Cambridge Football Club - The Red Review 14/05/2022

The History of Cambridge Football Club Cambridge FC was established in 1948, based in the heart of the town. In 1967, Cambridge moved from the city to our new home on Vogel Street known as John Kerkhof Park - named after one of our great former club presidents. In 1974 Cambridge competed for the first time in the Northern League and played in the competition in various tiers of the league till the present day with only a few years playing in WaiBOP Premiership. In 2013 Cambridge was appointed as the home ground for WaiBOP United in the National League. In 2015, CFC hosted its first international match between Fiji and Hungary, as the teams preparation for the Under 20 FIFA World Cup. Cambridge has had its share of professional and internationally capped players coming through the ranks of the club. Notably players like Chris Wood, Che Bunce, Katie Duncan and Andrea Rogers have all worn the red and white stripes. In recent years Cambridge has had 4 players represent New Zealand at age group world cups as well as a handful of players playing for the national futsal team as well.

Coaches Corner - Chatham Cup Ahead! On behalf of Cambridge Football Club we would like to welcome Onehunga Mangere to John Kerkhof Park. We would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors, volunteers and committee members for all the hard work that is put in behind the scenes. Last week we made the trip 333km up north to find our first win of the season. We would like to say a big thank you to our sponsor Ebbett Toyota for providing the van to get the boys up and back safely from Whangarei. After a bit of a tough start to this season, the boys went into the game with a plan and sticking to the plan found us going into the break 1-0 up with the goal coming from fantastic build up play and a composed finish from Glen Carmichael. Into the second half the boys came out with the mentality the game was still 0-0, pressing high and getting another goal this time with golden boy Josh Clarkin being added to the score sheet. We are very excited to welcome Onehunga Mangere to Cambridge for todays match and round two of the Chatham cup. We expect a very tough game from Onehunga who have started very strong and currently sitting 3rd in the NRFL division one. Coming off the back of a win and a great weeks training we are looking forward to putting on a smasher of a game for the Cambridge supporters. Once again I would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors, volunteers and committee members. It is awesome to have our first cup game at home and we look to put on a show with the aim and focus of progressing into the next round. Cup feeling is a different feeling and I can already tell you that the boys will be up for it anything can happen in the cup. We're proud of our lads & ready for the challenge.

How A Win Can Change Anything! Hello again and welcome back to John Kerkhof Park. How a win can change everything! Our first points for the season off the back of a great performance, 333km away from home against Northland. Exactly what was needed to kickstart our season. The boys were clinical and I couldn’t be prouder of the positive response to what has been a tough start. The support shown by the club on the journey North really stirred the boys on and was key in our win. Today we have a new challenge as we take a break from the league and turn our attention to the Chatham Cup. Traditionally, we have drawn big clubs and today is no different as we welcome familiar opponents in Onehunga Mangere United. This will be a tough match against a division 1 outfit who are proving to be contenders for their league. We like the underdog tag and today we look forward to what Im sure will be a hotly contested match. I look forward to your support once again & thanks again #UP THE REDS!!

Patrick Woodlock

Captain of the NRFL Mens Division 2 Reds.

On behalf of the Cambridge Football Club, we wish our ladies all the best on the road this weekend!

Cambridge Football Club - The Red Review 14/05/2022

Our Women - Waikato Division 1 The Women’s first team has had a very strong start to their season with two wins and one draw so far! We have worked as a unit throughout our first games together and have made it a priority to have each other’s back which has made it such a great environment to be in! This weekend we are away at Beachlands Maraetai in the Kate Sheppard Cup which is going to be such a great experience for them. Going into this game we want to ensure that we are working well as a team & playing enjoyable football. Our squad has been working hard on different skills to ensure that we can reach our highest potential that we possibly can! We have a lot of natural talent in the squad, and we have a bunch of amazing players who give their all 100% of the time, we back our girls all the way and we all can’t wait to step onto the pitch and give it our all! Our goal is to win and move forward into the next round of the KSC but we also want to continue our journey we started in preseason which is to develop a group of players that are proud of the way they play, proud to wear the Cambridge shirt and support each other to be the best they can be on and off the field.

Our Champs - Waikato Champs The unbeaten Cambridge champs travelled to Bay of plenty high-fliers Otumoetai last weekend expecting a similarly tight encounter like they had last season in which a Ryan Ashby injury time strike was the difference in a 3-2 win for the reds. Cambridge were without a full bench for the first time this season, only naming two bench players (one of which was the injured R. Ashby who couldn’t play at all unless desperate). The first half began with the teams battling away in midfield with both teams easing in to the game. An early Cambridge attack after good wing play by Jordan Silvester led to Otumoetai clearing their lines to Josh Dagnall who hit a shot from distance in to the crowded box, which Peter Buesnel flicked on to the post with his head. Both teams were restricted to half-chances and shots from range as the defences were coming out on top and the first half ended in a stalemate but Cambridge felt like they were in relative control. Cambridge came out in the second half dominating possession as the Otumoetai defence tired. The pressure soon paid off after some delightful passing led to Buesnel holding the ball up in the midfield, before perfectly laying it back to Tom Woutersen. Woutersen then played a perfectly threaded through-ball to winger, Adam Brady who expertly chipped the onrushing goalkeeper to the delight of the away supporters. That goal settled the nerves and Cambridge really began to find their rhythm with Woutersen hitting a 30-yard wonderstrike that cannoned off the bar moments later. Otumoetai were rattled but tried to change their formation and launch players forward which left some gaps at the back. Around the 70 minute mark, the pacey Jordan Silvester exploited this new found space and whipped in a pinpoint cross from the byline right on to the head of veteran striker Jason Szabo. Szabo leapt like a salmon to hammer home a trademark headed goal into the old postage stamp of the goal, giving the outstretched keeper no chance. The final 10 minutes ended with Otumoetai throwing everything at the Cambridge backline hoping to find a way back but the champs were not to be denied this week with reds goalkeeper, Rex Fowler, orchestrating the defensive effort from in net. And that was how it finished with the lads holding on to the 2-0 victory, finally breaking their run of three successive 1-1 draws. All the boys played well but the man of the match went to winger Adam Brady for his tireless performance on the left wing and a well taken goal. Next week we have a local derby, hosting Claudelands Rovers at John Kerkhof park.
