HIGHLIGHTS

Since our founding in 1964, our donors and funders have allowed Caminar to offer optimal, personalized care for people with serious behavioral health conditions. Our clients are among the most vulnerable people in our community, at greatest risk of slipping through the cracks and in the most need of finding wellness. It’s thanks to you that we helped more than 20,000 people last year overcome life challenges and move toward resilience, wellness, and independence.

The complexity of needs influencing the health and well-being of local youth and adults has been increasing over the last several years. We find people often are overwhelmed by overlapping and interrelated challenges, whether it’s serious mental illness and maintaining safe, affordable housing, or the co-occurring symptoms of mental health and substance use disorders, or trying to balance mental health recovery and the demands of the workplace. With your support, we have responded by increasing the breadth and depth of our behavioral health and supportive services.

Over the last two years, we welcomed three long-standing and highly regarded organizations to our Caminar family.

In 2017, Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley joined Caminar, bringing expertise in substance use treatment, family violence prevention, school-based counseling programs, and adolescent mental health services.

In spring 2018, we welcomed Healthy Partnerships, adding adolescent and adult substance use treatment and additional mental health programs to our continuum of care in Solano County.

Then in summer 2018, the addition of Project Ninety expanded our substance use treatment capacity in San Mateo County.

We are positioned to leverage our full complement of effective, solution-focused services to move the needle on pressing needs affecting the health of individuals, families, and communities. Pressing, complex needs such as mental wellness, addiction recovery, homelessness, and family violence prevention.

Inside this report, we highlight through stories the many dimensions of wellness, from mental health to housing stability, community connections to employment.

We share them with you with gratitude.

A Year of Expansion Caminar’s revenue in FY 2018 was $6.9 million greater than in FY 2017. This expansion is the result of growth in our programs and our recent mergers (as described on page 3).

Strengthening the Path to Wellness How We Build Wellness To offer optimal care for people with complex needs, we provide a comprehensive continuum of services that meets individuals and families where they are with the support they need to move toward greater resilience, wellness, and independence.

What is Wellness?

Because mental health and physical health are linked, problems in one area can impact the other. Wellness is not the absence of illness or stress. You can still strive for wellness even if you are experiencing these challenges in your life.

Our prevention programs seek to prevent the development of behavioral health conditions by building protective assets and addressing risk factors. Our targeted programming for youth and families includes on-campus counseling and family support services and child abuse prevention services.

When a youth or adult needs behavioral health support, our multilingual, highly trained clinicians provide therapy and treatment support tailored to the needs and goals of each client. As often as possible, we engage the client’s family members, too.

Dokie Riahi, LMFT, School-Based Clinical Counselor, FCS division, accompanied by her service dog Boston, catches up with Molly.

Wellness is Support Growing up, Molly had little stability in her young life. Fortunately, she could count on her teachers. It was through the intervention of a teacher, who noticed how Molly was struggling, that she found her way to our on-campus counseling services.

Molly was in the 8th grade when she started therapy and showed signs of severe depression. During sessions, Molly revealed to her therapist the extent of the emotional trauma in her life. Her parents both struggled with substance use. They held themselves together enough that Molly had a home in San Jose and food, yet they were unable to provide crucial nurturing and guidance for their only child.

Our therapist provided Molly with a safe place to work through her trauma, develop tools to manage her depression, learn and practice social skills, and build her resilience to cope with her ongoing life challenges.

When Molly transitioned into high school, our junior high therapist ensured that she connected with our therapist at her high school, Dokie Riahi, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). This proved essential. Molly’s mother would pass away during her freshman year. Dokie was there for her.

Today, Molly is in her senior year of high school. She works part-time and just received her driver’s license. She’s convinced that her father won’t live to see her graduate. In therapy, Molly has a safe place to talk through and face her fears, prepare for the future, and learn tools to cope effectively with the effects of stress and trauma.

Thanks to the resilience Molly has built through consistent therapy, she has maintained her mental wellness and avoided decompensating, despite the stress with which she lives. She hasn’t followed in her parents’ footsteps of addiction. She’s stayed in school and secured employment. And, most critically, she’s held onto hope for her future.

“I can’t believe that there was a time that I couldn’t motivate myself even to get out of bed or take a shower,” says Molly.

Thanks to the consistent, high quality mental health care our donors and funders make possible, Molly has had support throughout the critical years of her adolescence. And that, paired with Molly’s spirit and dedication, has made all the difference.

Wellness is Recovery When Ben was 18, alcohol took over his life.

Starting with drinking at parties and when hanging out with friends, soon alcohol was the answer to every question. Feeling stressed? Wanting to relax?

Hanging out? Drink, drink, drink. Eventually, he found he couldn’t stop.

Ben reached out for help when he was 25. For the next seven years, he tried rehab 10 times and was in and out of the emergency room. At age 32, he hit rock bottom. He accepted that he had no control over drinking or his life.

Wellness is Mental Health Sam came to Caminar with depression that was so debilitating, he was unable to get out of bed many mornings.

He’d missed so much work he was on the brink of losing his job.

While at our Hawthorne House residential home, he received support and time to recover from his mental illness and build essential skills for long-term management of his condition.

Ben thought he was a lost cause. When introduced to our Healthy Partnerships division’s treatment programs, Ben assumed it would be like other rehabs he tried. But without other options, the nine-month program was worth a shot.

As he began the program, Ben says, “I wasn’t into it because I was so broken.” Yet he knew he was in a life-or-death situation and he kept showing up.

With the guidance of his counselors, Ben gained insights into and worked through crucial issues that were behind his drinking.

Sober since October 25, 2017, Ben knows recovery is a lifelong process, with no shortcuts. Each day, he uses what he learned at Healthy Partnerships to stay on the path of wellness.

When he was ready, he returned to his life, equipped to manage his depression and move forward in wellness.

Today, Sam is thriving. He went from being a near-shut-in to a lead carpenter with a flourishing business. He credits Caminar with saving his life.

And, having benefited from the generosity, compassion, and support of others on his own journey to wellness, he feels a strong sense of community and gratitude. He pays it forward by volunteering his time and skills to help those in need. Last year, he helped to install new windows as part of the rebuilding effort following the wildfires in Sonoma and Napa counties.

Thanks to the life-changing support Sam received when he needed it most, Sam is here today, relishing each day the precious gift of mental wellness.

Healthy Partnerships became part of the Caminar family in May 2018, expanding our continuum of mental health and addiction recovery services in Solano County.

Wellness is Housing Growing up in government housing, Eddrena learned at a young age to continue moving forward despite adversity. That early lesson has proven invaluable as Eddrena has navigated her life.

A single mom to a daughter who experienced childhood trauma and ongoing depression, Eddrena has also survived a debilitating work injury, unstable housing, physical health concerns, and her own mental health issues.

In one of the most challenging times in her life, Eddrena and her daughter were evicted from their home. Despite Eddrena’s persistent requests for help, they struggled for the next 20 years in housing where they never felt at ease or at home.

When Eddrena’s daughter aged into the adult mental health system, they were connected with Caminar.

Discovering how their housing was affecting Eddrena’s and her daughter’s overall health and wellness, Caminar acted quickly to find a solution.

The Supported Housing Program found a spacious, sunny, and tranquil house for Eddrena and her daughter.

At last, they had a safe place to call home, heal from past trauma, and move forward in health and wellness.

Now, Eddrena advocates on housing issues, seeking to increase awareness about the intrinsic link between a healthy home and wellness.

Wellness is Employment Bela came to our Jobs Plus supported employment program with a goal: To overcome her past trauma and make a better future for herself.

Bela was living in a community house for women who had escaped sexual exploitation, prostitution, and sex trafficking, and taking steps to build a new life.

When Bela met with Jobs Plus Job Developer Tina Zhong, she explained that her plan was to go into business for herself as a hair stylist. She’d completed her training and needed help moving forward with establishing herself in business. Tina and Bela teamed together to search for the perfect place to start a business. They brainstormed ways to promote Bela’s business and build her clientele.

Soon, they found the ideal location.

Bela is all smiles when you see her working in Osbelia’s Hair Salon, a bright and beautiful salon in San Francisco’s Outer Mission District, where she rents a stylist’s station and delights in bringing joy to her clients.

individuals received residential or outpatient As the older sister, Suzan Getchell-Wallace always looked after her brother. But when her brother’s mental health symptoms began to emerge, the role took on new weight.

For years, her brother survived with severe mental illness, on inconsistent medication, and in highly unsafe, isolated, and unstable housing. Through the many ups and downs of his journey, Suzan stood by him and advocated for him as best she could. Perseverance and resilience, both for Suzan and her brother, eventually prevailed.

When her brother was connected with Caminar, it was like a miracle to Suzan. Our continuum of care embraced him, engaged him, retaught him daily living skills, and placed him in safe, stable housing.

“Caminar gave my brother a life worth living again,” Suzan says. “I received the priceless gift of peace of mind. At last, he was safe.”

Wellness is Knowledge 15th Annual Circle of Support Luncheon In addition to bringing together people with a shared commitment to the health and well-being of our community and raising essential funds for our program services, the goal of the Circle of Support Luncheon is to reduce stigma around behavioral health topics through education and conversation. Our 2018 event highlighted the importance of building empathy and resilience in children and youth and the effects of traumatic experiences on children’s development.

Wellness is Celebration 8th Annual In Concert with Caminar Held at SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco, the October 2018 gala celebrated the therapeutic power of the expressive arts and highlighted clients’ journeys toward resilience, wellness, and independence. 7th Annual Cammie Awards In recognition of Mental Health Month, our Solano Region hosts an annual awards luncheon for clients and their family members. We are inspired each year by the progress of individuals we are privileged to serve, who are blooming in recovery.

five months of safe, secure housing for an individual on the path to wellness and independence.

Wellness is Community The devastating Camp Fire in Butte County in fall 2018 made us feel just how precious a community of support truly is.

Caminar has been serving Butte County’s communities since the mid-1970s.

Today, 29 staff members serve more than 250 local residents annually.

While the fires raged, our staff worked to ensure all clients were safe and to help them access shelter and support. At the same time, our staff members and their friends and family members were coping with the uncertainty themselves.

Calleene Egan, Caminar Regional Director of Social Enterprises, and Caroline Raymundo, San Mateo Region Executive Coordinator, pack a car with donated items for our Butte community.

We are filled with gratitude for everyone who supported Butte County through the fire, those who are helping through the long recovery, and everyone in the greater Caminar community who offered assistance. We also recognize our Butte County team members for their outstanding service to clients.
