Cambridge Football Club - The Red Review 30/04/2022

The History of Cambridge Football Club Cambridge FC was established in 1948, based in the heart of the town. In 1967, Cambridge moved from the city to our new home on Vogel Street known as John Kerkhof Park - named after one of our great former club presidents. In 1974 Cambridge competed for the first time in the Northern League and played in the competition in various tiers of the league till the present day with only a few years playing in WaiBOP Premiership. In 2013 Cambridge was appointed as the home ground for WaiBOP United in the National League. In 2015, CFC hosted its first international match between Fiji and Hungary, as the teams preparation for the Under 20 FIFA World Cup. Cambridge has had its share of professional and internationally capped players coming through the ranks of the club. Notably players like Chris Wood, Che Bunce, Katie Duncan and Andrea Rogers have all worn the red and white stripes. In recent years Cambridge has had 4 players represent New Zealand at age group world cups as well as a handful of players playing for the national futsal team as well.

Coaches Corner - The First of Many! On behalf of Cambridge Football Club we would like to welcome West Auckland to John Kerkhof park for todays game. We would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors, volunteers and committee members - we wouldn’t be where we are today without all the work done behind the scenes. After coming off the back of a loss we headed to Claudelands last weekend with the mindset to turn things around. As all derby games are, this was a scrappy game conceding in the early minutes but equalising just 7 minutes after. heading into the break 1-1. After half time, Claudelands found the back of the net and held on to win 2-1. We take away many improvements from our first game and we keep moving forward in search of our first win. This is only the beginning of the season & we’ve been hit with two strong sides right off the bat while battling covid within our team early on. This hasn’t deterred our boys from pushing on and we keep our heads high, ready for another week. Moving forward to this weekends game in hope of getting our first points on the board for the 2022 season the boys have been working very hard we have had two big sessions working on shape, structure and intensity. welcoming back a few key players after being away for last weekends game we are heading into this weekends game positive, we know that west auckland will be a strong well structured team and expect a very tough game. Once again I would like to say a big thank you to everyone behind that scenes who make these match days happen. Although we have not gotten of to the start we had hoped for we as coaching staff have full belief in the squad and with help from our fantastic fan base at the club we look forward to putting on a good game For everyone watching.

The Captains Thoughts... Good afternoon everyone and welcome to John Kerkhof Park for our second home game of the season so far. Firstly, a warm welcome to our newly promoted visitors West Auckland. We look forward to the challenge of todays game. It has been a tough start to the season for the Reds, and last weekend’s derby loss was hard to take. The boys deserved more from what was a physical and scrappy encounter against Claudelands at Galloway Park. However, we are determined to turn things around and get back on track. This week we have worked hard at training and there is a positive vibe around the 1st and reserve squads, with lots of young talent pushing through and making their mark. The atmosphere around the club has been fantastic and it is good to see the support shown throughout. Today we owe the supporters a good performance and 3 points. I am looking forward to todays match and I hope to see everyone in full voice and enjoying their Saturday afternoon. Thank you for your support. #UP THE REDS!!

Patrick Woodlock

Captain of the NRFL Mens Division 2 Reds.

Our Women - Waikato Division 1 The Cambridge Women's Squad have had an awesome start to their season! We have kick started the season with two teams which is an awesome development for the squad! We have also welcomed on Nigel Mackintosh as division 1 coach, following myself as the manager and for the development side we have welcomed Andrew Taylor as the coach and Selena Oliver as their manager. We are all going to be working together to help both teams and create an awesome atmosphere to play in! Both teams have had a number of preseasons against multiple fantastic clubs which has helped the girls get back into football and helped us learn more & grow as both a team & individuals. Cambridge ran an 11 a side preseason tournament to everyone into the football spirit and starting building our team relationship. Our Division 1 girls ended up winning the tournament which was an awesome way to start the season and gave our girls the encouragement for the season ahead. Our Development squad also attended many tournaments throughout preseason and won them all which set a great start to their season as well and was an added bonus! Our main goals this year is to ensure our players play in a positive and fun learning environment where players can improve and grow on their skills. We have an amazing group of footballers this season and we cannot wait to share our journey with you all! Next Home Game: May 1st, against Waikato Unicol (Division 1)

Our Champs - Waikato Championship The unbeaten Cambridge Champs travelled to neighbours Matamata. Cambridge were fairly confident going in to the game and still able to name a strong squad despite the absent starting goalkeeper, Rex Fowler. Player-coach Josh Dagnall filled Fowler’s big gloves this week in net as Mason Woodall made his first competitive start for the champs this season after pre-season injury. The game kicked off with both teams locking horns in the midfield for the first 5 minutes before the reds started to gain the upper hand. Both Bradley Sauvarin and Tom Woutersen fired a couple of longrange warning shots from the midfield before Dylan Blair went on a mazy solo run beating 3 Matamata players out on the right to open up the first real chance of the game but the shot went agonisingly wide. The writing was on the wall however, as a great bit of tiki-taka football led to the ball bobbling up to veteran striker Jason Szabo with his back to goal. Instead of bringing it down he directed a first-time header straight in to the path of the on-rushing Mason Woodall to slot it calmly past the oncoming Matamata keeper in the 28th minute. No more than 10 minutes later, Cambridge switched the play from left to right with some of the best one-touch passing seen all season before Sauvarin played a perfectly weighted through-ball to the bye line for Ryan Ashby to cut back to Blair who was rushing in to the 6-yard box, but he was denied by a great bit of last ditch defending. That was how it remained going in to half time with Cambridge continuing to look comfortable with a couple of half chances and maintaining the bulk of possession. Young Ben Mwangi came off the bench to replace ‘Big Red’ Luke Ashby at half time as the reds looked to utilise their 5 substitutes. The second half carried on in much the same manner as the first with the reds dominating possession and peppering the Matamata goal throughout. Another big chance fell to Dylan Blair who was put 1on-1 with the keeper who made a brilliant save to deny the hungry striker. Aaron Huesser, Adam Brady and Wade Ellis came off the bench to bring fresh legs to the front 6 and it nearly paid off when Aaron Huesser found himself through on goal minutes after coming on, only for the keeper to brilliantly tip his shot on to the post. Chances fell to Brady and Woutersen before the ball was cut back to the fresh Wade Ellis on the edge of the 6 yard box for what looked like a guaranteed goal. The backpeddling defence was enough to put off the midfielder though as he spurned his shot wide of the open net. It was starting to feel like one of those games for Cambridge who just couldn’t put the game to bed. Funnell came off the bench to add some legs to the wide areas as the champs were looking to see the game out and it was looking like the game was heading for a comfortable 1-0 win. Suddenly, 5 minutes after the allocated 90 and in the dying embers of the game, Matamata found themselves in a rare position high up the pitch with a throw-in near the Cambridge right hand side of the box. The ball was brought down by the Matamata winger who squirmed through 2 challenges, beat the last defender to hit the byline and then hit an inch perfect cross to the Matamata striker at the back post who flew in with a diving header to the jubilation of the home crowd and players. The game finished then with a 1-1 draw for the second week in a row for the champs who have come away from both draws feeling like defeats after not putting the games to bed. Bradley Sauvarin was named player of the day with a special mention to Dylan Blair for a tireless effort up top, but the entire Champs boys put a shift in and showed that they are moving in the right direction to taking this league.

Josh Dagnall

Champs Player Coach
