Dear Friends, Thank you for your interest in and support of Caminar. We are happy to share our Fiscal Year 2019 Annual Report with you, which details the progress we have made to improve the health of our community.

With your generous support, we are providing life-saving mental health and substance treatment to thousands of people.

Through our partnerships with government payors, individual donors, foundations, and corporations, last year we were able to reach over 20,000 individuals across five counties in Northern California. For thousands of our neighbors, Caminar brought compassionate care, based in science, to address behavioral health needs. These needs could have prevented our neighbors from living the full potential of what their lives hold. But because of your support, thousands of people were able to engage with meaningful employment, secure and maintain housing, re-engage with their families, participate more effectively in their education, and live freer of addiction and mental health symptoms. Thank you!

This past year was one of transitions. We spent much of 2019 integrating acquisitions that were made over the last couple of years. The acquisitions were made to create a behavioral health care provider whose scale and penetration could move the needle on improving the health of our communities. The cost of the integrations, including new programs, expanding our service footprint, creating effective back-office support, implementing electronic health records organization-wide, and revitalizing our care models, resulted in a deficit that you will see on page 4. I am pleased to report that we have already turned around financially-weak programs and put them on a path to fiscal health for the budget year 2020.

We also spent the last quarter kicking off our strategic planning process, which you will be hearing more about in the coming year. The primary focus of our strategic plan is to become a more technicallysophisticated provider of high-quality clinical care. That sophistication will lead to care and treatment strategies that can transform the lives of our clients whose complex needs may never have been adequately assessed in other settings. Instead of going off in new directions, we want to improve what we are already doing.

By focusing more deeply on what we do best—serving clients with moderate to severe mental health and/or substance use issues—we can make a profound difference in our client’s lives. Like in other areas of human endeavors, a continuous process of doing, learning, and refining leads to more sophisticated capacity to see and treat those previously under- or undiagnosed.

We will also address the housing, food security, and income security needs of clients by building deeper collaborations with other providers of those services. Systematically addressing the social determinants of health will make for better behavioral health outcomes. Finally, we are building our capacity to measure and communicate more sophisticated health outcomes. We are grateful for all the ways you partner with us to build healthier communities. Caminar’s budget for the fiscal year 2018-2019 had a planned deficit as a function of the acquisition of new programs to expand the service footprint of the organization and grow the assets of the organization through real estate acquisitions. As a part of the acquisitions, property assets totaling nearly $11 million were added in the previous year to the balance sheet from one acquisition. Budget year 20182019 was a year of managing growth of 14% through new programs. Performance on the operating budget was most strongly impacted by underutilization of a variety of service lines due to inefficiencies in county patient referral systems, underperformance of social venture programs, and a onetime write-off of reconciled insurance claims from 2012 in one region. The organization has a very robust balance sheet with over $27 million in land and buildings. The operating budget for 2019-2020 projects a $168,000 surplus.

As a child, Natalie always felt different. She recalls “everyone said I was too sensitive, and I cried a lot.” As Natalie matured, her feelings of sadness continued. At the age of 19, while experiencing tremendous physical and emotional stress, Natalie found herself with suicidal ideations.

She was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and diagnosed with major depressive disorder.

Throughout her life, Natalie has dealt with emotions unimaginable to most. “I was suicidal at times, in and out of hospitals. It was a dark, dark world,” she remembers.

Upon discharge from the hospital, Natalie was connected to Caminar’s case management program. A decade later and still part of the Caminar family, Natalie is flourishing and has gained valuable skills to manage her mental health condition. Notably, Natalie loves to write, through which she mitigates her internal unrest and expresses feelings of all kinds. Natalie credits Caminar with sharing resources to improve her health and well-being and giving her the courage to live independently.

Natalie’s message to anyone feeling sad, alone, or hopeless is that “lots of people haven’t seen the light at the end of the tunnel, but there’s always a light.” With thanks to our donors and funders, we are honored to be part of Natalie’s light.

Susan’s Story

Weathering the storm and finding balance Before Caminar, Susan describes feeling like “a really strong storm was brewing inside me.” That storm led to countless hospitalizations, seclusions, and restraints. Scared, confused, and helpless to help herself, Susan didn’t know where to turn.

The pivotal moment in Susan’s journey came when she enrolled in Caminar’s Supported Education dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) class, where she learned new and constructive coping strategies for her mental health. Soon, she recognized her thinking changing for the better. As Susan describes it, “my self-esteem and self-worth were improving tremendously. The world was no longer a threat to me and I realized everyone deals with something in their life. We all have challenges.”

With Caminar’s help, Susan regained control of her life and quelled the storm that once brewed inside of her. And, through our Jobs Plus program, she found gainful employment and recently celebrated seven years with the same employer. Particularly remarkable to Susan is how she began to approach others once she improved her outlook. Previously, Susan would avoid eye contact with others, hoping to avert any connection. Now, Susan looks everyone directly in the eye and smiles, often receiving a warm smile in return. This seemingly simple act speaks volumes to the growth and healing Susan has achieved.

Her case manager shares, “I know how hard things have been for Susan, and the obstacles she has faced. Through it all, and while balancing her mental health with employment and parenting a child with disabilities, she has shown inspiring tenacity and motivation to strive for continuous improvement.

Jacob’s Story Working together to feel safe again in the world Two years ago, 9-year-old Jacob was overcome with fear and anxiety over moving from his house, and possibly away from his friends and school.

He began to struggle just to leave his home in the mornings. His mom, a single mom struggling to make ends meet, was desperate for help.

Connected with our Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley division, Jacob and his mom found a trusted and compassionate therapist who helped them to cope with their move and manage the anxiety that was preventing Jacob from thriving. Jacob worked with his therapist on developing coping strategies, including positive self-talk, affirmations, and sand tray therapy, which were designed to decrease his anxiety and increase his confidence. Together with his therapist, his mom, and his beloved dog, Jacob quickly gained skills to alleviate his fears and begin to feel safe again in the world.

Today, Jacob is a happy and healthy 11-year-old who loves his new home and was relieved to remain at his same school. His mom is elated, reflecting that “Jacob’s progress has been quite remarkable,” and the confidence and support she also received from Jacob’s therapist has been incredibly helpful for her.

Jacob’s therapist shares that “this has truly been a team effort; we’ve all worked together, and everyone has been receptive and deeply committed to Jacob’s health and well-being. I’m really happy to see how well he’s doing today.”

16th Annual Circle of Support Luncheon Our annual Circle of Support Luncheon brings together people with a shared commitment to the health and well-being of our community, raises essential funds for our program services, and aims to reduce stigma around behavioral health topics through education and conversation. A sold-out audience joined us for our 2019 event. Together, we explored a family’s journey with addiction and heard from experts in the field and from the front lines.

Once again, we celebrated music, community, and wellness during our annual gala at the spectacular SFJAZZ Center. Emcee Dave Clark of KTVU-TV spoke to the importance of addressing mental health, substance use, and related challenges. Christie’s auctioneer Andrew Lick helped us to raise critical funds to deliver mental health care and support for Bay Area youth and adults. And, the therapeutic power of the expressive arts was apparent as we were enchanted by the sheer talent, authenticity, and soulfulness of our headliner Sheléa.

In Memory Barbara Ellis Jones

This year we were greatly saddened by the passing of our board member and friend Barbara E. Jones.

Barbara became involved with Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley (FCS) as a donor in 2001, and in 2012, Barbara was elected to FCS’s Board of Directors. When FCS merged with Caminar, Barbara transitioned to Caminar’s Board of Directors. Barbara cared deeply about ensuring people who were underserved had access to quality behavioral health care, educational opportunities, and help to heal from gender-based violence. She gave of her time and resources to advance causes, meet needs, and create change. Barbara is greatly missed. Her legacy lives on through the generosity of her friends and family, who contributed to Caminar in her memory.
