Built to Impress Sunway University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Sunway Group’s Chief Executive Officer of Education and Healthcare Division, Dr Lee Weng Keng and Sunway Education Group and Sunway University’s Senior Executive Director, Dr Elizabeth Lee officiated the celebration of Sunway University’s new building last month. This new RM350 million majestic building is equipped with advanced academic facilities, including a state-of-the-art auditorium and modern lecture halls. Moreover, a FIFA certified synthetic turfed football field, tennis courts and other sporting facilities are also built. In addition, various modern facilities are also being offered, such as biological science labs; industrial incubators; toxicology, cell and molecular labs; psychology observation rooms; recording studios; and much more. Furthermore, the library has also been modified to enhance studying efforts. It is now equipped with print, audio-visual and e-resource collections with a total of 285,000 titles. Also, collaborative study zones; group project rooms; personal study spaces; viewing rooms; IT zones; and even a drink and phone breakout area have also

been set up in the library. The opening hours of the library has also been extended, allowing students to study, even after the main area is closed. This new environmentally-friendly building, which is

more than 880,000 square feet can accommodate about 9,000 students. Wilkinson also stated joyfully, “This is one small step for me, one giant step for Sunway University.”

Climbing for a Cause This April, two lecturers from the University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus, Dr Ting Kang Nee and Dr Yvonne Mbaki, will be hiking to the peak of Naya Kanga (5846m) in Kathmandu, Nepal. This event, named ‘Climb for Life 2’ aims to raise funds to support the pre-school education for children from the Penan community in Sarawak. As the Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, Dr Ting said that the Penans’ lifestyle and livelihood are hugely influenced by the loss of forests. Moreover, they have to leave their homes at the age of six to study at boarding school without any knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia or English. “I strongly believe empowering their young generations with education will be the most practical way to lift them up from poverty and to support their transition to live in a ‘modern’ society,” she added. In addition, she expects to raise at least RM35,000 to provide pre-school education for 30 children at Long Itam and Long Kawi villages.

THE PERFECT ANGLE Take a look at the inside of the Philips Fidelio L2B0 and it becomes clear why this pair of headphones gives you top-quality audio. For starters, it has pre-tilted drivers that are angled to deliver sound directly into the ear canal. The result? Better soundstage. EXPERTLY CRAFTED To reduce unwanted vibration and resonance, Philips used aluminium for their earshells. There’s also a layer of engineering plastics for better rigidity. This translates into highly accurate audio, regardless of the genre. BEAUTIFUL AUDIO When it comes to headphones, drivers play the most important part in determining sound quality. In the Fidelio L2B0, two 40mm neodymium drivers are used, both with vents in the centre. These vents help to enhance both middle and low frequencies for better audio reproduction. MAXIMUM CONVENIENCE What’s great about the Fidelio L2B0 is the fact that it comes with an in-line universal remote that comes with an integrated microphone. Apart from that there’s a 6.3mm adapter and even a pouch for added convenience. SEXY & COMFORTABLE The Fidelio L2B0 not only sounds good, it looks good. There’s black leather all around, with red stitching, which makes the Fidelio L2B0 highly pleasing to the eyes. Apart from that, the ear-pads make use of memory foam that guarantees a snug fit every time.

As for Taylor’s College, more than 1,800 students participated in the 2014 i-graduate Student Barometer survey, which was conducted from October to December 2014. The Student Barometer benchmark evaluated universities and colleges in various aspects, including the content and quality of learning, the standards and quality of accommodation provided, as well as the facilities and student support provided by the staff. According to Taylor’s College’s President, Lim Tou Boon, it is very important to give the best start for the students to shape their future. Therefore, by having a standardised and detailed i-graduate Student Barometer, it allows them to learn and to elevate their own standards effectively for improvement. Universities with Tier 1 Status Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) - these are the first three institutions to receive Tier 1 Status by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). These universities were awarded the status, as they provide curriculum that’s able to enhance the employability of students by fast-tracking them to a professional accounting qualification. The status represents CIMA’s aim to help Malaysia towards producing 60,000 accountants by the year 2020. It is also a new global initiative to recognise the accounting degrees of reputable universities around the world and award them with 12 exemptions in the CIMA Professional Qualification. This recognition for the universities holds a lot of appeal for students. From now on, accounting students will be able to complete the qualification with just five exams, and may undertake them any time of the year as they are all based online. They will also have the chance to graduate with two qualifications, which is their accounting degree and a CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting.

Help East Malaysian Kids Stay In School The students of Taylor’s College did their part for the local education scene recently by reaching out to East Malaysian kids and motivating them to continue studying. The efforts in question were part of the ‘Make A Difference United’ programme (MADU), which is a resident community service initiative carried out by Taylor’s College students annually since 2005. The aim this year was to address the rising number of dropouts among East Malaysian students. According to a survey, it was revealed that the main reason for the dropouts was that they felt academically unprepared for examinations in addition to the lack of parental involvement. The project was executed by having the MADU volunteers interact with children aged between eight to 15 years old, and to help them handle anxiety caused by exams. Besides that, the volunteers also shared practical learning and relaxation skills with the kids to help ease their fear of exams. In order to fund the project, the students of Taylor’s College had organised a ‘Sponsor a Kid’ campaign beforehand which managed to raise a whopping RM13,000.

no stranger to the community as they have been continuously supportive since the inception of the club. In 2010, UTAR students had also raised funds to build a library for the Tronoh Mines New Village that now serves as a sweet spot for villagers to read and for students to do their revision. Village Head, Chan Ah Lok revealed that the village had benefited greatly from collaborations with UTAR over the past few years.

As part of its commitment to cultivate a pool of industryready graduates, INTI International University and Colleges (INTI) announced a strategic collaboration with the world’s largest online professional network, LinkedIn. The partnership between INTI and LinkedIn is in line with INTI’s #rethinkEDU initiative, which intends to transform the public’s perception of the roles of higher learning institutions by shifting the focus beyond the typical classroom experience. Through a joint effort with LinkedIn, students are exposed to briefing and facilitation workshops that will professionally prepare and equip them with critical skills and tools to enter the workforce. Elaborating on the collaboration, INTI’s Chief Executive Officer, Rohit Sharma said, “Placing our students on the world’s largest networking platform, LinkedIn, will ultimately put them on an advantageous position in view of the borderless competitive talent scene.” The collaboration is believed to go a long way in assisting students at INTI to discover their dream jobs by maximising LinkedIn’s powerful network tool to connect with industry professionals, enhance graduates’ visibility in the competitive job space and access more jobs either in or outside of Malaysia.

A Night Out with the Boyce All thanks to our friends at Livescape, the band of highly talented brothers known as Boyce Avenue was in town as part of their Asia tour. Made up of brothers Alejandro, Fabian and Daniel, Boyce Avenue performed their first-ever Malaysian concert at KL Live, Life Centre on 12th February. As the current most viewed independent band in the world, with over 6.6 million subscribers on YouTube, it came as no surprise that the much-anticipated show attracted over 2,000 fans. The concert blasted off with an opening act from our local musician, Narmi, as well as rising star, Elizabeth Tan. Together, the two performed a number of original songs as well as covers, with the highlight being great renditions of Jason Mraz’s ‘Lucky’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Love Never Felt So Good’. After the opening acts, the night continued as the band took to the stage to perform. The crowd was fully pumped as the band serenaded the fans with their best-known covers as well as a number of original songs from their debut album, ‘No Limit’. The outstanding moment of the night however, arrived when the band took to the stage to sing a cover of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ and the crowd sang along. It was, after all, just two days prior to Valentine’s, which made the song all the more appropriate.

Stellar Cast Joins Woody Allen’s New Project Woody Allen has plans to come up with a new movie and according to reports, Kristen Stewart, Bruce Willis and Jesse Eisenberg will star in it. Sadly, that’s about all the information there is about the upcoming movie, save for the fact that Letty Arsonson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Edward Walson will also be involved in some capacity. The casting of Stewart comes right after she won Best Supporting Actress at the 40th Cesar Film Awards, for her role in psychological drama ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’. This is quite the achievement, as she’s the first American actress to win this award, which is France’s equivalent of an Oscar. It looks like Stewart’s plans to take a break has to be put on hold; the celebrity said a couple of months ago that she’s been working “for a solid two years” and needed some time to breathe. She also said that she’s been enjoying taking steps away from the spotlight to relax and focus on other hobbies. 18

A New Alien Confirmed Neill Blomkamp last month confirmed that he would be directing the next ‘Alien’ movie. While solid details are practically non-existent, Blomkamp has tweeted a number of concept art from the upcoming movie and it looks like there’s going to be a lot of changes in it. He said during an interview that the concept art was actually created by him, after he spent time working with Sigourney Weaver in ‘Chappie’. He said, “When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work on Chappie. And when I wasn’t needed in the edit, I could think about Alien. So, I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well.” The Alien film franchise is a series of science fiction horror film that centres on Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley, and her battles against an extraterrestrial race. The first movie was released in 1979, and led to three sequels, alongside a variety of print material and video games.

He Lived Long and Prospered Well Leonard Nimoy, best known for his role as Mr Spock in the original ‘Star Trek’ series, left us last month to return to the stars. Though no longer with us, the late Nimoy will be remembered well among ‘Trekkies’ (as ‘Star Trek’ fans are commonly known as), thanks to the fact that there’s a virtual statue of the man in the MMORPG ‘Star Trek Online’. Game developer, Cryptic Studios wanted to tribute something in his memory, so they created a permanent memorial to him and his work on the series. The memorial is of him delivering the Vulcan salute, with an inscription of his iconic phrase “Live Long and Prosper”. In addition, there’s a plaque on every accessible planet in the game, with the names of ‘Star Trek’ actors who have passed away on them. The original ‘Star Trek’ series ran from 1966 to 1969, and Mr Spock is one of the most recognised characters from the series. Spock is a half-Vulcan, half-human hybrid and is the First Officer as well as Science Officer on board the U.S.S. Enterprise. As for ‘Star Trek Online’, it’s a freeto-play game that can be downloaded via Steam.

Pranks And Jokes Await You! Your inner child will likely smile with glee this April, because Cartoon Network will be offering several good shows for you to watch. However, it’s not a fight between a cat and a mouse anymore. It is a show about a house-dog, Don, and his brother, an ex-army dog, Colonel Bubba, who are in a battle with their neighbours, a mice trio named Charly, Marly and Larry! Will Don and the terrific trio be friends? Or will they remain as enemies? Make sure you are on Channel 616 on 5th April at 9.30 am to see how it begins. Next, one of the biggest gaming icons, Sonic the Hedgehog is back with a brand new look! Catch ‘Sonic Boom’ on 11th April at 9.30 am and join Sonic’s new adventures in a new world that’s filled with fun. Lastly, if you’re a huge fan of Gumball, we have good news for you as Gumball and Finn will be spending their weekends with you, at 11.30 am in ‘Finn & Gumball’s Amazing Adventures’. Justin Bieber Roasted by Fellow Stars Despite his recent displays of reckless behaviour, which included charges of driving under the influence and vandalising his neighbour’s home, Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber seemed ready to turn his back on all that at the taping of his Comedy Central roast. What’s that you ask? It’s a series that features a celebrity who willingly puts himself up on stage to be ridiculed by his peers, whether personally or professionally. At the most recent instalment, Bieber was treated to a night of verbal zingers by comedians who did not hold back the least bit. The host for the night, Kevin Hart got things off to a rousing start by saying: “This is like suicide. Why would you do it?... (You’re) a huge success that confuses everybody over 14.” Chris D’Elia was brutal, as he said: “You have it all, except love, friends, good parents and a Grammy.” By the end of the evening, Bieber was humorously lowered from the ceiling to the stage wearing white angel wings. What came out of his mouth next wasn’t quite so divine though: “What happens when you give a teenager $200 million? You get a bunch of has-beens calling you a lesbian for two hours.”

Boon Heong Says Farewell to BAM Last month, Tan Boon Heong officially submitted his resignation letter to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). Tan exits the badminton scene after 11 years and a rather successful run with badminton partner, Koo Kien Keat from 1996 to 2013. The resignation of Tan follows the departure of Hoon Thien How and Lim Khim Wah. While it is unconfirmed what Tan will do, there are rumours saying that he will join Kien Keat, who has gone professional. Over the years, the duo have achieved some great things, including winning gold medals in the 2006 Doha Asian Games and the All-England title in 2007. In Copenhagen last year, Kien Keat partnered with Boon Heong, but they lost to Taiwan’s Lee Sheng-Mo and Tsai Chai-hsin.

Tan Boon Heong (right) and Koo Kien Keat were Malaysia’s best badminton doubles pair for the past decade.

Safety First If you’re someone who loves motorsports, particularly of the Formula 1 variety, then you’ll know that MercedesBenz cars have been featured as both Safety and Medical cars since 1996. This year, it’s going to be the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT-S that will fill the shoes of Safety Car, while the Medical Car role will be filled by the Mercedes C 63 S Estate. The new GT S is equipped with a four litre twin-turbo engine that churns out 510hp and 650 Nm of torque. With these figures, the car will get you from 0-100 km/h in a mere 3.8 seconds. Driving this beast will be Bernd Maylander, who has driven the F1 Safety Car for the past 15 years. As for the C 63 S Estate, the same twin-turbo engine as the GT S is used, but more torque is squeezed out from it. There’s 700 Nm of torque under the hood, which will give an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. Driving it will be Alan van der Merwe, with FIA Head Physician, Dr. Ian Roberts in the passenger seat.

APRIL 2015

Dressed to Humour I

t’s the month of April Fool’s, so what better time than now to go a little crazy and be a little more bold with your wardrobe? For those who worship at the altar of Minimalism, fret not; you don’t have to go into full clown-mode. You could just incorporate small doses of humour into your apparel, be it a cap with a snarky message, or a pair of socks that are considerably more fun than your average school pair. For the rest of us, don’t be afraid to break out those T-shirts that shamelessly declare your love for food (or whatever floats your boat), or nostalgia-inducing kicks. It may not be your usual choice of outfit, but it’ll be worth it just to put a smile on someone’s face, even your own. If you don’t seize the chance to have fun with fashion now, the joke’s really on you.

WACKY RUNWAY FASHION

by rachel fong

APRIL 2015

Viktor & Rolf injected major quirk into what would normally be straight-up pretty, frothy ball gowns, by introducing huge gaping holes into poofy tulle skirts. Inspiring.

St yle Me

Chanel’s Spring/ Summer 2013 collection had fashionistas scrambling to get their hands on this hula hoop bag.

ly il S D

resses with gaping holes punctured through them, gloves that resemble hands cupping a chest, and tunics specially cut out to display male genitalia these must all be costume ideas for Halloween. Well, they’re not. What we just described are designs that have actually walked the runway, worn by actual models and shown to the world just a couple of months ago.

As outlandish and shocking as they may be, designs like these are what keep the world enthralled and shake up the routine. Wouldn’t it be boring if fashion never pushed the envelope and only gave us glamorous gowns, and welltailored suits?

Japanese designer Seo Hideki left a deep impression on fashion watchers everywhere with this design. We still can’t figure out what it is, and probably aren’t supposed to.

Now that we’re in the month of April Fool’s, it seems as good a time as any to bring forward some of the most eyebrow-raising designs that have ever seen the light of day. As serious a business as fashion may seem sometimes, here’s proof that designers are capable of cracking a joke or two as well (when it comes to their designs). Jokes aside, these dresses also show off the melting pot of creativity that is fashion. Looking at all these outfits, doesn’t it make you wonder what goes on inside the minds of your favourite designers?

This look from Agatha Ruiz de la Prada’s Autumn Winter 2009/2010 collection reminds us of a character from ‘Aaahh!!! Real Monsters’.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac left us with mixed feelings for Kermit the Frog when he knitted dozens of them into a jacket.

Iris van Herpen, who used to intern at Alexander McQueen, gave us a serpentfilled dress that would work great on scaring off bad dates.

Jeremy Scott made headlines last year when he used Barbie as the main inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2015 show, resulting in looks like this pink promready confection.

Black Swan by Anna Monica Febrianty, 21, Indonesian

Anna Monica Febrianty’s collection is based on the shape, structure and history of the swan, and draws inspiration from the movie ‘Black Swan’, which stars Natalie Portman. The designs aim to chart the transformation of a woman from an insecure wallflower to one who is comfortable in her own skin and is independent. It’s also catered towards businesswomen between the ages of 25 and 35 who are as daring as they are expressive. Apart from the theme, the pieces are also tied together by the fabrics, which comprise of cross stitch cotton and corduroy. These materials were chosen in order to convey harmony and luxury across the collection.

Spanning two years and offering a broad range of fashion design disciplines, students enrolled here receive tutelage from professionals with industry experience and are encouraged to explore their creative sides fully. In this issue, we have an exclusive behind the scenes look at two of the programme’s students’ creative process, as they gear up for their pièce de résistance - their final year collections. Mush d’Art collection by Joanne Teoh Sim Tee, 22, Malaysian

A widely consumed fungus isn’t what one would expect as the inspiration for a high fashion collection, but mushrooms - or at least, the essence of one - are exactly what fuelled Joanne Teoh’s creations. In her own words, “Mush d’Art could be defined as mushroom in the art or mush the art into fashion”. The final year student saw plenty of potential in the various shapes, colours and details found among different types of mushrooms, and decided to apply them to her designs’ silhouettes, colours and detailing. Thus, the idea to intertwine mushrooms with art for her collection was born. To take her designs up a few notches, Joanne also based her fabrics and textures on the concept of psychedelic art and the art of marbling.

crash course in exfoliation

by ivy chin

APRIL 2015

The b u r c S Club

I

f you ever find your skin looking dull or assaulted by a sudden breakout of acne, it’s usually the work of one major but often overlooked culprit: dead skin cells. While it’s true that we shed skin cells every minute (between 30,000 and 40,000 in fact), as we grow older, cell turnover becomes slower, and those nasty dead cells start piling up faster than trash at a junkyard. The accumulating layer of dead cells eventually causes our skin to look uneven and dull, and might even cause acne. That said, dead skin cells are not a dead end. All you need to do is brush up (pun fully intended) on your knowledge of one thing - exfoliation. Read on to find out how to do it, how often, and what products to use.

Types of Exfoliation There are only two, and they are mechanical and chemical. In layman terms, mechanical exfoliation is where you slough off your skin cells physically, while doing it chemically means undergoing a treatment that will break down the substance that binds the cells, making it easier for them to fall off naturally. Mechanical exfoliation usually involves an abrasive tool, which includes body scrubs, microfibre cloths, sponges and loofahs, just to name a few. Chemical exfoliation, on the other hand, focuses on peels which go beyond the superficial skin, and varies in aggressiveness. Making sure the abrasive tool or peel you use is right for your skin type is very important, as excessive exfoliation can lead to a host

of other skin-related issues such as irritation and dryness. Therefore, consulting a dermatologist first is a good course of action if you’re new to the scene. The three most commonly found types of skin are oily, dry and sensitive. For those of you who fall under the first category, you can go for a scrub that’s more thorough with removing oil, dirt and makeup, along with the layer of dead skin cells. Drier skin would benefit from a chemical exfoliator, which targets fine lines and wrinkles, and restores firmness. Sensitive skin work best with enzyme exfoliators, which dissolves dead skin without the need for a scrub.

Guide to the Basic Tools Exfoliating cleanser: A useful, 2-in-1 product that rids your face of dirt and oil while also removing pesky dead skin cells and other hard-to-budge elements from your face, like makeup residue. Due to its gentler cleansing properties, you can use this on a daily basis, as opposed to other exfoliating agents, which could be too harsh on the skin. Face scrub: Also known as an exfoliant, a scrub is the faithful sidekick of cleansers. Best results occur when a scrub is used once a week on skin that has been washed by exfoliating cleansers daily.

They are usually made in cream form, with tiny beads mixed into them that eliminate dead skin cells when gently scrubbed on the face. Good exfoliants can also double as a makeup remover, removing traces of cosmetic products that conventional removers can’t. As the facial area tends to be more sensitive, milder abrasives such as bamboo fibres, oatmeal and sugar are used as the beads. Body scrub: Essentially the same as a face scrub, what differentiates the two is the more aggressive ingredients in body scrub. As it can be used all over the body and is needed to cover a larger area, body scrubs usually comprise of sand and salt, which tend to be rougher but also more effective. As a bonus, face and body scrubs have fragrant scents, which is said to promote calmness. Loofah: A bath sponge made from a fibrous cucumber-like plant, the loofah is usually used to apply soap on the body, so as to clean and to scrub away dirt and other unwanted microorganisms. It has a rough texture, which becomes soft and supple once rinsed with water. They basically serve the same purpose as plastic bath poufs, but since they are made from a plant, they are said to be better for the skin. It is most suited for use on the body and the heel area.

3 5

Pumice stone: Formed from a substance that is a mix of hot lava and water, the pumice stone is porous and most often used for smoothening dry, callused skin. Your heels will thank you for using this, as they are most likely to crack or develop a layer of calluses. To use it, soak the desired area of improvement in water for a few minutes until it feels softer, and wet the stone too so as to reduce friction. Then, rub the stone over the area gently in circular motions, and watch the dry skin fall off to reveal the fresh, baby skin underneath! Facial peels: Delivering the same effects without the price tag of a chemical peel, facial peels come from a bottle and can be used at home. Peels are a combination of acids that work to remove the top layers of skin, allowing baby skin cells to develop and create a new layer of rejuvenated skin. Salicylic acid is a popular element in them, as it can unclog pores and reduce acne. That said, due to the ingredients involved, this is not advisable for those with sensitive skin or skin diseases.

Exfoliation Step-by-Step After washing your face with a cleanser in the shower, take a facial brush (or a pumice stone/loofah depending on your desired area of improvement) and scrub gently to remove superficial dead skin cells. Apply a facial scrub to your face. Rub it in gently and in small circular motions. Rinse your face to remove the scrub after the recommended amount of time on the packaging. Do not leave it for any longer than advised. Once the scrub has been completely removed, apply a moisturiser (preferably one with SPF) to prevent irritation or itchiness. The SPF will protect the skin from being adversely affected by the sun’s rays. Note: The routine should be done regularly not more than once a week, or twice if you have very oily skin. Carrying it out a few times a week is not advisable as dead skin cells take a few days to accumulate, and you may be ridding your skin of healthy cells otherwise.

EFFORTLESS ESPADRILLES

APRIL 2015

Comfy Sole-mate

Espa-what, you ask? Pronounced es-puh-drills, these casual shoes have been around since the 14th century, when they were first made by the people of Spain. Seven centuries later, they’re still around and are being worn by some of the most stylish men today, which stands as a testament to their unwavering stylishness and functionality. Typically defined by a canvas or cotton fabric upper, and a sole made out of jute rope, espadrilles are usually worn in the summer, and exude a summery, casual chic vibe. Most men’s shoes are worn with socks, but celebrities like model Johannes Huebl, actor Idris Elba and One Direction member Louis Tomlinson have shown that espadrilles look best without them. That aside, espadrilles are made for just about any occasion, short of a black tie event, and go well with many types of pants. Espadrilles can be a great punctuation mark for your entire outfit, so try pairing them with jeans cuffed at the ankle, tailored cotton pants that hit the few inches above your ankle or even denim shorts cut off slightly above the knees, so that your footwear can really stand out.

ALBUM RELEASES AND REVIEWS

REVIEWS

dark sky paradise big sean

Although Sean had a hard time last year, he’s promised to not lose motivation and push himself even harder. Dark Sky Paradise is his latest endeavour, and it looks promising. Kicking off with ‘Dark Sky (Skyscrapers)’, the album gets off to a great start. If you listen to the lyrics carefully, you will realise that this track has some words of wisdom from his father, which is rather interesting. The outstanding track in this

JUST LIKE YOU FALLING IN REVERSE

It has been two years since their last release, but Falling In Reverse are back with their third studio album, Just Like You. Though the members may have changed, the elements that make Falling In Reverse popular are still present. Heavy guitar and hard drum beats are what opens the first track, ‘Chemical Prisoner’. It is a nice song about a person who’s struggling to tackle an addiction. However, it’s

album though, is ‘All Your Fault’. This song features both Big Sean and Kanye West’s crazy and colourful beats. With great energy and exciting lyrics, it’s sad that the two only collaborated on one song. ‘Paradise’ is also another great song in this album. The beats in this song is surprisingly irresistible, energetic and somehow haunting (in a good way). It makes your body want to move along. As for ‘One Man Can Change The World’, it’s a track that we really like. It is dedicated to Sean’s late grandmother who passed away last year. We like this song because it has really inspiring and beautiful lyrics that are accompanied by soft piano tunes. Stay to the end of the song and you’ll hear a recorded conversation between Sean and his grandmother, which is slightly tear-jerking. Overall, Dark Sky Paradise is an enjoyable album from Sean and it definitely warrants a listen, even if you aren’t a fan. We also wish him better luck this year!

one of the songs that leans a little to the heavy metal side, so it may not be for everyone. Both ‘God, If You Are Above . . .’ and ‘Guillotine IV (The Final Chapter)’ are also songs with heavy metal influences, so if you like more aggressive songs, you’ll love these. For songs that are less hardcore, you’ll want to listen to ‘Sexy Drugs’ and ‘Just Like You’. Both are fun and catchy, and have great lyrics. These songs are reminiscent of songs that you’d listen to in high school during the 90s. Some may find it old, while other may find it a trip down memory lane. In a nutshell, this is indeed a special album from Falling in Reverse. There are songs for everyone in this album and the lyrics in some of the songs will definitely get you thinking. This is an album you don’t want to ignore.

Smoke + Mirrors IMAGINE DRAGONS

After the success of their debut studio album, Imagine Dragons has always stayed on our radar. Dan Reynolds, the lead singer, promised that Smoke + Mirrors is a “differently different” album. He wasn’t joking because this album has already shot to number one on the Billboard 200, the Canadian Albums Chart, as well as the UK Album Chart. The opening track, ‘Shots’, is a brilliant pop-rock song with really cool

REFLECTION FIFTH HARMONY

When you think about girl groups, you would usually think of Korean or Japanese groups. However, there’s a (somewhat) new girl group in town and they’re actually from America! We’re talking about Fifth Harmony, who rose to fame in the second season of ‘The X Factor’, three years ago. Now, they’ve released their first album and it’s called Reflection. The album starts with ‘Top Down’, a great retro R&B song with

guitar riffs that makes you want to sing along. This is also a song where Reynolds’ vocals shine. The amazing vocals continue in ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, which is truly an enjoyable song. Another song that we like from this album is ‘I’m So Sorry’. If you see us dancing in the office, most likely it’s to this song. We definitely recommend this for any parties. Up next is yet another song that would get you up and moving - ‘I Bet My Life’. We wouldn’t be surprised if this song ends up on your favourite playlist. It is a catchy, radiofriendly song that you just won’t get bored of. ‘Dream’ is another great song that we think you shouldn’t miss. The instruments in this song are incredibly good as they flow and harmonise well with each other. Imagine Dragons has always had this unique sound that pulls you in and this is highly obvious in Smoke + Mirrors. Needless to say, this album comes recommended.

catchy lyrics and sassy vocals. This is followed by ‘Boss’, which is a song that empowers one with confidence. It’s also a song that ought to be played at any party. Up next is ‘Sledgehammer’, a song that’s definitely a head above the rest of the tracks in this album. It’s incredibly catchy and is a feel-good song that would brighten up anyone’s day. There’s little surprise that this is our favourite song in this album. As for the title song ‘Reflection’, we found it to be rather appealing, especially when the group starts to harmonise. It’s one of those songs that you’d put on loop when stuck in traffic, just to lessen the aggravation. Overall, Reflection is a truly satisfying album. You get to appreciate the voices of each of the members and hear some really good songs! The effort the group puts into this album shows, making this album well worth the wait. You may want to secure your copy now, before it runs out in stores.

music

What Does Control Mean To You? Milo Greene has embarked on a journey that sonically unites each member’s different vocal and writing style. Let’s see how their latest album, ‘Control’, celebrates their newfound collective identity.

What gravitated all of you towards each other? What is it about your chemistry that fosters your creativity and music? We’re all very different and I think in one another, we admired the qualities that we didn’t possess ourselves. When we write and when we sing, each of us brings something unique and distinct to the table, and we learned quickly that the collective balance was something special. How do you guys think you have evolved since being formed in 2009? What direction do you think your sound is going in? We’ve spent three years on tour. We’ve lost and gained relationships. We’ve gotten to know one another with the intimacy of a family. We’ve had our highs and lows and we’ve come out of it all with a new album that we love. It’s a different soundscape for us, but it’s a product of our growth. We still base everything around our vocals, but we built rhythms and grooves as a foundation, which gave way to a more up-tempo record. We’re a collective band and every album will be a new sonic chapter for us. You guys write separately and then collectively bring your pieces together. What are some of the challenges to this and how do you overcome them? Not all our songs are written this way, but many are. It can be difficult to get on the same page at times, as we’re all passionate people with different musical perspectives. We’ve learned to trust one another and in the end, any song we finish has each of our fingerprints on it. We try to improve each other’s ideas, which is the great thing about having a collective of writers. How does your writing and vocal styles complement each other? And if they don’t, how do you find a way to piece it together to execute your vision? Our vocals are very different, but that’s what makes our harmonies and varying leads so special. That’s what this band started with. Writing wise, it’s like a Venn diagram. There’s a huge cross section of things that we all unanimously love and then there are our own individual musical pasts. The “vision” itself is that balance. On different songs on the new

album, you will find pieces of each of us individually, contrasted by the products of our collaboration. What is your intention behind calling your record ‘Control’? What kind of control are you implying with it? How do you want it to touch your listeners? It relates to all your previous questions. It’s about four lead singers and writers trying to pour themselves into one band. Control is shared and ambiguous. It can be both a point of stress and an area for self-growth. We’ve had to work on being better versions of ourselves, so that we could best work together and share control of this entity that we’ve all devoted ourselves to. Listeners can take it however it relates to their lives - control or the lack thereof is something that applies to everyone in very different ways. Do you feel more controlled and balanced after coming together as songwriters and vocalists? How do you ensure individuality during the pursuit of collective flow? I think we feel more balanced now than we did at the beginning of this writing process. Our first record was the first thing we ever did together, so the second album, as for any band, was more of a challenge. But we learned a lot in making this record, and we ended up with an album that showcases each of us. The great thing about having four talented people is that anyone can take charge for any song or idea, and this record helped us learn when to take the reins and when to sit back and listen. In the end, we all crafted it together in a way that none of us could have accomplished on our own. You’ve collaborated with drummer and music producer Joey Waronker on this record. What was that like? How has his expertise propel the album forward? He’s an amazing drummer and his percussion collection is second to none. He definitely helped dial in the grooves on this album. Our own drummer, Curtis Marrero also had a huge hand in the percussive spine of this album. Drums were crucial, so we just tried to pull as many different ideas as we could. REVIEWS shoebox epik high

Known for combining diverse styles of hip-hop together with different musical genres, Epik High returns with their eighth studio album, Shoebox. Considered as one of Korea’s best hiphop groups, we have high expectations for this album! It starts off with ‘Encore’, a track that begins with soft and soothing orchestral music. The second part of the track however, is where the hip-hop beats and rapping kicks in, which is a rather strong contrast. While it’s different, it’s somewhat an unusual way to kick off this album. The next song, ‘Happen Ending’, is a song that would be a great fit for heart-breaking moments in a Korean drama. Here, Cho Wonsun is a guest artist and in her performance, you can hear plenty of emotions. ‘Spoiler’ is up next, which is a song that perfectly captures the anxiety and pain that’s associated with an impending breakup. The best part of this song comes at the ending, where a girl’s voice comes on like an echo, further adding to the melancholic theme of this album. Moving on, there’s ‘We Fight Ourselves’, which features guest artist Younha. In this song, her voice is a great contrast to the three male voices of Epik High. It’s a rather sorrowful song which is accompanied by simple piano and drum beats. All in all, Shoebox is an outstanding album that shows us why Epik High is so respected in the hip-hop industry. It comes highly recommended!

autumn breeze S

It’s been 11 years since their debut album, Fr.in.CI., so don’t blame us if we thought that the group had disbanded. This trio, which consists of Kangta, Shin Hye-sung and Lee Jihoon, got back together to release this five-track mini album as their comeback bid. The album starts with ‘Without You’, a song about loneliness, desperation and moving on without a loved one. It is a ballad with a sad piano melody with the group’s fantastic and emotional vocals. As the first song in this album, it really sets the mood for this album. ‘One Last Memory’ continues the mellow mood, as it’s a song about a final date, knowing that a breakup is imminent. A quick translation of the lyrics tells us that this song is about a guy letting the love of his life go. Breaking the cycle of slightly depressing songs is ‘Utopia’, a happy and sweet song that features plenty of instrumental music. However, with the last song ‘One Fine Day’, the tone once again reverts to the album’s initial moody theme. It’s a slow tune, but it’s also rather nice. Overall, it’s obvious that a lot of work went into creating Autumn Breeze. Our verdict: Grab this album now!

Rookie Idol Group’s Agency Refutes

K-POP CHART

Sexual Assault Accusations

R

ecently, a number of Korean media organisations have reported that a member of rookie idol group ZEST has been accused of sexual assault. The unnamed suspect reportedly performed this misconduct last year in November, when he and the victim attended a party. The supposed victim said that the suspect once again approached her six days later to apologise, but the suspect once again attempted to sexually assault her, but failed to do so. After several months of silence, the supposed victim decided to file a police report on 27 February. Currently, she is accepting psychiatric treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Meanwhile, ZEST’s agency has outright denied these claims and stated that they have filed a lawsuit against the victim for using sexual assault accusations to make unreasonable demands. A ZEST agency representative added, “Starting about two months ago, she began posting (what she claims in her suit) on social media and blackmailed us.” Another lawsuit for distribution of false information has also been made by the agency.

Nine Muses

Home is the second studio album by singer-songwriter Roy Kim. Since the release of Love Love Love, this is his first fulllength release. With Home, an album of nine tracks, you’ll find a wide variety of songs that are entirely written and composed by him. It opens with ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, a song that’s soulful and full of emotions. The piano melody in this song takes centre stage, alongside Kim’s raspy voice. This song is about how ephemeral things are in life, and that’s why we should learn to cherish them. Up next is ‘When Autumn Comes’, a soothing song that’s about everyday wishes and fears. It’s a very impactful song, thanks to Kim’s falsetto in this song. It’s absolutely haunting (in a good way). If you’ve been looking for something a little more positive, then you’ll definitely want to give ‘Home’ a listen. It’s about being happy with yourself, even if you’re alone. Our favourite however, is ‘Now I Know’. There’s a little bit of country charm in this song, which makes it different from the rest of the songs in this album. Although it’s a song about regret and missed opportunities, Kim’s voice is soothing and very comforting. If you’re looking for songs to go with a lazy Sunday afternoon, look no further. Home gets the thumbs up from us.

Although there’s some changes to Nine Muses’ lineup, this album proves that they’re still up to the task. Their third mini album, Drama was made after the group revealed two new members – Jo Sojin, a former member of Nasty Nasty and Lee Keumjo, a trainee. The album starts with the catchy intro track, ‘Pilot Episode’. There’s little surprise that this track is the opener for this album, as it’s something that the group has worked on for quite some time now. Following the intro song is ‘Drama’, which offers some retro-style music. However, it quickly transforms into energetic rapping, before ending with a sweet melody. ‘Choice’ continues the lively affair, with a disco-inspired tune. Needless to say, this is likely the song that’ll get you dancing. The fourth song, ‘Trickling’, offers a mixture of slow and fast beats. Overall, it’s a fun song that does a good job at keeping you on the dance floor. In a nutshell, Drama is definitely not their best album, but we can tell that a lot of effort went into producing this album. If you’ve been a fan of the group, it’s definitely worth a listen.

what does the future hold

APRIL 2015

iPredict

What Do You Predict Will Happen in 100 Years From Now?

This month, we let our imagination run wild and asked what you think would happen in 100 years from now. Find out just how crazy things can become! Ivy Chin, Writer, 23 at Campus Plus Quality of Life / Technology Personally, I believe 100 years from now, we will live in a world where everyone will have a collar-like personal computer that connects and communicates with the user’s brain wirelessly. A speaking operating system/artificial intelligence will reside in every collar to help organise our daily tasks. When turned on, the collar will offer two modes: “Virtual Reality” and “Augmented Reality”. I’d like to talk more about these two modes, but that’ll take up an entire page… Education In terms of education, the said collar can be a very powerful educational tool. Content and information can be fed directly to the students, eliminating the need for pen and paper. However, to ensure that students remain focused on studies, the collar will automatically connect to a school’s network system. When connected, the school will be able to monitor and if necessary, block any inappropriate content. Food I hate to say this, but I can’t help but think that a number of traditional foods would be gone by then. Foods like “dodol”, “lemang”, and maybe even “otak-otak”, will likely no longer exist. I hope I’m wrong though.

| CAMPUS PLUS

Cai Song Cang, Shawn, 24, Bachelors in Communication (University of Southern Queensland), SEGi College Subang Jaya Quality of Life A hundred years from now, I see a world that has evolved beyond petty things. A world of peace, where you can be anybody you want to be, no matter the race or religion. Technology One can easily work from the comfort of his or her own home, and while at home, dive into a virtual world by simply pressing a button. A person will be able to send his or her consciousness into virtual space, a place where distance is no longer a barrier. People from around the world will be able to meet up in seconds. Machines are largely left behind to operate in the real world while the humans thrive in their virtual reality. Mankind has also ditched reality and built a world in a virtual realm. Time would become the new currency in that future, so it’s possible for one to “live” hundreds of years, if they have enough currency. Education Free education will be an essential part of how the ruling party separates people into their social ranks; it is the one and only medium used to program mind-sets and beliefs. Food Because everything is virtual, the taste of food can be tweaked to perfection. When “dived” into the virtual reality realm, electronic pulses are sent to the person’s brain, tricking it into believing that a piece of tasteless meat is grilled perfectly. While a person “eats” in the virtual world, the machine supplies a healthy dose of nutrients and supplements in liquid form into the body. “Nasi Lemak”, “Ayam Rendang” and all that fried stuff, will be nothing more than healthy vitamins and supplements.

Lim Jack Xiong, Stanley, 23, RMIT - Bachelor in Information Technology, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus Quality of Life / Technology I reckon the world will be filled with Artificial Intelligence (AI). We’d live in a world where drones will be used for deliveries and personal assistant robots are used for house chores. In addition, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality will play a large role in everyday life, which is useful for work and education. I also believe that vehicles will be fullyautomated, making getting from Point A to Point B much safer. Education Students can then see the entire world right in their classroom and 3D printing will be commonplace. No longer will there be a need for textbooks, laptops, and such, as everything will be presented via Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality. Food When it comes to food, we’ll be using drones for deliveries, so fresh ingredients can be delivered directly to your doorstep. Drones will also be used to help with crops, so there’ll be plenty of food. Of course, drones can also help to prepare our food, so there’s no need for us to cook anymore!

Lee Chi Kent, 23, Bachelor of Economics, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan Quality of Life I think in the future, governments would have increased their power and will hopefully allow citizens to live a better life. There will also be mega corporations that influence a large part of the daily lives of people. Better living conditions, more job opportunities, and generally, a higher standard of living will also be possible. Technology Tech-wise, I think everything will become smaller and much more powerful, with nanomachines becoming commonplace in our daily lives. Many mundane tasks and chores will be automated as well, with the help of advanced robotics and programming. Education Education will most likely be done online, without you ever having to attend a class in person, and I think self-study will become the norm. Certain professions however, like culinary, will still exist and will be the only classes conducted by humans. Food I don’t think too much will change in terms of food. Maybe more varieties of food will be available due to higher inter-culture interactions. Farming techniques will change drastically though, as the demand for food will increase as the population rises.

Andrew Tan, 23, Writer at Campus Plus Quality of Life I think the future will bring tons of improvements to our quality of life. Flying cars, super-fast cross country travel, and generally everything will be more convenient. Modern hassles will be a thing of the past. Traffic jams, common sicknesses, and even pollution will hopefully be solved by then. Technology I think that in terms of technology, it would have progressed by leaps and bounds. Artificial Intelligence would have improved dramatically and humans would be highly modified (think ‘Deus Ex’, the video game). Augmentations can help us be faster, stronger, and more intelligent. Education I would like to think the education system will be hugely improved. Being a teacher will hopefully be a much more respected and well paid position, with the best of the best educating the future generations. Heck, teaching might not even be a job! With our brains integrated to a network, all the information and skills you need could just be hardwired into your brain. Food Food may not even be much of a concern as I think it will most likely be redundant for most people as it will become a matter of nutrition than actual taste, maybe taken as pills or wafers. Real food will become more of a luxury than a necessity.

Liu Zhi Fong, 22, Bachelor of Geophysics, University of Auckland Quality of Life The future, in my opinion, will bring big changes to how we live our lives. Hopefully, the quality of life would have improved and pollution would be next to zero, because humans have managed to live in harmony with nature. Technology With our current pace of technological advancement, I predict that we will likely be able to create Artificial Intelligence that’s so advanced it would do all the thinking for us. Devices that we can’t even imagine right now will be used by everyone; there might even be a cyberspace that human minds can travel in, like in ‘The Matrix’. Education Education will be even more important than it is now, because even more knowledge needs to be passed down to people. Teaching might be automated and people will be learning from programs, videos and maybe even robots. The education department of the government will likely become the biggest and the most influential. Food Almost all food will be grown organically, as it has proven to be the best and most sustainable, and prices will be reduced because of improved technology, so world hunger will no longer be an issue. There’s likely to be a lack of variety though, as efficiency and cost are given priority.

what does the future hold

APRIL 2015

Rachel Fong, 24, Writer at Campus Plus Quality of life While it may seem like the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, I prefer to be a little more optimistic. Material goods have a way of making themselves more accessible to the masses over time, so I don’t think that will change. Then again, with consumerism increasingly coming to a head, humans might also go the other way entirely and opt for a simpler lifestyle. Technology I think flying cars will definitely be a possibility by then, and air transport management will definitely see a whole new set of problems, like with any other technological advances. Androids (not the OS!) might also become as ubiquitous as smartphones and tablets are now, and that would either benefit or harm work opportunities for humans. Education Charitable efforts might finally pay off and we’ll see a significant increase in the number of severely underprivileged children who have received higher education. In turn, they would (hopefully!) want to give back to their community and bring up more of their own people to their level. Conventional schooling systems may also not exist anymore, as the Internet takes over as the world’s greatest teacher. Food Malaysian food must still exist! Perhaps I’m only saying that because I can’t live without my “Curry Mee” and “Economy Rice”, but I honestly think local cuisine is beloved enough to weather the test of time. More forms of microwaveable or easy-to-prepare food will also be invented, so perhaps whole dinners can be prepared just from adding hot water to powder.

Tee Wei Keat, 22, Diploma in Business, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus Quality of life There is a possibility that most people will struggle, as even now most companies are looking for people with increasingly higher qualifications and better talents. Aside from that, everything keeps getting more expensive, not the other way around, which will not bode well for the future 100 years from now. Technology Technology will surely advance, but being too advanced can be a bad thing because that means almost everything can be replaced, including the human workforce. The most problematic thing is replacing certain job opportunities with new inventions and technologies. Education Even degree holders now have problems getting a decent job, so who knows. Maybe next time, everyone would have to get a Masters or Doctorate to get a decent job. Food Malaysian food will always be here, and new foods will surely be invented as well because Malaysians and foreigners are always bringing in new kinds of food. In the future, we may even see hybrids of these foods.

Marcus Heng, 22, Bachelor of Mass Communications, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus Quality of life I feel that a larger majority of people will go poor as prices of things are constantly rising and never once have we seen prices decreasing even by a little. Even people who are earning average pay are struggling to manage their funds. That alone is only what has happened in the past 5 years. If things were to stay the way they are today, imagine how much higher prices would rise in the next 100 years. Technology Today, technology is constantly improving and making our lives easier. Therefore, there would definitely be even greater improvements in 100 years’ time, and it would be beyond what we can imagine today. Holographic imagery, which used to be the stuff of sci-fi, is slowly creeping into reality, so it could make great leaps in the future. Education Education would definitely improve as there is always more to learn. With the advancement of technology, updated knowledge would definitely be gained by the new batches of students. New scientific discoveries will also be passed down to new generations in order to advance them. Food New and more delicious food would definitely be invented but to be honest, Malaysia has always been known as a country that loves preserving its culture. It is a fact when something new comes along, we as Malaysians will go crazy for it but at the same time, we will still appreciate the traditional food that we have today. 100 years from now, even if there are new and interesting foods, we as Malaysians will definitely still love our local delicacies such as Char Kuey Teow and Bah Kut Teh.

Grace Chan, 25, Writer at Campus Plus

Cheryl Yesudas, 21, Diploma in Media Technology, SAE Institute

Quality of Life Transhumanism (the act of extending human capabilities and human form through technology) will become so prevalent that the human race will face yet another existential crisis of immortality. Nature will likely suffer immensely as population growths will lead to deforestation. Society will also become more segregated and compartmentalised according to economic and demographic statuses. However, there will be a new wave of population who rejects materialistic living. Such communities will revert back to the basics of life, forming a new culture of stone-age living as they move out from the urban landscape into nature reserves and forests. Religion will also perish and pave way to a more hedonistic way of living.

Quality of Life In 100 years, I predict that our human minds will master telekinesis and we will be able to upload knowledge and thoughts onto a medium that is very similar to our current social platform. Call me a pessimist, but I don’t believe that world peace can be achieved in this short period of time. However, we can expect an increase in freedom of speech. I believe this will lead people out of their home country and into another that better accepts their perspectives. As a result, we will witness more migrations around the globe and a variation in belief systems. When it comes to relationships, our institution of marriage would be reduced to a contract that has to be renewed as opposed to our current “till death do us part” principal. Also, ‘Doctor Who’ will still be aired.

Technology I personally envision 3D printing to take over the world of commerce and industry. People will be able to print what they need and innovate creatively. Such a revolution will redirect the power from large corporations to the people. With 3D printing, we will finally be one step closer to an open source world. Education When it comes to education, it will be customised to each student rather than having a one-for-all curriculum like that of the current education system. Food As for food, I believe that real food will become a rarity and maybe even a luxury. Instead, a variety of meal pills will be served: tutti-frutti pills, a brown pill for the meat course and a chocolate pellet for desert.

Technology In terms of technology in the medical industry per se, it would be revolutionised with the use of nanobots to heal diseases. The society in a 100 years’ time will become cyborgs through a gradual fusion of our bodies with technology. Instead of artificial intelligence invading our world, I believe a community of cyborgs is more plausible. Education Education will be free, indefinitely. I foresee an education system that will be standardised across the world through self-teaching methods as well as community enrichment. One thing that I am certain of is that the world will certainly be different and we will risk becoming irrelevant as the world would progress too fast for our comprehension. Food There’s likely going to be more delicious food, thanks to food science. Thanks to this industry, eating food will no longer be the boring affair of simply sitting down, chewing your food, and having small talk. Food science will add flair and pizzazz to breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Ahmad Azfar Bin Abu Bakar, 25, Bachelor of Mass Communications, Universiti Teknologi MARA Quality of Life Transhumanism will be commercialised as more people upgrade and update themselves with technologies. There will also be a large community of people looking similar to each other as plastic surgery evolves into a more culturally acceptable phenomenon. Lastly, the quality of life will see a great divide as the valley between the rich and poor will only deepen. The poor of today will be richer in the future but the rich will get much richer, resulting in high expectations towards the quality of living. Technology I predict that technology in the future will be more invasive as surveillance and data mining become a norm. I also predict and hope that interstellar travel will finally become a possibility. In 2115, humans will have finally reached Mars and take a step towards exploring and searching for other habitable planets and living organisms. Once humans have discovered alien life form, I feel that our belief system would crumble under the weight of such a monumental discovery. Human beings would have to re-evaluate their lives and realise how small and inconsequential their existence is. Education Education would be standardised throughout continents to create a unifying learning experience as the world is heading towards a more homogeneous way of living. Information will be delivered in an orderly fashion via news outlets and educational forums; allowing information to be disseminated equally to everyone. However, the information will be monitored closely to ensure that it doesn’t clash with the interests of stakeholders. Food F&B franchises will become even bigger and eating will be a near-instantaneous affair, with fast food conquering the industry. Cultural food such as our ‘Nasi Lemak’ will only be served as a tradition in important events and will be seen as a luxury. APRIL 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

C+: Thank you for having a career chat with us, Ving. A couple of years ago, you were still a psychology student who was just about to kick start a journey as a shoe designer. What precipitated the major transition? V: A series of financial circumstances led me to where I am now. I had to halt my education because my family and I were going through a financial crisis back then. I decided instead, to start my own business and that led me to the Philippines. I started selling fashion products via my own online shop and was doing reasonably well. However, I always felt the tug to refine or improve products through the expression of my own ideas and creativity. C+: What made you to specifically venture into shoe designing (instead of clothing or accessories)? V: I love shoes and I own quite a few pairs myself. I chose shoes because shoes have a very standalone value. A shoe itself can be an art piece. It’s not only a very defining accessory to a wardrobe but it also serves to accentuate existing curves.

thing about runway shoes, is that it has to be flashy (more of a show piece) in order for it to be noticed; something which isn’t completely in line with our philosophy of creating wearable shoes. Nevertheless, we managed to produce the comfortable Seapunk and Aquanaut for our KLFW debut and we are happy with the end result. C+: As briefly as you can, how would you differentiate VING MING apart from other designer shoes? V: We try to give our wearers an alternate experience through our sci-fi and fantasy inspired footwear while maintaining high-quality standards. In short, our shoes are wearable and also affordable.

C+: As VING MING shoes are uniquely hand-crafted, can you walk us through the design process? V: Our shoes are hand-made in both the Philippines and Indonesia. I like the idea that we are supporting the dying breed of artisans. Sometimes I feel that technology is actually degenerating the human race. My point is, C+: When exactly did you realise you had an where most shoes brands use machines to interest for shoe designs and where did your do the lasting or sewing, ours are done by the passion for footwear come from? hands of our artisans. There might be some V: Well, I’ve always been interested inconsistencies but I believe the shoe’s in shoes, but when it comes to quality is better ensured and there is designing, I think it emerged from this intangible value when it is actually my initial dream, which was to made by human hands. All in all, it become an architect. Even takes about a month prior to that, creating things has from the process of always been a habit of mine. My sketching until the favourite childhood toy was Lego, first prototype. On so I guess that says a lot. Or perhaps it a side note, a lot of is in my blood; my mother once told me our new shoes will that my late grandfather was a shoemaker actually be made using AQUANUT and also a hat maker. This is V: It was our first official collaboration something that shoe nerds and to be honest, it wasn’t all fun would appreciate. and glamorous. The concept of the collaboration was that we C+: As a budding shoe both worked around the exact designer in Malaysia, what SEAPUNK mood board (inspiration). This would produce V: I would say the biggest challenge right designs from each of our unique perspectives now is the battle against the stigma of local made that would still nonetheless, compliment each products. There is definitely a need to cultivate other. It helped that both of us are minimalists, more Malaysians into appreciating our local so that made the entire process easier. The designs and its quality.

C+: In your recent collection, ‘Bladerunner’, you introduced a series of edgy sandals for men. What was the inspiration for this series, and speaking of inspiration, how do you find inspiration for new designs? V: I draw most of my influences from my love for sci-fi and fantasy literature. I enjoy escapism and I always strive to envision futuristic footwear. I’d try to translate those elements into wearable pieces. The Bladerunner is my first attempt at men’s footwear and I feel it can be quite tricky, as men aren’t usually “allowed” to be adventurous. I believe however, such perception is slowly changing. The inspiration behind the Bladerunner is based on a combination of Japanese aesthetics with angular shapes. If you take a closer look, you will notice that the angular shapes are also inspired by katana blades. The key guideline while designing the Bladerunner was to maintain that sleek look so that it can also be worn as a dress sandal. C+: Tell us more BLADE RUNNER about your upcoming collection(s)! V: We are calling it the BUMI Collection. It’s a collection that will feature a lot more flat shoes and [mostly] boots with our usual futuristic elements. Focusing on shoes that you will wear on a daily basis is a direction we want to further explore. C+: On a lighter note, have you ever tried to walk in a heel, to better understand your customers? V: Yes, I have, and thanks to that I understand the sacrifices our wearers bear in order to look gorgeous and elegant. A necessary evil, I must say. C+: Lastly, is there any advice you could share for aspiring shoe designers in Malaysia? V: Don’t forget, ultimately it is a business we are all trying to run. While creativity and passion are important, business acumen will always be the key in fulfilling your dream of being a shoe designer ;)

Of Myths and W

hen you were younger, there’s a high chance that your parents told you not to shake your legs when you’re sitting down, or that you’re not supposed to whistle, or even that you’re not supposed to spend any amount of money at night. These beliefs are based on myths and legends, which is what this article is all about. Here’s a compilation of some of the more interesting myths and legends from across the globe!

The Chinese Widow of Mount Kinabalu Country of Origin: Malaysia We all know Mount Kinabalu as the highest peak in Malaysia and the fifth highest in Southeast Asia. But did you know, Mount Kinabalu might have gotten its name from the term “Cina Balu”, which means Chinese widow in Malay? According to local folklore, a Chinese prince was cast away to Borneo when his ship capsized in South China Sea. After he was rescued, he fell in love with a local woman and bore children with her. One day, he decided to return to his native country to visit his parents. He had promised to come back to Borneo as soon as he could to bring his newfound family to China. Sadly, that was not to be, as his parents disapproved of his new wife, stressing that he had already been promised to the princess of a neighbouring kingdom. The prince was forced to obey, and could never return to Borneo. Meanwhile, his abandoned wife grew increasingly worried, and soon decided to scale the highest mountain near her village to keep a lookout for her husband every day. Eventually, she fell ill and died at the top of the mountain. It is said that the spirit of the mountain was so moved by her loyalty that it turned her into a stone facing the South China Sea, so that she could wait for her love for eternity.

Legends The Changer of the Seasons Country of Origin: Greece Zeus, the king of the gods and ruler of Olympus, had two brothers and three sisters, which included Demeter, goddess of the harvest and Hades, ruler of the Underworld. Demeter had one daughter by the name of Persephone, who was very beautiful. The mother-daughter duo often played in the fields together, and when Demeter was joyous the crops would prosper. One day, while out on a jaunt in his chariot with his three-headed dog Cerberus in tow, Hades laid eyes on Persephone and fell in love with her. Before anyone knew it, Hades had kidnapped the young maiden to

the Underworld. Once she was held captive, Persephone was offered all sorts of delicious food, but took none as eating even one meant she could never leave the realm. However, one day her hunger overwhelmed her and she ingested six pomegranate seeds. Up on Earth, crops were suffering and the people were getting hungry because Demeter was too distraught to tend to them. When Zeus saw this, he intervened and struck a deal with Hades: Persephone would wed Hades and stay with him for six months each winter, and return to earth in spring for the other six. Whenever it was time for her beloved daughter to return, Demeter would bless the land with bountiful crops and beautiful flowers. According to the Greeks, that was how the different seasons came to be.

Yin and Yang Country of Origin: China More than just the long held philosophy that opposing forces are needed for balance, Yin and Yang is also an intriguing ancient tale of strange creatures. In the Great Beginning, there was said to be an entity called Chaos, which comprised the energies of Yin (light) and Yang (dark). When the egg holding Chaos and another divine being called Pan Ku burst, Yin floated up to become the heavens, while Yang sank down and formed the earth. However, they were still fighting with each other, so Pan Ku eased the conflict by pushing them apart, which made him grow bigger and bigger over time. After 18,000 years, Pan Ku had grown so big that the distance between Heaven and Earth was as vast as it is today. At this point, his work was done, so the very worn out and aged creature laid down on earth, ready to die. Before he did, however, a miracle happened. His hands and feet were transformed into the four quarters of the earth. His head was made into the mountains, his eyes into the sun and moon, his breath into the wind and clouds, and his voice into thunder. Lastly, the fleas and lice on his hairy body turned into the humans that have roamed earth ever since.

The Secret Name of the Egyptian Sun God Country of Origin: Egypt The Egyptians worshipped many gods, one of whom was Ra, the sun god. He was believed to have created the world and named the other Egyptian gods. His real name had to remain a secret, however, for he was infallible as long as no one knew it. Once he had created the human race, he turned into a man and ruled over Egypt. His human form eventually grew old, and sometimes he would dribble, just like any other old man. There was a wise goddess named Isis who wanted to dethrone him, so she followed him wherever he went, waiting for her opportunity. One day, she gathered the saliva that Ra had dribbled and mixed it with the mud of the earth, before fashioning a living, breathing cobra out of it. The cobra then bit Ra, sending venom throughout his veins and making him cry out in agony. Isis told him she could draw the poison out of his body, but only if Ra told her his real name. He relented, on the condition that Isis would never tell anyone else. Once Ra was healed, he could no longer rule the earth, so he ascended to the heavens. Ancient Egyptians believed he travelled across the sky every day and crossed into the Underworld each night, providing safe transport for the souls of the deceased.

The Enchanted Dolphins of Encantado Country of Origin: Brazil Do you recall having an attractive, well-dressed friend who’s ironically really into sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll? Does that friend also have an affinity for water and disappearing for long periods of time? We hate to break it to you, but your buddy is probably an Encantado, a legendary creature of Brazilian folklore. Encantados are most commonly viewed as a type of freshwater dolphin (also known as the pink dolphin) or sea snake that has the ability to shape shift into human form. These musically inclined and seductive creatures are especially attracted to parties and are known to dazzle and spitefully impregnate human partygoers by abducting their targets back to Encante (their undersea home). Through the practise of various mind control techniques, the Encantados can inflict illness, insanity and even death. They are also said to be fond of kidnapping children born of their illicit love affairs or just anyone near the river who can keep them company! For this reason, Amazon River townies are often terrified to go near the water. The only problem with Encantados’ shape-shifting abilities is that when it’s a human, it’ll always have a bald spot on top of its head where its dolphin blowhole remains. Thus, they tend to keep their heads covered with a straw hat.

Yamata no Orochi Country of origin: Japan Known as Orochi for short, this legendary eight-headed and eight-tailed serpent is recorded in Japanese mythology and history. According to legend, this serpent would come out from its cave annually to consume a daughter of two Earth deities (according to Shinto beliefs, there’s a deity for almost anything). This tragedy had been going on for seven years and Orochi was about to devour the deities’ last daughter. Crying for their last daughter, the two deities met Susanoo, a Shinto stormgod who had been expelled from Heaven. Feeling sympathy for the deities, he decided to slay Orochi. To do so, he prepared eight towers of Sake, which Orochi couldn’t resist. As all eight heads drank the Sake, Orochi began to feel intoxicated. Wasting no time, Susanoo began to cut the giant serpent into pieces.

If you didn’t know it yet, this issue is our 100th! This means that we’ve been around for a little over eight years now, and in that time we’ve managed to come up with some rather interesting content. In this month’s cover story, we take a look at some of the more outstanding issues we’ve had so far.

March 2007 – The Dancing Girl To start the ball rolling, here’s the first – our March 2007 issue. Featured on the cover is a beautiful woman named January Low. She was the recipient for the Best Solo Performer (Dance) at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards in 2003. We had the esteemed privilege to interview this popular Malaysian Indian Classical dancer, who specialises in Contemporary Dance, Bharata Natyam, and Odissi. As a 20-year-old at that time, Low was exactly the type of talent that we wanted to highlight – young, talented, and most importantly, an ambitious tertiary student. Apart from that, we also featured an Afro-Brazilian slave ritual and did a special feature on the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira in this issue. The March 2007 issue of Campus Plus was truly an issue dedicated to the arts.

June 2008 – The Clumsy Hero Sometimes, we have tie-ups with movies and run contests with movie premiums as prizes. Our June 2008 issue is a prime example of this, where we featured ‘Hancock’. If you missed the movie, it’s about a man named Hancock who has superhuman strength. He’s a good guy though and does what he can to save lives. The only problem? He does major damage to the city while doing so. We also featured Reuben Kang, who is now a well-known YouTuber. Here, he spoke about pursuing his dream and his short film ‘Lock’, which won him the Extraordinary Short Content (Television and Mobile) award in the Astro Nextgen Contentpreneur Awards 2008.

DUFFY TANK TOPS TO BE WON

Below, Felicia Soon conducts a brief interview with Reuben Kang, a talented and dedicated youth from Lim Kok Wing University of Creative Technology (LICT) whose innovativeness won him the Extraordinary Short Content (Television and Mobile) award for his entry “The Lock”. CP: Can you tell us about your background? RK: I am from Subang Jaya. My interest in film started from childhood after watching Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies. That is where my interest in film generally started from and I always wanted to be like them. CP: What course are you doing in LICT at the moment? RK: Currently, I am in my final year doing a Diploma in Multimedia Advertising & Broadcasting whereby I major in Broadcasting.

CP: Tell us, how did you get involved in the Astro Contentpreneur?

DAVID COOK WINS AMERICAN IDOL

RK: Well, initially the main intention for starting this short film was because we (LICT Multimedia Advertising & Broadcasting students) were in our final year and we wanted to do something big so we put a lot of effort into making an appropriate film. Ironically, our lecturers liked the film so he decided to send it in for the competition and I only discovered his action after I received a call that I was one of the nominees.

CP: What is Extraordinary Short Content (Television and Mobile)

all about?

RK: It is a short format which is rather difficult as you try to tell a story in 10 minutes so it is almost impossible for you to establish a lot of things and that itself is a challenge where you have to try to capture the audience’s attention through a limited time frame. CP: What language is this film in? RK: This film is in Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin (China), British English and Manglish. CP: Why was the film in multi languages? RK: I have always been inspired by the movie ‘Babel’ where language is not a barrier. I believe that film has an international language where despite whatever language it is in, people will still understand along with the help of available subtitles.

CP: What was the first thing that went through your mind when you were announced as one of the nominees? RK: When I received the call, it was hard for me to believe that it was true initially that I was one of the nominees. I was not expecting to win however the nomination showed me an appreciation for putting a lot of effort into making the film. This shows that in anything you do, if you put a lot of time and effort into it and you really believe in yourself then you can probably make it happen. CP: Overall, was it a tough competition? RK: From the snippets of the other films that I saw during the awards night, they all look very impressive and that kind of intimidated me. CP: What do you hope to gain from this experience of winning the Extraordinary Short Content (Television and Mobile) award for your entry “The Lock”? RK: Actually before starting my course in LICT, I was working freelance in the film industry and that was my goal as I always wanted to be a film maker. In LICT, my lecturers gave me the opportunity to learn and work with professionals. That is defi nitely an experience where I can be confident to take on a responsibility to do something even bigger. CP: What are your future career plans? RK: Previously, I did theatre with the Oral’s Age (Youth Theatre Company). We performed at the Penang Actor’s Studio, Bangsar Actor’s Studio and KL PAC so I have not only been directing theatre, I have also been acting in it as well. Besides that, I have been doing a couple of short films and documentaries for CSI in Astro. Therefore, I am still very involved in the film industry which is something that I would continue to do so as I have put a lot of time and effort into it. * The Lock tells a story about how a British man’s car was stolen by a Malay thief after seeking for help at a Chinese Locksmith. The plot thickens when the British Man’s ignorant assistant left her car keys accidentally inside her own vehicle and seeks help from the British man who in turn recommends her to the same Chinese Locksmith.

March 2009 – It’s All About That LaMB One of the more exciting issues we’ve ever come up with, our March 2009 issue is truly a memorable one for us. The cover design actually landed us a Best Cover Design Award for LaMB in Asia. If you’re wondering what LaMB is, it is Animax Asia’s first original animation production in High Definition (HD) for online, mobile and TV. We also interviewed Simple Plan, who produced LaMB’s soundtrack, as well as Taiwan-based actress Tanaka Chie, who was the voice actor for Keiko Suzuki, the villain in the series. In addition, we also did a special story about all the characters featured in LaMB, providing detailed background information on each of the characters. Of course, this issue wasn’t only about the anime. We also had a great feature about white water rafting, which is a great vacation choice for families and friends. We scoured the Internet and bugged some experienced rafters to part with their hints and tips, as well as provide some great locations for this sport.

September 2010 – Meeting the Lady We bet you don’t know who Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is! We don’t blame you, because she is better known by her stage name, Lady Gaga. There’s a rather interesting story behind this cover: right after this issue was published, a German, who is a big fan of Lady Gaga emailed us to get two copies of this issue. In his email, he mentioned that he is a “Lady Gaga collector”. In other words, he would collect anything with Lady Gaga on it. Because he asked ever so politely, we didn’t think twice about sending him the copies. The next time you see your favourite artist on the cover, don’t hesitate to ask for more issues! We’ll do our very best to pass an extra copy to you.

February 2011 – The Big 50

Henry Ford 1863 – 1947 Henry Ford insisted on making a car that was affordable for everyone. His goal ran counter to the wishes of his backers at Ford Motor Co., who sought to maximize profits by building cars for the rich. As a key initiator of the moving assembly line, the company mass-produced cars faster and cheaper than other companies, Ford paid his workers a real living wage and, through mass consumption, made Ford Motor Co. very profitable – and eventually bought out those skeptical backers. Perhaps most importantly, he helped create a middle class with “America’s Everyman Car,” his black Model T (the only colour the company produced for years). While he had many personal flaws, Ford’s vision of an affordable car enabled more people to commute to work and be more selective about jobs, eventually leading to more free time, including time for Sunday drives.

Our February 2011 issue was another significant issue for us because it was our 50th issue. To celebrate, we featured all our previous covers on the cover page. As for content, we featured 50 brilliant and outstanding entrepreneurs from 1706 to 2007; there were a number of celebrities in there as well! Apart from that, there’s a really interesting article in this issue, which talks about the history of lipstick. Called ‘Read My Lips’, the article was an in-depth look at the lipstick and how it has become what it is today.

Rockefeller remained a major shareholder although who he had retired from running the company in 1896, turned his focus then to charitable endeavours.

J.P. Morgan 1837 – 1913 Starting with railroads, Morgan recognized the public utilities and steel industries before going on to refinance the U.S. government’s war debt. That same government later investigated the wealthy businessman for antitrust practices. As he testified before a House committee, Morgan told members, “The first thing is character… before money or anything else. Money cannot buy it.” Morgan recognized the importance of strong character and reputation in business. Often mentioned with Gilded Age greats as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, Morgan is regarded as the most important banker to ever live. 24

Jeff Bezos did not invent online shopping but his little online-bookstore experiment has changed the way consumers purchase almost anything – books, clothing, jewelry and, most recently, music, wine. Founding Merrill Lynch in 1939, he taught middle-class Americans that the market was a viable investment vehicle stock for their retirement, their child’s college fund or a rainy day. He realized women could also benefit from investing in education, and held seminars nationwide for couples, with childcare provided.

November 2012 – The K-Pop Craze No matter how much you hate or love K-Pop, you can’t deny that some of their tunes are catchy and some of their drama series are of top-notch quality. Our cover story for this issue was in light of the Korean wave hitting Malaysia, and is aptly named ‘The Rise of the Korean Wave’. Did you know that Malaysia is in fact where the largest amount of K-Pop fans are found? Well, if you didn’t know that, you’ll want to ask some of your seniors for the issue because we wrote about everything Korean in that issue. Apart from that, we also interviewed the founders of BookXcess, a book store that sells remainder books. Remainder books is the term used to describe books that are new, but are sold at much lower prices. It is a fascinating book store as it aims to promote healthy reading habits by selling books at low prices. Moreover, the founders also shared their views on the e-book industry, book piracy and book sales in Malaysia.

December 2013 – Drop the Beat! If you’re a music lover, this issue is absolutely for you because we did a feature on some of the most famous music festivals from around the world. Attending a music festival is one of the best ways to make new friends and kickoff lengthy discussions about the best types of music. To help music lovers connect with each other, this issue had information about the many music festivals located both far and near. Although attending music festivals are fun, it’s also easy to get carried away. Caught up in the moment, one might make a mistake that one would regret for the rest of one’s life. This is why we did some research and came up with a savvy party guide for you to party safely. What’s more, we also did another guide about something entirely different - dress shoes. We know that men’s dress shoes are expensive and you might not even wear them more than three times a year. However, they are a must at some special occasions. And don’t worry, they tend to last longer too! With the guide in this issue, here’s hoping every guy will attend gala dinners in style from now on...

March 2014 – Dual Personality In this issue, we got the opportunity to speak with some of Malaysia’s most popular cosplayers as they shared some first-hand knowledge and information on costume role-playing. They also spoke of their experiences in making their own costumes. In addition, we managed to interview the person behind Future Music Festival Asia 2014 (FMFA 2014), Livescape Co-founder and Director, Iqbal Ammer! We were given an inside look at what went on in organising FMFA 2014, which makes it a great article for all of you who are planning on going into event management! Furthermore, there’s another article in this issue where we talked about makeup. It’s been proven that applying makeup (correctly) can boost a woman’s confidence and attractiveness. What happens then, when you take away the makeup? We could go on and explain, but that’ll take an entire page... Last but not least, we also spoke about the ‘Greatest Gen Y Misconceptions and Stereotyping’. In this day and age, where information about a person is so freely available, we often judge others based on information that’s not entirely true and this often leads to misunderstandings. We dug deep in search of the truth, and the results were presented in this article. And that concludes ‘The Best of Us’. Thanks for staying with us till the end. We hope you enjoyed the covers listed here as much as we enjoyed creating them for you. Stay tuned for more exciting issues from us this year, and for many more years to come!

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

APRIL 2015

T

he next time you rush out in the morning without eating anything, think about this: Skipping breakfast could cause you to overeat. Research has shown that skipping breakfast will result in you feeling hungrier later in day, which may result in binging on snacks. Filling up on breakfast however, will give you better energy, concentration and in the long run, increase your productivity. So we’ve established that eating breakfast is good. But what makes an ideal breakfast? First of all, it should consist of no more than five grams of sugar. Consuming too much sugar in the morning will make you feel sleepy later on in the day. Next, an ideal breakfast should contain numerous healthy foods that provide fibre, protein and complex carbohydrates that is sufficient to keep you fuelled until lunch. Don’t worry, there are plenty of healthy breakfast options! Here are some healthy, nutritious, delicious and energy-packed recommendations you can start your day with.

Oatmeal It takes you about 15 minutes to have a bowl of hearty oatmeal to keep you satisfied and to help you lower your cholesterol level. However, you’ll have to eat this on a regular basis in order for it to take effect. Also, just to be clear, when we say oatmeal, we mean plain oatmeal. Say no to instant and flavoured oatmeal. Of course, you can still add flavour by using natural ingredients such as fruits, honey, nuts, or even cinnamon.

Yogurt Yogurt is loaded with calcium, protein, vitamin D and beneficial bacteria that is good for your health. You can also add some nutritious ingredients like fresh fruits and nuts to give it some sweetness and flavour. It’s a tasty yet healthy way to start your day!

Eggs Eggs are an “egg-specially” good choice for breakfast. They are a good source of protein and vitamin D. Also, eggs are low in calories and provide a great source of energy to fuel your day! They’re also amazingly flexible as you can have them scrambled, hardboiled, poached, pan fried or steamed. Just make sure you use olive oil if you’re frying them. However, if you are worried about your cholesterol, you may want to limit yourself to two eggs – one with the yolk, and another without.

If you like, you could blend your favourite fruits together to create your very own blend of “power” juice every morning!

Whole-Wheat Breads and Cereal When it comes to bread and cereal, it’s best to stick with bread made from whole wheat and cereal that uses whole grains. They provide a bunch of essential nutrients and are also high in fibre. Do take note of the amount of sugar in your cereal! There should be no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving. In short, stop skipping breakfast from now on! It is the most vital meal of the day. A healthy breakfast tastes great and gives you a positive start to your day. You’ll also have more energy for your morning classes and be able to concentrate better.

Fruits and Vegetables There’s really no need to emphasise just how important fruits and vegetables are when it comes to your wellbeing. They’re an important source of nutrients, fibre, minerals, antioxidants, and so much more.

Dirty e l t t i L s t e r c Se S

ometimes, we all need to vent, and in this day and age, there’s no better place to do it than on the Internet. You can (somewhat) remain anonymous and reveal your dirty little secrets, without getting into too much trouble. What we have here, are confessions that are pooled from some of your favourite university confession pages. Of course, we’d never reveal where they come from, but rest assured, they’re entertaining. From the funny, to the downright ridiculous, these are...Malaysian university students’ Dirty Little Secrets. (Note: Confessions have been edited for grammatical inaccuracies and flow.)

Electrified

“Who’s the girl at table no. 56 during the engineering fair? You know what, your 100-gigawatt smile electrified my heart and overwhelmed its resistance. Perhaps, you excited my electrons from its outer valence. However, there are some limits for this excited state.” Campus Plus says: If the object of your affections understands what your confession means, you’ve got a keeper.

Myvi vs. Saga

#5

“I’m seeing an increase in Saga owners and drivers in the Sunway area. Finally! The reign of Myvis is now ending. When I was parking my car at my university’s basement, boom! There were plenty of Proton Sagas. When I parked at the Sunway Pyramid basement, boom! Sagas were everywhere. P.S.: Saga > Myvi”. Campus Plus says: We still think there are plenty of Myvis running around, but cool story bro.

Therefore, I will still attend your lectures as well as tutorials. I wanna express my gratitude towards you, as I got an A- for the subject you taught me, and I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you and I really miss you so much. I know it is not appropriate, but why do I miss you so much even after I’ve just attended your class?” Campus Plus says: Is it just us or does the whole thing have the makings of a Top 40 hit?

#9

Weighty Decision

“I find one of the servers in the cafeteria to be very cute. She hasn’t served my table before but I can’t help but look at her every time she passes by carrying food. She is totally worth the RM20 I spent on ordering the food there, even though I can’t even remember what I ate. Will you be the one that makes me fat?” Campus Plus says: Well they do say people gain weight when they’re in a happy relationship, so...

#10

GST Love

Girlfriend: Boyfriend: Girlfriend: Boyfriend: Girlfriend:

Dear, do you love me? Yeah, darling. Why? How much do you love me? 94% babe... Why is it only 94%? What about the balance of 6%? Boyfriend: GST babe. Girlfriend: ........ Campus Plus says: And that’s how you get dumped.

#12

All About That Food “ ‘Cos I’m all about that rice x 2 Add kicap I’m all about that rice x 2 Add curry”

Campus Plus says: BRB, making a dash for the nearest mamak stall.

#11

PseudoPoetic

“Fly like the wind, Ride like the wind, Flap like a bird, Flutter like a bird. Came crashing down the ground, Splat, crack, whoosh, poww, Feel your blood flowing, Feel your bones cracking, Feel what you can’t feel anymore. Then everything ends...? By the way, who knows where to find something nice to eat around Monash?” Campus Plus says: So poetry. Much artist.

APRIL 2015

A lot can happen in 42 years. However, we have a number of old friends that continue to keep us company, and through the years have become inseparable companions to all of us. What’s life without them, right? Today, almost anyone can acquire a cheap mobile phone that weighs less than half a pound and boasts of decent features like a big sized touch screen. Mobile phones have improved and changed dramatically since its first iteration. From being just a portable communications tool to becoming a selfie-taking fashion statement in its current guise, mobile phones have indeed come a long way. Join us as we take a peek at the evolution of mobile phones, and celebrate the moment where it all started.

The Critical Moment (70s) That fateful phone call was made by a senior American engineer at Motorola, Martin Cooper on 3rd April, 1973. He was calling his rival, Bell Labs’ Head of Research Joel Engel at that time to inform him that he was speaking through a mobile phone. The mobile phone that Cooper used weighed 1.1 kg with 30 minutes talk time and required about 10 hours to charge! Ever since that historic conversation, the mobile phone was made available to the public a decade later.

The Early Phase (80s) 1984: First Mobile Phone Motorola released their first commercial mobile phone, Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, better known as “The Brick Phone” to the public at a not-so-modest price of US$3,995. Compared to the mobile phone that Cooper used back in 1973, “The Brick Phone” was slightly lighter. At 790 g, it offered 30 minutes of talk time, eight hours of standby with LED display and could store thirty phone numbers. However, it would still require you to charge it for approximately 10 hours. 1989: First Flip Phone Designed to fit into a shirt pocket, Motorola introduced its MicroTAC 9800x personal mobile phone, which weighs in at 349 g and only nine inches long when fully opened. Some nifty new features were incorporated into the phone, such as currency calculator, hands-free operation, two phone number operations and more. It was slightly cheaper too, but it will still set you back by US$3,000.

The Middle Phase (90s) 1993: First PDA Phone The first mobile phone to have smartphone abilities was born. IBM’s Simon Personal Communicator was the first mobile phone with touch screen and personal digital assistant (PDA) features in one device. Priced at US$899, 50,000 units were sold in six months.

Press Rewind

The History of Awesome Stuff Revisited!

Ever wondered how the smartphone that you’re holding came to be? Or how humble brands such as McDonald’s and Pepsi started off and became the mammoth institutions that they are today? Well, wonder no more, as we take you down memory lane to witness first-hand the evolution of some fascinating aspects of pop culture and technology. So sit back, press the rewind button, read on and enjoy. The Smartphone Age (00s) 2000: First Bluetooth Mobile Phone Although a number of websites have featured either the Ericsson T36 or Ericsson T39 as the first Bluetooth mobile phone, the first mobile phone with Bluetooth was actually the Ericsson R520M. Intended to let electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers and printers to connect to each other without cables, Bluetooth was indeed a messfree solution. 2000: First Camera Phone A lot of big things were going on in 2000. There was also a huge debate on whether the first camera phone was the J-SH04 instead of Sanyo’s SCP-5300, which was released in 2002. J-SH04 was produced by Sharp and released in Japan by J-Phone in November 2000. However, it has also been stated that J-SH04 was Japan’s first ever camera phone, while Sanyo’s SCP-5300 was the first camera phone in the United States. 2002: First PDA Smartphone The BlackBerry 5810 had taken over the craze of pocket computing devices at the time. The ‘QWERTY’ keyboard and cellular connectivity allowed users to send e-mails, arrange their data and prepare notes easily. These features were considered as cutting edge technologies and were really impressive at the time. 2004: First Ultra-Thin Phone If you think Apply would be the first, then you are wrong! The Motorola RAZR V3 was actually the first pancake-thin phone. It was ridiculously thin – 14 mm thin, to be precise. Besides, it was also the first phone that became a big hit with the fashion-conscious crowd.

1996: First Clamshell Flip Phone After more than half a decade, Motorola released a clamshell design flip phone, the StarTAC. It was a huge upgrade from Motorola as the StarTAC could send text messages and operates on lithium-ion batteries. In addition, it weighed only 88 g and offered vibrate alert as an alternative to ringtone. This phone was priced at US$1,000 and eventually sold a staggering 60 million plus units.

2007: Apple iPhone Everything changed drastically when Apple came into the mobile phone industry by releasing their first iPhone. With a multi-touch screen display, it allowed users to operate their device by flipping, stretching, clicking or tapping motions using their fingers. Apple was the biggest game changer in the mobile phone industry and things would begin to progress even faster after this.

1998: First Candybar Mobile Phone Nokia kicked in with their first ever candybar phone, the Nokia 5110. It was so named due to its size and shape that resembled a bar of candy. Moreover, it was also one of the first phones to have the popular game, ‘Snake’. Although the Nokia 5110 looked rough, it actually had outstanding battery life, which supported three hours of talk time. However, this phone was discontinued inPLUS 2001 and was replaced by other devices. 64 | CAMPUS

2010 and beyond Today, numerous companies and operating systems are available in the smartphone industry. Apple is still leading with its iPhone, followed by its biggest competitor, Samsung. In addition, some other outstanding smartphone makers like Sony, HTC, Xiaomi and many others are also competing with each other. As for operating systems (OS), Google’s Android is largely used on most smartphones. Apple’s iOS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS cater to non-Android users and are popular alternatives.

A Walk Down Fashion’s Memory Lane Of all the facets of pop culture that exist, fashion is undoubtedly one of the fastest changing ones. More than pieces of fabric strewn together by stitching, fashion reflects the economic and social times, as well as the ideals of the society in that era. With that, here’s a look at two of the most defining timelines in fashion’s storied history: apparel and hairstyles.

Trendy Styles 1910s From 1910 onwards, fashion took on a more relaxed vibe overall, or as relaxed as the stoic Edwardian English could be back then. Corsets became less constrictive, and women could finally walk without tripping over their skirts as hemlines rose above the ankle! 1930s From the great excess of the 1920s rose the Great Depression of the 1930s. Hemlines grew longer once more to reflect the conservative fiscal situations of most families, and zippers were invented to cut down on labour costs. Authentic jewellery also gave way to costume jewellery, such as Coco Chanel’s faux pearl strands.

1950s With the war fully out of the way, the 50s were a time of great hope, which translated into outfits in bold colours and flirty silhouettes. Dresses were made to emphasise a womanly hourglass shape, which gave way to bullet bras, waist cinchers and full-circle skirts. Prêt-à-porter (ready to wear) brands also gave the masses access to high fashion.

Hairstyles 1910s Hairstyles during this decade reflected the century before it, which meant styles like the ‘Gibson Girl’ were still popular. The Gibson Girl is a relaxed style, in which women wear their hair piled high on the head in a loosely curled chignon. 1930s Femininity was back with a bang during this decade, and women felt ready to embrace long tresses again after the war. Hair lengths grew longer, but curls stayed in trend in the form of sausage curls, pin curls and finger waves.

1950s War was out, glamour was in. Hairstyles were influenced by French hair fashion, which had plenty of women walking around with poodle cuts and bouffant hairstyles. Young girls liked wearing their hairstyles in ponytails with ribbons tied around them, while more rebellious youngsters worn theirs in a greaser comb-back.

1970s / 1980s The seventies were a mixed bag, with comfort and decadence being revered in equal measure. On one hand, the carefree bohemian look from the late 60s carried over to the early part of the 70s, so flowy tent dresses, knitwear and tie-dyed clothes were widely worn. At the same time, the age of disco came to fruition, which clothed party people in leotards, kaftans and over-the-top jumpsuits. The 80s went where fashion had never gone before and amplified everything by 110%. Clothes were not only colourful; they were embellished, bedazzled and ruched. Women continued to make their mark in the workforce, which gave birth to the wide shoulder-padded power suits. Shows like Dallas and Dynasty had people flocking to the church of glamorous evening wear, complete with big hair. 1990s Glitter and glamour made way for casual chic in the 90s, as youths started looking to hip-hop musicians for sartorial inspiration. T-shirts, jeans, hoodies and trainers became staples in almost every teenager’s wardrobe, and the overall silhouette was loose-fitting. Grunge music also came into popularity during this period, which influenced fashion followers to go for an equally grungy, bordering on unkempt look. 2000s and beyond Since the advent of the 21st century, fashion has become more multifaceted than ever, thanks to globalisation, the Internet, and e-commerce specifically. Mainstream European and American fashion now bounce off Eastern and Asian fashion, and vice versa. This has resulted in a myriad of trends, with no specific defining look for the generation. There has also been a call for more ecofriendly and socially conscious fashion, which aim to minimise carbon footprints and eliminate animal abuse.

1970s Women loved parting their hairline in the centre (and not in an ironic way, at that) during the seventies. When Farrah Fawcett, star of hit show ‘Charlie’s Angels’ appeared on a poster with feathered (read: flippy) curls, women the world over wanted to emulate her. Hairspray bottles were selling like hotcakes. 1990s Supermodels came along and every woman wanted to be them, which naturally resulted in a demand for sexy, effortless looking hair. Jennifer Aniston with her layered bob, the ‘Rachel’ haircut, sent women into a hairy (pardon the pun) frenzy, while Kate Moss inspired a legion of fashionistas to keep their hair straight and stringy. 2000s and beyond As the 21st century enters its second decade, a defining look has become harder to pin down. Major trends have come and gone, such as obvious highlights and crimping, which made a return for a short while. In more recent days, ombre highlights and pastel hair have made their mark.

LOGO MORPH We checked out the evolution of some of today’s most prominent brands to see how they’ve revamped over the years. Believe it or not, but some of the original logos aren’t even recognisable. Need a visual? We’ve included a compilation of logos to feast your eyes!

The Soda’s Evolution Initially labelled as “Brad’s Drink”, Pepsi was created in 1893 by a pharmacist (yes, you heard it right) named Caleb Bradham. Soon after, Bradham renamed his drink into Pepsi-Cola, a title that was trademarked in 1903. Although the brand’s name hasn’t changed since, its logo has undergone a number of tweaks and major revamps. When we think of Pepsi, we envision a red, white and blue circle, waving like a flag. However, a version of the iconic logo that we now attribute to the soda didn’t exist until over 50 years after the company’s conception. 1898: From 1898 to the 1940s, Pepsi’s logo closely resembled that of Coca-Cola’s swirly red script. Don’t get it wrong, Pepsi wasn’t attempting to copy Coke’s successful branding. In fact, this script was

1906 the go-to logo preference at that point of time.

1962

1940: In support of America’s war effort, Pepsi changed the colour of its bottle to red, white and blue. The logo also lost some of its curlicues. 1962: Yet another big change was made as the new design featured an image of a serrated bottle cap, which was in line with the “Pepsi Generation” campaign. During the year, Pepsi quickly recognised the emergence of post-war baby boomers and positioned Pepsi as the brand belonging to the new generation. 1973: In 1973, the more minimalist design (wavy stripes of red, white and blue) we’re familiar with today was implemented. 1991: Pepsi commemorated the evolution of its scripted Pepsi logo by featuring the word “Pepsi” with an italic capital typeface. 1998: At the company’s 100 years celebration in 1998,

1998 1973

2005

2015

Pepsi-Cola unveiled a new logo that symbolises the brand’s innovation and global recognition. 2005: A more refreshing-looking, three-dimensional design was implemented as the new face of Pepsi. Today: Today, the logo is a simple circle. The top half is red, the bottom half is blue and a wavy white line runs through the centre. The colours intentionally represent the patriotic palette of the American flag.

Fun fact!

Pepsi actually spent hundreds of millions on their current logo. The branding agency that was hired by Pepsi apparently presented a 27-page document elaborating on a myriad of connotations (from the earth’s magnetic field, feng shui, Pythagoras, geodynamics to the theory of relativity) their design represented.

The McDonald’s Brothers McDonald’s logo design is distinctive and instantly recognisable with its shining golden arches. However, as we look back at some of the early versions of the logo, it’s rather hard to believe that McDonalds’s iconic logo had once existed without its big yellow ‘M”.

1940: McDonald’s actually started off when brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their McDonald’s barbecue restaurant in San Bernardino, California. The original menu featured 40 barbecue items alongside its burgers. 1948: After the brothers realised most of their profits came from hamburgers, they closed their drive-in to establish a streamlined menu of just hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries, shakes, soft drinks and apple pie. The restaurant’s name was again changed, this time to simply McDonald’s. 1953: Within the following years, the pair had perfected the art of fast food with a process

66

| CAMPUS PLUS

they coined the “Speedee Service System”. Since barbecue was dropped from the menu to improve service time, the brothers designed their first mascot: a winking chef character, Speedee, to further communicate the message. 1960: The Golden Arches were introduced as the company’s new symbol. The logo referenced McDonalds’s iconic architecture of the era as designed by Stanley Meston. The design resembled an ‘M’ with a slanting line running through the arches to represent the roof of the store (higher at the front, lower at the back).

2000: The logo was introduced on McDonald’s commercials that aired from 2000 to 2003 with the slogan “We love to see you smile”. 2003: In September 2003, McDonald’s unveiled its most successful advertising campaign through the slogan “I’m lovin’ it” and removed the “McDonald’s” word mark from the logo. Today: Part of a “Forever Young” redesign in 2006, McDonald’s presented its most simplified logo of all time, a plain and iconic golden “M” that suffices as a symbol for the world-wide company to present day.

1962: McDonald’s second mascot, Archy McDonald was used on delivery trucks and TV commercials. 1968: The slanted line was now removed from the Golden Arches and an additional text of “McDonald’s” was placed at the bottom of the arches. The logo was also used in countries outside the United States until 1984. 1992: This logo first appeared on the McDonald’s commercials that aired from 1992 to 1997 with the slogan “What you want is what you get” and from 1995 to 1997 with the slogan “Have you had a break today?” 1997: With the McDonald’s Golden Arches illustrated in a speech bubble design, the logo served its purpose on McDonald’s commercials in the United States with the slogan “Did somebody say McDonald’s?”

Fun fact!

After all, the McDonald’s logo is not just a large alphabetical depiction of the company’s name. Apparently, the rounded “M” subconsciously represents our mother’s breasts! And the gentleman behind this idea is none other than Louis Cheskin, a psychologist and design consultant that was hired by McDonald’s. He claimed the golden arches have a Freudian effect that would make customers imagine a pair of nourishing breasts, which then made them hungry. Well, now you won’t look at the big “M” the same way again!

HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES

APRIL 2015

feature by andrew tan

Video games are everywhere in the modern world. From your computer to your mobile phone, we take a look back into history and see how this cultural phenomenon started, and how it evolved into the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. 1987: The first ‘Final Fantasy’ role playing video game is released by Square Enix. ‘The Legend of Zelda’ is also released in the same year. Both games become multi-million dollar franchises. 1947: Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann file US patent #2,455,992 for a “Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device”, describing one of the first computer games played on a CRT.

1989: ‘SimCity’ is released by Maxis. By December of 1990, the game has won 21 awards.

1972: Atari releases ‘Pong’, the first commercial video game on 29th November, 1972. When they test it in Andy Capp’s Tavern in Sunnyvale, California, it stopped working, because people played it so much it got jammed with coins.

1991: Sid Meier’s Civilization, more commonly called ‘Civilization’ or ‘Civ’, is released by MicroProse.

1999: ‘Counter-strike’ was first developed as a modification to ‘Half-Life’. The rights are bought by Valve Corporation and the game was released as a store-bought game in 2000. The game quickly grows in popularity and develops into a franchise of games. 2000: Electronic Arts releases ‘The Sims’. The game becomes one of the best-selling PC games in history, selling over 16 million copies worldwide. 2003: The Valve Corporation introduces Steam, the now staple digital distribution platform for PC. The first game in the world famous ‘Call of Duty’ franchise is released; the series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. 2004: Blizzard’s ‘World of Warcraft’ game, the most popular and successful MMORPG of all time, is released and becomes a worldwide phenomenon. At its peak in 2010, it had 12 million subscribers worldwide. 2006: ‘Crysis’ is released for the PC. It becomes one of the best reviewed games of all time and is one of the best-selling PC games ever.

1978: ‘Space Invaders’ is released as an arcade video game in Japan in June 1978 and later in North America in 1979. Its popularity grew quickly, with over 100,000 machines sold and installed in arcades across Japan by the end of 1978. The game caused a shortage of 100-yen coins in Japan. 1980: A missing slice of pizza inspires Toru Iwatani to create ‘Pac-Man’. It is considered one of the highest revenue generating video games of all time, bringing in over US$2.5 billion as of the 1990s. 1981: One of the gaming world’s most famous icons, ‘Mario’ is created. He was known as Jumpman in the game. Together with ‘Donkey Kong’, they become one of the bestselling arcade games of the early 1980s. 1984: The game ‘Tetris’ is created by Russian mathematician Alexey Pajitnov and is released in the USSR on 6th June, 1984. The game becomes a classic video game and is available to play on nearly every computer platform and gaming console.

In November of 1996, Computer Gaming World named ‘Civ’ as the best game of all time. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ is created by Sega to compete with the every growing popularity of Mario. 1992: ‘Wolfenstein 3D’ and ‘Dune II’ released. Both are considered genre defining games, popularising First Person Shooters and Real Time Strategy respectively. 1994: ‘Warcraft’ is released by Blizzard and is the start of a very successful franchise. It spawned multiple games and merchandise. 1997: A very good year for gaming. Multiple w o r l d w i d e blockbusters were released this year including ‘Diablo’, ‘Grand Theft Auto’, and ‘Age of Empires’. ‘Ultima Online’, one of the early successes of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is also released this year. 1998: ‘Starcraft’ is released by Blizzard. The game becomes a staple in e-sports and is an important step in the development of real-time strategy games, raising the bar for the gaming industry.

2009: ‘Minecraft’ is first released to the public. The addictive brick-building game from developer Markus Persson becomes a global hit and has been praised for the creative freedom it grants players in-game, as well as the ease of enabling emergent gameplay. 2011: ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ is released by Bethesda Softworks. During the first weeks of release, over 7 million copies of the game are shipped to retailers. It is also the fastest selling game on Valve Corporation’s Steam platform. 2013: ‘Dota 2’ is released after years of development and testing. It has since become a game played for free by millions worldwide.

As you can see, video games have come a long way from small experiments in the mid-20th century and has since become a multi-billion dollar industry. With on-going projects such as the virtual reality head-mounted display, Oculus Rift making great strides, the future looks bright for video games and its gamers. APRIL 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

SPOOK’S: A NEW DARKNESS

TRIGGER WARNING: SHORT FICTIONS AND DISTURBANCES

AUTHOR: JOSEPH DELANEY

AUTHOR: NEIL GAIMAN

Neil Gaiman - author of ‘Stardust’ and ‘The Graveyard Book’ among others - should need no introduction to the average bookworm. He now returns with an anthology of short stories, some of which are from his vast NEIL GAIMAN archives, and others that are freshly penned. Included among the new reads is a ‘Doctor Who’ story that was written for the 50th anniversary of the series in 2013, and ‘Black Dog’, which takes readers back to the world of ‘American Gods’, another notable piece of work by Gaiman. For fans of horror and ghost stories, science fiction and fairy tales, this is one book that you don’t want to miss.

MASTERMINDS AUTHOR: GORDON KORMAN If you like your stories actionpacked and full of twists and turns, ‘Masterminds’ deserves a place on your bedside table, but be prepared to forego sleep. Eli Frieden is the star of the plot, and he is a boy who GORDON KORMAN lives in a seemingly perfect town called Serenity in New Mexico. In a place where honesty and integrity are the most valued traits, imagine Eli’s surprise when he rides his bicycle to the edge of town and witnesses something so crazy and unexpected that it changes everything. With help from his friends, Eli starts making the connection between his crime-free home and some of the world’s greatest criminal masterminds.

Delaney, whose series ‘The Wardstone Chronicles’ just came to life onscreen as ‘Seventh Son’, is giving fans a chance to delve deeper into the world of Thomas Ward in this latest trilogy. The first of the ‘Starblade Chronicles’, ‘Spook’s: A New Darkness’ follows Thomas Ward as a full-fledged Spook - one who protects the world from evil, supernatural creatures. He now has an apprentice of his own named Jenny. Jenny soon gets a taste of life as a Spook when she and her mentor stumble upon a new darkness that might spell the end of the world.

Substance

and Style Philips A3-PRO

The middle brother of A1-PRO and A5-PRO, the Philips A3-PRO aims to provide a great listening experience without breaking the bank. Does it deliver? Read on to find out. Design/Features The Philips A3-PRO features a robust, glossy and professional look. The headband itself is made from steel and looks surprisingly good, and though rigid, provides a good amount of clamp force. When used for extended periods though, the clamp force can be slightly too much, especially if you’re wearing spectacles. The ear-cushions are made up of memory foam, though they are not quite as thick as the A5-PRO’s. As for the ear cups, they can pivot 90 degrees in opposite directions, allowing for one-ear monitoring. It’s also foldable, which makes the A3-PRO incredibly easy to carry, for wherever you go.

Audio Quality Having previously reviewed both the Philips A1-PRO and A5-PRO, I expected the sound to be just as good, if not better. I was not disappointed as the listening experience delivered by the A3PRO met my expectations and in some cases exceeding them. As this is a pair of DJ headphones, the bass once again packs a good punch. Tracks like ‘Wish You Were Here’

by Goldfish and Blink sound superb, even more so if you have access to a sound equaliser. Tracks with warmer tones, such as classical music sound good as well, as you are able to hear the bass instruments very well as usually they are buried under the other, more prominent instruments. Overall, the audio quality of the A3-PRO is nothing short of amazing.

Connectivity The A3-PRO comes with long coiled cable that can be stretched up to 1.8m. The cable is easily detachable and can be attached to either the left or the right audio port located on either ear cup. It also comes with a 6.3mm threaded adapter, and a protective carry pouch. As mentioned, the A3-PRO met all my expectations as the middle brother of the PRO series, though the clamp force can be a little too much for some, the audio quality is nothing short of great. At around RM1,300, it is a solid purchase for anyone looking for a powerful, all-rounded DJ headphones.

or some, driving can be scary, considering the increasing amount of road rage incidents. Fear not though, because there’s a way to discourage acts like these – by using a digital video recorder. This month, we have the Philips CVR300, which seems to be a pretty solid device. Find out more in this review.

Design/Features The first thing you’ll notice about the CVR300 is the fact that it looks very much like a smartphone. Long and sleek, it’s unobtrusive when installed properly. Apart from that, the controls are highly simple, consisting of only a Power button and joystick/select cluster. In terms of features, the CVR300 has a lens that can rotate 180 degrees, which makes it easy to adjust the angle of view. It also makes it easy to record anything that’s happening on the passenger, or rear side of the car. Apart from that, it records in Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, at 30 frames per second, or 1280 x 720 at 60 frames per second. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the CVR300 though, is that it makes use of a HDR CMOS sensor. What this means is that it’ll be able to record good details, regardless of lighting conditions. It’s also great that Philips decided to put a 2-inch TFT screen on this device, so you can quickly review recordings without having to connect it to a PC. The screen is good enough to quickly view simple things, but we still recommend plugging it into a PC to better see the details.

Video Quality We tested the CVR300 by fitting it into a car and recording videos in both low-light conditions and brightly-lit areas. After taking several videos, we have to say that we’re very happy

APRIL 2015

Eye In the Car Philips CVR 300 with the results. In low-light scenes, details are still very clear and plate numbers are very much visible. As for brightly-lit areas, the CVR300 takes care of lens flare very well, so you’re still able to get a good amount of detail in the recordings.

Connectivity/Recording There’s one microSD slot that supports up to 32GB Class 6 cards, one HDMI output, and a mini USB slot for you to charge this device in your car, or to connect it to your PC. The slots are all found at the top of this device, which is great if you’re planning to mount the CVR300 at the top of your windscreen. With the slots at the top, you can tape the cable to the sides of your windscreen so that there are no dangling wires. Simply put, the Philips CVR300 is a great option if you’re in the market for a digital video

recorder for your car. Its recordings are crisp and clear, with plenty of details. It’s also very easy to set up and use.

S

amsung’s range of smartphones is undoubtedly among the top choices when it comes to Android-based smartphones. The company is trying to further solidify this fact by releasing a brandnew smartphone called the Samsung GALAXY A5. Find out about it in this month’s review.

Design/Features The Samsung GALAXY A5 looks great. It is the first smartphone from Samsung to feature a fullmetal unibody, which feels really good in your hands. With dimensions of 139.3 x 69.7 x 6.7mm, the phone is comfortable to hold, without being too large, or too small. Weighing in at just 123 grams, the weight is barely noticeable. With a 5-inch display, the GALAXY A5 is great for viewing photos and watching videos. Colours are vibrant and images are highly crisp, thanks to its Super AMOLED technology. While it only offers a resolution of 720p, images are reasonably sharp, without eating up too much battery life. What sets the GALAXY A5 apart from the competition is the fact that it comes with extended features for taking selfies. For starters, you can take a selfie using the front-facing camera without touching anything; instead, you can use your voice or palm. There’s also the Wide Selfie feature, which stitches up to three images, for panoramic-like selfies. Perhaps the most exciting selfie-centric feature the GALAXY A5 has to offer is the ability to take animated GIFs. This phone is able to snap up to 20 photos continuously to create an animated GIF. At the rear is a 13MP camera that takes decent images and is more than capable of meeting your day-to-day photography needs. The LED flash is powerful, lighting up any lowlight scenes with ease. I found myself liking the camera a lot. I’m also happy to report that this smartphone supports 4G LTE networks, so you’re all set for speedy mobile Internet surfing with this phone. However, do note that you’ll need a Nano-SIM.

Performance Performance wise, its 1.2GHz quad-core processor offers good performance, with little to no lag. Even with multiple applications running, the phone runs smoothly, though there’s a minor hiccup in performance when gaming heavily. Battery life is suitably impressive as well. With light to medium usage (web browsing, messaging, and a couple of YouTube videos), the 76

phone lasts just over a typical day. With heavy usage however (four to five calls, email replying and some gaming), the phone lasted for about six to seven hours. Summing things up, I like how streamlined and clean the GALAXY A5 is. It is light, has good performance and reasonable battery life, and sports plenty of cool selfie-centric features. If you love taking selfies and want something that’s powerful, the GALAXY A5 comes recommended. It’s also priced competitively, at just above the RM1,000 mark.

If you’ve been following the automotive scene closely, you’d know that late in 2014, Ford Malaysia announced that in 2016, the sixth-generation Mustang would make its way here. Just recently, the company held an event here in Publika, where the five litre, V8 variant was showcased. This car is equipped with a five litre Ti-VCT V8 engine, which boasts 435 horsepower and 400 pounds of torque. To achieve these figures, a number of tweaks were done to the engine, including a “larger intake and exhaust valves, the use of new cylinder heads with revised high-flow ports and new intake and exhaust camshafts with increased lift.” Aesthetically, the car takes inspiration from the classic Mustang Fastback design, with many

new touches. This includes HID headlamps and tri-bar LED tail lamps, dual exhaust pipes and air extractor hood vents. Inside, there’s plenty of subtle design cues that serve to give you an exhilarating driving experience. Speaking of the inside of the car, there’s plenty to drool about. The first is the Track Apps feature, which integrates Electronic LineLock and launch control, as well as the ability to keep track of various car statistics while on a track. The Electronic Line-Lock system keeps the front brakes locked while the car is in gear, so that you can warm up the rear tyres. Surfing through

Your Travels Me

T

he first thought that springs to mind upon deciding on a travel destination is lodging, which usually results in looking up hotels or calling up friends and family who may live there. However, there’s an alternative that not many have considered before – couchsurfing. We managed to speak to Jasmine Christal-Lin Joseph, a 24-year-old who was able to couchsurf her way through most of Asia and Europe. Read on for the first part of this special two-part couchsurfing feature. Who I Am My name is Jasmine Christal-Lin Joseph, and I’m 24 this year. I was in PR for a while, before deciding to couchsurf. I’m currently working as a Sales Executive, and my interests include singing, cooking and of course, travelling. When it comes to travelling, I prefer places that are close to nature, or somewhere that I can go trekking or hiking.

80

| CAMPUS PLUS

Introduction to Couchsurfing I heard about couchsurfing when I was about to begin travelling. I wanted to travel on a budget, and we had things like food and accommodation to figure out. Then a friend of mine told me about couchsurfing, and I decided to check it out online. Back then, I was travelling with two other friends of mine, so we left the matter of handling it to one person to make things easier. That friend of ours set up an account on couchsurfing.com, and put up a picture of all three of us. Once you’ve signed up and found a host of your choice, you can choose to pay in order to verify yourself. If you don’t, that’s fine as well. Having more references in people who have hosted you in the past helps boost your chances of landing a new host. The more references you have, the more credibility you have as a couchsurfer. Similarly, whenever we look for hosts, we look for more credible ones, someone who has hosted many of the couchsurfers before. Most of the time, they get back to you pretty fast. If they’re

not in town and therefore unavailable for hosting, they’ll usually leave a note. There was this one time when we applied for a host in Amsterdam a week before making our way there, but received no replies. Fortunately, there’s a forum on couchsurfing.com called the Last Minute section where you can just leave a message notifying your location and you will be given a few suggestions for available hosts. Although it’s convenient, the hosts suggested may not be as credible. There aren’t any specific criteria for being a couchsurfer. We just put in some information about ourselves in the biodata section, and hosts can take a look at it. The same goes for the hosts themselves, so if we see someone who has the same likes as us, for instance travelling, we’ll go for that. Tips for a Better Couchsurfing Experience • Share More About Yourself Getting started is really easy. You just have to Google the website, and sign up. I would suggest being more detailed in the likes and dislikes section. If you want to couchsurf though, it’d be better not to write what you dislike. I learned this the hard way. You see, I’m afraid of cats and there was once a lady whose house we couchsurfed in who neglected to tell us she owned two cats who roam around freely. When I went there, I saw the cats at the window, freaked out, and started crying. We stayed there for four to five days, and the whole time we were there, everyone had to work around the cats and I. When I was at the house, I’d lock myself in the room most of the time. If I came out, they’d have to lock the cats away, and they’d only be let out when I was back in the room. Speaking of hosts, there is a possibility of being rejected by some of the hosts you apply for, so you definitely have to cast your net wide and try for more than one. Don’t apply at the last minute, and don’t apply too far in advance either as they might not know then if they’re able to take you in. Three to four days in advance is sufficient. • Pack with Purpose When I went on my first couchsurfing trip, I brought along a new backpack and took a lot of stuff. In the end, I wound up not using even half of them. So, my recommendation is: travel light and recycle your clothing. When you couchsurf, not all hosts are generous enough to let you use their washing machine or dryer, so you’ll have to hand-wash your clothing. If the weather is bad and not conducive for washing clothes,

you’ll even have to re-wear your clothing. I’d also highly recommend bringing along a torchlight or a flashlight. You could take a first aid kit with you too, just in case. I also carry a Swiss knife with me, and most of the time it doesn’t present a customs issue as we travel by land. If you do have to fly and need to carry it, you can just check it in with your luggage. Some hosts may not have a bed or a couch for you, just a space in their house somewhere, so always go prepared with a sleeping bag. I also have a small pillow from a flight I once took, so it’s portable enough that I get to carry it with me wherever I go. A small blanket is a good idea too. When I was in Europe, it was on the verge of winter so temperatures were freezing cold, and a small blanket really helped. For colder countries, I also have a heat pack. If you hitchhike, there will be times when it’s too late for you to get to your host’s house, so what do you do when there’s no place to sleep? That’s why we bring our own tent, so we can just set it up and stay overnight at wherever we decide to camp. As couchsurfing is free, you get to save a lot of money. During my trip around Asia, I only spent about RM4,500 in four months. Apart from couchsurfing, which is accommodation, you save on the cost of transportation too, through hitchhiking. In Asia, it’s actually a pretty good idea to hitchhike. Is Couchsurfing Safe? If case of an emergency, there are numbers known to the couchsurfing community that you can contact. Couchsurfers usually hold gatherings either weekly or monthly, and these gatherings are where you can get these contacts. These sessions also give you a chance to exchange contact details with other couchsurfers and hosts, plus everyone gets to know one another. In Amsterdam, there was even a head of couchsurfers, so you know there’s an administration of sorts in place. In The Next Issue... Look out for the second part of Jasmine’s story, where she’ll tell you more about where she has travelled, the people she has met, and some of the best (and worst!) experiences she has faced as a couchsurfer.

IT’S RAINING COLOURS

APRIL 2015

Dipped in Hues of Bright Colours and Love T

The Color Run in Malaysia during August 2014

he Color Run is an annual 5 km run that’s touted as the “Happiest 5k on the Planet”. As its name suggests, it’s a colourful event where participants are showered with coloured powder as they run through multiple checkpoints. While this colourful run is no stranger to us, not many of us are aware that in the Eastern part of India, a similar tradition has been practised for over hundreds of years now (historians even predicted that it had probably started several centuries before the birth of Christ!). Yes, we owe this viral sensation to the ancient celebration of Holi.

The Genesis of Holi Holi is a festival celebrated on the day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (February to early March). Holi started off as a special rite performed by married women for the happiness and well-being of their families whereby the full moon (Raka) was worshipped. Soon after, it turned into an agricultural festival that celebrates the arrival of spring. Today, Holi is a time when man and nature alike, throw off the gloom of winter and rejoice in the colours and liveliness of spring. It also signifies the victory of good over evil as Holi continues to commemorate various Hindu mythologies. 82

The coloured powder used during Holi is referred to as Gulal or Holi Powder

Significance of the Holi Festival Mythological Significance: From the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakashyap, there once lived an evil and powerful king, Hiranyakashyap who considered himself a god and demanded everyone to worship him. To his great ire, his son, Prahlad disagreed and refused to worship his father. Instead, he began to worship Lord Vishnu. In order to get rid of his son, the king called upon his demoness sister, Holika for help. The king asked Holika to sit on a blazing bonfire and to call for Prahlad to sit on her lap. Holika had a special garment that prevented her from being harmed by fire. However as the fire roared, the garment flew from Holika and covered Prahlad. Holika was burnt to death as a price for her sinister desire while Prahlad came out unharmed due to his extreme devotion to the lord; signifying the triumph of good over evil. The tradition of burning Holika comes mainly from this legend.

eve of holi

The Day of Holi: Also known as Dhuleti, a common greeting during this time is, “Happy Holi”. On this auspicious occasion, people take extreme delight in spraying coloured liquid and throwing coloured powder on each other. Many people consume bhang, an intoxicating drink made from cannabis leaves which tend to bring out the wilder side of people. Once intoxicated, people dance to the rhythm of dholak (two headed hand drum) and sing songs at the top of their lungs. Amidst all BHANG DRINK these activities, people also consume traditional Holi delicacies with great joy. After an eventful and fun-filled day, people become a little sober in the evening and greet friends and family by visiting them and exchanging sweets.

Appreciation of Holi Holi is essentially a time of the year that brings the society together and strengthens the secular fabric among people. The festival symbolises the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, and the end of winter. For many, it is also a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. There are other fun festivals similar to Holi which splash not just colours, but bizarre things like tomatoes, oranges and melons! Don’t believe us? Take a look!

Social Significance: Social barriers are broken as people from all walks of life regardless of age, gender, caste and wealth, gather together and celebrate the festival. In fact, it is believed that one can get away with almost any kind of behaviour on the day of Holi by saying “bura na mano holi hai”, which means, “don’t mind, it is Holi”.

Rituals of Holi Pre-Holi: People start gathering wood and combustible materials for the bonfire in parks, community centres, around temples or other open spaces. On top of the pyre is an effigy to signify Holika who tricked Prahlad into the fire.

This world-famous event is a giant tomato fight which takes place in the streets of the town of Buñol, near Valencia, in the east of Spain.

Eve of Holi: Typically held during or after sunset where the pyre is lit, the gesture signifies Holika Dahan; a ritual that symbolises the victory of good over evil as people sing and dance around the fire.

TOTALLY TOTE

A

re you looking to re-purpose last season’s T-shirts, which are probably now left unloved in your wardrobe? Take a look at our DIY project this month to find simple steps on how to turn an old T-shirt into an eco-friendly (and beautiful!) tote bag in just 15 minutes. This is a clever project that costs almost nothing to create; a sewing machine isn’t even needed (amazing, right?). With just an old T-shirt, some fast cutting and of course, a little bit of patience, you’ll be able to turn rags into...bags.

What you will need: • Heavy-weight cotton T-shirt • Sharp scissors • Measuring Tape • Washable marker (optional) • Beads with larger holes (try Daiso)

Let’s Get Started!

1 2 3 4

Choose an old T-shirt and lay it flat on a table. Use scissors to cut and remove the sleeves on both sides (roughly an inch past the seam will do). If you are particular about getting both sides to stay identical, you can fold the T-shirt in half and then cut both sleeves at once.

Position a medium-size bowl (you can basically replace it with any rounded object, we used a cake base) about halfway over the neck hole. Using a marker pen, trace along the edge of the bowl. Cut along the outline, making sure to go through the front and back sides of the shirt in order to create an opening for the bag that’s larger than what the neck hole allows. Next, it’s the fringe part of your bag. Turn your shirt inside out as we will be tracing a lot of dots on it. For the width between each fringe, we dotted half inch marks across the bottom of the shirt.

Similarly, by using the measurement tape, determine how deep you want the bag to be and trace a few dots or draw a vertical line across the bottom of the shirt (we used six inches). Keep in mind that depending on the fabric used, your tote is likely to stretch and become longer when it’s filled with stuff. 84 84

| CAMPUS PLUS | CAMPUS PLUS

5 6 7

Now that we have traced out the guidelines, grab your scissors and cut slits from the bottom of the shirt up to the line marking the bottom of your bag. You’ll want to cut both the front and back layers together because they need to match up for the next step.

This is going to look really complicated, but it’s not! We promise. Keep the slits lined up and starting with one end, give the first pair a couple of tucks and then start knotting the top to the bottom by tying a set of slits together. Do double the knots to create a secure base for your bag. Repeat that until you have completed the entire row. When you are done, grab a handful of these freshly tied-up fringes and give them a couple more tugs. Lift up your shirt, and you should get a similar result as seen in the picture on the far right. Notice the sturdy design on the base of your bag.

Turn your new T-shirt tote inside out again, and you’re ready to go!

8

Another Fun Variation… 1.

2.

3. 4.

If you are opting for a more boho and chic design, you can keep the fringes out instead of tucking ’em in. During step six, rather than solely tying down the knots, we attempted to decorate them with silver beads! Taking the first pair of slit, focus on the end by twisting them together while threading them through the bead hole. Pull the bead all the way to the top and tie a double knot. For the beading part, we alternate between a silver bead and then a no bead pattern and repeat it until we are done with the entire row. Now carry your goodies in your own stylish tote!

Tips • Pick a T-shirt with a thicker fabric as it will create a sturdier bag. • For tying the knots, pick up the two ends and tie the left over right, and then the right over left. • Apply minimal force while stretching out the fringes.

Did you know? Plastic shopping bags are typically used for less than 30 minutes and only 1% of them are recycled? It’s a scary statistic but we can all do small things to help our earth! This is a great alternative from buying “green” shopping bags and it is much more fashionable and durable. There you go, appearance and practicality in a tote.

THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SALT AND coffee?

A dash of Salt

What looks like a simple café reveals itself to be a very unique food experience.

S

alt ’n Koffie Gallery was started by Andrea and Godfrey, both avid divers. It’s no mystery then, that they chose to incorporate their love for the sea, with another thing they loved – food. A place that’s warm and cosy, this café is a great place to spend a weekend afternoon, or any other afternoon for that matter. We started off with a serving of ‘Sangkaya Coconut Ice Cream’, a dessert served in half a coconut shell that is topped with nuts and a dash of coconut sprinkles. The taste was rich and flavourful, with a smooth texture, and it’s definitely not something you can find every day. Priced at RM9 per two scoops, it is most definitely worth a try. If you’d rather have something else other than ice cream for dessert, there’s the ‘Salted Caramel Tiramisu Jar’, which is essentially a jar that’s filled with tiramisu, a delight at RM12. If you’re a chocolate lover though, you’ll want to try the Seriously Chocolate Cake, at RM16 per slice. As its name suggests, it’s a cake that’s made entirely out of chocolate, and it’s topped with a generous scoop of ice cream. For the more adventurous, there’s the Salt ’n Koffie Cake (RM14 per slice), which successfully blends sweet and salty for a truly tantalising (and unique!) dessert. Of course, it wouldn’t be a café without any coffee, right? The establishment serves a variety of delicious

caffeinated beverages, from the humble Mocha, at RM11, to their more creative concoctions. Their signature ‘Salty Koffie’, priced at RM13, is exactly that, salty-tasting coffee! I honestly did not know what to expect from this, but once I tried it, I found that I rather liked it. Apart from that, there’s the ‘Accidental Affogato’, which is a straight shot of concentrated espresso with a topping of coconut ice cream. This is priced at RM12. If you would prefer something a bit more savoury, you can try their toasties, which are toasted bread packed with a variety of delicious grilled items. It comes in three delectable choices - cheese, tuna and beef, all priced between RM12 to RM15. A special mention needs to go to the tea, which was especially delightful. The tea served here is from Chateau Rouge, a company that’s relatively unknown here in Malaysia. Highly fragrant, one might expect the taste to be overwhelming, but the honest truth is that the tea is highly subtle. A bag of tea goes for RM9. Salt ’n Koffie is open every day of the week, except on Wednesdays. Its operating hours are between 10 am to 10 pm from Mondays to Thursdays and 10 am to 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Busy periods include after lunch and after dinner; the shop is frequented by lots of regulars, so make sure to be there early for seats.

Stories From the Movies

When it comes to movies, it’s often art imitating life. However, there are times when life should imitate art as well. We ask you this month, what are the lessons that you’ve learned from your favourite movies.

For me, the most important thing that I have learned from a movie is the love one has for a family member. The movie that brought that up for me the most was ‘Frozen’.

From the movie ‘Kiasu’, a Singaporean comedy. In that movie, I learned that a parent should accept a child’s dream, and give them the opportunity to pursue what they really want.

I learned to treasure your loved ones. ‘The Lion King’ taught me that even though you might be angry at someone, there is no point in staying that way. You never know how much time they might have left.

In ‘Rocky Balboa’ there was a scene where Rocky said, “It’s not about how many times you fall, it’s about how many times you fall and get back up.” I try to incorporate that in my life.

Pizza Hut Unleashes New Line of Nail Polish

Would you be interested to try a Voracious Veggie or Poppin Pepperoni? No, we’re not referring to pizza per se. Although to be fair, pizza is a gift of the gods and should be incorporated into every aspect of our lives, including our beauty routine. In line with a new Valentine’s Day promotion, Pizza Hut Australia unveiled a line of signature nail polish colours that despite their exquisite names, isn’t edible. On top of a Mint Green Veggie and Bright Pink Pepperoni, the line consists of six other colours, including a glitter-filled red called “Sparkling Supreme”, a neon yellow called “Say Cheese” and a neutral shade of nude called “Dough You Need Me”. Although we admit it’s rather difficult for the taste of pizza to be accurately captured by cosmetics, kudos to Pizza Hut for coming up with the cheesy names.

The Twins That Everyone Can Tell Apart! Beauty comes in many shapes and sizes, and Lucy and Maria Alymer are the perfect illustration of this. These ladies, who are of two distinctive shades are in fact, twin sisters. Born in 1997 to a white father and half-Jamaican mother, this pair of fraternal twins was quickly identified as a natural miracle. While Lucy was born with white skin, red hair and blue eyes, Maria was surprisingly born with brown skin and brown eyes. With such opposing looks, it’s hard to believe the striking pair are twin sisters. Growing up, Lucy admitted that no one ever believed that they are twins. Even when they dress alike, they barely look like sisters, let alone twins. She added that friends have even asked them to show their birth certificates to prove it!

Believe it or not, these girls are twins!

fact: Fraternal twins inherit different genes from their respective eggs. In the case of the Alymer twins, their mother Donna, carries genes for black and white skin. Maria inherited one code, while her twin sister Lucy, inherited another. Instances like these are so rare that the estimation of occurrence is one in a million.

The twins when they were younger

fact: Unfortunately, this set of nail polish isn’t for sale. It was created as a reward for 30 lucky contest winners who wrote the most romantic poems about pizza for Valentine’s Day. Previously, the restaurant chain had also tried something similar. In 2012, Pizza Hut created a bizarre perfume that smelt like... freshly baked pizza. Pizza Hut also released a perfume that smells like a fresh box of pizza being opened.

“Wolf Child”: World’s Hairiest Girl Supatra Sasuphan from Thailand has expressed her delight at being named the “World’s Hairiest Girl”. Although she has been teased her entire life by other children calling her “monkey face” and “wolf girl”, the now 15-yearold girl admitted a Guinness World Record recognition that was given to her in 2011 has since helped her become extremely popular. “I’m very happy to be in the Guinness World Records! A lot of people have to do a lot to get in. All I did was answer a few questions and then they gave it to me”. While most sufferers have been shunned in the past, we are happy that her community has gradually embraced her.

fact: Supatra Sasuphan is one of only 50 people ever to have Hypertrichosis (or Ambras syndrome) since the Middle Ages. It is a syndrome that causes thick hair to grow all over her face. Even laser treatment has failed to stop the hair growth. JAN 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

zombie slaying action

APRIL 2015

rinse and repeat dying light

I

t’s a proven formula: everything starts with a viral outbreak in some rural town and now a large percentage of its population are flesheating zombies. Enter a hero who holds the fate of the remaining survivors in his hands, and it’s up to him to save the day. While it’s fun to mow down zombie after zombie, the formula has become stale. In Dying Light, the formula remains the same. You play as Kyle Crane, an undercover operative sent to infiltrate the quarantined zone in the fictional city of Harran, with a mission to find a person named Kadir “Rais” Suleiman. Between you and your target, is the usual horde of the undead and the occasional gun toting human. There is nothing particularly new in terms of gameplay in Dying Light, though it tries to assimilate mechanics of other games. The movement system is highly reminiscent of Mirror’s Edge, with heavy emphasis on parkour, and a combat system directly taken from Techland’s previous game, Dead Island. Thankfully, Dying Light does have something new to add to the equation – a dynamic day and night cycle. During the day, zombies are slow and can be easily defeated. This is when

you ought to scavenge for supplies, set up traps, rescue survivors and get much needed supplies from airdrops. It’s a different story at night though. The zombies become more aggressive, are much stronger, and have the ability to sprint as well as climb walls. To survive, you’ll have an arsenal of weapons at your disposal. A flame thrower on a wrench? Sure. An electrified machete? Count me in. The only problem is, you’ll have to find blueprints and craft these weapons using components you’ve found during your escapades in the day. As you mow down zombie after zombie, or sprint from rooftop to rooftop, you’ll also gain skill points that can be spent to improve your character’s agility and combat ability, among other things. The story of the game is threadbare without much surprises and holds little replay value. Needless to say, I did not enjoy it. There is an online co-op mode where you can play with other players, making surviving the night portions of the game easier. The various side quests and activities are also somewhat entertaining, and I am sure you’ll find one or two side quests particularly interesting, though they do get repetitive after some time.

Having played Dying Light, I’d have to say that the day and night mechanics are rather interesting, and the blending of parkour elements make the game fun, but overall, this game just isn’t able to distinguish itself from the horde of zombie games out there. If you enjoy the zombie theme, however, you’ll likely want to get this game.

pros: Good combat and movement mechanics Satisfying upgrade (equipment & character) system Differing gameplay styles with day and night cycles i disliked: mediocre storyline overdone theme

A six-day affair, the roadshow was conducted at six different locations, from UTAR Sungai Long to Nilai University. The crowd had a blast with a series of amusing games such as ‘Ping Pong Toss’ and ‘Ring Toss’, where winners were given the opportunity to try their luck at winning Chu Lip merchandise such as mugs, pens, bags, lip balms and even candy! There was also the funky Chu Lip instant photo booth where everyone had the opportunity to take fun selfies! Despite the long queues, the crowd at the various campuses were eager to have their photos captured and printed out in photo strips, which were also given out for free. The highlight of the road shows was none other than the cute dome-shaped Chu Lip lip balms that were generously sold at a discounted price of RM15 instead of its original price tag of RM25.90. Freebies aside, students who purchased a Chu Lip lip balm also stood a chance to bag a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 (out of five available units), by simply snapping a photo of Chu Lip with a fabulous background and uploading it to facebook.com/MYCHULIP. If you missed out on the amazing goodies, you can still get your fun lip balm at all leading pharmacies and major supermarket outlets. Chu Lip comes in four striking colours, with each one representing a unique flavour. Purple for a floral shower; Green for a fruity blend of orange, lime and mango; Red for a combination of apple, ginger and tea rose; and lastly, Pink for a mix of raspberry and peach.

We know it’s impossible to compare real life to an anime, but it sure as hell would be fun if we could experience just a little of what the characters in anime do. This month, we would like to introduce you to some school life/slice of life anime that are returning for a second season! Do make sure you watch the first season before you start on any of these. cliffhanger. What awaits Tosaka Rin and Emiya Shirou and their heroic servants? What are the plans of the other masters? The girl then passed him a pendant so that he’d remember her.
