A Rewarding Celebration For FIA Graduates

KLMUC And Cosmopoint College Of Technology’s Convocation! Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan College University (KLMUC) and Cosmopoint College of Technology (Cosmopoint), two education arms under the Cosmopoint Group of Companies, held their 6th and 19th convocations, respectively, at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre recently. A total of 1,813 graduates at the diploma and degree levels received their scrolls. The ceremony was graced by Cosmopoint Group of Companies chief executive officer En. Hizwani Hassan, KLMUC acting vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahmad Hairi Abu Bakar and Cosmopoint Colleges chief executive En. Izz Al-Din Maslan. The large number of high-calibre students and high employability rate is a testament to the quality of KLMUC’s and Cosmopoint’s programmes. So far, more than 100,000 students have graduated since 1995. Among the 1,813 who graduated this year, 322 received degrees and 1,483 received diplomas. Also present at the convocation were representatives from Ekuiti Nasional Berhad (Ekuinas) board of directors, presidents and vice chancellors of other Ekuinas’ institutions of higher learning, KLMUC’s and Cosmopoint’s management committee and senate, as well as academics.

BREAKING GROUND: AS THE GUEST-OF-HONOUR, DATO’ DR ZAMBRY LED THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR UCSI EDUCATION GROUP’S NEW CAMPUSES IN EDUCITY SERI ISKANDAR, PERAK
UCSI Education Group (UCSI) marked its major entry into the Perak education scene with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new UCSI University campus, a UCSI International School and a branch of its Le Quadri boutique hotel. These will be built in one of Perak’s most ambitious initiatives, EduCity Seri Iskandar, that boasts a gross development value of RM2 billion and covers an area of over 300 acres. Coming in as the anchor brand for this education township underscores UCSI’s commitment in supporting Perak’s aim of becoming a leading education hub in Malaysia and subsequently providing its people world-class education. This commitment is acknowledged by Y.A.B Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry B Abd. Kadir, the Chief Minister of Perak, who officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony. In his speech, he also pointed out that as one of Malaysia’s first private tertiary education providers, UCSI’s reputation and international experience will play an important role in furthering the state’s education offerings. Around 40% of UCSI University’s student population comes from over 80 countries and its international schools are staffed by experienced foreign educators. UCSI’s decision to enter the Perak education scene is well in line with its track record of driving transformation projects. Significantly, it leads the Education Entry Point Project 10, better known as EPP10, to revamp Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality industry sector through education. UCSI has also been given the mandate by Education EPP 8 to establish a healthcare education cluster in Bandar Springhill, Port Dickson. 10

It was a rainy and hazy morning yet it did not dampen the spirits of Sunway College Foundation in Arts (FIA) programme graduates who joyfully celebrated their year-long hard work. FIA celebrated many exceptional achievements among the 12th batch of graduates. Foo Hui Shee and Foo Hui Sze scored more than 90% in their overall pre-university studies. The fraternal twins received full scholarships to continue their BSc Actuarial Science programme in Sunway University. “We chose to continue with Sunway University because of the amazing experience we had in FIA,” said Foo Hui Shee. Foo Hui Sze added that she was instead motivated by her parents and influenced by her sister to pursue the same degree here. Hui Shee also received the Vice-Chancellor Subject Award, together with Wong Jing Yi, Lee Hui Shing, Leong Wei Zhun, Kong Ai Ching, Jason Tan Yie Jiat, Pang Li Anne, Wee Sue Ann, Cheah Chun Ching and Kelwin Tan Seen Tiong. These recipients were rewarded for achieving the highest scores in specific subjects. Ko Chia Huey and Dickson Pua Kah Wai received the Special Award of Achievement for showing exemplary academic improvement and great leadership skills since the start of the programme. The Foundation in Arts is one of five pre-university programmes offered at Sunway College. Other pre-university programmes include the Australian Matriculation Programme, Cambridge GCE A-Level Programme, Canadian International Matriculation Programme and Monash University Foundation Year. TEAM NAMTOR JUBILANT AFTER WINNING THE UAV SISWA CHALLENGE 2013-2014
After one year of challenging preparation, building, performing system integration and testing, the eight teams who flew their self-made hexacopters in the final competition last month were feted at the UAV Siswa Challenge prize giving ceremony. Universiti Teknologi MARA’s Team Namtor, comprising of four mechanical engineering students, took top honours and in the process won a one week study tour in France. This was the only team that successfully completed all missions during the final competition. Their study tour will cover an experiential visit to the Virtual Reality Centre (VRC) and the Immersive Reality Centre (IRC) of Dassault Aviation in Paris, and thereafter, a walkthrough of the civil and military aircraft final assembly lines in Bordeaux. Team Namtor will also be the pride of Malaysia when it pits its hexacopter against four other teams from France in a UAV challenge in Paris. Dassault Aviation’s representative and Rafale Program Director for Malaysia Daniel Fremont said, “We are delighted to see such quality Malaysian students who demonstrated their knowledge, capabilities and determination to achieve the set goal of flying their UAV autonomously. We committed a period of over a year to this challenge with the universities and our local partners, to enable the students to gain hands-on experience similar to a real-life commercial project. The result has been outstanding.”

Leading pre-university education provider, Taylor’s College, has once again proven its track record of producing high achievers when 11 of its students received acceptance into the world’s top three universities - Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard University. “We are very proud indeed to see our students achieving their goal of entering the university of their choice. Sharyn Wong Yi Jien, who has been accepted into Cambridge University, expressed her excitement in progressing into the next phase of her student life. Fellow Cambridge University bound student Jason Too Yip Jee admitted he knew where he wanted to study from the beginning. He said he enrolled in Taylor’s College not only to get into Cambridge but for the wholesome student life experience. Eleasha Chew completes the group of 11 Malaysian students bound for the top three universities in the world. She is the latest Malaysian to be accepted into Harvard University in three years. Stepping up efforts to intensify practical learning for its accountancy students, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with three partners; Ngage Advisory PLT (Ngage), YGL Convergence Berhad (YGL), and McMillan Woods, to strengthen co-operation in educating and organising accountancy software courses using YGL TAXcom Office in the field of accountancy. Attending the exchange ceremony as the guest of honour was YBhg Dato’ Ir. Donald Lim Siang Chai, while representing UTAR was its president YBhg Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik. The MoU signatories were Ngage Advisory PLT managing partner Leong Kah Mun, YGL Convergence Bhd CEO Yeap Kong Chean and McMillan Woods managing partner YBhg Dato’ Raymond Liew Lee Leong. Also present as witness of the MoU for UTAR was the Dean of Faculty of Business and Finance Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong. The MoU exchange showcases UTAR’s continuous efforts in collaborating with industry partners so that its students are educated and trained to be industry relevant and ready for the workforce upon graduation. The MoU provides the relevant practical training for UTAR students in the Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) and the Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) to gain experience in using the industry relevant tax-related software termed as ‘YGL TAXcom Software’ even before graduating. 12

The UCSI Scholars’ (U-SchoS) Club – formed by UCSI University Trust Scholarship recipients hosted the U-SchoS’ Leadership Lecture Series (ULLS) 2014 from 29th to 31st March, and 31st May. Themed, ‘Developing the Leader in U’, ULLS featured a roster of distinguished speakers who shared their expertise on leadership at the three-day event, which was aimed at inculcating strong leadership values among young leaders in the country. The speakers included Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, a writer and social activist; Mr Alvin Ung, author of Barefoot Leadership; Mr Roshan Tiran, CEO of Leaderonomics; and Mr Warren Chant, Consultant (Learning & Growth) of UCSI Leadership Development Centre, among others. According to UCSI University trust chairman (Board of Trustees) Datuk (Dr) Hj. Mohd. Karim Hj. Abdullah Omar, the lecture is aimed at enhancing the students’ leadership skills. By providing precocious students with myriad opportunities for personal and professional development through events and activities, the trust demonstrated a strong commitment to enhance access to higher education and improve the lives of the community. The leadership lecture also saw an exclusive award – Malaysia’s Top 10 Most Inspiring and Young Personalities Award – being presented to prominent corporate leaders, industry leaders or community champions on 31st May, the final part of the series for the year. Among the nominees for the award included Malaysian professional badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei and The Zariff Intiative founder Muhammad Zhariff Affandi.

ACCA Teams Up With FutureLearn
To Provide Free Online Courses The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the first professional accountancy body to sponsor massive open online courses (MOOCs) on FutureLearn’s social learning platform for professional recognition. The global body for professional accountants will work with FutureLearn’s world-renowned university partners to make cutting-edge learning content in the fields of accountancy, finance and business, available to FutureLearn’s international learner base, online, free of charge. The course will receive professional accreditation from ACCA, granting exemption for paper F1 (Accountant in Business) of the ACCA qualification. This will provide learners who fully participate and pass the associated exam with an opportunity to continue on a journey to ACCA membership and a rewarding career in finance. The first MOOC to be launched as a result of this collaboration will be called Discovering Business in Society, developed by academics at the University of Exeter. Launching on FutureLearn in September 2014, the course is aimed at anyone interested in learning the principles of business, including prospective undergraduate students, working professionals without a background in business and anyone interested in entering the finance profession or seeking a route to ACCA membership. A group of third year students, studying the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in International Hospitality Management at Sunway University, went on a week-long study trip to Seoul, South Korea. The February trip was planned as part of their assignment for the Strategic Management module where they are required to conduct field work research and data collection throughout the trip. During the trip, the group was hosted by the Daelim University College. They visited Dongdaemun Market, a large commercial district comprising traditional markets and shopping centres in Seoul, 63 City, a 63-floor building with spectacular view of Seoul, and the Korean Folk Village, a tourist attraction exhibiting Korean culture and history. The group spent one night at the Oak Valley Ski Resort, located at Gangwon-do. While having fun with skiing, the students also observed and experienced the daily business operations on the resort. This study trip is the fifth so far for the programme and the first trip visiting a city beyond South East Asia, after Bali, Cambodia, Vietnam and Chiang Mai. These trips are planned and arranged to enable students to attain practical exposure and learning experience. They met various industry experts and attended a cooking lesson by Chef Kim Taehyun, who specialises in Korean cuisine. The experience is then brought into the classroom for further discussion to enhance students’ learning experience at Sunway University.

4th Short Film Competition The short film competition is an initiative to provide Malaysian youths aged 18 to 25 with a platform to express their creativity by producing positive and inspiring stories through short films based on selected themes. To Hit The Silver Screens
‘Gotham’ To Show A World Before Batman After the recent TV success of another DC character in Arrow, Fox and WBTV believe the time is right to strike with a pre-Batman series named Gotham. Gotham is an upcoming American television series created by Bruno Heller, based on characters appearing in and published by DC Comics, specifically those of Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne, who were created by Bob Kane, and others in DC’s Batman franchise. The series will star Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon. Heller serves as executive producer on the project along with Danny Cannon, who will also direct the pilot. Gotham received a series order from Fox in May and is scheduled to premiere in the 2014–15 television season.The trailer begins by intoning, “I love this city” and “I won’t let it fall apart without a fight,” as the pulse of ‘Inception’-esque music propels us through the requisite narrative checkpoints. The trailer ends with Gordon promising Bruce that “There will be light” - a direct winkto-the-viewer to the boy’s future life as Gotham superhero shrouded in darkness. As originally conceived, the series would have served as a straightforward story of Gordon’s early days on the Gotham City Police force. The idea evolved not only to include the Bruce Wayne character, but will also tell the origin stories of several Batman villains, including the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, Two-Face, the Joker and Poison Ivy.

Enjoy action adventure? Like horror? Like Spielberg? Well, you’ve just won the jackpot. A live-action film adaptation of Fatal Frame or ‘Zero(零)’ as it is known in Japan, Tecmo’s hit horror game that sold 1.3 million copies, has been green-lit. Mari Asato (Bilocation) is directing the film, and principal photography began in March. Nakajō made her acting debut in the 2012 live-action television series, ‘Kuro no Onna Kyōshi’ (Black Female Teacher), and Fatal Frame will be her film debut. She acknowledged the pressure she feels due to this, and said that she uses it to strive hard in the daily shoots. Ayami Nakajō and Aoi Morikawa, two popular models in the Japanese magazine Seventeen, are starring in this film. Fatal Frame features female protagonists navigating creepy Japanese villages and mansions, haunted by g-g-ghosts! What sets this game apart from other survival-horror games is that instead of running from the ghosts, you have to face your fears head on by taking pictures of them with the ‘Camera Obscura’, a camera with the power to banish the ghosts you take pictures of. The most powerful way to banish a ghost is to take a picture of it right before it tries to kill you, hence the name of the series, Fatal Frame. The original game debuted on the Sony PlayStation 2 console in 2001 and it spawned several sequels and remakes on multiple platforms.

Beyoncé (Again) Of course Jay Z and Beyoncé managed to have the cutest moment of the entire 2014 Met Gala. We all know the 44-year-old rapper put a ring on it a long time ago but when Beyoncé aka Queen Bey lost a piece of bling at Monday’s Met Gala, her husband was there on bended knee to help. Jay Z added some charm to picking up the lost jewel from the red carpet by staging an adorable mock proposal to his wife of six years for the cameras. Queen Bey, 32, who stunned in a crystal-studded custom Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci dress, flashed a huge smile as Jay put the ring back on her finger. The couple was among several of the stars that showed up at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s lavish affair alongside their famous other half. Manchester United’s Moyes Sacked
Manchester United manager David Moyes has been sacked, only 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson. His dismissal was announced shortly after a meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at the club’s training ground. Earlier, United had refused to comment on newspaper reports that Moyes, who left Everton to sign a six-year deal with the Premier League champions, would be sacked before the end of the season. Coaches Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden have also left their posts, but goalkeeping coach Chris Woods and first-team coach Phil Neville will remain with the club for the rest of the season. Moyes, 50, was chosen by Ferguson to succeed him when he retired after 26 years in charge last summer. United, who lie seventh in the table at the end of this season, have recorded their lowest points tally in the Premier League having struggled at Old Trafford in particular this season. Under Moyes, they have lost seven league games at home, been beaten in the FA Cup by Swansea at Old Trafford and were unable to prevent Sunderland from defeating them in the Capital One Cup semi-finals. United said player-coach Ryan Giggs will take charge until a permanent appointment can be made as it has been said that he’s not under consideration for the role on a full-time basis.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have had it with unruly fans. This season, football matches around the country seem to be plagued with incident after incident involving hooliganism. The latest one was on Monday when about 2,000 Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) fans reportedly blocked all exits of the Larkin Stadium for two hours to prevent Pahang fans from leaving after the FA Cup semi-final first-leg match ended in a 1-1 draw. Four football fans were detained following the stand-off between JDT supporters and the police. In Johor Baru, Johor Football Association (JFA) president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim expressed disappointment at the incident. “This is not part of the Johor tradition or culture and it is important for us to be mature about it. If this hostility among rival fans continues then football in the country will never grow,” he said. FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said the national football body have taken several measures to tackle hooliganism which has infected the M-League. He added that FAM are now looking at taking a harsher stand including making the teams play behind closed doors. In February, FAM launched a ‘Love Football, Stop Hooliganism’ campaign, aimed at stemming the spread of football violence in the M-League. attooing has been practised for centuries in many cultures, particularly in Asia, and has spread throughout the world. The practice is popular in many parts of the world, in our neighbouring countries too.
CHINA In ancient China, tattoos were considered a barbaric practice. Tattoos, however, have often been referenced in literature, depicting bandits and folk heroes. As late as the Qing Dynasty, it was common practice to tattoo characters such as ‘prisoner’ on convicted criminals’ faces. Although relatively rare during most periods of the Chinese history, slaves were also sometimes marked to display ownership.
EGYPT AND INDIA In Southern India, permanent tattoos are called ‘Pachakutharathu’. In northern India, permanent tattoos are known as ‘Godna’. Tattoos have been used as cultural symbols among many tribal populations, as well as the caste-based Hindu population in India. Henna or Mehndi was popular in ancient India and ancient Egypt, and still remains popular today in the Indian subcontinent, Middle East and North Africa. In Egypt the majority of tattoos were found on females. It would tell you the status of a particular individual. They also had tattoos for healing, religion and as a form of punishment.

JAPAN Between 1720 and 1870 criminals were tattooed as a visible mark of punishment; this actually replaced having ears and noses removed. It was eventually abolished by the ‘Meiji’ government who banned the art of tattooing, viewing it as barbaric and lacking respectability. This created a subculture of criminals and outcasts, many of whom were the old Samurai warriors. These people had no place in ‘decent society’ and were frowned upon. They couldn’t integrate into the mainstream society because of their tattoos, forcing many of them into criminal activities which ultimately formed the roots for the modern Japanese mafia, the Yakuza.
PHILIPPINES Tattooing has been a part of Filipino life since pre-Hispanic colonisation of the Philippine Islands. Tattooing in the Philippines to some was a form of rank and accomplishment, some believed that tattoos had magical qualities. The more famous tattooed indigenous people of the Philippines were in the area of North Luzon, especially among the Igorot group of Bontoc, Kalinga and Ifugao peoples.
NEW ZEALAND The Māori people of New Zealand practised a form of tattooing known as Tā moko. In the colonial period, Tā moko fell out of use, partly because of the European practice of collecting Mokomokai, or tattooed heads. JUNE 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

TAIWAN In Taiwan, facial tattoos of the Atayal tribe are called ‘ptasan’. They are used to demonstrate that an adult man can protect his homeland and that an adult woman is qualified to weave cloth and perform housekeeping. People with strong tattoo traditions have indicated that this tradition came from their ancestors in Taiwan and some Taiwanese tribes still practice it until today.
MALAYSIA There are many cultures in the world that use tattoos and body decoration, and the Iban tradition is certainly one of the best developed and interesting. In the past, most adult members of the Iban tribe from Borneo were tattooed. Most of them who were heavily tattooed were the ‘Iban Rangers’ who fought heavily-armed Japanese soldiers during World War II armed only with their Mandau swords, blowguns and spears. Their tattoos were more than just mere decorations, each had its own story. Each was incredible and the elements and meanings were all connected. However, after World War II, missionary work in Malaysian Borneo almost succeeded in wiping out the tattooing tradition as tattoos were viewed as paganistic and their wearers as primitive and undesirable (in marriage). 40

There was a point in time when getting a tattoo doesn’t just mean that you have an indelible mark of your awesome personality on your body, it also means that people are constantly judging you for it. Tattoos have experienced a revival in popularity in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe, Japan, and North and South America. The growth in tattoo culture has seen an influx of new artists in the industry, many having technical and fine arts training. Coupled with advancements in tattoo pigments and the ongoing refinement of the equipment used for tattooing, this has led to an improvement in the quality of tattoos being produced. Formal interest in the art of the tattoo became prominent in the 1970s and continued through to the 21st century. During the 2000s, the presence of tattoos became evident within pop culture; inspiring television shows such as A&E’s ‘Inked’ and TLC’s ‘Miami Ink’ and ‘LA Ink’. In addition, tattoos have become more acceptable in recent years, thanks in part to the exposure by celebrities such as:

To that effect, tattoos or tattooing is no longer considered a form of rebellion but instead just another way of creative expression. The only difference is that the body is used as a canvas and the subject will carry the art to his/her grave.

ALL A TATTOO VIRGIN NEEDS TO KNOW
G
etting your first tattoo can be an intimidating process, especially if you haven’t done your research. Once you settle on a design, you still have to figure out where to get it, who should do it, what precautions to take and how to care for it. If you’re wary of needles or pain, the process becomes much more complicated. Here are some things you need to know beforehand to take some sting out of getting your first tattoo.
1 CHOOSE CAREFULLY Don’t get a tattoo thinking that it can be removed later in life. Tattoos, by definition, are meant to be permanent. If you haven’t decided on a design for your tattoo, it’s best to choose something that holds a personal meaning or work with an artist to create an entirely original artwork. Choose a design that speaks to you in some way. Even if you choose a universal symbol, make sure that it speaks to you.

2 ‘SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT’ Not all artists and tattoo shops are created equal so you’ll have to do a research on tattoo parlours and tattoo artists. The internet can be a useful tool, but you should also be visiting shops first-hand. It’s also important to inquire about the certifications at a potential tattoo shop. Keep an eye out for hygienic tattooing practices. Tattoo needles and inks should be disposable and one-timeuse only. If you see something that indicates otherwise, head for the door.

3 EAT/DRINK WELL BEFORE Essentially, you want your skin to be ready for your new ink, and that means eating right and getting a good night’s rest. This is because a tattoo causes trauma to the body so you and your immune system should be in tip-top shape. The night before your appointment, it will be good to stick to a relatively healthy diet. Alcohol, for instance, should be avoided or strictly limited as it can increase bleeding. Also, avoid overly processed, salty or sugary foods because sodium nitrates and sugar can increase inflammation and swelling.

OF COURSE IT’LL HURT!
Really, it all depends on your pain threshold. Different people feel and react differently to pain. After the tattooing process is done, however, you can expect your skin to be red and sore for a while. Your tattoo might feel like an itchy sunburn for several days after the procedure, sometimes even oozing pus and blood. But don’t worry; your tattoo artist will fill you in on the aftercare because it’s imperative to let your skin repair itself (it usually takes about three to four weeks) after a tattoo.

5 REMOVAL IS POSSIBLE Lasers are the most common method of tattoo removal but it’s neither easy nor cheap. What it does is it delivers very short pulses of high intensity light into the treated area. The other alternative is to cover a tattoo with another tattoo, though you should look for someone who has the specific experience in drawing over tattoos as not all artists are skilled in this particular craft. But to avoid going through the hassle, just get step one i.e. choose carefully, done right!

We took a chance and grilled our friend, Julian Oh, on the matter of tattoos and tattooing, to which he gladly obliged. ampus+: Hi, Julian. Thanks so much for taking the time to speak to us. Please tell us a little bit more about yourself. Julian: Hi. I am a tattooer and a photographer, born and bred in KL. I run a private tattoo studio in Subang Jaya. I have been tattooing for about five and a half years now and besides just tattooing in Malaysia, I frequently travel to Europe to work in other studios as a guest artist and also at tattoo conventions. C+: What’s your background i.e. career and when did you first started tattooing? J: Before tattooing, I was an art director in a motion graphics house, and prior to that I worked in print publication. I stumbled upon tattooing purely by chance and out of curiosity. I did a small tattoo on myself under the eyes of my former colleagues and mentors (who were also the tattooers I went to for my tattoos) and have never looked back since. Tattooing gives me this ‘job satisfaction’ that I’ve never had before in the work that I did previously. C+: Do you remember your first tattoo? Tell us about it! J: I got my first tattoo at the age of 21; it was a bleeding eye which I have covered up with another tattoo. C+: Personally, how many tattoos do you currently have and which ones are your favourites? And why? J: You stop counting after five and personally, it isn’t about how many tattoos you have. I don’t have any particular favourite tattoos, most of them were done by tattooers whom I respect and I like all of them in their own ways.
J: I’ve tattooed clients who want to memorialise loved ones who have passed away or the birth of a loved one. Sometimes it could be about personal beliefs. C+: On the flipside, tell us about some of your worst experiences as a tattoo artist. J: Sure, there are first-time clients who are naturally anxious, and sometimes borderline indecisive and sometimes the process takes a lot longer and a little more reassurance but when clients do not trust you and play the ‘artist’, then things start getting uncomfortable. I think clients should do more research on their artist, have a look at the kind of work they do and make a more informed decision when choosing one. C+: What are some of the other challenges that you face as a tattoo artist in Malaysia? J: I think it will take a little time for the industry to grow, as we are a relatively young scene here. We are definitely seeing more tattooers surfacing, so the next step would be to see the quality of work elevating as a whole. C+: Last, but not least, impart some wise words for the young ones out there who are vying for their first tattoo. J: Make informed decisions when choosing your tattooer, look through his portfolio to see if he/she is the artist for you. Visit him/her to see if you are comfortable, ask questions, make sure the studio is hygienic and do not choose to get tattooed for the cheapest price.
C+: They say that there’s still this taboo about tattoos though. How far do you think the art has come since its early beginnings? What were some of the common misconceptions? J: I think tattooing has become much more mainstream in Malaysia now, and it isn’t so much a taboo or a social stigma as compared to before when people think that only bad guys get tattooed. As people get more educated, they are able to accept it in a more rational manner, and little by little there is more respect for the craft of tattooing. C+: Do you think that tattoos are more acceptable in Malaysia now? J: Yes, tattoos are much more accepted in Malaysia now. Most people would compliment my tattoos. I don’t think I’ve ever been shunned or criticised for them. C+: They say tattoos should carry a personal meaning for the ‘bearer’. Can you remember some of the more meaningful tattoos that you’ve done for your clients?

he fact is, irresponsible social media conduct could potentially ruin your education and negatively impact your career, not to mention hurt others in the process. The same way you should have manners and courtesy when speaking to people in real life, it should also be applied when you use Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Allow us to be your social media police. Here are some classic social media mistakes to avoid:
AIRING YOUR DIRTY LAUNDRY IN PUBLIC We’ve all said and done things we regret. It’s human nature to react without thinking through the consequences. However, take a moment to imagine how your social media posts will affect the feelings, safety and well-being of those around you — even your worst enemies. Posting an angry tweet in the heat of the moment may feel liberating, but the momentary pleasure you get from writing it isn’t worth the potential harm it could create. If it’s not something you’d do in real life, why do it on social media?
SOME THINGS ARE BETTER LEFT CONFIDENTIAL This piece of advice goes to every social media user, not just students. But young people are especially vulnerable to online predators and identity thieves. For example, be extra mindful with what you post, whether it’s your student ID or your class schedule. We get that you’re excited to share the info with your family and friends but things like that might come complete with your address, full name, birthday and all other personal information. Why make your details readily available to hackers and identity thieves?
“DO I WANT MY FAMILY TO SEE THIS?” So what if you’ve changed your privacy settings for the post? That doesn’t mean that your mom, dad, your cousins or your future employer, for that matter, will not see what you posted. Privacy settings are just that: settings. There’s an enormous difference between privacy settings and privacy guarantees. Assume that nothing you post online has a privacy guarantee. Do you still want it out there?
SHARING YOUR LOCATION ALL DAY EVERYDAY Try not to get too specific with your social check-ins i.e. location tagging. Although your parents may appreciate the heads-up, especially if you’re living away from home, posts like these make it easy for predators to locate you. More importantly, don’t check in on social media when you’re by yourself and/or in a remote location. Why would you want to put a crosshair on yourself and let people know that you’re an easy target?
BULLYING IS NOT COOL! When a student turns to social media, blogs or virtually any online space as a forum for hurtful speech, the risks are immeasurable. Vicious treatment and hateful words between students often leads to violence, suicide, depression and discrimination among students. Bullying doesn’t just apply to student-to-student interactions. There are students who speak poorly of their teachers too. Believe it or not, some of your professors/tutors hold the keys to the next great internship or job announcement. Remember, bullying is a serious issue. If you don’t like being bullied, don’t bully.
PUBLIC PROFILES THAT ARE ALL PARTY & NO POTENTIAL Whether you’re a recent college grad looking for your first job or a first year student, your social media presence must reflect responsibility. When evaluating potential employees, some employers have no qualms in doing a virtual search on you to take a look at what’s publicly visible on your Facebook profile. If you’ve got pictures of yourself drunk, indecently dressed or in a questionable pose, you’ve just redflagged yourself and there’s a high chance that your job application will get rejected, no questions asked.
LYING/CHEATING TO GET OUT OF WORK So you have that paper due but your favourite band is in town to play at a concert. Luckily, you managed you convince your professor/tutor to give you an extension for your assignment so that you can ‘go back to your hometown’. Of course, that’s a lie. You’re not really back at your hometown. You’re at the concert; you post a status update on Facebook, check in at Foursquare and upload a picture or a video on Instagram. Believe us when we say that someone’s bound to see it, if not your professor/ tutor, and tell on you. Don’t be surprised if you have to retake the entire subject all because you wanted to see one concert. Last but not least, there’s a reason why the ‘THINK’ acronym is so useful. Make sure that everything you want to say or do on any social media platform passes the ‘THINK’ test: • T - Is it true? • H - Is it helpful? • I - Is it inspiring? • N - Is it necessary? • K - Is it kind? Body art is an art which uses oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body as a canvas. How? Imagine water colours of the traditional art being replaced by just about anything which can stick or stay on the body such as paint, spray, tattoos, piercings, etc.

he art has become so socially acceptable that it’s almost like a new fashion craze. Most people use it as a way to express oneself or a way to display one’s devotion to a certain cause/another person. Body art is quite literally the voice of the body, of one’s mind and of one’s desire in an unspoken manner. Believe it or not, it has even become a sub category of performance art, in which artists use or sometimes ‘abuse’ their own body to make statements. Whether it’s for liberation, rebellion, fashion, a sense of belonging or just for fun, body art is a fast growing trend that shows no signs of stopping yet. These are the different types of body art, with some being exceptionally painful:
ANOTHER PERMANENT TYPE OF ART IS CALLED SCARIFICATION. THIS INVOLVES ETCHING, SCRATCHING, OR SOME SORT OF SUPERFICIAL INCISION OR CUTTING AS A PERMANENT BODY MODIFICATION. DURING THIS PROCESS, SCARS CAN FORM BY CUTTING THE SKIN
PIERCINGS These maybe temporary or permanent, though usually these are temporary. Piercing is to make a needle-sized hole in your body to attach a stud type item to it, like earrings are worn on pierced ears. You may pierce almost any part of your body, though it may be quite painful to pierce certain parts of the body. Make sure you use high quality studs to avoid getting bruises and infections.
BODY PAINT This is a temporary form of art which involves painting colours on one’s own body. Any design can be made using a multitude of colours. Sparkles and glitters can also be added. It can be face painting or body painting, generally over a large part of the body. A type of fluorescent body paint is also available these days. Care should be taken to choose only non-toxic paints and make sure that there is no allergic reaction to the paint.
TATTOO A tattoo is a form of body art, which requires inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. This is usually painful. It can
be permanent or temporary. Another type of tattoo (which is always temporary) is the sticker type; you get a sticker (called a decal) with a pre-made design, put it on your hand, slightly wet it, and then pull it. The design from the sticker stays on your hand. It’s a non-painful alternative to tattoos. Another alternative is the ballpoint pen tattoos which are washable. Some permanent tattoos can be removed by laser techniques, but this is far more painful than applying them in the first place, plus costly too.
SCARIFICATION A n o t h e r permanent type of art is called scarification. This involves etching, scratching, or some sort of superficial incision or cutting as a permanent body modification. One can etch pictures, words or designs on the skin. During this process, scars can form by cutting the skin. Ouch!
IMPLANTS Implants may be subdermal (refers to a kind of body jewelery that is placed underneath the skin, therefore allowing the body to heal over the implant and create a raised design) or transdermal (an object placed partially below and partially above the skin, and it generally heals like in piercing). In the context of body modification, some may consider silicone injections and other substances as types of implants too. Some types of implants may be performed by doctors or other medical professionals, while others may be performed by body modification artists.
BRANDING Branding is a permanent type of body art in which a mark (usually a symbol or pattern) is burnt onto the skin, with the intention of creating a scar. This is performed using hot or very cold branding iron.

With the price of petrol going up at a rapid rate and the impending (rumoured) toll hike lurking around the corner, the last thing you need is to break your bank spending on automotive-related expenses.
A
lthough some seasonal car maintenance will require the assistance of a qualified car mechanic, here are some simple do-it-yourself car maintenance projects to make your car better prepared for your journey and at the same time save you the labour cost (that’s a lot of money!) by having these services done by a mechanic.
Air Filter
Easy Peasy Cost-Savvy Ways
To Keep Your Car Happy!
Air Filter Changing the air filter on your car will take about ten minutes and will only cost you the price of a new filter, which usually runs around RM40 – RM100 (depending on the brand and type of car).

Pop open your hood and locate the air filter in your car (typically housed within a black case with metal clips on either side).
Open the case and look at how the old filter sits inside of it. By making note of this, you will have an easier time putting the new filter in. Remove the old filter, while making sure nothing falls into the bottom of the filter box.
Put the new filter in, close the case, and secure it with the metal clips.
Oil/ Oil Filter
Oil/Oil Filter First and foremost, do not change your oil when it is hot! If you change it while it is hot, you may get burned. It takes about 45 minutes to change your own oil and will cost around RM80 (the price of oil and a new filter).

Make sure your car is on level ground so that you can safely jack up your car.
Locate the oil pan under your car and unscrew the drain plug to drain the old oil. Be sure you drain the oil into a recycling container so that you can recycle the old oil at your nearest full service gas station. Then replace the drain plug. Locate your oil filter and use an oil filter wrench to remove the filter. Be careful as some old oil would still be on the filter. Make sure the rubber gasket on the old filter comes off with the filter. Lubricate the rubber gasket on the new filter, then fill up the new oil filter about 2/3 full with the new oil.
Screw the new filter into place as tightly as you can without stripping the threads.
Pop your hood, remove the oil cap, and fill your engine with new oil using a filter. Use a dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough oil.
Put the oil cap back on and you are done!

Windshield Wipers Replacing your windshield wipers is another simple maintenance task you can do on your own in about 10 minutes. It only costs about RM30 – RM60 (the price of new wipers). Here’s how to do it:

Brake Pads Installing new brake pads can be a little more complicated and may take up to an hour to complete. Depending on the type of car you have, you will pay at least RM100 to do this task on your own (the price of new brake pads).
Pull the wiper away from the windshield and press the small tab on the underside of the wiper to slide the wiper off the wiper arm. Line up the new wiper with the wiper arm and lower it onto the arm, making sure the open end of the hook on the arm is facing the plastic clip on the wiper. Pull it tight so the assembly clicks into place.

Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield. Repeat with the other wiper, and you are done!

Loosen the lug nuts or bolts on your tyres before your car is raised from the ground. Then use a jack to lift up your car. Remove the wheel from your car.
Remove the bolts that are attached to the brake calliper so you can slide the brake pads out through the top. Don’t let the calliper hang loosely; secure it using a bungee cord.

Brake Pads Spark Plugs Ideally spark plugs should be changed every 48,000km. Changing your spark plugs can take anywhere from 20 - 30 minutes (depending on how many plugs you have). It costs around RM20 (per spark plug) to do this yourself.

Using a c-clamp, compress the brake piston to the point where it is easy to put the calliper assembly back over the new brake pads. Replace the bolts once you put the calliper back on. Press on your brake pedal a few times to make sure you have good brake pressure. Put your wheel back on and tighten up all the lug nuts.

Install the new plug by screwing it in by hand and then tightening with a wrench.
Reattach the spark plug wire. Then repeat with each spark plug, one at a time.
Locate the spark plugs by following the thick, rubbery wires under the hood of your car. Depending on the number of cylinders in your engine, you will find four, six, or eight spark plugs.

Start at the end of the row of spark plugs. Wiggle and pull off the wire by grasping the part of the wire that’s closer to the engine. Only pull off one wire at a time.
After you get the first wire off, attach a spark plug socket and extension to a ratchet. Set your ratchet to loosen, slide it over the plug as far as it will go, then remove the old plug.

So, we asked a few students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) to use a superhero to represent their dad and this is what we got.
I feel that Mr. Incredible is exactly like my dad. He’s strong, energetic and funny. He’s a safe house for me and I love my daddy forever.

BAND OF BROTHERS In January 2013, two multitalented brothers with a passion for music combined their individual strengths and formed a duo called d2P.
T
he name d2P was coined by friends and it consists of their names Daniel Phang (the older brother) and Darren Phang (the younger brother). Daniel is a singer/ songwriter who plays the guitar while Darren is an aspiring DJ who plays the cajón and both of them are extremely talented beat boxers. Their self-composed songs have pop and hip-hop influences with meaningful lyrics and harmonious melodies. They also particularly enjoy making covers of current hit songs by creating acoustic versions, mashups or adding a beat box sequence. Daniel admires Usher, Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars whereas Darren looks up to DJs like Tiesto, Hardwell and Goldfish. Current favourite songs include ‘Say Something’ by Christina Aguilera and ‘All of Me’ by John Legend. Motivated by the need to pursue happiness in life, the remarkable duo utilises music as a powerful tool to remedy the problems that people are facing in life by providing emotional relief. To them, music helps them to connect with other people because it can be seen as an international language that crosses all boundaries. “Music is vital to our existence as we feel that our lives would be meaningless without it”, said Daniel. Daniel is mostly in charge of the songwriting process while Darren handles the creation of new beats and their songs mostly revolve around love stories and life experiences. When inspiration strikes, it is usually written down in
Daniel’s hand phone or notebook. d2P usually performs at cafes, malls, events, concerts and their place of worship. The most embarrassing experience that has happened to them onstage was when a guitar strap suddenly broke halfway during a performance. Fortunately, Daniel managed to grab the guitar before it hit the ground and avoided a huge mishap. The brothers are considering pursuing music as a full time career if the conditions are optimal. Daniel is a computer science major at Multimedia University while Darren is studying computer networking at APU. Currently, d2P encounters challenges like juggling between their music activities and other obligations like studies. Due to the long and complicated music recording process, they are currently making education a

priority by focusing on completing university assignments first and then setting aside a few hours for music composition and rehearsals. For now, they are aiming to perform in bigger local events to gain more recognition and they are working towards producing an acoustic and EDM album. The pair is eternally grateful towards their parents who have been supportive and encouraging in their interests both emotionally and financially. They would also like to thank other musicians that have collaborated with them in the past and for the advice given as well as friends and warm welcoming fans. Besides having a passion for music, Daniel and Darren have varying interests. Daniel enjoys creating software and mobile apps, producing short films and playing sports like ping pong. Darren on the other hand loves exploring new food outlets and frequents the gym to focus on bodybuilding. When asked what kind of superpowers they would like to possess, Daniel said that he would like to be able to control time and Darren wants to have the ability to conquer and win in all DOTA 2 and FIFA games. First of all, what’s there not to love about London Grammar’s If You Wait? For starters, the album is

titled album, Shakira, proves that she can still dish it out where it matters although she’s clearly trading her old style with a more pop-country style. We loved Medicine and Empire, but more so Empire for its tinkling piano sounds. Shakira also dabbles in a little bit of electro-folk groove in You Don’t Care About Me and some reggae in Cut Me Deep. However, her Can’t Remember To Forget You duet with Rihanna was definitely the star of the album. Shakira (both the album and the artiste) is not for everyone but for us, it’s definitely one for keeps!

Electronic Dance Music Genres
Electronic dance music (also known as EDM, though we’re not entirely fond of that acronym) has taken the music industry and the world by storm. HARDWELL
blend of influences has made techno distinctively different from other EDM genres and you can usually spot it a mile away! Its repetitive instrumental music and rhythm is usually marked with a bass drum with a tempo that’s between 120 to 150 beats per minute (bpm). Other sub genres of techno include acid techno, minimal techno, and schranz.

big part of it is largely due to A-list producers such as Skrillex, David Guetta and Armin van Buuren. So much so that other pop artistes such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga have incorporated electronic elements into their charting hits. EDM is music produced through equipment and played in a dance-based environment e.g. club, festival. How is it played? On turntables in which the disc jockey (DJ) uses to combine tracks into one smooth mix. These days, ‘reallife’ instruments such as the acoustic guitar, violin and drums are thrown into the equation to add a ‘zest of life’. Now that we’ve taken you through what EDM is, here are the top three EDM genres:

Contrary to popular belief, techno is not just another way to describe electronic music or EDM. Hailing from Detroit, techno is a dystopian genre that first kicked off in the late 80s. In the style of artistes like Kraftwerk, techno includes funk, electro, Chicago house and electric jazz. Confusing, isn’t it? Having said that, this unique

TRANCE Developed in Germany in the 90s, trance is the most encompassing genre of all because of its versatility. Most trance tracks have no qualms about including other elements such as techno, house, pop or classical. When asked, trance fans can and will only describe trance in a few words, with most calling it ‘high’, ‘love’ and ‘euphoric’. A trance track has characteristics such as breaks between the orchestrations and subtle silences before the rhythm fades (or rather, floods) in again. Notably, trance tracks also tend to feature vocalists with high, ethereal sopranos. K-Pop Superstars We all know the truth; K-Pop is rigorously produced, stunningly choreographed and filled with beautiful people.

n fact, it’s safe to say that K-Pop is about 75% visual e.g. swoon-worthy heartthrobs, showy clothes, plastic surgery, multi-coloured hair and strict diets. It relies so heavily on appearances that not all groups possess ‘real’ talent. Except for these:
2AM TVXQ
2AM is a South Korean four-member ballad band consisting of members Jo Kwon, Jinwoon, Seulong and Changmin. They are also one of the two subgroups that branched out from the 11-member boy band, One Day, the other being 2PM. The group officially debuted in 2008 in KBS’ Music Bank when they performed their debut song, This Song. In 2010, the group released their first fulllength album entitled, Saint o’Clock. Needless to say, and purely because of their vocal prowess, the album was a huge success. So much so that a year later, they released a ‘Japan Special Edition’ of Saint o’Clock. Their name was quickly picked up by regional fans and by 2012, they started recording a Chinese version of their song, I Wonder If You Hurt
When it comes to K-Pop idol girl groups, Brown Eyed Girls is a rarity. The group consists of four members, JeA, Miryo, Narsha and Ga-In. When they debuted, they were originally positioned as an R&B/ballad vocal group. As such, they faced a great deal of critical success as well as criticism because they didn’t quite reach the
commercial recognition they coveted. Hence, the girls had to challenge themselves with a notable variety of different music genres as well as their concept and ‘packaging’. Brown Eyed Girls released their third fulllength album in 2009, the double-disc Sound G, with its first heavily promoted single, Abracadabra. The music video for Abracadabra sparked controversies as the group sported a substantially more provocative visual style. Nevertheless, they still took the K-Pop music industry by storm, snagging awards at music shows and year end music awards.

Clearly, terribly underrated K-Pop idol boy group MBLAQ has come a long way since their debut single, Oh Yeah. Now that they’ve released a brand spanking new mini album, Broken, they can prove everyone wrong once again. We loved Be a Man a thousand times over and we can’t say it enough. If you love Justin Timberlake’s songs, you’re going to put this one on repeat. The title track is then followed closely by the slightly more forlorn Between Us and the acoustic ballad, Twelve Months. MBLAQ then upped the tempo with the slightly more upbeat Key. We know what you’re thinking! Why didn’t they do this earlier, right? We’re totally with you on that.
As far as a full moon goes, only a few (related) things come to mind – either werewolves or vampires. With her roots firmly placed on being an ex-member of the Wonder Girls, Sunmi is finally breaking free from the ‘bubblegum pop’ image with her first mini album. We loved it from the very beginning because of the dark image e.g. vampy, sexy. It opens with its title track of the same name, featuring Lena. Although it wasn’t as impressive as we had expected, we can’t dismiss Lena’s rapping. The catchier 24 Hours, however, definitely caught our attention, followed by the fifth song, Frozen In Time. We’re suckers for ballads and this one is laced with a full display of Sunmi’s ethereal vocal prowess.

BROWN EYED GIRLS
TVXQ! TVXQ! was originally a South Korean K-Pop idol boy group comprising Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu, U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin. Their name translates to “Rising Gods of the East” and ‘Gods’ they were. TVXQ! rose to mainstream recognition following the release of their first single album Hug in 2004. Their first studio albums, Tri-Angle (in 2004) and Rising Sun (in 2005) were both commercially successful, pushing the band’s popularity beyond Korea. Internationally, they quickly gained fame
as five talented lads with vocals to prove it, which was hard to come by, hence, regarded as a phenomenon. Unfortunately, in 2010, TVXQ! entered an indefinite hiatus after members Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu started a legal battle with their Korean agency S.M. Entertainment. After attending their 2013 CNBLUE Blue Moon World Tour in Malaysia, we knew that we wouldn’t be able to get over the boys anytime soon. Now, they’re finally back with just what we needed – truly good music, written by CNBlue themselves. The title track, Can’t Stop, is surprisingly refreshing as the band dabbles with orchestral instruments. After which, they brought back their steady bass beats and electric guitar riffs with Cold Love. What stole the show (or rather, the mini album), however, was Sleepless Night. It features gentle vocals and lyrics that are fairy-tale-worthy. It’s safe to say that CN Blue Can’t Stop doing what they do best – produce beautiful music!
Portraying a slightly more mature image in their teaser pictures, this K-Pop idol girl group is back and ready to show the world that they’re real women now! Don’t let this mini album – named Pink Blossom – fool you, for it is anything but childish. It opens with Sunday Monday, a mellow song clearly directed at a lover. The singing about young love continues with Mr. Chu, which we feel will go on to be the star of Pink Blossom. However, like we said, they’re real women now and So Long, a melancholic song about dealing with lost love is the evidence. Well done A Pink! When’s the next album?

Thanks to our hectic schedules, snacking has become a big part of our life. Most of us love junk foods and adore how convenient and tasty they can be. We often neglect to see the actual ingredients and how they are processed and prepackaged. Typical junk foods are often high in calories but low in nutritional value. This will impact our health one way or another. Here are a few comparisons between unhealthy snacking versus snacking on healthy foods.

A study from UCLA’s Brain Research Institute shows that a junk food diet changes our brain chemistry, making us fatigue easily and become lazy. We then easily gain weight because we can’t be bothered to get off the couch.
When snacking is done right, it boosts your metabolism and helps you lose those extra pounds. Nutrients such as protein (plus exercise) fuel the growth of lean muscle mass which in turn increases the metabolic rate and boosts calorie burn. Fibre, on the hand, improves digestion and makes you feel full longer, therefore reducing the desire to snack on unhealthy foods. There is no food that actually ‘burns fat’ but smart choices with the right ingredients will help your body to function at maximum efficiency.
Junk foods are not the main reason for acne but analysis has shown some evidence that diets with a high glycemic load (found in most junk foods) are linked to breakouts. Additionally, sugar and carbs spike levels of the hormone insulin, and may cause inflammation on your skin.
Consuming snacks that are filled with antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc allows proper cell reproduction, increase the immunity of the skin and assist in reducing possible inflammation. Establishing a good nutritional base for your internal needs is the best way to nourish and keep your skin clear and healthy.

About the size of Singapore, Cameron Highlands is one of Malaysia’s most extensive hill stations. It’s also one of the oldest tourist spots in Malaysia that houses ‘small town people’ such as local entrepreneurs, farm workers and retirees. As such, one can be sure that Cameron Highlands is perpetually peaceful and a good place to unwind. There are many things to see and do in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia’s largest highland resort. Walks through lovely little villages, visits to the butterfly, strawberry, honey bee farms and sprawling tea plantations 64

or meals at the delightful Tudor-styled country inns, are all pleasurable and relaxing activities to be experienced here. You can’t beat the cool weather up here. A few days out of the sweltering lowland heat will surely recharge your batteries! One other popular activity in Cameron Highlands, actually more of a tradition, is to have tea and scones. This very English tradition dates back to the days when the English colonial officers used this hilly location as a cool getaway from the heat of the lowlands. Bird-watching and trekking are also popular activities in Cameron Highlands. How to get there? By car, from the NorthSouth Expressway, exit the expressway at Tapah and then proceed via route 59 straight to the highlands. It takes about one hour and 30 minutes to reach the first town, Ringlet.
Maxwell Hill is located 1,036m above sea level. It is the oldest hill resort in Malaysia. This hill resort was founded in 1884 and was named after a British resident George Maxwell. Unlike more developed hills in Malaysia, Bukit Larut has remained pretty much as it was years ago, hence its low impact on tourism. Up on the peak, the cool weather is truly a welcome to many visitors, mostly nature lovers and birdwatchers. The appeal of the resort lies in its untouched beauty, embellished with flowers, birds and tree ferns. There are a few bungalows for rent, from RM120 to RM300. The bungalows are more suited for large groups as there are a few rooms in each bungalow. Cooking facilities are also available at the bungalows. There are also many jungle trails and one of the most popular one is the Gunung Hijau trail. This trail leads to the peak of Gunung Hijau at 1,449m above sea level. Along the way, one will be able to see many species of birds, the vantage view of the Taiping town, the exotic wild orchids, ferns and other flora and fauna. A few metres below Bukit Larut rest house is a playground. Nearby is a bridge that leads to a clock tower, from where one can enjoy a
beautiful view of Taiping. On a clear day, one can even see the coastline, all the way from Pangkor Island to Penang! How to get there? Maxwell Hill is easy to find once you arrive at Taman Tasik Taiping. Near Jalan Taman Tasik you will see road signs that will lead you to the main entrance of Maxwell Hill. There is enough parking space available. There are daily tours by four-wheeldrive Land Rovers that take you to the summit after a 30-minute, 13km ride from the main headquarters. Seats are limited so make sure you are there in time to buy tickets (once all daily tickets are sold you can only walk/hike up the hill). FRASER’S HILL Sitting pretty amidst the Pahang rainforest is the little hamlet of Fraser’s Hill. At 1,524m above sea level, this highlands resort is a naturalist’s paradise that boasts of innumerable plant, bird and animal species. This place is popular for those who are interested in nature-based pursuits such as trekking, bird watching, horse riding, fishing and camping. Fraser’s Hill is akin to a little Scottish village with granite coloured mock Tudor buildings
dotting the landscape. The town is relatively small, with much of the activity centred on a market square dominated by a little clock tower. Most of the town’s amenities are housed in colonial-styled buildings. You can indulge in many relaxing activities at Fraser’s Hill. Play a game of golf at the Fraser’s Hill Golf Club or go fishing (only for catch and release) and boating at Allans’ Water, stroll along the many beautiful flower gardens and parks or have a splash in the icy cold Jeriau Waterfalls. How to get there? Fraser’s Hill is located 105 km north of Kuala Lumpur, around two hours by car. For a long time, access to Fraser’s Hill was possible only via an eight km one-lane road known as the The Gap, used by uphill and downhill traffic in turns. Once through The Gap and into Fraser’s Hill, you will feel as though you have gone back in time! BUKIT TINGGI Bukit Tinggi is a small town in the Bentong district of Pahang, Malaysia. This small town, some 2,500 feet above sea level, is located along Karak Expressway, notable for its famous restaurants that lure visitors coming from Genting Highlands.
Colmar Tropicale, located in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang, is a replica of a collection of buildings from a north-eastern village in France dating back to the 16th century. The French themed resort was opened in July 2000. It’s surrounded by tropical forest land. The hotel has several outlets, where you can dine in the French way. Central to the village is Colmar Square where the aroma of the blooms will tantalise your senses. There are even fountains and park benches in the square for relaxation after a hard day’s work browsing in the 17 theme shops, or should one wish to take a breather from participating in the various activities. The Japanese Village (the second of its kind outside Japan) is located at 3,500 feet above sea level. It encompasses a Japanese Tea House, Sakura and Ume Tatami Suites, and a Botanical Garden. An hour-long authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony conducted by Kimono clad ladies can be observed at the Japanese Tea House located within a Japanese garden with mini waterfalls and a pond of multi-coloured Koi. How to get there? The soft and silky texture of the egg compliments the crunch of the toast, making it an absolute delight on a lazy Saturday morning. If pancakes are more your thing, then indulge in the Butterscotch Pancakes (RM14.90) that are served in a stack of freshly made goodness topped with berries, grilled bananas and a generous serving of butterscotch sauce. The meal has the perfect blend of spices, sausages, olives, minted yogurt, and tomatoes which are topped with an egg and baked faultlessly. Don’t forget to complete your meal with a perfect cup of coffee or tea. Using Sumatra’s Gayo mountain coffee beans, Mr. & Ms. Café serves good coffee with prices ranging from RM6 to RM11. If you’re more of a tea
drinker, have your pick from their selection of T2 teas, a brand hailing from the land down under or sip on chilled juices instead. Having nailed the breakfast and brunch department, the Mr. & Ms. Café menu also includes other great selections such as salads, pastas, burgers, sandwiches and of course, desserts. Their Creamy Carbonara (RM19.90) stands as their bestseller pasta with its generous serving of turkey ham, mushrooms and fresh herbs that are tossed with spaghetti in a cream sauce and topped with an egg yolk. The yolk makes the dish stand out from any other Carbonara you’ve had and it adds to the rich and silky texture while enhancing the flavour of this sexy dish. The extensive menu offers a great variety of food, ensuring patrons leave well comforted and satisfied. There’s something about this place that stands out from the many brunch cafes; maybe it’s the warm welcome of smiling faces or the simplistic décor of fresh flowers and silly play sticks. A collection of essays and short stories by a Yale graduate whose untimely death at age 22 cuts short a promising journalistic and literary career. Marina Keegan graduated from Yale as a literary golden girl with a position awaiting her at the New Yorker. But before she could even start her job, she was killed in a car crash. This book brings together a sampling of some of her fiction and nonfiction works in homage to what could have been had this remarkable young woman lived to fulfil her potential. The first section brings together short stories that showcase her ability to probe the murky, often unspoken emotional depths that haunt all relationships with fearlessness, lucidity and sensitivity. Not all of her fictional pieces, which focus primarily on exploring male/female and family dynamics, are equally strong. But they are always thoughtful, intelligent, and surprising and reveal a writer eager to find her literary voice by taking risks with both form and content. The second section includes essays, most of which appeared in the Yale Daily News or the Yale Herald. With wit, style and verve, she explores everything from her lifelong struggle with celiac disease to a day in the life of a professional exterminator. Her most affecting pieces, however, are about the members of her own generation, many of whom feel strong, sometimes overwhelming social pressure to seek validation in well-paying but unfulfilling jobs. Her work is a poignantly inspiring reminder of what is possible in the pursuit of dreams. A well-deserved tribute to a talented young writer.

Make Your Life Easier Imagine a day in your life – you wake up, get ready, drive to campus, attend classes, complete an assignment, make calls, catch a movie, have dinner at a highly recommended ‘Nasi Lemak’ place, go home, unwind while listening to music, set an alarm for the next day and finally fall asleep. Now, imagine doing all of that without a computer, smartphone or an app.

The most obvious use of Spotify is to assist with music discovery. With Spotify, it’s easy to find a curated list of the top old or new music! There are also all kinds of event-specific randomised playlists e.g. for parties, workouts, chill out, et cetera. Of course, you can also create and share your own according to the genres you like. Spotify also shares (read: syncs) your computer app with your smartphone app and vice versa. So you can never be without the awesome tunes you love.
Perpetually disorganised? Feel free to depend on Google Calendar. Users can view and make changes to it from just about anything e.g. computer, smartphone that’s connected to the internet. It also makes it easier to share information with other users which in turn will make scheduling events and creating invitations a breeze. Want to set up a group meeting? Simply create an event for it via Google Calendar and invite your group members.
Our parents would remember a time when they’ve heard a song in passing and yet have no means or ways of finding out the artist or title. So, while we’re on the topic of music discovery, another app comes to mind – Shazam, the app that listens to music and (hopefully) identifies it. All you have to do is open Shazam, press the big button, and a few seconds later, the app tells you the title, the artist, the album and sometimes, even the lyrics.
We can’t imagine carting a map around with us wherever we go or basing our journey on just landmarks alone. Luckily, we have Waze. It differs from traditional GPS navigation software as it learns from users’ driving times to provide routing and real-time traffic updates. People can report accidents, traffic jams, speed and police traps, as well as updating road information, landmarks, and et cetera. Waze has been blazing new paths for its users because as of June 2013, there were nearly 50 million users on it!

Your One True M8 HTC ONE (M8) HTC has a habit of making great high-end smartphones, and it looks like they’re at it again with their latest HTC One (M8). The slim, curved profile and brushed metal finish is easy on the eye as it is in the hand. It’s powered by a super-fast and powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz processor, and runs on the latest Android KitKat. The Sense 6 is intuitive and a breeze to use, integrating smoothly with the BlinkFeed platform and allows you to fill your home screen with all your favourite content from newsfeeds and social media pages. X-cite Your Senses MOTOROLA MOTO X The Moto X smartphone is the first real Google phone released after the tech giant’s acquisition of Motorola a couple of years back. Though it does not exactly light up the spec sheet on fire, it does provide for an entirely exciting and rewarding smartphone experience. Sporting a comfortably large 4.7in AMOLED screen that stretches over a swoopy and curvy body, the Moto X fits nicely and comfortably into the palm of your hand. But, here comes
the fun part. All you need is your voice to get the phone to do a series of tasks. The Touchless Control lets users get directions, set an alarm, respond to messages or do just about anything just by talking. An Active Display also lets you look at the time or view your notifications without having to wake up the phone. Topping that, the camera can be launched by twisting your wrist twice, and you’re all ready to quickly capture those important moments. Overall, it’s an above-average effort from Motorola.
G For Great Value MOTOROLA MOTO G For those of you looking for a mid-range handset that packs a punch and doesn’t blow a hole in your budget, then the new Moto G should be in your shortlist. Styling takes a cue from its bigger cousin, the Moto X, with a curved body and customisable/interchangeable covers. However, the Moto G is a slightly smaller phone with a brilliant HD 4.5in screen, but on the bright side, it fits perfectly into most hands and allows for one-handed operation of the handset. The phone can take a few dings and light knocks, courtesy of its tough Corning Gorilla Glass and water-repellent coating. Don’t let the size of it fool you though, because this little baby is powered by a sufficiently fast and powerful 1.2GHz quad-core processor that is upgradeable to the latest Android 4.4 KitKat. hat ramps up the cool factor further than a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 supercar? Why, a Corvette Z06 convertible of course. Unleashed recently at the New York auto show, this unholy beast ticks off all the boxes for performance and aesthetics, and comes off looking every bit as hot as a topless model. Chevy hasn’t offered a topless Z06 since as far back as 1963, and now with the latest Z06 convertible is set to join the likes of Porsche, Jaguar, Audi and BMW in offering highperformance sports cars in alfresco motoring form. As far as appearances go, the Z06 convertible is a mirror image to its coupe cousin, sans the roof. The padded cloth top sports a glass rear window and is able to lower itself up or down at the touch of a key fob, all while the car is moving at speeds of up to 30 mph.
Though it’s built on the same rigid aluminium frame structure like its Stingray cousin, the Z06 convertible is 20 per cent stiffer in torsion than its former fixed-roof predecessor. Body-styling is exactly the same as the hard-top coupe version, so expect to see all the same sexylooking lines, scoops, vents, spoilers and such. DOUBLE SCRUB ROADSHOW In April, we visited a couple of campuses in conjunction with the Men’s Biore Double Scrub Roadshow.
T
he roadshow lasted for about two weeks with five stops in total at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), GermanMalaysian Institute (GMI) and Universiti Malaya (UM). Students were treated to a hands-on experience (literally) with the Men’s Biore Double Scrub such as sampling, where about 1000 samples were given out, and a face wash demo. Some even left video testimonials and later walked away with a handful of goodies such as pore packs, gift pack sets and Watsons vouchers.
