Wave Goodbye, Say Hello!

P

hew! So here we are. 2015 is over and we’re rushing in to embrace a brand new year! Many of us are looking forward to the New Year for fresh starts and new beginnings – whether it’s refreshing your wardrobe, picking up a new hobby or completing unfinished resolutions from 2015! (Yes, some of us are still dreaming of losing 10 pounds while munching on a Snickers bar.) If you’re starting off a new semester in college/university, we’ve saved you the headache of figuring what to wear to class on a daily basis, check out some of our favourite chic ensembles on Campus Chic (page 34). Don’t worry boys, we didn’t forget about you; flip over to page 44 for party-outfit inspirations to last you the year. For a little inspiration, we’d recommend getting to know some of the movers and shakers like the Taylor’s University Racing Team, who recently recruited a female driver (page 16) and an A-list of faces to keep an eye out for in the coming year (page 26). We’re really excited for the coming year and we hope you stick around with us for the exciting journey ahead!

TAYLOR’S RACING TEAM

JANUARY 2016

On The Edge Of Glory

Although it was founded just five years ago, Taylor’s University’s Racing Team has already captured the attention of many a student with F1-sized dreams and chalked up an illustrious list of achievements in the local racing circuit. Among them is the distinction of being the first Malaysian team to take part in the international competition, Formula SAE (FSAE), which requires participants to design a small Formula-style race car. The team also recently welcomed its first lady racer, Farah Raman Danial, who will go on to represent them (now that’s girl power!). With a team as exciting as this happening right in our backyard, we simply had to find out more about what makes them – and their cars – tick. To do that, we spoke to Justin Moo, who is the current team leader of Taylor’s Racing Team:

Campus Plus: What are some of the criteria students have to fulfill before becoming a member, if there are any? Is there a membership fee? Justin Moo: There is no membership fee, and Taylor’s Racing Team welcomes anyone who’s not afraid to put their hands to good use and get them dirty. Passion for the automotive aspect is also a good quality to have. As a matter of fact, most of our team members are not mainly interested in car racing but have a deep desire to learn and improve themselves. We are willing to commit to the projects we’re involved in and push ourselves to unknown limits, because there is a thirst to learn outside the classroom. 16

| CAMPUS PLUS

CP: What usually goes on during team meetings? JM: We don’t have a set time to meet as we spend time together working, especially when preparing for a race or building a new project. Team members will take charge of different departments as well as members of their individual departments, and lead them to complete their tasks without much supervision. We do have formal meetings, which centre on essential discussions - for example, a post mortem meeting after a race or a briefing before we head off to compete in an upcoming race.

CP: What is next for the Racing Team? JM: We’ve just returned from competing in the Formula - SAE competition, so it’s about taking the lessons from that and improving our performance. The team’s all-time aim was to participate in prestigious international events like FSAE. This year, with the full support from sponsors like MOTUL, Motorsport Playground, Hankook and many more, we were able to achieve this dream. As it was our first year competing in this race, our aim was just to complete the race without much fault. It was an experience that filled us with pride, as we were the first team from Malaysia to ever participate in FSAE.

CP: What are some of the usual activities that the team engages in? JM: We spend most of our time in the engineering lab, being involved in manufacturing and designing work. Most of the tasks we carry out allow us to maximise our learning experience as well as keep the expenditure of the team low. In order to have a relaxing time after a long working period, the team usually heads off to a Go-Kart session or a simple dinner where we just get to relax and unwind in each other’s company. CP: How does Taylor’s University provide support for the Racing Team? JM: Taylor’s provides us with allowances such as the expenses for transportation of the equipment and the race car ahead of a race. However, as motorsport is expensive, we have a department - the sponsorship team – that is always on the lookout for sponsors to assist, be it in terms of cash or parts. It’s a department that’s run solely by the members of the team, and they are constantly searching for new ways to market the team and brush up on their presentation skills in order to secure sponsorship. Some of Taylor’s alumni who used to be members continue to support us in terms of sponsorship in parts. PracWorks, a company founded and run by our pioneers, helps us out in this aspect. Some of our alumni also still guide and provide us advice based on their experiences.

CP: How do the team members balance their responsibilities within the team with the demands of their studies? JM: There’s no perfect formula in balancing our education with our passion. We have been successful so far in working on our assignments and studying and working in the labs at the same time, which sometimes goes on till the early hours of the morning. We believe that at the end of the day, all the hard work and experiences will be beneficial to ourselves and that is the driving force behind what we do. CP: Tell us about some of the coolest accomplishments that the Racing Team has achieved so far. JM: Since 2010, the team has achieved top placing for most of the races that we have participated in. The recent accomplishment for the team is that we welcomed the third generation of student team members, and one of the drivers for the big race we have just completed is a female driver. It’s been our aim to have a female driver represent the team and university, and with the latest generation, we are proud to have Farah Raman Danial as our first lady racer. The most poignant achievement for us is when we were crowned the overall champion in Formula Varsity 2010, the first race that the founding team participated in.

CP: What does Taylor’s Racing Team hope to fulfil in the long run? JM: The mission of Taylor’s Racing Team is not solely to let students build race cars and race them, but to maximise learning outside the classrooms, meet industry professionals and pitch to multinational and even international companies. We act as a platform for people who are interested to learn and experience the ups and downs of being in a racing team, and also interested in putting their skills to the test and pushing their abilities to the limits. We believe that anyone is capable of producing or creating something extraordinary, and we believe each member of the team is able to achieve his/her personal breakthrough by being part of the team.

Jangles in the Bells

january 2016

Jaggfuzzbeats:

Folks on the Rocks Get Personal The folk-rock boom that began in the late 1960s, in retrospect, was inevitable. We had American folk singers and root bands, starting with Bob Dylan, going electric and sifting through Folkways comps. However, it wasn’t until early in the 21st century that this subgenre truly took hold and started climbing charts. Closer to home, our indie rock community has begun taking cues from folk music with indiefolk artistes like Jaggfuzzbeats (JGFZBTS) gracing the scene. The outfit traces its genesis back to everyone’s teenage reverie; high school bands. With a couple of members departing

from the band later on, the remaining members eventually stopped gigging until around August 2014 when two souls – Azrul and Omar – decided to initiate what they fondly dub a “little project”. “After a while, we were just itching to dabble with music again. And along the way, it turned into something that we’re determined to pursue. Our fervour for music basically gave birth to JGFZBTS,” expresses Azrul who is currently a graphic design student. The neat ensemble comprises of two collective souls: Omar who rocks the drums and Azrul who takes charge of the vocals while shredding it on the guitar. Layering various

instruments on a pop-rock foundation, JGFZBTS also regularly invites guests to spice up their gig with fellow musicians namely Hazrol Muiz sessioning as a bassist and Azfar Abu Bakar (Orang) leading on guitar. From hitting the books to jam sessions, the two-piece band has pledged an unwavering commitment in managing their respective priorities without compromising their devotion to music. “Even our sessionists are currently studying and working. Hence, our practices are mostly during the weekends. On the bright side, we’ve gotten accustomed to working around their schedules,” shares Omar who is pursuing Mass Communication.

Music Conversation Albeit their tongue-twisting name, JGFZBTS actually carries a magnitude of wittiness and creativity (dare we say). “It’s hilarious because the band name wasn’t even conceived by us. My brother, Azim just popped in our rehearsal one day and suggested it”, laughs the 20year-lad. The significance behind the band’s flag was inspired by none other than Azrul’s rig, a Fender Jaguar (read: Jagg) and his prized effect that he regularly uses on guitar tracks (read: Fuzz) along with Omar’s sick drum beats (read: Beats); hence the dawn of JAGG-FUZZ-BEATS. The fluidity of the band is perhaps a facet that we admire the most. Drawing influences from myriad of genres, namely alternative rock, garage rock, blues rock, psychedelic pop, neopsychedelia, jangle pop to space rock (yes, it exists!) – the duo’s music is equipped to paint a variety of sketches from the mellow illustration of empty streets on a rainy day to the YOLO spirit of whooping up a party. “Just to name a few, we tap into Kings of Leon, The Strokes, The Black Keys, Tame Impala, Mac De Macro and Broken Bells as our fountain of inspiration. They are our muse!” enthuses Omar. In the absence of formal lessons in music, the chaps pretty much picked up their musical chops along the way mainly by counting on each other throughout the learning curve. “We’re always bouncing off ideas and new ways of creating music. It’s amusing”, says Azrul with a grin. Over the years, as JGFZBTS grew together through thick and thin, they too had stumbled upon their fair share of hurdles. “One of our most nerve wrecking experiences was when we had to drill for our live performance at The Wknd Sessions. It was challenging as we had to spend a lot of time for rehearsals in the studio. And that pretty much strapped us off our financial radar but in the end, we are just grateful we managed to work it through”, adds Omar.

Live Gigs It is self-evident that JGFZBTS champions in captivating the simple and direct songwriting style of folk music and melds it to a touch of blues and pop beats. With such distinct style, it was almost a given that the duo be invited by The Bee to rock the stage for their Tunes & Pint night. “For many musicians, it may not be a “big” thing but for us, it was kind of our biggest break. We needed exactly that sort of motivation to

propel us into playing and doing more in music”, reveals Azrul. Interestingly, the set they had during the Wknd Sessions Live was also one that was overflowing with good vibes, ultimately making it the band’s most memorable gig. Hitting their first benchmark of a year as a band, the pair have also been blessed with opportunities to perform live shows at various venues. From merely playing for open mic nights at The Bee or Merdekarya, JGFZBTS gradually racked up their list of shows. Last year, they graced their first ever festival, My Music Festival 2015 at Sunway Lagoon followed by a feature on The Wknd Sessions Live and finally, the squad managed to score an opening show for the famed bands, Sphere & SevenCollar T-Shirt. To date, the band is still taken aback by the popularity of their original track, “Hours”. What initially appeared to the duo as a sad song with a cheesy hook, turned out to be a track that has gained them the most recognition. “I guess people think it’s catchy and they like it. It’s always an assurance knowing that people like our music,” adds Omar. Aside from gigging their own tracks like “Hours” and “Wasted Nights”, the band also covers an assortment of bands from Alt-J, Kings of Leon to The Strokes.

Music Platform If you wish to track down their dope tracks, visit their Souncloud page at soundcloud. com/jgfzbts and YouTube channel under “jaggfuzzbeats’. Head over their Facebook page at facebook.com/ jaggfuzzbeats to follow their upcoming shows. Trust us this jewel is certainly one that you wouldn’t want to miss out live!

Down the Road with Music In the long run, JGFZBTS strives to travel on a world tour while playing shows as their bread and butter. At the moment, the duo is dedicating their efforts towards releasing an EP. “We’re also looking to complement our very first release with a lot of shows “, states Azrul. Right off the bat and throughout their hits, JGFZBTS’ music is sure to enthrall you with just the right dose of folk-blue-driven rock music laced with Azrul’s distinctive and clear vocal harmonies that are powerfully emotional (but trust us, not whiney).

If you guys could perform with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Whoa, there’re a lot to choose from. We would love to perform with Dave Grohl because he’s such a badass but yet all around, a sweet dude. We certainly wouldn’t mind performing with him even if it’s just for one song. Is there anyone you guys would like to acknowledge for supporting you thus far? Our families and friends have been really supportive of what we’re doing and we’re so grateful for that. And of course, we’re forever indebted to all who gave in their time to listen to us and took the effort to come down to one of our shows. We really appreciate all the support as it has paved the way in getting where we are now. What is the band’s favourite self-composed track to date? Our tracks are like our children so it’s tough for us to actually pick one (hahaha). We’re proud of all the tracks we’ve composed but if we were to pin it down, I guess it’s “Damncoldurban”. We’re just happy with how it came out. Describe Jaggfuzzbeats’ four words. Jangles that tangles.

Burning Bridges

| BON JOVI

Born In The Echoes | The Chemical Brothers

Resembling a contractual kiss-off to their record label of over 30 years, this ‘fan’ and 13th album from the rock icons carries a bittersweet message, creative sound and snarky lyrics, in true Bon Jovi style. Yes, it is missing the songwriting touch and tasty guitar licks of Richie Sambora, but they make up for it with Jon’s edgy and angst-ridden lines. The title track, ‘Burning Bridges’ plays like a fun and happy folk song, but the lyrics are a scathing indictment of his former label. ‘A Teardrop to the Sea’ also directs that angst against the label, while the chest-thumping anthem ‘We Don’t Run’ is another noteworthy track. Overall, a solid effort that should leave Bon Jovi fans satisfied until the release of their next album.

The granddaddies of mainstream dance music (what’s known as EDM now), Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands are still redefining the genre with their eighth studio album. That’s great news for fans as the duo continue doing things their way, breaking new ground that is free from boundaries and that’s evident on tracks such as ‘Sometimes I Feel So Deserted’, ‘Go’ and ‘Under Neon Lights’. Killer hooks then give way to psychedelic dance pop grooves via ‘Reflexion’. What’s most impressive across the album is the Chemical Brothers’ ability to collaborate with big name artistes of different genres and still come off sounding uniquely themselves. Definitely worth raving an EDM session to.

Honeymoon

Beneath The Skin

| Lana Del Rey

Del Rey’s back with her third full studio album, which unsurprisingly slows things down two notches from her previous two releases. That’s a good thing, as it affords the starlet the opportunity to stretch her creative side and bring the listener’s focus back to the music. ‘Honeymoon’ sets the tone for things to come – starting off with a haunting orchestral score before Lana’s dreamy vocals kick in and provide a lullaby-like calm to the track. ‘Salvatore’ plays in a similar sonic vein while ‘God Knows I Tried’, ‘High By The Beach’ and ‘Art Deco’ encompasses a more up-tempo beat. Honeymoon shows us a different side of Del Rey, one which is world-weary yet longingly hoping for better honeymoons to come

| Of Monsters And Men

The Icelandic six-member indie/folk-pop band goes darker in the follow-up to their saccharin sweet debut album of My Head Is An Animal. While My Head Is An Animal boasted of forays into the whimsical, the new album goes the opposite end and takes life more seriously, exploring the naturalistic wildness of human behaviour. For instance, ‘Human’ addresses the connection between man and beast and how it’s a thin line separating the two. Nanna’s haunting vocals lend an ethereal quality to all the tracks here, especially so on ‘Organs’ – a heartfelt ballad heavy on the acoustic guitar and piano. Overall, this album features a darker poetic side that’s arranged and expressed in a tighter aural crescendo.

movies review

JANUARY 2016

movies by cheryl tai

In all honesty, 2015 was not as great of a movie year compared to 2014 which surprised me with gems like The Grand Budapest Hotel, Whiplash, Still Alice, Nightcrawler, Gone Girl, How To Train Your Dragon 2 and The Winter Soldier. But nevertheless, there were at least 10 in my list that made it.

1. A BRILLIANT YOUNG MIND

2. Mad Max : Fury Road

This indie film is about Nathan (Asa Butterfield), a teenage mathematical genius who struggles with autism. Socially awkward and reserved, he sets off on a journey to Taipei as he lands a spot at the International Mathematical Olympiad. By far the most heartfelt and life-affirming story told on screen. This film doesn’t sugar coat anything as it tells the story exactly how it is, although the characters are complex individuals who are not comfortable in their own skin. Nathan’s family are loving, patient, committed and his friends are understanding math prodigies. The movie was successful at showing the world through Nathan’s eyes. For example, how it is to be autistic and the challenges that comes with it. Sally Hawkins plays a damaged mother phenomenally and Asa Butterfield does a career defining performance once again as a cold boy who hides in the safety of his own world. The music and direction of this film was close to perfection, if not perfect. The last scene reminded me of why I have a burning passion for film and the art of film making. This movie somehow managed to make me feel significant and loved, how everyone deserve to feel.

Audience of this generation got the opportunity to witness the fourth Mad Max film after 30 years since it’s last release. Max (Tom Hardy) is captured by a strange group of people who are led by this person they view almost as if he’s a religious figure who wears a mask (otherwise known as Skeletor and Darth Vader’s love child). Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) is trying to get a group of really attractive girls she cares about to safety while looking for her homeland and Max is the character caught in the middle of all this. I have only one way to describe this movie - absolute madness! I had so much fun with this movie, my eyes were glued to the screen as it really was a non-stop action thrill ride. It’s nail biting, seat gripping awesomeness. The action sequences were wide shot and extremely well filmed. I thought the film might as well have been called Furiosa Road (and Mad Max) because the character that dominated this film was non other than our main badass, Imperator Furiosa. This action packed film will certainly leave its mark on how action films should and will be made in the future.

4. The Stanford Prison Experiment Based on a true story in 1971,The Stanford University Psychology Department created a simulated jail using students as prisoners and guards. The results that shocked the world influenced psychological history greatly and is now made into a chilling thriller. This movie was so disturbing and compelling that it made me forget I was watching a movie. I have chills all over thinking how well the young actors portrayed their respective characters. Although the film only circled around a corridor, the outstanding cast and authentic story telling keeps the film intense. This is not a movie you can just shake off easily and forget about. It shows how fragile our personalities really are and how a situation can become a reality. The depths and terror of psychology still haunts me until today.

3. Kingsman : The Secret Service Eggsy (Taron Egerton) whose late father secretly worked for a spy organisation, seems to be heading for life behind bars until dapper agent Harry Hart (Colin Firth) recognises potential in him and recruits him to be a trainee in the secret service. Meanwhile, villainous Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) launches a plan to end climate change by undergoing a worldwide killing spree. I think Kingsman is a modern twist to old school British spy films such as the James Bond franchise. The way the action scenes were crafted, filmed and choreographed was stylish and top notch. One can never forget the humour and the performance by the main character Eggsy. The fact that the characters especially Eggsy had a background that sets up well added humanity made the audience care even more about his character once the action started. The film was unpredictable unlike what majority of the movies are now. Even when it stops making sense at times, it was still great fun to watch.

5. Ant Man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is a master thief just released from prison. Original Ant Man Dr Hank Pym recruits Scott Lang to take up the role of Ant Man because he needs Scott to prevent Yellowjacket (villain) from perfecting the same technology as Ant Man and using it as a weapon for evil. I’m not going to lie and say that I didn’t think this film was absurd before I watched it and nagged about how Black Widow is not turned into a movie but a superhero the size of an ant is. We are getting the smallest (literally) Marvel superhero brought onto the silver screen. However, Ant Man proves that although the scale of this film was nowhere close to other Marvel films, it doesn’t mean it cannot be as good or even better. This film was a breath of fresh air as the action sequence was nothing I’ve ever seen before. The chemistry between Dr Hank Pym, Hope Pym and Scott Lang was amazing. Luis (Michael Pena) was comedy gold and nailed every single line uttered from his mouth. The CGI sequence was terrific and I liked how this movie tied in with Falcon. It’s exciting, entertaining and everything I wanted it to be.

6. Southpaw Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) has a great record as a boxer until something terrible happens in his life that forces him to rethink his priorities and get his A game back. It does sound straightforward and similar to something you’ve seen before but I promise you Southpaw is a very well directed, filmed and acted from the very beginning towards the very end. Jake Gyllenhaal, delivers and blows me away once again. I can honestly say that he is the most deserving actor to take home an Oscar next year. It was realistic and gritty but not overly melodramatic. The way they filmed the boxing matches were very effective and thankfully minimal shaky cameras were used in this film. I was greatly invested and inspired watching this film. A passionate director alongside an amazing cast made Southpaw earn a well deserved grade A.

7. Me, Earl and The Dying Girl An awkward high school senior Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann) and a gravely ill classmate Rachel (Olivia Cooke) surprises themselves by becoming inseparable friends. Until today, I’m not exactly sure why I cried for this film when it came to an end. This movie is the first and only movie that made me question my own feelings. It’s not a textbook “coming of age” film but it stands alone as a non-sappy nor emotionally manipulative movie. It goes against all clichés with light hearted characters that slowly grow on you. I couldn’t think of anyone who can replace the three main stars. They were nothing short of perfect. This movie teaches us the value of friendship and to always seize the moment. Also, major thumbs up to the set and design team for making such a visually enticing film.

8.The Martian Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is an astronaut. He’s part of a crew of astronauts on Mars but a storm rolled in and they evacuated immediately but he was left behind. He was presumed dead although he survived, stranded on Mars where nothing is alive. How is he going to survive? Now that’s when the movie takes place. This movie is literally Castaway meets Apollo 13 but I’m not complaining. The main character Mark Watney is extremely likeable and it makes the audience root for him. The Martian shows that it’s not trying to be the Interstellar in a sense that it has so much good humour that brought life to genre of the film. It changes how we typically view scientific films which is normally perceived as serious and gloomy. The Martian is really about the fight of survival and how people come together to save one person. It had great cinematography, great execution, good script and a good suspense. It was inspiring to watch a human life and the fight to save it but also how science is so significant in our lives.

9.Fast and Furious 7 Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) comes back thirsty for revenge in order to avenge the death of his older brother. So, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and “family” sets off for another Fast and Furious adventure. I had so much fun with this movie despite the fact that it didn’t even make sense most of the times. As someone who likes to judge a film like how a mother judges a daughter-in-law, I finally let loose when Iggy Azalea appeared out of nowhere. The Fast and Furious franchise were made for audience to see unrealistic things like cars flying in and out of buildings. These over the top scenes made the franchise successful and very enjoyable. By the way, it’s by James Wan (Malaysian director!). My favourite scene was definitely watching Michelle Rodriguez and Ronda Rousey go head to head with one another. Fans of the series will no doubt enjoy this one as the franchise just keeps getting better. It was also a perfect send off for Paul Walker’s passing. It was a good fast paced movie which featured furious characters.

10. Avengers : Age Of Ultron Ultron is an AI created by Tony Stark which decided to end the human race so the Avengers are back to save the world and stop all evil. The Avengers had some big shoes to fill as the Marvel Cinematic Universe definitely did step up their game. The best part of this film was definitely the villain Ultron (James Spader). His persona made the stakes high, flipped the mood of the movie around and made it deeper with a lot of character development. The fact that they decided to introduce three new main characters into a film where all Avengers were already squeezed into one movie, is very impressive. I enjoyed watching the back story of each character and how they went deeper into the character, conflict and emotions. It made them seem more like human beings than superheroes which I thought was close to heart. Although I still think Brucenat was absolutely irrelevant, the action was great and the Age Of Ultron was definitely a comic book fan’s dream.

6 Faces to Watch Out For in 2016

New year, new beginnings, new stars. With enough perseverance and a pinch of luck, anyone can get a chance to shine. This year, we’re putting our money on these six faces. Coming from various walks of life, each one of these people have slowly but surely amassed impressive credentials in their respective fields in 2015. If you don’t know who they are yet, you will soon, because you’re hearing about them here first. Read on to find out what Brian, Caleb, Daphne, Fabian, Jiven and Katrina have in store for 2016. i photography: kamil haziq i Makeup and hairstyling: EDY’s Place Hair Studio i

What are you up to in 2016? I will definitely continue to find opportunities in acting to improve my craft in the performing arts. Meanwhile, I’ll also venture into script writing and directing. What are two things you learned in 2015 that will move you forward in 2016? The first is communication. This is especially true in the arts, as sometimes it is hard to clearly communicate sophisticated human sentiments. I’ve learned about the communication breakdown that happens when concepts are misunderstood, so (to fix that) the concepts must be conveyed in a more vivid way, with support from examples

and evidence. I’ve also learned more about inspiration, which is the root of every art piece. With true and honest inspiration, nothing can go wrong. What is the one thing that you absolutely must knock off your resolution list by the end of 2016? Replacing my old car. In your opinion, what’s gonna be hot in 2016? Minimalism in terms of all types of design, from furniture to movie posters to restaurant menus to phone software. What’s a weakness you want to work on? I’m way too emotional. The nature of my work leads to having to deal with emotions and sentiments all the time. Sometimes it’s hard for me to seek a balance between work and my personal life, and sometimes sentiments at work affects personal ones.

Fabian Loo, actor and model

The Raw Thespian With his boyish good looks and easy smile, it’s easy to see which industry Fabian is cut out for. While his time in showbiz is relatively short, his future is undeniably bright as he has already garnered the attention of critics for his ability to tap into raw emotion to deliver an authentic performance onscreen. While he doesn’t wear that many hats just yet, it actually works to his advantage as it has allowed him to focus on honing his acting prowess – something which has rewarded him in the form of multiple TV series and movies. Follow him at www.facebook.com/fabianloopage and www.instagram.com/fabianloo

Brian See, lifestyle blogger and model

The Social Media Influencer With his ever changing tresses (it’s blonde now) and statuesque frame, Brian See stands out in a crowd just by standing in it. Add to that equation a chiselled jawline and sharp sense of fashion and you have a bona fide social media star. If you ever need menswear style tips, Brian’s Instagram account is a deep well of inspiration as not a day goes by without a painstakingly put together #OOTD that will give you serious wardrobe envy. Brian See is a blogger with

What are you up to in 2016? 2016 will be a whole new challenge for me as I would like to focus more on my modelling career. Hopefully I can become more active in commercials, photo shoots and also on the runway. I also wouldn’t reject the opportunity to venture into acting or hosting too. What are two things you learned in 2015 that will move you forward in 2016? The two things I’ve learned in 2015 are to be humble and never give up. I’ve realised that being humble is the key to improving and also succeeding in life. The other thing that I learned is to never give up, because after joining a model contest in Taiwan last year and failing to win the title, I began to understand that a competition is just a learning process and I should not give up on chasing my dreams.

What is the one thing that you absolutely must knock off your resolution list by the end of 2016? To travel! I want to travel somewhere that I’ve never been to before, to explore the world outside, and to gain experience and inspiration overseas. In your opinion, what’s gonna be hot in 2016? Definitely the weather! Hahaha. But, if you’re talking about fashion, I’d say that colours and minimalism will be the trends. What’s your vice/poison? I will have to say goodbye to Mr. Procrastination! It’s the one bad habit that I have to change, in order to work more efficiently and stop wasting time.

What are you up to in 2016? I’m currently working on three books; two in English with MPH which are sports-related and one in Bahasa Malaysia which is a coffee table book about the tales of people in Kampung Kerinchi, KL. Besides that, I’m also organising the first Swimming Carnival & Fundraising event for NASOM (National Autism Society of Malaysia) which will be held in conjunction with National Autism Awareness Week in April. I’m very excited about this project! I’m currently applying to a Political Science & Sociology Degree Programme in France as well. Alongside all of these wonderful things, I’m also the Programme Director of Synchronised Swimming for D Swim Academy and am excited for the club to continue to grow. What are two things you learned in 2015 that will move you forward in 2016? I’d say the two main things I’d learned would be one, learning to let go and accept the things you cannot change, and two, being more independent and accepting other people’s opinions while making sure that I stay true to myself. What is the one thing that you absolutely must knock off your resolution list by the end of 2016? I’d say jump off a cliff but I already did that in Thailand in August! The next one would be to finish my book.

Katrina Ann, aspiring author, coach and former national athlete

The MultiHyphenate Having six SEA Games gold medals to your name by the age of 22 is enough to set you apart from everyone else, but Katrina is not one for complacency, as she has already set out to achieve even greater and more diverse things after retiring from competing for Malaysia. In fact, she already has a multitude of occupations to keep her busy, such as choreographer, coach and – the latest – author. Follow her at www.facebook.com/KatrinaAnn22 and www.instagram.com/katrinaann22

In your opinion, what’s gonna be hot in 2016? 2016 is the year of Adele. Hellooooo (laughs). I think a lot of bold prints would be hot too, maybe. Bright colours, although I’m usually a monochrome kinda gal, as most of my wardrobe is either black, white or grey, so 2016 may not be my year! What’s your vice/poison? Coffee…I need coffee before anything. I’m such a grouch in the morning if I’ve not had my coffee, haha!

Daphne Charice, lifestyle blogger, musician and co-founder of the café Project Space

The Social Media Influencer This photogenic social media personality lives and breathes art, a trait which has been realised through various creative outlets – one of them being coffee hangout Project Space, a venture co-founded and co-owned with best friend and fellow influencer Jane Chuck, and the other being her acoustic pop music covers. You’ll usually find her manning the coffee machine behind the counter in Project Space, or up front and centre for a musical performance at the café. Daphne Charice is a blogger with

Follow her at www.daphnecharice.com and www.instagram.com/daphnecharice

What are you up to in 2016? I would like to produce my own music. I love to sing as it helps me to express myself better. What are two things you learned in 2015 that will move you forward in 2016? I am still learning to be more confident, and wiser too. What is the one thing that you absolutely must knock off your resolution list by the end of 2016? I need to watch Beyonce, Sam Smith or James Bay live. In your opinion, what’s gonna be hot in 2016? Daphne Charice will be hot (No, I’m just joking, but see what I did there? Confidence.). I won’t speak for others, but personally, I feel that how you dress yourself up represents who you are, regardless of trends. Don’t be afraid to be yourself! What’s a weakness you want to work on? Not being confident. It may take some time to build my confidence up, but at least I’m moving towards that direction!

What are you up to in 2016? 2016 is going to be a fun year. I am going full time with YouTube, and Caleb will be helping me out part time for now, then come on-board fulltime later in 2016, which means more short films! We love telling stories and one of our main goals is to tell stories that connect with, inspire and visually amaze people. And, we are also really excited to make our first DC-esque short film in 2016. (whispering) Sci-fi… What are two things you learned in 2015 that will move you forward in 2016? What we have learned in 2015 is that if you put in the effort, you will see results. Also, quality and content matter. So, for 2016 we will move forward with videos of higher quality. I wrote some scripts over a year ago that I put on hold because I wanted Caleb to learn the camerawork, so that we are able to do the shorts as a team. After a year of learning, we are both confident enough to make bigger things happen as a team.

What is the one thing that you absolutely must knock off your resolution list by the end of 2016? OMG, get Caleb a girlfriend! People are asking if we are together, and I must clarify that we are not, and we are as straight as a ruler. I need to get this guy settled down first, because he’s ruining my ‘market’. Jokes aside, making a sci-fi short film has always been a dream of mine that I hope to check off by the end of 2016. We have been experimenting with graphics and stuff to make sure we know how to execute this without letting it lose its quality. In your opinion, what’s gonna be hot in 2016? Wow this one is a bit hard. Personally, I think it’s going to be a big year for startups. As for trends, I’m not sure about this but let’s make guys or girls with afros a thing! 2015 was the year of the beard, so let’s make 2016 all about the afro please. Harlo, let’s afro! What’s your vice/poison? One vice we have in common is – we love pranking people. Like, if it’s the first time you’re meeting us, we would most definitely pull a prank on you. We’ve pissed off so many of our friends because the pranks sometimes go overboard, but hey guys, you know we love you right?

The DIY Guide to 2016 Makeup Trends

When

the

Spring/Summer

collections were shown last fall, beauty pundits everywhere scrambled to pin down what would be the pivotal beauty looks of the first season this year. Now that the collections have made their rounds in the fashion dailies and the dust from the last of the shows have been swept away, the results are in, and here are the four most beautiful – yet easy to create – looks that you should be paying attention to.

#1 Bare Skin

Statement Lip Numerous designers made their love for bold lips known this season – from Victoria Beckham to Marchesa to Jason Wu. To make it pop even further, the rest of the face was kept simple, almost to a bare extent. The lips don’t necessarily have to be fire engine red; you can also experiment with fuchsia, purple and orange. To achieve this look, apply your favourite moisturiser and top it up with primer, then finish off with concealer, but skip the foundation so that your skin retains a dewy yet flawless look. To make it look like it was drawn on by an expert, line your lips with a lip liner in a slightly darker shade than the lipstick before swiping the latter on.

Blue Eyeshadow While blue eyeshadow was previously thought to be the domain of the 70s, designers from Monique Lhuillier to Diane Von Furstenberg to Marc Jacobs were steadfastly united in their quest to bring it to the present with their latest collections. While the presentations were different (creamy ombre blue at Diane Von Furstenberg and messy strokes of midnight blue at Marc Jacobs), you can adapt this bold colour for an everyday look by keeping the makeup on the rest of your face minimal. If a full lid of blue eyeshadow seems too daunting already, start small by dipping an eyeliner brush in a cream eyeshadow and use the formula as – you guessed it – eyeliner instead.

#3 lit from within

Bronzed Skin As the contouring and baking fever reached a new high in 2015, bronzers became a ubiquitous part of many a woman’s vanity table. Designers got the memo, and toned it down just enough to give models a healthy, shimmering flush for the season. One of the effortless looks to pull off, all you need to do is sweep a gold-flecked bronzer below your cheekbones, and dab some highlighter above the contoured line. For extra structure, you can also apply the bronzer on the edges of your jaw and your temples. Other highly recommended highlight spots are the bridge of your nose, your cupid’s bow and your brow bone. Still craving a little more shine? Elevate your look by applying a bronze eyeshadow on your lids.

1. Ulu Muda, Kedah If living in the city has been getting you down lately, how does traipsing through the forest in search of wildlife and bathing in natural hot springs sound to you? Situated 2 hours away by car from Alor Star or three hours away by boat, visitors need to apply for permits from the Kedah State Forestry Department and arrange for authorised guides before they can begin their adventure. However, the rewards outweigh the preparation. Once you get there you are in a remote location, surrounded by nothing but untouched greenery. Here you will get the chance to feast your eyes on normally elusive animals, such as elephants and tapirs, now completely in their natural habitat. 2. Mañana Borneo Resort, Sabah Joining Ulu Muda on the path less travelled is this bare bones resort in the village of Kampung Pituru Laut. Situated an hour away by car from Kota Belud, it cuts you off from the outside world with its complete lack of phone or Wi-Fi reception, which is perfect if all you want is to regroup, relax and rejuvenate. Sit back with a good read in a hammock and drift off to a blissful afternoon nap, or get moving with a little kayaking action on the turquoise blue seas. If you’re not the type to just sit still, there’s a dive shop conveniently located next to the resort, where you can follow a dive instructor down to see colourful corals and friendly fish. 3. Qing Xin Ling Leisure and Cultural Village, Perak One of the good things that has risen from Ipoh’s newly rekindled tourist scene is this blast from the past retreat, which opened its doors in July 2014. Located just 5km away from the fast developing city, it’s highly accessible and a pleasant surprise for tired city dwellers who want a change of scenery. The moment you step into the front gate, you are transported to a different world, as 70s Mandopop tunes start ticking your earbuds and ancient Chinese villages and stalls come into view. The highlight, however, lies in the scenic pond sitting at the bottom of the limestone hill, where you can see the view from the ground up reflected detail-fordetail in the water. 4. Kapas Island, Terengganu There’s no shortage of islands in Terengganu, but if you’ve already visited Redang and Perhentian, here’s another one to check off your list. Being much, much smaller – 2km long to be exact – it has managed to evade the dreaded curse of commercialisation, mostly because smaller land means less area for accommodation. You can indulge in all the usual island hopping activities like snorkelling, diving and sunbathing here, and sink your toes into the pure white sand, after which the island is named (Kapas means cotton in Malay) – the perfect recipe for total relaxation. There are also a few routes you can take for some light jungle trekking. Where to stay: Qimi Chalet Contact: 019-648 1714 qimichalet@yahoo.com

5. Turtle Islands National Park, Sabah Rated No. 2 out of 29 things to do in Sandakan, Sabah by Tripadvisor users, you can’t go wrong with this turtlethemed attraction. The park is nestled within the Turtle Islands, Selingaan, Bakkungan Kechil and Gulisan, and is notable for its green and hawksbill turtles. Watching turtles lay eggs and seeing baby turtles hatch is definitely an experience not to be missed, and this park is your best bet to getting it. To see them, one will have to book an overnight stay at one of the chalets that occupy Selingan Island, and as turtles here emerge from the sea every night, you don’t need to worry about going there during the ‘right’ season, although October is usually the time when high turtle traffic is expected. Where to stay: Accommodation in the chalets is usually covered in the tour packages, which is the most popular choice for travellers. Turtle Island Borneo (www. turtleislandborneo.com) is a good place to start, as it has plenty of information on tour packages and contacts of reliable agencies. 6. Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, Kedah There is more to Langkawi than eagle statues and parks filled with local folklore; it is also home to this majestic Geoforest Park, whose signature is its landscape of lofty limestone karstic hills. Within the park, you can take a boat ride down the winding alleys of the mangrove forest, where you might be able to spot a monkey swinging from a tree or a crocodile beneath the river. Better yet, you’ll be able to see eagles up close and personal during the eagle feeding segment of the tour, where the birds swoop down to eat chicken skin pieces thrown into the water by the guide. Where to stay: Malibest Resort Contact: 04-9558 202 / 04-9558 222 reservation@malibestresort.com

7. Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, Pahang Unbeknownst to most Malaysians, a pachyderm paradise lies only two hours away by car from Kuala Lumpur. A far better experience than watching elephants behind the confines of cages, the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary gives visitors the rare opportunity to interact with and touch the gentle mammals. If you’re ready to get down and dirty, you can even go down to the river to give them a wash. The centre also serves as an educational hub to raise awareness about elephants, and while admission fee is free (nope, we’re not kidding!), visitors are encouraged to make a donation to keep the non-profit organisation going. Where to stay: Tours to the sanctuary usually begin with a hotel in central Kuala Lumpur as the pickup point, which you can arrange for at Whoa Adventures (www. whoaadventures.com) Contact: whoa_me@whoaadventures.com

8. Tabin Wildlife Resort, Sabah First accorded the status of Wildlife Reserve in 1984, this resort is where you will find some of the most highly endangered animals in the world, such as the Borneo Pygmy Elephant and Sumatran Rhinoceros. Visitors can surround themselves with all that Malaysian biodiversity has to offer by partaking in activities provided by the accommodation, such as jungle-trekking, night safari, wildlife-spotting and bird-watching. The joys of Tabin Wildlife Reserve do not stop there as the official website offers a wide selection of tour packages that extend to the whole of Borneo, such as riding a helicopter from Sandakan to Lahad Datu to paddling around islands in the South China Sea. Where to stay: At the resort Contact: 088-267 266 enquiry@tabinwildlife.com.my

shoes for a vision

JANUARY 2016

The Terri-Fiq

Entrepreneur From TVC personality to an esteemed shoe entrepreneur, Fiqa Liyana Chong has impressively transcended herself beyond the portrait of “another pretty face to an accomplished lady as she initiated her venture into foldable footwear.

W

hile you might recognise this alluring face from nationally syndicated TV commercials, you may not know that Fiqa Liyana Chong is also armed with the fervour of entrepreneurship and has been making giant strides in her own line of footwear, FIQS. A lady of grandiose ambitions, Fiqa is now relentlessly pursuing her dream of building an international footwear brand right from the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Since its inception, FIQS has been making significant progress especially since its expansion to Hong Kong. We turn to Fiqa as she spills the beans on her start-up.

46

| CAMPUS PLUS

C+: Thank you for having a career chat with us, Fiqa. First off, please tell us more about your very own line of footwear, FIQS. F: My pleasure. FIQS is a foldable footwear exclusively handmade for ladies who are always on the go and relish travelling to new places. It’s all about being fun and energetic, hence the first batch of our collection is made up of vibrant and striking colours. The business kick-started while I was still a student in Upper Iowa University. C+: How did you get your idea or concept for starting up FIQS? F: As a commercial talent, my job naturally demands me to constantly be on my feet all day. From filming on set to attending events, there’s rarely a day that would pass by without me donning a pair of high heels. Coupled with my hectic schedules and the fact that I am always on the go, it can be quite a pain to walk around in heels for an extended period of time. Of course, the least glamorous part is when the aching sinks in. In the past, I used to shamelessly haul slippers in my handbag but inconvenient factor aside, I also don’t look presentable whenever I need to swap to slippers. Let’s be honest, the combination of a neat ensemble with slippers is really not something to shout about. That’s when I thought to myself hey, why not create my own foldable shoes that are compact and yet comfortable at the same time? I went all out with the idea and that’s how FIQS was conceived. Now, it is possible for ladies like us to gracefully swap shoes and grant our feet the much-needed rest before flaunting those killer stilettoes again.

C+: As FIQS shoes are uniquely handcrafted, can you walk us through the design process? F: At the beginning of every process, I would always throw in a good amount of time in order to come up with the sketches. Once I am through with that, I typically visit several leather markets in order to scout for the perfect material and the next step will be to send in everything for the first prototype. After several rounds of amendments to further improve on the details, I will finally give the green light for production to begin. Instead of using machines, each of FIQS’ shoe is carefully sewn by the hand of our artisans. C+: As an entrepreneur and a prolific TVC talent, how do you manage to juggle everything (are you a superwoman)? F: Time management is the key. Every night before I hit the sack, I will always meticulously plan and lay out my schedule for the upcoming day; what I should do, where and when would my meetings take place. By planning them accordingly, I get to set my priorities right. Time is precious to me and it is truly something that I hold on to dearly. With time, once it’s gone, it’s gone. It’s irreversible and the time wasted will never come back. Hence, whenever I plan my schedule, I always make sure I stick to it. Of course, there are times where I may get distracted. In order to give myself a little bit of leeway, I also set a time limit for each of the tasks in my schedule. C+: As a budding young entrepreneur in Malaysia, what are the challenges you have faced so far? F: Knowing that it’s not a plain sailing journey, I am always prepared to be bombarded with

challenges. However, perhaps one of the trickiest hurdles that I’ve encountered so far is the challenge in assembling the right team to run FIQS. Working in a startup venture is certainly not a piece of cake. One has to possess not just a multitude of skills but also most importantly, the right attitude and passion in order to go far in this industry. Having to work in a fast-paced environment that demands multi-tasking is one that is inevitably stressful but with the right mind-set, it can be very rewarding. In this sense, it’s a little tough to lock down talents who are up for such thrilling challenges. C+: What’s next on your agenda with FIQS for the year 2016? F: We’re looking forward to expand FIQS (woot woot). As of now, we have already enlisted three new marketplaces around other Asian countries. We are also in the midst of launching a myriad of new designs for FIQS’ footwear. C+: On a lighter note, what’s your vice? F: Shoes! I can never get enough of them. C+: If you had one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be? F: Set your goals in a timeline. This way, you would know when you will achieve them. Do everything one step at a time and trust me, you’ll get there. After all, every pro was once a beginner, the point is to just do it and you will learn as you grow. Also, always stay humble!

Noragami ARAGOTO

anime by ivy chin

Unknown Power

The Supernatural Realm Let’s skip the New Year greetings and go straight to the anime you should watch to start the year! Ok you can’t deny you’re getting a lil’ older, but that doesn’t mean you should stop watching anime! The little anime world in your heart will never die and will accompany you forever (hopefully!). So which anime should we watch to kickstart 2016 with a bang? You can probably guess the genre of the anime based on the title, excited yet?

Noragami ARAGOTO

After a year and a half, Noragami finally returns with a second season! If you have watched the first season of Noragami, then you would know it’s a story of various Gods in modern day Japan and their dealings with ayakashi, a large group of emotional fragments capable of possessing humans. But in Noragami ARAGOTO, the God of calamity, Yato will no longer be the main focus. Conversely and interestingly, the show will be exploring the dark past of the God of war, Bishamon as well as her conflicts with Yato. We can’t wait to learn more about the various shinkis, which are the weapons created with spirits she owns.

Owarimonogatari

We have lost count of the number of Monogatari seasons! Still, none of the Monogatari series have failed to impress us. As things continue to get more and more interesting, we can’t help but keep watching to find out what exactly has happened to every single character. As for Owarimonogatari, it looks like we are will be focusing more on the enigmatic character, Oshino Ougi, that turns lead charater, Araragi Koyomi’s high school life upside down. After discovering and revealing a tale that wasn’t meant to be told, this will bring to light to “what” makes Araragi Koyomi and reveals the “beginning” of everything.

Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou

Imagine if fantasy was real. Such is the world of Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou, a Japan of the 1960s, where all superhumans ever written about in fictional stories existed at the same time. Aliens, phantoms, goblins, titans, cyborgs, magical girls as well as the foes they fight and any creature you could possibly imagine, all coexisting. The question is, will they be able to coexist peacefully? What would the Japanese government do to bring order to this chaos?

Owarimonogatari

Owari no Seraph 2nd Season

The first season left us hanging by ending it right after Hyakuya Yuuichirou met with his fellow orphan, Hyakuya Mikaela and awaken his power. The second season returns by continuing right where the story left off. Yuuichirou, who joins the Japanese Imperial Demon Army has decided to save his only family, Mikaela, who is now a vampire, by going on a search for ways to turn him back to human. At the same time, Mikaela is also trying to stop Yuuichirou from being consumed by his quest of vengeance. Things are getting complicated and we don’t even know if the vampires are truly the antagonist now.

Behold, the happiest job in the world: Panda Nanny

Armed and Dangerous: Killer Dolphins

Forget the depiction of playful and adorable dolphins as canines aren’t the only animals who can land jobs in the military. Yes, for years the U.S. Navy has trained bottlenose dolphins to carry out a range of military tasks, from locating underwater mines to flagging the presence of enemy swimmers for harbour defense. Apparently, the sea mammals make attractive military assets all thanks to their intelligence and trainability.

Yes, quit your day job right now because China is looking for panda nannies. Dubbed as the “best job” in the world, being a panda caretaker at the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Centre is certainly a dream job that most of us never knew existed. The overall job requirement entails hanging out with adorable panda cubs, loving them and cuddling these little babies to death. Of course, panda nannies don’t just sit around playing with little pandas all day, they are also expected to feed and clean them – generally making sure they are safe and well for all 365 days throughout a year.

fact: Applications are open at fun.sohu.com for those who’re 22 years old or older, possess writing and photography skills as well as some basic knowledge of pandas (they are black and white, cute, cuddly and they eat bamboo - does that count?). You’ll get paid $32,500 (RM138,320) and to sweeten the deal, other basic necessities (food, transportation and accommodation) are also included.

fact: 36 armed dolphins trained by the U.S. Navy to kill terrorists have been missing since 2005. The dolphins carry “toxic dart guns” capable of killing a man in a single shot.

A Real Life Sleeping Beauty Touted as a real-life “Sleeping Beauty”, Beth Goodier with a rare syndrome of Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) has unfortunately been trapped in the grimmest fairytale of all. The condition causes Goodier to doze off for up to 22 hours a day leaving her to stay awake for only two hours a day up to five times a week. Can you picture going through life either sleeping or feeling like you’re sleep walking? While Sleeping Beauty was woken by a prince’s kiss, Gooldier knows her own story is unlikely to have a happy ending. Having to sleep through every conceivable occasion in life (graduation, holidays, birthdays, New Year’s Eves, Christmas and you name it), the 20-year old feels as though the disorder is stealing away her youth. A far cry from the classic fairy tale, the easiest part of the condition is perhaps the sleeping as other side-effects of an episode would also trigger her to behave in a child-like behaviour coupled with states of derealisation, among other cognitive impairments.

| CAMPUS PLUS

fact: KLS is a rare and complex neurological disorder that only 1,000 unfortunate souls in the world are thought to suffer from. The mysterious condition devastatingly begins in adolescence and causes disruptive behavioural changes. To date, there is no known cure but the condition typically burns out after a number of years and on average it goes on for about 13 years.

Huawei Honor 7

January 2016

The Magnificent 7 Honor 7

GOLD

JANUARY 2016

Honor, the budget-inclined sub-brand of Huawei has gone against the grain and released an affordable yet ‘premium’ smartphone that comes with a spec list which easily puts rival flagship devices to shame. We give you the lowdown on its seven most outstanding features. JANUARY 2016

Design

Camera

Smart Key

Metal has never looked better whilst remaining affordable. The Honor 7 sports an all-metal housing with an airbrushed ceramic coating which lends the device premium look, giving off an air of elegance. Rounded edges and curved sides make it fit comfortably in the hand, and the phone’s size plus the well-thought out location of major buttons is just right for onehanded operation.

A wonderful 20MP lens is at your disposal via the Honor 7’s main camera while the front offers 8MP and soft light flash for perfectlylit selfies. For your enjoyment is an arsenal of software options that make picture taking a fun experience – the standout modes that we really liked were the Good Food and Light Painting. Good Food mode produced magazine worthy food shots with plenty of ‘bokeh’ effects while the Light Painting mode lets you light paint in the dark and blurs moving lights. The Honor 7 also has the ability to capture Full HD videos, and the quality of both video and photo is excellent.

This little button on the left edge of the phone acts as a user-configurable hardware key which allows you to set the button as a shortcut for launching your favourite app, camera or any other action you want. If you’re not fond of using the fingerprint scanner, this is your other go-to customisable Quick Start button.

Display Display-wise, it’s a treat for the eyes. Coming in at a generous 5.2 inches, the IPS LCD screen has Full HD resolution at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels so colour reproduction, brightness and details come across well even at different viewing angles.

Performance It’s powered by the manufacturer’s in-house HiSilicon octa-core Kirin 935 processor clocked at 2.2GHz and 3GB of RAM. We were apprehensive at first of how capable it is, but after running a couple of graphic-intensive game and opening multiple big files, we must say we’re impressed. Performance is smooth, fast and efficient, app launch and loading times were quick and we experienced no lag in any of the games we played.

54

| CAMPUS PLUS

Fingerprint Recognition This is one cool feature, especially with a scanner that’s that accurate. Setup and registration of your digits (up to five, mind you) is fast and easy, and once that’s done, you can just unlock the phone by placing your finger on the scanner pad beneath the main camera. Digit recognition is lightningfast and is not just used for unlocking the phone. It can also be used to receive incoming calls, shoot photos or record videos, slide the notification bar down or up among other customisable functions.

Battery Life With an impressive 3,100 mAh battery and three power saving modes, the staying power of the phone is great even with heavy usage. On top of that, the tab also comes with a Power Monitoring option, which runs a diagnostic test and offers optimised ways to save on juice. At RM1399, the Honor 7 is a steal, considering the feature-laden specs complemented by its edgy design and finish. A Great Mini FUJIFILM instax mini 70

GOLD

JANUARY 2016

Despite living in this day and age where digital cameras are king, there’s still a demand for the tactile feel that a physical photograph delivers. It’s one of the reasons that instant film is still a favourite among Millennials. Certainly, instant cameras are a joy to use, but they’re not always JANUARY 2016 too great for selfies. Realising this, FUJIFILM decided to address this flaw and update their instax series of cameras. The latest member of this family comes in the form of the instax mini 70. Design The camera is debuted as a step up camera from its predecessor and has a sleek and more streamlined look, overall being more solid and compact while retaining the original design of the brand we’ve come to know and love. As its name suggests, the mini 70 supports FUJIFILM’s instax mini film, so the printouts are rather small. On the bright side, they are pocketable, allowing you to simply slot them into your wallets or purses for safekeeping. The camera comes in three different colours – Moon White, Canary Yellow, and Island Blue.

Features In terms of features, it stands out against other instant cameras by having a small mirror at the front. As you would have guessed, this mirror is used to frame selfies! Of course, there’s also a selfie mode, which automatically sets the camera to reduce its focal length and ensure optimal exposure of the subject(s). The shutter button is also placed at the front of the camera to better facilitate the taking of selfies.

Apart from that, the mini 70 also comes with several other shooting modes. This includes Macro; Landscape; Fill-in Flash; Hi-Key and Timer. Fill-in Flash is essentially used to get rid of shadows on your subject under harsh lighting, while Hi-Key is used to force the camera to shoot with slightly overexposed settings. This essentially means you’ll be getting very bright photos with the Hi-Key mode. Using the mini 70 is an incredibly easy affair. Just load the film into the camera, choose the mode you want, and snap your picture. You’ll want to be careful when shooting in macro mode though, as this camera does not have a pentaprism. What you see in the viewfinder isn’t what the lens picks up when shooting subjects that are closer than approximately 8 cm.

Image Quality In terms of image quality, the mini 70 performs pretty much the same as all instax mini cameras. The colours are slightly punchy, with a good amount of contrast. Pictures taken in low-light also turn out decent, thanks to the built-in flash,

which is capable of illuminating subject up to 2.7 metres away.

Conclusion To sum it up, the mini 70 is much like any other FUJIFILM instax mini camera. It does come in pretty cool colours and the selfie mode is perfect for when you need a keepsake at a party. Overall, the mini 70 is a good camera, though the placement of the shutter button does feel weird when you’re taking photos that aren’t selfies. If you’re looking for an instax mini camera and you love selfies though, this is definitely the camera for you.

softcore molten cake co

january 2016

S

tarting with the delicate scent of fresh flowers, passing by a round rustic table that replicates the ideal of a weathered antique and continuing to the heavenly burst of molten cakes, almost everything that tickles your senses (yes, sight, touch and smell) in Softcore Molten Cake Co is deliberately crafted from scratch and fervour. Helmed by a squad of young and enthusiastic friends (Chefs Tommy, Gerald and Sham), Softcore delivers not only just what its name suggests (an intriguing lineup of lava cakes with molten centres), but also classic comfort food to satisfy growling tummies. Despite being smack dab in the middle of Bandar Sunway’s sprouting crops of cafes, Softcore still stands out with its minimalist interior and glass affair. Perhaps what truly sets Softcore apart from other cafes is their resolute seriousness when it comes to food. Leaving nothing to chance, (almost) every ingredient on their menu is homemade (from the ice cream, wafer, tartar sauce down to the popcorns and even the fittings of the café!). Forget about gimmicks and fancy dishes, at Softcore it’s all about refining simple comfort food. The food menu may be limited (for now), but it’s an appealing assortment: the grilled cheese sandwich make strides with savoury fillings like Asian Chicken (RM19) and beef brisket (RM21); there’s also truffle fries topped with Grana Padano cheese (RM16), crunchy fish and chips (RM18) and even a delectable take on an eight-hour braised lamb stew (RM32) paired off with a good ol’ 1homemade mash potatoes.

After devouring a slab of lamb, be sure to not miss out Softcore’s distinctive Salted Caramel Lava Cake that is priced at RM15. Needless to say, the explosive salted caramel filling takes this French favourite to another level. Made out of pure couverture chocolate, the cake itself is drenched in butterscotch in the company of crunchy edible dirt (a sophisticated technique in molecular gastronomy that produces sand crumbles out of crystalised dark chocolate and caramelised peanuts bits – not to be mistaken with dusts of milo), popcorn for added texture, blueberries for a tinge of acidity and a scoop of vanilla ice cream (all of which are homemade, yes even the popcorn). Another must-have is the Matcha Lava Cake (tagged at RM15) – even if you’re not a big fan of green tea. A few dainty details take the spotlight away from the actual cake. There’s the candied calamansi, red bean paste, refreshing green tea sauce and sesame biscuit (again, all homemade!) that are a sweet snack all on their own but amid the toppings, the white chocolate based cake stands-out when consumed with all its accompaniments. Prod the tiny tower with your fork and you’ll discover that this one is just oozing with concentrated green tea lava. Coupled with the combination of candied calamansi, the unusual match surprisingly complements each other seamlessly. Giving the ubiquitous cake their own spin-off, Tommy also dished out his experimental cake (soon to be on menu, we hope), the Chili Chocolate Cake served with a heavenly scoop of vanilla ice-cream. On the outside, it looks like any scrumptious chocolate cake, but the centre is a thick chocolate batter infused with loads of cili padi in butter that makes the molten cake a luscious affair. The next time you are there, ask the crew for their Chili Chocolate Cake and be prepared for a lil’ kick. While Softcore’s picturesque minimalist interior may reflect the template of today’s caffeine-dosed cafes, the founders insist in concentrating on their line of robust premium teas from HOJO (rm14 per pot). There are also cold brew coffee (RM15) and milkshakes (RM15), a standout of which is the santan red bean milkshake, as well as complimentary cucumber-citrus water. If you’re a fan of Snickers, you have an added reason to drop by Softcore (hint: they are in the midst of cooking up a new recipe of salted caramel, peanut butter and chocolate milkshake). Operating hours: Mon-Fri: 1130am-11pm Sat-Sun: 1130am-4pm, 6pm-11pm Address: Softcore Molten Cake Co 56, Jalan PJS 11/7, Bandar Sunway, Selangor Stalk them at: facebook.com/gooeynes instagram.com/my_softcore

AIESEC,

the global leading provider of personal and professional development experiences for young people worldwide launched YouthSpeak, a global youth insight survey aimed to better understand millennials. Millennials are rapidly filling positions in the working world and will make up to 75% of the global workforce. They are already becoming the most influential generation as their purchasing power is larger than previous generations. Most of the researches on millennials have often been focused on the Western world, so we want to provide a global perspective on this generation. The first survey is aimed at understanding what millennials think on how to improve education and employment as this is essential to the development of a young individual. Millennials are struggling to better connect their formal education with their future employment, and our mission is to inspire action through information and educate leaders on the key challenges and issues that millennials face today in achieving their fullest potential.

Our Goals: • Youth opinions from 125 countries and territories represented in the YouthSpeak survey. • 5000 respondents starting from October 2013 to May 2014. • Engage societal, education and business leaders with comprehensive data and youth insights on education and employment. • Inspire young people to speak up on issues they care about in achieving their potential and educate their communities. • Inform and shape the future of AIESEC’s programmes and key volunteer and professional projects moving towards the AIESEC 2020 strategic direction. • Help shape the global youth voice in providing collective information at key events and stakeholder groups such as the United Nations. • Collaborate with similar youth initiatives to propel youth development and millennial insights. The YouthSpeak 2013 survey on millenials covered 25,000 respondents in 100 countries, and these are the statistics: • Entrepreneurs are identified as the key role models for millennials. • Passion is recognised as the most desired trait in leaders.

“AIESEC in Malaysia is

striving to officiate itself as the congregate ambassador of a new generation of Malaysian youth. As this representative, we convey messages of passion and commitment as a foundation for cooperation with private and public sectors alike; bridging generational divides that stagnate the growth potential development of Malaysian society. We aspire to connect cohorts of Malaysian youth from across cultural, ethnic, religious, and social divides by seeking common ground in understanding and uniting behind nation building. Our methods do not discriminate, and we open opportunities to engage with our leadership development model across geographic bounds. What we ask for is simple; for youth to share their thoughts and opinions about what matters to them. Complacent apathy is easy; taking the personal authority to speak up is the first spark necessary to making an impact. We give young people access

to be taking that first step.

President of AIESEC in Malaysia,

Hanne Ockert-Axelsson

• 80.5% stated that a company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) affects their interest in working at a company. • 68% stated that a company’s CSR affects their decisions in buying their products. • Quality of education and corruption are the top two issues that millennials care about. • To make a greater impact on the world, millennials stated that “getting to know more about themselves and what they stand for” as most important.

• Lack of understanding, information and awareness are the aspects impeding millennials from acting upon what they are passionate about. AIESEC is also partnering with business, non-governmental, education institutions, civic organisations and the media community in order to reach youth audiences and raise awareness on improving issues surrounding education and employment.

Express your Thoughts The YouthSpeak survey allows youths aged 16 to 30 around the world to express their thoughts and opinions. The data was analysed based on pre-determined parameters followed by a presentation on the insights and findings at the YouthSpeak Forum. The completed report was passed on to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), one of the key partners of the YouthSpeak survey where it was further presented to the key ministers from Asian countries earlier in May. The nine-minute survey started on the 10th October last year and ended on 30th March this year.

“Being a young person, we possess high

energy levels and the passion of making change happen

to shape the community towards a better future. The real question lies on how could we better channel our energy into making relevant change or impact? Real impact happens when we are solving issues that are significant to society. To actually make that happen, we always need to be aware of our society and their different walks of life. The corporates, educators, or even the entrepreneurs all impart knowledge and different perspectives, which are indispensable and can influence us to make relevant changes. By taking ourselves out of our little circle of friends and our comfort zone, I believe that will help enrich our minds through the wisdom of many. That is why in YouthSpeak Forum 2016, we aspire to expose young people in Malaysia to industry leaders through engagement and learning. With companies such as Unilever and Shell participating, this forum could be the ideal platform for you to understand the true value of impact from an external perspective.

Vice President of Business Development 2015/2016, AIESEC in Malaysia,

Kenny Sim

“Living in part of the world means we have the responsibility to make the world a better place.

Malaysian youth often complain about what makes them dissatisfied but only a few are courageous enough to take action. It is well documented that Malaysia is lacking dynamic youth who really care about local issues, which could improve Malaysia in the best way possible. Understanding and speaking up is the first step towards change and that is why YouthSpeak is providing such a platform for youth in Malaysia to voice out what they actually want for the future. We are looking forward to present and submit the final YouthSpeak Malaysia report to the Malaysian decision makers or agencies, and the only way we can bring about a huge influence, is when the youth speaks up!

Project Director of YouthSpeak Movement in Malaysia,

Sarah Shi Ming

Our Objectives Themed #youthspeak: ForwardMalaysia, the one-day forum aimed at gathering 1000 students from across the country to provide an avenue for participants to discuss and debate on the possible ways to encourage young people to actively contribute and engage in world issues. The forum aims to bring top young leaders of various background and experts for a conversation around pressing global issues with the aim to generate new, actionable ideas that will impact the world and its future.

LOOKING UP AND FOWARD

JANUARY 2016

What would you like to see happen for yourself in 2016? Say ‘new year’ and most people will immediately think of a clean, blank slate. Something about entering a fresh batch of 365/366 days empowers people, however momentarily, to try harder to take charge of their life’s direction. Thinking about giving your CGPA one last push before the final year of degree ends? Or daydreaming about a long needed vacation to some place exotic? There is never a better time than the present, especially when a new year rolls around. Curious about what your peers have in store for 2016? We spoke to four bright students from UTAR Sungai Long, and they shared with us the things they hope to realise in the next 12 months.

“I think 2016 will be a very good year as it’s an even number, and I feel luckier in the years that are even numbers. As a student, what I want is to maintain and increase my CGPA. Also, now I’m preparing and planning for a big cultural event here in UTAR, which will be in July 2016. I hope to get a nice internship placement too, because I’m going for it at the end of this year.”

“As I’m now one of the members of the student council, after this term I’d like to go for a vacation with my team. I’d want to relax and go for a study exchange programme or study tour with my friends, then I can go explore new cultures. I’d also like to go for a ‘Big Four’ company for my accounting internship, which can empower my career development.”

“I’m hoping a physiotherapy event that I’m chairing this year, which is an appreciation dinner for all the physiotherapy students, will be a success, so that I’ll have a good memory of something that I chaired before I go off for my hospital posting. Hopefully, I can plan a getaway as well as I like to travel. I also hope to see myself become a more confident person as a whole.”

“I’m kind of a shy person, so I hope to gain more confidence this year. I’ve taken up a new musical instrument, so hopefully I can improve my skills there. I’m also planning to go for a study tour in the mid of May, so I hope to gain some experience from there and explore a different country.”
