his month we celebrate all things – and people – who are loud and proud, outrageous and unafraid, or just extreme (in a good way, of course!). In our Cover Story, we don’t just look at the daredevils in our midst, but also what drives them to go at it over and over again, risking broken bones, immeasureable pain and what seems like unsurmountable frustration. That drive, is also what makes them winners – the same drive that successful business, legends in any industry, envelope-pushing scholars in any field will possess.

Food-wise, we pit man against food, in five extreme food-related challenges. So if physical exertion is not your thing, but eating is, then see page 56 for the lowdown on some gob-smacking races against time and portion. No less outrageous, but in a cool kinda way, is our interview with pop-surrealism artist Nik Syazmie who basked in the spotlight at the recent Nando’s Art Initiative and took our surreal questions in stride, on page 20. So there you go. We hope you’re inspired by these amazing feats, achieved by ‘animals’ (and we say that in the nicest way – we’re in awe, really!) and take advantage of the avenues where you too can showcase your taste for the extreme. Who Bagged the ‘Oscars’?

It’s a significant achievement to nab the Wood Pencil award at ‘The Oscars’ of the creative industry - the prestigious 2015 British Design and Art Direction Awards (D&AD), and a duo from Taylor’s University Design School did just that. Vivi Chandiana and Romario Suwandy’s comic strip series titled ‘Ini Medan, Bung,’ used unique colours and inspiration from a local comic strip to develop an authentic reflection of the people from their hometown of Bandung, Indonesia. “My hometown is a sanctuary of more than a dozen ethnic groups and languages. We decided to launch an integrated identity campaign, representing citizens through the language of colour. We managed to infuse the Pantone brand while celebrating versatile, creative and cultural diversities of my country. We went along with the tagline commonly heard in the city and decided to have fun with it,” Vivi said. This year’s New Blood category had contestants reimagine their hometown through the language of colour. The pair’s efforts earned them the honour of a place in the 2015 New Blood Academy, a two-week creative boot camp that catapults young creative students into the industry. Their achievement is significant as Taylor’s University is the first Asian university to be shortlisted and the first to win the D&AD’s Wood Pencil Award.

Did You Jog For Hope? Fully organised by Taylor’s students, the seventh edition of the annual Jog For Hope run saw the participation of approximately 2,000 runners. The ‘Jog-for-a-cause’ fundraising event successfully raised a grand total of RM60,000, with the beneficiaries being Siddharthan Care Centre, a home for underprivileged children and senior citizens, and the Sinthamani Divine Life Ashram orphanage. About 120 volunteers consisting of students and staff from Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas and Taylor’s College Subang Jaya helped in making this year’s edition a success. Organising Chairman Sze Kah Seng quipped, “We wouldn’t have been able to raise the funds without their generous contributions and enthusiastic participation and their personal effort to spread the word on this event.”

A Night Of Glamour

Themed ‘Glamour Night’, the annual UTAR Ball was held for the first time in Ipoh and attended by more than 250 students from its Kampar and Sungai Long campuses. According to UTAR’s Student Development Vice President and Alumni Relations Association Professor, Dr Teh Chee Seng, the UTAR Ball was originally an orientation programme aimed at bridging the connections between seniors and juniors. A lineup of astounding performances, ranging from magic shows to electrifying dances was presented by multitalented UTAR students and alumni. Awards for the Best Student Leader, Most Talented UTARian, Sportsperson of The Year and Best Society were announced during the event. Before the ball concluded with an energetic mix of music, two lucky students were crowned the event’s Mr and Miss Glamorous.

What’s the Reka-Design Convention all about?

Zouk KL Returns with a Bang When Zouk reopened on Jalan Tun Razak slightly over a month ago, having moved from its former landmark on Jalan Ampang to the swanky Tun Razak Exchange (TREC), party people in the Klang Valley celebrated by packing up the brand spanking new complex. Moods mirrored the skies as fireworks exploded to the exhilaration of attendees during its grand launch. CP put on our party garb and dancing shoes and explored the walls of the 11 rooms within. On the Ground Floor, there’s the 3,303 sq ft Zouk Café Bar and 1,485 sq ft Beer Garden, both relaxing spaces to wind up or down for pre- or post-party gatherings. The 6,574 sq ft Mainroom is, like in its former home, right at the heart of the Zouk complex. The biggest room in Zouk KL boasts over a million LED bulbs, and state of the art Funktion-One sound system that pumps out the choons to keep the party going. Up the stairs from Mainroom is Ace, which provides a safe haven for hip-hop and R&B to break out their moves on the dancefloor. At 2,346 sq ft, Ace has windows that overlook Mainroom so as to double up as additional space for nights when international guest DJs perform. Next to Mainroom is Phuture. Noteworthy is the suspension track hoisting dancers around the dance floor, Cirque du Soleil style in the 5,200 sq ft room. Up next is Velvet Underground, which is no longer underground in the new complex. The 5,700sq ft dapper room is reminiscent of its old self, while the cosy Members Lounge sits nestled between Phuture and Velvet. Its cheeky center features the now-famous giant slide where VIPs exit exclusive champagne lounge Imperial above it. On the first floor is Apex Lounge, Glass Box, Imperial and Balcony Deck. Our favourite room- Apex Lounge is an imposing beauty at 5,638 sq ft, and gorgeous floor to ceiling windows that display the splendor of KL’s skyline for all to see. Expect trendy house, nu disco, indie and classic hits here. The Balcony Deck is an open air space that’s minimalist and opens up to the greenery of the Royal Selangor Golf Club, offering respite from the beast of a party inside. http://www.zoukclub.com.my/

ando’s isn’t just about serving scrumptious PERi-PERi chicken, they’re also highly passionate in supporting and providing opportunities to local communities to realise and show off their talent. Subsequently, they started the Nando’s Art Initiative to serve as a platform for Malaysians to express themselves freely through art. As part of the company’s continuous support to the winners of Nando’s Art Initiative, Grand Prize winner 24-year-old Nik Mohd Shazmie was afforded the opportunity to unveil his first ever solo exhibition at Lot 123, Nando’s Chinatown outlet. Themed ‘Home Sweet Home’, the exhibition is a reflection of who he truly is. CP seized the opportunity to throw this talented and passionate pop-surrealism artist some quirky questions, and loved his equally offbeat answers in return. C+: If you were P. Ramlee’s moustache, what song would you be singing?

Nik: I would sing Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in P. Ramlee’s tune, complete with relaxing rain sounds in the background. C+: One day, a local politician woke up and he actually said something smart. What do you think he had for breakfast? Nik: GST-exempted IQ pills, I guess. C+: If you were able to read someone’s mind and knew that they are going to kidnap you, what would you do? Nik: I would try to be really, really fat to the extent that his car or van or whatever it is can’t fit me in. Now he would have to crack his head on thinking about how to kidnap me and would probably give up on the idea. C+: Miraculously, you wake up one fine morning and discover that you’re 20 years in the future. What’s the first thing you would do? Nik: Oh man, I so can’t wait to know who my wife is and who the current prime minister is. Let’s find out! C+: If you become a piece of sticky note one day, what message would you like to remind people of? Nik: A sweet message that reminds everyone to appreciate the small things in life and not to take them for granted. Something that would remind them about the value of appreciation. C+: If you were a bottle of juice, what kind of benefits would you be giving or what would you consist of? Nik: I would consist of complete vitamins that have the ability to transform someone from a total jerk to a rational person. And you’re welcome.

HIGH BY THE BEACH

| LANA DEL REY

E•MO•TION

| CARLY RAE JEPSEN

A year after her ground-breaking studio album Ultraviolence was released, Del Rey returns with her first single ‘High By The Beach’, taken off her upcoming fourth studio album, Honeymoon. We were apprehensive that her new piece would be an extension of Ultraviolence, but were proven wrong. The ethereal harmonies with unusual electro synth and pulsing beats blended well with Lana’s signature husky voice, making this smooth and chill wave track a great companion over the party weekend. You’d be humming it for days after.

After totally ruling the summer of 2012 with ‘Call Me Maybe’, Jepsen is now all set to rule over our lyrical fulfilment with her third studio album, E•MO•TION. Critically acclaimed by song critics and fans alike for her song writing skills and overall production, what’s our verdict then? Two words: Blown away. The levels of complexity, spontaneity and passion that she has infused throughout the entire album lets her personality shine through and easily makes it to our shortlist of fave album of the year. Miss it at your own loss.

EVES THE BEHAVIOR

HAVE YOU IN MY WILDERNESS

| EVES THE BEHAVIOR

Eves The Behaviour aka Hannah Karydas is a brilliant powerhouse performer who has taken over the internet with her astounding singles, and her new album shows why. The songs are infused with a sense of mystery and darkness, yet breaks out in hopeful overtones in the form of Karydas’ ethereal and soulful vocals. ‘Digging’ is undoubtedly the masterpiece of the album, delivering a deep lyrical content that’s perfectly delivered by Karydas’ emotional vocals. Stunningly intelligent and lyrically engaging, this album’s a keeper.

| JULIA HOLTER

Known as the master of tonal mashups, Julia Holter is an artist who can effortlessly reinterpret an emotion into something entirely new. Like ‘Feel You’, a song that on first listen conjures a thousand and one things, but having at its core simple yet beautifully poetic lyrics. Holter’s overwhelmingly beautiful vocals carries the song’s angelic and dreamlike atmosphere to ethereal and serene heights. You’d need a moment to get yourself back to reality after listening to this one. It’s that good.

n conjunction with Imagine Dragons’ ‘Smoke + Mirrors’ Tour live in Singapore on 25 August, Universal Music Malaysia organised a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition earlier on. A number of bands battled it out by submitting a minute-long video of them performing any Imagine Dragons’ songs from their latest album, Smoke + Mirrors to Facebook via hashtags #imaginedragonsbotb and #smokeandmirrorstour. After some fierce lyrical battles, six finalists were picked to compete in the Grand Finale on 16 August at The Bee, Publika. The performances were evaluated by a panel of judges comprising Sekumpulan Orang Gila, Universal Music Malaysia representatives and Raku representatives. So who emerged winners? Congratulations to champions Beatburns, who earned the right to fly to Singapore to catch the concert and to meet Imagine Dragons personally. That was a deservedly great performance from them! Also, congratulations to Modescape who scored the first runner up position and walked away with Klipsch prizes worth up to RM400 each. For Josie and The Broke’d Minders, the band’s hard playing effort was rewarded the second runner up position and they took home RadioShack prizes worth up to RM200 each. EXTREME SPORTS AROUND MALAYSIA

OCTOBER 2015

GOING TO THE

EXTREME IMAGINE LIVING EVERY DAY ON THE EDGE, AND beInG Constantly drIven by adrenalIne – THAT’S WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE IN THE SHOES OF AN EXTREME SPORTS ATHLETE.

W

hile most of us would consider it a job well done if we lug our butts to the gym more than three times a week, these guys live for pushing their bodies to their limits. They defy gravity, scale new heights, and perform stunts that most of us couldn’t imagine doing in our wildest dreams. Now, we’re giving you an inside look at what it’s like to be them. Who knows? Maybe it might inspire you to walk on the extreme side of life too.

Aiman, Hazim and Hatta,

Art of Extreme Movement (AOXM) Traceurs (practitioners of parkour)

On when and how they got their start in parkour: Aiman: I started when I was 13, and have been involved in parkour for seven years now. Hazim: I’ve done parkour since I was in Form 3 or 4 (15-16 years old), and was inspired by YouTube videos. Hatta: I started doing parkour three years back, because I had wanted to improve my dancing skills back then.

On what drew them to parkour: Hatta: I’m attracted to parkour because it allows its practitioners to constantly challenge themselves. People always say the worst enemy is yourself, but parkour helps you overcome that. For example, if you were to jump off a cliff or a roof, you may think you cannot do it, but eventually, you will be able to do it anyway, and that’s the thrill of doing parkour. Hazim: I like it for the challenge of always learning something new. Sometimes you have to train for two to three months just to do a simple flip or a single trick, but when you do, it’s very satisfying. Aiman: I like it because it’s fun (laughs).

On injuries to look out for: Hatta: I haven’t suffered any major injuries, not yet anyway, but some of the common things you should look out for are sprained ankles and knees. One thing you can do to avoid them or lessen the risk of them happening is to do a lot of conditioning, like stretching out your ankles and legs. Working out helps too.

On AOXM: Hatta: It was started three years ago, and it’s a group that’s not just about parkour, but tricking, free running and calisthenics too. To raise our profile and awareness of parkour, we do a lot of events, performances, demos, workshops, road shows and commercials all over the country.

On what they would say to get one to try parkour: Hatta: If doing backflips is on your wish list, you should definitely do parkour! Hazim: Do it for self-defence, to protect you while you’re being chased by a dog… or by the police! (CP: We should probably add that he was just jesting!) Aiman: Girls like backflips, so why not? It’s cool.

Fizzy Suhaimi, 25,

BMX freestyle rider but I’ve been involved in BMX since then and never stopped.

On his biggest achievements:

On how he got his start in BMX: When I was a kid, I represented Perak in downhill mountain biking. One day, I turned on the TV and saw the asian X Games for the first time. It interested me, and made me feel like trying out BMX. Furthermore, they had just built a skate park that was 500m away from my home then. after I finished my contract with Perak, I asked my father to buy me a BMX bike after getting good results in SPM. So, I started riding BMX when I was 17, which is quite a late age to start,

last year, I came in fifth at langkawi FIse World Series’ Asian Pro class. A few years ago, Air Asia invited 16 pros from all over Asia, and I managed seventh place, which I was quite happy with. In extreme sports, there is not really such a thing as being number one in the world. If you train hard and are consistent, you can get the podium all for yourself, which is the best. Personally, I feel that my greatest achievement is that when I get onto the podium, I feel great and I feel good.

On major injuries suffered: I once did a demo for Carbon Free sunday at Bangsar and I fell. You can look it up on YouTube; just type ‘Kecik Ipoh’ and you’ll see it. It’s close to 29,000 views now. My fall was filmed live, and it quickly went viral. My mistake was I didn’t wear a helmet. I usually do, but on that day, my teammates had suggested we try a new trick,

and I fell while I was doing it. As a result, I went into a coma for a day. I had fallen on Sunday, and woken up on Monday at University Malaya Medical Centre, not remembering a thing. I had broken my head after all!

On advice to those who want to try BMX: Wear your safety gear, like your helmet, elbow pads, knee pads and shin guards. Buy a proper BMX bike, don’t use your grandmother’s bicycle! that’s not a proper bike so it would be dangerous. If you go to Putrajaya, try out the Putrajaya Challenge Park. If you live in shah Alam you can come to Shah Alam Extreme Park, or you can also go to Mont Kiara Skate Park, which is our “headquarters”. You can just meet with us, and you don’t have to pay us anything; we’ll teach you for free. If you learn the safety rules, basics and everything else that will protect you, you’re going to be safe. SHAH ALAM EXTREME PARK DETAILS location: Jalan Lompat Pagar 13/37, Seksyen 13, 40100 Shah Alam Website: www.facebook.com/ShahAlamExtremePark opening Hours: Mon – Fri 10am – 11pm, Sat – Sun 9am – 11pm

Bern,

Flyboard Instructor at Flyboard Malaysia On how he got his start in flyboarding: I started flyboarding two-and-a-half years ago, at the suggestion of my colleague Raja Aris Dzulkifli who got me to come to Putrajaya to try it. The first time I tried it was an epic fail. However, on the second try, with guidance from friends in the flyboarding community, I managed to fly two-feet above the water. From that moment on, my interest was sparked. I got my own flyboard and jet ski, and here I am.

On interesting stunts in flyboarding: Personally, I love the 360 and moonwalk. (CP: hit search on youtube to check out these spectacles!) Moonwalking can be done in a few ways: the usual moonwalk and the reverse moonwalk. Stunts can also be combined. Other cool stunts are the side dolphin, normal dolphin and reverse dolphin. One of

the most happening tricks now is a backflip and reverse and front backflips. this is why I love flyboarding: it always gives me a new challenge to rise to. Now, I’m challenging myself to do the backflip, and I hope to master it by year end.

On fears in flyboarding: No matter what sport you do, there’s always a fear. I’m actually scared of heights, but now I’m completely comfortable with flyboarding, and I can fly 30- to 40-feet high. I’ve actually experienced falling from 40 feet before. If you fall into the water, it’s okay, but not if you fall onto the jetty or the jet ski. In order to prevent that, safety must always come first. never play close to the jetty or jet ski. I always follow the guidance of my throttler (the one who controls the water pressure that determines how high the flyboarder will go).

On his hopes for the flyboarding scene in the next five years: Currently, we have something called the Flyboard World Competition, which happened last year in Dubai, and will be in North America this year. I really hope in the next five years, the competition will come to Malaysia. We have good facilities and a lot of talent in Malaysia. FLYBOARD MALAYSIA DETAILS location: Marina Putrajaya, No.1, Jalan P5/5, Presint 5, 62200 Putrajaya Website: www.facebook.com/flyboardmy opening Hours: Fri – Sun 9am – 7pm

Saiful Razlan, 27,

Programme Manager at Jumpstreet and former national gymnast

On what he did leading up to Jumpstreet:

On what he does at Jumpstreet: I conduct classes for Jump Academy, which means if you start at zero, I can make you a hero! I can coach you so you can perform stunts such as flips and have the same skills as I do. I’m also a coach for the cheerleading classes, where I teach tumbling. Then there’s aerobics, which I’m a coach for, along with a few other instructors as well. We also collaborate with Art of Extreme Movement (AOXM) on parkour classes.

Since I was nine, I’ve been involved heavily in a lot of gymnastic competitions, until I graduated from Bandar Penawar Sports School, which is now known as Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School. Before I became a programme manager, I was a Shift Leader for the Jump Referees, which means I supervise all of the Jump Referees. Now, Jumpstreet is a big part of my life, because I love the sport, and I’m not the type to sit still in one place for long.

On what makes working for Jumpstreet more interesting than conventional jobs: I’m not only involved with trampolines, but customers too. Here, we have all kinds of people come from all over the world. One day it will be someone from Netherlands, and another day it could be someone from

Germany. I like that we get to communicate with and experience different cultures, and to me that’s better than the nine-tofive routine and getting caught in jams any day.

On his role models: One of them is Alexei Nemov, a Russian gymnast. He’s consistently excellent in every competition he’s gone to. another one is Chris Silcox, who does performance gymnastics. He does everything from trampoline jumping to tumbling! (CP: you can view his stunts on youtube!) JUMPSTREET DETAILS location: No 8A, Jalan 13/6, Seksyen 13, 46200, Petaling Jaya Website: www.jumpstreetasia.com opening Hours: Sun – Thurs 10am – 9pm, Friday – Sat 10am – 10pm

EXTREME FASHION

OCTOBER 2015

In Your Face,

Fashion! Rules are meant to be broken, as they say, and we are applying this ethos to our fashion spread this month. It’s prints, textures and exaggerated silhouettes galore as we throw caution to the wind and show you how fun it is to be loud, and proud of it! Also, if you think it’s not possible for you to pull anything this extreme off, we endeavour to prove you wrong by bringing you five looks for five different styles. Of course, you don’t have to emulate these looks to a tee, so feel free to experiment with them as only you know how. Most importantly, have fun and take risks!

SPOTLIGHT ON LIMKOKWING UNIVERSITY

OCTOBER 2015 A hoodie becomes more than just workout gear with fine detailing and an edgy mask in Legends of the Nords.

The devil’s in the details for this design by Indonesia’s Maureen Kumala Dewi.

T

hemed ‘Tribal Superheroes’, the latest ‘Creativity in Motion’ graduation fashion show from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology’s Faculty of Fashion and Lifestyle Creativity was nothing short of inspiring when it was shown at Starhill Gallery recently. Diversity was certainly not lacking on this special evening, as students from seven countries presented their designs via 26 models who hailed from 15 nations. Among them were models from United Kingdom, United States of America, Russia, Iran, and Kenya. As a result, the designs showcased a wide spectrum of inspirations from all corners of the globe, playing perfectly into the theme. Juxtaposing ‘ethnic sensibility and pop culture’, the gorgeous clothes gave us an idea of what superheroes would look like if they stuck to their ethnic roots – and we’ve gotta say, they would look pretty damn good. Better yet, they were complemented by shoes from Nose, makeup by Shu Uemura and hairstyling by L’Oreal and Miko Galere. Ready to be mesmerised? Here are a few outstanding collections we curated.

The superhero and tribal themes become one in this caped creation by Dayana Ramli.

Colourful motifs add some flair to this flowing outfit from The 5 Elements of Dancheong collection.

Colonial Majestueus by Sharmaine Adriena Shahhar (Malaysia) Namibian model Emily Kandanga adds a touch of sass to this elegant design, inspired by KL’s Hotel Majestic era.

This design by Sharmaine Adriena Shahhar is the epitome of modern sophistication.

EXTREME BEAUTY TREATMENTS

OCTOBER 2015

FeelingPretty(Icky) W

ould you be willing to be pooped on, peed on or slapped – in the dubious name of beauty? You might not be, and you probably think we’re making this up, but it’s true – there are a surprising number of brave (and gross) people out there who buy into the hype. Beauty treatments that are out of this world are not some new fad. In fact, they are steeped in a long rich history that will either leave you feeling inspired or queasy. For instance, Egypt’s Queen Cleopatra was said to have washed her body with crocodile’s dung and donkey’s milk, while leeches were used in medieval times to restore bodily fluids like blood and phlegm. If you’re not yet repulsed by what you’ve read so far, then read on for five of the weirdest beautifying treatments that exist right now, and the alternatives that you can try for the same results, without the massive prices and terrifying ‘during’ photos.

Bird Poop Geisha Facial

Vampire facial

How it works: Firstly, two teaspoons of blood are drawn from the patient. Then, the doctor uses a centrifuge to isolate platelets from the blood, before activating them to release more platelets that will heal injured tissue. Following that, the doctor injects the growth factor (read: blood) into the skin, which will cause stem cells to be activated and get rid of sagginess or dullness. Use instead: L’Oreal Revitalift Magic Blur Cream RM65.90 Non-greasy yet rich with moisture, this face cream helps one to achieve a younger appearance by ridding your skin of fine lines. With long term use, your face will also look visibly firmer. 36

| CAMPUS PLUS

How it works: Originally invented for geishas whose complexions would suffer from wearing lead-based white makeup, the facial is made from the excrement of birds and not just any old bird too, but nightingales specifically from the island of Kyushu. For US$180 (approx. RM753), a beautician will paint your face with the substance and mix it with a few other ingredients to minimise the stench. It is now used to restore brightness to skin. Use instead: Garnier Sakura White Pinkish Radiance Whitening Cream RM9.40 Enriched with Japanese Sakura Extract, this whitening cream not only brightens your skin tone, but also keeps it refined and soothes it. Add to that UVA and UVB protection, and you have a product that will ensure your skin never loses that vital glow.

Urine

How it works: Known to practitioners as urotherapy, it is believed that your pee will eliminate acne when applied on the face. The first urine of the day is collected which is then soaked up by a cotton ball before being applied to the blemished area. It is supposed to be left for ten minutes before being rinsed off. For acne scars, one can let the urine sit for a few days so it becomes more concentrated before using a cotton swab to treat the desired area. Use instead: b.liv No Spots, Bye Dots RM79.90 Best for highly distressed and blemished skin, this cleansing gel gives your skin a deep cleanse by exfoliating unhealthy dead cell layers and forming a protective barrier against bacteria.

Micro-Needle Therapy Breast-slapping How it works: Exclusive to one natural health practitioner in Thailand (as far as we know), this woman has gained international attention for slapping boobs to enlarge them. The bosom is put through rigorous rounds of massaging and beating to force excess fat found elsewhere into them, which increases one’s bust size by at least a few inches. Use instead: Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Bust Cream RM34.80 While this cream won’t actually boost your breasts by one entire cup size, it can give the appearance of a fuller chest by firming and toning it.

How it works: While it sounds like the tamest treatment on this list, we bet you would squirm at the idea of having hundreds of tiny spikes piercing your skin at once, which is exactly what this does. As it punctures the skin, it is said to stimulate skin renewal and allow higher absorption of creams. Use instead: Clarisonic Mia RM399 Using a method called Facial Sonic Cleansing, this compact brush oscillates at a frequency that works with your skin’s natural elasticity to remove dirt, oil and deep-seated impurities, thus prepping your skin for better absorption of creams and gels.

OCTOBER’S BEAUTY PICKS

OCTOBER 2015

Maybelline The Nudes Palette

RM69.90 Maybelline has finally come out with a comprehensive palette of nude eyeshadows, and it is 12 shades strong. Consisting of beiges, sandy hues, bronzes and taupe shades, it allows makeup aficionados to experiment with a wide range of day-to-night eyeshadow looks. The colours are divided into matte and shimmering finishes, in case you want a bolder look or a more subtle finish. Better still, they were all created with the purpose of complementing each other, so even newbies to eyeshadows won’t be able to go wrong.

Laneige x Playnomore Intense Lip Gel

RM75 To greet the Fall 2015 season, Korean beauty brand Laneige is joining forces with Korean fashion brand Playnomore to create a new range of cosmetics bearing the latter’s signature comic book-style big eyes. One of them is the Intense Lip Gel, a hybrid of lipstick and lip gloss. Melding the cleaner application of a lipstick and the high wattage shine of a lip gloss, it provides moisture to last you throughout the day, and a precise applicator to fill in your lips like a pro makeup artist. It is now available in 10 highly pigmented colours, ranging from pinks to corals and reds.

Kiss Me Sunkiller Skincare Gel SPF35

RM29.90 While its primary function is a moisture UV gel, this skincare gel from its new Sunkiller range also doubles as a makeup base. Despite its gel-like consistency, it is lightweight and invisible once applied. It is also greatly moisturising, containing two types of hyaluronic acid and two types of collagen. If you dislike the conventional sunscreen smell, you’d be happy to hear that this gel’s scent leans towards a citrus-y flavour. And to those with sensitive skin, here’s another reason to rejoice: it is free of synthetic pigments, and has been tested for skin irritancy and photo-stimulated reactions.

K-Palette Real Lasting Eyeliner 24H WP Super Black (Limited Edition)

RM59.90 Named the 1-Day Tattoo eyeliner for its ability to last 24 hours on your eyelids, the latest way to draw your cat-eye liner is also quick drying and waterproof. With a formula made with a high-fix polymer, it does a good job of staying put on eyelids, no matter how oily they might get in this humid weather. Being waterproof, you also don’t have to worry about sweat and water ruining your sharp eyeliner wing. All that being said, it is still a cinch to remove, needing only lukewarm water to be wiped off. Aside from that, its fine brush tip enables one to fill in gaps between lashes and draw on your lower lash line.

Garnier Sakura White Matte Pinkish Radiance Whitening Cream

RM9.40 Garnier’s latest whitening cream uses the power of Japanese Sakura Extract to even out skin tones and enhance your skin’s natural pink-tinged radiance. It also combats skin darkening, refines skin texture and soothes your complexion. Additionally, it acts as a shield against the dangers of prolonged exposure to sunrays thanks to its UVA and UVB protection. It is best used with the rest of the products within the range, which includes a Gentle Cleansing Foam, Ultimate Serum, Sleeping Essence and Intensive Whitening Mask with Sakura Extract.

HEAD IN THE GAME

OCTOBER 2015

S and game face on your kicks ake the whole with running ev t e g o ents Time t that aim to mmention challeprocess fun nging)! (not to

igning up for races and marathons seem to be the in thing these days (no offense to those who are serious about them and actually train), some races steer toward fun territory while some are downright extreme. We mean, who knew that paying RM50 to pound the pavement with 10,000 other sweaty people would be so popular? Still, we can’t deny the fact that it’s all very healthy, so if you’re looking to get fit and challenge yourself, here are some races with a fun twist to check out.

e c a R n a t r a p S k o Reeb If you imagine that you need to have a pretty decent level of fitness (like a Spartan, haha) in order to compete in this race, you won’t be far from the truth. Held around the world, contestants compete for best time and there are even global rankings to rate yourself against, as if you didn’t feel physically inferior enough already. For beginners, you can stick to the Sprint course, which is 5+ km and 15+ obstacles. If you fail an obstacle, you need to perform 30 burpees before you can move on, but you can complete the course at your own pace. Advanced competitors can opt for the Super (at a tougher terrain of 13+ km and 20+ obstacles) or the Beast at 20+ km and 25+ obstacles, which we can imagine, would be, er, quite a beast to finish. Grunts: 10/10

Viper 2 Four Challenge

The organisers have already had two very successful Viper Challenge events this year and will be organising their third at the end of the year. Called the Viper 2 Four, participants will have to complete various obstacles in a course, as many laps as they can, in the space of 24 hours. We feel tired just writing that bit. It’s touted Asia’s longest endurance obstacle course race – which we don’t doubt, because if you’re mad enough to want to race for 24 hours, you can do anything after that. Team relays and individual categories are available. Be expected to climb, crawl, swing and dirty yourself in mud and water to win cash prizes and live to tell the tale. Grunts: 8.5/10

Bloodrunner Who doesn’t want to complete an obstacle course with (gasp!) werewolves to fight off along the way? BloodRunner is a 10 kilometre-long race around Putrajaya where participants undergo a series of exciting obstacles designed to push them both physically and mentally. There’s the Sobriety Beams challenge where you’ll need to walk and balance yourself on ascending and descending beams and also the Mount Agony challenge, which involves climbing over different-sized walls, all while werewolves try to distract you. This year’s event entertained supporters and spectators too – there were food trucks on site to offer snacks and performances by local bands Kiss Kill Mary and Jon Liddell to entertain. Grunts: 7/10

Electric Run Neon glow sticks, trippy lights and a dance party at the very end? Yes please! This fun night run is like a rave party with a little more cardio effort at 5km and features brightly lit lands throughout the course. Dress up for it in glow-inthe-dark clothes and it’ll make for awesome Instagram-worthy pics. If the 5km is NBD for you, that’s what the music and dancing is for at the end. Grunts: 6/10

r u o l o C n r e t s a E t a e Gr Your Life Run Taking a leaf out of a similarly-themed run held not too long ago, the Great Eastern Colour Your Life Run was held a couple of months ago and aimed to increase the level of happiness among Malaysians whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle. Participants ran in either a 12km timed race or a 5km fun run where there were stations set up, each with different coloured powder showered upon runners and varied genres of music playing. So the challenge, if you think about it, isn’t so much as to run the race in good time as it is to ensure you have all stations covered and every colour of powder available, staining your clothes and face. To add to the festivities, there were performances by local acts, sporty activities and even free medical checkups. Penang also had their version of the run earlier this year. Grunts: 5.5/10

e f e i f L i L r o r F o RReellaayy F Aiming to raise cancer awareness, the Relay For Life is for a good cause organised annually by the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, with this year’s theme being ‘Join Us, This Fight is Yours Too!’ The 16-hour overnight relay starts at 6pm, with the tradition of selected cancer survivors running the Survivors’ Lap followed by the Caregivers Lap. This is followed by Team Laps and public participants will continue to relay throughout the night until the morning with the Final Lap as the closing ceremony. At dusk, the Luminaria Ceremony is held with lit candles, to commemorate those who have lost their battle with cancer, honour those who have fought it in the past and support those who continue to fight the illness. Grunts: 5/10

You’ve

Got F

FIT GUYS ON EXTREME

Male OCTOBER 2015

or this month, we’ve eschewed the usual fashion piece to bring you a different kind of ‘guys’ stuff’. If getting fit is on your agenda but never on your list of accomplished tasks, these men will school you on health and fitness, plus a few other extremes in between. That’s what you get when you put a TV presenter, a strength coach, a fitness entrepreneur and a model in one room anyway *wink*. Which one of these guys is anti-Miley, and who wrote a song to impress a former flame? Read on to find out.

Bradley Lim, Strength Coach/ Health & Wellness Speaker Campus Plus: What’s the most extreme thing you’ve ever done to get fit? A: When I was preparing for my first photoshoot, the mainstream opinion was that carbs are the devil, so I cut out carbohydrates entirely from my diet. As a result, I was hungry throughout the entire period of dieting, my performance in the gym went down, and my concentration in class went out the window. I got the (modelling) job done and I lost tons of weight, but I wouldn’t recommend such an extreme method to anyone, as it isn’t sustainable. CP: What motivated you to get fit in the first place? A: Vanity, of course! I used to think that having bigger guns and pecs will score me dates with girls. Beyond the vanity phase, it was the satisfaction of achieving fitness goals that kept me going. CP: Do you think it matters for guys to pay as much attention to their looks as girls do? A: As much as I hate to admit it, looks matter, especially in society today. First impressions make or break a deal. Upon setting the “superficial” first impression, personality and attitude are what shine through next. CP: What is the most unflattering thing a girl can wear? A: Refer to whatever Miley Cyrus wears. CP: What’s the word that first comes to mind when you hear the word ‘EXTREME’? A: Letting loose!

Joseph Lee, Videographer/Model CP: What’s the most extreme thing you’ve ever done to get fit? A: One time, I trained so much (4 times that day) that I blacked out in my kitchen while eating dinner. CP: What motivated you to get fit in the first place? A: My dad has always been the biggest fitness inspiration in my life. He’s a really great golfer with numerous titles under his belt. Seeing him prepare for tournaments (hitting the greens, visiting the driving range and training at the gym) gave me the motivation to improve myself physically and mentally. CP: Since October is Halloween month, what extreme character would you be daring enough to dress up as? A: Deadpool! Who needs holes for your nose and mouth (on a mask) when you can look that cool? CP: What’s the most extreme thing you’ve ever done for a girl you like? A: I’ve bought flight tickets and flew down on the same day once just to patch things up with a girl whom I was dating back then. CP: What is the most unflattering thing a girl can wear? A: The best part of being a girl is that with a little confidence, they can wear anything they want and look good at the same time!

Harizon Ramli, Fitness Entrepreneur CP: What’s the most extreme thing you’ve ever done to get fit? A: Join the Navy for two years. CP: What’s your favourite extreme sport and why? A: Hiking, because it teaches you how to handle a difficult environment, as well as how to control your adrenaline rush. CP: Do you think it matters for guys to pay as much attention to their looks as girls do? A: Of course it’s important, because we all need to increase our self-confidence. Self-confidence matters to me because as a fitness trainer, you need to motivate others and be a role model to your clients. CP: What’s the most extreme thing you’ve ever done for a girl you like? A: Ask her to marry me! (CP: Sorry girls, this handsome chap is off the market!) CP: What’s the word that first comes to mind when you hear the word ‘EXTREME’? A: Something that pushes you to your limit.

Mark O’Dea, TV Presenter CP: What’s the most extreme thing you’ve ever done to get fit? A: Probably not eating cakes or cookies! For me that’s extreme, because I’ve got a super sweet tooth, so cutting out the cheesecakes and brownies from my diet was very tough! CP: What’s your favourite extreme sport and why? A: Rock climbing! I’ve done it a few times and it’s great because you use a lot of strength and its super fun to climb such crazy high walls! CP: Do you think it matters for guys to pay as much attention to their looks as girls do? A: I don’t think we need as much time to get ready as the ladies! But, I still think: “Why not?” If they can look all glam and beautiful, why can’t we? CP: Since October is Halloween month, what extreme character would you be daring enough to dress up as? A: Last year I did Luis Suarez (football player for FC Barcelona), which was pretty extreme; I put him on my shoulder in a cardboard form! This year, I quite fancy being some badass character from Game of Thrones. CP: What’s the most extreme thing you’ve done for a girl you like? A: I like to sing for fun , so I kinda made up a song for an exgirlfriend that I thought was kind of nice… but then we broke up a month later, so maybe I won’t try that one again!

QNAP TS-251C

OCTOBER 2015

COMPACT CONTENT STORAGE STAR QNAP TS-251C

Behind every cloud is a silver lining, but in this case, behind your personal cloud is the powerful QNAP TS-251C storage solution. Design It’s as simple and functional as they come – this network attached storage (NAS) is housed in a compact but sturdy white box roughly the size of a Tom Clancy hardcover book. On the front face, you have the power button and a USB 3.0 port, with a strip of indicator lights in between them. At the back, you have two additional USB 2.0 slots, an HDMI slot, one LAN port and a DC 12V port.

Features & Performance The TS-251C is feature-packed, and most of them are extremely useful for home users and small business owners. It’s a dual-bay NAS supporting 3.5-inch SATA hard drives of your choice, and powered by a 64-bit dual-core Intel Celeron 2.41GHz processor with energyefficient 1GB DDR3L RAM that allows read/ write speeds of up to 112 MB/s. The usual file sharing and backup services expected of an NAS device are all here, but what we liked most is how all the functions and features are easyto-use and versatile. For starters, the QTS user interface is intuitively designed to allow for easy operation of the NAS. It’s just like a Windows desktop – you can find desired functions quickly, 52

create desktop shortcuts and open multiple application windows simultaneously. Then, for all the on-the-go types amongst you, there is a myQNAPcloud service which keeps you constantly connected to your data. Meaning you can remotely access the NAS from anywhere, using your smartphone or tablet, so you can instantly share or stream your favourite stored multimedia contents (movies, HD videos, photos, class assignments etc.) with your friends. Via the provided Music Station, Photo Station and Video Station functions, we found that the storing, categorising, organising and sharing of song files, photos, videos and documents was a breeze. And it works the other way too – by making use of the Qfile mobile app on Android or iOS devices, one can instantly archive their photo memories by uploading the snapshots to the TS-251C. If you don’t want to use the media streaming functions that it has (and we wonder why not?), you can connect it directly to a TV via the HDMI port and utilise the HD Station and XBMC app to view content instead. This is especially great for older TVs with limited playback abilities and does away the need for an external media player.

GOLD

OCTOBER 2015

Another cool feature is the unit’s ability to transcode Full HD videos in real-time or offline, converting videos to a format that can be OCTOBER 2015 smoothly played on any PC, mobile devices and Smart TVs. Thanks to this on-the-fly hardware accelerated transcoding, you can simultaneously view different stored videos across multiple devices, minus the hassle of complicated and time-consuming file conversions.

Conclusion The QNAP TS-251C is an all-in-one NAS that’s surprisingly versatile and provides a great base for organising files, syncing files between different devices and remotely sharing multimedia content with different user groups. It works great as a backup and as a home media hub.

GOGEAR GPS1500 SOUND DOME

OCTOBER 2015

YOUR MINI

OCTOBER 2015

SOUND KING-DOME GoGear GPS1500 Sound Dome

OCTOBER 2015

The cute little GPS1500 Sound Dome wireless speaker from GoGear just begs to be taken with you everywhere – not only to be heard, but to be shown off. Design The first thing you’d notice about the Sound Dome is that it does live up to its name – it looks just like a mini dome. That assigns it to the cute and appealing category, and flashy too as our test unit sported a gloss red finish. Measuring 6.5cm in height with a base 7cm in diameter, it is small and fits perfectly into the palm of my hand. On the underside are three non-slip rubber stands to ensure the speaker stays in place. As with other compact portable speakers, the surface is utilitarian and functional, which is a good thing. You’ve got all the requisite functional stuff to operate the device – a power button, a voice call button and mic, an indicator light, and a mini USB port.

Performance Out of the box, the speaker took about 40 minutes to get fully charged. Once it’s at full charge, GoGear claims that music play time is three hours. We put that claim to test and

we’re happy to say that it did managed to last that long, regardless of the volume of the tracks that we blasted through the unit. You can pair the speaker with different types of smart devices. For a small speaker, we were pretty impressed with how it handled the bass and trebles, even with the volume cranked up. Of course, at the insanely high volume levels, sound started to distort and crackling occurred, but that’s to be expected considering the size of the mono woofer. A built-in mic is pretty useful for taking calls whenever you want to free your hands to do other more important stuff. Sound quality for calls is good, with callers’ voices coming off crisp and clear. Another point we would like to highlight is the connectivity range. While max range is claimed to be up to 10m, it depends on factors such as whether your phone’s (if that is the music source) power saver mode is on or not, and whether there are walls or obstacles that break up the connectivity.

Conclusion Aesthetically appealing, portable with great sound considering its size, GoGear’s Sound Dome checks all the boxes for inclusion into your ‘Worth Getting’ shortlist.

EXTREMELY EXTREME

OCTOBER 2015

What’s the most extreme thing you’ve done in your life? Extreme things – you know, those crazy things that you know better than to attempt, or that insane thing that you swear you would never do? Yet sometimes that curious heart of yours becomes irrationally all-consuming and you end up committing those mad acts anyway. This issue, let’s discover just how extreme UniKL students are!

“White water rafting while holidaying in Krabi with three friends. Our raft hit a huge rock and I ended up hitting other rocks, getting trapped under the raft and I couldn’t breathe. It all happened so fast, but luckily I managed to lift up the raft and save myself.”

“Definitely bungee jumping! But when I was there, I couldn’t move as I was very scared. My brother, who was with me, kicked me off the ledge and I thought that was the end of my life. However, after this extreme experience, I realise that I am no longer afraid of heights.”

“I suppose the most extreme thing that I have ever done in my life was to follow my friends to Legoland – and ride on a rollercoaster for the first time in my life! I didn’t expect it to be that scary and I just couldn’t take it.”

THE FOOD CHALLENGE

OCTOBER 2015

n a M vs. d o o F I

n the same way life is a marathon rather than a sprint race, these over-the-top food challenges are all about being slow yet steady. Eating a lot of food to win handsome prizes or even just the honour of finishing it may seem like a dream come true, but if you don’t pace yourself, it would be an accomplishment just to stand up without vomiting around the fifth slice of pizza mark. If you’re still undaunted and have the stomach for it, read on for five massive food challenges in the Klang Valley that you can challenge your guts with.

The Street Cafe’s On Fire Challenge

If your appetite for Korean ramyun is limitless and you like ’em especially spicy, you might just be able to complete this challenge. Featuring the restaurant’s signature On Fire Jumbo Ramyun, many have tried and failed to conquer this sweat-inducing dish, served in a large metal pot. As if the spiciness isn’t enough of a challenge, you are required to finish it within eight minutes to be crowned a winner. Should you prove yourself to be a ramyun conqueror, a photo of you will be hung on The Street Café’s ‘Wall of Fame’, where you will join an elite club of 17 members (so far). You will also nab a lifetime of free drinks at the eatery and shameless bragging rights. If luck (and a strong tongue) is not on your side, you will have to pay for the RM30 ramyun, and agree to have your photo taken and hung up on the ‘Wall of Shame’, as well as the restaurant’s Facebook page. Location: No. 28, Jalan SS15/8, 47500 Subang Jaya (The On Fire Challenge is only available at The Street Café’s branch in SS15) Phone No.: 03-5632 9822 Operating Hours: Every day from 11am – 11pm

Black Forest German Restaurant & Bar’s The Sausage Challenge Wieners rule at this non-halal German restaurant, where participants are required to finish 20 sausages, two side dishes plus a pint of beer in a 12 speedy minutes. You may not think it sounds like much, until you take into consideration that you will be consuming 1.5kg or 3,220 calories within that short period of time. Yup, this ain’t one for the faint stomachs. While it sounds like a glutton fest, it really is more of an endurance test for the fit and healthy, according to Werner Kuhn, who is the founder of Black Forest and CEO of Werner’s Group. “If you watch food eating contests in the West, half of them are neither big nor fat. They are regular gym goers and they come up with new tactics to digest food more efficiently.” So, if you inhale proteins like most people do oxygen, you actually stand a fair chance at winning this. What do the winners get, you ask? Their triumphant faces on the Wall of Fame, plus an exclusive Champion T-Shirt, and the cost of their sumptuous meal waived. Location: 47, Changkat Bukit Bintang, 50200, KL Phone: 03-2148 0511 Operating Hours: Sun – Thurs 4pm – 1am; Fri and Sat 4pm – 3am

Chilli Rush’s Chilli Rush Challenge

Apparently spiciness is a recurring theme in these food challenges, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what kind of trial awaits you at Chilli Rush. Here, you can indulge in your favourite chicken wings that range from Levels 1 to 10, with 10 being the hottest. These meaty bites are seasoned with peppers that have varying ranks on the Scoville Pepper Scale, which measures the pungency of chilli peppers or spicy foods. At Level 10, which is simply titled Chilli Rush, you get to enjoy your wings with a dash of north-eastern India’s Naga Jolokia, which is the world’s hottest by far. Should you survive the challenge, you will get your face up on the Wall of Fame, similar to the others on this list. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time on the toilet bowl afterwards. Location: 93-G, Block H, Jaya One, No 72A, Jalan Universiti, 46200 Petaling Jaya Phone No.: 03-79607368 Operating Hours: Mon – Sat 11.30am – 11pm

Mikey’s Original New York Pizza’s The 9-1-1 Pizza Challenge

To a lot of us: pizza is love and pizza is life. That said, do you think your love affair would be able to withstand a test this massive? Coming in at 18 inches with a sprinkling of spicy bhut jolokia and local cili padi, the pizza will get the most lionhearted of pizza lovers gasping for a glass of milk minutes into the challenge. You are also advised not to touch your face, eyes or nose during or after – that is, if you want to keep your senses intact. That said, the lights awaiting you at the end of the tunnel are good enough to inspire anyone to try harder: a voucher from Mikey’s, a Mikey’s T-shirt, Mikey’s baseball cap, a photo on the Wall of Fame and last but not least, RM500 in cash. Just finish the entire pizza singlehandedly in 40 minutes.Good thing drinks are provided free of charge during this ring of fire for your digestive system. Location: 17, Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar, KL Phone No.: 03-2202 0080 Operating Hours: Every day from 12pm – 11pm

FEARLESS IN THE KITCHEN

OCTOBER 2015

MARCUS

LOWTURNS UP THE HEAT

E

veryone knows that Malaysians adore their food, but here’s one guy who has taken it a step further. He’s taken his love for cooking and eating right into the infamous MasterChef kitchen. The 24-year-old banker Marcus Low may spend his days pouring over numbers, but outside of that, he loves making food for his friends and family, experimenting with different techniques and plating skills. His exquisite dishes and love for desserts are well-known among the judges on the show. While there’s no Gordon Ramsey hurling insults at the contestants (we’re sure there were sighs of relief from them), the MasterChef Asia judges – Hong Kongborn chef Susur Lee, three-Michelin starred chef Bruno Ménard and former MasterChef Australia finalist Audra Morrice – are forces to be reckoned with. We spoke to Marcus to find out what fires up his culinary passions and what being under pressure in the Masterchef Kitchen was like.

ON MARCUS’ LOVE FOR COOKING… My love for food stems from me being in a family that has a really strong love for food. Family gatherings have been all about great food and I have always wanted to make great food. In addition, my mother loves to cook and that helped me discover my love for creating food too.

ON HIS STYLE OF COOKING… My style of cooking is predominantly using local ingredients and making it into a modern-style dessert. I enjoy my sweets but I love dessert with different dimensions of

flavour – not just sweet all the way or with only a soft cakey texture all the way.

like me and his vision and his ideas on food are very interesting.

WHY HE JOINED MASTERCHEF ASIA…

THE FOOD DREAM…

I have always been a fan of MasterChef. I used to watch the show during my university years in Australia where MasterChef Australia was like a religion there and people tuned in to it all the time. What I would do after watching each episode was to then try what they did. I was fairly successful most of the time, so I thought to myself, why not try out for the show now that it’s here in Asia?

I would probably go on to open my very own pastry/dessert shop. Perhaps one day I would like to help build one of the top restaurants in the world here in Malaysia. I want to put Malaysia’s name on the fine dining scene here in Asia and in the world.

HOW HE FELT WHEN HEN HE WAS SELECTED TO JOIN… I was ecstatic! I have always imagined myself to be on the show! It seems that now my dreams and wishes have come true.

WHAT THE COMPETITION ON WAS LIKE… To me, cooking under pressure and under the strict time constraint was always going to be an issue. It is tough that we as home cooks who under normal circumstances would be cooking in the comfort of our own homes where we know it like the back of our hand; now we have to cook in a totally new environment and three judges looking into every detail of our dishes!

MasterChef Asia premiers on 3 September, every Thursday at 9pm on Lifetime (Astro Ch 709)

CELEBRITY CHEFS HE ADMIRES… Definitely Heston Blumenthal, because one day I would like to have an established restaurant like him. He is a self-taught chef just

ossibly the most inspiring place in the whole of Malaysia right now, Penang seems to have really come together to wow not only foreigners, but the ever blasé Malaysian traveller too. When was the last time you visited the island? If your last trip has not been in the last five years, then a journey to Georgetown is well worth it, and if we must say, a tad overdue! The Aussie café/ bistro culture has traversed the borders of the Klang Valley and exploded massively in Georgetown. Most notable is China House on 153, Lebuh Pantai which has the characteristic narrow layout, offers a plethora of scrumptious cakes and sweet pies. Journey on and you’ll see the

café open up to an unexpected courtyard that offers al fresco dining right beside a pond that’s beautifully uplit at night against the potted trees. At the end of China House is a bar that hosts live bands on weekends and at night. Right across the street from the China House bar is Sekeping Victoria with Awesome Canteen in its foyer - another great spot to seek sanctuary from the heat and bustle outside, while tucking into some delicious Aussie style burgers. We particularly loved the blue cheese beef burger and Paleo menu. A b&b style accommodation is on offer within the walls of Sekeping Victoria – an option better for those who prioritise central location over privacy. OCT 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

It was a short trip for us, but we still managed to cram in (hehe) the famous asam laksa from Joo Hooi kopitiam, and just in the alley outside, the Famous Penang Road Teochew Chendul; Ah Leng Char Koay Teow, which is unique because she fries mantis prawns in the dish; the pungent and lipsmackingly delicious Ayer Itam Asam Laksa; Hokkien Mee (which is Prawn Mee to the regular Klang Valley resident), Penang lorbak, and the most amazing Or Chien (oyster omelette) this writer has ever had at Bee Hooi Kopitiam on Burma Road; and finally at the Padang Tembak food court, we had the Lorbak, Hokkien Mee, Asam Laksa and Nasi Lemak Daun that tastes so much better than it looks.

It’s hard to decide what to do when you have such limited time on the island.
