TURNING DREAMS INTO FUTURES 2012-13 ANNUAL REPORT

MISSION The Children at the Crossroads Foundation was created in 1990 on the belief that economic circumstances should not preclude an eager and capable child from receiving a quality education. The Foundation seeks to enrich our community by significantly improving the academic achievement, self-esteem and life opportunities of school children by offering need-based scholarship support to students attending The Frances Xavier Warde School. Dear Friends of CATC, As a founding member of the Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC), I’ve had the opportunity to watch the foundation grow from a dream in 1990 to an organization that has awarded over $10.6 million in scholarships in less than three decades. We are making an impact; we are making a difference, and our achievements deserve a moment of reflection and celebration. We were created in 1990 with the mission of raising funds to give every child the opportunity of an excellent education. Since the first scholarships awarded in the 1990s to our next generation of scholars, we can be proud to say that we have touched the lives of over 540 students and families. It has been a pleasure and honor to watch our students develop into inquisitive adolescents and innovative young professionals. As they continue on to high school, college and beyond, CATC scholars come to know the value of the education and foundational experiences they received at The Frances Xavier Warde School. I’m proud of the work CATC has accomplished and am excited about the future impact for our cause, our children, our future. To our donors, partners and friends, I thank you for inspiring our scholars and helping them learn, grow and become citizens of our great city and world. In reviewing our 2012-2013 annual report, I hope you will become or remain inspired to provide academically excellent opportunities for students. Gratefully,

Mary Ellen Caron Chair of CATC Board

“Listening to the scholarship recipients speak about their experiences at the dinner has allowed our kids to see the impact our family’s giving has on the recipients’ lives... It has had a powerful impact on our lives, as well.”

OUR STORIES MARY AND BOB RUEBENSON PARENTS OF MORGAN (FXW ’06) AND DYLAN (FXW ‘10)

When Mary and Bob Ruebenson enrolled their daughter, Morgan, at FXW in 1995, they had no idea how great an impact the choice of a school for their children would have on their own lives. “FXW is such a tight knit community,” says Bob. “We have made so many friends as a result of our involvement with FXW,” he continued. While looking for a school for their children, Bob and Mary sought out a school that would expose them to families from different backgrounds. “We wanted [our children] to understand that the world is bigger than they are,” said Mary. “We thought it was important that they knew that sometimes it just takes a little extra help for people to achieve their dreams,” adds Bob. “We also wanted them to learn the importance of giving back,” says Mary. “Both Bob and I believe that everyone is entitled to a good education, no matter their circumstances,” she says. As supporters of Children at the Crossroads Foundation, Bob and Mary attend the Scholarship Dinner and last year Morgan attended with them. “Listening to the scholarship recipients speak about their experiences at the dinner has allowed our kids to see the impact our family’s giving has on the recipients’ lives,” says Mary. “It has had a powerful impact on our lives, as well,” she says.

“At FXW, students were more open to learning. They cared about their coursework. The students were more scholarly and the teachers were more engaged and passionate, it made me want to work even harder.”

TERRANCE CHATMAN FXW ALUMNUS—CLASS OF 2002

When Terrance Chatman transferred to FXW in the 6th grade, he was immediately struck by how nice everyone was. “I was intimidated to be the new kid at first, but everyone was so nice, so gracious,” he says. Terrance, who was raised by his now 80 year old cousin, believes that FXW changed the trajectory of his life. “I wasn’t challenged at my old school,” he says. “At FXW, students were more open to learning. They cared about their coursework. The students were more scholarly and the teachers were more engaged and passionate,” he says. “It made me want to work even harder,” he finishes. “FXW taught me what was important at a young age,” says Terrance. “It taught me to value education,” he says. “I want to pass those values on,” he continues, “I was born into a situation and all I needed was someone to believe in me, in my potential. I know that I would not be where I am today without scholarship support and I know that I must continue the cycle by paying it forward.” Terrance graduated from Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and DePaul University. He now works at MicroTrain and remains involved with FXW through the Alumni Association.

“FXW and CATC have given my children so much, not only were they prepared academically, they learned to truly value others, and that, is invaluable.”

CARROYL JONES 2ND GRADE LITERACY TEACHER

Carroyl Jones remembers her job interview with then Head of School, Mary Ellen Caron, over twenty-three years ago. “Mary Ellen was so passionate about her vision for the school. She wanted FXW to be a place where students from all over Chicago could come regardless of race, religion or socio-economic status.” She continues, “I knew I wanted to be a part of FXW right then and there.” Jones, a soft-spoken 2nd grade teacher whose six children have attended or are attending FXW, has played a big part in ensuring that FXW has stayed true to that mission. Over the past 23 years, she has played a central role in developing the “Shooting Stars” curriculum, the non-Catholic counterpart to the “Moonbeams” Catholic-based religious education. More recently, she has taken on a role as the 2nd grade literacy teacher. Jones probably holds the record for having had the most children attend FXW, and she knows that FXW would not have been a possibility for her family without support from CATC. “FXW and CATC have given my children so much,” she says. “Not only were they prepared academically, they learned to truly value others,” she says. “And that,” she says, “is invaluable.” Pictured with Carroyl are her children: PJ (FXW ‘03), Javin (FXW ‘12), Leah (FXW ‘16), Sarah (FXW ‘20), Hannah (FXW ‘22), and Rebekah (FXW ‘22)

Scholarship Sunday Since the founding of The Frances Xavier Warde School in 1989, and our own founding in 1990, CATC has worked in partnership with Holy Name Cathedral and Old St. Patrick parishes for faith formation and as a source of Catholic leadership. Through the generosity of parishioners at both parishes, Scholarship Sunday annual collections raised $80,887 for FY13. Funds generated from Scholarship Sunday ensure that outstanding achievement remains paramount in the ethnically, religiously, culturally and socio-economically diverse community of bright students and gifted teachers that call The Frances Xavier Warde School home. WAYS TO GIVE Donors to Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC) are essential partners in our mission—generous individuals, corporations and foundations who also believe in a world where children are empowered to reach their full potential. There are many ways to make a tax-deductible gift to CATC. No matter which method you choose, your support is deeply appreciated.

Direct Gifts Direct monetary gifts are accepted in the form of checks, charges or money orders. Payments can be made to the offices of Children at the Crossroads Foundation or visit our website www.catc.org to donate online. Please contact a development officer for more information on giving or making a pledge.

Gifts of Stock The Children at the Crossroads Foundation accepts gifts of stock held at a brokerage house or in certificate form. Instructions for giving stock or bond can be accessed by visiting http://catc.org/ways-to-give/giving-to-catc/

Matching Gifts Under our Matching Gifts program, your employer may double or even triple your gift. The Children at the Crossroads Foundation Matching Gifts Program will help you to complete the necessary paperwork to request a matching gift from your employer. Once the paperwork has been filed, we will follow-up with your employer to ensure that your gift is matched.

Planned Gifts Wills, charitable remainder trusts, and life insurance policies offer the opportunity for leaving a lasting legacy to benefit future CATC scholars, while providing the donor with income, tax, and personal benefits.

Gifts-In-Kind To make a donation of goods or services rather than cash or appreciated property please contact Kymberly Marrinson, Director of Development at 312.268.2567.

Questions and More Information For questions and additional information, please contact Kymberly Marrinson, Director of Development at 312.268.2567.
