Let’s not forget one of the most important things for the month of May – it’s Mother’s Day! Naggy, cool, awesome, or wise, mothers come in many different shapes and sizes. Regardless of how she looks like though, you mother is truly someone deserving of your love. After all, she did carry you in her belly for nine months, and change your diapers till you were old enough to understand how to use the toilet. On another note, there was a mistake in the previous issue where we accidentally placed the wrong text for the article about Sunsilk organising a Selfie Movie. Raffles’ Budding Designers Begin Career

with Grand Showcase

Aptly titled ‘Begin’, Raffles College of Higher Education’s 33rd Graduation Showcase gave its Fashion Design students quite the platform at the Grand Ballroom of the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. 20 students capped off their two-and-a-half years’ worth of studies with ambitious five-piece collections, each with a highly individual creative vision. By the end of the night, the judges had their work cut out for them. The place of second runner up went to Nabil Volkers and his collection, ‘Disturbed’. His was populated with designs inspired by a dark chapter of his life, and incorporated elements from his struggle with depression, anger and insecurities. Serene Foo and her collection, ‘Replicated Reflection’ won first runner up. Her colourful and multi-textured designs got their inspiration from a simple yet unexpected place: the reflections of the city in the scattered puddles on the streets. The distinction of first place went to Michelle Lau Hui Yi and her collection ‘Ivy’, which featured impeccably tailored menswear pieces with daring details. The wearability and minimalist styling of the garments left a deep impression on not just the judges, but the crowd as well.

ACCA Ups Its Game Global accountancy body ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is all set to provide ambitious individuals everywhere with highquality education through its latest online learning venture, ACCA-X. Following the launch of its online platform on the 13th of April, all of ACCA-X’s courses are now made available to the public on the world-renowned edX platform (an online learning station founded by MIT and Harvard). Epigeum (a spin-out company from Imperial College London) also participated in the collaboration by contributing high-quality feature content for the courses. As an effort to boost up financial literacy skills, ACCA-X has unveiled its first two free courses, which are Introduction to Financial and Management Accounting, and Intermediate Financial and Management Accounting. “We believe that ACCA-X will attract a diverse range of talent to the profession and broaden access to learning and allow more learners than ever before to gain valuable financial literacy skills and prepare for the ACCA Qualification,” said ACCA’s Chief Executive, Helen Brand. Anyone who is interested to obtain the skills and qualifications to a rewarding career can enroll online for free at www.acca-x.com. Join Durex in Sex Education Efforts Recently, Durex Malaysia’s #SomebodyLikeMe Choose2Protect campaign - which connects undergraduates with their peers to educate youths about sexual and reproductive health (SRH), received another boost with the participation of two new universities. Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman Perak campus (UTAR) and Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (UPM) have come onboard as project partners, a move which will help the campaign to reach out to more young Malaysians, especially those in rural or suburban areas where sexual education is less accessible. So far, UTAR and UPM have already recruited 90 undergraduates from eight universities to facilitate awareness sessions throughout 2015, with the help of AIESEC. Marketing Manager for Durex Malaysia and Singapore, Karin Chan said, “By involving youth in the advocacy efforts and to run their own programmes, the campaign creates a greater impact on students by breaking down communication barriers among peers on the topic which is largely perceived as embarrassing.” With 50,000 students reached out to worldwide by 190 peer educators since 2013, it’s clear that the campaign is on a winning streak.

Studying Accounting at Sunway College Just Got Easier As part of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Sunway College has once again established itself as a leader in providing education opportunities. A total of 23 deserving students from 16 various schools across Malaysia received the Sunway TES-ICAEW Global Accountant Scholarship at a presentation ceremony recently. The scholarships, totalling RM1 million, will enable recipients to study in the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) programme at Sunway TES. The scholarship covers full tuition fees and registration fees. Sunway University and Sunway Education’s Senior Executive Director, Dr Elizabeth Lee was at the event to present the scholarships. Sunway TES initially launched the scholarship scheme in 2013 with only two recipients. As of last year, the total number of scholarship recipients increased to 84 students. To be eligible for the award, recipients are required to obtain at least 9As in their SPM exams with a passing rate of 90% and above.

Congratulations to All Curtin Sarawak Graduates 18th April was a day filled with happiness, as over 600 students of Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) graduated during the university’s annual graduation ceremony. 275 undergraduate students of the Faculty of Business and Humanities, 27 postgraduates students from Master of Accounting, Master of Science (Project Management) and Graduate Certificate in Project Management programmes, 225 undergraduates students of the Faculty of Engineering and Science and eight postgraduates students from its Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes also graduated on the day. A separate graduation ceremony was also held for their diploma programmes students, with a total of 103 students graduating from the Diploma of Business, Diploma of Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety, and Diploma of Process Plant Technology programmes, which are offered in collaboration with Australia’s Federation Training. Curtin Sarawak was delighted and proud of their students’ excellent academic achievements, outstanding extracurricular activities as well as their community service contributions. In addition, Curtin Sarawak will continue to provide a world class learning experience for its students by utilising the latest learning technologies and strong student learning support mechanisms.

Printing The Way to Success Canon Marketing Malaysia and KDU University College last month signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to seal a five-year Academic Initiative Partnership between the two parties. The signing was done with Canon Marketing Malaysia’s President and CEO, Wataru Nishioka, and KDU University College’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Khong Yoon Loong. Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Education II, Yang Berhormat P. Kamalanathan P. Panchanathan, Paramount Education Group’s CEO Yang Berbahagia Datin Teh Geok Lian, and Paramount Corporation Berhad’s CEO, Jeffrey Chew. With this MoU in place, KDU’s Utropolis Glenmarie Campus will be equipped with Canon’s copiers, as well as large format printers. There’s also a ‘Canon UniPrint’ shop, where the students can benefit from the convenience of one-stop printing solutions and experience wireless photo printing solutions. In addition, an education fund was also announced, which was established to provide loans to KDU students in need of financial aid.

Calling All Talented Secondary School Writers! Missed out on the first Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition? Fear not, it’s back and they’re calling all secondary school students using the Malaysian education syllabus to submit essays online from 11th April to 10th May 2015. Under Sunway English Language Development Programme, this competition aims to improve the standard of education in Malaysian schools, especially English proficiency among students. In a recent survey conducted by the Gamblers Rehab Centre Malaysia on 5,000 secondary students, 89% of them admitted to being exposed to gambling. Thus, this year’s competition will be introducing the topic of gambling to explore the views of students, particularly touching on its cons. There are two categories to the competition, which are Category A for students in Form 1 to Form 3 and Category B for students in Form 4 and Form 5. Category A’s participants are required to write a 350-word essay on the effects of gambling, while Category B’s participants are required to write about 650 words on why people should quit gambling. Furthermore, the first prize winners of both categories will stand a chance to win a cash prize of RM5,000 and a Sunway Bursary worth RM20,000 each. While for the second prize winners of both categories, they will receive RM3,000 cash and a Sunway bursary valued at RM15,000. The third prize winners of both categories will also receive RM1,000 cash and an RM10,000 Sunway Bursary. Moreover, each category will have 10 consolation prizes, comprising a cash prize of RM500 and Sunway bursary of RM5,000. Submit your essays online now through www. sunway.edu.my/essay. Malaysia’s Next Top Designers Kudos to Wong Kail Li and Lim Yong An! Thanks to their efforts at the Nippon Paint Young Designer Award (NPYDA) 2014, Malaysians are now ranked amongst Asia’s top young architects and interior designers. In the competition, individuals from seven other participating countries such as Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan and Hong Kong were involved. Among all the competitors, the two were crowned as the Gold Winners of NPYDA. The NPYDA 2014 competition featured two categories – Architecture and Interior Design. With a total of 2,303 submissions, entries were evaluated based on colour concept, green and sustainable design, design concept statement and design innovation. Wong, from University Putra Malaysia managed to bag the Gold Award under the Architecture Category. Her winning design, titled “Bond the Vicinity–Hydrophilic Retirement Retreat” is one that encourages the elderly to interact amongst themselves and the public through a green environment. Alongside Wong, Malaysia was also represented by Lim from KBU International College. He was declared as the Gold Award winner for the Interior Design Category. His LEAF (Lifestyle, Easy, Advanced, Fun) Agricultural Nursery, offers a unique and sustainable F&B environment where people can enjoy fresh produce that were harvested using organic waste as compost. BAC: The Best Brand in Legal Education

Brickfields Asia College (BAC) has received the prominent BrandLaureate Best Brand Award in legal education for the third consecutive year. Life in the Fast Lane

The annual Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix was held last month and we had the opportunity to speak to team Mercedes AMG driver, Nico Rosberg during a meet-and-greet session with local engineering students. Organised by Petronas, the event was held in the company’s headquarters in KLCC. Naturally, the first question that Nico was asked was how exactly does one become an F1 driver. He explained that the first step is to start go-karting. Even at the go-kart level, there are championships and the best way to get yourself noticed is to win a couple of go-kart championships. If you’re talented, sponsors will come to you and that’ll be the next step to becoming a Formula 1 driver. As for the type of training he has to go through and what his focus in life is currently on, he answered that his training mainly involves being physically fit, because the seatbelt and his helmet are both very tight. If he’s unfit, the chances of sustaining some serious injuries are made higher. As for his focus in life currently, it’s his family – he and his wife are expecting a baby in August. They’ve also got a Labrador puppy at home. Of course, his racing career is also something he’s focused on right now. When asked what his advice for prospective F1 drivers were, he said that studies help a lot. Knowledge of Physics, for example, can help a lot in the setting up and tuning of an F1 car.

Sanctband Shows Students How To Elasticise Exercise Routines Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus was recently paid a visit by Sanctuary Health, who was there to promote its latest product - Sanctband. What might look like simple, colourful elastic bands are actually high quality latex-resistive exercise bands that assist in resistance training and physical rehabilitation. In other words, they help build up your strength and bring your fitness up to an optimum level if you have previously suffered an injury. Being an innovative product, it’s a no-brainer that youths would take to it more readily, and with that in mind the brand was brought to the campus. The promotional event was also held to spark the trend of living healthily, and to spread the word about Sanctband through the tight-knit social networks of students. To achieve this purpose, live demonstrations and fun mini-games were held throughout the day, with help from specially enlisted trainer Shashi. Together with three female promoters, Shashi showcased various ways to achieve a comprehensive workout routine with Sanctband. At the same time, Sanctbands were also sold at the event in all four colours, namely pink, orange, purple and blue. Each colour represents a different strength and tension level, with pink being the lightest and blue being the heaviest. 16

Audio Galore It proved to be a busy April for Gibson Innovations, as they officially announced a number of new audio solutions. Formerly known as WOOX Innovations, the company held an event at Zebra Square, KL last month to announce the name change, in addition to unveiling the new products. Among those launched include a number of sound bars and speakers. The Philips Fidelio B5 has integrated Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II technology for an immersive surround experience. There’s also the Philips Zenit, a speaker system that delivers cinema-like audio. It has Bluetooth and HDMI 4K/2K pass through. Apart from that are two 5.1-channel sound bars that deliver surround sound, without the cable clutter. In addition to speaker systems, several headphones were also launched. Unity through Music with Samsung Malaysia A pool of local talents gathered in March for an awesome night at the Bestnya Bersama “A” Music Festival. The cross-genre music festival was held in Stadium Bukit Jalil, and showcased an array of live performances which were aimed at bridging the gap between the diverse audiences. The night began with beatbox extraordinaire, Shawn Lee getting the crowd into the mood by giving a powerful performance. The excitement was further increased when Internet sensation, Najwa Latif subsequently took over the stage to deliver an energetic and mesmerising collaboration with Shawn. The show continued to rock on as a series of talented line-ups such as pop princess, Ke Qing; rock indie band, Paperplane Pursuit; jazzy soul singer, Liyana Fizi; dynamic rock band, An Honest Mistake; Izzue Islam, Juztin Lan, Forteen, Hyper Act, Faizal Tahir and Venice Min delivered their fantastic performances. An exclusive treat for music lovers, the Bestnya Bersama campaign was launched in conjunction with the arrival of the new Samsung GALAXY A smartphones to further provide a platform for our local musicians to merge various music genres in one stage. The rest of the GALAXY A Team ended the night with a massive Wide Selfie session, leaving the crowd with another memorable Saturday night.

A Knee Injury Won’t Stop 007 Daniel Craig, the current actor to take on the role of MI6 secret agent 007, was injured a couple of months back, while filming ‘Spectre’. Regardless of what body you are blessed with, there is a variety of swimsuits out there waiting to make your day at the beach a great one. Bodies come in all shapes and sizes, but generally they fall under four categories: pear, hourglass, athletic and straight. Just remember, the most important thing is to love your body. Nothing makes you feel, and simultaneously look greater in a swimsuit than your self-confidence.

What This Means: Less curves, more toned edges. Think broader shoulders, narrower hips and muscular legs. The students from The One Academy ESMOD Kuala Lumpur were given the chance to do just that recently, with the project ‘Creativity & Personality’. While they may only be in their 1st year, these budding designers are showing great potential in a series of sketches, illustrating their fantasy five-piece collections. Through this project, the students are also encouraged to explore a different artistry and styles, thereby expanding their horizons.

Linz Lim Xin Ning Swathed in blue, white and grey, Linz Lim’s collection is clearly inspired by the future and what it could be. Silhouettes are exaggerated and feature digitally created prints.

Feather Friends by Chong Shin Yee Derived from the intricate structure of birds’ feathers, Chong Shin Yee’s collection takes earthy tones of ruby, sand brown and royal blue and incorporates them into structured jackets and boxy dresses.

Sustainability by Ryan Alexander Tan Apart from the ‘Creativity and Imagination’ project, students were also put to the task of constructing one garment that would use sustainable materials and look aesthetically pleasing at the same time. During the age of the Old Kingdom, it became the trend to use crude emerald eye shadow, and men would even apply a primitive form of highlighter which they swept from the brow lines to the base of their noses. High Heels Yep, you read right. Back in the 9th century, gallant Persian horseback warriors had the honour of being the first high heel wearers when they designed shoes with extended heels to help them ride horses more steadily. When they paid Europe a visit, the continent’s aristocrats took a shine to their fancy footwear, and heels quickly became a status symbol. Some word origin experts speculate that this is how the term well-heeled, which means wealthy, came about. TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY KENDRICK LAMAR

After his ground-breaking album, Good Kid, M. A. A. D City, which has been certified platinum, Kendrick Lamar surprised us all by releasing his latest album on iTunes, a week before the CDs are to arrive in stores. The Internet was abuzz with talk of this new album, and it even became a trending topic on Twitter. Here’s our take on To Pimp A Butterfly. Lamar kicks off the album with ‘Wesley’s Theory’, which is about

Known for his knack for singing emotional songs, James Bay is back once again with his debut studio album. Called Chaos And The Calm, this album promises a great listening experience as Bay serenades us with his husky voice and awesome music. Opening the album is ‘Craving’, a mid-tempo, guitar-driven rock track that’s heavy on the drum beats. As the song moves into the chorus, the country vibe begins to creep in, which

the pursuit of fame and its effects. In this song, we learn that with great power, greediness and selfishness will eventually take centre stage. The electric and funky hip-hop arrangements in this song makes it amazing. Our favourite has to be ‘King Kunta’. It references the well-known 18th century slave Kunta Kinte, who had his right foot cut off by his masters when he attempted to escape. Listen closely to the lyrics and you will hear some hidden messages about racism. Another great song, ‘U’, is also rather touching, as it talks about the insecurities and complications of being in a relationship. Perhaps even more touching is ‘How Much A Dollar Cost’, which is a song about how sometimes we may deny help to those who really need it. If you’re in need of an inspirational song, look no further. Summing it up, To Pimp A Butterfly is another breakthrough album from Lamar. It truly captures the essence of society, and presents it in a musical manner that’s entertaining, inspiring and touching. This album comes highly recommended.

mixes very well with the pop elements. We have to admit that ‘Craving’ is the perfect introduction for this album, as it’s different from what he’s produced in the past. If you’ve never heard of James Bay’s music before, then you’ll want to start with ‘Hold Back The River’. Just take a trip to Spotify, search for James Bay, and you’ll find that this is the song that’s been listened to the most. There’s little surprise here as this song is really one of those songs that’ll stay in your head, like how ‘Oppa Gangnam Style’ did. What defines Bay’s musical style is an acoustic guitar, great lyrics and addictive rhythms. All of this is present in ‘Let It Go’. Here, Bay describes the painful reality when one has to move on. Bay’s voice is clear, but trembles a little as he pours his soul into the music; making this song a very honest piece from him. With a little bit of country and a little bit of pop, Bay’s Chaos And The Calm is a great album. If you like songs from the likes of Mumford and Sons and Of Monsters and Men, then you’ll love this album.

It wasn’t an easy ride for Madonna’s 13th album, Rebel Heart, as it was stolen and leaked on the Internet. In order to resolve this issue, she said that half of the tracks would not be used, while the other half would be changed. When it finally was launched, the album peaked at number one in various countries, and number two on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and the UK Album Charts. One

She’s the most successful American Idol winner, and for good reason. With a voice that’s highly recognisable and a spunky personality, Kelly Clarkson’s fame is well-deserved. Now, she’s back with her latest studio album and it’s called Piece by Piece. The very first track on the album is ‘Heartbeat Song’, which is a song that we’re sure you’d have heard on the radio by now. Catchy and fun, this song could definitely be

of the songs in this album, ‘Ghosttown’, immediately captured our hearts as it is a beautiful ballad with Madonna’s emotional and excellent vocals. Next, there’s ‘Hold Tight’, which is a fascinating song that we believe will become a radio hit due to her powerful vocals. Among all the songs in this album though, ‘Joan of Arc’ has become our favourite song. An electro-pop song, ‘Joan of Arc’ has a good mix of acoustic instruments and a melody that’s very romantic. There’s also the fact that you can hear the sincerity in her vocals, which makes this song all the more lovable. If you are looking for the catchiest song on the album, listen to ‘Iconic’. The whole song is inspiring and ambitious. The beats and the chorus of the song is memorable and catchy. We can’t help but to sing along with her. Overall, Rebel Heart is an outstanding album that makes Madonna shine. If you’ve been a fan of hers, there’s no reason not to get this album.

The only way to truly appreciate ‘Piece by Piece’ is to hear it yourself, and we truly recommend you to do so. If you wish to listen to a different side of her, listen to ‘Let Your Tears Fall’. In this song, she sounds rather sentimental, which is somewhat unusual from her. You can feel her emotions very clearly in this song as she wants to be the one her friends can rely on. Piece by Piece is an album that shows Clarkson’s artistic tastes and highlights just how much she’s grown since she first won American Idol. This is definitely not her best album, but one that is still noteworthy nonetheless.

MAY 2015 You began writing and producing music at the age of fourteen. How did you let your music be heard? Yeah. Like many teens of the digital generation, I posted my songs online and was spotted by a music promoter. He was like, “Hey, I like your music, I run parties and this Sunday do you want to come and play at one?” I told my parents, they freaked out. They were like, “This is not good; you want to go to an illegal warehouse rave and hackney wick, this doesn’t sound appropriate.” And I was like, “Well, just come!” and they were like, “Okay! Cool!” And yeah, that’s how it started. So your mom is Indian and your dad is Scottish. How much of that mixed heritage had an influence on your life growing up? I didn’t really see myself as being different. There was never really anything out of the ordinary in terms of my background, growing up or anything like that. And coming from the generation that I am from, I don’t see it as a shocking thing, but I remembered my parents telling me when they began going out that it was frowned upon still, to be a mixed race couple. They were kind of very unaware about it until recently. Your past hit ‘Fancy’ and latest song ‘Break the rules’ had rebellious vibes. Are you setting your own rules? I don’t see myself as a pop star, I actually see myself as an anti-pop star. But I guess now, there seems to be a lot of rules like things you can say, things you can’t say and the lies you were meant to tell. I just don’t really have time for that.

I think there are different perceptions on what a feminist is, and how a feminist should dress. And I think now more than ever, that those boundaries are really being kind of broken down and I think that’s great. I have people say to me, how could you be a feminist when you dress like that? And I don’t really understand that statement to be honest, because I can wear whatever the hell that I want and still believe that men and women should have equal rights. Why do you describe yourself as anti-pop star? Last year, I went to Sweden to work on new music, and ended up recording an album’s worth of what were more or less punk songs. That was me being angry at the world. People were trying to get me to replicate ‘I Love It,’ and I feel like I can’t write songs in a contrived way. I had been going to song writing sessions with people that I’ve not worked with before, and I was expected to come up with hits on the spot. That’s not something I’m really used to and it was really depressing. So I banged out some noise, it got out all my aggression, and got me to where I could write pop music again, such as ‘Sucker’, ‘Gold Coins’ and ‘Breaking Up’, which aren’t even the most sneering songs on the album. My punk may sound pop, but my pop is plenty punk.

What do you think about feminism? I feel like there’s a huge wave of girl power right now. There are many people who speak about

How do you feel looking back to the earlier music that you have done? To me, it’s not this amazing music I made when I was 14. A lot of people found the early stuff really annoying, which I now kind of completely agree with. But eventually, the exposure from those songs got me a record deal and I began to make slightly more streamlined, slightly less kooky music. How are you doing in school before you left? Even though I had gained some notice for my work, I still went off to art school as a backup plan. There, I favoured performance art and video art. In one piece, I built a shrine to Justin Bieber, topped it with some Britney Spearsthemed spray paint, and then performed Ms Spear’s ‘Baby One More Time’ with a robot dog. Then I left after a year. How do you feel writing for other artists? Writing sessions for other artists is a break for me. I was a writer of Icona Pop’s bionic, intense ‘I Love It’ and wrote and performed the chorus on Iggy Azalea’s feisty pop-rap thumper ‘Fancy’. Anniversary of Akdong Musician’s Debut and ‘K-Pop Star’ Win

April is a very special day for Akdong Musician as it marks their first year anniversary since the release of their debut, Play. Coincidentally, this date also happens to be their second anniversary since winning ‘K-Pop Star 2’. It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since their first appearance. Let’s spend some time to reminisce on their rise to fame as they are such an extraordinary pair of siblings that brought to us many amazing songs. Everything started on the second season of the tremendously popular singing competition, ‘K-Pop Star’. The sister of the duo, Lee Suhyun acts as the main vocal, while her brother, Lee Chanhyuk is in charge of acoustics and raps occasionally. Ever since their first appearance in th

REVIEWS BLACK LABEL FIESTAR

Fiestar is back, and they’re releasing their first mini-album, which goes by the title Black Label. This album comes more than two years after their debut, so it’s good to finally see what the group has been up to all this while. It begins with ‘You’re Pitiful’, a funky pop song about a girl who refuses to forgive her ex-boyfriend and accept him back. This song is amazing as the girls’ outstanding vocals are accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Moreover, ‘You’re Pitiful’ is written by Shinsadong Tiger, a well-known songwriter. It didn’t surprise us at all because the lyrics is pretty well written too. ‘Hello’ is another astounding song from them as it sounds like a ballad at first, but then becomes something more powerful and energetic. But what makes it stand out is the girls’ lovely and emotional vocals and their rapping. Every single part of the song blends well, making it our favourite song in this album. Black Label contains a total of six tracks, all of which are great listens for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Like most Korean songs today, many tracks from this album can be used as dance music. The group may not be as popular as other Korean groups, but their music is undeniably catchy.

INFINITE H is the first certified sub-group of South Korean boy group, Infinite. Only two vocalists make up this group, and they consist of Dongwoo and Hoya. They have finally made their comeback with the release of Fly Again, their second extended play album with a total of seven tracks that’s full of new material. This album begins with ‘Pretty’, a hip-hop song with marvellous bass lines. It’s a great song to have on your playlist when you’re studying or burning the midnight oil. For something a little more exciting, you’ll want to take a listen to ‘Aren’t You Going Somewhere?’ which is best described as a rap battle between Dongwoo and Hoya, who both have distinctive rapping styles. There is no reason not to like ‘Bump’, especially when Sujeong from Lovelyz steps into the picture. Her sweet and tender voice is a great contrast to the duo’s voices. It’s also a catchy song that would most likely get you moving to the beat.Hip-hop lovers would definitely love this album, as it offers plenty of great tunes to dance to. There are a total of seven tracks on this album, all of which are easily recommendable.

‘K-Pop Star 2’, the duo with incredible sibling chemistry and harmonisation has always impressed the judges and audiences. Eventually, they won that competition with their refreshing voices and performances and chose to sign with YG Entertainment. The group then released their first official album, Play under YG Entertainment and all of the songs were produced and written by Lee Chanhyuk. Incredibly, the album went to number one on several top Korean music charts and also charted as number two on the Billboard World Album Chart. Two singles from the album, Given Love and 200% have incredible combined sales of over 2.5 million in total. With the two singles, they have also created a continuous storyline starting with 200%, and then followed up by Given Love. The MVs were uploaded to their official YouTube channel and received a total of over 27.4 million views. Furthermore, they have released an official single, titled Time and Fallen Leaves after their debut which sold over 722,000 copies. As you would have guessed, the single peaked at number one on Gaon chart. Time flies, congratulations to the duo on their massive success and hopefully we can listen to their next album soon!

Niel

Amber Liu is an American rapper and singer who’s pretty active in South Korea now. Her abilities have managed to land her a spot amongst South Korean girl group, f(x), and now, she’s managed to release an extended play album, as a solo artist. Titled Beautiful, this album contains a total of five tracks and has amazingly managed to peak at number two on Billboard’s World Albums chart. The title track, ‘Beautiful’, shows us a side of her that’s seldom shown. It’s a simple song that’s accompanied mostly by acoustic guitars, but it truly displays her vocal prowess. The Amber that we are all familiar with is back in ‘Shake That Brass’ – a fun, catchy and playful party song. The use of brass instruments here adds a breath of fresh air and her voice is really powerful here. This song also features Taeyeon, whose soft and sweet voice contrasts that of Amber’s. Overall, Beautiful is a great album, where Amber clearly demonstrates her ability to be more than a rapper. Moreover, every song on Beautiful is great! This is a high quality album that you don’t want to miss.

For the past four years, Niel was the lead vocalist of South Korean boy group, Teen Top. But this year, Niel released his first official solo extended play that’s titled oNIELy. This album has seven songs and sees Niel collaborating with many different artists, such as C.A.P., L.Joe and Dok2. It’s also worth mentioning that oNIELy has topped the weekly Hanteo Album Chart, the Bugs album chart top 100 as well as the Gaon album chart. The album starts with ‘Only You’, a slow R&B song with Niel’s smooth and sexy voice. There’s a lot of reverb going on in this song, which serves to enhance Niel’s already dreamy voice. Our favourite song in this album goes to ‘Lovekiller’ though. It’s a great song that uses simple tunes from acoustic guitars to accompany Niel’s soft voice, before gradually changing to a more exciting tempo. However, there’s a little bit of rapping in this song, which we think isn’t necessary. Last but not least, we have ‘Song of an Angel’, which is an extremely soothing and comforting song. The piano and drums offer a good rhythm that serves to set up the mood for the entire song. It’s definitely one of the songs to play when it’s raining outside. In a nutshell, if you’re looking for an album to relax to whilst drinking a cup of coffee, oNIELy fits the bill.

New Ground Get Personal: Orang

mysterious Kuala Lumpur based musician, Azfar (who was also previously known as iamslacker) is certainly one that is underrated as he rarely appears in any live gigs. Occasionally, he would play unannounced at one of our local open mic nights (hint, hint: TheBee) and yet manages to maintain a low profile. As of late last year, we are finally able to feast our eyes and ears on this gem. In order for his music to grow, Azfar has taken a leap of faith to step out of his comfort zone, and now entertains us with more live shows and active collaborations with other musicians. A multi-tasker at heart, Azfar is a full time Mass Communication student in Universiti Teknologi MARA who also juggles a hectic schedule as a part timer in a local cafe. Despite his undying passion for music, Azfar has no plans to live off a career as a musician due to other responsibilities that currently require his attention. Looking back, Azfar revealed to us his love for boy bands back in the days when he was still a kid (all thanks to his older sisters and cousins). Laughing, he admitted that KRU was in the mix as well. Who would have guessed that our unconventional musician once looked up to KRU as the coolest band ever? Music aside, Azfar is also a big fan of video games, films and especially magazines. “Looking at neatly designed magazines is visually stimulating,” said Azfar who is a Taman Tun Dr Ismail resident.

Music Conversation

Drawing influence from a series of genres, Azfar initially listened to a considerable amount of punk rock and ska such as MxPx, Catch 22 and Green Day before getting obsessively hooked on The Strokes throughout his teenage years. As he entered college, he discovered a new love for Animal Collective which eventually paved the way to many other unorthodox and intriguing bands that are… let’s just say a little more unusual than mainstream music. A self-taught musician, Azfar often starts his creative process with a melody in which he would repeatedly hum, to pin down the right chords and notes through his guitar. Subsequently, the melody will be recorded on to his laptop where he begins the process of adding and subtracting bits of elements until it is all sweet. “With software like Ableton, there’s a whole new world of possibilities and arrangements to be discovered,” enthuses Azfar. While some songs can be completed within a day, others may actually stretch up to several months. Touching on life experiences that prominently spice up his musical influences, Azfar highlighted the extremities of being

either in love or hateful. “I think it’s hard to run away from writing about emotional themes. Not sappy, but simple feelings,” said Azfar. In fact, the themes that revolve around his music often vary according to the atmosphere of different places which in return, channels a specific vibe to his song writing. Over the past years, Azfar had also been featured several times on The Wknd (despite his anonymous identity) in which he expressed his gratitude to one of the bands there who initially recommended him. “I’ve been lucky,” added Azfar. Although “Sorang” was the track that put him under the spotlight, Azfar revealed that “PJ Blues” is actually his favourite self-composed track to date.

Live Gigs

Despite his previous experience with open mics, Azfar believes he is still relatively new when it comes to the world of live performances. He jokingly admitted that he could count the number of times in which he had played live with his bare hands. Nonetheless, one of the most memorable gigs was the opportunity to open for an instrumental rock band known as “Man Under Zero Effort”. When asked about his mandatory instruments, Azfar owes it to electric and acoustic guitars to rock the stage!

Down the Road with Music

All throughout his journey with music, Azfar always strive to elicit intense emotions from listeners through Orang’s music. In the long run, he also wishes to play in more shows and most importantly, to share his very own debut album with the world. “I hope my side bands will flourish too,” added Azfar. Ultimately, it’s all just about creating more music as it pushes him to be more productive and positive.

AA Celebration Milestone of Our 100th Issue

n life, there are many things worth celebrating – birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and the list goes on. Last month, we really had something to celebrate because we managed to print our 100th issue! Of course, it wouldn’t have been a celebration if we kept quiet and didn’t share the fun and joy. That’s why we went to 10 different colleges and universities around the Klang Valley to spread the joy. Among the tertiary institutes we went to include INTI International University Nilai, Monash University Malaysia, SEGi University, KDU University College Glenmarie, INTI International College Subang, BAC PJ, MMU Cyberjaya, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, and Sunway University. Needless to say, we were able to inject some fun into the daily lives of the students at the institutes we went to! Students had the opportunity to win some really cool prizes including Razer gaming mice and mouse mats, San Francisco Coffee vouchers, Jawbone UP24 activity trackers, Targus Drifter Macbook cases, and much more. Winning the prizes were incredibly easy. All that was needed was to give our Facebook a “Like”, and to complete a really short survey to register. Once registered, participants had to successfully toss three rings onto bottles and once that was done, they could proceed to a specially prepared air box that contained several floating ping pong balls. The prizes were dependent on which ping pong ball participants managed to grab. Apart from that, there were many great deals at our roadshows as well. Brother, for example, were selling a range of printers at discounted prices. You could also have purchased selected GP Batteries products, and gotten another for free! PenDrive was also there, selling various flash storage solutions at great prices. All in all, we had tonnes of fun organising the event and hoped that whoever joined our roadshows had as much fun as we did. Following the saying, “When opportunity knocks, grab it without hesitation” is what made Sheehan a successful entrepreneur as she understands that opportunity doesn’t always come to you. Prior to becoming a licensee, she had been in the publishing line for about two years as well as a spell being a distributor of tinted films for buildings. It was through these two working experiences that she learned to utilise any given opportunity well. The Job Scope

It took her about three months to setup and get everything done and here is where other challenges come in. As a licensee, you are required to operate your own outlet. In other words, she would need to oversee the sales, staff, rooms’ quality, customer service and all the other day-to-day operational issues. Although fixed instructions and standard operating procedures are given by the co-founders, Sheehan would still need to get approval from them, especially when it comes to matters of escape room location, design, mechanism and marketing strategies.

The Challenges

However, among all of the challenges she has experienced, she opines that the toughest part of her job is to manage and maintain a team effectively. It becomes particularly hard when your staff do not take their jobs seriously. In her efforts to forge a professional team, she lets her staff in on the company’s direction, and actively encourages them to be a part of the company instead of just being a mere employee. This is further backed up by patiently training, complimenting and rewarding her staff where appropriate. Building a positive work relationship is key for her, as “problem solving is not about dwelling on what has already happened, but on how to overcome it by thinking positively”.

Parting Advice

Everyone’s got to start somewhere, but you’re already halfway there if you have a goal in mind. It’s never too late to be successful. It’s all about how much effort you are willing to put in and how far you would like to go. Just look at Sheehan. She already owns the license of two Escape Rooms, one in Times Square and the other in Seremban Prima. We reckon that is achievement enough, yet to her, being the licensee for Escape Room is but a stepping stone for further advancement and ventures into the business world in the future. A Moment with Jared

A fan of Japanese animation at heart, Jared Lee has never doubted his intention of being an animation artist. Once a full timer in an event agency while freelancing as a storyboard artist, Lee’s career has taken a complete 180-degree turn when he decided to embark on a journey with Grim Film. What initially appeared to be a far-fetched dream finally saw the light of day when he scripted the short film, “The Long Distance Relationship”. Fuelled by determination, Lee was certain that he had to make it into a short film. Along with a minimal budget, he gathered a team to make it happen and without much thought, they uploaded it on YouTube under the channel called Grim Film. To Lee’s surprise, he was bombarded the next day with messages and calls as the video spiralled into a viral sensation. Most importantly, Lee saw that as an opportunity to kick-start a production house and basically that was how Grim Film was born.

On Grim Film

Indeed, Grim Film turned out to be a blessing as it has currently grown into a full-fledged production company that produces a variety of videos from short films, sketches, corporate videos and music videos to even commercials. Some of Grim Film’s most popular short films include “You are Loved” and “Sincerely, The End” (yes, the one that stars Joseph Germani and Marianne Tan) that scored almost a million views on YouTube! The team now consists of Lee as the co-founder (who writes, produces, directs and secures clients) and a few other members who work side-by-side as a family. “All thanks to the cosy work space, and with just a few of us, we’re more like a tight-knit family rather than an employer-employee relationship,” said Lee who is a Subang Jaya native.

The Creative Process

Lee revealed to us that a majority of his inspirations literally pop out from everywhere. Sometimes, just looking at a fishpond or something as mediocre as an abandoned pothole on the road could inspire him. When it comes to inspirations, Lee lives by this principle from Neil Gaiman; “Everybody has a secret world inside of them. I mean everybody. All of the people in the whole world, I mean everybody — no matter how dull and boring they are on the outside. Inside them they’ve all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds... Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands, maybe.”

Success on YouTube?

Frankly, many of us may wonder on the possibility of actually making a living out of YouTube. Well, ladies and gentleman, you can finally clear your doubts, as Lee is here to break it down for us. First fact: YouTube is still a growing industry in Malaysia, hence solely relying on YouTube as a main source of income can be extremely challenging. Lee revealed to us that on average, a YouTuber is required to secure at least one million subscribers with consistent views before a substantial amount of income could be generated. As for Grim Film, with an estimated 80,000 subscribers, living off YouTube is therefore unrealistic. This is where Grim Film comes in as a production house to further generate income from commercials and corporate videos. At this point, if you are feeling a little discouraged, hold that thought. It’s because of YouTube that Grim Film exists today. Without YouTube, Jared admitted that there wouldn’t be sufficient exposure for his team to be recognised and the Grim Film we know today would not exist.

Shout out to Subscribers

In every video or short film that Grim Film delivers, it really isn’t all fun and dandy. There are actually a series of processes and considerations (scouting for locations, managing the costs, planning the story board, casting talents and a whole lot more) that they will have to go through before any materials are uploaded on YouTube. Despite the hard work, Grim Film is eager for their subscribers to know that every bit of support matters. And yes, for those who are looking forward to Grim Film’s latest project, the team is in the midst of shooting a web series that Lee has been planning since 2013. Stay tuned, folks!

On a lighter note, Lee who recently got engaged with Marianne Tan (yes, yes, the sweet lady from all the viral hits), would also like to deliver a note of apology to all of our male readers out there. The Doublewoot Beginning

Fashion is a passion for many, so what happens when you decide to mould that into a lucrative business? For Helen and Heliene Tan, the sibling duo founders of successful online boutique Doublewoot, it was a dream that turned into reality, thanks to raw passion and a lot of elbow grease. It all started in 2007, when the younger sister of the two, Heliene was still a law student. Her great love of fashion had prompted her to source for unconventional fashion pieces among wholesale markets to sell. Knowing her sister Helen shared her interest, she decided to rope her and her website design and Photoshop skills in. Just like that, Heliene’s good eye for chic fashion, and Helen’s knack for putting together a neat website gave birth to Doublewoot. From Day 1, Doublewoot had a way of standing out from the competition. Being born and raised in Penang, they decided to run the boutique in their hometown. As most blogshop and retail boutique aficionados would know, most similar ventures are based in KL or PJ to reach a potentially bigger and more fashion-conscious audience. Not for the Tan sisters. “We wanted to work somewhere close to our family because being a startup, we wanted to get as much help as we can. Plus, setting up Doublewoot in our hometown allows us to grow, surrounded by people who are close to us,” says Helen. When you hear it being put that way, opening shop in your backyard doesn’t seem like such a bad idea, does it? Once the location was settled, Helen and Heliene got the ball rolling by purchasing apparel from wholesale shops and selling them in a blogshop. Orders were taken via good ol’ email, and since Facebook, Instagram and smartphones were non-existent back then, they had to plant themselves in front of the computer 24 hours a day to advertise their blogshop on chatboxes. Since the blog and email services were free, and the sisters worked from home, everything was cost-free except for the stocks. Therefore, even though Helen and Heliene started off with just RM1,000, they managed to make it work.

The Doublewoot Upgrade

As soon as Doublewoot started to make a name for itself, the girls engaged a web company to take them from a blog to a proper e-commerce site. It made a big difference, especially in the processing of orders, as most of it could now be automated. “Now we are pretty systemised in terms of our processes because we have a dedicated return department, customer service, accounts and warehouse management,” explains Heliene. The look of the website and streamlined system are not all that’s changed. While they began by taking stocks from wholesale markets, today they have a dedicated factory based overseas which manufactures designs conjured up from their own minds. Not only does this ensure Doublewoot’s designs are exclusive, it also allows the sisters to be very stringent in the quality of their apparel and maintain their affordability.

The Doublewoot Inspiration

Speaking of designs, where do Helen and Heliene get their inspiration from? It can be trendy pieces from the streets, fashion magazines, fashion sites, or runways - and the search is constant. The main ethos when it comes to their clothes is this: high quality fashion pieces that are affordable and wearable at the same time; enabling their customers to feel chic and comfortable all at once. Doublewoot is also known for producing timeless, basic garments with impeccable cutting and top-notch workmanship that stands the test of time. The wearability and consistency can be credited to the sisters’ hands-on approach to everything, from fabric sourcing and measurement taking to personal fittings. It is this very commitment to quality that has led to celebrity clients like Daphne Iking, whom the sisters first struck a friendship with when they sent her some clothes for review. The Bella ntv7 talk show host fell in love with Doublewoot’s offerings straight away, and from there, good word spread to the television personality’s friends, who are also loyal customers and ambassadors of the brand today.

There were a lot of conflicts and misunderstandings along the way, but the sisters have consistently put their family first and overcome them with talks and mutual trust. Looking back, they find that the whole journey has been nothing short of a blessing, regardless of the good or the bad. Without it, they might not have understood that “being honest and reliable is the key to a sustainable business on top of providing quality items and good after-sales service.” Eight years have gone by and it is the deep love for what they do and good profits that has fuelled the business all this while. “We let things move naturally but keep our passions burning hot!” quips Helen. While they might not have started out with a lot of knowledge about the industry, they have gained countless experiences, overcome many challenges, and faced abundant hardships; all of which have kept their ‘fire’ burning, instead of extinguishing it. CANCER Nasopharyngeal cancer is a cancer that starts in the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose and near the base of skull. Performance Thanks to the five different DSC pre-sets, almost all the music we played sounded fairly good. In tracks like Eric Clapton’s live acoustic performance of ‘Layla’, there’s good definition. However, with tracks like Nico & Vinz’s ‘Am I Wrong’, the BTM2280 had minor issues with presence, sounding slightly hollow. When it comes to volume, the BTM2280 packs 20 Watts worth of punch. This easily allows it to fill a small lecture hall with music. Overall, the audio performance relies heavily on the DSC pre-set you choose, so it’s recommended to cycle through the different pre-sets for different types of songs/tracks.

t’s likely that you’ve been in a situation where you’d like to share a video on your mobile device, but the limited screen size forces friends to crowd around you and strain their necks to watch the video. Well, say farewell to those days because the PicoPix PPX 4350 Wireless is now in town.

Design If you’re unfamiliar with the Philips PicoPix range, it’s basically the brand’s range of portable (and pocketable) projectors. The PPX 4350 Wireless is part of this series of projectors and right off the bat, it’s easy to see why. It’s not wider than a 4-inch smartphone and its thickness is approximately two smartphones stacked on top of each other. It essentially looks like a torchlight. Take a look at the top of the PPX 4350 Wireless and you’ll find a wheel that serves as the focusing mechanism. Apart from that, there’s a navigational cluster and a button to go back to the previous option/screen. C+: Thank you for having a career chat with us, Belinda. Please tell us more about yourself. B: I’m a fulltime TV Host for Bella on NTV7. I am also an emcee for events, an actress, and a voiceover talent for radio advertisements. But most importantly, I am a mum to a three-and-ahalf-year old princess. C+: You have been working in show business since your early days on Astro Hitz TV’s UVJ Search. Was it something you always wanted to pursue as a career, or did it start out as a fun hobby that became much more? B: It was something that I had dreamt of doing but never actually believed I had the ability to pursue further. So, initially I was looking forward to a career behind the scenes as a TV producer because I love being in this industry. However, when the opportunity came about for me to be in front of the camera, I thought, why not and I gave it a shot. Ten years on and I’m still loving it!

n honour of Mother’s Day, we turn to celebrity mum, Belinda Chee who shared with us her experience of motherhood. Best known for her multi talents in the world of hosting, emceeing and modelling, many of us may also recognise her bubbly and uplifting voice on radio advertisements (think U Mobile or Monash University). This month, we had the opportunity to slip in between her busy schedule as she shared with us the ups and downs of parenthood as well as the importance of self-pampering.

C+: Aside from your many hosting gigs, you also starred as an actress in many of our local productions. Is acting something you would like to continue to pursue? B: Frankly, it is something I enjoy doing as it grants me the opportunity to experience the world through the lens of different characters. However, acting does occupy a lot of time (ranging from 15 hours per day and it stretches over two or three months) and great roles are few and far between. Especially for a ‘banana’ like me, it takes double the time and effort just to learn my Mandarin lines. So, acting has sort of taken a back seat to my family and my hosting jobs. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t say no if a good role comes along! C+: What’s next on your agenda? Are there any other projects in the works that you can share with our readers? B: Well, I’m currently co-hosting Bella on NTV7 and it’s a daily show (Mondays to Fridays at 11am). Honestly, that’s keeping me pretty occupied so I do not have much spare time to take up other projects. Most importantly, I’m more concerned about spending time with my family now. Perhaps, I’m also not as ambitious as I used to be so I’m not actively trying to pursue other projects to be a part of. C+: On a lighter note, what’s one thing we would be surprised to know about you? B: Here’s something that not many might know: I used to swim competitively. I started taking part in swimming competitions representing

my state of Sarawak as well as Malaysia since I was 8 years old until I finished high school. C+: Four years have passed since you gave birth to your beautiful daughter, Danielle. How has motherhood been treating you? B: Oh, it has been a steep learning curve and truth be told, I’m still learning how to be a good mother every day! But I have to say, I enjoy being a mother (to a pre-schooler rather than to a new-born) much more now. Children at this stage are so impressionable and inquisitive that it is of upmost importance to be a role model in order to guide them to be the best that they can be. C+: What do you enjoy doing the most with Danielle? B: I enjoy talking to her - she has the best questions and answers for everything! We also love to sing and read together. C+: As a mother who works, how do you manage to stay so vibrant and beautiful all the time? B: I’m definitely not vibrant and beautiful all the time! In fact, I’m a slob especially when I’m at home. I have to really dress and doll up for work so whenever I’m not at work, I wear minimal makeup and dress as comfortably as I can while still looking presentable. C+: What do you do in order to maintain a healthy balance between work and family? B: I have learnt to prioritise and not juggle too many things at once. Even when I only have half an hour a day to spend with my family, I always make sure it’s quality time spent! As mothers, I think sometimes we tend to overlook the third person in this equation of work and family, which is ourselves. So, give yourself some ‘me’ time: go for a workout, pamper yourself with a massage or facial and don’t forget to treat yourself once in a while. Believe me, you’ll feel more invigorated after and will be in a better shape for your job and your family. C+: This Mother’s day, I want… B: To say thank you to my mother and to all mothers out there. There are times when you might feel overworked and unappreciated, but know that you do have the toughest job in the world and no one else can do the job better than you!

any would want to own a car that could be passed down as a legacy, which means that many would want the Jaguar F-TYPE Project 7. Unfortunately, not many will get their hands on one as there will only ever be 250 units of these beautifully hand-built machines coming out from England. Of these 250 cars, only two will make their way here to Malaysia. If you think this car looks familiar, it’s because the team behind it took inspiration from the Jaguar D-TYPE, a car that won the Le Mans three times. In case you were wondering, the number 7 is the total number of times Jaguar has won the Le Mans. When it comes to performance figures, this car does the 0-100km/h dash in 3.9 seconds. This is possible because aluminium is used for the body, making it incredibly lightweight. In addition, under the hood is a 5.0 litre V8 engine that’s supercharged, and tuned to output 575PS and 680Nm of torque. As for top speed, it’s digitally capped at 300km/h. These figures officially pins the F-TYPE Project 7 as the fastest sprinter from Jaguar’s production cars line up. To ensure all that power is well transferred to the wheels, Jaguar used an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Taking a look at the handling, this car makes use of bespoke front suspension knuckles and new anti-roll bars. The engineers also increased the stiffness of the springs and dampers, making the overall suspension settings 50% stiffer at the front, and 8% stiffer at the rear, when compared to the F-TYPE V8 S Roadster. Of course, this car also makes full use of Jaguar’s exclusive carbon-ceramic brake system. The price? It’s only available upon application. For a reference though, the Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupe, which uses the same engine as the Project 7, is priced at RM1.16 million.

n our April issue, we introduced to you Jasmine Christal-Lin Joseph, a 24 year-old who did what most of us are still only dreaming of – travel around (a large part of) the world. How did she do it? Couchsurfing. If you missed our first part, couchsurfing is the practice of staying with locals of the countries you’re visiting. We also covered Jasmine’s background, steps to becoming a couchsurfer and tips for being a happy and safe couchsurfer. Read on for more on Jasmine’s experiences as a couchsurfer in the countries she has stepped foot in. Where I’ve Been I’ve been to countries on two continents - Asia and Europe. In Asia, I went to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, and South Korea. In Europe, I went to Germany, Amsterdam, Belgium, Paris, Spain, Portugal and London.

Vietnam For my first couchsurfing trip, my three friends and I decided on Hanoi, Vietnam. There, we slept on the second floor of a restaurant. The place was okay, as it had a proper mattress. The host was also accommodating, as he allowed us to use the kitchen. Of course, the ingredients in the kitchen were off limits, but we didn’t have a problem as just across the road was an open market where we could easily get groceries. We’d then cook our own food, and we even made dinner for the host! It was our way of showing gratitude as he let us stay for free. We only had one problem staying there – the host was the only one who spoke English, and he wasn’t around most of the time. We tried to speak to his employees and mother at the restaurant, but needless to say, we just resorted to smiling after a while. Japan The most memorable trip I had was to Tokyo. We stayed at a 19-year-old boy’s house. When we arrived, it was still really early, 6am, to be precise. We couldn’t contact the boy, so we had to wait at

a McDonald’s first. When we reached the nearest McDonald’s, he finally called us, saying that he had just woken up! Finally, we got to his house, and he welcomed us in. The next thing we knew, he was throwing things like dirty laundry, out of his house. Once we got inside, we realised how small the house really is. I’ve heard about how small houses in Japan were, but I was still shocked by the size. The living area was pretty much just a square. It was a landed property, with stairs at the side that led up to another person’s home. His place was just really messy, like it is for most teenagers living alone. We actually thought of going to stay somewhere else at first, but we fell asleep there because it was early morning and we were so tired. After that, we asked the boy if we could clean his house and he said: “Feel free! Even my mom doesn’t come here.” We cleaned up the space and vacuumed our way through the mess. Once we got to know him, we found that he was actually a really funny guy. He took us all over Tokyo, and we even did a little video about him. He happened to be learning English at the time, so we swapped our language skills: we taught him some English, and he taught us Japanese in return. Amsterdam Not all the experiences we had were good. We also came by a few bad, dangerous ones along the way. This guy we stayed with in Amsterdam has got to be the most terrible host I’ve ever had. When we checked him out online, he had three bad references, and they were all from girls. They mentioned things like how he had brought them to clubs and touched them inappropriately, and how he had locked the door when they said they wanted to go home. Additionally, they said he would only let them out when he felt better, and even then he would just throw their bags outside. With that being said, we still took the risk because we couldn’t find anywhere else to stay, and the other hostels were either fully booked or pricey. He looked alright, but he gave us a weird vibe. He wouldn’t look us in the eye, and he liked talking about girls in bikinis. When we asked him about Amsterdam, he would keep asking us about Malaysia, and often said he wanted to go there and look at pretty girls. Every one of the days we stayed there, he would constantly have the TV on, and it would always be a show with girls in bikinis. Every morning, he would call out my name and call me Joan of Arc, and call my

Stayed in an attic in Germany friend Nicholas Cage, for no reason. We never went out with him because we were too scared, although he did ask us to go clubbing with him. We stayed there for four days, and believe it or not, when my friend made a detour to Amsterdam for New Year’s, he decided to stay with the weird man again. Apparently, he liked him. I guess he’s okay when it comes to guys, it’s just when he’s around girls that he gets weird. How Couchsurfing Changed My Life Pre-couchsurfing days, I was the kind of person who pick the people I want to hang out with. When I didn’t feel like mingling, I would clam up because I was uncomfortable. Since my couchsurfing trips, I’ve become much better at socialising as it is part of couchsurfing. After all, you can’t just not speak to the person whose house you’re living in. I’ve also learned to adapt pretty quickly. Previously when I went on holidays I’d always stay in hotels. In Guangzhou, China, it was a different story as we lived in a slum, and the moment I walked out, my feet would get all muddy and smell like rubbish. The first time I was there, I had to climb seven floors up to the abode as there was no lift. I wanted to cry then. The toilet was also really small, and you basically bathe and take care of all your bodily functions there. But, you can just give me two days, and I’ll adapt right away. During my trips, I liked learning about the local culture and how they lived there. I have become more open as a result; I’m more willing to share and even give stuff away now. If someone gives me something, I’ll just offer them something in return, like my shirt, saying that it’s from Malaysia. Plus, couchsurfing has given me so many international friends. I have friends from Belgium, Japan and so on. The real purpose of couchsurfing is not to stay overseas for free, it’s to meet people who love to travel like you do, and when you meet them you bond by sharing stories. Now, when they visit Malaysia, I can offer them to stay at my place as well. Three of the people whose houses I couchsurfed at, have now lived at my place, so it’s a win-win situation. We went from being couchsurfers to couchsurfing hosts ourselves.

very year, filial sons, daughters and loving husbands across the world sign an unspoken agreement to flock the malls in search of perfect last-minute gifts. Like every year since it became a worldwide phenomenon, mums will be showered with cards, chocolates and flowers on Sunday. Many countries, particularly in the Western world, adopts the second Sunday in May as the official Mother’s Day. However, you’d be surprise to know that in certain countries, religious or cultural holidays revolving around women and families have evolved into their own celebrations of motherhood. In some countries, it is celebrated on different days in May while others celebrate it at entirely different times of the year from August to December. Here’s a look at how five countries around the world honour mums.

France: FEte Des MEres The French do not celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May as the Americans do. Instead, a 1950 law in France reserves the “fetes des meres” for the last Sunday in the month of May. Similar to Americans, family dinner is the norm, and traditionally the mother being honoured is bestowed with a cake that looks like a bouquet of flowers. Since France is a country of wines and grapes, gifts generally revolve around exceptional bottles of wine. Other common gifts include fashion pieces and perfumes (after all, Paris is a fashion capital!). 66

All Indonesian Women’s Congress

Indonesia: Hari Ibu Mother’s Day in Indonesia plays a unique role in Indonesian history, culture, and society. Interestingly, it’s a day not just for mothers but also for the entire women’s community. As a national holiday, it is celebrated on 22nd of December. This day owes its genesis to the first All Indonesian Women’s Congress that was held on the very same day in 1928. Exactly 44 years later, 22nd of December was officially declared as Mother’s Day. A day that was initially aimed to celebrate the spirit of Indonesian women and improve the condition of the nation, it is now also celebrated for expressing love and gratitude to mothers. In Indonesia, Mother’s Day is all about freedom, democracy and women’s empowerment. The customary practice is to send gifts, flowers and greeting cards to mothers and women. Many people also hold surprise parties and competitions (such as the Kebaya wearing competition).

Thailand: Sook San Wan Mae Thailand is among one of the countries that commemorates Mother’s Day with immense splendour and grandeur. Here is an interesting fact. It is no coincidence that the occasion is observed on 12th of August as it marks the birthday of the revered Queen of Thailand, Queen Sirikit. Known as the “Mother of the Nation”, Mother’s day is Queen sirikit therefore specially commemorated on 12th of August to honour her. A national holiday in the region, Mother’s Day inevitably marks a gala of merriment for people of all ages. In fact, preparation for the special day starts a week before. All buildings are decorated with flags, portraits of Her Majesty, flower garlands, bejewelled lights as well as magnificent adornments around the Grand Palace and literally at every corner of the city. Of course, it is also a day to pay tribute to loving mothers. White jasmine flower is gifted to mothers as the flower is considered to be an emblem of maternal love. Some other activities carried out include performing charitable activities, offering food to monks, and collecting donations.

Mexico: El Dia de las Madres Mexicans take Mother’s Day very seriously. The significance of Mother’s Day in Mexico can be judged by the fact that it is declared as an important holiday. Mexicans come together to celebrate this special day at the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a place chosen due to its symbol of motherhood. Celebrated on the 10th of May, it’s deemed as the busiest day of the year for Mexican restaurants. Flowers are compulsory but the day is also filled with music, food and often, the distribution of “tamales” and “atole” (a traditional morning meal to all local mothers). Following a local custom, children honour their mothers by making themselves present and serenading the song “Las Manaitas” on the eve of Mother’s Day. The highpoint of the event includes special mass organised by churches to honour The Virgin Mary. Yes, Mexicans love two mothers; their birth mother and other mother that is shared with God.

Japan: Haha No Hi Mother’s Day was initially celebrated on 6th of March during the Shōwa period in Japan. Similar to Thailand, the day also honours the birthday of Empress Kōjun (mother of Emperor Akihito). However, by 1949, they started celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. On this day, Japanese load their mothers with flowers especially red carnations and roses to express sweetness, purity and endurance. Special prayers and public gatherings are also organised in order to make them feel special.

At its essence, the celebration of Mother’s Day is based on the special bond shared between mother and child. Unfortunately, as we grow older, we also tend to overlook the sentimental value that comes along with it. Instead of perpetuating the commercialisation of Mother’s Day through picking up gifts or dining out, can you truly recall the last time you actually crafted a homemade card or cook a meal for your mum? Founded by four friends from the same university, Kenneth Kuan, Ching Yoong, Ramesh and Sammie, the idea for Guac! came around while they were still in university. Back then, the group of friends were (and still are) greatly interested in Mexican food. It was an easy decision then, to start a business revolving around this type of food. However, it wasn’t until a couple of years later, that the group of friends decided to invest in a food truck. The decision to start Guac! turned out to be a good one because today, you’re able to get your hands on authentic Mexican food, including Nachos and Tacos (both available with chicken, beef or fish), as well as Burritos (beef). While the menu is rather limited for now, Sammie has promised that desserts will make its way into the menu sometime soon. You can expect Guac! to offer churros and chipotle brownies. After a couple of minutes, the food came and we were able to dig into what Guac! has to offer. First, we tried the beef Tacos. Filled with fresh tomatoes that are cut into cubes, lettuce, as well as a little secret sauce, the beef tacos are simple, yet tasty. The beef is minced and very tender, while the fresh vegetables offer a good contrast to the earthy beef. There’s also a very mild spiciness in this dish, making it a great option for those who love spicy food that doesn’t overwhelm the taste buds. We then tried the chicken Nachos, which is a great alternative for our friends who can’t eat beef. It’s the same great taste, minus the earthy taste of beef. The

verdict? We think the Tacos are great, but they’re snack-sized, so it’s wise to order two or more. The tacos are priced at RM7 for one, and RM12 for two. Next, we tried the beef Burritos, which is the best-selling item in Guac!’s menu currently. The burritos are significantly larger than the tacos, making them a better choice for those who have more space in their stomach. Similar to the beef Tacos, the beef here is minced and there’s lettuce and tomatoes. However, the secret sauce from the Tacos is absent. As for tastiness, we’re giving it good marks, though we would have loved it more if it was a bit spicier. After that, we were given the chicken Nachos to try. It is served with melted cheese, shredded chicken and once again, lettuce and tomatoes. The Nachos are fried upon order, so they remain fresh and crispy. Needless to say, the crispy Nachos and well-marinated chicken go absolutely well together and make for the perfect snack when watching a movie. If you want a light dinner and love Mexican food, keep an eye out for the Guac! food truck, because this is likely where you’ll find the best Nachos, Burritos and Tacos on wheels.

“Look like a girl, act like a lady and think like a man”. I think that that is the very best advice I’ve ever received from my mother. She also emphasise that I should always stay happy, be optimistic, enjoy myself and to always be grateful for everything.

“Stay positive and be happy”. Just like every health conscious mother, she also constantly reminds me to maintain a balanced diet of more vegetables with less meat. Oh, and not forgetting, a regular exercise routine!

The Germany he used to know is now overrun by immigrants and led by a female Prime Minister. Not long after that, the world becomes enamoured by him. The third book set in the Carrington’s Department Store series sees the manager of its luxury handbag department, Georgie Hart seemingly settled since a reality TV series gave her and her store a huge publicity alexandra brown boost. here are some very recognisable singers and musicians in the world of anime. However, as much as we love their voices and music, we seldom get the chance to know more about them outside of their basic biography. But thanks to Animax Asia, we had the opportunity to interview three popular Japanese anime-song artistes: ELISA, May’n and Mami Kawada. We can’t wait to share their thoughts with you, so read on to learn more about them!

Mami Kawada: In Japan, anime songs are growing in popularity. Hence, besides just singing, I would like to contribute to the next generation who are highly interested in the anime industry. In order to achieve that, I would try my best to make the anime industry more exciting by singing different types of songs for anime.

Who’s ELISA? You probably know who ELISA is if you have watched the “ef” series; “ef: A Tale of Melodies” and “ef: A Tale of Memories”; “The World God Only Knows” (Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai) or “A Certain Scientific Railgun” (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun). Not only is she a talented Japanese female singer, but she is also a fashion model with Elite Model Management.

Mami Kawada If you have watched “Burning-Eyed Shana” (Shakugan no Shana), you should know who Mami Kawada is, as her music and songs have been featured in it. We knew her through “A Certain Magical Index” (Toaru Majutsu no Indekkusu). You may also know her from other anime, as she is a member of ‘I’ve Sound’, which is well-known for providing theme songs for many extremely successful anime.

In the future, what sort of anime projects would you like to be involved in?

What about May’n? Mei Nakabayashi is a Japanese J-Pop artist who started her singing career at the age of 13. Out of all the anime projects you have been involved in, which is the most enjoyable/interesting? ELISA: I would say “The World God Only Knows” as I had spent two days and about 16 hours to record the entire song. It was the first time that I needed to spend such a long time in recording. It is a nineminute-long song in five chapters and it’s all in English. Furthermore, I had to change my voice and singing style for each chapter. It’s because the main character in the anime, Sebastian is very cool and I’m always excited whenever he appears. Mami Kawada: I wouldn’t know how to choose an all-time favourite anime from all the anime projects that I have been involved in. But if it’s outside of my anime projects, I would choose “Dragon Ball” because I have been in love with it since young.

e LOVE the combination of eggs and breakfast! But we are also aware that most of us have hectic schedules, leaving us little time in the morning to make and prepare a decent breakfast. Or let’s just admit it, we’d rather not spend hours in the kitchen since the gravity around our beds is always stronger in the morning. Well, we hear you! This month, we got our hands on a simple recipe that will certainly satisfy your grumbling tummy without having to lose your morning Zen. Best part of all? It’s the perfect recipe for those who aren’t fans of cooking. Trust us, we have tried it ourselves and the end result is simply delightful!

What you need:

Slice the crusts and the corners off the breads. Set aside. 74

Six slices of bread (we opted for whole-wheat for better texture). Six eggs Ham (sliced into small pieces) – Chicken or beef? Your call. Cheese (shredded or pieces) Two to three tablespoons of butter or margarine (melted) Salt Pepper Muffin Pan Rolling Pin

With a rolling pin, flatten bread slices slightly. Now, using a basting brush, gently brush the melted butter on the muffin molds to grease the surface.

[Tips] 1.

Opt for bigger breads. Otherwise, you can always fit in two breads to a single mold.

Try not to rip the pieces of bread when you are placing the slices in the molds. If necessary, fold in one or more of the sides to get a perfect fit.

Preheat oven to 190 degree Celsius for about five to 10 minutes.

Depending on the size of the molds of your muffin tray, pick the size of your

eggs accordingly (we opted for smaller sized eggs). 4.

If you are not a fan of slimy eggs, tightly cover the entire tray with aluminum foil for a good five minutes and the eggs will continue to cook. So, fret not! Even if the egg whites aren’t completely set, it will be after the wrap.

If you roll your breads thin enough, there shouldn’t be overflowing from the eggs.

Bake them at 190 degree Celsius for five minutes until they are golden brown. Remove from oven. h

Time to bake! Place your breakfast tray at 190 degree Celsius for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, place and shape the sliced breads to fit the bottom of the muffin molds. Once you filled up the tray, brush the interior of the breads in the cups with melted butter for a crisp and crunchy texture!

Next, add in about three slices of ham (or bacon if you are a meat lover) and pieces of cheese (as much as you please) to all the cups.

Remove from oven and gently use a spoon to scoop each breakfast cup out.

Prep time? 10 minutes. Cooking time? 25 minutes. Yes peeps, in only 35 minutes we made the perfect breakfast (of six servings, mind you) without any fuss. How can you resist those cute servings of heaven in a cup? Crunchy toast, creamy eggs and overflowing cheese, tell us what is not to love! Make your very own “go go power breakfast” today!

Here’s the fun part! Crack an egg into each of the cups and then season with salt and pepper.

ny RPG lover would know about the ‘Baldur’s Gate’ franchise. For many, the ‘Baldur’s Gate’ franchise was a way to explore the expansive lore of the Dungeons & Dragons universe. More importantly however, it gave them a way to escape the boredom of everyday life and delve into an interactive adventure that had as many secrets as a single season of ‘Game of Thrones’. If you didn’t yet know, ‘Pillars of Eternity’ is the work of many of the same people who brought you the original ‘Baldur’s Gate’ series. To this effect, ‘Pillars of Eternity’ is somewhat seen as the spiritual successor to the series. This is evident in many of the game’s elements, including gameplay, storytelling, and even presentation. Like any respectable RPG, ‘Pillars of Eternity’ starts off with you creating your character. There are six races, and a whopping 11 different classes to choose from in this game. Needless to say, you’ll have to choose wisely, as every choice will affect how NPCs interact with your avatar and also determine what dialogue options are available to you throughout the game. Once you’ve got your avatar customised to your liking, it’s safe to say that you’ll be bidding a healthy chunk of your weekly life away, at least for the next couple of months. In terms of storyline, you take on the role of a “Watcher”, someone who’s able to converse with souls. This remains a core element throughout the game, as you use your newfound powers to solve mysteries, embark on more adventures, and most importantly, determine your own fate. What’s great (or unfortunate, depending on how you see it) about the storyline, is the fact that about 70% of this storyline is presented via text. Personally, this gives me the freedom to imagine the ongoings in my head, but if you’re not one who loves to read, choosing instead to skip most of the dialogue, a large amount of intricate lore will likely be lost on you. As for gameplay, ‘Pillars of Eternity’ plays very much like the ‘Baldur’s Gate’ and ‘Icewind Dale’ series. The devs made use of the same game engine used in those two games, which is called the Infinity Engine. With this engine in place, ‘Pillars of Eternity’ stays true to its roots, with an isometric view and tactical pause gameplay. Think of it as a sort of turn-based and real-time hybrid, if you’re still confused. In short, ‘Pillars of Eternity’ is definitely a game you should get, especially if you’re an RPG fan. The game is slightly difficult, but if you can weather through it, you’ll be rewarded with a truly epic virtual adventure.

t was truly a week of fun for five universities last month, as Chu Lip organised its roadshow across five different venues. The campuses where the roadshows were held include UTAR Sungai Long, Nilai University, TAR University College in Setapak, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, as well as at INTI International University in Nilai. Among the fun activities held during the roadshows include games such as ‘Ping Pong Toss’ and ‘Ring Toss’, where students stood a chance of winning plenty of prizes that range from mugs to candy! Apart from that, there was also a fun photo booth set up at the roadshows, where everyone was given the opportunity to take selfies and take home printouts of those photos. Of course, Chu Lip lip balms were sold there, at a discounted price of RM15 instead of its original retail price of RM25.90! Perhaps the most interesting activity during the roadshow though, was the Chu Lip Facebook competition, where several lucky winners walked home with a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 each. Held from the 24th of March till the 13th of May, the Casio Uni Tour 2015 is a great opportunity for students to better understand the many products from Casio, as a number of the company’s products are being showcased during the roadshows. Locations of the roadshows include TAR UC, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, Sunway University, INTI International College Subang and UCSI. A contest called the ‘Casio Let’s Enjoy Selfie Contest’ was organised and the winners will walk home with a brand-new Casio Exilim ZR 1500.
