“Knock-knock! Who’s there? Thermos. Thermos, who?

Thermos be a better knock-knock joke than this!”

Y

es, we’re working our way right into April and at the helm of the month sits a day (known as April Fools’) when it’s perfectly okay to tell the lamest jokes and pull the meanest pranks on your friends. Or, you know, just about anyone you want to. We asked some of you what was the worst prank anyone has ever played on you and your replies truly shocked us! Read all about it in our Campus Talk, page 57. Since we’re on the topic of jokes, we’ve decided to go all out this month by featuring our favourite home-grown jokers, the lovable MACC trio. By ‘MACC’, we don’t mean the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission but the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians. As individuals, they’re simply known as Douglas Lim, Kuah Jenhan and Phoon Chi Ho. There’s a reason why these three men never fail to bring the house down at their PJ Live Arts stand-up comedy shows. All you need to know on pages 48 and 49! Moving on, April is also a month where we celebrate the founding of the World Health Organisation with the annual World Health Day. With that in mind, we’ve got nifty tips for you to dance your way to fitness (Arts & Culture, pages 52 and 53), workout habits you need to avoid (Guys’ Stuff, page 40), quick and easy home remedies for illnesses (Life Hacks/DIY, pages 54 and 55) and a handy ‘bloody’ diet regime (Wellness, page 67). More importantly, we’ve also got the deets on all you need to know about your food because, after all, isn’t there a saying that you are what you eat? So, before you put that yummy trans-fatfilled pastry into your mouth, flip through pages 42 till 47. After which, feel free to pick one of these scenic hills (pages 68 and 69) to, for lack of better word, take a hike. Or go for a run, in celebration of all that’s fit and healthy. We’ll race you!

Limkokwing Launches

World’s Biggest Debate With a participation list of over 200 teams from across the nation, Limkokwing University is set to launch the biggest debate ever organised for high school students. Chief Adjudicator Don Siron Pereira said this was the first time a debate of this magnitude was organised for high schools and this includes the impressive amount of prizes allotted for both participants and winners. Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak commended the university for providing this opportunity to Malaysian youths to build their skills. “I welcome this initiative by Limkokwing University of Creative Technology to unearth the huge amount of talent the country possesses in its youths. All elements associated with debates build character and calibre. Given the prominence and prestige of the Limkokwing International Debating Championship I look forward to seeing more Malaysians participating, benefitting and learning from the experience.”, he said. The format used is based on the British Parliamentary Style of debate. The best team will get an all-expenses paid trip to London where they will get a chance to spend a month at the university’s London campus. The top team will also receive a cash prize of RM10,000 and full scholarships tenable at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Cyberjaya for their choice of programme. In total the prizes that include scholarships and cash amount to RM2.5 million, considered the highest a university has invested to encourage debates.

MTC and UiTM To Develop

First Span Table

(FROM LEFT) DR. ROHANA HASSAN, SENIOR LECTURER, CIVIL ENGINEERING FACULTY OF UITM EXPLAINING THE PROCESS OF THE BEAM TESTING; THE 12-METRE GLULAM BEAM READY FOR TESTING

The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) is collaborating with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to develop the country’s first span tables for glued laminated timber (glulam) produced from Malaysian timber. Span tables are developed by structural engineers to establish the maximum load a wooden beam of a specific length (a ‘span’) can support. Before a span table for a species of wood can be developed, various tests need to be conducted with different lengths, depths and width of the wood under examination. The species chosen for this pioneer work is Mengkulang (Heritiera spp). Pilot trials for the Mengkulang glulam were recently concluded at the Heavy Structure Laboratory, Civil Engineering Faculty of UiTM. The test, the first ever conducted on Mengkulang glulam, involved subjecting a 12-metre long glulam beam to increasing sheer stress pressures, up to a limit of 70 kilonewtons, in an attempt to determine the maximum load it could safely support. The Mengkulang tree is native to Southeast Asia and is plentiful in Malaysia. Wood from the Mengkulang tree is commonly used for flooring, stairs, work panels, as well as door and window frames. Tests on the Mengkulang glulam will possibly extend its applications to load-bearing structural uses. 8

It was certainly passion that led Taylor’s University student, Arshad Zamir bin Mohd Azmi, to be crowned champion of the first MasterChef Malaysia All Stars competition. For the 22-yearold, this recognition comes thanks to his siblings’ intervention before he joined the competition the first time around. Zamir shared that while he always knew that his true passion is in cooking, he wanted to fulfil his parents’ wishes to study Engineering. Like most mainstream parents, they hoped that their son would pursue a career as an Engineer instead. After seeing Zamir impress the judges and Malaysians alike throughout the six months of production of the competition, his father became a fan and the then-teenager enrolled for the Diploma in Culinary Arts at Taylor’s University. When the producers of the show reached out to him to participate in the MasterChef Malaysia All Stars edition, he jumped at the opportunity and had the aim of being the champion. Zamir, who was a fan favourite in Season 1, surfed through the bumpy and smooth ride he had throughout the All Stars competition. For his final presentation, he prepared mushroom soup as his starter and ‘Seabass gone Wild’, a dish that consisted of pasta, asparagus puree, scallop mousse and prawns that were served with seabass for his main course. He rounded up the three-course meal with a dessert he named ‘My Final’, pandan mousse, custard and butterscotch sauce served with cake.

Helping Malaysia Meet

The One Academy Students Learn Fashion

Growing Need For Pharmacists

from a Creative Perspective

A GROUP SHOT OF THE HAPPY FASHION DESIGN STUDENTS OF THE ONE ACADEMY ESMOD KUALA LUMPUR

Australian-born but London-based Fashion Photographer and Editor, Leigh Keily flew in to give The One Academy fashion students an inspiring sharing session about fashion from a creative perspective. Leigh, who is also an educator in the UK, teaches students how to communicate their ideas through stories in photography, especially photo shoots for fashion magazines. As a co-founder of style magazine PHOENIX, he actively engages with state-of-the-art fashion projects and is also as the co-founder/editor of specialist men’s magazine JON and is in photo shoot sessions as photography director of GEIST. Basically, The One Academy students were in for a treat to be able to learn from an artistic and informative professional like Leigh himself, to grasp the tools of the trade of fashion art direction. The One Academy fashion design students also learned about shooting products, while Leigh included that it is important to create a suitable mood and lighting. He said “It doesn’t have to be a clean and perfect setting, because even an ‘accidentalart’ mood works well too to help the product stand out.” Although the sharing on photography was ‘touch base’, Leigh still emphasised on creative inspiration topics to make sure that The One Academy students are enlightened in the artistic perspective of photography and direction. It was certainly a unique learning experience for The One Academy’s aspiring fashion designers. As the speaker puts it, fashion isn’t just about developing fashion sense and style coordination, but it is also about creating stories through a creative perspective; practically a mentality that is strongly supported by The One Academy.

PROFESSOR DR. PT THOMAS, TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PHARMACY DEAN

According to newly appointed Taylor’s School of Pharmacy Dean Professor Dr. P.T. Thomas, demand for quality pharmacists will be outstripping the supply of new graduates. He believes the government’s pro-active measures to develop the local pharmaceutical industry and initiatives to improve the services in hospitals and the expansion plans of established chain pharmacies will create further need for pharmacists. Currently, Malaysia has about 11,000 pharmacists with a population of about 27 million, thus giving a pharmacistto-population ratio of 1:2500. However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a pharmacist-to-population ratio of 1:2000. “At Taylor’s University, we hope to see more young Malaysians entering the profession of pharmacy. A pharmacy graduate is a very versatile person who can fit into many roles, traditional as well as nontraditional, within the healthcare domain. Pharmacy is a highly unique yet versatile discipline, in that it provides the opportunity to become not only a pharmacist, but also the ability to handle any job that is science-related.”, said Professor Dr. Thomas. Professor Dr. Thomas explained that Taylor’s School of Pharmacy’s new curriculum is designed to equip graduates with both patient-related and industry skills. The balance of subjects in the new curriculum will produce a pharmacist who is contemporary and sufficiently equipped to be able to work both in hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry. Students’ involvement in projects that benefit the society will develop empathy and a caring attitude. Additionally, exposure to pharmacy entrepreneurs will stimulate the graduates to think “out of the box” and look for new opportunities. APR 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

Ellen Page Comes Out Gay

Harold Ramis

Passes Away At 69 Actor and director Harold Ramis, best known for the films ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Groundhog Day’, has died at age 69. He suffered from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rare disease that involves swelling of the blood vessels and died from complications of the illness surrounded by his family. The star had reportedly been quiet about his illness, which dated back to 2010. Born in Chicago to convenience store owners Ruth and Nathan, he studied at Washington University in St Louis and upon graduation, briefly worked in a psychiatric ward. He started his career as a writer by penning art stories for his local newspaper and editing Playboy magazine’s ‘party jokes’ section. Harold Ramis found fame as the bespectacled ghost hunter Egon Spengler in the Ghostbusters franchise in 1984. He was also a talented writer and director, whose credits included ‘Caddyshack’ and ‘Animal House’. Ramis won many professional honors and awards, he was the recipient of the American Comedy Award, the British Comedy Award, and the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award for screenwriting. He most recently directed episodes of ‘The Office’. He was a brilliant, shining example for every comedy writer and his death prompted an outpouring of tributes on Twitter. “His creativity, compassion, intelligence, humour and spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him,” said his family in a statement. Harold Ramis is survived by his wife, Erica Mann Ramis and children Violet Stiel, Julian and Daniel Ramis. He also has two grandchildren.

Most likely you had no idea that Hollywood A-listers Anna Paquin, Drew Barrymore, Mike White, Megan Fox, Billie Joe Armstrong and even Snooki all identified themselves as bisexual (though Snooki does admit to preferring males). That’s probably because they didn’t have any epic coming-out speeches. But not Ellen Page, the ‘Juno’ starlet. No siree! The 26-year-old announced she is a lesbian at the 2014 Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s ‘Time to Thrive’ conference. With what would soon be a ‘moment in history’ speech, she said, “I’m here today because I am gay. Because maybe I can make a difference and help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility. It’s weird because here I am, an actress, representing - at least in some sense - an industry that places crushing standards on all of us. Not just young people, but everyone. Standards of beauty, of a good life and of success. Standards that, I hate to admit, have affected me. You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how you have to dress and who you have to be. I have been trying to push back, to be authentic, to follow my heart, but it can be hard,” Ellen added. Hard but you did it! Good on you, Ellen.

The Oscars

Was Fantastic

This year’s Oscars telecast ratings hit a 10-year high as host Ellen DeGeneres won plaudits for slick hosting of Hollywood’s biggest night – and breaking a Twitter record. The awards were seen by 43 million Americans, drawing the biggest audience of any entertainment programme since the finale of hit sitcom Friends in 2004. Of course, millions others from around the globe tuned in to watch the three-and-a-half hour show, adding to that existing statistic. Perhaps it was the influence of Ellen herself, who has always been known to rile up the crowd without having to come off as offensive. Not only was she hosting the Oscars for the second time in her career, she also ordered pizza, took a star-studded selfie and poked fun at her audience in a wellreceived performance on Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. Her star-studded selfie, which included A-list celebrities Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Angelina Jolie, just to name a few, had nearly 100,000 retweets within five minutes and over 2.8 million the following morning. How’s that for breaking Twitter? Other epic moments included John Travolta squinting at the teleprompter, Idina Menzel singing the Oscar-winning Best Original Song ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen, Pharrell Williams’ dancing and ’12 Years a Slave’ emerging as the biggest winner of the night. Most fantastic Oscars ever? We think so.

FMFA2014 Abruptly Cancelled At The 11th Hour The finale of Future Music Festival Asia 2014 (FMFA2014) was cancelled as six people, including three women, died from drug usage after suffocating at the venue. 15 others were sent to the Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre and Universiti Kebangsaan Medical Centre hospitals for drug abuse treatment. Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) Director Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said that prior to the incident, police had detained a whopping total of 40 people including nine for possessing ecstasy, nine for ganja, while 22 other were suspecting of taking other drugs which had yet to be identified. “Those who were detained for possessing ecstasy were four foreigners and five locals; possession of ganja were two foreigners and seven locals, while the 22 others included 16 foreigners from Zimbabwe, Australia, Indonesia, India and six locals,” he said. He also said that the deceased died from taking a ‘new ecstasy drug’, having succumbed to it within 10 minutes. The drug was apparently ‘new’ in this country and possibly being tried in the ‘market’ here by the drug syndicate. In fact, preliminary investigations by the police found that the drug had been openly distributed among patrons of FMFA2014. It would’ve been the last and biggest day of Southeast Asia’s most massive music festival, but go out with a bang, it did not.

Make Way For Zidane Junior!

FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola The first time the original FIFA World Cup Trophy made an unprecedented tour was in 2006. Last year, football’s most coveted prize began its round-the-world journey with a ceremonial send-off at the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is the third time that the world’s most prominent symbol of football is going on tour around the world. “The Trophy Tour is a great opportunity to create excitement before the matches start and to bring to life the ‘World’s Cup’ – the most inclusive Coca-Cola campaign ever,” Coca-Cola Brazil’s general manager for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Michel Davidovich said when he addressed reporters from 10 countries at the event. Over the next few months, the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola will give millions of fans around the globe the chance to get up close and personal with the authentic, solid-gold trophy presented to the FIFA World Cup-winning country every four years. The route will include the first-ever pan-Latin America tour with events in 39 countries, as well as stops in 50 countries that have never hosted the trophy. Yes, this includes Malaysia as the tour made a stop here in January too! In April, the tour will reach an estimated one million Brazilians on its final leg through the host nation’s 27 capital cities. The 92,000-mile tour will reach 89 countries in the run-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, which starts on 12th June in São Paulo.

For Zinedine Zidane, talent runs in the family. We hear that his son, Enzo Fernandez has won the chance to be selected for the French Under-19 squad, a potential first step along the path of his father, who rose to international fame scoring two goals that helped win the World Cup for his country in 1998. Enzo was born in France in 1995, but moved to Spain when his father played for Real Madrid and obtained Spanish citizenship in 2006, before playing for the Spain Under-15 team in 2009. The 18-year-old, who is currently part of the youth team at Real Madrid as a midfielder, was born in France but attained Spanish citizenship in 2006 and was subsequently called up for the Spain Under-15 in 2009. However, the youngster has now decided to link up with Les Bleus’ youth setup and will take part in a training camp in Clairefontaine. That having said, Enzo a.k.a Zidane Junior still retains the option to choose between playing for France and Spain at senior level. His 41-year-old father (now assistant coach to Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti) is still widely seen as one of the world’s footballing greats and in 2004, was named Europe’s best player of the past 50 years by a UEFA poll.

THE ART OF FACE WASHING

Stay Away From Hot Water When you’re showering using hot water, you tend to wash your face with the same water. Excessive hot water has the tendency to strip healthy natural oils from the skin too quickly. It is always better to wash your face with cold or lukewarm water.

Stop Obsessing Washing your face twice a day is recommended, but not more than that. Excessive cleansing may strip the good oils that keep your skin healthy and balanced, resulting in over-drying which may irritate or sting your skin. A cleanser in a pump is convenient to dispense just the right amount of product to lessen the concentration of your cleanser for a gentler wash.

Watch Out For Your Eyes It’s more sensitive around the eye area because the skin is much more delicate and thin. So be gentle when it comes to cleaning the skin around the eye area. It’s best to choose a moisturising formula that provides a gentle yet effective cleansing. 26

APRIL 2014

Stop Rubbing Your Face It is common for most of us to quickly wipe our face with a towel, especially when we’re in a rush. Doing this can be rather harsh for your face. It’s best to use a gentle, clean cloth and pat your skin to dry. This will allow fine mist of water to remain on the skin so that it will seal in the moisture when you apply a moisturiser.

Ingredients Matter Looking for the perfect cleanser is all about what’s in the product. EVERSOFT Whitening and Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a gentle and soapfree formula that is made of 100% mulberry extract, a powerful antioxidant ingredient which is rich in Vitamin C and Amino Acid that work effectively to boost, revitalise and protect the skin’s natural fairness. It also contains Hyaluronic Acid, an excellent hydrating ingredient to effectively lock the moisture in your skin.

TIPS ON PREVENTING HAIR LOSS

APRIL 2014

How to Stop

Hair Fall?

It’s absolutely distressing when you start losing hair due to reasons like stress, pollution, poor diet, hormonal imbalance or other health problems.

M

ost people think of preventing hair loss only after they have lost a lot of hair, but if they start while the head is full of hair, it works out a lot easier emotionally and financially. Preventing is simpler than treating hair loss and the answer lies in sensible hair care. So, here are a few things you can do to prevent your hair from falling.

Try Himalaya Anti-Hair Fall Cream. This unique leave-on treatment contains Eclipta and Licorice. It reduces hair loss and stimulates hair growth. The extracts of Chickpea and Amla are rich sources of natural proteins and vitamins to nourish hair from the roots.

Follow a Healthy Lifestyle Hair, like your skin and nails, is often a barometer of general health. If you are healthy, your hair will probably look good. So, eat your fruits and vegetables, especially those filled with vitamin B, iron, calcium and zinc, for they have been linked to healthy hair. Always consume a protein-rich diet and drink adequate water.

Keep It Clean Dirty hair is more likely to get infected and more likely to fall. For oily and normal scalp, you may wash your hair daily, but for dry scalp, wash only once every two to three days, depending on your scalp condition. Buy good quality shampoo and hair products, this is cheaper in the long run than treating hair that is already damaged. When you shampoo your hair, concentrate on the scalp and hair roots. When applying a conditioner, hair lotion or hair cream, it’s better to concentrate on the ends of your hair.

DIY Remedies • Natural juices — Rub scalp with garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice. Leave it on overnight and wash it thoroughly in the morning to reduce hair loss. • Antioxidants — Apply warm green tea (two bags brewed in one cup of water) mixture on your scalp and leave it on for an hour and then rinse. Green tea contains antioxidants which can boost hair growth. • Practise Meditation — Relaxing can help in reducing stress and restore hormonal balance. • Get a Head Massage — Massaging your scalp for a few minutes daily will help stimulate circulation. Good scalp circulation keeps hair follicles active. Circulation can be improved when massaged with a few drops of warm scalp oil till it’s absorbed into the scalp. Leave it on for a while before washing.

Try Himalaya Anti-Hair Fall Hair Oil Try Himalaya’s Anti-Hair Fall Shampoo. It’s a breakthrough 2-in-1 formula that provides root nourishment and strengthens weak hair follicles. It conditions and improves hair texture to reduce hair fall. It’s free from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).

28

| CAMPUS PLUS

It’s enriched with the goodness of Thistles and Indian Gooseberry that strengthen root shafts. Fenugreek is rich in lecithin and proteins that nourish the hair roots. Neem and Bael work simultaneously to prevent scamp infections and keep hair healthy.

UNHEALTHY PRACTICES Using styles that pull the hair tight, such as braids or pony tails, may cause hair to come out of its roots. You hair might permanently stop growing from the areas it’s pulled from most. Combing your hair or rough towelling when it’s wet will cause some hair strands to come off or stretch and break others. Any chemical treatments (even so-called herbal ones) designed to drastically change the way your hair looks. Excessive usage of curling wand, curling iron and hair straightener on wet hair. It damages the hair and causes it to dry up and break off. Blow-drying will dry out the scalp and damage hair follicles. Allow hair to air dry partly or change the heat setting on your blower to the lowest.

HOW TO WEAR MIDI THE RIGHT WAY

l

by jq lee

APRIL 2014

The

Tea- ength

Di emma Tea-length skirts, also known as Midi skirts, are picking up in popularity this season.

U

nfortunately, these trendy skirts are not the easiest things to wear. The problem lies with the length of the skirt, ending anywhere from just below the knee to a few inches above the ankle. It’s tricky because the hemline tends to hit at the widest part of your leg and make your legs look short. Luckily, we have some tips to help you master the midi.

SHAPE AND LENGTH

Take your height and body shape into consideration. Your tealength skirt should either hit just below the knee or just below the widest part of your calf. If a skirt hits at the thicker part of your legs, it will make you look stalky. If you’re petite, it’s important to pick a shorter length to elongate your figure. In terms of volume, choose a skirt that sits on your waist and skims over your hips for curvy girls while boyish figure can go for a straighter shape or a fish tail style.

BALANCING IT

If you wear a bold colour midi, temper it with a neutral blouse. As for pleated or fuller options, keep the top simple. A tea-length skirt is also great to wear with a cropped top in an elegant way. A slight show of skin will help balance out the coverage of the skirt.

FOOTWEAR

It’s advisable to pair this style with heeled shoes in order to lengthen the legs but heels are by no means compulsory – if the skirt is at a flattering length. If you opt for heels, choose one that shows off the top of your foot and ankle, like a simple ankle-strap sandal or classic pump. Same rule for flats. With very little leg on show, it’s important to keep your shoes minimal and elegant. As for colours, flesh-coloured shoes pair best as they give an illusion of longer legs.

34

| CAMPUS PLUS

TUCK IT IN

Tucking your top into the skirt will create an extra long leg line (from your natural waist to your toes). This makes the smaller section of exposed leg less prominent.

The ravishing runway is embracing the stylish examples of fashion’s latest Eastern obsession. Asia’s rich culture and history have contributed to countless style inspirations that are taking the fashion industry by storm. Opalescent fabrics, traditional oriental motifs and kimono detailings add a dash of mystery and glamour on the runway.

The blazer is an essential part of the male wardrobe. Descended from greatness, it’s a versatile piece of clothing that all too often gets relegated to the back of the closet as ‘too dressy’. Whether you choose to pair it off with a suit or wear it with your casual jeans, you can’t go wrong with pair of fitted blazers.

THE BIGGEST MISTAKES YOU MAKING DURING EXERCISE

by jq lee

APRIL 2014

t u o k Wor s t i b Ha id o v A o T

W

orking Out Longer, at a Moderate Pace

It’s all about maximising your time! Instead of working out for an hour at an easy-tomoderate intensity level, step it up a notch. Challenge yourself to 30 minutes of non-stop intense exercise. In between, you can take 15-30 seconds breaks, but move quickly from one workout to the next. Give it 100% for 30 minutes instead of 75% for an hour. Just browse through YouTube for some short, highintensity workout ideas.

C

rane Your Neck to Watch TV (Or Your Feet)

Anything that throws off your posture, whether it’s hunching over to look at your feet or leaning to the left for a better view of the TV, is generally a bad idea. Your neck is pulled to the side or dropped forward and one part of the musculature gets stretched while another gets tightened. The longer you’re in that position, the higher your risk of injury becomes. You’re also likely to offset your balance because your body follows suit.

H

ydrating with Sports Drinks

S

Sports drinks may give you a boost but they are full of sugar and calories. You should stick to plain water. If you tend to feel tired during a workout, try fuelling before you begin. Eating a healthy snack 45 minutes before a workout will give you more energy.

40

| CAMPUS PLUS

kipping Warm-up

D

Some days you just want to hop on the treadmill and get it over with, but skipping warm-up can lead to pain and injuries. All you need is five to seven minutes for an active warm-up with a ‘joint-by-joint approach’ that includes hip circles, toe touches and more.

oing the Same Exercise Over and Over Again

When you do the same routine at every workout session, your body gets used to it and it becomes easier. Your body only uses half the energy to complete a task as your muscles become familiar to the particular exercise motion. Mix it up by changing your workouts daily to trick your body into working harder. This will also save you from boredom.

Do You Really Know Your

FOOD?

“Stop snacking!”, “Cut down on carbonated drinks!”, “Don’t eat out all the time!”

H

ow many times have you heard the saying, “You are what you eat” or “Eat your vegetables, it’ll bring colour to your cheeks”? We’ve heard it all, many, many times. The problem is, most of us probably grew up not believing them because of the natural long-term effect of things. It’s not anyone’s fault – human beings are comfortably aloof to the things they don’t immediately see or feel. A good example would be smoking. Although the habit has been linked to heart and artery diseases, it won’t cause a cardiac arrest immediately. On top of that, all brands of cigarettes carry graphics of the damage that smoking can do to a person, but the tar doesn’t do the obvious and turn your face black. Hence, people keep doing it anyway. Irresponsible or ignorant? Let’s discuss.

Rising Health Risks The world today is facing a dilemma; although more people are living longer, they’re not necessarily healthier. US-based Intuitive Surgical Inc senior director of medical research Dr Catherine Mohr said growing income and food supply is stretching life expectancy rates but climbing alongside are higher rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. A projection by the World Health Organisation draws a clearer picture for those who are still unable to grasp the full effect of rising health risks. 42

We know you’re thinking, “But it’s only a projection and nahhh it can’t happen to me” but the health risks are very, very real, plus you’re wrong, it can happen to anyone. On top of that, the numbers sit right in the relevant age bracket, i.e. yours, don’t they? Exactly.

You Are What You Eat Some diseases are hereditary so if you’re unlucky, you might’ve inherited diabetes, high blood pressure (which is linked to stroke), heart diseases or cancer simply because of your genes. However, there are always precautions to take to ensure that you’re well prepared for any health challenges in the future. These precautions (health advice) can also be taken by everyone else, of course. In fact, the earlier the better.

1 Avoid Dehydrators

Your brain is 70% to 80% water. When it’s metabolically active 10 to 12 hours a day, removing metabolic waste from the brain requires optimal hydration. Super-hydrate with two cups at the beginning of the day and avoid dehydrators, e.g. processed sugary foods, high doses of caffeine and soda.

2 Cancer-Fighting Foods

Although many causes of cancer are environmental, e.g. tobacco, excessive sun exposure, chemical solvents and fumes, you still need to max out whatever protection you can get. There are so many types of food that have cancer-fighting properties and most of these are easy to add to your diet. Load up on garlic, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, walnuts, green tea and berries.

3 What Not To Eat

Meat, cheese and butter can be rich in saturated fat, which has been linked to obesity - a big cancer predictor. Processed meat tends to be high in nitrites and nitrates, preservatives that can potentially increase your risk of stomach and other cancers. Best if they are all eaten in moderation.

‘If that’s not enough to convince you, your diet can also aggravate the symptoms of a whole range of illnesses, including autism, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and panic attacks’

Mood Doomers How does food influence our mood? It affects the body’s metabolism, hormones and neurotransmitters (mood chemicals that are produced in the brain), and these in turn influence our emotions, concentration and energy. If that’s not enough to convince you, your diet can also aggravate the symptoms of a whole range of illnesses, including autism, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Things like coffee deplete serotonin and you need as much serotonin you can get because it makes you happy. Control your intake and try not to have it first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. It’s bad because that quick delivery of caffeine to the bloodstream leads to more anxiety and stress, and is famous for the ‘caffeine crash’ after. Here are some other well-known mood doomers, a.k.a stuff that affect your mood in a bad way: • • • • •

WORLD HEALTH DAY

APRIL 2014

Fruits and vegetables and those containing essential fatty acids, e.g. sardines, tuna, salmon, pumpkin and walnuts, provide for good mental health. Put that on your grocery shopping list this week!

Creature of Habit(s) Living and eating healthy doesn’t have to be mindboggling or complicated. We’ve already touched on a healthy diet (what to eat, what to avoid). Now, let’s talk about lifestyle habits. We’ll help you ‘cover your bases’ from dropping what’s bad for you to eating right and to really living.

1 Stop Smoking, Now

It directly causes 30% of heart disease deaths, 30% of cancer deaths and a massive 80% to 90% of all lung cancers. This bad habit also astronomically raises your odds for heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure. The question shouldn’t be, “Why should I quit?” – it should be “Why shouldn’t I?”

2 Drink Moderately

Women who regularly consume two or more drinks a day and men who regularly down three or more are at higher risk for liver damage, various cancers, high blood pressure and depression. Limit your alcohol intake and you’ll also be cutting your risk of being in a car accident.

3 Keep It At 80%

Did you know that it takes about 20 minutes after eating before your brain registers that you’re satisfied? True story. It also helps to eat slowly while waiting to feel full. You might still feel a little hungry for a few minutes but you’ll feel comfortable very shortly.

4 Make Breakfast A Ritual

Always start your day with your first meal of the day in the morning. By doing so, you’ll be giving yourself more energy for whatever you need to do later. You’ll also be setting a positive tone for the day by having made a good health decision!

5 Exercise Whenever You Can

You don’t need to spend two hours in the gym every day to get a good workout. In fact, there are very effective workouts you can do in 20 minutes or less! To make it easier, make it a habit to take the stairs instead of the elevator or walk whenever you can. Then, see what a big difference it makes.

DOUGLAS LIM

N

o, not the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission but the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians. Malaysian comedy veteran Douglas Lim heads the ‘association’, which consists of Douglas Lim himself, Kuah Jenhan and Phoon Chi Ho.

Douglas Lim, the Underground Overlord

FROM WHAT WE KNOW, MACC WAS THOUGHT UP BY DOUGLAS, WHO HAD A DREAM TO BRING LAUGHTER TO THE WORLD. WITH THAT IDEA IN MIND, HE THEN SOUGHT THE ASSISTANCE OF TWO OTHER JOKERS, KUAH JENHAN AND PHOON CHI HO

Douglas Lim’s CV is testament that he is many (successful) things, spanning from being a composer and lyricist to acting (both onscreen and stage) and hosting, and now, comedian extraordinaire. His stand-up comedy performances include, ‘Eh, Got Free Ticket Ah?’ at Actors Studio Bangsar, Comedy Club KL, Comedy Club Singapore, Lake Club Comedy Night, Harith Iskander’s Nationwide Tour, ‘The June 4th Show’ at No Black Tie and numerous corporate events. He was previously nominated for ‘Best Actor in a Comedy’ at the 1998 Asian TV Awards. From what we know, MACC was thought up by Douglas, who had a dream to bring laughter to the world. With that idea in mind, he then sought the assistance of two other jokers, Kuah Jenhan and Phoon Chi Ho.

Kuah Jenhan, Gangster Rat Acting as Police Young Kuah Jenhan has performed in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Singapore. His biggest break was perhaps when he was invited to perform at The Comic’s Lounge a.k.a Australia’s biggest comedy club. These days, he’s busy delivering the best comedic curveballs to sold-out audiences across Malaysia. The audience at MACC shows remember him for his unique brand of humour and the cheeky smile that goes with his performances. Of course, they also remember him as ‘the most handsome among the three MACC comedians’ – even if he says so himself. Jenhan also never fails to deliver comedy ‘bites’ across his social media platforms, where he’s most active offstage. In his free time, he writes for Esquire magazine Malaysia, where he’s a columnist, on top of being a voiceover talent and a scriptwriter for TV, feature films and performing arts.

His jokes are mostly based off every day sharp-wit observations and rib-tickling takes on local life. He’s famously known for one thing though – although he’s naturally funny, Chi Ho’s gigs are something even the youngest member of the audience can enjoy. There’s usually no profanity, no vulgarity, no violence and of course, no nudity. Not that we’d really want to see him in the nude anyway. Just saying. Together, the MACC ‘band of brothers’ provide for hours of good fun and great laughs. Oh, don’t be surprised to see Douglas break into a parody of a popular pop song at the end of a MACC show. It’ll tickle you to no end!

Phoon Chi Ho, Police Rat Acting as Gangster

THIS PAGE | CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: DOUGLAS LIM; KUAH JENHAN; PHOON CHI HO

Phoon Chi Ho is a name that’s all too familiar to fans of Malaysian comedy shows. Other than performing regularly with the Young Comedians of Malaysia (YCOM), he’s also the driving force behind local skit troublemakers, ‘The ComeBackKings’. They say that Chi Ho is so hardworking that he’s a comedy promoter, an actor, a freelance scriptwriter and a house-husband. But, he works the hardest as a stand-up comedian.

COOL IN THE 80S

APRIL 2014

CAMPUS PLUS COULD NOT COME TO AN AGREEMENT IF THE 80S WAS A DECADE THAT ROCKED OR A DECADE OF EMBARRASSMENT. THE 80S ARE SOMEHOW LOOKING VERY INNOCENT AND HAPPY FROM A DISTANCE. 50

W

e agree that certain things will always be cool – Wham, DuranDuran, Madonna, Pac-Man, E.T, The Cosby Show, The Smurfs (we are still wondering why Smurfette is the only female smurf), Reebok High Tops, Walkman and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Leg Warmers Another of one of the fashion fads that didn’t make a lot of sense. People in the 80s sure had cold legs because of the miniskirts they wore or maybe they thought they looked cute. People from all over the world wore this regardless of the weather. Who on earth invented this?

However, there are some things that most of us would like to pretend we had nothing to do with. They were considered super awesome in the 80s but are just so lame today. Most of us should be slapped for associating with them!

Hairdos

Fluorescent Clothing

The Not-So-Cool MC Hammer Pants This unisex pants was considered sexy by the man who eventually fizzled out and filed for bankruptcy. Get this people - It’s not sexy and it’s not cool!! However, you will feel safe on a flight wearing MC Hammer pants. In case of an emergency, you know it becomes a parachute.

Shoulder Pads Shoulder pads may very well be the worst of 80s fashion fads. Why on earth did they want to make their shoulders look bigger?

These clothes are so bright, it will burn people’s retina. Many are guilty of owning this bright and colourful piece of clothing! Do you know it was perfectly acceptable to wear neon spandex biker shorts with just a T-Shirt for gatherings? Good Lord!!

Rubik’s Cube This one’s a little tricky. It’s a cool toy but it requires a lot of work. Go figure!

Slap Bracelets Weapon or jewellery? Or both?

80s hairstyles are definitely the worst. It was chemically treated, processed, coloured and not to mention BIG! It’s big, bold, daring and wild. The bigger the better, the more chemical, the longer its stays in one place. We certainly don’t miss all those hours spent bleaching and crimping our hair. So if you’re bored and feel like throwing an 80s theme party, just come colourful from head to toe with leg warmers, oversized tops and punk hairdos (again, think colourful and big or high).

Some interesting 80’s facts you may not know about without Google: • Ted Turner established CNN. • New plague identified as AIDS. • Personal computers (PC) introduced by IBM. • Millions watched the Royal Wedding on television (The royal wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles) • Micheal Jackson released Thriller. • Indira Ghandi, India’s Prime Minister, killed by two bodyguards. • Hole in the Ozone Layer discovered. • Huge poison gas leak in Bhopal, India. • The Chernobyl Nuclear disaster. • Space shuttle Challenger explodes. • Exxon Valdez spills millions of gallons of oil in Prince William Sound, Alaska. • Students massacred in China’s Tiananmen Square.

S

ome people express ideas with dance while others tell a story. These days, of course, we’re all used to the common form of club dance. Clubbing or not, dancing is a great way to build cardio fitness. From the most traditional styles to the more modern ones, check out the best dance styles that would help you keep fit.

Zumba

ADDING A DANCE WORKOUT TO YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE IS EFFECTIVE BECAUSE IT ENCOURAGES YOU TO USE DIFFERENT MUSCLE GROUPS AND THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING NEW STEPS WILL KEEP YOU MOTIVATED.

Zumba dance can be practised in groups at a fitness centre or alone at home and is a great alternative to traditional fitness programmes. It originated in Colombia in the 1990s and as of late, it has become one of several dance crazes that are being used to enhance aerobic classes all over the world. The popular dance workout involves a variety of high energy movements of the arms, legs and hips. As such, it’s one of the best ways to burn calories while having a whole lot of fun. Zumba can help to tone your abs, thighs and butt and is an excellent form of cardiovascular and aerobic exercise, except you won’t actually feel like you’re exercising. But don’t just take our word for it – try it!

Ballroom Dancing The exercise benefits of ballroom dancing apply to all age groups, which is an attractive reason to take it up as a form of workout. It’s not typically seen as an exercise first and foremost, which contributes to the fun element in it. Ballroom dancing often means moving backward, especially for women. It works the back of the thighs and butt muscles differently compared with many other types of exercises and therefore, good for toning and strengthening the muscles in your calves, thighs and buttocks. On top of that, given that ballroom dancing is full of twists and turns, it’ll also help you improve your balance. Did you know that 30 minutes of ballroom dancing can help you burn anywhere between 200 and 400 calories? Try it, it’s true.

Pole Dancing

OPPOSITE PAGE | DANCE TO BURN, TONE AND HAVE FUN!

Nobody would’ve guessed that pole dancing would evolve from one of the world’s sexiest form of dancing to a form of workout. This is because with a pole, dancing has been proven to improve posture, increase flexibility and generally tone up. It utilises all muscle groups and engages them in different ways at different points in the routine. Basic pole dancing builds your cardio and helps you learn to balance and control your muscles. Advanced pole dancing requires an immense level of upper body strength. If you’re looking to improve muscle definition in your thighs, arms, butt and stomach, pole dancing is the answer, though it does some getting used to at first.

Regardless of the intensity of the moves, one thing’s for sure; your core will get the workout of a lifetime! So, get on regular sessions of pole dancing for a fitter (and perhaps sexier) lifestyle.

Swing Dancing The swing dance style evolved alongside jazz music in the 1920s. Swing dancing provides an effective all-over aerobic workout that raises the heart rate and leaves you breathless. Swing dancing may provide a workout for muscles that you don’t often use. It works the hamstrings, quads, calves and the muscles of the inner thigh. It also strengthens bones and builds muscles because it’s a weight-bearing exercise. Dipping and twirling also help build upper body strength. You can burn a lot of calories in swing dancing, though the calories you burn depends on your size and how you dance. The average person burns nearly 300 calories per hour swing dancing.

Salsa Dancing Salsa dance has been around for several decades, but many gyms have recently started offering salsa dance classes. Salsa dancing usually requires you to dance with a partner and features a series of hip movements, twirls and other dance moves. It also involves a lot of spontaneous movements that can work a variety of muscles in your body, including the muscles in your legs, hips and even your arms. Unlike running, salsa dancing does not negatively impact your legs, but it can help you burn up to ten calories per minute. The fast-paced sequences help tone your buttocks, thighs and calves while the moves that require you to hold the position for longer, improve your strength and posture.

Hip Hop/Street Dancing Hip hop dance is a fun and effective way to burn calories and get your heart pumping. This high impact cardio workout engages the entire body and tones muscles. The high-energy dance increases your stamina and endurance as it requires you to move and change positions at an extremely fast pace. We hear that aerobic hip hop can burn up to 500 calories per hour – that can be better than spending 30 minutes on the treadmill for some people. Also, dancing on a regular basis can help you strengthen your heart muscles, improve your lung function and boost your energy level. Incorporate hip hop into your exercise routine and you’d be well on your way to reducing the risk of heart diseases. Let’s not forget that hip hop is also known to contract and expand the abdominal muscles in a series of quick but fluid movements, so say hello to sexy abs! APR 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

ACNE

More than just a sweet idea, a lot of research supports the use of honey as a healing agent. This is because honey has natural antiseptic/ antibacterial properties and can be used to treat cuts, scrapes and burns. We recommend using medical-grade honey products for wound healing purposes, such as New Zealand Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) honey and Australian Leptospermum honey, also known as Medihoney. Apply generously and cover with a non-adherent dressing; change once or twice a day.

Let’s face it – living in these conditions e.g. heat, humidity, pollution can only do bad things to your skin. For some really unlucky people, the battle with acne is a year-long affair for their skin. However, word on the street these days is that yogurt could be the answer to your acne problems! The zinc in yogurt helps diminish acne but also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that help heal acne-stressed skin. Apply a teaspoonful of yogurt directly to your face for 15 minutes a day and repeat this two to three times a week.

COUGH Coughing happens when viruses, bacteria, dust, pollen or other substances irritate the nerve endings in the airways between the throat and lungs. While chronic coughs can be a sign of a serious illness, most people consider the common cough to be more of an annoyance than a health issue. The good news is, when you have a cough, chocolate might be just what the doctor ordered. This is because chocolate contains theobromine, which acts very effectively as a cough suppressant. An exact amount of chocolate consumption for cough has yet to be determined, but two ounces of dark chocolate for adults may help!

TES I B G U B HEADACHES Nobody likes headaches especially when you’re trying to rush an assignment or worse, when you finally have time off and decide to relax. Believe it or not, ginger may work against headaches. What’s more, ginger helps suppress the nausea that often accompanies really, really bad headaches. Create a homemade tea by gently simmering three quarter-sized slices of gingerroot in two cups of water, covered, for 30 minutes. You could also brew a cup of chamomile tea using one chamomile tea bag to a cup of just-boiled water. Allow to steep, covered, for 10 minutes. Sweeten with honey if you want and sip away.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (UTI) UTIs are common, especially in females. Drinking 100% pure cranberry juice has been known to relieve and prevent recurrence of UTIs. Alternatively, you can also dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water and drink all at once. This can be repeated 10 hours later if needed but only if you’re still in severe pain. To flush out the infection, increase your fluid intake both during a UTI and after. The good news is, drinking lots of fluids can also keep you hydrated at the same time!

COLD/FLU We all hate how cold/flu symptoms have the ability to make us so miserable! Hence, home remedies like these are necessary to help us feel better instantaneously such as taking a warm shower. By that, we mean getting in a warm shower with the bathroom door closed so that it works like a sauna. It helps open airways and moisten and thin the mucus in the sinuses to make breathing easier. To relief a sore or scratchy throat, gargle with warm salt water. Try half a teaspoon of salt dissolved in eight ounces of warm water four times daily.

Remember, we’re no experts and home remedies aren’t exactly cures. They only provide quick relief but if symptoms persist, you’ll need to make that trip to the doctor’s after all.

Got Pranked? The idea of pranking is funny but is it still hilarious when you’re the victim? Let’s hear from these students on the worst pranks that they have ever experienced.

When I was 17, my best friend called me and said that she was pregnant. I was surprised because she spent most of her time with me - how could she even get pregnant? So I rushed over to her place and tried to comfort her but she broke into laughter.

I was told that my guy friend got into an accident and was in a coma. My girlfriend and I were so worried, we drove all the way to Seremban at 12am but we found out that it was actually just a minor injury. We were so angry at him! He apologised immediately.

PART ONE OF KDU PARTS

APRIL 2014

unplugged compiled by lainey

KDU University College’s Performing Arts Club or PARTS for short is a club where young talented college students gather to further improve their talents.

T

he club consists of three divisions; singing, dancing and cheerleading. As a club, they think of themselves as a family, where nobody is really superior to anybody. At the beginning of every semester, PARTS holds auditions for all divisions in search of talents. What they have to offer is a place for talents to practice and a chance to shine. Of course, above all that, they offer friends who will help each other along that journey and more importantly, friendship. Two months ago, we were invited to KDU’s Carnivale Freshies’ Nite were students came together for one night of fun and laughter on campus. With activities such as games, lucky draws, opportunities to socialise and to snag some priceless Kodak moments, the ‘freshies’ were kept entertained throughout the night. Did we also mention that there were mind-blowing performances by a very talented few from none other than PARTS? Believe us when we say that we almost needed to pinch ourselves when we were told much later that the performers were KDU students! Luckily for us, we managed to speak to one third of the performers, 19-year-old Diploma in Mass Communication student, Samantha Koh. She told us that she’s known as simply Sam to family and friends but simple..her octave range is not. After all, she is the PARTS president. Having said that, it’s not as easy as just getting up on stage and singing into a mic. Sam tells us, “Actually, the song that we sang..we only decided on it the day before. We were asked to sing the day before the KDU Carnivale Freshies’ Nite so we picked One Direction’s ‘Story of My Life’ and the timing was really bad because we were busy so we had to practice without each other. We only came together a few hours before the night to practice it together. It really was a last minute idea!” When asked if she always knew that she had a talent in singing, she shyly confessed, “As a little girl, I remember singing ‘Amazing Grace’ a lot and every Chinese New Year and Christmas we’d all get together to perform for my grandfather. So, ever since I was four years old, we’d put on a show with Chinese New Year songs and Christmas songs. Just me and my cousins.” Aww, so sweet! But wait, does that mean that she doesn’t get stage fright? “The good thing is, I don’t think I’m ever alone at a performance because I always have friends supporting me. I do a ‘jumping thing’ too just to relieve my nerves. I used to not look at the audience but now..I keep my eyes on specific members of the audience in the front and then..I’d remember why I was singing and I’d feel better. To be honest, I only got over my stage fright last year,” Sam said. As for whether she has started writing her own songs or not, Sam shared, “I wrote an original song when I was 17 years old. I picked up playing the guitar but I stick to only five basic chords and with those chords I write my songs. I plan on learning more chords but..it’s a little tough because I don’t have the time. That’s okay though because I can write with the chords that I know!” CAMPUS PLUS |

of music as she daringly ventures into charming pop. The 12-song album is so radio-friendly that it landed a spot amid the finalists for the 2014 Grammys’ Album of the Year. We’re head over heels in love with her beautiful vocals over Manhattan, a tingle piano ballad which re-enacts a long-distance love affair. We can’t even hate the midtempo Hercules in which she pulls off a breathtaking performance while keeping her voice bubbly. Perhaps a troubling, stagnant time led her to explore new horizons as a singer-songwriter?

following of newfound fans. Ten months after, she released her first fulllength album, Pure Heroine. It wasn’t long before Royals officially became the breakout hit single off the album. Tennis Court also steadily climbed the ranks of hits with its darker, edgier pop style. Think of it as a crazy relative of Royals. The lyrics are such an interesting play with words but before you think she’s crazy, she keeps you grounded with Still Sane. A gentle reminder that despite sounding mature, she is just a teenager, an extraordinarily talented one at that.

ALL THE LITTLE LIGHTS PASSENGER

There are many singer-songwriters in this world but only a few are as unique and profound as Mike Rosenberg a.k.a Passenger. The Brighton-based musician recently released his album

All The Lights and there’s nothing unimpressive about it. All The Lights opens with Things That Stop You Dreaming, which sets the stage for a poignant look back at life experiences. Its lead single, the folk rock-ish Let Her Go will touch even the deepest crevices of a cold heart. Finally, we couldn’t stop listening to Circles – easily the most beautiful song on the album. We love how he manages to engage and makes his audience listen to his every word. As if he knows best and he has penned down all of the world’s wisdom to share with us.

House Mafia, we really shouldn’t be hatin’ on him too much. Three years after the release of Disc-Overy, Tinie is back with a brand new record, Demonstration. With silly puns and repeated punctuations of verses, he could very well be one of the only comedian-musicians in the industry. We found Trampoline, with its drums and rap mix, highly infectious. We can’t deny that the Diplo-produced track easily lodged itself into our heads, drumming away on repeat, followed by A Heart Can Save the World, which features Tinie rapping around a rock-hop battle. In fact, the entire album is catchy. Not great, but catchy enough. We give it an ‘A’ for effort.

My Chemical Romance

Fakes Their Death It all began when the United States came under siege in 2001 during the September 11 attacks. Witnessing the planes crash into the World Trade Centre influenced Gerard Way into starting a band.

H

is first song was ‘Skylines and Turnstiles’, which he wrote to express how he felt about the attacks. He would later become the lead vocalist for American rock band My Chemical Romance. After engaging his younger brother Mikey Way, Ray Toro and Matt Pelissier, they recorded their first songs, Our Lady of Sorrows and Cubicles in Pelissier’s attic. Three months after, they recorded their debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. They also offered free downloads of their music through MySpace, where they gained an initial fan base. And the rest, as they would say, is history. Nearly a year ago, the platinum-selling My Chemical Romance announced that it was simply ‘time for it to end’ after 12 years and four albums together. They said it was time to go, after effectively summarising

and emphasising a counter-culture with their goth-tinged musical style. They were bidding goodbye after spending more than a decade ridiculing pundits, attacking inequality and winning waves after waves of young fans in the

process. Well, in the past week, we learned that they weren’t quite as done as they said. My Chemical Romance recently released a great hits album entitled, May Death Never Stop You, featuring a collection of their most beloved songs such as Helena, I’m Not Okay (I Promise), Famous Last Words, The Ghost Of You and Welcome To The Black Parade, just to name a few. Let’s not forget their previously unreleased song, Fake Your Death, one of the last songs the band worked on together in the studio, three demos and a DVD featuring outtakes from their official music videos. Surprise, surprise! “The title is fitting, because as sad as it was to say goodbye to the band, we look at this collection as a celebration of our best songs, and hope their memory continues to bring joy to you as they did for us. We hope you take the journey with us into My Chemical Romance’s past, and enjoy the small taste of what might have been,” said the band in an official statement. Well, like we said, My Chemical Romance wasn’t quite as done as it said. Yet, there will never be another My Chemical Romance.

THE KOREAN POP CULTURE CRASH COURSE

APRIL 2014

Hanguk It

Like A Pro! Are you new to the world of South Korean entertainment? Ever wondered what the repeated expressions, ‘Aish Jinjja’ or ‘Aigoo’ actually mean?

N

ot all of us are lucky enough to have a Korean friend to walk us through the Korean pop culture dictionary. But that’s okay! We’ve listed a few common expressions in Hanguk (Korean language) that you’d often hear in K-Pop or K-Dramas to give you a headstart.

ANDWAE (LEE KWANG SOO OF RUNNING MAN)

shock, pain, suffering or when you cannot believe something. It’s kind of like, “Oh my gosh!” Aish Jinjja: The standard K-Drama expression that’s often used to express irritation or frustration. It sounds like a curse, but it isn’t. It’s usually said in a cursing tone.

Aegyo: Acting overly cute and innocent to charm fans. Can be done by male or female idols, usually with a cute, affectionate style often expressed through a baby voice, facial expressions and gestures.

COMEBACK STAGE (SNSD GIRLS’ GENERATION’S I GOT A BOY)

Comeback Stage: The first performance in a music programme for the promotion of a new title track or single. Idols would usually have a special comeback performance complete with a thematic stage setup and dancers. Daebak: It means ‘big win’, ‘a great success’ or something awesome. The easier way to understand this is to imagine someone saying it like they would say, “Wow!” in amazement. Heol: Have you been hearing this awkward phrase a lot? It’s a popular exclamation that’s used when a person is trying to be sarcastic or when expressing mild shock.

Andwae: A way of saying, “No, this can’t be!” in moments of disbelief, fear or defiance. If you’re a fan of popular South Korean variety show Running Man, you’ve probably heard this a lot. Aigoo: Basically, sighing in exasperation, but in spoken Korean. ‘Aigoo’ is used when you are in

AEGYO (SEHUN OF EXO)

Fighting: Idols and K-Drama actors/actresses alike have used this and overused this repeatedly. ‘Fighting’ is a battle cry used to encourage someone, and is often accompanied by a little fist pump.

BTOB

S.M. The Ballad Vol. 2

It’s true. Barely a few months after the release of their Thriller mini album, BTOB is back! These hardworking South Korean idols have returned with brand new songs. Its title track, Beep Beep, is fun to dance along to and kind of playful. Followed by the more heart-wrenching Is This The End, which tells a typical story of a break-up, yearning and longing. If that’s not enough, BTOB continues to move us with the beautiful Melody, which can drive any hardcore BTOB fan to tears. A word of advice: If you’re going to repeatedly listen to the album, you might want to put on some waterproof eyeliner. Just a word of caution!

After four years, SM Entertainment decides to bring back its successful group, S.M. The Ballad. The group features powerful vocalists handpicked from the many South Korean idol groups under the agency. However, for this instalment, the lineup is slightly different. With members Jonghyun (SHINee), Chen (EXO), Yesung (Super Junior), Krystal (f(x)), Changmin (TVXQ!), Taeyeon (SNSD Girls’ Generation), Zhoumi (Super Junior-M) and Zhang Li Yin, the line-up sparked much interest when it was first announced. Breath tells a story (in various versions, e.g. Korean, Japanese and Chinese) of a couple that has broken up and miss each other badly. Each version is sung by idol pairings according to their vocal prowess and proficiency in the language. We loved the Korean version the best, to be honest.

RAIN EFFECT

TRUTH OR DARE

Rain

Ga-In

After a four-year hiatus, due to mandatory military service, South-Korean sensation Rain (real name Jung Ji-Hoon) is back - bigger and better than ever! His sixth album, entitled Rain Effect, was released online alongside a host of other music videos. With no title song, it was hard to choose a favourite. We loved the electrifying 30Sexy for its beats and synths. Needless to say, the song oozes sex appeal as Rain really is 30 and sexy, after all. Women (like some of us) can expect to continue to gush with La Song, a Latin-inspired song which features his grungy vocals and rapping. Hold on to your panties, fangirls. Rain is definitely back!

So many sexy comebacks, so little time – but that hasn’t stopped us for making time for South Korean idol girl group Brown Eyed Girls’ Ga-In. She recently made her comeback with her third mini album, Truth Or Dare. As the name would seductively suggest, the album is packed with more daring tracks. So much so that it has been rated 19+. Truth Or Dare sounds like a Korean version of Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines in terms of concept. FxxK U, on the other hand, might sound outwardly trailer trash-like judging from its title but if you listened closely, there’s a deeper meaning to the song. In fact, we preferred FxxK U over Truth Or Dare. Besides, how can one not love the classic disco vibe FxxK U has? Exactly.

EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR (BLOOD) TYPE

APRIL 2014

wellness by lainey

The Blood Type Diet

T

his intriguing approach shows that one’s blood type may determine which diseases or illnesses one may develop. Hence, the book recommends different nutrition and exercise tips for different blood groups. Although there are no studies that show blood type can be a determiner for the development of certain diseases, as claimed by D’Adamo, celebrities such as Demi Moore and Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr have since sworn by the blood-type diet. Wanna jump on the bandwagon?

WHAT YOU SHOULD EAT Type O blood: D’Adamo recommends a highprotein diet heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish and vegetables, and light on grains, beans and dairy for this blood type. Various supplements will also help with tummy troubles and other issues people with type O tend to have, he said. Type A blood: A meat-free diet based on fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes and whole grains - ideally, organic and fresh, because D’Adamo says people with type A blood have a sensitive immune system.

From weight loss to decreasing the risk of chronic diseases, naturopathic physician Dr Peter D’Adamo (also author of the internationally bestselling Eat Right for Your Type) suggests that eating according to your blood type is the way to go for a healthy diet. HOW YOU SHOULD EXERCISE Type O blood: The basic O is an athlete. He/she has more physical strength and needs exercise to release stress, worries, fears and anxieties. For an O, vigorous exercises such as hiking, cycling, swimming and jogging are best - and an a.m. routine would suit him/her well. Type A blood: They are deeply sensitive and need inner resolution, which exercise can help bring about. Hatha yoga, tai chi and qi gong, all of which stretch muscles, are good; they eliminate tension. Avoid aerobic exercises as they tend to fix the body in certain tense positions that can, over time, be detrimental to the joints of a type A blood person.

Type B blood: Avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds. Chicken is also problematic, D’Adamo said. He encourages eating green vegetables, eggs, certain meats and low-fat dairy.

Type B blood: For this group, exercise is important to release tension and help focus the mind. Capable and centred, B types often do very well in sports and bring a thoughtful element to competitive games. To keep the type ‘B’s charged, D’Adamo recommends 30 minutes of aerobic exercise in the morning, plus regular swimming, jogging, yoga, gymnastics, tai chi, qi gong or hiking.

Type AB blood: Foods to focus on include tofu, seafood, dairy and green vegetables. He said people with type AB blood tend to have low stomach acid. They should avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoked or cured meats.

Type AB blood: People with this rare blood type should go with calming exercises. A morning yoga routine helps turn their focus inward while a late afternoon bout of aerobic exercise, lasting 10 to 20 minutes, gives them a boost. CAMPUS PLUS |

OUTDOORSY ADVENTURE AT THE HILLS

by lainey

APRIL 2014

Take A

Hike! They say that the best travelling experiences often come when you travel on foot. Here’s the thing;

M

alaysia is surrounded by lush hills, rock formations and water reservoirs that are often forgotten due to the appeal of travelling out of the country. Why spend hundreds (and sometimes, thousands) on your trip when you can simply take a 30-minute drive away from the city to explore the beautiful outdoorsy world that our country has to offer? Why reduce yourselves to admiring nature on TV when you can see it with your own eyes right at your doorstep? This month, we dare you to go out and take a hike because like they say, the best traveling experiences come from travelling on foot!

reach the first peak a.k.a lookout point. There are about three of them, each with slightly different view and the further you go, the higher it is. To get a beautiful view of the sunrise or sunset on the hill top, visitors really need to plan their time i.e. the best sunrise view is at 6am, therefore begin hiking at 5:20am. Hikers especially love Broga Hill because it offers a good workout session and a rewarding ‘treat’ (picturesque scenery) for the climb. This has also made Broga Hill a highly recommended destination for nature photography!

BROGA HILL, SEMENYIH

It’s no wonder why thousands of tourists from around the globe flock to Kinabalu National Park each year – the regal Mount Kinabalu stands 4,095 metres proud and is one of the tallest mountains in Southeast Asia. Located at Kinabalu National Park in the province of Sabah, it’s also one of Malaysia’s prides. Luckily for the curious climbers, Mount Kinabalu is one of the easiest peaks in the world to conquer as it only takes two days. The eight-kilometre climb

Located at the edge of the Titiwangsa Range in Semenyih, Broga Hill is about 45 minutes’ drive from Kuala Lumpur. To locals, Broga Hill is also known as Bukit Lalang after the local species of grass which grows in abundance on the hill top. battling fatigue. We also hear that aside from proper hiking shoes, rain gear, a headlamp, gloves and a warm jacket, you will also need to bring leech protection to ward off Tiger Leeches! The good news is that the hiking trail leads through pristine jungle with several crossings of crystal-clear mountain streams and mossy forests between the summits. So, who’s up for a challenging and enjoyable hike up Gunung Liang? BUKIT TABUR, KUALA LUMPUR A little closer to home and a star attraction to backpackers, Bukit Tabur is a limestone ridge

starts from the Timpohon Gate near the park headquarters with an overnight stay at one of the guest houses at Laban Rata before heading to the summit early next morning, in time for a beautiful sunrise. Furthermore, anyone of any age can climb as long as he/she is in good health and has a reasonable level of fitness and the willpower to push through fatigue and discomfort. Having said that, it’s also important to note that the journey up includes numerous steps and steep slopes so go prepared with the necessary equipment. PENANG HILL, PENANG If you haven’t been to Penang Hill a.k.a. Bukit Bendera, you haven’t really been to Penang. Known for its cool and fresh climate from the tropical heat of the island, Penang Hill is a popular retreat for locals as well as tourists. To access the hill, visitors will need to take the funicular train service, which can take up to 100 passengers at one go and is available every half hour. If you’re feeling adventurous, however, there are numerous trekking trails from various starting

points in the lowlands to Penang Hill e.g. the Moongate Trail, trail from Air Itam Dam to Tiger Hill, trail from Hye Keat Estate and trail from the Municipal Park. At the top of the hill, visitors will be able to take in the sights i.e. the magnificently spectacular panoramic view of George Town, the Straits of Malacca and the cool weather as well as enjoy some food and beverages from the tea kiosk and several restaurants. GUNUNG LIANG, PERAK True blue mountain hikers will love this one! A short drive into Perak will find you Gunung Liang (Mount Liang), which sits 1,933 metres above sea level. Gunung Liang is divided into two, namely West and East, and it is ranked 35th on the list of mountains in Malaysia. The trailhead is about 2,000 metres above sea level and thus, is a continuous climb. Hence, physical fitness is a must-have for this advanced hike, which is on average a full day’s worth of hiking. The expert hikers have also said that mental strength is one of the main prerequisites as one would need to be given the extra push while

located in Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur, and is part of the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge. It’s also known locally as Bukit Hangus. Although it’s hardly noticeable from the city centre, on days that it’s not so hazy, you’d be able to spot Bukit Tabur from the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). Hikers usually enter the hiking trail via Kampung Klang Gates at the back of Taman Melawati and the climb usually takes about three to four hours. At the peak, your eyes will be treated to a view of the Klang Gates Dam (located beside the hill) and panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur. It’s also important to note that there has been a series of fatal accidents on the trail in the past, and thus, permits are now necessary because of the dangers of the hike. The permit can be obtained at the Selangor Forestry Department for RM5 per person.

‘Luckily for the curious climbers, Mount Kinabalu is one of the easiest peaks in the world to conquer as it only takes two days’

DINING WITHOUT YOUR EYES

APRIL 2014

Forget Blind Dating,

Try Blind Dining! Bored of the average fine dining experience?

S

poilt for choice when there are so many good restaurants (claiming to be good) to try? What say we introduce you to a dining experience where you’ll be required to use everything but your eyes? Taking the concept of ‘blind date’ to a whole new level, this unique feasting experience transports blindfolded diners to other worlds as they bask in the pleasant sounds, fragrant smells and tasty textures of exquisite dining. Guests can even choose to dine with their hands while taking comfort that no one would be able to judge their table manners. Upon arrival at the Elizabeth Fine Dine restaurant at Setia Walk Mall, Puchong, we were seated outside while cocktails were served. Guests were allowed specify their type of menu; we went for the fish. The organisers were

careful enough to not let us sneak peeks of the restaurant while we waited for dinner. Once the room was prepared, our guide approached us with blindfolds what looked like oversized sleeping masks before walking us into the restaurant. Slowly and cautiously, of course, lest we hurt ourselves! Then, the two-hour sixcourse blindfold experience begins. Each couple was assigned to a table and a guide. The guide and the emcee provided instructions for blindfold dining and continued to guide us throughout the entire experience. For the guide, ‘babysitting’ included making sure that we were comfortable, listing out the number and types of cutleries on our table (so that we don’t knock everything over and leave a trail of destruction) and being on standby should we need to step out to the washroom!

THE MENUS | (FROM TOP): CHILLED SOUP, CHEF’S SPECIAL CANAPE AND CAESAR SALAD WITH SEAFOOD

For more information on Elizabeth Fine Dine, visit www.facebook.com/elizabeth.finedine

For starters, we were served the Chef’s special canapé of the day as well as a choice of Red Wine, White Wine or Fruit Juice. It was then followed by a generous serving of Caesar Salad with Seafood and the appetizer, Salmon Tartar. And if you thought that was enough, well, the night was not quite over yet. To wash our palates and prepare ourselves for the main course, we were surprised with a serving of soup. Not just any soup. Cold Creamy Pumpkin Soup. Then came the main course, which was the Seared Wild Fish with Spicy Orange Salsa. It was a delicious combination of spices and white wine, with freshly squeezed oranges, mid stewing and scaring along with fish, fruits and vegetables. Our guide made sure that we weren’t served cuts that were filled with bones, for obvious reasons. Our blindfold dining experience then wrapped up with the popular coffee-flavoured Italian dessert, the Tiramisu. The verdict? The event was not just about the food as guests were encourage to use all of their available sense except sight to savour the dishes. Not only does that require a lot of focus, you’d also be constantly distracted by your

surroundings e.g. the emcee talking, your guide talking, other guests chattering. Did it elevate our dining experience to new sensory heights? Let’s just say that we ‘saw’ and tasted food in a different light that night!

FIREFLY LANE AUTHOR: KRISTIN HANNAH

Remember what childhood friendships were like? Quite often we become best friends with someone and swear to a friendship that’ll last forever. This is what happens in Kristin Hannah’s touching story Firefly Lane. The friends believe they will be ‘best friends forever’ and talk of the time they’d be old women, sitting in their rocking chairs on a

creaking deck, reminiscing about the times of their lives and laughing. But just what is friendship? And what would you do for your best friend? What kind of sacrifices would you make? Many of us will never know. With this outstanding novel Kristin Hannah shows us what friendship really is and how it can endure the years. She shows us the power of friendship. Now for a few details - without revealing so much as to rob readers of discoveries they would want to make themselves. Kate Mularkey and Tully Hart meet when they are in junior high - both feel they are outsiders. Tully comes into Kate’s life at a low point. Tully is the most beautiful, classiest person Kate has ever met - and she moves right across the street. But Tully has a secret, one she hides behind a lie. Eventually, Kate learns to trust Tully and they become best of friends with a friendship that lasts through college and even as their lives take very different paths. But this doesn’t mean everything is always easy between the two. And it doesn’t mean that one isn’t jealous of the other, but it does mean that they are there for one another. This is revealed in a powerful way as the story evolves.

QUIRKY SPY GAME

APRIL 2014

games by shah

It’s a rare but fantastic thing to find a game that feels like the result of a singular artistic vision.

P

laying Jazzpunk, from developer Necrophone Games, was like tripping over a unicorn that has an appreciation for goofy puns, technological ephemera and Saul Bass (an American graphic designer whose work seems to have found its way into the Jazzpunk’s design). The game’s absurdity will not only leave you with a raised eyebrow, but also a few snickers here and there with puns and parodies you could relate to. Watch out for hidden laughs in this hidden gem of a game. In it, you are Polyblank, a freelance spy for an agency that runs espionage for just about anyone, it seems. Your shifty drunk of a boss

feeds you Missionoyl pills to send you out on assignments that always sound like spy game boilerplate on paper, but descend into complete and utter insanity almost instantly upon your arrival.

‘The game’s absurdity will not only leave you with a raised eyebrow, but also a few snickers here and there with puns and parodies you could relate to. Watch out for hidden laughs in this hidden gem of a game’

What’s unusual about Jazzpunk’s unusual brand of comedy is that it actively lets the player participate in the nonsense happening around them. Funny things aren’t just said and done in front of you. You are invited to poke and prod at every strange piece of this world until every ounce of funny has been extracted. All in all though, keep in mind that Jazzpunk is a very light-hearted game with no deep story or engaging plot. Its mini-games are less than challenging and it won’t kneecap your progress. For US$14.99 on Steam, it’s a game worth playing for its minimalist yet artistic approach. CAMPUS PLUS |

PLUG INTO THE FUTURE OF TECH

APRIL 2014

Best Of

CES 2014 The Consumer Electronics Show 2014, better known as CES 2014 introduced a flurry of amazing products this year. Here, we present to you our top five gadgets and gizmos of CES 2014 that will surely whet your geeky whistle.

4 Lenovo Y50 Gaming Laptop

1 NVIDIA Tegra K1 Mobile Processor The first NVIDIA mobile processor to support the CUDA platform, the NVIDIA K1 also supports DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.4, tessellation and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. Even more impressive is the fact that the K1 has 192 Kepler-based GPU cores. As a comparison, Tegra 4’s GPU contains only 72-cores. To put all that in layman’s terms, expect even more unbelieveable graphics performance, powerful computing and unique features in every Tegra K1-powered mobile device!

2 Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Sony has finally unveiled what is every tech geek’s dream since the world started loving large-screen smartphones: a flagship smartphone in a small form factor. The 4.3-inch Xperia Z1 Compact ticks all the right boxes in terms of hardware - it’s essentially a shrunken Xperia Z1 with the exception of a 4.3-inch 720p display instead of a 5-inch full HD one.

3 Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon The refreshed Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon now comes with Intel Haswell processors, a supersharp 2560 x 1440-inch ColorBurst touch display while somehow being both slimmer and lighter than 2013’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch. How can you say no to a laptop made from carbon fibre - and one that Lenovo claims to be ‘virtually indestructible’?

On the consumer front, Lenovo has finally branded its Y-series laptops as more than just multimedia laptops. The Y40 and Y50, which replace the Y410p and Y510p respectively, now pack entry-level gaminggrade GPUs. The Y40 sports an AMD Radeon R9 270M GPU, while the Y50 will pack the stillunannounced NVIDIA GeForce GTX860M - the first Lenovo Y-series to feature a GTX-level GPU.

5 Pebble Steel Finally, a smartwatch that looks like a regular watch. The Pebble Steel is now available with metal and even leather straps, and features all the functionality of the old Pebble with new inclusions like a larger, thinner screen as well as a RGB LED on the bottom left for notifications. it’s also now protected with Corning Gorilla Glass.

D

on’t go thinking this is a bargain basement offering, because it carries a mid to high tier price tag. The Q5 slides in below the fully touchscreen BlackBerry Z10 and its keyboard brethren the BlackBerry Q10, perhaps in a vague attempt to catch the eye of the Curve generation. What you get on the Q5 is the same, oddly proportioned 3.1-inch, 720p IPS LCD display you find on the BlackBerry Q10, 1.2Ghz dualcore processor, 2GB of RAM, microSD slot, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, 4G and a 2180mAh battery. Of course, below the rather square screen you’ll also find a 35-key physical QWERTY keyboard, which sports isolated keys instead with the side-by-side layout on the Q10. BlackBerry has said that the Q5 is targeted at the younger generation that generally shares content, likes to be connected with mates and wants its freedom – although it’s not exactly the handset you’d want to be showing off to your friends.

‘Q’ UP FOR THE MOST AFFORDABLE BLACKBERRY The Q5 comes running the latest version of the firm’s new software – BlackBerry 10.1. The painfully slow boot up time persists from the previous handsets, with the Q5 taking over a minute from switch on to home screen – pretty much double that of its rivals. It’s not clear why the BB10 takes so long to boot, but it does. Sure it’s not a huge problem but everyone is busy. We might as well go back to hand writing letters and licking stamps. The big selling point for the BlackBerry Q5 is its physical keyboard – that and its lower price tag compared with the only other QWERTY keyboard phone on the market worth considering, the BlackBerry Q10. Those who don’t fancy an old-school, button-laden handset will ignore the Q5, heading instead

BlackBerry 10 gets ever so slightly more affordable with the introduction of the BlackBerry Q5 to the Canadian firm’s smartphone line-up. in the direction of a shiny full touchscreen device, but those still hankering for the 35 keys of joy will be sniffing around this smartphone. While the Q5 boasts one of the best QWERTY keyboards on the smartphone market, we unfortunately can’t say it lives up to the same billing. Even though the gaps between the keys make it look like a wellspaced offering, the fact of the matter is that the buttons are actually smaller than BlackBerry Q10, making them trickier to hit and increasing the number of typos we experience. The BlackBerry Q5 is difficult to love. Sure, it’s got all the core smartphone features, but

it doesn’t really excel at anything, apart from perhaps web browsing, but even that’s hampered somewhat by the pokey 3.1-inch display. We liked: Decent web surfing performance Inclusion of 4G and NFC BlackBerry Hub We disliked: Chunky, overly plastic design Keyboard keys are a tad too small 3.1-inch display PRICE: RM1,250 APR 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

THE FEISTY FELINO CB7

APRIL 2014

Sorry, We Made An Awesome Car, Aye Four years in the making and from the wintry wilds of Canada is the super cool supercar Felino CB7. With a throbbing, natural breathing V8 motor up front and a flowing Beetle-back at the rear, it’s a ground-up purpose-built two-seat sports car designed for track use, but in Felino’s words, ‘potentially street legal’.

76

T

he CB7 boasts the magical 50/50 weight distribution and, at 4,191mm long and 1,930mm wide, is broader than Ferrari’s California and some 60cm shorter than a Lamborghini Aventador. It’s very light too. 1,135kg light. That’s thanks to cast aluminium suspension parts and a body made of either carbon or composite panels. Even the dashboard is made of carbon fibre. It has the face of an angry robot and front wheel arches swelling well proud of the nostril-littered bonnet. Unusually for a sports car, the door windows are large and the doors themselves sweep up into the broad dominating rear arches. At the back, there’s a long split rear window and tapered tail into

which the rear LED lights, integral spoiler and protruding diffuser all pout. As a standard, the Felino features a mouldedcarbon driver’s seat, six-point safety harnesses, removable steering wheel and on-board data acquisition hardware. It also comes with side and rear view cameras. Performance stats are as yet undisclosed, but we’re sure this will be a mid-three-second to 62 chariot. Well, the new Corvette C7 Stingray weighs 1,499kg, and with 454bhp, the base model will get to 62 in 4.2 seconds and up to 195mph. We’re willing to bet the Felino uses a similar 6.2-litre V8, together with six-speed manual cog box. Don’t forget, the CB7 has more power (525bhp) and less flab (1,135kg), see?

HUMOUR

What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A THESAURUS. Q: Did you hear about the race between the lettuce and the tomato? A: THE LETTUCE WAS AHEAD AND THE TOMATO WAS TRYING TO ‘KETCHUP’!

A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, “Ugh, that’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen!” The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, “The driver just insulted me!” The man says, “You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I’ll hold your monkey for you.” 80
