Cambridge Football Club - The Red Review 25/06/2022

The History of Cambridge Football Club Cambridge FC was established in 1948, based in the heart of the town. In 1967, Cambridge moved from the city to our new home on Vogel Street known as John Kerkhof Park - named after one of our great former club presidents. In 1974 Cambridge competed for the first time in the Northern League and played in the competition in various tiers of the league till the present day with only a few years playing in WaiBOP Premiership. In 2013 Cambridge was appointed as the home ground for WaiBOP United in the National League. In 2015, CFC hosted its first international match between Fiji and Hungary, as the teams preparation for the Under 20 FIFA World Cup. Cambridge has had its share of professional and internationally capped players coming through the ranks of the club. Notably players like Chris Wood, Che Bunce, Katie Duncan and Andrea Rogers have all worn the red and white stripes. In recent years Cambridge has had 4 players represent New Zealand at age group world cups as well as a handful of players playing for the national futsal team as well.

Coaches Corner - An Update! We would like to welcome Franklin United to John Kerkhof park for round 8 of this years NRFL Division 2 campaign. We would like to say a big thank you to all of our volunteers and committee members for the ongoing work they put in behind the scenes to make sure everything is in place for game days like today. We would also like to say a big thank you to our sponsors, Ebbett Toyota for their ongoing support to the team and the club and providing us vans to travel to and from these important games. . Coming off the back of what may look like a tough result the boys are still in high spirits after a fantastic display against a top New Zealand side Auckland United in round 3 of the Chatham cup last weekend. Holding Auckland United to 1.1 at half time unfortunately the second half did not go our way and we finished 6.1 down. We got straight back into training Tuesday night and the momentum is back and the boys are buzzing for this weekends game against Franklin United. We are expecting a very tough game this weekend against franklin United who currently sit 1 point above Cambridge in the league after some very good results. The red men are looking forward to putting on a show in hope of gaining the 3 points and moving up the ladder. Once again I would like to thank our sponsors, volunteers and committee members for all of their hard work and lastly a big thank you to all the supporters who have turned up week in week out to support the boys. We would also like to wish all the other Cambridge teams all the best for their upcoming matches this weekend.

Paddy's Corner! Kia Ora Cambridge whanau, Welcome to another big match here at John Kerkhof park. The boys are going from strength to strength and the momentum is building. Last week we played away, in the third round of the Chatham Cup, to one of the big names of New Zealand football in Auckland United. The boys were excellent in the first half and matched a team 2 divisions higher, at times outplaying the Auckland outfit. The second half proved a little tougher as the home side showed their ability to play consistently quick football for the 90minutes, eventually running away with the win. I am so proud of the boys and the character they showed. It also highlighted that we are worthy competition for higher ranked teams. If we take this into our league performances, there is no reason why we can't now aim for a top 2 finish. Todays match sees us against Franklin United. Our past games have seen some pretty competitive clashes and, with what is at stake, I’m sure today will be no different. Welcome to Cambridge and we look forward to this afternoon. COME ON THE REDS!!

Paddy Woodlock

Captain of the NRFL Mens Division 2 Reds.

Our Women - Waikato Division 1 Mānawatia a Matariki! Our Women’s first team have entered round two of our competition and are heading into this long weekend in fourth place. We are building some very strong momentum each week and we are so proud of our team so far. We are coming off the back of some exciting results with a close game against top of the table Taupo and a draw with second placed Northern. Our football is exciting to watch and our ladies are genuinely enjoying themselves which is exactly what we set out to achieve this year. Not only is our football looking nice, both our on and off field kits are looking suave too. A huge thank you to our primary sponsor, Hill Homes. While we were kicked out of the Kate Sheppard Cup I think the timing of that game helped change the course of our season and has seen us get stronger each week, refocusing our energy and our style of play. Our ladies have really bonded as a team, and we are continuing to develop a tight team culture this season. We’re lucky enough to have our Development team to train and play with, especially with some sickness and injury challenges. We look forward to further extending our Female Football squad in the lead up to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It’s awesome to see so many females at the club when we have dual home games, or when we welcome our friends from CHS to train with us or play their games under the lights. This week we head to Jansen Park to play Unicol before we come home to John Kerkhof to play Ngaruawahia. Bring your family and friends down and make some noise for us, it’ll be a great game!

Steph Upton

Manager - Division One Women
