Strength in Community

THE 2025 EDITION of The Essential Guide to Architects, Builders, and Design celebrates California’s vibrant and diverse creative talent. As the world’s fourth-largest economy, our state is home to exceptional architects, builders, and interior designers—each bringing a distinct voice and vision to the built environment. In the wake of the devastating Southern California fires, we are once again reminded of the profound importance of home—the spaces where our lives unfold and memories are made.
This issue offers inspiration and resources for anyone embarking on a building or remodeling journey. The Architect section opens with a feature on the Palisades Design Network, highlighting the innovative Case Study 2.0 project—an invaluable starting point for those rebuilding. In the Builder section, we spotlight the outstanding work of project management firm Peak Projects. And in the Design section, we explore the narrative-rich ceramics of San Pedro-based artist Myungjin Kim.
The professionals featured in this guide have been thoughtfully selected and vetted by the editors of California Homes. These leaders in architecture, construction, and design exemplify excellence and vision. Thank you for your continued readership and support of California Homes.

CENTRIC VISION Community
A Coalition of Architects and Design Professionals Unite

Geddes Ulinskas Architects
KAA Interior
The Palisades Design Network is a coalition of acclaimed architects and design professionals from the Los Angeles area, united in the aftermath of the Palisades and Eaton wildfires. Founded by Grant Kirkpatrick of KAA Design, the network brings together a distinguished roster—including ), architects, Evans Architects, Landry Design Group, McLean Design, Marmol Radziner, Appleton Partners, Backen & Backen, Forest Studio, Michael G. Imber Architects, Paul Bryant Williger Architect, PHX, Studio William Hefner, Warner Group Architects and designers, Christine Markatos Design, Elizabeth Dinkel Design Associates, ODG Interiors and landscape architects Hoffman & Ospina forming an integrated team committed to guiding homeowners through the intricacies of recovery and reconstruction.

PDN’s services go far beyond architectural design, encompassing expedited permitting, FEMA and insurance guidance, geotechnical analysis, and referrals to trusted contractors and engineers. Their advocacy for emergency ordinances, permit streamlining, and self-certification protocols accelerates the return to safe, permanent housing. “We’re not just designing homes—we’re designing pathways back to stability,” a member notes.
A pivotal initiative aligned with this mission is Case Study 2.0, led by Crest Real Estate, which reimagines the midcentury Case Study House program for the wildfire era. Through pre-approved, resilient home designs and streamlined entitlement processes, Crest and PDN are delivering replicable, aesthetically refined solutions that can be quickly implemented in affected communities. What sets PDN apart is its community-scale vision. The network champions neighborhood resilience— advocating for buried utilities, shared infrastructure, and walkable environments—while anchoring design in classical, proportion-driven architecture, particularly through the influence of Erik Evens.
Operating as both a professional collective and a public resource, PDN fosters transparency through community briefings, town halls, and direct client engagement. As Evens reflects, “There’s an extraordinary sense of responsibility when you’re designing for people who’ve lost everything. Our job is to bring back not just their home, but their peace of mind.” Through a blend of artistry, advocacy, and care, PDN is redefining how architects can serve in times of crisis.

ARTISTRY, CRAFTSMANSHIP, HERITAGE
There’s an undeniable feeling of warmth, history, and enduring comfort when you walk into a home designed by Michael G. Imber Architects. Their thoughtful consideration of scale and materiality coupled with an impeccable approach to craftsmanship coalesce to form a sense of belonging and authenticity in their structures. With studios in San Antonio, Texas and Santa Barbara, California, their designs are a reflection of artistry, craft, detail, and light, rooted in a romance of the past yet carefully considered for our modern lifestyles.
Their design process starts with landscapes–not only geographical, but also cultural–creating a home whose spirit is informed by a unique blend of the land on which its built and an understanding of the history and tradition surrounding it. The studio’s approach to design is centered around their deep understanding and love of artistic expression in the development of a project’s character. Michael’s recent book, The Art of the Architect, exemplifies the studio’s view of architecture as art and celebrates the value of art in the process of design, giving their buildings meaning and substance.

Paul Brant Williger Architect
ORDER, RESOLUTION & BEAUTY
For more than three decades, Paul Brant Williger has dedicated his talents to fulfilling the residential requirements and dreams of a host of discriminating high-end clients. The reputation he has built is that of a gifted architect with a proven ability to engage with patrons in such a way as to permit them to articulate and realize their own visions.
Williger began his career in the office of Robert A.M. Stern and, like Stern, displays a keen understanding of the requisites for luxury living, his bespoke skills having been honed in the affluent enclaves of Southern California, from Laguna Beach and Montecito to Malibu and Beverly Hills. Although known for his fluency in a number of architectural traditions, Williger is not one to place style over substance. “The signature or brand is not crucial for me. What is important is that I have realized my clients’ desires and gone beyond their expectations. That’s when I know I have done my job.” This mantra has served him well and has been one of the keys to his building the exclusive and discerning client base that has followed him to his namesake architectural firm, Paul Brant Williger. “My approach,” he explains, “is to begin with the clients’ dreams, together with the site and the project parameters, and to articulate these into a built form. My task is to find the opportunities in each situation which, when addressed intelligently, add depth and richness to a project.”
My clients come to me because they know that along the way we will navigate that process without losing sight of the aesthetics. The goal is order, resolution and beauty–not just getting a building permit.”

Wade Weissmann Architecture
CREATING HEIRLOOM ESTATES, MASTER PLANS, RENOVATIONS, AND LIFECHANGING BESPOKE ARCHITECTURE
Uniquely inspired by the individuality of each client and location, a Wade Weissmann Architecture house is a custom representation of a specific dream, yet every house embodies hallmarks of timeless design and heirloom quality craftsmanship that only get better with age.
Approached holistically, the feelings evoked by the unique spaces and environments are integral to the creative process. The multitude of factors that need to be considered, such as location, landscape and topography, views, and weather patterns, among others, become infused into the finest details of the designs. You might call the architects at WWA detail obsessed.
Designs are often initially imagined by hand, sometimes on a cocktail napkin at a meeting with a potential client. WWA uses both hand sketching and rendering techniques that hearken back to earlier eras of architecture, while also being acutely aware of the modern conveniences and efficiencies essential to day-to-day living. Sketches become renderings via computer-aided modeling, layering in architectural detail that builds upon the character of your space and is essential to telling the story of place, from the smallest detail on the stairway to the millwork featured throughout a particular room. Whether visualizing ground up architecture or reimagining through renovation, historical precedent is regularly referenced. WWA remains committed to constantly learning from the past and leaning into what is current and fresh, not trendy, simply timeless.

Shaping Story IN CLAY
San Pedro based Ceramicist MyungJin Kim

MYUNGJIN KIM IS A SAN PEDRO–BASED CERAMICIST whose richly detailed terracotta vessels transcend function to become sculptural narratives. Born in South Korea in 1975 and trained at Seoul National University, Kim draws deeply from her cultural roots, blending the visual language of Korean folk painting with contemporary form. Her hand-built pieces—often shaped like urns, altars, or talismans—are adorned with low-relief sculptural motifs: exotic fruits, mythic birds, and botanicals drawn from her San Pedro garden.
Kim’s ceramics speak in hushed, symbolic tones. Series like Paradise and Hortus Talisman evoke sacred spaces and personal memory, conjuring ancestral altars and protective charms. Influenced by Minhwa (Korean folk painting) and Hwajodo (bird-and-flower imagery), her work often features animals as guardians and companions—owls, phoenixes, and flora with mythological undertones.
Her surfaces, burnished with terra sigillata, feel ancient and tactile, like unearthed relics from a timeless civilization. The vessels become sites of ritual and storytelling— part reliquary, part dreamscape. Kim’s work is held in major collections, including the Jordan Schnitzer Museum and the Archie Bray Foundation, where she completed a prestigious residency.
In Kim’s world, clay remembers. Her vessels do more than contain—they speak, protect, and invite the viewer into an ongoing myth of beauty, resilience, and reverence. mjkimstudio.com futureperfect.com ago-projects.com

Calimingo Pools
LUXURY POOLS & OUTDOOR LIVING
Set against a stunning California sunset, this outdoor retreat by design-build firm Calimingo Pools is a masterful fusion of luxury, nature, and architectural innovation. More than a backyard, the space is a thoughtfully designed sanctuary where fire, water, and structure come together in perfect harmony.
At the heart of the design is a sunken fire pit, carved below ground level and framed by a weeping water wall and Calimingo’s signature fire cages. Surrounded by plush, custom-upholstered seating, it offers an intimate escape, illuminated by ambient lighting that adds moody elegance after dark.
Nearby, an expansive pool with a dramatic waterfall installation and sculpted artificial stone creates a luxe grotto effect. LED lighting enhances the atmosphere, while a zero-edge pool and spa with a seamless spillover edge delivers both visual impact and relaxation.
The design features a sleek concrete grid with turf inlays that unify the space from pool to patio to a contemporary outdoor kitchen and lounge. The home’s large sliding glass pocket doors further blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, creating a seamless flow.
Sustainable touches like drought-tolerant landscaping reflect Calimingo’s commitment to responsible luxury. Every element—from material choices to lighting—has been curated to transform outdoor living into a truly immersive, resort-style experience.
In this Calimingo masterpiece, luxury isn’t just seen—it’s felt. This is outdoor living elevated to an art form.
