FXW SERVATORY: Exploratory Day with a Charitable Twist! By Lourdes Taylor raditionally, exploratory was thought of by the FXW community as a day of fun and exciting exploration of the city with lots of friends and laughter and good times. But this year, FXW Jaguars kicked it up a notch and had all the exploratory fun BUT all options revolved around service! Students went across the city and did service at different schools/organizations. All the 5th and 6th graders went to Misericordia, and had a great time. "I went to Misericordia and worked with the Candy Days project. I asked people for donations, and in return they got a pack of jelly beans. I had a lot of fun with my friends, "said 6th grader Noah Taylor when asked about his SERVatory experience. The 7th and 8th graders went to many different places to do service. "I went into a store where they gave out free clothing to the homeless and people in need. I think it was a really rewarding experience; being able to help the less fortunate taught me to be more grateful for what I have," said 8th grader Elizabeth Donnelly when asked about her SERVratory day. Seventh and 8th graders also helped a variety of different people. “I helped the St. Columbanus Church make spaghetti for the less fortunate, and I also helped them set up a fundraiser for the next day.” But none of this would’ve been possible without they help an ingenuity of FXW teachers, such as Spanish teacher Mrs. McGann and 7th and 8th grade social studies teacher Ms. Campe. Ms. Campe explained, “I thought the service exploratory was a great idea because it allowed for the FXW community explore our great city of Chicago in a different way. Rather than exploring different aspects of our city by playing soccer or eating cheesecake the students got
T
to see how other Chicagoans lived. Whether those Chicagoans were older than us, younger than us, or lived life differently, we were able to explore their daily lives through service and learning. I personally feel that the day was an incredible experience, and I'm so happy that I got to experience the day with 24 amazing students. ” Mrs. Miller was another teacher who played an integral part in organizing the day. “Once Mrs. McGann shared her idea, I realized spring exploratory fell on Misericordia Candy Days. My brother-in-law, Craig, lives at Misericordia, so I was eager to get students involved. Throughout the planning process, I was able to share my personal experiences at Mis with the 5th and 6th grade. We focused on how important it is to give back to your community and advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. We asked ourselves, ‘If we don't help them, who will?’” FXW Jaguars will! All in all, from children to churches, the Jaguars were there to help!
