Colorado Director with some Texas ties, Mr. Ty Curtis King and Battle Yard Films, Inc., are in the pre-production phase on their first feature action/thriller motion picture “Dark Watch”. Written by Mr. King the story follows a young woman who holds the secret to human survival in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a huge solar storm that came in the form of a chemical heat wave that has erased most of humanity from the face of the earth. With a disaster plan in place, the “Government” had never declared a state of emergency because of the severity and threat of the storm was on a massive and epic logical scale. There was no need to declare an emergency as nothing on earth could save you from what was to come. But there were survivors. When a religious cult blames the disaster on the lack of Christian faith, the radical zealots take the “act of god” into their own hands by banding together and executing the innocent. When the young savior of humanity is threatened, a mysterious group of warriors called the Knights of the New Order, rise up to protect her and battle the band of radicals. Casting includes Houston’s Kristin Cochell as Madison Snow, John Wells, Tamika Caldwell and Sabrina Scott. The feature movie is set to be shot in Colorado in the beginning of 2016. C47Houston will keep you posted. Learn more about “Dark Watch” on F**ebook and “Like” them at: https://www.facebook.com/DarkWatchMovie/

“From now on, I am not going to pretend to have less talent than I actually have. I always hear and read these “mofo’s saying ‘we all have to start somewhere’, then I watch the sh**ty films they make, and it’s like...really? YOU did that? Seriously, I should be teaching YOU how to make a movie. I admit, I am, definitely, not a pro, but, I am not a beginner arse-scrub like you who just learned how to use a DSLR”. Filmmaker Derek Huey

With a bunch of money in their hands and thinking their worries are over, the couple now has to run from people intent on getting this money back. The Russians are psychotic and will do anything to get them. They just want the money and could care either way whether the Shaffers live or die. (An interesting not is that Mr. Ayers wrote this screenplay in Tom Vaughan’s Story & Plot class. So it has to be good) Produced by Carrie Fitch, Chris Spisak and Trae Stanley, casting for this movie includes a huge list of Houston talent including David Maldonado as Greg, Jennifer Rogers as Linda, Neal Kodinsky, Elsa Marquez, Eric Reinholt, James Glen Tucker, Troy Parker, Tim Anderson, Heather Williams, Chad Thackston, Susan Ly, Peter Malek, John Ostermann, Antoinette Anders, Mark Isaacs, Joe Bunner, Howard Calvert and Ben C. Houston Writer and Director Mel House and his production company Upstart Filmworks have decided to try another crowdfunding campaign for their new feature movie “30 to 45”. Their last crowdfunding campaign via IndieGoGo closed at the end of June, last month (started June 1st) and garnered just a little over three thousand dollars and met 8% of their 40K goal. This is on top of the funds secured by their Pizza Party/Fundraiser at the Star Pizza Espresso Room last month, Monday, June 22nd. Currently, the team has now opened a KickStarter page in order to garner fund for this movie. Unlike IndieGoGo, KickStarter is an all-or-nothing campaign. If you don’t make the stated goal, within the allotted time on KickStarter, the filmmaking team will NOT get any funds. With their current KickStarter campaign, the team has a lofty goal of $20K to meet, and, as of this publication has a little under $600.00 in pledges and less than 4 weeks to reach their goal. Written by Mr. House, the story follows Eric a multiracial genre filmmaker with several projects, three day-jobs and a ton of baggage to deal with. Described as a confessional, cautionary tale, motivational speech, acts of catharsis and comedic experiment all rolled into one. It is joking pitched as “A Nightmare on Elm Street” meets “Hollywood Shuffle”. Casting includes Omar Adam, Debbie Rochon, Tye Blue, Lisa Wilcox, Richard Riehle, Angelo Moore, Chelsea Ryan McCurdy, Jill Brumer and Steve Scott just to name a few names. You may remember Director Mel House for his cult movies, “Closet Space”, “Psychic Experiment” (AKA: “Walking Distance), one of the rotating directors of “Placeholders”, and the producer of Chris Warren’s “Imago”, Tiffany Heath’s “Spavine” and Michael Steves’ “Clinger”. We will keep you posted on new developments. Learn more and “Like” them on F**ebook at: www.facebook.com/30to40/ and on the Upstart Filmworks website at: www.UpstartFilmworks.net/ Want to help the team make their goal on KickStarter? All you have to do is go to their KickStarter page at: http://kck.st/1Hq2QUg follow the links and DONATE. Yes, it’s that easy. We will keep you posted.

With a love of classic science fiction movies, Bill Hughes began his venture of making his first feature movie as an artist doodling with robots and strange creatures that may lurk on planets beyond our solar system. He quickly published his first comic book in high school and moved toward utilizing his drawing skills at several advertising agencies after graduating from college. When Bill was offered an opportunity to draw for Dark Horse Comics on their Star Wars: Droids series he couldn’t pass that up and designed not only creatures and robots but, had a chance to created science fiction props including ships, planets, weaponry and costumes, all of which brings Mr. Hughes to his present feature Sci-Fi motion picture “Matt Mercury: Plot of the Galactic Mastermind”. Mr. Hughes is premiering his Directorial Feature Science Fiction motion picture at this year’s Space City ComicCon, next weekend, Saturday, July 25th at 5PM. We are always interested in getting some insight in to what makes a person want to make a movie and we posed some questions for Mr. Hughes. Here is what he has to say….

C47Houston: The premiere screening of “Matt Mercury: Plot of the Galactic Mastermind” is coming up at this year’s Space City ComicCon. How excited are you about premiering your movie?

Mr. Hughes: “Matt Mercury” is a family movie and was made for kids and families and folks who remember when science fiction was fun. We are very proud of the film and I can’t wait to see it with an audience. Actor and Producer Matt Lavine (who plays Matt Mercury) and I will both be there and we plan to be at the convention all three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, next week, July 24th through July 26th at the NRG Center. C47Houston: Do you have a booth at the convention?

Mr. Hughes: We certainly do and hope that you drop by. We will have a booth where we will display “screen-used” props and we hope to even sell a few, along with all our Matt Mercury merchandising. We just couldn’t resist a little merchandising! We have badges and posters and model kits. We even have a novelization I wrote with Braxton...

Cosby and we should have a few copies of that at the table. C47Houston: Who else might be at the premiere? Mr. Hughes: I understand our big-brained nemesis in the film, Professor Brainwave, will be at the show as well. He’s a bad guy from the same mold as Dr. Smith (from Lost In Space) and he’s always a hoot! C47Houston: We have secured an exclusive interview with one of the cast members, Roc Living. He played the character Jett Lightening. Mr. Living is going to be our Featured Actor in our primary magazine C47Houston News & Entertainment Magazine. Should be released the first part of August. Mr. Hughes: First off Roc was and is AWESOME. All of our actors are so wonderful in the film! Houston has such a strong talent base and we want to make films here more than anywhere in the world because of that untapped energy. We have a lot of Hollywood folks involved with Matt Mercury just because they love the idea. An Academy Award winning artists and Star Trek guy is even in the film, but Houston, Texas is where we see our future. C47Houston: As part of the interview, with Mr. Living, he told us that one of the challenges he faced, as an actor, is having to work in front of a green screen for a lot of the movie, YOU are an expert in this area as we understand that you have created props and such for other feature movies…what is one disadvantage you faced working with green screen and on Matt Mercury that you can share as a learning tool? Mr. Hughes: So, I love green screen and, for me, it actually makes me focus on the actors during the shoot because there’s nothing else to focus on! For me the trick is to fully create the environment in your head before you go to production. I’ve seen this film a thousand times in my head before we shoot one frame. I did my best to do a lot of storyboards and pre-visualization artwork to help the actors, lighting crews and our Cinematographer see the same world that I see in my head.

C47Houston: Yeah the person behind the camera needs to be on the same page as the director in a movie and, your cinematographer did an amazing job. Mr. Hughes: I really have to give great praise to our film’s cinematographer Thomas Rolls. I’m not always the most articulate person, especially when I’m “slinging hash” in studio and Thomas was able to mind meld with me. I would spit our a series of clicks and whistles and Thomas would think for a moment and then say, “Right Bill, we have a cool bounce stage right and some red Key light right over Shontel’s left shoulder.” Thomas was absolutely amazing! C47Houston: So, lighting is vital in green screen shooting?

Mr. Hughes: You can’t do green screen without someone who knows light. Bad light throws the truth of the shot every time! I see it over and over again and I just can’t watch bad green screen work. That said…I love “green screen” work. Green screen and the new software we have in post opens up a creative universe for us. C47Houston: You wrote and directed Matt Mercury. It’s an independent project and a good one at that. What are some of the few things you have learned about the “process” of moviemaking as you come to premiere it? Mr. Hughes: Thanks for the kind words. We learned that you can’t make a film for everyone, but if you make a film you love…there will be others who “get” what you’re trying to do. People either love Matt Mercury because it takes them to that happy place that sits in shadows of their childhood memories or they hate it because it steps on some very sensitive Sci-Fi toes. C47Houston: And, you enjoy making movies that YOU make as opposed to making movies that come from other people? Mr. Hughes: Absolutely! My wife and co-writer/producer Heidi and I have tried to make movies and even comic books that other people...

wanted us to make and that just didn’t work. People can tell when you’re telling a fib on screen. We don’t use gore or sacrilege to get people’s juices flowing. We like films that build on a family of characters and take you to places you never expected to go. That’s the kind of stories we want to tell. C47Houston: Knowing what you know right now, with the movie premiere coming up, what part of the moviemaking process is the MOST important in terms of development? Mr. Hughes: Wow, that’s a hard question for me to answer… oddly enough. We threw EVERYTHING at Matt Mercury. Of all the stories we had, Matt Mercury was absolutely the most difficult to do in every way! That’s why we made it. We wanted to push the envelope and show what we could accomplish on a very small budget and only five days in-studio and two days on-location. C47Houston: Your movie was that difficult to do? We previewed the movie and it was an amazing story and a well-made movie. Mr. Hughes: Thank you…A lot of technical advances and smart logistics went into Matt Mercury. In many ways, making a movie like this is like waging a war (to paraphrase John Milieus). So, with all that going on I believe the only answer to your question is always the “story”. Making a movie is just a tool to tell a story. Your story must be direct and simple at it’s core. It has to be about something. Our story was about a man who had no emotion about the loss of his world because he was so distraught by the loss of his girl. We saw this as a nice foundation for a space-farse that pays heavy homage to all the science fiction I loved growing up in Space City Texas during the 1960s. C47Houston: Oh, a conflict and experience.

Mr. Hughes: That’s correct. I love how Sydney Pollack described the simple idea he used to spawn his epic film “Out of Africa”. He said, paraphrasing, that his film was essentially about the conflict created when a woman who wanted to control everything falls in love with a man who wants to be free above all else. I love stories about elemental human experiences. C47Houston: If you are like other directors we have spoken with over the years, you are not fully happy with the overall results of your movie. There is always something you can change, but because of budget restraints you may not have been able to do what you really wanted to do…We reviewed “Matt Mercury” and gave it high marks for it’s production value. What is something you would want to change about “Matt Mercury”, if any…OR, are you happy with what you did? Mr. Hughes: I’m going to be a contrarian and say, “I would change nothing”. I am happy with what I did. I knew where our weaknesses and strengths were in pre-production and we made the movie we could taking weaknesses and strengths into account. Since we didn’t have the budget to be taken totally seriously, we had fun with our story. C47Houston: And, you attribute this to your experience and background?

Mr. Hughes: Yes! I have a background that includes a ton of design experience, including six years on “Star Wars” projects. I made darn sure they got every dime of my free artistry on screen. EVERYTHING I envisioned ended up on screen. We made the film we set out to do. It edited together as it was written and I’m very happy with it. I love our characters and made wonderful friends in the process. If there’s anything I think I could have done better, I will do it on the next film. C47Houston: What is next for Matt Mercury…Distribution?

Mr. Hughes: As any Independent filmmaker will tell you, distribution is the hardest nut to crack. What I’ve learned about that could fill a book… and it will in the upcoming “Making of Matt Mercury” book. But, yes we have traditional distribution. C47Houston: But there is on online presence correct?

Mr. Hughes: In a nutshell, we made decisions with Matt Mercury to build an audience first and make money second. “Matt Mercury” is on Comcast in nine states, is currently available on Amazon.com and will soon be available on several other platforms via our WonderVista website later this year. Most recently, we are in negotiation with an independent network to release “Matt Mercury” as episodes, so look for that. C47Houston: What is next for Director Bill Hughes?

Mr. Hughes: We are just finishing up an animated film “The Cartoon Cow-

boys” which stars the songs and characters of two-time Grammy Award winners “Riders In The Sky” and James Drury as Buffalo Bill. Yes, we were producing an animated film at the same time we were making Matt Mercury. Madness is something of a positive trait in the movie business, I understand. C47Houston: Will your next feature contain the same or more of the special effects you used in “Matt Mercury”? Mr. Hughes: To be honest, I hope our next feature is much less of a special effects effort. We have several stories that are just as high concept as Matt Mercury, but will allow me more time to work with the actors. On Mercury I was FX guy, Art Director, Producer, Director and sometimes even an actor. Thanks God our actors were so professional. They always came prepared and carried their characters on their shoulders. I hope I can support them on the next feature. C47Houston: You have gained some valuable experience in directing, writing, acting and producing “Matt Mercury:...

Roc Living as Jett Lightning

Plot of the Galactic Mastermind”, what kind of advice can you forward to our readers and our future movie-makers? Mr. Hughes: The film business is a BUSINESS. Being professional and doing what you say you will do is an absolute requirement. You also have to be passionate and, even though today’s audiences are becoming “boutique audiences”, you still have to make something that’s entertaining. If you have a story to tell then learn the craft of filmmaking. If you aren’t burning to tell a story, then become a lifeguard. You’ll get a tan and save more girls (or guys if you’re a girl lifeguard).
