Perring said, “One of the most important considerations when it comes to selecting an education institution for both parents and students in Asia, is the ability to secure a job in a globally competitive marketplace.”
Malaysian Youths Upbeat That Universities Will Impart Career-Oriented Skills The 2015 Laureate/Zogby Student Survey saw the responses of more than 23,000 Laureate International Universities’ students and over 4,000 non-Laureate students across 22 countries and provided eye-opening insights on students’ perceptions towards their education systems. INTI International University (INTI) is a part of the Laureate International Universities network, saw more than 650 of its students participating in the survey which was conducted earlier in the year. A majority of them believed that universities in the future would teach career-oriented skills. Almost all students (92%) believed that it was important to promote lifelong. In short, the world’s young people are optimistic that higher education will bring them a brighter future. The survey also found a near-consensus among students around the world (93%) that universities should work directly with employers to help teach students the soft skills
they would need in order to be successful. INTI’s Chief Executive Officer, Rohit Sharma said, “Practical knowledge of what skills employers need will help realise the ambitions and abilities of students and make them more attractive to employers. To date, we have worked with more than 200 employers, bringing in real-life workplace experience to our students. Thanks to this survey, Laureate and Zogby developed the first-of-its-kind global Student Confidence Index, which is a two-part index that tracks student attitudes on the current state of higher education and its future. The Student Confidence Index found that students in Malaysia were confident in both the current higher education system, as well as in the future. A Culinary Competition That Wastes No Food In Malaysia alone, more than eight million kilograms of food is wasted every day. With this amount, up to six million people can be fed. In order to raise the public’s awareness as well as to instil the “waste not” mentality in their students, KDU University College’s School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts (SHTCA) has organised a ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ culinary competition. During the competition, participants were required to prepare a main course in 60 minutes, but the main challenge came from the fact that they were required to use “secret ingredients” that included chicken liver, chicken gizzard, and partly wilted vegetables. According to SHTCA’s Academic Department Head and Executive Chef Fami Taufeq, “Our message to the public is simple – do not waste food as there are a lot of people who are hungry out there.” 51 students participated in this competition. They were divided into 17 groups with three members each. The students then were evaluated based on their creativity, hygiene and cleanliness, organisation, skill and technique and finishing. Ultimately, Diploma in Culinary Arts students, Maw Kah Hong, Lee Zhi Han and Wong Kean Pong have won the first prize with their fusion dishes of Braised Chicken Feet, Deep Fried Chicken Gizzard and Three-layered Chicken Liver with Mushroom. They won a 2-day, 1-night stay in Eight Acres, Raub for three and RM500 cash.

Intel International Science and Engineering Fair a Platform for Malaysian Students to Showcase Solutions The annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) represents the world’s largest pre-college science competition. It provides the opportunity for over 1,700 school students across 75 countries, regions and territories to showcase their independent research and to compete for prizes worth up to US$4 million. This year’s Intel ISEF takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA and will see the representation of twelve Form 4 and Form 5 students from Malaysia. A proud fact: our Malaysian students have competed at every Intel ISEF since 1999, with one notable school – Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Lintang – garnering the most wins. Last year’s edition saw SMK Batu Lintang’s Faye Jong Sow Fei create history with the most wins for Malaysia in Intel ISEF’s history. She is the school’s third consecutive Intel ISEF winner and the school hopes its representative for this year, Leslie Chai Jia Le becomes its fourth winner. Titled ‘Biowaste to Biosorbent’, Leslie will be showcasing his project which focuses on the galvanising industry. It would be about using chicken bones to treat and remove heavy metals in industrial wastewater. Intel Malaysia’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdul Rahman Abu Haniffa enthused, “We wish the Malaysian delegation all the very best in this year’s competition and hope that they will come home enriched with the knowledge and new experiences from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.” Finalists at the competition will be judged by hundreds of science, engineering and industry professionals of PhD level or the equivalent. The Intel ISEF 2015 is jointly funded by Intel and the Intel Foundation with additional awards and support coming from dozens of other academic, corporate, governmental and science-focused organisations.

UCSI Hosts Eighth Malaysia Footwear Design Competition Last month, UCSI University was the first private institute of higher learning in Malaysia to host the semi-finals of the eighth Malaysia Footwear Design Competition (MFDC). This is the first time a private university has been chosen as a supporting partner for the MFDC. UCSI University Group Corporate Affairs’ Vice President, Leong Sat Sing, said that UCSI’s collaboration with the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Shoe Industry Association is the perfect opportunity to expose the younger generation to the fashion industry, while nurturing their interest to be more passionate about the country’s footwear industry. “We believe that talent must not, and cannot, only be taught. It must be challenged and given the opportunity to shine,” he added. The MFDC has received over 70 entries from institutions of higher learning from all over the country and is part of the larger KL artREKA Festival 2015, which aims to provide a platform for local talents to showcase their creative works. The awards ceremony for both the MFDC and the De Institute of Creative Arts and Design (ICAD) mySENI 2015 Painting Competition will be held on the 28th of November.
Inspiring Feminism Through Project Inspire Feminism is becoming a hotter topic by the second, and people everywhere are responding to it with increasingly creative initiatives. One of the latest ones is Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World, a global challenge that encourages the innovation of technology to empower women. Open to Malaysians between 18-35 years old, the contest offers a whopping Grand Prize of US$25,000 (approx. RM89,000) and a Runner-Up Prize of US$10,000 (approx. RM35,000) to its winners to bring their cutting-edge ideas to life. The ideas must 14

Huawei Honor Celebrates First Anniversary It was something worth celebrating when Huawei Honor turned one last month. Avatar 2 Release Date Pushed To December 2017 The sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time has just been pushed back by a year. Originally scheduled to be released in December 2016, “Avatar 2” will now come out in cinemas in December 2017 instead. Renowned film music composer, James Horner James Cameron on the set of Avatar
who worked closely with James Cameron, the criticallyacclaimed writer, producer and director of “Avatar” touched on the reasons for the postponed release. Cameron is only contracted by the studio to do three sequels. The problem is that he has so much material that he wants to do four sequels to the film! So, he has to rework all his existing materials so that it can fit into “only” three more sequels, namely “Avatar 2”, “Avatar 3”, and “Avatar 4”. Horner revealed that the director is working on cutting down four screenplays into three instead of allowing the series to develop into five movies, as per Cameron’s original vision. Hence, the deferred release of “Avatar 2” by a full year. The following two sequels will correspondingly be pushed back by a year as well, with “Avatar 3” coming out in December 2018 and “Avatar 4” in December 2019.

Jared Leto, the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman and versatile actor in many cult-favourite movie roles (Fight Club, Lord of War, Dallas Buyers Club) has gotten serious and officially cut his signature long locks and bleached his hair in preparation for his role as the infamous “Batman” villain, the Joker in the upcoming “Suicide Squad” movie. As Leto is naturally brunette, the character’s cartoonish green hair wouldn’t show properly. To get the proper vibrant green to show, Leto had to do thorough bleaching. His platinum bleached hair was unveiled to the world at the Paris Fashion Week moments after Kim Kardashian was spotted with a similar bleached look. Whether Kim K’s bleached hair was in preparation for another superhero movie role is yet to be confirmed. The highly anticipated movie is seen as DC’s answer to Marvel’s success with its cinematic universe. Starring alongside Leto will be other Hollywood big hitters such as Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Margot Robbie and Jesse Eisenberg. Directed by David Ayer (Fury, Training Day), “Suicide Squad” is scheduled for release in 2016.

Chong Wei Is Back Wei Malaysia’s top shuttler and former world number one, Lee Chong Wei has been handed a backdated eight-month ban for failing a doping test last year. The good news is his target of winning the gold at the Rio Olympics next year is still alive. The bad news: it’s going to be one helluva mountain to climb. After testing positive for the banned substance dexamethasone in last year’s World Champsionships tournament, which was later determined to be contained within the cordyceps capsules that Lee had been taking, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) handed Lee a provisional suspension from November. The provisional suspension turned into a relatively light backdated eight-month ban in mid-April after BWF’s three-member panel found Lee to be ‘negligent’ with no intent to cheat in the entire doping incident. Lee is eligible to play and compete in tournaments again from May 1st. However, his inactivity since the later part of last year has seen his world ranking drop to 30th, and it would take a herculean effort from him to get back into match-winning form and qualify for next year’s Olympic Games. We wish him all the best in his comeback!
Hamilton In Red? Paddock talk has been rife that Lewis Hamilton, the reigning F1 World Champion is being wooed to join Ferrari in 2016. Hamilton’s continuously delayed signing of a new contract with his current team, Mercedes AMG F1, stretching back to this year’s preseason testing in February has fuelled speculation that the driver would be signing up with the Prancing Horse for the 2016 season instead. given by Hamilton is that a new deal with Mercedes is nearing “99.6 percent” completion, with the delay being attributed to the fact that he has to go through the negotiations entirely on his own. He parted ways with his advisors last year, stating that, “This is my first time negotiating myself and you don’t know how many times I’ve had to read 80 pages – it is so much reading and it is all in lawyer jargon. So it has been quite a pain
in the backside, to be honest.” The prospect of a switch to the Scuderia, partnering up with four-times World Champion Sebastian Vettel is indeed a juicy one for F1 fans, notwithstanding the dominance of his current Mercedes team. Ferrari have enjoyed a resurgent form this year, after enduring a wretched season previously. With their race cars in top form, an internal battle between the two drivers would be, to put it mildly, epic.

Audrey Hepburn’s Oliver Goldsmith Manhattans (1961) The moment the camera panned in to a frontal shot of Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) peering wistfully into the window of a Tiffany’s, two icons were made - Audrey, and her Oliver Goldsmith slight cat-eye shades. They were the perfect cherry on the top to the classic black ensemble she had on, and amplified the legendary actress’s dainty yet sharp features.

For some celebrities, their public personas are incomplete without a pair of shades, and singer Elton John is the perfect example. Since he burst into the scene in the 70s, the flamboyant performer has reportedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on his collection. From palm fronds to neon rims, it seems there’s almost no sunglass design he hasn’t thought of - and rocked. In recent years, however, the boldness of the performer has faded away to reveal a more subdued veteran, who (usually) sports a pair of orange-tinted sunglasses.

Characterised by beautiful rococo stems and big round lenses, these shades immediately captured the hearts of the starry elite, such as Eva Mendes and Gwen Stefani. While it has since been inevitably replaced by fresher designs, fashion watchers would certainly remember this as one of Prada’s more memorable creations.

he Diploma in Fashion Design students of Saito College basked in the spotlight recently with two of their teams’ designs making it into the Top 10 of a Cinderellathemed fashion design competition. Titled “My Princess Moment”, the contest was organised by Disney Studios Malaysia in conjunction with the premiere of the movie “Cinderella” in local theatres. It was open to all fashion schools in Malaysia, and students were allowed to join in groups of either three or five. The response was highly positive with over 100 submissions received, which were then narrowed down to 10. Apart from the honour to design for such a big scale event, finalists were given a big bonus in the form of Swarovski crystals, sponsored by the company itself, to embellish their creations with. Once the finalists were announced, all teams were given three weeks to convert ink to fabric. On the big day itself, two designs, ‘Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo’ and ‘Aphrodite’ were finally presented to the public in Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall. By the end, ‘Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo’ emerged as the 3rd place winner, and was promptly put on proud display along with ‘Aphrodite’ and the rest of the finalists at selected malls with TGV Cinemas outlets. Now, come with us as we take you behind the scenes of the meticulous workmanship that went into these fabulous ball gowns, and feast your eyes on some seriously intricate details.

According to animal rights group PETA, more than 100 million animals suffer and die at the hands of callous brands who feel the need to test on them in order to assess the safety of new chemicals and substances, despite the thousands readily available and certified safe to use. It’s especially heartbreaking if you consider the fact that these animals are probably no different from the pets you and your friends own, yet they are subjected to such treatment due to widespread ignorance and the insatiable demand for the “next best thing”. So what can one do to send a clear message to companies that animal testing is not acceptable? Apart from doing research on which brands to avoid, you can also channel your support behind labels that do not test on animals. Here are five great brands with products that make you look great, sans the guilt.

tarte (Available in Sephora outlets) Established by Maureen Kelly in 1999 in her one bedroom apartment after she discovered a lack of “pure, powerful cosmetics”, tarte has since evolved into a hot beauty pundit favourite, thanks to its beautifully packaged products which are eco-friendly and cruelty-free. Their efforts in creating all-rounder products have certainly paid off, with tarte makeup frequently appearing on the best-of lists of bloggers and Youtubers. One of them is the Amazonian Clay 12-hour blush. True to its name, it is a lasting, highly pigmented blusher that comes in 15 shades to suit every skin tone. Its main component of Amazonian clay helps to control oiliness in and around pores while hydrating skin at the same time. Its (arguably) most famous product of all time, the Naked series, is loved dearly by makeup addicts everywhere for its highly pigmented and highly blendable eyeshadow shades. However, the original Naked palette remains the most sought after, because its warmer bronze tones suit Asian skin better anyway. Another winner from this label is its whimsically packaged Eyeshadow Primer Lotion, which helps your eyeshadow and eyeliner stay in place for the better part of a day, without smudging, creasing or fading.

N
ow that you’ve got the basics of shorts down, how do you wear them? More importantly, how do you know how NOT to wear them? It’s easy to fall into a bottomless pit of faux pas, especially if you’re new to a trend. While there are never hard and fast rules when it comes to style, as everyone’s got their own preferences and individual measurements, we can offer you a few tips that’ll ensure zero embarrassment.
If the Fit Is Right Unless you’re a golfer or suffer from abnormally thin hips, pleated shorts should be avoided at all costs. Bigger hips mean your legs will look thinner by contrast, and that’s not a good look for any guy to have. Boxy bottoms aside, your shorts should also not be too baggy, as a loose fit almost always indicates laziness in the fashion department. Instead, opt for a balanced fit. Your ideal pair should hug, but not suffocate your hips and thighs. Oh, and they should also allow your boys to breathe, if you know what we mean. Don’t: There’s no excuse to be wearing overly short, overly tight shorts ever. Not even Halloween counts. Do: This handsome pair demonstrates the right length that all fashion conscious males should aspire to.
Do: Shorts like these fit well without hugging your thighs to the point of restricting blood flow.
Don’t: Boxy shorts like these could make the most muscular of men look like they’ve never spent a day in the gym.
The Long and Short of It Length matters, and the same goes for shorts. Inches can change your whole look, and make the difference between a smart gentleman and an athlete who’s out of place. The in vogue length nowadays is two to three inches above the knee, meaning your kneecaps should be visible or partially covered while you’re standing. If it goes beyond your knee, your bottoms are no longer in shorts territory. Of course, the length of shorts varies from guy to guy depending on weight and height, so take the time to line up for the changing room!
Colour Me Handsome We say, if you’ve got the guts, rock any damn colour on the chart you want. There are a few fail-proof options though, and they are browns, blacks and blues. Unless they’re splattered with neon paint or feature a look-at-me print, chances are you can wear them with anything you already own. For intermediate level shorts wearers, good alternatives are brighter colours in muted tones, such as brick red or emerald green. Contrast will also help keep your look from going haywire - if you wear a dark pair of shorts, opt for a lighter coloured top, and vice versa. Don’t: It might just be us, but this pair of denim shorts looks too much like a bird excreted all over it.
Do: You can never go wrong with a classic design like this.
Don’t: While there’s nothing particularly wrong about this look, it doesn’t leave quite the same impact as our ‘Do’, on the right...

Do Denim Decently If you’re transitioning from jeans to shorts and don’t quite want to leave denim behind, rest assured, denim shorts are safe. Whether you like light or deep hues of denim doesn’t matter, as long as you don’t go overboard with the ripping and loose threads. If you must have your jeans distressed, make sure it is to a minimum, and never touch a pair whose rips exist at the thigh area. Since denim is usually a statement on its own, it’s advisable to stay away from excessive embellishments and prints too.
Shoe-In With something as casual as shorts, it only makes sense to anchor them with closed-toed shoes, such as boat shoes or loafers. Espadrilles, or plimsolls as they are also known, work well with them too. Overly athletic looking sneakers should be avoided, as it disrupts the laidback flow of your outfit. Opt for monochromatic Converse sneakers instead. As a general rule, you can’t go wrong with closed-toed shoes. Sandals are passable too, although that’s best left for the beach, and should be skipped for classes or dates. As for socks, you can leave those tucked neatly in your drawer until the next trip to the gym. 36

If you’re an R&B fan, you’ve probably heard of Kehlani. She began her career as a dancer in both ballet and modern dancing, but a knee injury forced her to rethink her future. This was when she transitioned to vocal training. She’s never looked back since. Her first album, You Should Be Here is a rather interesting one, because in many of its tracks, you feel her honesty pouring out. This

As of May 2015, Wilder Mind was in the number one spot, proving that British Rock/Indie Folk group Mumford & Sons are still as appealing as they were with their previous two albums. If you’ve never heard of this group before, you’ll definitely want to head to Spotify and search for ‘The Cave’ and ‘Little Lion Man’ to hear what they’re all about. In Wilder Mind, the group still retains their folkish sound, but they’ve added

is particularly so in the song ‘The Letter’, which is a song that features her raw voice and is accompanied by simple tunes from a synthesiser. Another standout song from this album is definitely ‘The Way’, a slow song that you’d want to play when you’re having a candlelight dinner with your significant other. This is a song you can do some slow dancing to, after the dinner. Finally, there’s ‘Bright’, a very inspiring song that serves to lift the spirits of anyone feeling a little down. Accompanied mainly by drum beats and an electric guitar, this song is something you’d want to have on your playlist after you’ve had a long day. Overall, You Should Be Here is a great album that should be in any R&B lover’s collection. There’s a good mixture of slow and intermediate tracks here, making it a great lazy Sunday evening companion.

We’ve given the album a listen and think that ‘Believe’ and ‘Wilder Mind’ are the two most outstanding tracks this time around. The rest of the songs, while good, are somewhat mediocre. The charm that they had in Babel and Sigh No More is still there, though it’s obvious that it’s slightly diminished. In this new album, things are slightly more laid back this time around, making this album the perfect choice when you’re winding down in the evening. In a nutshell, we’d definitely recommend this album to fans of the band, but if this is the first time listening to them, we recommend you start with some of their earlier works.
COOL IT SAM COHEN
Some say that vintage things will never go out of style, and that holds especially true for music. Sam Cohen’s music is a great example of how music from an older generation can still appeal to today’s generation. His first album, titled Cool It, is a really unique album because all of the tracks in this album have a very strong 70s vibe. There are 10 tracks in Cool It, and while all of them are catchy, there are a

Anton Zaslavski, better known as Zedd, has just released his second album. Titled True Colors, this album comes after his Clarity, which was released in 2012. For those of you who have not heard of him, Zedd is actually a rather famous musician. He mainly dabbles with electro house content, but also does a little of progressive house, dubstep, and strangely, classical. Found on True Colors are 11 different
few songs that we really like. The first is ‘Pretty Lights’, which is something that you’ll want to hear when you’re ready to grab a strong cup of coffee and read the newspapers, after you’ve had breakfast on a weekend. Apart from that, there’s ‘The Garden’, which is a song you’d likely want to hear when you’ve got your windows down and you’re driving along the coastline in the evening. In Cohen’s own words, his type of music is described as “psychedelic”. As mentioned above, he takes inspiration from songs from the 70s, which is rather unique in this day and age. It’s definitely refreshing and something that’s worth a listen. Of course, Cohen’s music may not be for everyone, so it’s best to listen to it on Spotify first, before committing to a purchase. If you like songs that sound similar to the Beatles though, you’d most likely love Cohen’s music.

In conclusion, True Colors is a great album for techno lovers. However, you’ll need a good pair of headphones or speakers to truly appreciate this album.

Nico & Vinz It Is! “Nico and Vinz are our names and what we’ve always been called by our friends. We felt that Nico & Vinz was more personal than the band name Envy, and it’s important for us to build a tight and close relationship with our fans through our music and message.”
There was a line in Am I Wrong: “Am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real?” Were there many doubts in the early stages? I will say not from us. I know that I have always believed in dreams ever since I was a kid, but there were doubts from people around us and that sometimes can affect you. If you hear it too many times that “this is not going to work”, it might affect you; no matter how strong you are, it affects you. We had a lot of people around us who have been a bit sceptical to our dream of course and that’s why we wrote that song actually. Am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real? Am I wrong for thinking this can happen? Why am I wrong? Why is this so weird for me to think this way? So, that is the foundation of the song and we just inspire people and encourage people to follow their hearts, follow their dreams and their goals and do what they wanted to do. We have been through the same thing so somebody else can do the same thing.
The song has a great video for it, who came up with it? The story behind that video is that we made two videos for this song. We made a low budget one in Norway. It was good, but it wasn’t it. We felt that it wasn’t good enough for that song. It deserved a little bit more. So we sat there and we thought, why don’t we put in money from our own pockets and really make something that we can be proud of because we knew that the song is there, we just needed something to complement it. Hence, the feeling you get to the song is even more. So we took a risk here, go for it, we went down to Besiana, shot a video. We thought if we were going down to Africa, let’s make it a real cool video. And at the same time, let’s show Africa from a different point of view from what’s shown on TV typically. Let’s show the positive things, the smiles there, let us show that.
You’re both from African descent, have you been to Africa before shooting this video? Yes, definitely. Vinz is from Ghana and my father is from Ivory Coast. Vinz has been to Ghana many times for vacation and I had been
to Ivory Coast many times. I have lived there for one year when I was seventeen. So yeah, we are very close to our culture and heritage. The Africa we know is so much more than what’s in the media and headlines. There’s so much joy, so much music and so many colours and that is what we wanted to show in the video. We had a statement to make; that Africa is not only about poverty, or about hunger, or about civil wars or whatever. You are working on a new album now. Looking back at the previous album, is there a clear distinction musically between the albums? At the time when we were doing that album, we were experimenting. We were trying to figure out who we were. We came from a more hip-hop background and that really coloured off into that album. We were rapping a lot in addition to the singing. Once it was done and released, we were happy with it, but we realised that it is not what’s going to break us into the heart of the whole world. It is not what’s going to “blow up” internationally. Then you need something that is unique, special and really personal. We went through that process, trying to figure out what we are and who we are, bringing all of that together. The only way we can be something out here is if we are different. The only way to be different is to be us. That is how the whole mentality started, like we have to be us. SID: Smooth Grooves Get Personal Taking the local music scene by storm, SID is an incredibly impressive ensemble of talent. This four-piece band carries an amazing groove that mashes jazz and funk with a fresh pop sound. It all unfolded when the band was granted with a golden opportunity to perform for a gig back in November 2013. Despite not having an official band, Murshid managed to gather Ben and Seng Kiat to hop on the bandwagon. That was how the band was born. That was the beginning to many more jamming sessions, as the band also spawned original tracks by making music independently. Collectively, the trio had been playing alongside several electric bassists until December 2014, which was when Cheryl officially joined in as the bassist. Yes, you guessed it right, Murshid who is the lead vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter also happens to be the captain of the team! Beneath his soft-spoken charisma, Murshid is known to be witty and eccentric. Despite being in a position of responsibility, he still manages to charm the rest of the members with his accommodating personality. There’s also Ben, who plays the guitar in the band. Known for his wide appreciation for a variety of music, he never fails to adapt his playstyle across different genres. Ben is especially resourceful in churning out suggestions for songs to add to the band’s playlist. SID also consists of Seng Kiat, the band’s drummer and Cheryl, the bassist. Seng Kiat’s 40

passion for drumming dates all the way back when he used to gather musicians from the School of Architecture in Taylor’s University for jamming sessions. Coincidentally, that was where he met Ben and Murshid as well. Perpetually enthusiastic for music-making, Seng Kiat never shies away from voicing out his opinions. As for Cheryl, she’s a bassist who has a background in audio engineering. The band frequently benefits from her knowledge and unique grasp of music and the industry. Both she and Seng Kiat are deemed to be the more assertive members of the band.
Music Conversation SID is actually a connotation of Murshid’s name. Previously known as “The Abangs”, Murshid decided the band should be renamed (because there’s now a female member onboard). As the most committed member of the band, the rest had no qualms about naming it after Murshid. “Because of this, we are granted the green card to blame him for everything,” giggled Cheryl. Interestingly, the members of the band are mostly self-taught in music. Unwilling to be bounded by theories, Murshid who was initially a classically trained pianist decided to bring his lessons to a halt after his Grade 4 examination. As part of his intention to explore, He then ventured into more contemporary styles. Seng Kiat first picked up some drum lessons for six months in 2008 before finally purchasing his own drum kit. Since then, he has
been learning on his own. Similarly, Cheryl first signed herself up for a class where she spent her first paycheck on a guitar master class with the renowned composer and musical maestro, Az Samad (the son of our legendary Malaysian poet, A. Samad Said) before discovering her true love for bass. As for Ben, he owes it to Google and Ultimate-Guitar. Of course, he poured in a lot of effort in experimenting on his own as well. Drawing influences from a number of different genres, the band taps into a mixture of inspiration from Jamie Cullum, Tokyo Jihen, Nile Rodgers, Allen Stone, The Beatles to John Bonham. When it comes to the creative process of music-making, the band strives to approach every song as one-of-a-kind. “There really isn’t a specific routine that we BEN

stick by”, added Seng Kiat. Thus far, most of the original songs are written by Murshid. However, as of late, the band has been working together in producing a couple of new tracks. Generally, everyone plays a role by contributing in his or her own field of expertise. Murshid is notorious for his creative knack in drawing the crowd and is more technically proficient in playing the keyboard while Cheryl is knowledgeable in providing exceptional ideas for musical arrangements. A perfectionist at heart, Seng Kiat also serves as the quality control for the band. He never rests on his laurels and is never afraid to experiment for a better beat. Throughout the years, the arrangement of their music has also evolved. Instead of merely playing according to chords, they band has now taken the challenge to experiment more with new instrumentations and arrangements.

Pop, funk and jazz are just some of the words to illustrate the track. SID is also available for private events, weddings and dinners. Coincidentally, as the sole composer of lyrics in the band, the themes also naturally revolve around Murshid’s life. For instance, ‘Tryin’ is all about the coffee shop game experienced by almost all males when approaching a woman in a café. ‘Sad, Sad World’ on the other hand mainly depicts the harsh reality of the world, while ‘Project C’ is a track that aims to empower youngsters in taking charge of their own life. Nonetheless, their songs will change with the times. “Not every song is going to be about a girl, especially now that Cheryl is here to help us out,” Ben chuckled. CHERYL

Live Gigs The most significant milestone to date is when the band was featured at Merdekarya (an epicentre for the local arts scene; from young singer-songwriters to poets). Unlike other live gigs out there, Merdekarya is one that relies heavily on the fan base of the featured act instead of counting on the venue to bring in the crowd. To their astonishment, the venue was flooded with SID’s supporters. “Everyone came and we were stoked that it was a full house. People even had to sit on the floor as there weren’t enough chairs. The best part was when they sang along to our originals!” added Murshid.
Down the Road with Music In the long run, SID seeks to inspire the love for music in their listeners. It is also equally essential for the team to continue producing genuine music while embracing music as their very personal medium of expression. Of course, the challenge lies in translating these personal expressions to an international platform. As for the moment, SID is committed in doing whatever it takes to increase their exposure through open mics, features and perhaps, a few private gigs along the way.
C+: What are your hopes for the local music industry? SID: We’d hope to see more people supporting homegrown music. C+: Describe your music in three or four words. SID: Sexy-time pop. C+: What advice do you have for people who want to take their passion in music one step further? Murshid: You have to be passionate, patient and respectful towards your fellow musicians. Cheryl: Always make genuine music. Seng Kiat: It doesn’t matter which stage you are at, whether you’re practicing alone or performing with other musicians, ALWAYS play for the love of music. 0% of BIGBANG’s 2015 World Tour ‘MADE’ tickets were sold on the first day of ticket sales. There were about 1,000 fans who queued up at Quill City Mall on the 17th of May to purchase their tickets! There were even some fans who started queuing up nine days before the tickets went on sale. Rock Zone A and Cat 4 tickets were sold out completely within hours, even before the online purchase that opened at 5pm on Ticketcharge on the same day. Approximately 6,000 fans were waiting on TicketCharge to purchase their tickets online as fast as possible. As you may be aware, BIGBANG is travelling to 15 countries for their 2015 World Tour ‘MADE’ and Malaysia is one of the countries on the tour list. Rainbow, the seven-member South Korean girl group is back on the boards after over a year and a half. This sixtrack mini album is different than their previous album, Over The Rainbow. Gone are the colourful costumes and sugarysweet cute songs. Let’s see how they will shine on this album after the change. Kicking things off is the mid-tempo tragic romance style track, ‘Bad Boys Cry’ that showcases Jaekyung’s powerful vocals and Woori’s skilful rap. ‘Black Swan’ is a definite departure from their previous album. The melody is rather dark and it matches the song title pretty well. We really enjoyed this song and the insertion of the piano at the end of the song is perfectly done. We believe that every girl has their own fictional crush. And ‘Mr. Lee’ is exactly the song that sings about it. Smooth, sweet and airy vocals combined with a funky tune encapsulate this song. Although there aren’t any surprises here, the song’s quality remains and it’s still nice to listen to. If you’re looking for a pretty ballad, then you should listen to ‘A Little More’. It’s a breathy and emotional ballad that makes you feel closer to yourself. This is the album that marks the new sound of Rainbow, while still retaining their style. F.T. Island, short for Five Treasure Island is a five-member South Korean pop-rock male band that’s considered as South Korea’s first instrumental idol band. I Will is their fifth Korean language studio album with 11 tracks. As usual, they have composed and wrote the songs by themselves. Let’s check out what they have in store for us this time. The album opens with a quiet piano piece with some beautiful strings in it. ‘Intro’ is a rather pretty music-box like song that we would love to have the complete version of. Stormy guitar leads, driving drums and elevated vocals that will make you get excited are what you will hear from ‘PRAY’. It’s also an amazing piece of hard rock that makes you sing and dance along. We fell in love with ‘Black Chocolate’ on the first listen. The powerful drums and soaring vocals together with the satisfying chorus is what we loved about it. Make no mistake, ‘Black Chocolate’ is our favourite song on the entire album. If you’re a rock music fan, then this is the album that you don’t want to miss. It’s a solid rock album that compiles a number of head-banging rock tunes with F.T. Island’s powerful vocals and perfect drumming skills. It’s an impressive and refreshing album from them. Highly recommended.

What awaits us is not Block B, but their sub-unit, BASTARZ. The sub-unit comprises three members of Block B, who are B-Bomb, U-Kwon and P.O., and they have just released a sixtrack mini album. Although Zico is not part of BASTARZ, he has produced BASTARZ’s title track, ‘Conduct Zero’. We can’t wait to see how interesting Conduct Zero will be with this trio. Eager to show us what BASTARZ is, they have packed a number of fun into the three-minute long title track, ‘Conduct Zero’. This song just sucks us into it. We kept replaying it as we were writing this out. It’s a really awesome song that shows that BASTARZ is just as great as Block B. Contrasting the wild and fun elements is their title track, ‘Charlie Chaplin’ which is a smooth song with acoustic guitars, sweet rap and funk-pop background music. It’s another marvellous song that’ll get your head nodding for more. If you’re looking for a catchy and danceable song from them, then you should listen to ‘Thief’. It’s a pretty naughty and fun song to listen to as you can feel how mischievous they are throughout the song. Overall, it is an outstanding debut with a lot of great elements. And yes, they are definitely as great as Block B, making this album worth owning.
Originally signed with JYP Entertainment, Jung San, better known as San E, is a South Korean hip-hop rapper. However, he left the company in April 2013 and signed with Brand New Music afterwards. And now, he is back with his first nine-track album, The Boy Who Cried Wolf. This album has also features a number of great artists on it. We love Jung In’s sweet vocals in ‘She’s’ and the contrast that San E’s rapping make. This soon became one of our favourite songs of the entire album. Both of their voices blend with each other well, making it an unconventional song. ‘I Deserve It’ is a pretty interesting and fun rap song. There are a number of different raps styles in this song and surprisingly they go together pretty well. The standout track on the entire album is definitely ‘Me You’. It’s a very cute, fun and creative song. Through this song, you can hear guest singer Baek Ye Rin’s sweet and lovely vocals. This may not be an album for everyone, but if you’re a San E or rap fan, then this is an album right up your alley.

t was no April Fool’s hoax. Post April 1st and it’s a brave new era for every Ali, Ah Kau and Mutu in Malaysia. Overnight, their spending power had shrunk (at the minimum) by – you guessed it – 6%, courtesy of the newly implemented Goods & Services Tax (GST). For the majority of the country’s struggling students such as yourself, who are still highly dependent on mommy and daddy’s charity, the implications are grave to say the least. So how do you survive? Fortunately for you, we here at Campus Plus have compiled a few tips for you to ease into the new regime/reality and stretch your already meagre-valued ringgit. Disclaimer: Some of the tips/suggestions are firmly tongue-in-cheek stuff. Meaning some can pakai while others are utter rubbish. Reader’s discretion is advised. Practise them at your own risk.

Up the Domino’s Pizza consumption. They are not passing on the GST to customers. Waste not, want not. Ensure you clean up every drop of rice and food morsel on your plate at every meal. Recycle or recreate your old junk. Be creative. For instance, reuse old exam papers as toilet paper or use your old textbooks (if you’re not selling them off, but why aren’t you??!) as exercise props or paperweights. Use your smartphone until it dies. Resist the urge to change it every time a new model or variant pops up in the market. For the ladies, this also covers bags, shoes, clothes, fashion accessories… you get the idea. Buy in bulk. If you have the storage space, buy things direct from wholesalers en masse. Become a savvy discount hunter. Hunt for bargains and good deals on all your necessary stuff. Less Starbucks coffee, more self-made Nescafe 3-in-1. Keep the receipts of your purchases and compare the prices of products across different retailers. Blacklist and report retailers/ traders who indiscriminately raise prices. Cook and dine in more often. Pool resources with your housemates when buying raw ingredients for cooking, and come up with a duty roster for cooking and cleaning duties. For those of you living with papa and mama, good for you. Every meal is free. Just make sure you do your part by cleaning up and thanking them. Also, rule (6) above applies. Exercise in nature. If die, die still must go to the gym, opt for pay per use gyms. Or set up your own home gym by recycling stuff into gym equipment (tip #7).

Attention food junkies! During your mission to splurge on junk food, bear in mind to only go for stuff that you find less satisfying and gratifying (yes, if you are a fan of premium brands, we are sorry but you’ll have to downgrade). This way, you’ll still get to satisfy your cravings while we guarantee that you’ll eat less because it’s not your favourite brand. If you happen to be a fashion conscious individual, we assure you that GST will not get in your way. This is how: educate yourself on the Return Policy of every department store out there. You would be surprised to find that many stores actually offer a refund of cash within 30 days of your purchase (terms and conditions apply). Yes, you get the gist of it; basically this is the only way you get to recycle new clothes without having to actually pay for them! Nice. On the flip side, generate additional moolah for yourself by thinking of ways that you can make more money. Get a part-time job, freelance for something or moonlight as a bartender or barista. What is it?
Basically, it’s a consumption tax that’s imposed on goods and services at every stage of its supply chain, from the initial manufacturing stage to the end retail stage. Also known as value-added tax (VAT) in some countries, GST is based on the “value-added” concept to avoid duplication in tax collected. It is not a new form of tax, but replaces Malaysia’s existing Sales and Service Tax (SST).

What are the goods and services that are charged with the GST?
GST is charged over three categories of supplied goods and services: Standard-rated supplies – All goods and services under this group will be charged 6% GST and it will be added to the invoice price. Zero-rated supplies – No GST will be charged on these taxable supplies. Businesses can claim back their input tax incurred in acquiring these supplies, so accordingly, they can charge GST at zero rate to the consumer. Most food items and basic services fall under this category. Exempt supplies – These are non-taxable supplies that are not subject to GST. Businesses cannot claim back their input tax incurred in acquiring these supplies, hence they cannot charge the output tax to the consumer.

irmala was 24 when she discovered that she was six weeks pregnant. An immigrant from Nepal, she and her husband had a hard time making ends meet. She worked at a local factory while her husband had a job as a security guard. For fear of losing her job, she decided to have an abortion. Nina, on the other hand, was 23 when she found out she was pregnant. Just about to complete her tertiary education, she was four months pregnant when she attended her graduation ceremony. She decided to keep her baby. Note: The names of the individuals in this article have been changed to protect their privacy
Lawfully Speaking. . . For Nirmala, the threat of losing her job was very real. After all, there were many others just like her, waiting for a slot in the assembly line. To make matters worse, if her employers found
out that she was pregnant, she could be slapped with a hefty fine for breaking contract and be sent back home. You see, a child that’s born in Malaysia should automatically be offered citizenship, but there are legal barriers that prevent this from happening, but a discussion on this matter digresses from what we’ve been talking about, which is abortion. Back on topic, Nirmala was arrested and sentenced to 12 months in prison for obtaining a legal abortion following a raid at the clinic; an act that garnered prominent attention from human rights groups from around the world. Swiftly after her arrest, she was charged, convicted and imprisoned under Section 315 of the Penal code for allegedly preventing a child from being born alive. The question we’d like to pose however, is whether her decision to perform an abortion ethical or otherwise? Malaysia’s official stand regarding abortion is that it is illegal, and both parties, i.e. the mother, as well as the (abortion) service provider can be charged according to the Penal Code. There is an exception however - if a registered doctor determines that the baby is life-threatening, or could cause permanent mental and physical injury to the mother, an abortion could be performed. Apart from that exception, any other reasons for an abortion is considered illegal. Yes, even a rape case does not warrant a green card for an abortion. Nonetheless, if the pregnant mother of a rape case develops severe mental distress and is recognised by a practising doctor to be
detrimental to her health, it will then be legal to perform an abortion. The rules regarding abortion in Malaysia resemble a ball of entangled threads. Under Section 312 of the Penal code, a registered doctor may perform an abortion if the pregnancy poses critical threats to the pregnant woman. However, here is where the conflict lies. Under Section 315, a woman is also susceptible to charges for preventing a foetus from being born alive. Certainly, abortion is a taboo in our fairly conservative society. However, considering the rise in baby dumping cases, could abortion be a more acceptable alternative? Despite a staggering figure of 90,000 abortions performed annually (as reported from the National Population and Family Development Board two years ago), abortion remains a persistent headache as silence continues to linger around it. It is no surprise that teen pregnancies have become an increasingly worrying trend. A glance from the Ministry of Health’s Teen Pregnancy Statistics Manual recorded 18,652 and 18,874 of teen pregnancies during 2011 and 2012 respectively. To give you a better illustration, that would translate to about 51 teen pregnancies in a day. Yes, in one day. More worryingly, about three out of every 10 teen births occur out of wedlock.

The Reality of Abortion In layman terms, an abortion is defined as the removal of an embryo or foetus from the uterus at a stage of pregnancy before it is capable of independent survival (500g or 22 weeks gestation). Not a procedure any woman would happily go through, an abortion involves tonnes of pain, often times regret, and more often than not, a sense of moral uncertainty. However, it is a means for a woman to protect her body, mind and for some, her livelihood. Regardless of the decision and reasons behind it, dealing with an unexpected pregnancy requires both rational thought and a leap of faith.
Too Young For Motherhood Jessica was only 19 when she found out she was pregnant. It happened towards the end of her first year in university. In shock and incredibly nervous, her thoughts were all over the place. She placed the blame on herself for being naïve and careless in trusting her ex-boyfriend too much to the point of engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse. As for Sabrina, she was somehow in a state of denial. When her period failed to arrive on time, she didn’t give it much thought since her menstrual cycle had always been irregular. Week after week went by and Sabrina kept 48

telling herself it must just be a delay and that her “condition” had to do with her diet instead. However, her constant nausea and vomiting persisted to a point that Sabrina was compelled to get herself tested. Two stripes appeared on her pregnancy test - meaning she was pregnant. Hoping that the test was inaccurate, she was completely flabbergasted and immediately informed her boyfriend about it. They had no choice but to give up on the baby.
It Was Break the Law, or Breakdown Entirely A couple of hours after finding out she was pregnant, Jessica found herself in a clinic. She was going to exercise her option on motherhood. Alone in the cold office, an unexpected ambivalence arose in her, as she realised that the only company she had was that of her microscopic foetus. Before she could change her mind though, a nurse approached
her and told her to clear her bowel movement before the procedure could be done. When that was done, she was given anaesthetics and when she awoke, the procedure was done. The only thing she remembered was the faint sound of a vacuum and a gentle suction action. Till this day, her family remains in the dark over the entire matter. Similarly, Sabrina kept her family out of her decision. Along with her boyfriend, she consulted a female doctor from a local clinic for a pregnancy test. As expected, the ultrasound proved the existence of a foetus. Since abortion is illegal, Sabrina was hesitant in voicing out her intention. To her relief, the doctor voluntarily suggested her to terminate the pregnancy and before she knew it, she had an arrangement to visit a hospital for the procedure. For her, it was very much similar to a regular hospital visit. Right after she changed, Sabrina was given anaesthesia and was unconscious throughout the entire procedure.
A Heartfelt Plea to Other Women
Love at First Sight
Here is a note from Jessica for those who are contemplating abortion: Bear in mind that there are always other women to speak to. They are the people who know what it was like and how it feels. Always talk to someone about it (be it your partner or your close friends) and never undergo this alone or the consequences WILL haunt you later on. Think hard, avoid making a rash decision and be certain of what you really want to do. As for Sabrina, she believes it largely depends on the individual’s situation. “If she is independent and financially stable, I do not see a reason why the baby should be aborted. However, if circumstances do not allow for the baby to grow up in a decent environment, perhaps it’s best to think of the alternative.”
As cliché as it sounds, it was love at first sight that drove Nina to immediately fall head over heels for Tom, a foreigner who was studying at a local university. Soon after, they began dating exclusively, although they never officially labelled themselves as a couple. They engaged in a relatively active and unprotected sexual relationship. Six months down the road, she discovered that she was pregnant. To her own surprise, Nina reacted calmly over the news while her closest girlfriends were panicking on her behalf. “I wasn’t worried about being pregnant, I was more worried as to how my parents were going to react and most importantly, how I was even going to break the news to them,” Nina recalls.
Bearing the Responsibility
He Left
On the other side of the scale, we spoke to Nina, who believes that abortion wasn’t an option at all. Nina was 23 when she found out she was pregnant. This is her story.
Following a lengthy discussion, the two arrived at a mutual agreement. The plan was for Tom to stay with Nina until the baby was safely delivered. Unfortunately, all hell broke loose
A Pain That Lasts a Lifetime For many of the women who undergo this procedure, the memory and pain attached to it remains for the rest of their lives. After the abortion, Jessica had some trouble coping mentally. For a few years, she admitted to beating herself up for not keeping the baby. Feeling utterly worthless, she could not forgive herself for committing such an unjustifiable act. Slowly, happiness and love ceased to exist in her dictionary as she was increasingly haunted by a sense of unworthiness. Flashbacks of the abortion would regularly pay her visits, to the point where she would break down and cry at the thought of her actions. For several years, she was plagued with the fear of any basic physical contact. As much as she strived to move past her mistakes, Jessica admits that she is still thinking about her unborn child and believes that there will never be a day where she will be able to completely get over it. As for Sabrina, she is overcome with remorse and guilt whenever she thinks about her unborn child. “I feel sorry for the baby. Until today, I am still keeping the picture of the ultrasound scan in my room. I even named the baby,” Sabrina admitted.
The Timing Just Wasn’t Right Both Jessica and Sabrina admitted that they would still arrive at the same conclusion even if they were given a second chance to relive that particular moment of their lives. JUNE 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

ones include “She deserves it” and that the child is being raised by an “easy” woman. She even had to be reviewed before being allowed to resume her teaching in church, as the members of the board deemed it inappropriate.
It Didn’t Go as Planned, But the Show Must Go On Despite all the hurdles, Nina revealed that she couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out. Surrounded by family and friends who are not only loving but also supportive, she had more than ample supply of necessities during her child’s first year. Nina even had strangers who would come up to her to offer help should the need arise.
It’s a Never-Ending Journey of Self-Discovery that evening when Tom spoke to his parents about the situation. Within the same week, his parents forced him to return to his home country. Nina reluctantly accepted the fact that she had to face the pregnancy without Tom.
Abortion Was Never an Option Growing up in a staunch Catholic family, Nina has never once considered the thought of terminating her pregnancy. A pro-life supporter, Nina insisted that she would have still carried her pregnancy to term even if it was conceived out of rape.
You Bear What You Sow Ironically, Nina admitted that her Catholic background did not hinder her from having “fun”. She was well aware of the possible outcomes from her choices and was always ready to follow through the consequences. “I just had to man up and be prepared to deal with the aftermath,” Nina added. She first told the news to her brother, and naturally he was completely shocked by the news. Nonetheless, he promised to be there when she was ready to break the news to their parents. Soon after, the two sat down to reveal the news to their mother.
The Cracks Begin to Appear The toughest revelation was to include her dad in the loop. When they finally did, her dad could not find a way to accept it and completely blew his top. Within two months, Nina witnessed her family crumble before her eyes. Her dad merely treated her like a tenant, while constantly pressuring her 50

for an abortion. As the woman in the family, her mother did her best to keep the family intact. It was difficult; she was trying to keep everyone hanging on a fine thread. “I think it affected my father the most but I was really at my wits end, too!” Nina revealed. She knew it was the last straw when her mother, a staunch Catholic herself, gave in and requested her to terminate her pregnancy.
Alone Seemingly at a dead end, Nina contacted a youth counsellor and before she knew it, she was placed in a shelter with several other nuns. Located several states away from her home, the shelter was where Nina stayed for the duration of her pregnancy, unbeknownst to everyone save for her immediate family and closest girlfriends. Indeed, it was one of the toughest periods of her life. It was during this period when she finally began asking if she had the means to keep her child, or whether adoption was for the best. “If I kept the child, would I be able to support the child financially, or would it completely tear my family apart? If I gave my child up for adoption, would I be able to live with myself not knowing the whereabouts of my own flesh and blood?” ponders Nina. In the end, it was the counselling sessions that paved the way in mending her family ties and guiding her to her final decision.
Judged Inevitably, Nina’s story was learnt by many among her community. With this knowledge, many passed judgment. The most common
All of Nina’s plans now revolve around her child’s daily routine and her future. There is no more late nights out or splurges at shopping or vacation plans. It’s a definite change of lifestyle. Occasionally, she does wonder if she is worthy of being her child’s mother or if she’s providing a quality life to her child. Most of the time, Nina brushes it off by being stronger and more resilient knowing that a tiny being would need to draw strength from her. Being a single mother, people often remember that she is a “mother” but overlook that she is “single”.

Hope is a Powerful Medicine For those who are faced with an unplanned pregnancy, here is Nina’s two cents: In any circumstances, please consider counselling in order to be informed on both sides of the coin. Do realise that there are always other options. In fact, support is all around you, even in places, people or moments you least expect. There is always counselling support or shelter. Even if it means isolating yourself in discomfort for just a few months to deliver, bear in mind that you’re also saving someone’s entire life in return. Remind yourself that while you may not want the child, others are trying their utmost best to have one and are more than willing to adopt an unwanted child.
Two Sides to Every Coin Where do you stand when it comes to the issue of abortion? On one side there are those who call themselves “pro-choice” and who regard intentional abortion as acceptable in some circumstances. On the other side are those who recognise themselves as “pro-life” and believe that human life begins at conception. If abortion is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being, does it mean a foetus’
right to life outweighs the mother’s right to control her own body? Well, we will leave you to ponder upon this controversial topic that will always rest within a grey area lacking an absolute right or wrong judgment call.

For many music lovers, a good pair of headphones is defined by its ability to accurately reproduce audio. It’s up for debate, but many believe that the best way for accurate reproduction is to have a pair of headphones that are neutral, i.e. they emphasise neither bass nor highs or mids. The Philips Fidelio X2 is perhaps one of the most neutral headphones in the market today. Learn more about it in this review. Design In terms of design, the X2 looks somewhat similar to the Philips Fidelio L2. It’s just a bigger brother who goes to the gym, and has a little bit more muscle here and there. The X2 has a wider headband and a headrest that gives it more bulk, but these elements also serve to increase comfort by a significant amount. It’s also worth mentioning that the X2 has a removable cable system, which makes it easier to replace the cables in the event it gets damaged.
Features The reason why the X2 looks similar to the L2 is because both make use of an acoustic open-back architecture. The L2 actually uses a semi open-back design, but they’re essentially the same thing. They allow ambient sound to “leak” into the earcups, which usually enhances the soundstage and make it seem as if there’s a live performance going on. Another thing that may be of interest is that the X2 makes use of 50mm drivers, which are capable of reproducing a wide range of audio. In the drivers, Philips used a layered motion control
diaphragm. Described as a multi-layered polymer diaphragm that encases a layer of damping gel, this bit of technology helps to absorb excessive bass and highs. In summary, this technology helps to ensure a sound profile that’s more natural.
Audio Quality As I’ve mentioned early on in this review, the X2 is the most naturalsounding pair of headphones I’ve had the pleasure of testing so far. In songs with a little bit more acoustic instruments, the X2 does a good job at keeping everything well-balanced. It also handles more exciting music like rock, without any problems.
Conclusion The Philips Fidelio X2 is indeed an outstanding pair of headphones. Capable of accurately reproducing audio, this pair of headphones is easy to recommend. They’re also extremely comfortable, so you can wear them for hours without any problems. Pair it with a good digital-to-analogue converter and you’re all set to enter audio nirvana.

For some, doodling has become an art form that goes beyond creating simple sketches in textbooks. Thanks to the 3Doodler, this art form can now be taken to the next level – 3D creations. Find out more about the 3Doodler in this review! PROS:
Design As you would have expected, the 3Doodler looks just like a pen. It’s pretty comfortable to hold for long periods of time, so there are no complaints in the ergonomics department. Take a look at the front of the 3Doodler and you’ll find an interchangeable nozzle, which allows you to determine the shape of the strands. The nozzles are sold separately however, so you’ll have to fork out a little bit more for that extra creative freedom.
Functionality To begin creating 3D doodles, you insert strands of plastic cylinders of different colours into the pen. Inside the pen are heating elements that quickly melt the plastic into paste. The paste is then fed through the nozzle, and all that’s left to do is for you to doodle away. The 3Doodler is a great tool for when you want to create 3D sketches. It’s incredibly easy to use, and is definitely a lot of fun, especially if you’re someone who loves to create art. However, to function properly, the 3Doodler requires a significant amount of power for its heating element. Because of this, you’ll only be able to use the pen when it’s plugged into a power socket. There is the option to use the JetPack, a portable power source, but it’s unclear if this device will be brought in. 56

It takes a little getting used to, but once you’ve got the hang of it, you’re well on your way to creating amazing 3D art! A quick trip to the 3Doodle community website and you’ll find dozens of creative ideas.
Conclusion Fun and easy to use, the 3Doodler is something that every art lover should have. It takes a while to create more advanced 3D art, but when you successfully hold a complete piece of art in your hands, the sense of satisfaction is high indeed.

A Wooden Affair JVC HA-FX750
When it comes to speakers, a housing made of wood is usually preferred because of its natural ability to reflect sound and minimise distortion. JVC now has a range of in-ear earphones that make use of wood, for unchallenged audio quality. Meet the JVC HA-FX750.
The best way to appreciate something like the FX750 is to play music with a lot of instruments. Symphonic tracks and classical music are the first to come to mind, and when tested with the symphonic version of ‘Amaranth’ from Nightwish, the experience is truly a great one. There’s plenty of detail and clarity, and the soundstaging is excellent. To get a better idea of how the FX750 handles different types of music, I loaded Bon Jovi’s ‘Have A Nice Day’, where the bass was emphasised quite a bit. Overall though, rock is handled nicely by the FX750. After trying the FX750 with other songs, the overall conclusion is that the FX750 sounds superb, with a slight tendency to emphasise the lower frequencies.
Conclusion Design A couple of months back, we did a review on the FX750’s bigger brother, the FX850. Put them side-by-side and you likely won’t be able to tell them apart. The only way to do so is to look for the removable cable system that’s available on the FX850. Apart from that, both look identical, with beautifully crafted wooden housings and a little bit of golden trimmings. In short, the FX750 looks gorgeous.
Features The FX750 is part of JVC’s series of earphones that make use of wood for both the housing and inner diaphragm. The wood in the inner diaphragm helps to “diffuse” the sound, so that things sound a little more natural. In no way does the wood reduce overall volume. Apart from that, it’s equipped with the same acoustic hybrid damper technology as
the FX850. With this technology in place, the FX750 apparently is able to reproduce a wider audio range by further minimising the amount of vibration. The vibration reduction features doesn’t stop there. JVC also included a tiny wooden ring that’s fitted towards the rear of the housing. This ring helps to absorb unwanted vibrations and helps to redirect audio in a predictable manner. To top it all, JVC used wood as the housing, not only for aesthetic purposes, but as the final vibration reduction material. So what does all the vibration reduction help to achieve? Put simply, it allows the FX750 to faithfully reproduce the sound as it was intended to be heard. Needless to say, you’ll be able to hear the slightest chime and even the lightest tap on the snares. The audio will also sound very natural, as if you were listening to a live performance.
In a nutshell, if you love slow songs with a lot of vocals, then the FX750 is for you. It’s a little bit pricey, but it’s well worth the investment. It also looks great, so if you’re a serious music appreciator, this pair of earphones is the next best thing than going for in-ear monitors (IEMs).

Driving on Guoliang Tunnel Road in China
This is one for the seasoned drivers out there with lion hearts. Nicknamed ‘the road that tolerates no mistakes’, this steep winding path was carved into the lofty Taihang Mountains in Henan, China for five years by villagers who needed a ‘safer’ access route to the Guoliang village. Since China opened its doors in 2000, the road has become popular with tourists for its amazing views of the majestic mountains. Naturally, the path is only accessible by car. It is fraught with twists and turns, with ‘windows’ carved into it for passengers to see out into the surrounding scenery. Drivers should only attempt this with optimum sleep the night before, as manoeuvring the road requires great focus. Also, try not to come here during rainy weather so as to avoid slipping and nasty accidents.

Skiing with yaks in India
Yaks, or domesticated ones at least, are gentle creatures, but in the presence of their favourite snack they become great companions in snow skiing. What exactly do we mean? In the winter at Manali, India, which is about two hours from Delhi, Tibetan Peter Dorje invites extreme sports enthusiasts to the snowy mountains, where they will stand at the foot of a large slope, tethered to a rope and wearing skis. That’s not all - they will also be holding a bucket of pony nuts. Upon being signalled, the intrepid skiers will then shake the bucket and drop the pony nuts, drawing the attention of the yak and prompting it to charge excitedly down the slope. What happens next is a literal catapult to the top of the slope as the rope on the pulley works in a circular motion and shoots yak and man to opposing positions. Manali becomes a winter wonderland from the end of December through to January, so it’s best to plan your trip for these months. Being a popular tourist location, it is accessible by bus, train and plane.

And we’re not talking dormant ones, either. One of Bali’s most popular climbs is at Mount Batur, and it is considered to be the most active volcano there. Despite a high occurrence of mild to moderate explosions, and lava being emitted from time to time, the relatively easy hike to the summit makes it a hit with tourists. With a guide on your side, most hikers with decent levels of fitness should be able to reach the peak within 1-2 hours. Try not to go without one, as you might meet with guides from the local town who will do all they can to hinder your journey. Despite the comparatively short climb, you can still expect amazing views that stretch for a far distance, especially if you are willing to rise early to catch the sunrise. If you’re lucky, your guide might even cook you an egg boiled in volcanic steam before you make your way down. Mount Batur is accessible all year round, and only an hour’s drive from Ubud, one of Bali’s most visited towns.

Conquering jungle canopy obstacles in Malaysia
Sometimes you don’t need to go that far to find adventure. Sweaty palm-inducing action is available right here in Shah Alam, Selangor where Skytrex Adventures is. Said to be the first of its kind here, visitors can fly, swing, glide and dangle from tree to tree as they make their way from one aerial hurdle to another. There are three circuits with varying levels of difficulty, with ‘Extreme Challenge’ being the most heart-thumping. It consists of 34 obstacles and takes two and a half to three hours to complete. If you have a fear of heights or trust issues, this might be the cure you seek. Getting there is a piece of cake as it is only a 40 minute drive from the city centre of Kuala Lumpur and is accessible via many highways.

ith June being the month of Father’s Day, there seems to be no better time than now to up your trivia game and learn a little something about daddies around the world. And since we’re on that subject, how about the Aka Pygmy people of Central Africa? Pygmies are ethnic groups known for their unusually short height, no taller than 150cm to be exact. While their stature is below average, their parenting skills, however, are a force to be reckoned with. That was what Professor Barry Hewlett discovered when he journeyed from the

comforts of Washington State University to the untamed lands of Congo, where the Aka people reside. During his stay with the tribe, he unearthed a world where mothers and fathers play unprecedented roles in bringing up their children. Here are some of the reasons that make the parents of Aka so unique.
Fathers = Mothers, Mothers = Fathers Most of us see our dads as the primary or sole breadwinners, and mums as the caretakers, right? In the Aka tribe, all that
goes out the window. Fathers are every bit as hands-on with their children as their wives are, in that they would openly shower them with physical affection and undivided attention throughout their kids’ lives. They aren’t expected to work for their family all the time, as the women are equally free to hunt for prey and food. While they’re away, the men leap effortlessly into the role of caretaker.
According to Professor Hewlett, “they do it somewhat less than the mothers, but when they do it they hug and kiss the babies, and even clean them more.” Here’s a statistic that will put things into further perspective: Aka fathers are within reach of their infants 47% of the time, which the professor found to be more than fathers in any other ‘cultural group on the planet’. Such was the impressiveness of this fact that when it surfaced, Fathers Direct - UK’s national information centre for fatherhood - named the Aka “the best dads in the world”. Let’s not forget their strong female peers. Not only are women encouraged to hunt, they are also good at it, if not more so than the men. Feminism is still a heated point of debate today, but the Aka tribe seem to grasp the concept simply by giving women the freedom to do what they want. To call them tough would be an understatement; one Aka superwoman was reported to be hunting right up until the eighth month of her pregnancy. If that’s not admirable enough, the same woman went back to work within a month of delivering her baby. In fact, it is a common sight to see women trudging through the forests with their newborns strapped to their sides while on
the prowl for dangerous beasts like duiker (a type of antelope).
Breastfeeding...for Males It’s true. The men of Aka are so dedicated to being good fathers that they don’t hesitate to suckle their offspring when their wives are at work. While men certainly don’t lactate, one can surmise that sucking on the nipple of a parent is more comforting for a child than a pacifier. For both father and child, it is an instinctive thing to do given the physical and emotional closeness between them. Moreover, there is no stigma associated with men who suckle their children. The dads see no embarrassment in heading down to their local equivalent of a pub with a child attached to their bosom, while downing palm wine and enjoying the company of their male friends. After all, the Aka people place unparalleled importance on physical closeness with their offspring, and are accustomed to carrying them around with them all the time. Get this: there is no such thing as cots in their camps because Aka parents don’t believe in leaving their babies lying around unattended. This refreshing view on childcare stems from the belief they possess that children
are precious. Their regard for their offspring is summed up by Professor Hewlett like so: “To the Aka, your children are the very value of your life. The idea of a child as a burden would be incomprehensible here... children are the energy, the life force of the community.”
Caring But Never Overbearing Don’t be fooled by their close bond: Aka parents are not subscribers of helicopter parenting. The love they provide their children extends to their willingness to let them make mistakes, no matter how dangerous it might seem. Professor Hewlett recorded a video in which a one year-old infant sits in his mother’s lap holding a knife. The conventionally alarming sight only triggers a look of interest from his mother, who doesn’t interfere as her son clumsily tries to scrape the kernels off a corncob. This scene is followed by that of another baby walking around a boiling pot hanging above a fire. Adults are nearby, but none of them try to keep him away from the potential catastrophe, or seem even mildly distressed by it. To us it may seem like neglectful parenting, but this is just the Aka people’s way of life. They believe in giving the children ample space to grow and learn, and it is probably effective in its own way as Hewlett claims he has never seen a child or an infant cut him/herself. Yet, there is no doubt that the children can reach out for their parents when they need the support. To us, the notion of a child sleeping separately from his/her parents and even his/her siblings is a step towards independence, but the Aka tribe view that as neglect. While living space is available to the Aka people in large abundance, each family is a tight knit unit, with all the members sleeping in one bed.

ooking for a cosy and quirky café to hold small gatherings with your friends, or a charming environment to complete your assignments whilst indulging in some delectable bites and awesome beverages? Then look no further than Bmon Café. This cartooninspired café will surely get you falling in love with it as soon as you’re inside. Creative and beautiful hand-drawn artwork and stories of Bmon – a comic character inspired by Doraemon – adorn the walls of the café and immediately captured our attention. Opened in November 2014, this colourful and cheery comic-themed café is a joint venture between Travis and Bmon (yes, the cartoon character is actually named after himself). Within the café, take your pick from five cool areas – the library, tatami area (tea area), train area, dining area and smoking area. Personally, we liked the library and train areas the most due to their fun concepts and decorations. The library is pretty small, about the size of a little reading corner, but it’s super comfy and oozes warmth! The train area’s concept is the most intriguing as the wall art mimics the actual scenery you’ll see when looking out of a train window. What’s more, there is “luggage” on the top of your seat, furthering the whole train area concept. After much ooh-ing and ahh-ing, it was time to dig in! We decided to start with their signature dish, the cutely-named, ‘Hippo In The Pond’ (RM16.90). This hearty, must-try dish comprises a golden brown and crispy croquette
served with jumbo sausage, corn, green beans, crabsticks, chicken slices, a whole boiled egg and a tangy cheese sauce. Unquestionably, it is a dish that you don’t want to miss! Next up was the ‘Mushroom Wrap’ (RM12.90), which is loaded with five different types of flavoursome mushrooms – shiitake, Portobello, button, golden needle and oyster mushrooms. Biting into the wrap revealed fresh slices of tomatoes, lettuce and the right amount of olive oil and cheese within. If by any chance you’re a waffle maniac like us, you will love their extremely crunchy and tasty ‘Cheezy Waffle’ (RM16.90) and ‘Banana Waffle’ (RM15.90). The ‘Cheezy Waffle’ is served with a thick slice of waffle drizzled in generous amounts of cheese, chicken ham and also scrambled eggs with five different types of mushroom in it. As for the ‘Banana Waffle’, it is served with a rather crispy waffle, accompanied by a few banana slices, one scoop of vanilla ice cream and some almonds, making it sinfully delicious. A nice, scrumptious meal wouldn’t be complete without a refreshing drink. If you’re a latte fan, we have good news for you as Bmon offers five different types of syrup for your cuppa. Choose from Mur, Gingerbread, Roasted almond, Butterscotch and Caramel. We tried the ‘Mur Latte’ (RM11) and we’d say it’s a delightful experience as the liquor-flavoured Mur syrup blends in well with the latte, making it smooth and fragrant. Make your day with a mug of their creamy and rich ‘Hot Chocolate’ (RM10), presented with a skilfully drawn coffee art on top. As for ‘Ruby
Mocha’ (RM15), it is a drink that’s worth a try as the raspberry syrup blends in well with the mocha, making it a perfect summer drink. Perhaps if you’re looking for something more unique, then you should try their signature drink, ‘Bmon Plant’ (RM13). Artfully presented, it is an aromatic coffee topped with whipped cream, cocoa powder and mint leaves. After the first sip, we know that this is the beverage that will make us come back for more. A number of surprises await us; firstly, the light hint of Mur syrup and mint, then the crunchy texture of hazelnuts contrasted against the smoothness of the coffee. Simply heavenly! If coffee is not your thing, Bmon still has something up their sleeve, which is the specially blended flower tea, ‘Peach Green Sencha’. It has a strong flower scent and a refreshing taste that will soothe your soul. A pot of ‘Peach Green Sencha’ costs RM15 and serves four. Also, if you wish to have some lemon slices or mint leaves with your tea, you can request it from them for free! Our sumptuous meal ended on a sweet note with a slice of Bmon’s sinfully decadent ‘Chocolate Peanut Butter Crepe’ (RM10). Every bite of it is like a taste of heaven, so it’s highly recommended for all the chocolate peanut butter fans amongst you.

imkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) initiated yet another astounding instalment of its annual cultural festival on 8th of May at the Limkokwing University Plaza. Themed “A World Without Borders”, the event witnessed the university’s international student community tapping into their enormous and vast cultural heritage from across 150 countries around the world. As an effort to promote international solidarity and compassion, the event proved to be a success that brought together the different flavours from across the globe under a single roof. Among the various attractions include a unique bazaar that promises to transport students across a crosscultural ride of traditional cuisine to the most beautiful handicrafts from around the world. Embracing the university’s philanthropic initiative, all proceeds from the event will be channelled to the Heal the World charity foundation. Over the years, Heal the World has generously contributed in sending aid in support of countries such as the Palestine, Philippines, Pakistan and Haiti. Touted as Malaysia’s largest cultural experience, the highlight of the cultural gathering was a series of amazing performances organised by the distinguished international student ambassadors of LUCT. The talent showcases were particularly popular with the crowd, garnering an endless cheer that lasted throughout the night. The multi-cultural night included performances from Malaysia, Egypt, Pakistan, China, Iran, Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia. Of course, the crowd was also hyped up by a special appearance from Malaysia’s biggest names in hip hop and proud Limkokwing alumni, Joe Flizzow and SonaOne. At its essence, the festival represents a true reflection of the University and its culture of unity in diversity.

A
nyone who has a cat knows our furry companion enjoys hiding, playing in paper bags and lying down in boxes. In fact, most cats seem to gravitate towards beds and hiding spots that are well… let’s just say not intended for them. They are known to notoriously sleep wherever they want – the bed, the couch or worse, on your favourite chair. Yes, we hear you peeps. Kiss those frustrating days goodbye as we bring you a super-cool way on how to make your very own cat tent/bed in just 15 minutes! It’s so simple we couldn’t believe it, and nor will your much loved furry friend. And the best part about this great project is the few materials needed (mostly recycled items that you can source from around your home) to make it. After all, we all know there’s an extra need to feed our bank accounts (psstt… blame it on the GST).
What you will need:

• A cat (duh!) • Medium-sized box • Medium-sized t-shirt • A 15 x 15 inch piece of cardboard • Two wire hangers

First up, cut the box into half (we opted for a vertical estimation of 15cm from the bottom of the box).

Twist the hooks off both hangers and cut the squiggly ends. d d
Straighten each of the wire hangers. Try to make them smooth and uniform. You will need to place the respective wires from corner to corner to form two graceful curves.

Now take the box and poke a hole in all the four bottom corners. You should be able to use the end of the hanger to do this. Make sure it’s at least a half inch in from each edge; avoid poking too large of a hole.

Next, push the ends through the holes you’ve just made in the corners. Bend at least an inch on the bottom of each hanger so that it sits against the bottom of the cardboard. Use the pliers to ease the bending process.
Tape the ends down flat against the bottom of the box – make sure you tape it well so it’s sturdy and won’t snag the shirt when you pull it over!

Cross the hangers in the middle and make sure all the ends touch of the box. Tape the wire arcs together at their centres to form a tent-like frame.

At this point, feel free to bend the wire so that it is structured according to your preference. Fiddle around with it and use the pliers if you need to curve or straighten it out a bit.

Pull the t-shirt over the tent frame (to avoid damaging the arcs, we started from the bottom) and position it so the neck hole is in the front middle while the bottom of the shirt is trailing behind the tent frame.

Fold up the excess from the bottom of the shirt and tighten it up so the neck hole is taut. Safety pin the bottom in place. Then, pull the excess of the sleeves tight and safety pin them in place too.
Voila! Your cat’s new secret hideout is ready.

Throw in a nice bedding (a cushion or a soft blanket) inside the tent to make it soft and cosy. Always be careful at the curvature of the hangers, make sure it will leave enough room for your cat. Reinforce the cardboard if necessary. Tape on a couple more supports to the cardboard and tape all around the edges for more stability. In the last step, keep tucking and safety pinning the excess of the t-shirt until it’s ready.
Now, watch as your cat wastes hours of fun playing and curling up in its new luxurious home. These cosy tents make quiet and comfortable hideouts for our feline friends. Show your furry kid a little extra love with this up-cycled kitty camp!

here’s no denying that the casual video game industry is thriving. Just take a look at the amount of friends playing ‘Clan Wars’ on their mobile devices and it becomes clear that there will always be a demand for games that are easy to pick up. This month, we take a look at a casual mobile game that was made by Kurechii, an indie video game studio that’s based in Malaysia. On the surface, ‘Tiny Guardians’ is a tower defence game. The more you play the game however, the more it turns out to be something much more challenging, engaging and ultimately, entertaining. In ‘Tiny Guardians’, you take on the role of LunaLie, an apprentice mage who sets off on an adventure in search of her master. Like any respectable mage, LunaLie has a good connection with her spiritual energy, and because of this, she’s able to summon heroes to aid her in her quest. There are 12 unique heroes in total that heed LunaLie’s summons, and they’re unlocked as the story progresses. As for enemy types, there are over 40 different foes to square off against, so there’s a respectable amount of variety here. Naturally, each enemy has its own weaknesses, which adds another layer of strategy to the game. The mechanics of ‘Tiny Guardians’ is simple. In each level, you summon a set amount of heroes to aid LunaLie against waves of enemies. Each summoned hero can be levelled up once enough points has been earned in that stage.
When a hero has levelled up, his or her stats increase and a special skill is unlocked. Because this isn’t an RPG, summoned heroes don’t maintain their levels, i.e. their levels are reset at the beginning of every new level. And yes, you can summon several of the same heroes, as long as you have enough mana. To increase replayability, a “Challenge” mode is unlocked for every successfully completed level. In short, ‘Tiny Guardians’ is a rather refreshing take on the tower defence genre. It’s a game that has high replay value and offers solid gameplay mechanics. If you’re looking for a great casual game to play on your mobile device, this is likely to be it. ‘Tiny Guardians’ is a mobile game for iOS and Android devices. It is priced at RM14.99.

THE LATEST UPCOMING GAMES Deception 4: The Nightmare Princess The successor to Deception IV: Blood Ties, Deception 4: The Nightmare Princess brings you a new angle on Laegrinna’s quest to free her father, the Devil, from his eternal prison. In this new game, you once again take on the role of Laegrinna, as she uses a number of ways to defeat her foes. There’s the option of a Sadistic Torment, or perhaps an Elaborate Death is more your style? For ultimate satisfaction, you’ll want to opt for Humiliating Demise. In terms of features, this game has a revamped Guard Gauge system, as well as some new additions in Stylish Mode. There’s also Remix Heart, which is something like a story mode.

How would you feel when you are being sent to do battle at the age of 14? And how would you feel when you suffer a horrible defeat and lost everything? This is what happened to Arslan, the 14-year-old prince of Pars who doesn’t have what it takes to be the next King, no matter how hard he tried. After barely escaping from battle, Arslan and his loyal servant, Daryun then embark on a journey to gather an army that is capable of defeating 300,000 soldiers and to save his kingdom from the rule of the torturous Silvermask. We can’t imagine how a soft and kind-hearted 14-year-old teenager will be able to gather a huge army all by himself. The struggles and challenges that awaits him, and how he overcomes them is what we’re looking forward to with this series.
