It’s Getting Hot In Here!

A

nd it’s not just the weather, mind you. We’re right smack in the middle of summer (then again, it’s summer throughout the year here in Malaysia), and it’s been hot on all fronts – the days, the nights, new product launches, nude hikers, you get the idea.

So we’re jumping into another hot topic this month, just to crank the heat up. It’s none other than pornography consumption and its addiction (Cover Story, pages 46 – 49). No, we’re not judging, but with the prevalence of pornography in this day and age, access to it is very easy, and unchecked consumption of it leads to addiction. Are you a porn addict? Is it affecting your daily routine? Find out by taking a short quiz included in the story. On another front, eSports is fast becoming a hot new thing amongst our local gamers. Read all about it in our eSports feature on pages 50 and 51.

RM25,000 Raised For Charity Through Taylor’s College’s CXP Run

Pearson Malaysia MoU With MOHR

Signs

Taylor’s College, through its ‘CXP Run’ event has successfully raised RM25,000 for Yayasan Ozanam. Taking place recently at Taylor’s College Subang Jaya, over 1200 participants converged on the SS15 Subang Jaya area for the 3km, 5km and 10km run in support of raising funds for Yayasan Ozanam, a registered non-profit, voluntary welfare organisation caring for the neglected, abused, abandoned and orphaned children of Malaysia. Taylor’s College President, Lim Tou Boon said, “Our students were able to attract 1,200 runners for the ‘CXP Run’, which in itself was a commendable achievement given that they had set a target of 800 participants. The proceeds from this run will benefit as many as 300 underprivileged children, giving them the opportunity to benefit from collaborative learning experiences during the weekends.” The Organising Chairperson for the event, Tan Yong Yi also shared that they are very glad to have managed to surpass their initial target of raising RM10,000, adding, “With these funds, we can provide better learning experiences for a bigger group of children and promote awareness about the importance of holistic education for underprivileged children.” The ‘CXP Run’ is part of Taylor’s College Classroom Xperience project, which is a community service initiative first started in 2013. This year, students have divided the project into three primary divisions: ‘CXP Run’ (fundraising), CXP Long-term project (weekly visits to the homes) and CXP Event (public awareness and participation) to better expand the reach and vision of the project. The project is also a collaborative effort between the Taylor’s College Rotaract Club, Welfare and Charity Keen Youth (WACKY) and student volunteers.

Pearson Malaysia recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) to further elevate Pearson professionals’ recognition in the industry and its qualifications holders in the workforce. The MoU adds credibility to Pearson’s offerings while at the same time supports the national agenda of producing more Malaysians with higher education qualifications. This is in line with the goal of forging quality Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates, as emphasised in the latest Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015. Pearson’s Head of Partner Markets – Asia, Steven McGill said, “We are dedicated towards building the country’s human capital in all aspects, particularly in TVET, allowing Malaysians to pursue careers of their interest and contributing towards the national economic growth. This partnership with Pearson Malaysia will be able to further accelerate in achieving the government’s aspirations of increasing access to and enrolment in higher education by 2025.” The partnership will enable Pearson’s BTEC, LCCI, ASSURED and NCCER to gain certification by the Malaysian Skills Certification System (SPKM), as well as the inclusion of Pearson professionals as part of the National Industry Experts Directory (DPIN). Pearson Malaysia’s Senior Manager of Qualifications and Key Accounts, Siva Prakash believes that Pearson will be able to contribute towards the nation’s aspirations in producing a well-learned society, “As individuals with our qualifications will not only be more recognised in the industry but also stand better employment and career advancement opportunities.” Pearson is UK’s largest academic and vocational awarding organisation and its Pearson Qualification Services develop and support the full range of Edexcel, BTEC and EDI qualifications. Its BTEC qualification has over 30 years of history and is offered in more than 45 countries, helping over 2.5 million learners worldwide.

APU and IBM Join Forces To Nurture Next Generation Workforce The Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) together with IBM Malaysia have recently announced an academic collaboration to develop the next generation of technology savvy graduates via the sharing of skills, knowledge and best practices. Under the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), APU will expand the scope of its curriculum to include the latest IBM technologies in mobile application design and development, cloud computing, analytics and security. IBM on its part will be providing the relevant software, courseware, instructor training, teaching topics and professional certification to both lecturers and students undertaking the IBM related curriculum. This will equip APU with current expertise and knowledge that’s in line with the latest IT industry requirements, thus preparing its students better when they join the workforce. Both parties are, of course, delighted with the partnership. IBM Malaysia’s chief financial officer, Wong Chiun Chiek said, “The collaboration with Asia Pacific University reinforces IBM’s commitment to develop a future ready workforce to meet the demand for graduates with skills in data analytics, mobile application development and cloud computing.” The Deputy Vice Chancellor of APU, Professor Ron Edwards echoes this sentiment, “The IBM partnership provides yet another opportunity for APU students to connect with industry and prepare for professional life. APU applauds IBM for their far-sighted initiative.” APU has been collaborating with IBM since 2011 on academic initiatives to deliver IBM professional certification courses to equip students with industry relevant knowledge. Qualified students are then offered internships at IBM or its business partners.

KDU University College’s students were imparted a wealth of knowledge and information on quitting smoking in the first four months of 2015. The institution’s Health and Wellness Centre under the Student and Alumni Centre (SAC) organised a quit smoking campaign during that period, in efforts to get students and staff alike to quit the habit and lead healthier lifestyles. Many insightful and helpful talks and exhibitions were held in KDU’s Utropolis Glenmarie and Damansara Jaya campuses, and its most recent ‘Stop Smoking and Start Saving’ talk held on 8th April at the Utropolis Glenmarie campus saw experienced clinical hypnotherapist Ko Teik Yen sharing on the financial benefits of quitting smoking. He also touched on the key steps involved in quitting the stick; which are reason, strategy, skill, trick and plan, combined with the 4D strategy of Delay, Deep breathing with self-relaxation, Drinking more water and Distraction by doing something else. Over in the Damansara Jaya campus, Registered Counsellor under Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (the Malaysia Board of Counsellors) Lim Dao Yong gave a talk to the campus’ students on the ‘Psychological Strategies of Quitting Smoking’. He shared some techniques to quit smoking such as identifying and eliminating physical and psychological triggers and stimuli. He also went on to encourage smokers to take an active role themselves in finding out the potential benefits and the consequences of continued smoking. Other than the talks, there were exhibitions held that touched on the downside and negative effects of the nicotine habit, as well as on the habitual behaviours that lower the quality of a smoker’s life.

Sunway University Honours Teachers With “Oscars”

Sunway University’s Centre for Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary (CTHCM) students from both the Diploma in Events Management and Diploma in Hotel Management courses organised a glittering “The Oscars” event as part of Sunway University’s Teachers Day celebration. The event saw the participation of over 200 teachers, principals and counsellors from several schools in the Klang Valley, and culminated in ten teachers taking home an “Oscar” for being the Best Teacher. This was to honour and pay tribute to dedicated members of the teaching profession for the tireless contribution, hard work and support put in throughout the years. Sunway University’s Senior Executive Director, Dr Elizabeth Lee paid her tribute when addressing the teachers; “Your role is not an easy one. But I’m sure you will agree with me that teaching has its many rewards, especially when you see the transformation of your students into competent and responsible individuals. In your classrooms are future leaders. The responsibility of shaping the leaders of tomorrow lies very much in your hands.” Naturally, the CTCHM students were grateful for the opportunity in having a part towards organising the event. From the planning, managing of finances to the preparation of the decoration, props and food, it was a great hands-on learning experience for all of them.

The Four Rings To Take A Shot At F1? German carmaker, Audi is being tempted to make an entrance into the competitive world of Formula One (F1). Its chief executive, Rupert Stadler was quoted recently on Britain’s Auto Express magazine that F1 ‘remains an option for Audi’, saying, “In life you must keep things open. We’re already well stuffed with successful motorsports projects. But with F1, wait and see. It’s an option for Audi. Not at this moment, perhaps. But it is still an option.” Speculation on whether Audi might be tempted into F1 has been circulating for the last few years, but has picked up pace now that Ferdinand Piech has resigned as chairman of Audi’s parent company Volkswagen. Piech was known to be strongly against the brand joining F1. The speculation gathered further pace right after the Spanish GP in mid-May when Red Bull motorsports consultant Helmut Marko made comments akin to an open invitation to Audi. “If we

don’t have a competitive engine in the near future, then either Audi is coming or we are out,” the Austrian commented on BBC. It’s hardly surprising that Marko made such an open comment in light of Red Bull F1 team’s well-publicised unhappiness with their current engine provider, Renault. They’ve been vocal in their criticism of Renault’s V6 turbo hybrid engine which has proved uncompetitive this season, compared to Mercedes and Ferrari.

Stevie G Leaving The Reds for Another Galaxy

The LA Galaxy football team, to be precise. Loyal Liverpool icon and playmaker Steven Gerrard is set to leave Anfield this summer to start a new journey in America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) after signing up with LA Galaxy. Affectionately known to fans as Stevie G, the 35-year-old Liverpool skipper admitted that he was leaving his beloved club of 15 years as he fears not being a regular starter in future Liverpool games. “I think the signs this year were that I’m going to become a squad player, play less – I’m going to come on as a sub and the buzz changes. For me, I go to work on a Monday morning and I look forward to Saturday, to prepare to go to battle with some wonderful people – with good mates – and that’s my buzz.” He let on that Liverpool FC’s manager, Brendan Rodgers recently informed him that changes are coming and that his playing time for the team would become more limited. That little talk set him on the path of reconsidering his future with the club. “It’s not a selfish thing; coming on as a sub’s just not the same buzz. So things have changed this year – and there are signs that it’s the right time to go.” The number 8 midfielder will be reunited with his former England teammate Frank Lampard when he is playing in the MLS this summer. So for Gerrard, it’ll be a case of “he’ll never walk alone” when he’s at LA Galaxy. 22

hile fashion magazines and television are tried-and-tested ways to follow trends, we’re now living in a world inundated by social media, so it only makes sense that we would look to Instagram for a constant, abundant flow of street style inspiration. Whatever you want to look like, or whoever you feel like being today, is just a hashtag away. Now that we’re on the topic of androgynous chic, let’s take a look at some of the movers and shakers of today who are shaping tomboy style with every photo they upload.

1. Erika Linder (@richiephoenix) If she reminds you of someone but you can’t put a finger on it, it’s probably young, Titanicera Leonardo DiCaprio. Confused? We aren’t, because we’re too busy growing our girl crush on this blue eyed, brown haired androgynous model from Sweden. Her Instagram is filled with gender bending behind-the-scenes snapshots of photo shoots, runway shows, and hipster-rific, moody selfies. Style-wise, Erika has the art of androgynous chic down to an art, rocking leather jackets, skinny jeans and a fierce ‘smize’. Once she gets into her broody poses, she settles effortlessly into a level of soft masculinity that most androgynous chic followers can only dream of.

2. Emily Cocklin (@emilycocklin) A 20 year-old sometime fashion blogger and full time graphic designer, Emily’s creative roots bleed profusely into the minimally styled yet eye catching #OOTD shots that grace her Instagram profile. The stark backgrounds that most of her outfits are set in only bring them out more, and it’s a style that obviously works as Emily has garnered 52.3k followers to date. She is solid proof that you don’t have to imitate a guy completely to rock androgynous chic, as Emily balances her simple, boyish ensembles with a head of lustrous mermaid locks and bright, flawless makeup.

3. Ari Fitz (@itsarifitz) If you like your style guides on Youtube, Ari Fitz is a name you should subscribe to. The fashionable vlogger is the creator of Tomboyish, a web series based on her daily looks and how she coordinates them. Referring to her aesthetic as tomboy-ish (hence the name), Ari has also filmed videos highlighting fellow tomboys from London and Berlin, bringing the androgynous-loving fashion community a little closer. On her Instagram, Ari flaunts a variety of hairstyles, from long dreadlocks to funky afro buns. Her sense of style is neither steadfastly 26

masculine nor feminine, as she might wear a midriff baring crop top one day and a blazer, beanie and denim all at once the next.

2

4. Ruby Rose (@rubyrose) The cast of hit TV series ‘Orange Is The New Black’ is set to get even more attractive once Australian model Ruby Rose debuts in Season 3, what with her piercing eyes and even sharper cheekbones. Her jet black pixie cut and tattoo-laden shoulders make her recognisable anywhere, as well as her too-cool-for-school swagger. That goes on full display in her Instagram, where she shares intimate looks into her personal life, fierce photo shoot outtakes and the occasional rib-tickling meme. Side slit tank tops, layered gold chains and simple white tanks that show off her tattoos feature most prominently in her shots, but Ruby looks just as pretty in more amped up outfits like suits and silk dresses.

3

5. Rain Dove (@raindovemodel) In case you’re wondering, that is her real name. As you can tell, Rain Dove is not your everyday Victoria’s Secret model. Due to her square jawline and tall figure (187cm to be exact!), Rain Dove is able to model for menswear, women’s wear and everything in between too. Off duty, she experiments with a variety of styles that play off her feminine and masculine traits, whether that’s a full suit or seductive lingerie. Unwaveringly proud of her duality, she is a worthy follow on your Instagram not just for her bada** aesthetic, but also for her bravery in owning who she is.

Spotlight on Raffles college

JULY 2015

Begin To Rise

B

egin - it heralds the start of something new, and perhaps something great. Maybe that was why the latest graduation showcase of Raffles College of Higher Education was named just that. The latest graduates of Raffles College’s Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design definitely seemed poised for greater things ahead when they packed the Mayang Sari Ballroom at the JW Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur with their fivepiece collections. Twenty aspiring designers sent their garments down the runway, which were breathed life into by lanky models. The clothes displayed ranged from edgy to feminine to glamorous, but shared one common trait: top notch workmanship. By the end of the evening, it was time to announce the 2nd runner up, 1st runner up and champion. Nabil Volkers and his collection, ‘Disturbed’, emerged in 3rd place, while Serene Foo came in 2nd, with her ‘Replicated Reflection’ collection. The grand winner of the night was Michelle Lau Hui Yi, who wowed the judges with her collection, ‘Ivy’. Apart from these outstanding collections, we’ve also handpicked a few extra favourites by some of the other graduates. Here they are in all their glory:

#5 Rhythme, by Caren Chan Ka Yen It’s hard not to look at this vibrant ensemble and not smile. As colourful it is, there is still a visible structure to the whole look, so you won’t be drowning in the prints even if you wear this from head to toe. The palette here also complements warm Asian skin tones, and the silhouette is one that won’t ever go out of style.

#4 Scarlet Novella, by Yong Chui Teng

28

| CAMPUS PLUS

Autumn leaves and expert tailoring come together to present a collection that is unabashedly romantic and evocative of the fall season. The prints are beautifully contrasted against stark white backgrounds, with feminine silhouettes that any girly girl would love to be seen in.

#3 Disturbed, by Nabil Volkers Feelings of anger and insecurity are translated artfully into dark, cutting edge garments in this collection by second runner up Nabil Volkers. The elements and silhouettes are exaggerated as if to emphasise the emotions overwhelming the designer at the time, leaving a strong visual impact on the viewer.

#2 Replicated Reflection, by Serene Foo Inspired by the puddles of a bustling city that reflect its lights and people, first runner up Serene Foo works them into eye catching patterns in shades of red, yellow and black. Athletic pieces are coordinated with classic feminine separates to form a collection that is unique and modern.

#1 Ivy, by Michelle Lau Hui Yi Women’s wear dominated the Begin catwalk, but ultimately it was Michelle Lau’s menswear collection ‘Ivy’ that took home the big prize of the night. Said to embody the spirit of ‘intellect, elitism and tradition’, the designs showed appropriate restraint and creativity, resulting in clothes that were simple with subtle edgy details.

The Holy Grail of W

Cosmetics

e believe that everyone has a distinctive and inborn beauty that lies within. And we’re pretty sure that a lot of you keep buying and trying out a large amount of cosmetic products to play up that beauty. Unfortunately, many a times we’ve fallen into the cosmetics industry’s trap again and again in our quest for the right beauty product. A voice whispers in your ear whenever you find something that works for you, “Maybe this is the perfect product that’s specifically designed for my needs.” But the truth is something like that doesn’t exist. There is no perfect product. Searching for it is a fool’s errand. Despite past disappointments, we are still believers in the power of cosmetics as they unmistakably give us a boost of confidence to get through a long, hard day. Try for a moment to forget the failures and think about the cosmetics that you’ve never abandoned but continually find yourself always going back to, despite having tried dozens of others. Those products you’ve thought of are your ‘Holy Grail’ cosmetics because you rely on them to help you look better and make you confident enough to leave your house without scaring anyone away. It may not be a perfect product to you, but it is close enough to being one. We all have our personal ‘Holy Grail’ cosmetics and it varies between everyone. It’s subjective. What works for others might not work for you, and vice versa. However, there are some products that are universally loved and have been crowned as must-have “Holy Grail” cosmetics. Read on and see if any of them are in your beauty cabinet now!

Fanbo HOI TONG Pressed Powder

Surprise! Who would have thought that something used by your grandmother or mother would be in this list too? This traditional pressed powder is developed from ancient Chinese formulation that makes your skin look lighter. It’s a very simple pressed powder as it doesn’t contain too many ingredients with unpronounceable names. What’s more, it can be used as a facial mask too when mixed with some sterile water. Don’t just stand there and take our word for it, go and try it!

CLINIQUE Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+

Wouldn’t it be great if your skin was moisturised and hydrated all day long? If you’re a loyal fan of this product or have tried it before, surely you’ve experienced the amazingly silky and creamy texture that it brings to your skin. But what makes it better is it helps in strengthening your skin’s moisture barrier by 54%, locking moisture in and making your skin look younger. Tip: use on cleansed and exfoliated skin twice a day for better absorption. 30

Maybelline Great Lash Washable Mascara

Known as America’s favourite mascara, this lash-building brush enables you to glide on smoothly with its lash-doubling formula to have well-defined, fluffy lashes that flawlessly frame your eyes. Besides the washable version, it’s also available in Waterproof and Curved Brush versions to suit your needs. For us, we preferred the washable version because it can be easily removed with soap and water or with eye makeup remover.

NARS Orgasm Blush Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner

What are the things that you’re looking for in an eye liner? Waterproof? Check. Long-lasting? Check. Easy to use? Check. Glides on smoothly with ease? Check. Quick dry? Check. It has everything that you want, how can it not be in the ‘Holy Grail’ cosmetics list? This thin, marker-like tip is extremely userfriendly, even for the beauty beginner and it delivers any look that you want, from a thin line to a bold, dramatic stroke. Topping that is 15 colours for you to create versatile beauty looks!

A perfectly natural pinky-peach flush with extra dose of golden sparkle is definitely the ideal flush for anyone as it brightens and rejuvenates the complexion. Furthermore, it makes your cheeks look healthy with the radiant afterglow effect. A total of 30 colours are available for you to choose from too! They are specially formulated to flatter any skin tone. In other words, it will look good on just about everybody.

L’OREAL PARIS Elnett Satin Hairspray Strong Hold

We believe that a perfect hairstyle is as important as flawless makeup as it will also give you a boost of confidence. L’oreal’s Elnett Satin is known as the legendary hairspray for red carpet events and cover photo shoots as its micro-diffuser spray provides a clean, soft and shiny finish. Amazingly, it can hold your ideal hairstyle in place all day long!

Benefit benetint cheek & lip stain

Are you still looking for the sexiest flush for your lips and cheeks? If yes, then we’re proud to say that your search is over. Benefit benetint cheek & lip stain provides you the sexiest flush that you’ve always lusted for. This original rose-tinted stain is kiss-proof and smudge-proof. It gives an innocent yet provocative glow to keep everyone guessing what you’re up to. Put it on now and bring all the boys back!

So, do you have any of these ‘Holy Grail’ cosmetics in your beauty cabinet? Have you tried any of them? If you haven’t yet, you probably should, to see whether they deserve to be in the list or not. However, if you have tried them before and none of them are in your ‘Holy Grail’ cosmetics list, then feel free to share yours with us! We are super curious what’s on your list too. conceal and heal with miacare

JULY 2015

Miacare’s Got Your Acne Covered U

ntoward incidents almost always happen on that crucial night before a hot date or some other grand event where you would like to make yourself as perfectly presentable as ever. You find yourself staring straight at that big red acne in the mirror, figuring out a way to get rid of it. It’s near impossible to get rid of it on such short notice, so the best way that I can think of is to cover it. You’re also worried whether applying makeup on your face will make the acne worse. But fret not, miacare has got you covered. It’s true that excessive makeup will make your acne worse, but here’s the trick – you have to find an acne concealer that will not clog pores or worsen the condition of your skin. And yes, such a concealer does exist and besides covering your acne, it also helps in relieving redness and inflammation. It’s called the miacare AcneDefense Concealer Stick, and I am excited to share its effectiveness with you. After trying out a number of concealers, I am happy that I finally found the right one that covers my acne with ease. According to its marketing claims, miacare’s Acne-Defense Concealer Stick is specially created to treat acne and cover blemishes. With its advanced technology and patented Ac.net ingredient (which is extracted from olive leaves), it helps in clearing acne by reducing sebum efficiently. If you have kept an eye on this section, you would be aware that touching your face with your hands is a no-no. Thus, miacare has come up with this rotary pen design so you can avoid from touching your face with your hands and further irritate the acne area. With this design, you can now truly and safely cover your acne with ease.

32

| CAMPUS PLUS

What’s my verdict? It has my stamp of approval. I have been using it in my previous events and people hardly noticed my acne. It has done its job of reducing the visibility of the acne magnificently. In fact, my acne has slowly disappeared over time. However, it would be better if they could offer more shades for this concealer stick as one shade will not suit all skin tones. Fortunately, my skin tone is slightly dark, thus it blends into my skin pretty well, giving me an amazing coverage.

I believe that this concealer stick wouldn’t be able to cover everyone’s acne because it has only one shade after all and there are so many of you who have different skin tones. But fear not, you can still cover your acne with miacare’s Acne Patch and apply makeup on it after that. No one will notice your acne at all. Plus, the Acne Patch goes on to heal your acne affected area. Sounds remarkable, doesn’t it? If you’re like me and have light/medium skin tone, go get yourself a miacare’s Acne-Defense Concealer Stick at RM24.90 (1.2g) to receive a total acne coverage. But if you have a lighter skin tone, then I’d recommend their Acne Patch Day 12’s and Acne Patch Night 12’s at RM9.70 each; and the Acne Patch Mix, which contains nine Acne Patch Day and nine Acne Patch Night at RM13.70 at any Watsons store nationwide to get your acne covered. Don’t forget to share your thoughts with me. Happy covering!

Jewellery for Guys

JULY 2015

Heavy T

his month, we brave yet another less charted territory of men’s fashion. It can be an accessory, or a statement. It doesn’t have to be sparkly, but it will be eye-catching if worn the right way. Have you latched on to what we’re talking about yet? It’s men’s jewellery, and we are about to school you on how to wear it like a boss. First up, like most departments in menswear, keep it simple. Although it might seem easy to hit all the right style notes as a guy, it’s also surprisingly easy to fall into the trap of overaccessorising and overdressing. Your man bling doesn’t need a lot of details; most of the time it just needs a sleek design and one type of metal. Speaking of metals, never wear more than one metal in one outfit. Gold and silver will clash, and that goes for both boys and girls. Other than that, see if you can bring out a little more of your personality by wearing something that says ‘you’. As jewellery is an uncommon male accessory, wearing it draws more attention to you, and therefore, your (hopefully!) likeable personality. It’s also important to know which types of jewellery befit the occasion you’re headed for. If it’s a black tie event, lose the Hawaiian-inspired shark tooth necklaces and settle for some fine cufflinks. Now that we’ve hit you with a few ‘golden’ (pun totally intended) principles of jewellery wearing, here are some dandy selections to send you on your way.

Necklaces

(or chains, if you prefer) Do wear it modestly by wearing it under, not over your shirt, and stay away from overtly flashy pendants and ‘gangsta’ chains unless you wanna get robbed.

Bracelets Do wear it with a watch in the same type of strap (leather/metal/cloth) to complement it.

hese guys have been bold enough to carve out their own public persona, and wear their individuality on their sleeves, or faces. As a result, they exude an unsurpassed confidence and ease. With a mental cocktail that potent, it doesn’t matter whether you’re facing the paparazzi at a red carpet or simply walking down the street - you own what you wear, and that automatically makes whatever you wear look smashing. Even if it’s jewellery - a hard to wear and often feared aspect of men’s style. So, if you’re looking to take the plunge and adopt some (fancy) hardware, who better to inspire you than some of Hollywood’s most well established trendsetters? Here are three of them.

1. Pharrell Apart from his vibrant ad for Uniqlo and signature hat at the 2014 Grammys, the singer-songwriter/rapper/producer’s sense of style also shows in his affinity for quirky jewellery - lots of it. His love for bling is such that he even collaborated with luxury brand Louis Vuitton on a line of fine jewellery called Blason. However, that was in 2008, and since then the hit maker has toned down his style considerably and has stated he now only wears jewellery with ‘medicinal and holistic properties’.

Pharrell used to favour more show stopping statement necklaces like this one.

Eventually, he shifted towards jewellery that shone in a different way.

One of the extravagant designs in the ‘Blason’ jewellery line.

2. David Beckham

Ever the sleek dresser with a bit of edge, Beckham shows some personality in the dapper getup with orange beaded bracelets.

The former England footballer showed off toned abs, two armfuls of tattoos (which have tripled since) and a love for necklaces in Vanity Fair’s July 2004 issue.

Although he doesn’t wear them as much as he used to, Beckham used to carry a variety of earrings, such as this dazzling platinum pair.

The fashion conscious athlete may have gotten most of his style cues from wife Victoria, but it’s undeniable that he has carved out quite the look for himself over the years. He can pull off ruggedly casual looks or bespoke suits, and even better, work a little bit of jewellery into them. His keen eye for the chic has seen him model and design clothes (and underwear!) for giant fast fashion brand H&M, and the man who coined the term ‘metrosexual’ hailed him as the ultimate personification of the term. Because how many men could pull off a classic suit with beaded bracelets?

3. Taeyang The boys of Big Bang aren’t exactly known for dialling back on the craziness, and Taeyang is no different. Their flamboyance doesn’t just start and stop at their music videos; the K-Pop idols are just as loud in real life, with brightly coloured hair, kaleidoscopic prints and megawatt jewellery being their forte. Taeyang’s sense of style is equally chaotic, though no less inspiring in its devil-may-care approach. However, in his unpredictability, the dancer cum singer has also been known to strip away (most) of the makeup and hair dye and let his talent do the talking.

Even in off duty mode, Taeyang keeps his metal game strong with his ever present earrings, rings and metal cuffs.

Primped up to the nines, Taeyang is dressed to kill in the video for Big Bang’s Ringa Linga music video with a platinum blonde mohawk, gold brocade jacket and multiple ear piercings.

Taeyang delivered the heartfelt ballad ‘Eyes, Nose, Lips’ wearing a cap, (relatively) toned down bling and not much else.

ALBUM RELEASES AND REVIEWS

JULY 2015

REVIEWS

HAIRLESS TOYS Róisín Murphy

It has been hard to wait for her follow up album after her 2007 album, Overpowered. Eight years has passed, and we almost heard nothing about her upcoming album that she initially announced to be released in 2008 and it made us worried at that time. However, the wait is over. She is back with her eight-track album, Hairless Toys. ‘Evil Eyes’ is definitely one of our favourite songs on the entire album.

THE LONGEST RIVER OLIVIA CHANEY

If you’re into the folk genre like us, then you will surely love Olivia Chaney. This Florence-born, Oxfordgrown and London-based talented singer, pianist, guitarist and songwriter has released another beautiful album again after two years. The Longest River is a delicate and captivating collection of traditional folk music that is pastoral. Embrace Chaney’s mix of sweet melodies with complex lyrics.

38

| CAMPUS PLUS

It is an uplifting song that mixes bass guitar riffs with an electronic backdrop that will easily capture your heart! That feeling was replicated again in ‘Uninvited Guest’. Though it lacks the bass guitar riff that ‘Evil Eyes’ has, it is still amazingly addictive as it replaces that with a jazz groove and ad-lib vocalisations sung behind Murphy’s voice. In the end, it is an album that we wouldn’t expect from Murphy as she has changed direction completely. However, this album has also exceeded our expectations of the singer. We are impressed with her new and distinctive charm. To all the Murphy fans out there, you will love the brand new Murphy!

The introductory track, ‘False Bride’ is a beautiful piece of song as it illustrates the pastoral feeling effectively. We love Chaney’s lovely, silky and emotional vocals in this song, making it magical to listen to. The picture of the countryside is gone when we moved on to ‘Imperfection’. It is a more contemporary style of folk song, but it tells us an amazing story with its detailed lyrics and creative piano as accompaniment. We fell in love with Chaney’s vocals once again. The Longest River is an enchanting and breathtaking exploration of folk songs. But what makes this album so intriguing is the distinctive melodies and song accompaniment. Chaney has transformed the future of folk music by going back to its simplistic past. There’s no reason for not getting this soulful album.

LOVE SOMEBODY REBA MCENTIRE

After five long years, the country music superstar has returned with her twenty-seventh studio album, Love Somebody. Partnering again with experienced producers Tony Brown, James Stroud and Doug Sisemore, they have listened to thousands of songs to get the right one for this album. Also, being said as one of the strongest albums she has released in more than twenty years, we can’t wait to listen

northern folk jenny lysander

Jenny Lysander is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter. We wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t know anything about her as she has just released her debut album, Northern Folk, with a total of 12 tracks awaiting us. However, with her immense musical talent, she is already being compared to a number of legendary folk artists. Lysander immediately forms a connection between our aural sensation

to this album, which has a total of 12 new songs (14, if you buy the Target exclusive version). ‘Going Out Like That’ opens the album with powerful and inspiring vocals accompanied by a heavy drum beat and electric guitar. The instruments pair with the lyrics nicely, as it is about how a female pursue her happiness and freedom after heartbreak instead of dwelling on the past. The following track, ‘Enough’ has captured our attention as the combination of Jennifer Nettles and McEntire’s vocals take this song to a whole new level. Overall, it is an album that tells us numerous stories that most of us have experienced in life. It is definitely a great album that you would want to listen to whenever you are feeling down or lost. Go grab it!

and visual imagination with the opening track, ‘A Painter’s Brush’. We can immediately build an image in our mind, which is the landscape of harsh snow and long winters. The gentle guitars, melancholic voice and unusual woodwinds lightens the tone to regain the balance of the track. Next is the simple yet beautiful track, ‘Giving Thanks’. It is an ideal lullaby that can easily put someone to sleep serenely, with nary a worry about what will happen next. Lysander’s album is a confident example of modern folk that could make listeners conjure up familiar and vivid, timeless scenery in their minds effortlessly. It’s a must have, beautiful, simple and enjoyable album that makes us look forward to Lysander’s future work.

Who’s The Man Behind

Gentle Bones? “I wish I knew more about the back end stuff that comes with being a star. I didn’t realise that there’s a lot of back end stuff to support an artist.” Why the name Gentle Bones? When I was 16, I was in a rock band and I was the youngest member. Therefore, I didn’t really have any creative control in the band. So I just felt like I needed to step away and go into my bedroom and just record, play the acoustic guitar and write songs with a mic that my dad bought me. And that gave birth to Gentle Bones and the name just stuck with me ever since.

in having the music speak for itself as I am always a big fan of different kinds of genres. And I guess I’m just trying to translate the very raw, very straightforward kind of emotions as well as the heartbreak feelings that torment us into a specific sound. The whole soundscape’s idea is like big gang vocals, huge strings, huge orchestral and sounds. This encompasses the whole idea of what Gentle Bones is about.

What are you working on now? I am currently working on promoting the first extended play that I put up because it exceeded all my expectations and dreams in Singapore. So I just wanted to be able to push it out overseas and see where it stands in the international market. But I am also working on writing new stuff, playing shows overseas, spreading the music around and defining myself as a local Singaporean artist and hopefully reaching out to more people.

What was the biggest challenge you’ve encountered so far? I guess the biggest challenge was to not know what you would want to achieve out of the music and just striving blindly. Basically, with this extended play, I didn’t know what I could really achieve and I spent a lot of money investing, recording the songs, filming the music videos, preparing the marketing and stuff all on my own. And that was one of the biggest difficulties because I couldn’t do everything on my own, but I tried my best to do everything on my own. A lot of delegations going on and a lot of planning, all on my part, and I am working with a really small team, so this was one of the biggest difficulties.

How would you describe your music style? A lot of people said my music to be very much like folk pop kind of music. But I just believe

What is your song-writing process like? Do you have a routine? I wouldn’t say that as a routine. I try to keep myself at home to think and write, whenever I feel like it. It isn’t like a fixed routine. My style and preferences change a lot and it also depends on the type of music I am listening to. What are your hopes for the future? I just hope to be able to play in more countries and play to more people that would want to listen to my music. Being able to come up to Kuala Lumpur, performing overseas for the first time, it’s quite crazy already. Not to mention all the people who willingly come down to wait for us to play. And that’s all I ever wanted. What is your message and advice to our readers and fans? Thanks for listening to all my music. Please check it out. Thank you, Campus Plus! The Young&

The Bold Get Personal: Amrita

By age 19, most of us are still trying to grow out of our affinity for bedazzled sneakers, conquer the dreaded last year of high school, and carve an image for ourselves. But at the same age, Amrita Soon has released a debut EP, played on renowned international platforms and regularly grace our local festivals. The Malaysian singer-songwriter sidles up next to her listeners, pouring anthems of hope, laments of love and a considerable amount of beauty in life. At the tender age of 14, Amrita was certain that her pursuit of music will be the first task to be checked off her bucket list. Unlike most of us who just can’t wait to hop into college life, Amrita, on the other hand, set her mind on music and travelling before locking down on her education path. An observer at heart, Amrita is perpetually intrigued and fascinated by the elements of life and love in which she would regularly incorporate into her songs. “When I feel something intensely and I can’t stop pondering about it, I know that’s another calling for me to pen down some lyrics and compose a track,” giggled Amrita. Drawing influences from Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, Simon and Garfunkel to Yuna, she is especially captivated by lyrics that tap into the exhilarating subject of life. Looking back, Amrita admits that it hasn’t always been a smooth sailing journey. Like many budding musicians, she too had trouble figuring out the kind of musician she wishes to be. Despite the myriad musical directions that she could potentially venture into, she settled for a simple philosophy. “I’ll just stick to being myself, continue to write songs from the bottom of my heart and hopefully, people will grow to like my music”, she thoughtfully said. 40

C+: Describe your musical style. A: An interesting blend of pop and country music. C+: Describe your music in three or four words. A : Lyrics-driven journal entries. C+: What advice do you have for people who want to take their passion in music one step further? A: When you’ve decided that you want to do something with your life and you’re certain about it, hunt for every possible way to make yourself better and to make it happen! There’s bound to be advice against it and while it is important to take in their input, never, ever allow that to change who

Music Conversation

A self-taught musician (well, mainly YouTubetaught), Amrita had also previously benefited from a couple of vocal lessons. She reveals that she picks up the skills from listening to songs repetitively and subsequently duplicating them into a notebook. “It’s a little secret I discovered that taught me a lot about song structure and lyrics composition,” explained Amrita. Of course, attending programmes such as Song Camp and workshops also tremendously expanded her songwriting journey. She often starts her creative process by coming up with a song’s melody and lyrics simultaneously. Strumming her guitar, she would then run through a few chords and allow the chips to fall where they may. While most of her songs are completed within two hours, others may actually stretch up to months. “There’s just so much that I wish to express in my songs but the challenge always lies in the limitation of words,” added Amrita. Impressively, Amrita also took her passion to a whole new level. At the age of 18, she successfully launched her very own EP titled “Clues”. Despite being a nerve-wrecking experience, she concedes that the overall process was fun and pleasurable. “It’s one thing to write my own songs and a whole new dimension to actually witness them grow from just a guitar and vocal track to a full-fledged studio album,” said Amrita with a grin.

Live Gigs

The room’s atmosphere was immediately buzzed up the moment Amrita shared with us her courageous trip to Nashville in order to attend the annual Country Music festival (CMA Fest)! Overwhelmed with excitement, she described the trip as being a dream-cometrue and now yearns to be there again. In order to raise the funds for her plane ticket, she relentlessly performed and busked along the streets of KL. She also single-handedly funded her own trip through a crowd funding website,

gofundme. The funding that she ultimately received exceeded her expectations. Until today, she is utterly grateful for the generosity and support by random strangers who genuinely helped in getting her there. By June 2014, she had enough funds to fly there for the summer. Accompanied by her mother, the duo stayed at a hostel for a good two months where they volunteered to help out while Amrita attended as many gigs as she could along with some workshops on the side. Indeed, being at the heart of a city where almost everyone is a songwriter (or at least aspired to be) can be a mind-boggling experience, and more so when she was featured at several songwriter’s nights.

Music Platform

In case you’re wondering where you could catch this little gem, expect to spot her around our local open mic arenas such as The Bee, Merdekarya and Publika. And for those who wish to track down her heart-warming tunes, head over to Amrita’s official page at amritasoon.com or follow her on Facebook at facebook.com/AmritaSoon for more upcoming shows. To support her debut EP, you can grab her album at Zest Café (Bangsar South), Bookalicious (Summit USJ), Merdekarya, Babagajah or download it digitally via iTunes and Spotify.

Down the Road with Music

As an effort to provide local aspiring musicians with a platform to shine, Amrita also organises the Treehouse Open Mic at Zest Café in Bangsar South. “Every session, I strive to feature more budding songwriters as a way to promote and encourage songwriting among Malaysian musicians,” explains Amrita. Ultimately, she aspires to tour around different countries with her music with the hope her stories will serve as medication against loneliness. Beyond her endless pursuit of making music, Amrita also wishes to lend a hand to others who share the same passion in music.

you are. C+ :Which song is the most fun to perform live? A: When I was in Nashville, I truly enjoyed playing my self-composed song called ‘Imaginary Breakup’. Generally, I don’t really have a good sense of humour, but I actually wrote the track as a joke. And thus far, people in Nashville are the only ones who laughed at it. Here in Malaysia, I like playing “Clues” or “Dandelion Days”. C+: Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for supporting you this far? A: I wouldn’t have been able to come this far without my family for being so supportive towards my dreams, Abraham Tee and David Malloy who produced ‘Clues’, and everyone who worked on it. I’m also very grateful to everyone in the music industry for being so welcoming, and also the lovely souls out there who enjoy my music.

REVIEWS Simple Mind Lim Kim

Not only is Lim Kim a member of the band Togewori, but she’s also a solo singer with Mystic89. If her name doesn’t ring any bells, then maybe the song ‘All Right’ will. After her last release in 2013, she is now back with Simple Mind, with a total of seven tracks. ‘Love Game’ is a song that immediately makes our day with its cheerful clapping, horns and funky keyboard melody. Her voice outshines the instruments, creating a great effect that’ll have you singing along. ‘Wind’ captured our attention too as it’s a very cute song that showcases Beenzino and Lim Kim’s strengths well. As the album’s name suggests, it’s a very simple yet adorable song that’s best listened to when you’re alone. ‘Upgrader’ is probably our favourite song on the whole album. It’s the most straightforward 80s’ western pop with a wonderful chorus and echo effects. If you’re looking for folksy tracks with soothing ballads, listen to ‘Say It First’ and ‘Paper Bird’. We love the emotions that she portrays in these songs. Overall, this is an enjoyable album that’s filled with Lim Kim’s uniqueness. It may not be too different from mainstream pop, but it’s something new from her.

The Beat Goes On Donghae & Eunhyuk

As the fifth official subgroup of the South Korean boy band Super Junior, Donghae & Eunhyuk has finally released their first Korean extended play, The Beat Goes On. Their first official performance kicked off back in December 2011 and finally we have this seven-track album. We’re glad to say that this long-awaited release was worth the wait. Written and composed by Donghae, we immediately fell in love with ‘Growing Pains’. We loved the classy guitar riff accompanied with light electronic music as background. The boys’ soft and emotional voices also blend into the song very well. Although the music doesn’t suit the track’s name, ‘Breaking Up’ is actually a silky smooth, danceable and joyful song that makes you want to listen more of it. If you’re up for another incredibly smooth and warm ballad, listen to ‘Mother’. We loved the heartfelt lyrics that Donghae dedicated to his dearest mom. Overall, this is a refreshing and relaxing album from them. The boys’ voices harmonised well with each other and they are also able to pack different genres into this album to show us what they got. We can’t wait for their future releases!

BoA

After releasing her solo debut, Top Secret last year, Hyosung is back with her first extended play, Fantasia. She is the second member of K-pop girl group Secret, after Song Jieun struck out on her own with her solo debut and other official individual activities. We liked Top Secret, so we were excited with what Fantasia will bring us. The album begins with ‘Come To See Me’, a sweet song combining Hyosung’s soft and breathy vocals with a catchy beat that creates a groovy atmosphere. But if you wish to listen to her sweet voice in an amazing and earnest ballad, then you should listen to ‘How Can I’. This is where her voice shines, accompanied with a simple acoustic guitar. The song makes our heart break and reminds us of all those broken promises, sad memories and the loss we’ve experienced. Hyosung has once again attracted us with her sweet, honeyed and silky voice. We love the instruments that are used on the album because the effects it gives is nice and enjoyable. This is an album that is worth getting and keeping. Looking forward to her next album!

It’s been three years since BoA last released her Koreanlanguage studio album, Only One. We believe that we are as excited as you are when Kiss My Lips, her eighth Korean-language studio album was released. But what excites us even more is that this album also marks the 15th anniversary celebration of her debut. Thanks for entertaining us and giving us all this awesome music of yours for the past 15 years! ‘Who Are You’ quickly captivated our hearts due to its sweet piano, funk and disco-inspired beats together with BoA’s lovely voice and Gaeko’s rapping. Inspired from electronic music and 80s’ pop, ‘Shattered’ is a tremendously attractive and unique song. We love BoA’s sweet voice and the echo effects it gives. We fell in love with it as soon as we heard it. Whenever you’re feeling down, listen to ‘Fox’ and you’ll be happy and energetic instantly. We really like the lively feeling that BoA’s voice generates in this song. This is a great comeback album from BoA as most of the songs are perfectly done. We had a lovely afternoon listening to the entire album. Go grab this album as soon as possible!

| CAMPUS PLUS

We’re almost certain that McDonald’s soft serve is the first thing that comes to your mind when you read the header. As its name suggests, it is softer than regular ice cream because it is frozen at a higher temperature to preserve the mixture so that it remains oh, so smooth, milky and soft.

Ice Cream Potong

Don’t you feel nostalgic when you think about the ice cream potong that you always had when you were young? You may not know this, but it is actually made of coconut milk, skimmed milk, corn starch and sugar as basic ingredients, together with flavours like red bean, yam, durian and countless more. In addition, ice cream potong is cut from a big block of ice cream cube and served on a wooden stick. Simple and sweet.

Variety is the (Sp)ice of Life

Japan is the champion! Gelato

As you may well be aware, gelato is the Italian word for ice cream that comprises milk, cream, sugar and sometimes, egg yolks. We wouldn’t be surprised if you love gelato more than any other types of ice cream as it has a more intense flavour that can easily melt your heart. Furthermore, gelato is relatively lower in calories, fat and sugar than ice cream.

No one beats Japan for the amount of unique ice creams that they have. Ranging from sea creature ice cream to vegetable ice cream and even noodles ice cream, they have everything. As ridiculous as the ice cream may sound, wouldn’t it be cool to try them all? If you’re in Japan, we would recommend that you try and savour the following chilly ice cream creations.

a.) Sea creature ice cream – Fish ice cream, octopus ice cream, squid ice cream, crab ice cream, shrimp ice cream, eel ice cream, whale ice cream, oyster ice cream, abalone ice cream. b.) Vegetable ice cream – Fried eggplant ice cream, cactus ice cream, spinach ice cream, garlic ice cream, lettuce and potato ice cream, grated yam ice cream. c.) Noodles ice cream – Nagoya noodle ice cream, shark fin noodle ice cream, miso ramen ice cream. d.) Alcoholic’s ice cream – Stout ice cream, potato liquor ice cream. e.) Does Porn Own You?

july 2015

Porn. The word alone elicits so many responses, such as shock, arousal and for the most part, shame. If the subject alone is still being veiled by a thick layer of stigma, imagine the same situation for the topic of porn addiction, but tripled. How does one even begin to define, much less examine and treat this ailment? Here’s our no-holds-barred take on it.

P

icture this: you’re lazing on your bed, reluctant to get up, when suddenly your phone vibrates with the arrival of a Whatsapp text. It’s your friend, and he wants to invite you for a hangout at the mamak. You haven’t seen the gang in a while, so you reply: “Ok, meet u there in 10.” Once you arrive at the mamak, you happily join your friends. It’s been some time, but any initial awkwardness you worried about soon fades and gives way to a familiar sense of rapport. You can’t wait to dig into your food and catch up on all that the boys have been up to. But just as soon as you are settling in, a strange feeling creeps in. You start feeling a kind of itch, a mental kind. One that’s calling you on to make a half-baked excuse to leave your friends, drive home, turn on the computer and log into Pornhub. You try to shake it off but you’re only strengthening the urge. You wonder if you can make it until the end of the hangout, whenever that could be. But soon enough you find yourself losing focus on the conversation at hand, because one way or another your mind starts drifting off to the possibility that you could be at home masturbating to endless hours of porn right now. In fact, it actually feels more ideal than hanging out with your friends right now. Minutes pass and you decide that you’ve got to go. You make up some hasty, half baked excuse and bolt out the restaurant. Next thing you know, you’re driving home and excited at the prospect of finally beginning your ‘perfect afternoon’, yet oddly guilty at the same time for letting your desire get the better of you and an otherwise great yumcha session. You soothe that guilt by telling yourself: it won’t happen again. Ultimately, you just can’t wait to get your next high. If that sounds like you in any way, you might just be addicted to porn. Spend a few minutes to take the short quiz below, just to be sure.

How Do Your Peers View Porn?

As James*, a fresh college graduate puts it, he is perpetually consumed by a high sexual drive to the extent that he needs to satisfy it by watching porn every night. He admits that it is compulsory for him to browse porn websites at least once during the night. “While I can’t alter the fact that I do watch porn every night, it is imperative to note that I rarely act upon it. In fact, I only masturbate around

two to three times a week, which I believe is a healthy number,” he says. “The danger occurs during the individual’s quest to feel the same thrill again because that is when things can spiral out of control. The next thing you know, the person is stalking an unsuspecting person who is in the process of disrobing. Obviously, things will not look pretty from there.” For Charlene*, she readily admits to watching porn, but only among her closest circle of friends. Being a feminist, she does not enjoy watching porn that glorify men and reduce women to mere tools of satisfaction, but rather women-friendly videos where sexual intercourse is depicted in a more romantic, sensual manner. “I watch these videos about once a week, and only for an hour at most. It’s a light, mindless form of entertainment for me,” she says. However, she worries that the prevalence of gratuitous nudity and sex scenes in mainstream movies and TV shows will cause a new generation of yet to be educated youths to have damaging misconceptions about sex. *Names have been changed for the sake of the interviewees’ privacy

Quiz: Are You Addicted To Porn? Watching the occasional ‘dirty movie’ doesn’t cause any real harm. However, if it interferes with your daily life and relationships, it becomes a problem. But how do you know for sure if you have developed an addiction? Thanks to Men’s Fitness, here’s a quiz to help you determine if your habit is just a harmless one, or in need of help.

*Never = 0 point, Occasionally = 1 point, Often = 2 points, Most of the time = 3 points a.) Do you spend more than 11 hours a week watching porn? (which is about one and half hour per day) Never Occasionally Often Most of the time b.) Have your porn viewing habits impacted your relationship with your partner negatively? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time c.) Do your porn viewing habits affect your work or relationships with friends/family? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time

The Mainstreaming of Porn

Bouncing off Charlene’s point about the increasing frequency of nudity and sex scenes in mainstream entertainment, we have to wonder if it ties into the rising statistics on

d.) Do you ever choose watching porn over hanging out with friends or family? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time e.) How frequently do you use porn to make yourself feel less depressed or bored? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time f.) Have you ever thought about stopping your viewing of porn? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time g.) Have your porn viewing habits hindered you from achieving sexual satisfaction with your partner? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time h.) Have you ever fantasised about what you’ve seen to get in the mood for sex? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time i.) Do you feel the need to spend more time watching porn or to watch increasingly hardcore porn? Never Occasionally Often Most of the time Add up all your points and move on to the results. Score: Under 8 – Perhaps you’re not a porn addict, but if you have a family history of addiction, then the risk of you being a porn addict is still there. Practise caution. 9-15 – Attention: your porn habit is bordering on being “problematic” and it’s time to get it fixed before it gives you more problems. If you are having some issues, it’s always better to face them head on. 16-20 – You are slightly addicted to porn and have been struggling with it for a while. You have realised that porn is negatively impacting your life and it’s really time for you to do something about it before it ruins your life. 20 and above – Like others who have severe addiction, you probably don’t even enjoy watching porn anymore, but you just can’t help but watch it. The strong desire to watch porn has most likely affected your life in major ways. You will realise that you’re not achieving your goals and enjoying real life sex.

porn addiction. Not only are cable channels like HBO making it easier to watch two people (or more!) have sex right in your living room, websites are also offering a wider variety of porn clips that you can view for free. Furthermore, with massively popular shows like ‘Game of Thrones’ and movies like ‘50 Shades of Grey’ - both of which have a major emphasis on sex - dominating the public sphere, the lines between porn and mainstream movies have been effectively blurred. What used to be a hush-hush matter is now not only acceptable (at least in some Western countries and a smattering of Asian

countries), but even glorified. A number of porn stars like Sasha Grey have made the transition from porn star to movie star, and increased reporting by mainstream media on the porn industry has also created greater awareness and understanding of it. While it’s great that there is more empathy for those in the sex industry and lessened stigma surrounding the topic of sex, the amplified exposure to raucous, unusual or publicised intercourse is a double-edged sword. It may cause one to be blind to the symptoms of porn addiction, and dismiss a voracious desire as the equivalent of a liberal attitude to sex.

Porn - The Pros and Cons

The Sunny Side of Pornography Self-Medicating with Fantasy

According to a paper published by Northwestern University’s Law Professor Anthony D’Amato, within the United States, the states with the least access to Internet pornography experienced a 53 percent increase in rape incidence, while the states with the most access experienced a 27 percent drop in the number of reported rapes between years 1980 and 2000. Although they do not prove that pornography is the root of the detected crime reductions, some experts and studies believe that the consumption of pornography may reduce the occurrence of rapes.

Open-mindedness In the Australian Journal of Communication, Alan McKee indicated that the consumers of pornography are comfortable in talking about sex. Furthermore, the consumers responded that pornography is a great way to understand and maintain one’s interest in sex and their partner’s pleasure in sex within a long term relationship.

The Dark Side of Pornography The “Hook-Up” Culture Centre for Marriage and Religion Research, Family Research Director and Ph.D. Senior Fellow Patrick F. Fagan and Brown University’s Health Promotion site both agreed that the consumption of pornography can increase the possibility of one’s desire for sexual exploration (read: experimentation). This could then cause the rise of the so-called “hook-up” culture, which potentially leads to infidelity, transmission of STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

Unrealistic Expectations The consumption of pornography may change and affect one’s expectations toward bodies and sex. Without proper education, it can increase one’s tolerance toward violent, abnormal or cruel sexual practices. Moreover, one could hold their partners’ looks to lofty, unrealistic expectations as depicted in glamourised porn videos.

The Culprit of Crime A number of studies held that the consumption of pornography may increase one’s likelihood of committing a sex-based crime. However, according to Latter-day Families’ Director Paul

James Birch, there is no scientific research that can prove this is valid.

Porn - Under The Psychological Microscope

Many people view porn addiction in terms of black and white. You either have it or you don’t. Such a rigid approach to porn viewing, however, is not very practical. In fact, it forces people to react by denying any form of porn addiction… until they are presented with undeniable facts (e.g. getting into legal trouble or getting caught by their spouses/ partners). As suggested by Dr. Kevin B. Skinner (a pioneer psychologist in porn addiction), there are seven stages of porn addiction: Stage 1: Mild exposure – once or twice a year, with little to no effects on daily life. Stage 2: You would occasionally look at porn with increased interest. However, pornography

into the belief that they are, it changes the argument and shifts the blame to them. Sex and porn are not the problems. You are. However, this doesn’t mean that you are a person of bad character. To be human is to be flawed, and when we see our flaws, we have the chance to learn from them. If you find yourself in this situation, you have to first let go of the embarrassment and fear, and understand that you can get better if you really want to. Ultimately, the responsibility is on you to identify why and how you make bad decisions, and take precautionary steps to make better decisions in the future.

Talk to someone. Pick up the phone and call a hotline. When you blame the problems on porn, you’re indirectly telling yourself “porn is more powerful than I am”. You may be the problem. But you know what? You are also the solution.

use at this stage does not indicate addiction. Stage 3: Even though you occasionally look at porn, you usually try to avoid it. But, every now and then, the urge gets so strong that it becomes uncontrollable and you give in. There are signs of addiction at this point. Stage 4: You notice increased sexual fantasies and attempt to control them, which results in stronger withdrawal symptoms. Stage 5: Porn is now impacting your day-today living as you spend a significant portion of the day thinking about it. Stage 6: Escalation begins as porn dominates most of your day-to-day life, affecting work, school, and personal relationships. Stage 7: At this point, you may make a dangerous jump and start acting out sexually, moving from the paper and plastic images of porn to the real world. You will start to take risks and act out physically for sexual thrills.

Eliminate Shame, Regain Control

Let’s get this straight: porn on its own is not addictive. Neither is sex. When people buy

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Porn! 1) Since the recent release of the film adaption of 50 Shades of Grey, BDSM related searches have also seen a significant increase. The 13th of February, which is also the movie’s official release date marks a threshold with searches for words like “submission”, “BDSM” and “dominate” topping the chart. Interestingly but not surprisingly, women also appear to be more curious about BDSM terms, searching upwards of 200% with action words like “spanking” and “bondage” skyrocketing by 150-220%. 2) According to Pornhub, the top three mostsearched keywords on porn sites are “teen”, “lesbian” followed by “MILF”, which pretty much covers every end of the spectrum, doesn’t it? 3) Approximately 12% of the websites on the Internet are porn. That’s estimated at nearly 25 million sites. 4) There are approximately 68 million pornographic search engine requests per day.

5) 42.7% of Internet users view pornographic content. 6) Average age of first Internet exposure to pornography is 11 years old. 7) Nine out of ten children aged between eight and 16 have viewed pornography on the Internet. In most cases, the sex sites were accessed unintentionally when a child is in the process of doing homework. 8) 64% of college men and 18% of college women spend time online for Internet sex every week. 9) 67% of young men and 49% of young women say viewing porn is an acceptable way to express one’s sexuality. 10) The pornography industry is larger than the revenues of the top technology companies combined: Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo!, Apple, Netflix and… (you get the point).

What’s eSports?

T

he early days when several gamers would gather in darkened rooms to prove their gaming competence in tourneys seem like a distant past. Electronic Sports (eSports) is garnering huge attention worldwide now. With multi-million dollar prize pools and legions of passionate fans supporting their favourite teams or players as they fight on an exciting virtual battlefield, eSports is swiftly growing in the sports industry. How did this happen? To find out, we interviewed eSports Malaysia’s (eSM) President Dato’ Latt Shariman Abdullah and Garena League of Legends Singapore & Malaysia’s Assistant Manager GM Bibi.

eSports, which is also known as electronic sports and competitive gaming is a term for structured multiplayer video game tournaments. It is no different from traditional sports as both require great skill or physical competence. But in terms of the form of the competition, eSports is different as it needs to be plugged into and played on electronic devices. Unfortunately, many today still do not consider eSports players as “athletes” based solely on their gaming skills nor consider eSports as an actual sport due to its lack of physical movements. However, the most important thing that makes a sport, well, a sport is the shared goal that every participant has; which is to win and to bring honour to their loved ones. Besides, a flexible mind is essentially required in any sports, more so in eSports because it allows one to make quick decisions, and that could be the critical component in winning any competition.

What are some of the top eSports titles that have contributed to the development of eSports?

What’s for sure is that all games have contributed to eSports’ development, but it seems that League of Legends (LoL) has been recognised as the top eSports title contributor. eSports scholarships are now being offered at several international institutions, providing the opportunity for young people to learn more about their favourite games and to have better understanding of the gaming industry. Moreover, a number of foreign countries have also granted professional gamers working visas to play legitimately in their country. LoL was the first game title to offer all of the above opportunities.

How do live streaming services, like Twitch help promote eSports? It has never been easier for a large number of gamers to broadcast their game online simultaneously. And this is the kind of service that Twitch has been providing, enabling us

For starters, the ability to break into professional gaming requires strong character, determination and passion. A professional gamer always has a strong mind set when he/ she is in the battle scene. The top players also have a disciplined practice schedule against their competitors and it’s the only way to truly advance their skills.”

to watch our favourite players goof around, practise and play in live competitions. What makes it great is it’s very easily accessible as long as you have an electronic device and Internet with you. Unsurprisingly, according to Twitch, the games that have most viewership are dominated by the eSports heavy titles, which are Dota 2, LoL, World of Warcraft (WoW)

and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). Services like Twitch play a vital role in inspiring a lot of players to get involved in eSports and to gather more sponsors to support the game. Therefore, live streaming services are extremely helpful in developing the eSports world.

What about eSports in Malaysia?

Although it may not be on par and as established as other countries, eSports is constantly evolving and growing in Malaysia. According to a report by Niko Partners, we

GM BIBI

We want to use eSports to disseminate positive values to the society. For Malaysian gamers, we want to introduce ‘hashtag (#) magrok’, which stands for Malaysian Gamers Are Okay to educate Malaysian gamers to win or lose like a gentleman by entering ‘magrok’ right before the game ends. ‘Magrok’ represents Malaysia gamers, therefore they have to live up their name and behave.” Dato’ Latt Shariman Abdullah

have about 9 million PC gamers in Malaysia, which is approximately 35% of our population. In addition, Malaysia has recently launched and recognises eSports Malaysia (eSM) as the legitimate governing body to nurture and to develop the gaming scene in Malaysia. In order to make Malaysia’s eSports a success, eSM is also planning to organise a huge national league next year.

Is it advisable for students to be involved in eSports?

Definitely, but only if students are able to identify what their priorities are. They shouldn’t expect this as their main source of income because it takes a lot of effort to be a successful and professional gamer. Playing games may be fun and some of you might think that it is

Most popular eSports titles in Malaysia currently • League of Legends • Dota 2 • FIFA Online 3 • Blackshot • Counter Strike: Global Offensive easy, but it actually requires a broad range of skill set, which is mental agility, analytical skills and sharp observation. However, with the opportunities nowadays, if they are confident and determined enough and this is what they really want to be, they should be able to pursue their dreams. They’ll get there someday.

What’s the future of eSports?

In about 10 years, eSports will be included in the Olympics and evolve into a leadingedge technological world. As technology becomes more integrated into society, eSports will continue to grow, develop and innovate rapidly. It will also be taken more seriously from a financial, cultural, social and technological standpoint.

eat fat to burn more fat

JULY 2015

wellness by ivy chin

F

Burn Those ats with These Fats

F

or years, dietary fat has been demonised. We have been told the lie that the best way to control calories, shed fat and make our belly flat is to cut fat from our diet. Since fat comprises more calories than protein or carbohydrates, it’s only natural that we believe the adage: “Avoid fat at all cost, if you want to lose weight.” And here is where the low-fat diet craze stepped in; making us afraid of fat. Due to this misconception, we have traded in all those full-fat dairy, butter, meat and other so-called fatty food for low-fat versions of them. But the truth is fat doesn’t make us fat. And yes, you read that right. In fact, fat is actually an important friend of ours that makes us healthier and leaner. According to Miriam Hospital’s Women’s Cardiac Center Director Barbara Roberts, M.D., our body needs fat to function and it helps us to absorb vitamins A, D and E, which are vital to our nervous system. However, here is the trick. You have to pick good-for-you fats and limit the bad ones.

What are the good fats?

What do healthy fats do?

Monounsaturated Fats

Slow Down Digestion

Known as MUFAs, they raise good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and lower bad lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and protect against plaque from developing in your arteries. Moreover, they can also prevent the waistline from getting bigger. If you aren’t too sure what contains MUFAs, here are some examples for you. You’ll be able to consume MUFAs from olive oil, olives, canola oil, almonds, cashews, peanuts, peanut butter, sesame seeds and avocados.

Fat can’t be released when insulin levels are high. And this will happen when we eat carbohydrates as they will break down into glucose and be sent into our bloodstream, causing high levels of insulin, eventually preventing the release of fatty acids. Therefore, fats are needed to slow down the digestion of our meal to make the glucose release steadily. By doing this, it can maintain our body’s insulin level and fat can be mobilised.

Burn Fat As you may not be aware, fat is actually a valuable fuel source that our body needs to burn fat and to use it for energy, rather than store it. By increasing the intake of fat and lowering carbohydrates, your body will be more willing to let go of the fat that is currently stored within your body. Throw away your old belief and remember that eating fat will enhance your body’s ability to burn fat.

Polyunsaturated Fats In order to lower our LDL cholesterol level, these fats contain essential omega-3 fatty acids that help to boost brain function, fortify the immune system and improve mood. Moreover, it also contains omega-6 fatty acids that keep our skin and eyes healthy. Fish, canola oil, walnuts and tofu are good sources of omega-3; for omega-6, you can get it from corn, corn-fed chicken and beef and farmed fish. However, bear in mind that we should consume more omega-3s instead of omega-6s as too much of it can lead to inflammation, which links to heart disease.

Makes You Want to Eat Less Admit it, your low-fat diet always leaves you hungry all the time and probably makes you eat more than you’re supposed to. But fear not, by consuming a fair amount of fats, it leaves you feeling full and satisfied. Ultimately, you will not feel hungry and can sustain to your next meal without the need to grab some in-between meals snacks to cure your hunger. Now that you know about this big fat truth, you should avoid getting yourself into this big fat mistake. It’s true, fat is healthy and it’s good for you, but you have to beware of the types of fat that you eat together with the intake amount. Have them in moderation. Don’t be one of those people who take everything to the extreme! If you have a hard time remembering what types of fat are good for you, just remember the word ‘MONOPOLY’. Allow us to remind you again, fat and calories are two different things. Thus, here’s a piece of advice: Don’t be afraid of consuming too much fat, but be afraid of consuming too many calories. A Portable Cube of Music JULY 2015

Philips BT1300 PIX3L

One’s curiosity is immediately piqued when laying eyes on the new Philips BT1300 PIX3L. Encased within a colourful silicon case and small enough to fit in your palm, the wireless portable speaker claims to give music lovers the long yearned for golden combination of portability and superior audio quality. Does it deliver on its promise? Let’s find out. Design The name PIX3L is a stylish and accurate one for this vibrant speaker cube. It does not have a grille for protection, but rather a curved paper clip shaped metal ring to act as a barrier between the speaker and external forces. A button with a phone and bluetooth icon is embedded on top of the side of the speaker. In the event that your phone is charging and you want to sit elsewhere in your home, you can use this feature to answer calls easily. On the back of the speakers lie three basic outlets, which allow you to charge it, insert an audio jack and enable bluetooth pairing with your mobile device. With a design this sleek, it would be great even as just an accessory.

Features By turning on your mobile device’s and the PIX3L’s Bluetooth, you can immediately transform your PIX3L into a formidable cube of sound. Once you connect your device to the PIX3L, you will 56

hear two beeps, and start playing your favourite songs right away. Like many new offerings from Philips, the speaker is wired with an anti-clipping function to prevent distortion when playing music at a high volume. Additionally, it has a built-in microphone for hands-free phone calls, meaning you can answer calls even when your phone is in the other room, or when your hands are occupied. On a full charge, the PIX3L can stay alive for up to eight hours of playtime.

Audio Quality Small size, big sound - that’s how we’d describe the music playing experience with a PIX3L. As there are no volume controls on the PIX3L, the volume is determined by the slider on your mobile device, and for us, we only had to slide it across the halfway point to hear the music at a volume that envelopes the whole room. Although the beauty of the anticlipping function doesn’t come across as well here, songs are still crisp with decent fidelity

at sensible volumes. As long as you don’t have to play it at maximum volume, the PIX3L will get the job done. The in-built microphone also delivers clear phone calls, so you don’t need to shout to get the message across.

Conclusion At a relatively low price of RM149, the Philips BT1300 PIX3L is a purchase worthy of your hard earned dough. Due to its lightweight build, attractive matte design and decent audio performance at normal levels, it would be a great fit for almost anyone’s lifestyle. As long as you love music, more so music on the go, the PIX3L is the speaker cube for you.

Motorola Focus66

wiredup by bryan chan

In Focus Motorola Focus66 There are plenty of surveillance solutions out there in the market in this day and age. As common sense would dictate, the more advanced systems are priced higher, while the simpler ones are not really worth a look. Thankfully, the Motorola Focus66 is here to change things. Design Straight up, there’s not really much to talk about in terms of the Focus66’s design. It’s simply a camera that has a lens assembly, a two-way speaker system, and of course, a stand. The stand can be mounted on a wall and thanks to a ball head-like socket, you’ll have a good amount of freedom in determining the angle of view. Dimensions wise, the Focus66 is about the size of a computer mouse, which is pretty standard as far as modern IP cameras go.

Features This is where the Focus66 shines. For starters, the Focus66 has night vision, which makes it much easier to record videos and/or take photos in low-light environments. Apart from that, it has a two-way speaker system that lets you receive audio from the Focus66, as well as broadcast your voice through it. There’s also the option to play a number of lullabies, making this a great baby monitor as well. Perhaps the most important feature of the Focus66 however,

is the fact that it has Wi-Fi connectivity. With this feature, you’re able to view live feeds from the Focus66, as long as you’re connected to the same Wi-Fi as it is. What’s also interesting is that the Focus66 can deliver these live feeds to a number of devices – Android devices, iOS devices and even PCs. All you need to do is download the app on either the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and you’re all set to pair your devices with the Focus66. You’ll need to pair them via a mobile device, before you can access the camera via a PC, which is done by logging in to hubbleconnected.com. Last but not least, the integrated temperature sensor is worth a mention. Thanks to this, the Focus66 can provide real-time temperature readings and alert you if things get too cold, or too warm.

Image Quality The Focus66 records in 720p, which lets it record a good amount of detail in a living

Honor 6 Plus

If you’re the type of person who loves big screens, then you’d be happy to learn that the Honor 6 Plus was launched in Malaysia a couple of months ago. If you didn’t know yet, the Honor is a sub-brand from Huawei that sells products in the European market. Design The Honor 6 Plus is named as such because of its 5.5-inch screen. It offers Full HD resolution with a pixel density of 400 pixels per inch. If those figures sound familiar, it’s because that’s the same specifications as the iPhone 6 Plus. What’s unique about the Honor 6 Plus’ design is its outer shell. It looks great because there are six different layers on this phone’s shell, giving a sort of “3D pattern”, similar to the Huawei Ascend P7. Here’s the best part – the layers contribute to making the phone somewhat bulletproof. This is thanks to the inclusion of a fibreglass layer. We haven’t verified this claim, and we hope there would never come a time where you’d need to test this. Overall, the phone is sleek and feels very much like the high-end Huawei Ascend P8.

octa-core processor. With this processor on board, the phone performs extremely smoothly. There’s no noticeable lag when switching between multiple apps, and even in more demanding tasks, such as gaming, the phone had no trouble keeping up. As for its camera system, the Honor 6 Plus sports a dual-lens system. Thanks to this, the phone is able to capture night shots beautifully. Speaking of the camera system, the lens aperture goes as wide as f0.95 and as narrow as f16. What this means is that it’s capable of shooting in a variety of lighting scenarios. What’s impressive is that at f0.95, you’ll get photos with a shallow depth of field, akin to how a DSLR has “bokeh”. We’re happy to report that we’re very happy with the performance of this phone’s camera system.

JULY 2015

Razer Nabu X Smartband

A companion device is a great way to expand the functionality of your smartphone. Take a smartwatch for example, it allows one to quickly read messages and even accept calls, without even taking out your phone. This month, we take a look at the Razer Nabu X, a fitness tracker companion device. Design There’s not really a lot to talk about in terms of design for the Nabu X. It’s basically a band that you wear on your wrist, and it’ll track the amount of steps you’ve taken, the distance you’ve travelled, and plenty of other things. It comes in either black, green or white, and features three LEDs that function as notifications when you receive a message or a call. The band itself is made of silicone, and can definitely fit any hand size, thanks to the many adjustment slots available. Also worth mentioning is the fact that the sensor module can be removed to allow for easier washing of the band.

Features As mentioned above, the Nabu X has three LEDs that are customisable, so you’ll know exactly what sort of notification is being displayed immediately. Apart from that, it’ll also vibrate, giving you a secondary form of alert. What’s interesting about the Nabu X is that it has an open development platform. This

means that third party developers are able to develop apps for the Nabu X. To this effect, Razer is expecting the development of multiplayer apps that make use of the data stored in the Nabu X. To make use of the Nabu X, you’ll first have to head on over to either the Apple App Store, or Google Play Store (yes, the Nabu X is compatible with both Apple and Android devices). This app is called the Nabu X Utility, whose function is to allow the pairing of the Nabu X to a phone. Once paired, you’ll be able to customise the LEDs, as well as view the data from the device.

Specifications •

Compatible with iOS and Android devices (iPhone 5 and above, Android 4.3 and above)

• Up to seven days of battery life • IP67 water resistant up to 1m • Detachable sensor module • Customisable LED colours

Conclusion Overall, the Nabu X is very light and does what it was meant to do well. Its LEDs quickly notify you of an incoming message or call, but you’ll still have to reach for your phone to view/accept the call. If you’re looking for a no-fuss fitness tracker, the Nabu X is definitely recommended. Retailing for just under RM200, it’s a pretty good deal.

I was born in Kuala Lumpur but would consider myself a Gombak native since I spent half of my life there. Growing up, I have always been engrossed in hip-hop culture and its artwork. Initially, I ventured into the graffiti scene in 2000. Here I am, fifteen years later and still loving it! C+: Where and where did you first painted in a public space? M: Well, I started sketching when I was 13 and realised I have an interest in art. There is this occasion that I still remember vividly. I was 17, and while everyone was busy gearing up for SPM, I was at a construction site stealing planks and boards! I would drag them home and practised my graffiti skills on them repeatedly. Right after SPM, I finished up whatever leftover sprays I had on zinc construction sites around Precinct 9 in Putrajaya. My first “official” pieces are actually tagged on every bus stop along Precinct 9 and that explains my pseudonym, Mile09. C+: How did you manage to grow an interest into a profession? M: In 2005, I had the opportunity to visit the crew of Phyberwrite or PWC (a pioneer in the Malaysian graffiti scene) along with some other notable graffiti artists like SWS (Sembur with Style) and PHB KLK (Phobia Klik) during their graffiti productions for Hari Raya in Shah Alam. From there, it really opened my eyes to the technicality of graffiti. It hit me that there is so much more to learn, from techniques of efficient spraying to other skills. A year later, I was finally offered my first graffiti project, which is for a bunny egg shop at Danga Bay. C+: What are the messages that you wish to convey in each of your art piece? M: It really varies according to the project and clients’ requests. I recently did a piece for

Petronas where the theme revolves around patriotism in conjunction with Malaysia’s Independence Day. C+: What are some of the specific challenges you have faced as a graffiti artist in Malaysia? M: In terms of graffiti style, lettering is still slowly gaining its place in Malaysia. Many would still prefer graffiti with characters rather than font and that could be a challenge. Most commercial projects also tend to opt for graffiti with stencils, stickers or cartoon and that’s where it can be slightly tough in terms of scoring projects. C+: What do you see as the future of street art? M: It is definitely growing and I am particularly optimistic about its future considering that more and more well-known companies are actually seeking us for graffiti projects. Even government sectors are slowly incorporating graffiti into their events. Just recently, I was involved with Hari Belia in Putrajaya where I was invited by the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) to perform a demonstration. C+: On a lighter note, what inspires you these days? M: My family has always been my main source of inspiration and they are one of the main reasons why I have decided to dedicate all my time into graffiti as a source of financial income. And of course, I am forever indebted to my fellow fans and collectors too for being a huge inspiration. Throughout the years, they have constantly pushed me to improve my artwork and to stay creative.

C+: Lastly, any advice you’d like to share with emerging graffiti artists in Malaysia? M: Keep in mind that the graffiti industry in Malaysia is actually a tight-knit community. Stay united and always, always respect each other. Trust me, the only way to succeed is through respect and unity.

LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR LP700-4 ROADSTER

JULY 2015

THIS AIN’T NO TRACTOR Did you know that Ferruccio Lamborghini, the founder of the eponymously named iconic supercar manufacturer, was building and selling tractors before his involvement in automobiles?

In fact, by the 1950s his tractor business got so good that he started spending his increasing wealth on a number of expensive high performance cars. One such car was the Ferrari 250GT. However, he was constantly annoyed and frustrated with the Ferrari’s engine and clutch problems. So he made a visit to Enzo Ferrari himself, whose factory was just nearby, to bring his misgivings about the car to Enzo’s attention. But Enzo simply dismissed him, saying that he had no time for a ‘tractor manufacturer’. After that, Lamborghini went on to successfully modify his Ferrari 250GT to outperform stock models, and eventually build his own wildly successful sports car manufacturing business in the years to come.

Fast forward to today, and Lamborghini’s cars are the stuff of legends and dreams. The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster is but the latest in its long line of extreme supercars. Based off the stealth-bomber inspired Aventador Coupe, the Roadster’s striking difference is the removable two-piece forged composite top, which can be stored in the front luggage compartment. A carbon-fibre chassis underpins the car, accompanied with a host of other space-age carbon and aluminium components throughout the car to keep its weight down. Because it’s an open top, the Aventador Roadster gains 50kg over the Coupe, due to additional structural bracing required. The additional weight penalty is more than offset by the monstrously potent V12 power unit. Displacement is at 6.5 litres, and this

beast of a motor effortlessly produces 691 hp and 509 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,500 rpm. All that power coupled with the car’s Haldex allwheel-drive system means this baby can do the 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 349 km/h. And helping to transfer all that horsepower to the ground are two different tyres and wheel sizes – the front wheels and tyres are 255/35/ R20 while the rear sports massive 335/30/R21 wheels. Six-piston carbon ceramic brakes front and rear provide the much needed stopping power for this big Lambo. Ferrari waved away Lamborghini’s concerns over 50 years ago; we’re pretty sure he would’ve regretted doing so if he was still alive today, seeing all the beauties that tractor guy has come up with. The Thai Getaway

Escape to Exotic

Koh Samui

Serene, lapping waves of turquoise, sprawling hills of green and smooth sandy beaches. These are just some of the natural splendours you will find in Koh Samui, one of Thailand’s largest islands in the Gulf of Thailand. One of the South East Asian country’s most prized beach havens, it also boasts of luxurious spas, glamorous resorts and a vibrant nightlife scene.

Thanks to the good folks at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Bangkok Airways, Campus Plus had the immense pleasure of experiencing all this for ourselves. So, read on to find out more on the places you should see, dine and explore in this island paradise.

Despite its proximity to the shopping area, Dara Samui still makes for a quiet and idyllic place to enjoy your getaway in. Coupled with the fully-facilitated rooms, outstanding scenery and ease of access to entertainment outlets, Dara Samui is easily the undisputed choice for tourists new to Koh Samui.

Where We Stayed:

Dara Samui Beach Resort & Spa Villa This picturesque resort has an overall rating of 4 stars on TripAdvisor, and it more than lived up to that when we visited it. Strategically located near the airport (only 1.6km!), you won’t have to face a long, tiring journey to your hotel when you disembark from the airport. As it is situated along Chaweng Beach, you also get an unbeatable view. Facilities-wise, Dara Samui has covered all the bases with a beautiful pool, a shuttle bus service, a restaurant by the beach, spa and massage services and WiFi-equipped rooms that also come with your own balcony. Outside of Dara Samui, you will find utter convenience in the form of a Family Mart and a pharmacy. As it is right smack in the middle of the shopping area in Chaweng, you won’t be hard pressed for souvenirs and local knick knacks either.

What We Did: Snorkelling in Koh Nang Yuan An hour’s trip away by speedboat, Koh Nang Yuan deserves a spot on any visitor’s check list due to its pristine, clear waters and colourful marine life. You may also opt for the Viewpoint Package (priced at around 2100 baht; approx. RM229), which comprises a hike up to the viewpoint of the three islands’ highest peak. Awaiting hikers at the top is a stunningly panoramic landscape view of the surrounding beaches. The best time to visit would be in the morning, as the beach is less crowded.

What We Ate: After all that underwater fun, we were famished. We made our way over to the Walking Street at the Fisherman Village to satisfy our hunger. By car, it’s only a 20-minute journey away. Over here, you will find many savoury dishes, from grilled chicken to squid to mango sticky rice. As delicious as they may be, they aren’t the highlight of Koh Samui’s food scene, though. Seafood is. While seafood in Malaysia is generally relatively pricey, it’s easy to get a good deal on fresh fish and lobsters here due to their abundance. To the people of Koh Samui, seafood is street food. You will find huge lobsters, oysters and any kind of edible sea creature you can dream of, conveniently sold along the streets. Also, don’t forget to taste Thailand’s take on banana pancakes, most popularly offered by the “Pancake Man”, whom you will find on the main street in Maenam Village. Art through Vandalism

july 2015

A Little History… Hip-hop graffiti owes its genesis to New York City during the late 1960s when a group of teenagers from the impoverished neighbourhoods began blanketing the city with their “tags” (stylised signatures of names they had invented for themselves). Back then, groups of writers were mainly concerned with visibility and recognition by “tagging up” their names, often in places where they could be seen by as many as possible. By the 1970s, merely getting up one’s name in large numbers was no longer sufficient for recognition. Writers began to seek out even more risky and conspicuous tagging spots to enhance their reputations. Soon, originality and colour are what the writers deemed as style, a primary source of status among writers. And that is how the whole concept of graffiti came about…

The Emergence of Graffiti in Kuala Lumpur Street art in Malaysia has also gained momentum over the last five years. The graffiti art scene in Malaysia was originally initiated around 1988 in Batu Pahat, Johor by a renowned graffiti crew known as

Street ART Utopia Graffiti writing is as ancient as human communication but in the United States, it gained widespread attention only with its proliferation in urban neighbourhoods in the late 1960s and 1970s. Unfortunately, most people have come to associate graffiti with vandalism, regarding its markings and murals as visible, invasive challenges to aesthetics and property concepts. Urban gangs have made graffiti their own during the last three decades. However, for the most part, graffiti is more accurately linked to hip-hop. According to anthropologist Susan Philips, hip-hop graffiti actually served as an alternative to gangs, with “writers” organising themselves in crews that spar with each other through style and production as opposed to violence.

“PhobiaKlik”. In to time, its popularity grew to attract other budding artists. Later, in Kuala Lumpur (KL), a crew called “SWS” (Sembur with Style) also lent a hand in popularising the art. Since then, KL has been transformed into a hub for graffiti art, with many artists from around the country settling down in the cityscape. Today, there are many established crews in the country like PhobiaKlik, SWS, Black Fryday, Super Sunday, Medium Touch, and Phiberwryte.

Graffiti: Out of the Shadows Today in Malaysia, graffiti has gone through a facelift and is no longer termed as vandals’ work of destruction but rather a celebration of urban art. One of the defining moments of our street art’s community include the collaboration with government authorities (KL City Hall, DBKL and the Ministry of Youth and Sports) to breathe in colours along the banks of the Klang River. On top of that, there were also several graffiti camps organised across various youth and sports complexes, further providing an arena for local graffiti artists to expose the younger generation to the art.

A Feast for the Eyes Malaysia may not immediately spring to mind when discussing hot street art locations, but wouldn’t you know, there are a handful of artistic mural highlights in many states. Join us as we take you on a street art tour throughout Malaysia.

Malacca Famous for its heritage, this historic city added street art to its credentials when a group of mural and graffiti artists were commissioned to repaint a row of historical shop houses along the river in the Melaka River Art Project (Projekarm) in 2012. Today, the scenic and revitalised area boasts of river cruises, a riverside promenade dotted with cafes, and a life-sized art gallery along the riverfront facades.

Kuala Lumpur In 2010, the KUL Sign Festival was one of the first street art projects to be commissioned. Its aim was to revive the grey and dull concrete walls along the Klang River. Today, the area is brimming with colourful urban images, from futuristic cityscapes, cartoon characters to everyday street scenes that are meticulously crafted in dazzling hues of colours.

Away from the waterside, street art has also blossomed in KL’s Central Market, particularly in an area close to the hectic Pasar Seni LRT station, and on Jalan Pudu Lama. Other notable works to view include Kenji Chai’s commissioned mural for Nando’s Chinatown Restaurant at Jalan Sultan, as well as various pockets of street art in KL suburbs like in Taman Prima Tropika, Seri Kembangan and Taman Seni located in Seksyen 2, Shah Alam.

Penang The famous Penang island’s UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town is deemed as the first city to bring street art out of the shadows when famous Lithuanian street artist Ernest Zacharevic’s quaint murals within the heritage enclave made its way around the world (partly thanks to the millions of selfies taken by amused tourists of his murals and posted to countless social media sites). Let’s also not forget our local artist, Louis Gan who contributed his fair share of breath taking pieces to the town.

Ipoh All thanks to Zacharevic, the once sleepy former tin-mining town has now made it into the street art tour. Swiftly after he decided to adorn Ipoh’s downtown shops houses with his iconic murals, he was joined by a local art teacher, Eric Lai who also initiated a street art project together with his art students along Hugh Low Street, Ipoh.

Johor Bahru Zacharevic also left his mark in Johor Bahru with a series of Lego-themed

street art in Taman Molek, Johor Bahru in homage to the opening of LEGOLAND Malaysia during 2013. Despite garnering more than 6,000 likes in a day for his “Lego thief” piece, the painting was removed by authorities due to its negative reflection on the city’s reputation. Now, now… who would have thought Malaysia is home to so many stunning masterpieces! Now that we have listed down these awesome street art spots, why just admire them from afar? It’s time to jump on an adventure (or two) and make that weekend getaway to enjoy the artworks for yourselves!

a counter for the ultimate burgers

by bryan chan

JULY 2015

Scrumptious,

s r e g r u B d e s i m o t Cus Build your burgers just the way you like ‘em, at The Counter

L

ocated at Level 7 in Pavilion KL, The Counter is a place where you’re likely to find the best burgers in town. What exactly warrants us to say this, is the fact that you’re able to build your very own burgers here. We had the opportunity to sample their mouth-watering offerings recently, so read on to find out more about this place. The Counter is actually a franchise that was started in 2003 in California. Its first outlet was located a stone’s throw away from where Oprah Winfrey was recording her show. Story has it that Winfrey’s personal assistant used to buy her burgers from there on a weekly basis, and she absolutely loved it. Winfrey talked about it on her show, and the rest, as they say, is history. So what’s this about building your own burger? Well, it’s just that! At The Counter, it’s a six-step process to achieving a foodgasm. We’d like to explain the process in detail, but that would take up the entire article, so we’ll just summarise it with the steps below:

1

Choose your burger. Options include beef, tuna, turkey, chicken and vegan veggie.

3

Choose your sauce. Satisfy your taste buds with 23 different sauces

5 70

Choose your bun. With 6 buns to choose from, you’re | CAMPUS PLUS spoilt for choice.

2 Burger Bacon BBQ

2 Choose your cheese.

There are 12 different types of cheeses to choose from!

4 Choose your toppings.

e Shake Birthday Cak

Go crazy with over 40 different toppings.

6

Choose your side. There are 10 different sides to complement your burger

Vegan veg gie

One- Poun der

Now that you’ve got an idea on what The Counter has to offer, let’s find out just how delicious the food there is. The first to arrive were our drinks. We were given the ‘Birthday Cake Shake’ (RM16) and the ‘Hollywood Hula Hoop Smoothie’ (RM16) to try. The ‘Birthday Cake Shake’ comes with vanilla ice cream, and is topped with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles. The ‘Hollywood Hula Hoop Smoothie’ on the other hand is a concoction of mango, banana, coconut and orange, as well as fat-free vanilla yogurt. In terms of taste, the ‘Birthday Cake Shake’ truly tastes like a birthday cake, while the ‘Hollywood Hula Hoop Smoothie’ reminds one of mango lassi. Both taste great in their own right, but if we had to choose, we’d go with any of The Counter’s smoothies. Next up, we were given the ‘50/50’ or ‘Half & Half Fries’. As its name suggests, it’s a plate of fries, with two different types of fries. There’s a variety of fries to choose from, but we were given their top-sellers – half a serving of Sweet Sriracha Fries, and another half of Parmesan Fries. The Sweet Sriracha Fries have just the right amount of spiciness and sweetness. If you love spicy tapioca chips, you’ll absolutely love this! As for the Parmesan Fries, it would definitely appeal to all you cheese-lovers. For the main event, we were given the Bacon2 BBQ Burger that’s priced at RM45, as well as a custom-built Vegan Veggie One-Pounder that’s priced at RM41. The Bacon2 BBQ Burger features

Caramel + Chocolate Brownie

a thick slab of beef patty, cheddar cheese, ripened red tomatoes, plenty of beef bacon, and crispy onion strings. It’s served with hickory BBQ sauce and a brioche-style bun. The meat was cooked medium-well, making it nicely succulent and juicy. As for the bacon, they were delightfully crispy, with just the right amount of salt. The good people at The Counter also gave us a side of sweet potato fries, which went great with the earthy beef. When it comes to the Vegan Veggie OnePounder, one wouldn’t believe that the patty is made out of vegetarian ingredients. Made with over 10 different ingredients, we were told that this patty takes up to six hours to prepare! The end result is absolutely delicious. There’s a little bit of sweetness from sweet corn and raisins, and a little bit of spiciness from what’s likely to be grounded pepper. A bit of advice when you’re eating this, or any other one-pounder burger – it takes two. Our burger indulgence was made complete with dessert – Key Lime Pie and a Caramel + Chocolate Brownie. The Key Lime Pie is something that’s very refreshing and tangy, making it a perfect finisher for any meaty dishes. As for the brownie, it’s served with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, and it is absolutely a chocolatelover’s dream come true. In summary, if you’re looking for the perfect burger, just head on over to The Counter, where you’re likely to find it, and much more!

Quick Facts #1 All sauces are made fresh, in-house, on a daily basis.

#2 All smoothies make use of AT LEAST 350g of ice cream!

#3 The fries are imported. #4 The beef is imported from Australia #5 The beef is hormone + antibiotic free! #6 All the buns are sourced from a five-star hotel in Malaysia.

Definition Of A Cool Parent

JUly 2015

What Would You Do To Be A Cool Parent? What’s the best way to get closer to your children and to make them feel you’re a cool parent? We figured that it’s time to let you think about it before that day comes to you, for real. For this issue, we have the Multimedia University’s Finance students sharing their thoughts on this. Let them give you some head ups in what you should be doing to make yourself a cool parent!

I think hanging out with my kids’ friends and to be as supportive as possible to whatever they wish to do would make me a cool mum.

I believe that each generation have different ways of taking care of them. But in this generation, I think that we require more patience because the youngsters nowadays believe in being independent and would like to do the things that they truly believe in without taking others’ opinion into account.

Explore my children’s potentials and concentrate on what they are interested in or maybe talented in is what I will do to be a cool parent. Don’t force them to be who you want them to be, but who they want to be.

Keep the fridge full of junk food! So whenever my children opens the fridge, they will always have something to eat. And that’s what a cool parent will do.

The Good Girls (Perfectionists Series Vol. 2)

The Great Zoo of China AUTHOR: MATTHEW REILLY

AUTHOR: SARA SHEPARD

The author of the bestselling series ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ is back with a new work of fiction for young adult readers! Instead of Becky Bloomwood, the role of heroine is filled by 14 year-old Audrey this time, who suffers not from an addiction to shopping but an SOPHIE KINSELLA anxiety disorder. With her therapist Dr Sarah, she is making steady but slow progress, until she meets Linus, who is her brother’s gaming teammate. Around him, she feels energised, and is able to connect with him like no one before. With Linus’s help, her condition improves, as does the state of her family.

If you loved the Pretty Little Liars series and tune in religiously to the onscreen version, you will not want to miss out on this new novel from the same author. The second in The Perfectionists series, the story revolves around Mackenzie, Ava, Julie, Parker and Caitlin, five high school seniors who SARA SHEPARD appear to have it all from good grades to good looks to hot boyfriends. Despite the perfect facade, they are actually wanted for a murder they didn’t commit. Trouble is, the true murderer got wind of their unrealised revenge plans, and is now carrying them out exactly as they intended to.

After keeping it under wraps for forty years, the secret is out: the Chinese government is revealed to have been harbouring dragons. Real life, fire breathing ones. Now, the Chinese are planning to unveil the creatures and their findings within what they dub “the greatest zoo ever constructed”. MATTHEW REILLY A small group of VIPs and journalists are then invited to the zoo deep within China to study the dragons for the first time, one of them being Dr Cassandra Jane Cameron who works for National Geographic. They are assured by their hosts that everything is safe, and that nothing can go wrong, but will it?

In a mug, add in all the wet ingredients and mix them together using a fork until batter is smooth. Top it up with the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Centre your mug in the middle of the microwave oven and cook for 50 seconds. Be careful not to overcook, as batter will become dense and rubbery. Let cake cool slightly before piping on cream cheese frosting (optional).

Wet Ingredients •

3 tablespoons vegetable oil (corn oil, sunflower oil or canola oil) 3 tablespoons buttermilk (we opted for yogurt, it works the same!) 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Bear in mind that every microwave is different so cooking time may vary. Our microwave heats at 1,200 watts. Check yours and adjust your cooking time accordingly. To avoid your sweet treat from being eggy or rubbery, do not overcook your cake. Less is more. Cook it for the allocated time and if it looks like it needs a little bit more, just add around 15 seconds interval and you should end up with the perfect mug cake. Your cake is cooked when it has stopped rising and is firm to the touch.

lot comes into play when taking a stunning selfie – lighting, angle, composition etc. What really takes it to the next level though, is a formidable camera. With the launch of its latest gadget, Casio has shown that it is two steps ahead of the game. To unveil the selfie-oriented camera, a mini fiesta was held at chic Taman Tun cafe Thursdvys, with plenty of fresh-faced bloggers in tow. In line with the vibrant, youthful vibe of the Exilim EX-ZR3500, the venue was upgraded to a saccharine wonderland, complete with pastel-coloured balloons and sweet, photogenic pastries.

Casio Malaysia’s Managing Director, Sezai Hiroyuki kicked things off with a rousing speech on the background of the company and Casio’s unique relationship with the selfie craze. Following that, Business Relations Executive Nelson Ong gave us an in-depth look at the camera as he explained its features, which include a

beautifying Make-up Plus mode and effortless photo transfer between the camera and your smartphone. The most glamorous segment of the afternoon undoubtedly came from DJ Vera C, who demonstrated the art of taking a knockout selfie using those exact features. Apparently, an event of this nature would not be complete without a contest. Selfie-takers were asked to bring their skills to the fore by taking photos of themselves using the ZR3500, with the winner standing a chance to win one of their own. Hankering to take photos using more than just your phone’s front camera? The Casio Exilim EX-ZR3500 is now available locally at the recommended retail price of RM1,699. CAMPUS PLUS |

HUMOUR

Q: Did you hear about the kidnapping at school? A: It’s okay. He woke up.

My friend thinks he is smart. He told me an onion is the only food that makes you cry, so I threw a coconut at his face.

Instead of “the John”, I call my toilet “the Jim”. That way, it sounds better when I say I go to the Jim first thing every morning.
