Let Freedom

S

o the World Cup is over, and most of us are still catching up on our sleep and looking for the next topic of interest to talk about. As we are celebrating our country’s Independence Day this month, it’s all about freedom and being independent, then. We’ll be talking about the independence of our beloved nation and on a more personal level, what independence means to you and how you could go about achieving it. Read all about it in our cover story (pages 40 – 45). Don’t forget to check out the Campus Plus Brand Choice Awards 2014, where there are loads of prizes to be won. All you have to do to win these fabulous and exciting prizes is by taking part in our brand survey. Full details can be found on page 9. Also starting from this issue, we have a ‘Masters Award’ title being awarded to products that we’ve reviewed which are of outstanding excellence. Look out for it in our Wiredup section (pages 69 – 75). If you’re a fan of our home grown, world-renowned songstress Yuna, you would be ecstatic to know that she will be performing in this month’s MTV World Stage Malaysia (details in Event Listing, page 54). Find out about the songs that she will be performing, what she’s currently working on and her future plans and more in our interview with her on page 57. You can also cure your World Cup hangover by checking out our World Cup 2014 wrap up in our Sports news (page 23). Speaking of hangovers, Psy and Snoop Dogg’s collaboration in ‘Hangover’ has become the most viewed K-pop video on YouTube in the first half of this year. How did these two relatively ‘old timers’ beat out other younger K-pop acts, you wonder? Find out in our K-pop feature on page 58. In the midst of remembering our country’s independence and the struggle towards achieving it, we should also remember the victims and family members of flight MH17. We at Campus Plus offer our deepest condolences as well as our heartfelt prayers and support to all who are affected by this horrific tragedy. To all our readers, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you Selamat Hari Raya and Selamat Hari Merdeka!

Contributing back to society is an act that is instilled in every INTI student and a rich tradition that has been carried out by them for many years. This year, students from INTI International College Subang’s School of Business (SOBIZ) have decided to work with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to promote the Save Our Seafood (S.O.S) Project, which is a campaign that promotes awareness of sustainable seafood. Through SOBIZ Pulse - an initiative that encourages SOBIZ students to be actively involved in social work - the students have come together to organise various activities to raise funds and awareness for the S.O.S Project, which included ‘Live Green Pledge’ – a collection of over 2200 pledges to protect the environment, a recycling competition and an entertaining flash mob. The Food and Agriculture Organisation reports that 66% of the oceans’ commercially targeted marine fish stocks are either fully- or heavilyexploited, over exploited or depleted. This is an alarming figure, yet not many are aware of this worldwide predicament. Our students felt that this is an issue that really needs to be addressed, as it will determine whether tomorrow’s generations will be able to continue to enjoy the ocean’s riches. Our appetite for fish is fast surpassing our oceans’ ecological and productive limits. Overfishing is caused by gross mismanagement of our marine resources that has affected almost all corners of the globe, including Malaysia, according to Yeap Chong Wei, General Manager of the Marketing Department of WWF-Malaysia. He also thanked INTI for their collaboration and building awareness on the importance of sustainable seafood as well as raising funds for conservation efforts. Steps need to be taken towards achieving sustainable consumption and business practices today, if we wish to continue to enjoy our natural resources in future.

Professional Finance And Accounting Qualifications In To keep pace with expanded responsibilities fuelled by the dynamic business and regulatory environment, more and more young finance and accounting executives in Malaysia are turning to professional qualifications to further hone their skills. According to Taylor’s College President, Lim Tou Boon, the demand for professional qualifications is rising among young finance executives in tandem with the evolving global economic landscape. The role of finance professionals has expanded beyond managing core financial functions, to becoming the trusted advisor in strategic business decision-making. A professional qualification, such as the ACCA, allows young executives to gain a broad-range of skills sets and knowledge to meet the increasing demand for excellence and professionalism in the corporate world. It also allows them to explore beyond an accounting career, taking on more versatile roles such as risk management and corporate governance. Jasreen Kaur A/P Manmohan Sigh, a first year ACCA student at Taylor’s College, recently received the top World Prize Award recognition for scoring the joint highest mark worldwide for Paper P1 (Governance, Risk and Ethics). Jasreen is the only student from Malaysia to achieve this outstanding feat for ACCA Paper P1 in the December 2013 examinations. Obtaining an internationally recognised professional qualification such as ACCA is certainly creating a positive impact on her professional career development. More importantly, the rigorous processes that all ACCA students need to go through, including work experience and ethics modules training, have strengthen their potential to progress with confidence in the financial world. Every year, exceptional ACCA affiliates and students excel in their examinations. This latest batch of high achievers has done Malaysia proud, and Taylor’s is proud to honour them with the awards. Taylor’s ACCA students and affiliates reinforce the truth that Malaysian talents continue to be one of the best in the world and therefore are highly demanded by multi-national corporations.

KDU Opts For Oracle Solutions To Support Student Population Growth KDU University College, a pioneer in Malaysia’s private tertiary education, announced that the campus has deployed Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions to streamline its operational processes for improved student lifecycle management. In line with supporting a sustainable future with student population growth, it was critical that the campus streamlines its administrative and academic systems to achieve operational excellence. Previously, the legacy information management system in the university was unable to provide a holistic view of student activities as a result of the fragmented information derived from multiple campus departments. Furthermore, it took a long time for student admission processing which subsequently hindered the campus users’ access for real-time and updated enrollment information. Today, with the deployment of Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, KDU has improved the entire university’s student lifecycle management with more convenient learning modes and streamlined student information systems from enrollment to alumni management. In addition, the Oracle solutions featured a user interface that promotes student engagement and collaboration in KDU. With communications and feedback mechanisms, the university can gain the insights needed to help the students achieve their goals in studies.

Triple Wins In Youth Awards

University Of Nottingham Mourns The Loss

Of HRH Sultan Azlan Shah

The University of Nottingham mourns the loss of HRH Sultan Raja Tun Azlan Shah, Sultan of Perak, former Agong and Nottingham alumnus, and the flags at UNMC are flying at half-mast as a mark of respect. “The Sultan has been a great friend of the University’s, and remains as one of our most prolific alumni. One of our fondest memories was when Nottingham decided to open its campus in Malaysia; His Royal Highness was among the first hands that opened the door during our launch in 2005,” said Professor Christine Ennew, the CEO/Provost of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. HRH Sultan Raja Tun Azlan Shah graduated with a law degree in 1953 from The University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. A year later, he was admitted to the English Bar at Lincoln’s Inn. Having garnered invaluable experience of English law, he returned to Malaysia where he served as the Assistant State Secretary of Perak. He then joined the judicial and legal service of the Federation of Malaya where he served as First Class magistrate and President of the Sessions Court. In 1986, he was conferred with an honorary degree from The University of Nottingham. Family ties with Nottingham were strong and his son, the late HRH Raja Ashman Shah was also a graduate of the University, from the school of economics. According to Goh Boon Huar, President of The University of Nottingham Graduates Association of Malaysia, members were deeply saddened by the passing of Sultan Azlan Shah and will always remember His Royal Highness’ outstanding contribution in founding alumni relationships among graduates of Nottingham University as well as University of Nottingham Graduates Association of Malaysia. Professor Ennew reiterated that His Royal Highness had lived a life full of inspiration and service to others; through his tremendous contribution towards the development of the State of Perak, his support for education, his contribution to the judicial system as a man of the Law and his love for sports, especially of hockey.

Three UTAR students stole the limelight when their names were announced as the winners of the prestigious awards called ‘The Youth Awards’ at the Youths Today.Com’s inaugural award presentation ceremony held at the Chatime Galleria in Puchong, Selangor on 14 June 2014. The winning trio comprising Heong Kian Kee, Lee Jia Ling and Kum Peng Han walked away with trophies, certificates and cash prizes worth RM5,000 each. Organised by Youths Today.Com, the event aimed to recognise the potential of youths in Malaysia as well as to select its first generation of Malaysian Youth Ambassadors. This award presentation night celebrated the victory of up to 26 outstanding student leaders (21 youth ambassadors and five outstanding awards) from all over the country. Pounding The Pavement

In INTI’s Fight Against Cancer Streets in Subang Jaya recently took a pounding when more than 500 runners took part in a 7-kilometre run organised by students of INTI International College Subang to raise funds for the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM). Aside from generating awareness of cancer among the participants, including methods of prevention and early detection, the event raised over RM10,000 for the charity body which is financed entirely by voluntary contributions from the public. “This is not the first time we’ve worked with INTI. The students here frequently support us and I find that really encouraging. They constantly champion the rights of people living with cancer and have always extended a helping hand. I am really glad that over 500 young people have come together to help make a real difference,” said Dr Saunthari Somasundaram, President of NCSM. “Ten years ago, you would not have seen this sort of youth involvement in issues pertaining to cancer,” said Vijaya Sundary, the Project Executive of NCSM. “But now, students are very enthusiastic and eager to support charity. It’s amazing that INTI’s students have managed to put together this event within one month. It’s a compliment to their organising skills.” AUG 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

MANJULA MURUGESAN, THE ENVIRONMENT MANAGER OF TETRA PAK MALAYSIA EXPLAINING HOW DRINK PACKS CAN BE RECYCLED INTO ROOFING TILES TO CONSTRUCT NEW HOMES FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED ORANG ASLI COMMUNITIES

CAREton Project

2014

Tetra Pak (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., in partnership with Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, recently announced the launch of the CAREton Project 2014, a campaign that aims to collect and recycle used drink packs into roofing tiles that will be used by social enterprise EPIC Homes to construct new homes for underprivileged Orang Asli communities. This year, the CAREton project targets to collect an ambitious five million used drink packs; following a highly successful campaign in 2013 that collected 3.62 million packs - 119% above target due to growing support from business partners and greater consumer awareness. This year’s targeted collection translates into 690 roofing tiles, and is sufficient for 15 new homes. Approximately 7,247 drink packs are required for one roofing tile measuring 4 x 9 feet. Tetra Pak drink packs are 75% paper, 20% plastic, 5% aluminium and 100% recyclable. Partnering with Tetra Pak for the third year in a row, Nestlé will help to generate greater awareness through various promotional and educational activities. At the launch, Tetra Pak also announced that they will be launching its first ‘Recycle Easy’ microsite in July. Designed with geo-location technology, consumers, businesses and schools will be able to locate their nearest drop-off points or commercial collection centres across Malaysia on their computers, tablets or smart phones. The ‘Recycle Easy’ microsite makes public collection points easier to locate, thereby increasing accessibility. Tetra Pak introduced drink packs recycling in Malaysia back in 2005, when the recycling rate of drink packs was almost negligible. Since then, the recycling rate has been increasing every year, and reached 17.9% in 2013. In 2013 alone, Tetra Pak’s overall recycling efforts resulted in over 350 million drink packs being recycled, amounting to 3,898 tonnes of materials, which have been turned into new products such as cardboard boxes, notebooks, exercise books, schoolroom furniture and now, roofing tiles. For more information on the CAREton Project 2014 and full list of selected collection outlets, check out www.tetrapak.com/my/ environment/whatsnew/careton-project-2014.

The Passing Of A Diva: Sharifah Aini

Joyce Chu – The

Malaysian Chabor

Joyce Chu is a Malaysian singer who rose to fame after the music video of her song, “Malaysia Chabor”, went viral on YouTube, gaining more than four million hits since June 2014. She is also a member of Red People, a group of artistes supervised by the controversial rapper-cum-songwriter and local movie maker Namewee. 17-year-old Joyce has been uploading videos of covers of popular songs on her YouTube channel and became an instant sensation with YouTubers overnight. Now, Chu has come up with her first original song “Malaysia Chabor”, composed specially by Namewee. Just in case you are not familiar with local Malaysian dialects, ‘Chabor’ is Hokkien for “Girl”. In the song, she tells others that she is a “Malaysian Chabor” (Malaysian girl) and not Korean, as many have assumed her to be. “Malaysia Chabor” has since spawned several covers and numerous parodies by others, particularly by a Singaporean YouTuber, known online as Gary Chun who made his own version called “Singapore Dapor” (Singaporean guy). Which guy would not be attracted to or be enamoured by the sweet and saccharine beauty? His version is about that famous girl (presumably referring to Chu), always being called a Korean, trying to tell the whole world that she’s from Malaysia. Well Gary, the song title itself says it all – Malaysia Chabor (Malaysian Girl), no? In any case, Chu’s song and video is no less adorable and charming, especially when she whips out and starts strumming her trusted ukulele. Check out her videos here: www.youtube.com/joycechu and www.youtube.com/REDPEOPLE. 20

The recent passing of Datuk Sharifah Aini has sent shockwaves throughout the local entertainment industry. Malaysia’s beloved and legendary diva Sharifah Aini has passed away at the ripe age of 61. She is survived by her only son, Aliff Omar Ali Bakar. Diagnosed with lung fibrosis, a rare form of lung cancer, she was admitted to the Damansara Specialist Centre which confirmed her death on July 2nd, 2014 at around 1.26 am. An iconic figure in the singing and showbiz scene, Sharifah Aini is one of Malaysia’s most revered and renowned songstress since the golden age of music in the 60s and 70s. Blessed with a melodious voice and an infectious personality, she certainly has captured and captivated the hearts of the masses. Many have compared her to the great goddess of soul Anita Franklin and even the majestic Susan Boyle! (of Britain’s Got Talent fame). With some 93 album recordings under her belt and a staggering 700 over songs in her repertoire to her credit, it is no wonder that Kak Pah (as she is fondly known) is loved and worshipped by many, both locally and abroad. As such she was awarded the title of ‘The First Lady of Songs’ by RTM for her towering accomplishment. In 2003, Sharifah Aini, who is the second artiste to receive the rare title of Biduanita Negara after Saloma, was honoured with the Panglima Jasa Negara award which carries the title “Datuk” for her vast contribution to the country’s music industry. Famed for songs such as Tiga Malam, Kudaku Lari, Bintang Pujaan, Sumber Ilhamku, Seri Dewi Malam, Hapuslah Air Matamu, and her most recent hit single Maafkanlah. Jovial, vivacious and magnanimous, Kak Pah is also well-known for her noble and charitable causes. Her tireless work, as well as her caring and compassion for the needy and the homeless, in particular children, are greatly admirable. Born Sharifah Aini Syed Jaafar, her long and illustrious career will forever be remembered in the annals of the Malaysian entertainment industry for years or even decades to come. More so are her collection of golden oldies which are considered a treasure trove for those with the love and passion for beautiful songs. Her songs will always remain her legacy to us. Such evergreen artistes are extremely rare in this day and age, what’s more with the daily mushrooming of new artistes who are a dime a dozen. May she rest in peace.

The Curse Of Naxxramas Creeps Out!

Updates For

Heroes Of The Storm Sorry, don’t hold your breath, because Blizzard’s popular multiplayer online battle arena game, Heroes of The Storm’s release date is yet to be confirmed. Sad to say, the game is still in the alpha stage and at the time of writing, shows no signs of progress to beta. However, Blizzard has decided to add in a new hero, a new map and game system to make the game distinctive and more competitive with similar games. Firstly, the newly introduced hero would be Rehgar, who acts as a support character. Rehgar would be an interesting character to play with because he is a Shaman that can transform into a ghost wolf whenever he wants to and comes with a bunch of awesome elemental abilities. Next, there’s a brand new 3-lane battleground called the Garden of Terror that features a day and night sequence. It would be an exciting map for players. This is a map that combines features from the Dragon Shire and Haunted Mines maps. What makes it different are the summoned monster’s abilities and players also have the option of shifting night back to daytime. Both of these features are critical, for they could turn a losing game into a winning game or vice versa. Moreover, the long-awaited but debatable game system, Artifacts, would be included. According to the game director Dustin Browder, the Artifacts system allows players to customise a lot of their heroes’ core stats before the game launches. Unfortunately, this system has received a number of criticisms and concerns. The effect Artifacts will have on gamers’ success or lack of it in the game is the greatest criticism in the community because the Artifacts has to be purchased either by in-game gold or real money. Ultimately, this will result in gamers who grind for gold for hours on end will definitely have an advantage in winning the game over those who don’t. This unfairness has raised a big concern in the gaming community. Nevertheless, the game is still in its alpha stage and thus things could change, hopefully for the better. 22

Luis Suarez On A Biting Spree, Yet Again!

(FROM TOP) GERMANY WINS THE WORLD CUP AT LAST AFTER A 14-YEAR LONG WAIT FOR THE ULTIMATE PRIZE & PRESTIGE IN FOOTBALL GLORY; J.LO VS SHAKIRA SHOWDOWN AT WORLD CUP 2014 BRASIL – WHO WOULD YOU FANCY?

And The World Cup Goes To…

ze Germans!!!

One of the most entertaining and exciting World Cups in recent memory has just concluded, and we have a clear-cut and convincing winner as well. And no, it’s not Spain or Brazil or Argentina or even the Netherlands. It’s none other than the new “total football” team of Germany. Not surprisingly, the demise of La Roja’s “tikitaka”, the implosion of Selecao’s “beautiful game” and the breakdown of Oranje’s “total soccer” had truly paved the way for Die Mannschaft to become the absolute and undisputed kings of world football. And no one can steal the limelight away from Joachim Low’s newly-crowned champions, not even Argentina’s Messi, Portugal’s Ronaldo, Brazil’s Neymar, Holland’s Robben, or even Uruguay’s Suarez! And who could ever forget Luis Suarez’s infamous biting brouhaha (which eventually earned him a nine-game match ban from FIFA)? So much for El Pistolero (The Gunner)! Germany’s recipe to success is no real big secret either. The answer lies with plain and simple team work. Who would have guessed or anticipated that teamwork would actually prevail. Indeed, after the 7-1 demolition of Brazil by Germany in the semis, who would have thought or predicted that Brazil would again be obliterated by Holland with a “less embarrassing” score line of 3-0? Still, Brazil as the host nation kept their hopes high and their pride intact as the closing ceremony got underway, prior to the final kick-off of the tournament. As the finals loomed, Colombian superstar Shakira performed her infectious number, aptly titled ‘La La La’, jealously rivalling Jennifer Lopez’s opening ceremony act with the party hit song ‘Ole Ola’ (We Are One) – together with hiphop crooner Pitbull and Brazilian popstar Claudia Leitte. The finale proved to be an even matchup between Germany and Argentina with a marginal 1-0 win for the Germans in the dying minutes of extra time. No miracle moves though from “the magician” Lionel Messi this time around which could have brought back the nostalgia and past glory of Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup triumph. And so that concludes this edition of the World Cup in Brazil. See you in four years’ time then. Adieu and farewell to Brasil 2014, welcome and dobro pozhalovat Russia 2018!

Bad boy footballer Luis Suarez has done it again! No, he did not score another spectacular or mindblowing goal, nor did he win another player’s accolade. He had, however, bitten another opponent in a football match, this time in a match in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, no less! His victim is none other Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. The group match on 24 June 2014 between Uruguay and Italy – in which Uruguay eventually won 1-0 – also bore witness to several yellow cards. Suarez, for all his mesmerising skills and prolific scoring ability, seems to have not learnt his lesson from his past biting incidents. A top scorer for his club side Liverpool, Suarez has even been compared to the disgraced former boxing champ, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson. Tyson infamously bit off a chunk of Evander Holyfield’s right ear during one of his title defence bouts. Prior to his latest biting controversy, Suarez was involved in a racial slur bust-up with Patrice Evra of Manchester United in October 2011, for which his insensitive gung-ho attitude and incessant recklessness earned him an eight-game match ban and a total fine of £40,000 (RM220,000) by the English FA. Verbal abuses aside, Suarez’s biting brouhaha started with his altercation involving Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League match between Liverpool and Chelsea in April 2013. He subsequently served a ten-game suspension for his actions. This begs a few questions: Is Luis Suarez a serial or pathological biter? Or is he on some sort of sick, twisted and demented biting spree? Only time will tell. Yet Suarez is scoring goals, winning awards, captivating fans and still manages to land huge transfer deals with rival clubs. Is this the sort of example that young peeps and aspiring footballers should aspire to or emulate? We let you teeth-cide. CAMPUS PLUS |

LOOK THE PART TO GET THE JOB

For more info: www.facebook.com/JobStreet.com & www.facebook.com/GilletteMalaysia

AUGUST 2014

UPDATE YOUR LOOK AS YOU UPDATE YOUR RESUME Despite the adage to not “judge a book by its cover”, the job market is exactly that. Assumptions about our intelligence, abilities, sophistication and performance are usually made based on the image we project.

R

esults from a recent survey of 362 HR professionals, conducted by Jobstreet.com in collaboration with Gillette indicated that in today’s competitive job market, grooming plays a crucial part in determining who gets hired. When it comes to male grooming, 64% of hiring employers can accept employees with a fashionable beard style, but prefers a clean-shaven male candidate. A clean-shaven face was identified specifically as a critical grooming cue with 92% of employers believing that a clean shaven male gives a better impression. Almost half of hiring employers surveyed shared that when there are two equally qualified candidates, the better groomed person is more likely to get hired. When a candidate arrives unkempt for a job interview, HR professionals form the opinion that the candidate shows a lack of initiative and may need close supervision. The survey also found that employers do not tell candidates face-to-face that they have personal grooming issues. This results in a vicious cycle where more and more employees continue to slack off in the grooming department, and employers in turn continue to find it more and more difficult to hire a suitable candidate. Perhaps more importantly, 63.5% of HR professionals strongly feel that Malaysian employees, especially men, need to enhance their appearance through grooming. It goes without saying that in today’s ever-changing business world, the need to stay sharp is more important than ever before. Putting in that extra effort to look presentable will surely help to maximise the opportunity of becoming the top candidate in the minds of the hiring employers.

INDEPENDENCE STARTS WITH YOU

AUGUST 2014

M

alaysians from all walks of life, regardless of creed, religion and ethnicity have a day of commemoration for the struggles our forefathers went through in achieving the country’s Independence Day. In Bahasa Melayu, it’s called Hari Merdeka and we celebrate this momentous day on the 31st of August every year since 1957 when we gained independence from British colonial rule. And so you may ask, what’s the big fuss about it? Why is it important? We’re sure many of you just think of Hari Merdeka as another public holiday, as just another day with no classes or work, a day for lavish parades and sprightly festivities. For many others still (and I’m talking from general observation), it’s a day to go hang out at the nearest shopping mall. In a sense, yes, that’s all part of it, albeit being superficial and vacuous reasons at best. What many of us fail to observe and appreciate is the deeper meaning behind the celebrations and fanfare. The meaning of independence itself, of the struggles, complexities and selfless sacrifice involved towards achieving it is lost amongst many.

Independence is a value that many of us have taken for granted. Maybe, just maybe it’s because so many of us have had it so good for such a long period of time. Think about it. Our country is in a very privileged position geographically, we’re strong economically, rich in natural resources and free of many devastating natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes. We are extremely lucky that we don’t fight stupid and senseless wars, and enjoy unparalleled peace and prosperity. Many of us have grown up and live in fortunate circumstances. Our parents are loaded, there are numerous big malls and countless retail outlets to waste their hard earned money on (not to mention online shopping), we have the Internet and K-pop, and all the modern trappings of entertainment and lifestyle gadgets. Are all this possible without the independence of our nation? In the context of the country, independence generally means freedom from the control, influence, support or the like of others. That means that as an independent nation, we have the power to self-govern our lands and make our

‘WE, AS THE CITIZENS OF AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO DECIDE WHO WE WANT TO GOVERN US, TO CHOOSE THE LEADERS WHOM WE WANT TO TAKE US ON OUR JOURNEY TOWARDS BUILDING THE NATION IN ALL AREAS BE IT THE ECONOMY, EDUCATION, WELFARE, INDUSTRY, DEFENCE, AS WELL AS PROTECTING AND OVERSEEING OUR WAY OF LIFE’ 42

own laws and decisions and basically to function on our own without interference from other countries or nation states. Yup, that means as an independent nation, we can make our own decisions, determine our own destiny and live by our own rules without someone from the outside lord-ing it over us and telling us what to do. What’s more, as our country practises a parliamentary democracy system with constitutional monarchy, each and every citizen has the right, freedom and power to choose their leaders. Mind you, there’s no such thing under colonial rule. We, as the citizens of an independent country have the privilege to decide who we want to govern us, to choose the leaders whom we want to take us on our journey towards building the nation in all areas be it the economy, education, welfare, industry, defence, as well as

protecting and overseeing our way of life. An independent nation entails a single government that’s recognised by all, and being accorded with its own set of rights, on top of having a Federal Constitution that guarantees the rights of all its citizens. So as you can see, having independence is vitally important for both a country and its people to develop and move forward, free of outside influence. Hence, we should not take our nation’s independence for granted. Instead, we should appreciate, unite and defend our independence as a nation. Similarly, for individuals, independence is an equally important value and state of being that many constantly strive to attain. Individually, independence comes in many different forms and ways, and can be achieved through numerous means. It can also come to mean different things to different people. One person’s definition of independence may be different from another’s. Likewise, the way each individual goes about pursuing and achieving that independence may come in various differing ways or it could be through similar means as well. Recently, we had the opportunity to ask a handful of Malaysian youths what independence means to them personally, and though we got some unsurprising and mature answers from them (as well as some surprising thoughts too!), overall we were not surprised to see that independence ranks pretty highly in importance with everyone that we talked to.

INDEPENDENCE STARTS WITH YOU

AUGUST 2014

WHAT DOES INDEPENDENCE MEAN TO YOU? For many young Malaysians, independence means having the freedom to practise whatever you want to and freedom of speech, all within limits, of course. As UCSI Bachelor of Psychology student Lai Kam Chong enthuses, “It means the freedom to practise whatever you want to, within a boundary. I believe the voice of the people is very important for the country to improve. Within a country, there are many different people, opinions and talents. If their intentions are good, we can utilise all these talents and all these ideas to improve the country if they are allowed to speak.” According to Ervin Kaur Mann, it means that she doesn’t have to depend on anybody but herself. The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education student is of the opinion that being independent means one can do things by themselves. She elaborates, “When you can do things yourself, you don’t need to ask your parents’ permission and all that. Sometimes you still do, but you have to be mature because later on your parents won’t be there to guide you, so you have to guide yourself.” Because of this view, Ervin has attained a sense of achievement by being independent. Another student in Early Childhood Studies, Noor Nadhirah, echoes this sentiment. “Independence means we are not depending on others and we try to do everything by ourselves. You try to overcome everyday challenges

and solve problems by yourself.” And she is right. This is the prevailing stance and circumstance that many of these youths are adopting and going through as they are pursuing their further studies in places far away from the comfort of home. For many of them, it is the first time in their lives that they are forced to live on their own, in hostels and rental rooms, far removed from their parents, siblings and familiar surroundings. These circumstances have made a lot of them “grow up” and learn to be independent. Initially it was a struggle for Teong Hui Ting, a Foundation in Science student. “When I first came to college, I struggled and argued with my mum because I didn’t want to live in a hostel as I felt that I will be alone

and need to do everything by myself. But after living in the hostel for two months, I have actually learnt a lot of things. I’ve learnt how to be independent, how to wash my clothes and how to cook. These may be easy matters to you, but for me they are quite meaningful.” Shamla Sujenoren, a Diploma in Business student readily agrees. “I’m staying alone, far away from my parents, and I feel a sense of independence. It’s a big achievement because from the day I was born until I was about 17 years old, I’ve been together with them. Now that I live separately from them, there’s nobody to wash my clothes and cook for me. I feel that I’ve become more mature.” For others though, not having to live under the same roof with their parents is something that they’ve looked forward to and embraced with the fullest of enthusiasm once the opportunity presented itself. Diploma in Business Admin student Shehnu Priyaa says, “Independence means I don’t live in the same roof with my parents, meaning I can live alone and do whatever I want. Maybe because I was raised in a big family, so being alone is a big source of independence for me.” Puvaneswary Selvaraj (Bachelor of Accounting and Finances) adds, “I want to be alone and stay somewhere without my family members, so that I can learn and experience new things.”

Now that we have a picture of what independence means to you, we then ask the question of how you would go about achieving it. Lai thinks that education is a very important way to cultivate the awareness of independence and the freedom to speak. And for Teong, it’s something that comes naturally, because one gets used to being independent, simple as that. For Bachelor of Management student Muhd Nur Halim, it’s by observation and hard work to achieve better decision making. He says, “You observe people and you try to do like they do. You see and learn what they did to achieve their own freedom, and maybe we can implement the same things as them to achieve the same thing.” Ervin also goes by the same way. She observes the behaviour of her cousins and compares it to her own upbringing. As she is the only child, her parents have trained her from young to be independent.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL FOR INDEPENDENCE? From charismatic and powerful figures like Tunku Abdul Rahman, Nelson Mandela, Barrack Obama, Aung San Suu Kyi to Che Guevara, there is no shortage of current or historical role models we can look up to and emulate. Shehnu Priyaa of Nilai University even counts renowned model Tyra Banks as her role model for independence! Why? Because Tyra has achieved a lot, and she has did it by being fiercely independent. Notwithstanding the prominent personalities, most young people have as a role model for independence someone who is much closer and accessible to them. A pillar of strength and a tower of power, is it any surprise that a lot of young people look up to their own father and/or mother as their most important role model? Other family members who are looked up to as role models include older brothers and sisters, aunties, and in the case of Noor Nadhirah, her lecturer! Regardless of who we look up to, ultimately the onus is on ourselves to be independent or learn to become as such. As the world advances rapidly especially in terms of technology and life’s challenges continually pop up over the ever evolving social political landscape, we must learn to adapt on our own and be able to stand on our own two feet. The economy rises and falls, nothing in life is stable, so must learn to make a living and survive by ourselves. If we work at it, we will achieve a point where we are able to support ourselves without anyone’s help and have the clarity and courage to make the right decisions on our own. Having that in mind, one shouldn’t abuse their independence nor take it for granted, for being independent is both a blessing and a responsibility. AUG 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

S

ean Liew, a photographer, lecturer at Open University and a graphics designer will attest that while it may seem easy for photographers to take photos, it is the process inside their minds before the clicking that produces amazing results. When did you start taking photographs and when did you realise that photography is more than a hobby? I started at the age of 13 when I was given a Chinon manual film camera. I would go to the local library, read up on the fundamentals of photography to try out what I had learnt. But back then, buying film rolls were very expensive, especially for a student. So, I had to save up to buy films and to get them processed. Every click was precious and calculated, unlike the digital photography age we’re living in now. Coming from a design background, I worked with images and photos all the time and it came to a point when I thought to myself, “I could be taking these kinds of photos instead of proposing to my clients to purchase them from stock image companies”. And that was when I started shooting for my clients. Who inspired you to seriously go into this industry? Jen Siow, Malaysia’s great commercial photographer. He is the first photographer here, who plunged head first into digital photography and spent a lot of money investing in camera equipment that was ahead of its time. He was truly an inspiration and had helped fuel my passion and got me excited about digital photography and the possibilities it can offer.

What kind of photography do you enjoy most? Travel photography. I love travelling and I love photography. Combining the two passions is just a natural thing to do. I like taking the time to explore the proverbial road less travelled and capture unique experiences and rich cultures for my own memories. Photography has become such an easy hobby for everyone. People just click away with their phones and cameras capturing everything they do and see.

Photography is always seen as a glamorous job if you’re in National Geographic or Life magazine. Is photography the same in other areas? Photography has always been perceived as a glamorous career where photographers capture great images with ease and rub shoulders with celebrities and the elites but in actual fact, it’s just like any other profession where hard work is required and duly rewarded. While it may seem easy for photographers to take photos, it is the process inside their minds before the clicking that produces amazing results.

‘I like taking the time to explore the proverbial road less travelled and capture unique experiences and rich cultures for my own memories’

If someone is interested in photography as a career what would you advise them and what kind of starter camera should they use? Sign up for a photography course and look for work in the field that interests you. Be passionate and willing to put in the long hours to learn the skill. Learning doesn’t just come from textbooks or online tutorial videos. Much of the learning process comes from working, experimenting and making mistakes. Never be afraid to make mistakes, as it is the best teacher you will ever have. As for cameras, any entry-level camera in the market that costs anywhere between RM1000 and RM2000 can produce fantastic images. What makes your photography stand out from the crowd is your vision and photographic eye. These are things that money can’t buy and must be learnt through practise and experience. I also heard that you organise travel trips for photographers. Annually, I bring small groups of travellers to places like Mongolia, Tibet, India, China and Japan. Participants love it when they get to learn photography while travelling. Not only do they gain a great learning experience, they also get to bring home many memorable images.

ALWAYS KEEP THOSE HANDS CLEAN!

AUGUST 2014

W

wellness

e use our hands all the time to get things done throughout the day and yet most of us tend to forgo the need to sanitise our hands because we think that a quick wash with water will do the trick. Did you know that despite being cleaned regularly, the toilet door knob is one of the most germ infested things on campus, in public areas i.e. shopping malls, and even at home? Even desks, where sneezes and coughs end up all over, aren’t spared. Instead of putting these germs into your mouth when you eat or taking these germs home to Mommy dearest, get rid of them!

clean

hands saves lives When To Clean There are some critical times to clean your hands and they are: • Before and after meals and snacks • Before caring for young children • After touching a public surface • Before and after preparing food, especially when handling raw meat, poultry, or seafood • After using the restroom • When hands are dirty • After touching animals • When you or someone around you is ill

Aside from eating right and regular exercise, there’s one other way to ensure that you stay in tiptop form, always.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, here’s how you can keep your hands hygienic at all times.

Wash With Soap & Water Hand washing is like a “do-it-yourself” vaccine and it involves only five simple and effective steps - wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry. With this easy regime, you can reduce the spread of diarrheal diseases (shigellosis, typhoid, and cholera), acute respiratory infections (SARS, bird flu) and eye infections so you can stay healthy. Regular hand washing, particularly before and after certain activities, is one of the best ways

to remove germs, avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of germs to others. Didn’t think it’d be that easy, huh? Think again.

Carry A Hand Sanitiser You know those little bottles of liquid that people use sometimes? Yup, those. As much as it seems gross that your friends are opting for the slightly gooey gel instead of actually washing their hands, hand sanitisers can deactivate the H1N1 virus on contact. It also neutralises many other harmful bacteria like E. coli, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Salmonella, all of which causes serious illness. Opt for an alcohol-based hand sanitiser because it breaks up bacterial proteins and kills them. The right way to use a hand sanitiser is to use enough of it. Coat the front and back of your hands, getting them wet enough so that they take at least 15 seconds to dry.

Pack Some Wipes Sanitising wipes are great for almost everything from cleaning a baby’s butt to sanitising your hands and even right down to wiping down surfaces anytime, anyplace and anywhere. Wipes are different from sanitisers as they sanitise and clean in one step when applied to the surface or hands. They’re useful for when you can’t get to a sink and they’re also more convenient as they can be discarded easily whereas washing with soap and water require a rinse and dry. CAMPUS PLUS |

SLAXDAN

AUGUST 2014

unplugged by jean ng

DANIEL LOURDES A.K.A. SLAXDAN LEADS AN INCREDIBLE DOUBLE LIFE THAT MANY OF US CAN ONLY DREAM OF; A STUDENT MAJORING IN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES AT MONASH UNIVERSITY BY DAY AND A HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER DJ BY NIGHT, PLAYING AT HOUSE PARTIES, UNIVERSITIES, FORMAL EVENTS AND CLUBS.

THE STORY OF SLAXDAN

S

laxdan developed a passion for electronic dance music after being inspired by Dutch beats while living in the Netherlands in 2008. It started off with just mucking around with music software and as a result of being mainly self-taught; he has now progressed to music production. Initially inspired by DJs such as Hardwell, Tiesto and other mainstream deejays, his current favourites are Flume and Disclosure. Inspiration strikes each time he hears something that clicks and has feelings and emotions as its basis. The same thing goes for his performances where selecting the right tracks is based on the reactions of the crowd. This year, the direction of his music has been moving towards experimenting with his versatility by delving into new sub-genres of electronic music, yet staying true to his multifaceted style. As of now, mash-ups and bootlegs are his thing and he is currently perfecting his own style of mixes and mash-ups, aptly named a ‘Slaxshup’. Slaxdan’s favourite gig would have to be his debut set in March 2013, which was a major gig. He has had the privilege of opening for DJs Goldfish & Blink during Monash University’s party. Despite heavy rain and high nerves, his hard work, dedication and mad skills succeeded in keeping the crowd pumped up for two hours. You guessed it, his set was well received. Like a true artist, Slaxdan always makes his gigs a number one priority because there is always a fire inside and a burning passion to excel. There is always the obstacle of self-discipline and time management when it comes to studies but in fact, DJ-ing actually energises him to concentrate more on his studies. Slaxdan has won many competitions, namely the Beat Sessions DJ Battle in April 2013, judged by Red Bull Thre3style Malaysian Champion 2013, DJ Reeve. In May 2013, he won the opportunity to open for worldrenowned British dubstep music producers, Skream & Benga in KL during their Asian tour and headlined Southside’s monthly CTFO party in Vertigo KL in August

2013. Slaxdan has also toured colleges and universities with Red Bull for Red Bull’s promotional events, making him a familiar face and a recognised house name among university students. When asked to choose one song to play if he had only one day left on earth, Slaxdan would pick something that has a lot of emotion, euphoria and a toned down melody. An example of such a song would be the Greatest View by Flume because it’s great song and it is what’s inspiring him right now. As a DJ or a music producer, the highlight of his career would be to play at world festivals like Tomorrowland because that’s where he can show the world what he’s got. It is Slaxdan’s big dream. He would like to play not just at the mainstream festivals but also at the underground ones that promote other electronic music genres. Slaxdan is ever grateful for the support that he has received from his folks, friends and fellow Monashians. Having a dad who actually went to Vertigo to watch him perform just shows how supportive his parents are of him doing what he loves. Goals for the year after completing his final semester in university include focusing on personal growth, exploring new sounds and making original music productions. For now, do make sure to check out his latest Slaxshup entitled “Tell jaguar to be left alone”.

STORYLINE HUNTER HAYES

a total of 12 songs and two segues, you can feel the emotions that Hayes is trying to portray in each song. We loved it from the first beat right to the last. We also recommend that you listen to Storyline in sequence. Wild Card and Storyline are exactly what you would expect from a Hayes’ album – they are fun, catchy, happy and upbeat. Overall, Storyline gives us the familiar sounds of Hayes, but also presents us with a different side of Hayes emotionally. So is Storyline something new and different? Maybe, and maybe not, but it is definitely satisfying and entertaining.

of former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos and the woman who raised her, Estrella Cumpas. Unlike the previous studio album, the cast recording of the Here Lies Love album stars Ruthie Ann Miles as Imelda and Jose Llana as Ferdinand Marcos. What’s more exciting is it is better than the previous album. Its light and funky rhythm and lyrics comprehensively takes us into Imelda’s world. Relive history through Ruthie’s pleasant voice and Jose’s lovely tenor, and be enthralled with the poignant and smart lyrics and uplifting musicality. We loved this funky storytelling and who knows, you might find it surprisingly hard to resist too!

NEW EYES CLEAN BANDIT

Mozart’s House is the signature of fusion music. It begins with a pretty standard electronic-infused music until the classical music kicks in and fuses itself onto the track. A truly beautiful piece that left us impressed. Although Extraordinary feels anti-climactic, we are still in love with its tempo and beat that makes the whole song lively. We can’t help but be amazed with Dust Clears, a standout track that ably blends two different styles of voices. Come Over is definitely one of our favourite; it is pretty much the embodiment of summer. Its breezy and light vocals are perfectly matched with the background music. Who doesn’t love Rather Be, a surprise breakout hit that acknowledges the future of fusion music? Its fusion of violin, cello, and modern electronics with its blissful and light vocals are the reasons why we love it. It’s a track that’s always on the replay button.

The haunting music resembles an expertly carved horror story that constantly captivated us and made us anticipate what’s going to happen next. The tension created in this album is truly fearsome. It is not an album that would be everyone’s cup of tea, but fans of Gesaffelstein’s brand of dark techno would definitely be lapping up every track here.

A Conversation

With Yuna

Our very own international singer-songwriter and world-renowned artist, Yuna, needs no introduction.

C

urrently based in L.A., the scorchinghot artist first burst into the local music scene back in 2008, and has since left a trail of great songs, awesome albums, and numerous music awards both local and international in her wake. Her impact on the music industry is hardly surprising, as anyone who has ever listened to her songs would undoubtedly feel inspired and be in awe of her beautiful vocals and masterful song writing skills. What’s really exciting for Malaysian and regional fans alike is Yuna herself will be gracing the MTV World Stage Malaysia this coming August 16th. Excited yet? We are! Recently, we had the honour of chatting with the talented songstress, and got her to share with us (and to all of you) her latest happenings and what you can expect from her in the not too distant future.

CAMPUS+: What are some of the MTV World Stage Malaysia opening act songs that you’ll be performing? YUNA: I’ll be performing a couple of songs from my latest album (Nocturnal) and my new single, Come Back, as well as my previous single, Rescue. I’ll also be performing a couple of Malay songs, so I’m excited.

C+: What are you working on now? Y: Right now, I’m working on my third album and I’m still writing and recording it. So hopefully by next year I will have another album out. C+: Which artists would you like to collaborate with next? Y: I am a huge fan of Coldplay and I keep playing them over and over again. I would love to work with them. C+: Your music videos have a simple, light and humble approach. What’s the message that you want your fans to see through your videos? Y: For my music videos, first of all, it’s always about the music. Whenever we talk about making videos, I’m excited, but I’m always like, I don’t want to overdo it. I don’t like overdoing things. Music videos are just like listening to songs, but it’s something that we could deliver to the fans visually. The visuals should be something positive, and have a positive message. It should be something uplifting. Whenever I make a music video, it’s always all about art and the artistic side of it. I really enjoy experimenting and making them. And it’s always to inspire people. Just like how I make my music, my music videos are all about making people feel inspired.

C+: What was the biggest challenge you encountered before you made it big? Y: I think I’ve always been said ‘no’ to. Before I started, I have really wanted to do something with music for a very, very long time, but I never got the opportunity. For example, when I went for auditions and stuff like that, people always said no to me. So in the beginning, I worked really hard and I did something that I truly believed in and one day all the hard work and everything just paid off. So yeah, I think in the beginning it’s just hard to get people to listen to you and to really understand you and your music. I think that’s the biggest challenge in the beginning. C+: What is your message and advice to our readers and fans? Y: Always stay positive and support local music because we have a lot of talented idols and talented acts from Malaysia and Asia. I think they need more support from the locals to be able to carry on and make music. Actually, it’s an important industry in our country and region. So support them, and don’t stop. And if you have talent, if you have something to show, share it. Don’t be scared. Believe in your art and believe in your strength.

OLD TIMERS SHOW HOW IT’S DONE

AUGUST 2014

Psy and Snoop Dogg’s

Number One Hangover

Psy’s first musical collaboration with hiphop maestro Snoop Dogg in a scene from Hangover.

Y

ouTube sensation Psy is back and this time he’s all “stoned” with his latest hip song Hangover which features his maiden collaboration with American hip-hop mogul Snoop Dogg. It all started with the horse-riding “Gangnam craze” which went viral in 2012. Since then Gangnam Style had garnered over 2.04 billion hits on YouTube. Just when we thought Gangnam fever had finally subsided, Psy released his second major hit single Gentleman which was broadcast live from Korea during its inaugural launch on YouTube. Since its introduction in mid-April

Although widely regarded by many as a flop, Hangover has since reignited Psy’s stagnating career and waning popularity, hence, preserving the original spirit of Gangnam. Without being overly meticulous in its portrayal of being hung-over, the music video itself was not as mundane as expected as it depicted excessive boozing and the hangover effects of alcoholism. At the moment of writing,

RED LIGHT

SHORT HAIR

F(X)

AOA

Although f(x) is one of the most popular female acts in K-Pop, the group is always seen as struggling to stand out from the shadow of Girls’ Generation. With Red Light, they are not only stepping out of the shadows but forging ahead into uncharted territory within K-Pop. Opening with title track Red Light, which is as danceable as the 2013 hit single Rum Pum Pum Pum but minus the sugary sweetness, all 11 tracks on the album reflects on the changing sound of K-Pop and a shift in the overall style of f(x). We also liked the infectious sounds of Rainbow, which takes us on a trip to the darker side of world music and dance. From an upbeat dance vibe, the album then transitions to a slower set that highlights the vocal capabilities of f(x). Tracks such as the 70s-inspired All Night and Vacance display a surprisingly mature sound from the five members. Overall, we liked this album and think it may be one of the best K-Pop albums to be released over the summer.

Short Hair is the girl group’s first mini album, and it’s a follow up to their successful single Miniskirt. It’s a seven track album with two instrumental songs that cuts through various genres like pop, R&B and electronic. The opening song is a soulful R&B song called Fantasy which highlights the vocal talents of AOA. Then, we have the title track Short Hair, an interesting laidback pop track with 70s disco influences. Continuing the breezy sentimentality of summer and sporting the laidback vibes is Joa Yo! Then there’s Soulmate, easily one of the most infectious tracks on the album. Its contemporary sound and incorporation of hip hop in certain sections subtly reflects the tranquillity of youthful love, and we think it could easily be the background music for a K-drama! The tempo then notches up with You Know That, a catchy track that is also danceable to. We couldn’t help but be entertained by this short and sweet mini album.

2013, Gentleman has chalked up almost 712 million views – a considerable achievement given that the song was described as a rehashed version of Gangnam Style.

‘Although widely regarded by many as a flop, Hangover has since reignited Psy’s stagnating career and waning popularity, hence, preserving the original spirit of Gangnam’

Hangover has recorded an astronomical 100 million views in less than six weeks, propelling Psy as the number one K-pop artist, and beating out other younger K-pop acts in the process. Surely Psy must have done something right or else his cheesy and controversial parodies would not have received such rave reviews and views. So Psy is definitely here to stay, at least until his next big viral hit comes along. Well then, what can we say? Just ride along and revel in the psychotic wave of stardom and extravagance that we have all come to love and enjoy about Psy!

LET’S QUIT (SINGLE)

GOT LOVE

HANHAE

GOT 7

Hanhae, one third of popular hip-hop trio Phantom has decided to go it alone again with his first release in three years as a solo artist. Let’s Quit is the new single and features San E and C-Luv, and should prove to all doubters that Hanhae has what it takes to make it alone. Overall, the digital single is a laidback and breezy listen that’s anchored by a strong electric piano performance. Even with a stripped down drum loop, the song has a refreshingly live feel to it, thanks to some intriguing percussive flourishes. You can hear the musicians in Hanhae’s band laying down a strong pocket with aplomb and good taste, with a spot on retro funk vibe pervading the entire performance. Adding an edgy final touch to the song are rappers San E and C-Luv, laying on some solid performances that deliver cool street vibes.

This is the septet’s second EP, following their extremely well received debut Girls, Girls, Girls earlier this year. The opening song, U Got Me is rap-heavy, which is a good thing if you’re into that. It features superb singing from Youngjae, Jr. and JB. Next comes A, the track released as a single, and yes, it is extremely catchy. On this track, the rap is well-done and complemented by a killer hook that is a simple repeated piano riff. But for us, the standout track of the album is hands down Bad Behaviour. It opens with synth vocals and then eases into a rap cadence that builds into a harmony. JB, the leader of the group penned this song, and it boasts of edgy refrains and silky harmonies whilst the persistent synth vocals echo the title of the song. Catchy indeed! Our verdict: run out and get this album!

BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER AGAINST CANCER

In a show of solidarity in one of the largest cancer events of its kind in Malaysia, thousands of concerned individuals from communities across the nation will gather in public parks and fields in several states to celebrate, participate and connect with each other in the fight against cancer this year. Every year, more than 4,000 people including cancer survivors, volunteers and employees of large corporations walk tirelessly all night long around a track at Relay for Life Kuala Lumpur, organised by the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), to raise awareness of cancer, which continues to claim more lives each year. This year, we hope to rally more communities to participate in this life changing event. Relay for Life is a much anticipated, annual, overnight community-based fundraising cancer awareness event and gives communities from around the world a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have and continue to battle cancer. At Relay for Life Malaysia 2014, teams of participants will camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path throughout the night. This year, Relay for Life Malaysia 2014 will be held in Melaka from 6pm - 10 am on 16th and 17th August at SMK Padang Temu and followed by 20th and 21st Sepetember in Dataran Petaling Jaya. ith a multicultural society consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians, and other ethnicities, Malaysia is a firm favourite among fellow travellers from across the globe. With its colourful festivities and gastronomic delights, Malaysia is indeed the country of choice for many potential tourists especially first-time visitors. Its rich cultural heritage as well as diverse people of many races and religions is seen as a unique attraction and welcoming sight for those who choose to come to Malaysia. Culture, VMY 2014 is sure to bring in millions of travellers eager and “hungry” (pun intended) to visit Malaysia. Among the recommended or key states to visit in Malaysia are Melaka, Penang, Terengganu, Perak, Sarawak and Kedah.

MELAKA First stop, Melaka. Known as the historical city of Malaysia, Melaka has long been a travel hotspot for tourists. Having been occupied by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, Melaka has since retained much of the influences left behind by its former colonial masters. This can be seen in the heritage buildings and historical sites found in Melaka. The main attractions would include A Famosa, The Stadhuys, Malacca Sultanate Palace and Portuguese Square. After

the Portuguese captured and conquered Melaka, the villagers of Melaka helped the Portuguese build a fortress to defend themselves from future invaders. The fortress, called A Famosa suffered severe destruction during the Dutch invasion. What’s left currently is just the entrance walls, but it’s still well preserved until today. The Stadhuys became the official residence of the Dutch Governor in 1650. Today it is home to the Historic Museum and Ethnography Museum and it now holds many traditional bridal wear and relics on display. A replica of the Malacca Sultanate Palace or Istana Kesultanan Melaka was reconstructed at the foothills of St. Paul’s Hill or Bukit St. Paul. The design is based on the description of the palace from the 16thcentury Malay Annals or Sejarah Melayu. It is the only building of its kind in Malaysia, and it provides a rare glimpse of the ancient Malay kingdom that once flourished here. The palace also houses the Malacca Cultural Museum, which includes many artifacts of that kingdom. Portuguese Square has a mild affinity to Portugal and is known as ‘Mini Lisbon’ in Melaka. Located within the Portuguese Settlement, the

square is the culmination of Portuguese culture in its full splendour and colours. You will also find authentic Portuguese restaurants serving original Portuguese cuisine at the square.

PENANG Penang is another top destination among foreign tourists. Ever since Francis Light set foot on Penang, it has become an international free port and global tourist hub. Dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, this bustling city centre and scenic island wonder has been dazzling and captivating travellers for ages. Pulau Pinang, as the island side of the state is known locally, has numerous interesting places for sight-seeing and entertainment. Famous landmark buildings include Komtar Tower, Kek Lok Si Temple, Fort Cornwallis and Penang Hill. Komtar, a 65-storey tower is one of the most prominent landmarks in Penang with a viewing deck on the 58th floor offering unfettered views of the island and across the straits to Penang’s mainland. Nestled on a hilltop at Air Itam, near Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple in

Over at the Esplanade, which is on the northeastern coast of Penang, the star-shaped Fort Cornwallis is the largest standing fort in Malaysia and one of the earliest structures in Penang. In the northern sector of the island, you will find Penang Hill – and one of Malaysia’s oldest hill resorts – which is a scenic and popular hillside retreat for seasoned travellers. Though not as popular as Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands, it remains one of the island’s most popular tourist attractions. Penang also has many cultural and heritage sites. Among them is Old Georgetown which happens to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Smile At Thursdvys Joining the throng of hipster cafes and coffee shops is Thursdvys, your quintessential coffee house tucked in the friendly neighborhood of TTDI

O

f course it’s no ordinary coffee hangout but unique in everything from its name and décor to coffee selections and lip-smacking desserts. Thursdvys is the brainchild of a passionate coffee enthusiast who was inspired by the coffee culture in Melbourne, paired with the mannerism, charm and homely touch that Melbourne cafes had to offer. Upon entering the café, the smell of freshly brewed coffee hit my senses, wafting through the air and mingling with what I could only identify as sweet berries. Not long after did I discover it was the strawberry cheesecake, a hot seller at Thursdvys. I had the pleasure of meeting the café owner, Hadri, a charming young lad who spoke of his true passion for coffee. While most managers are often found behind the scenes of the business, I found Hadri working his way swiftly behind a contraption that many would claim to be a coffee machine. With quick pulls and stirs, precise measurements and a big smile, he worked his way behind the counter along with a crew that possessed equal enthusiasm and spunk. Yes, spunk! This cosy little coffee place got its name from the auspicious day of Thursday which marked large occurrences in Hadri’s life, both good and bad. The play on its spelling added to the fun factor while giving it a sense 66

of uniqueness, resembling the café itself. Hardwood floors, soft yellow lights and a rustic theme offer a warm and inviting vibe to patrons who have the option of enjoying their cuppa indoors or al fresco. One corner of the café resembles a bachelor pad with camouflage cushions, coffee tables and a stack of magazines. Holding on to fond memories of his home in Melbourne, Hardri specially designed the interior as such to resemble his apartment down under. Many have said it adds a homely feel and welcomes customers to hang out, catch up and just be. If you know your coffee then you will know quality when you see it, a definite find here. With beans sourced from various coffee countries, Thursdvys uses Common Man Coffee Roasters as their main coffee supplier, a talent located in Singapore. It’s been said that everyone makes coffee differently, with styles, mixes and recipes improved and improvised from famous coffee cultures in France and Italy. In Thursdvys, coffee is best in the form of a hot cup of Ristretto, a Melbourne favourite that is available in a range from 3 to 9 ounces and is priced between RM6 to RM12, making it affordable compared to most coffee outlets around Klang Valley. The Ristretto is smooth, rich and made with beautiful swirls on the surface, which adds a hint of aesthetic value. Of course

‘Thursdvys is a humble coffee spot that holds a rustic charm, appealing to hipsters, coffee lovers and those looking for a laidback hangout to enjoy a hot cup of Risettero’

other coffee options such as lattes, Americano, flat whites and the likes are also available. When indulging in your hot cuppa, pair it with a sweet something from the available dessert menu. A personal recommendation would be the strawberry cheesecake, a luscious slice featuring a perfect balance of sweetness and tart, making it a fantastic coffee companion. Chocolate aficionados can opt for the chocolate cream pie or the mars bar cake, a slightly sweeter but rich pick to satisfy cravings and heal sorrowful souls. For those looking for thirst quenchers outside of coffee, try the house signature coolers identified as Thor and Judy. Thor, cleverly named after the dashing superhero and often used in puns and jokes in reference to Thursday, coining the term ‘Thorsday’, is a sweet and refreshing peach cooler topped off with fizz and garnished with mint. Its sweeter sister, Judy, which is French for Thursday, is the same fizzy cooler made with strawberry instead. It’s got just the right amount of sweetness, bubbles and a delicious berry taste. The barista’s secret? Jam! No café is complete without food so feed your rumbling tummy with main eats ranging from sandwiches and brunch items to pasta and pies. The

menu is currently undergoing changes to find its ground of perfection but you can trust that the chef know his way around the kitchen. The Baked Mac & Cheese is the perfect pick for a warm, comforting meal that resembles happiness in a bowl. The dish is the ultimate comfort food, and is especially delicious on a cold rainy day. If eggs are more your thing then try the Creamy Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, consistently served fresh. Those looking to satisfy their sweet tooth can order up the Chocolate French Toast that’s topped with icing sugar and sliced strawberries. What I liked the most about Thursdvys is the friendly staff that worked their way around the till and behind the counters in jolly chatter and with wide smiles. It settles a warm feel in your heart, giving you a coffee experience that needs to be repeated. “I’m trying to improve the Malaysian attitude in the serving industry, one step at a time. We need to be friendly, happy and actually offer service with a smile” said Hadri. Thursdvys packs quite a crowd over the weekend and service can be slowed down, but a little patience will get you a satisfied tummy. Pop by any day of the week between 10am to 6pm and 10pm to 1am except on, well Thursdays. Yes, they’re closed on Thursdays, just because they can. AUG 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

THE BOOK THIEF AUTHOR: MARKUS ZUSAK

WAR OF THE WHALES: A TRUE STORY AUTHOR: JOSHUA HORWITZ Two men face off against an all-powerful navy and the fate of the ocean’s most majestic creatures hangs in the balance. A gripping,

brilliantly told tale of the secret and deadly struggle between American national security and the kings of the oceans. War of the Whales is the gripping tale of a crusading attorney who stumbles on one of the US Navy’s best-kept secrets: a submarine detection system that floods entire ocean basins with high-intensity sound and drives whales onto beaches. As Joel Reynolds launches a legal fight to expose and challenge the Navy program, marine biologist Ken Balcomb witnesses a mysterious mass stranding of whales near his research station in the Bahamas. Investigating this calamity, Balcomb is forced to choose between his conscience and an oath of secrecy he swore to the Navy in his youth. When Balcomb and Reynolds team up to expose the truth behind an epidemic of mass strandings, the stage is set for an epic battle that pits admirals against activists, rogue submarines against weaponised dolphins, and national security against the need to safeguard the ocean environment. Waged in secret military labs and the nation’s highest court, War of the Whales is a real-life thriller that combines the best of legal drama, natural history, and military intrigue.

A New York Times bestseller that has become a major motion picture, Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul. It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbours during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

BIG LITTLE LIES AUTHOR: LIANE MORIARTY

Big Little Lies tells the story of three women at their respective crossroads. Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She is witty, humourous, passionate, vengeful and unforgiving. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest. And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay. New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbours secret doubts about her son. While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane 68

Dual Capture Genius CANON POWERSHOT N100 The great thing about Canon’s PowerShot N100 compact camera is its ability to capture dual shots simultaneously using its main camera together with its rear camera. Now, the emotions and expressions of the photographer are captured along with his/her snapping work! On top of still photos, this dual capture mode works equally well in Full HD 30p video as well. PHILIPS FIDELIO L2 HEADPHONES

AUGUST 2014

HIGH-END

HI-FI

The search for a perfect pair of headphones is akin to searching for the best satay in town – there are many great options, and different people will find different options appealing.

SILVER

GOLD

I

f you enjoy reading about high-end headphones though, then you probably would have heard about the Philips Fidelio L2. While this may not take the crown as the perfect pair of headphones, it makes for a very strong contender. As you would have noticed by now, the Fidelio L2 is part of the Philips Fidelio family. The Fidelio family is where Philips puts all of its high-end audio products. Needless to say, the Fidelio L2 is on the same level as the beyerdynamic’s DT880 and the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900X. Unlike the beyerdynamic DT880, which has a closed back or the Audio-Technica ATHAD900X, which has an open back design, the Fidelio L2 sports a semi-open back design. This design, according to Philips, helps to provide “transparent sound of an open back with deep bass and noise isolation expected from a fully closed back”. In terms of comfort, we’re giving it extremely high points, because the overhead frame

72

| CAMPUS PLUS

provides just the right amount of clamp force for the earpieces. This makes it comfortable for those who wear spectacles and larger heads. When we tested this pair of headphones, we barely felt them! Testing the Fidelio L2 involved us playing a variety of songs from a variety of genres. We noticed that these headphones offer plenty of mids and highs. There’s also a healthy amount of bass, though not as much as that from Audio-Technica’s MTH-M50 or dare we say it…any Beats headphones. It’s also worth mentioning that a lot of the less prominent instruments in symphonic music could be heard, proving that these headphones have very good mid-range response. We did notice that the Fidelio L2 performs exceptionally well when listening to live recordings. When playing these tracks, sound staging was superb and clarity is absolutely amazing. However, do note that you’ll need a dedicated Digital-to-Analog converter and of course, your source file has to be of lossless

quality in order for the Fidelio L2 to truly show its true capabilities. Simply put, the Fidelio L2 is a great pair of headphones. They offer extremely good audio quality and overall performance is way above average. If you’re planning to invest in a pair of high-end headphones, the Fidelio L2 is a solid choice. Last but not least, it’s also important to know that these headphones offer an impedance level of 16 Ohm. This means that it can be easily driven by devices like smartphones and MP3 players. Connecting it to an amplifier may introduce some static, due to overloading.

Specifications • 12hz to 25Khz frequency response • 16 Ohm impedance • 105 dB sensitivity • 40mm drivers

HTC DESIRE 816

SO DESIRABLE With the Desire 816, HTC has set its sights towards conquering the middle segment market. Is the product itself up to the task? Let’s find out. and the volume rocker sits just below it, though we did find it feels a bit loose. On the top right corner, there’s a plastic flap that neatly hides the nanoSIM, a microSD card slot and a second SIM slot. Completing the frontal façade is a pair of BoomSound speakers which are nicely machinedrilled into the body. The camera lens and flash are neatly placed at the top left corner of the nonremovable back plate.

DISPLAY & AUDIO The huge 5.5-inch display is undoubtedly the Desire 816’s selling point. It has a resolution of 1200 x 720, which is not exactly the sharpest smartphone display out there, but nevertheless we found it perfectly acceptable and good enough. Just don’t compare it next to a phone with 1080p display. The excellent, frontfacing dual BoomSound speakers churn out fantastically crisp and loud audio; so listening to your favourite tunes, gaming and watching movies feels more of an engaging experience.

DESIGN

INTERFACE & FUNCTIONALITY

The first thing that strikes you about the HTC Desire 816 is, damn, this is a pretty BIG phone. Measuring 156.6mm tall and 78.7mm across, it nestles a 5.5-inch screen in a generous cocoon of plastic. If you’re into the whole smartphones-with-big-screens trend, then this is nicely up your alley. Otherwise, you would find the phablet-esque dimensions a handful (pun intended), as the phone is difficult to operate single-handedly, or to carry along in a jeans’ pocket. It’s obvious that HTC has taken a minimalist design approach with the Desire 816. From its clean lines and subtle curves down to its flat front and back, there is minimal fuss about it. The sides sport a matte finish trim with an almost rubberylike feel to it, providing for a comfortable grip despite the smooth, glossy finish of the device’s back. The power button sits on the top left spine

You get the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the Desire 816, though it has undergone significant visual modifications as HTC’s latest custom user interface, Sense 6.0 runs on top. We have no complaints as the much-praised UI offers a simplistic style and a visual consistency that’s second to none. Functionality is excellent too, as a number of features found on the flagship HTC One (M8) has been integrated into the Desire 816. One of them is the BlinkFeed, a live home screen that aggregates your social networking feeds with online news feeds, ensuring you get up-to-date information at a swipe of your fingers. Moreover, the locked screen is enhanced with app shortcuts and gestures that can take users straight to the BlinkFeed or the home screen, depending on the direction of the swipe. However, unlike the One (M8), the Desire 816 lacks a double-tap-to-wake function. Also,

74

| CAMPUS PLUS

its camera cannot be accessed by holding down the volume key.

OTHER FEATURES & CONCLUSIONS Speaking of camera, the Desire 816’s 13MP main camera and 5MP front camera with wideangle lens is as generous as it comes for a device of its class. Image quality is impressive over a variety of conditions. On top of that, the ISO and exposure values are tweak-able, and a variety of filters, HDR and panorama modes as well as an anti-shake digital image stabiliser rounds up the many excellent camera features. Battery capacity is a respectable 2600mAh, and like its One (M8) cousin, gets an Extreme Power Saving mode which provides hours of extra standby time even when the phone is down to 10% juice. For a mid-range smartphone, the HTC Desire 816 performs admirably given its specs, and it’s definitely worth looking into if you’re considering a phone with a larger screen and don’t want to break the bank.

We liked: Awesome dual front-facing speakers The big screen Both the main and front-facing cameras Practical UI Dual SIM Great value for money We disliked: Non-removable battery Flimsy volume rocker

AUGUST 2014

SOUNDS XPLOSIVE There’s no doubting that the target market for audio enthusiasts is a large one. There are those who enjoy their music while commuting to work, those who enjoy music while at home, and even those who enjoy sharing their music with a large crowd. SILVER

GOLD

I

f you fall into that last category, then you’d most likely love to be a DJ. The first step to actually becoming one is to have the equipment that would allow you to hear every beat with top precision. This is where headphones like the JVC HA-MR77X (MR77X) come in. The MR77X is the top-of-the-line headphones in JVC’s Xtreme Xplosives series, which means that this pair of headphones means business. For starters, it is equipped with 57mm drivers, delivering powerful bass and a good amount of highs and mids. It also has an impedance of 46 ohms, which means that it doesn’t take a lot of power to drive

it. This translates into a pair of headphones that can be used with smartphones and tablets, without the need for an amplifier. We’ll first give our impressions of the MR77X’s design – in all honesty, it’s something that’s fairly large and bulky. Taking them out with you on walks may prove to be a hindrance for some, especially if you’re hanging it across your neck. As for on- the-head comfort, we found the MR77X to be on the borderline between comfortable and…not so comfortable. This is because of the nature of its fairly rigid headband. The rigid headband provides a little bit too much clamping force, making the MR77X slightly uncomfortable to wear after an hour or so. However, this is understandable as both of the earpieces can be flipped up during use, to allow you to monitor your surroundings. Speaking about rigidity, these headphones are highly

durable. Made mostly out of high-quality plastic, we’re certain that if you throw the MR77X across the room, it’ll most likely still work after. In terms of performance, the MR77X offers plenty of bass and highs. It suffers a lot when it comes to the mid-range, so even though the MR77X is loud, it falls short on reproducing the full range of audio. Needless to say, these headphones excel in music genres like Dance and House. In slow music with a lot of acoustic guitars, the audio just feels flat, with the bass being at the forefront most of the time. Having spent time with the MR77X, there’s little doubt that these headphones are designed to appeal to those who are aspiring to be DJs, or those already in the profession. If you’re addicted to bass, then you’d most likely fall into the target market as well. 2015 MCLAREN P1

AUGUST 2014

POLE POSITION McLaren’s P1 is the closest mere mortals would ever get to experiencing Formula One on the streets without driving something that looks like a single-seat, open-wheel car.

F

orget the supercar, this round it’s all about a state-of-the-art hybrid hypercar. The 2015 McLaren P1, to be precise. Developed by one of the most successful F1 teams of all time, and who gave us the legendary McLaren F1 20 years ago, comes their latest masterpiece, an embodiment of everything learned in 50 years of building F1 and Le Mans winning cars. Let’s start with the external curves first. It looks both sexy and menacing at once. As with all McLaren cars, it has a carbon monocoque chassis. All the body panels are sculpted and layered from carbon fibre too, keeping the overall weight of the car low. But it is the car’s aerodynamics where the P1 has the biggest advantage over its rivals, especially when compared to the recently unveiled Porsche 918 Spyder. The P1 sports active aerodynamics in the form of under body flaps and a big-ass rear wing that adjusts automatically, boosting driver confidence and speed when needed. Flick it

76

| CAMPUS PLUS

into “race” mode, and the car dips 2-inches closer to the surface, creating “ground effects” suction that grips the car to the road. Compared to the McLaren F1, the new P1 is much faster, more agile and definitely much more composed at high speed. Stopping power is unmistakably better too, thanks to the carbon-ceramic discs specially developed by McLaren’s Grand Prix partner Akebono. Beneath the hood, there’s a 3.8L twin-turbo V8 that churns out a heart-stopping 727bhp. And it doesn’t stop there. Being a hybrid, an electric motor that pumps out an additional 176bhp is added on, bringing the P1’s combined output to a staggering 903bhp. Torque comes out to around 723lb-ft. Taking into account the dry weight of the car being at just 3,705 pounds, this translates into a power-to-weight ratio that’s way higher than any other top-end supercar. And it shows in the numbers, as the P1 does the nought to sixty in 2.6 seconds. It’s not just all power and looks with the

P1 though. The McLaren’s other-worldly capabilities are amplified through its finely tuned balance and sweet handling, and the entire concept of this beast is geared for maximum speed through all track sections.
