Documentarian/Filmmaker Dave Henry and Magpie River Films have announced that their first documentary “Where’s The Money” about the Stanford Financial Group is accepted to the UK Screen One Film Festival being held March 3rd through March 8th, next month in the Leicester and Nottingham area. The documentary chronicles Allen Stanford’s unlikely journey from failed Waco gym owner to Forbes-listed billionaire through his audacious Ponzi scheme, using a money-laundering bank on the Caribbean Island of Antiguan as his personal ATM. The downfall of Stanford was at the time, the biggest finacial scam in U.S. history after only Bernie Madoff, and it was a massive failure by the Security & Exchange Commission. “I’m thrilled the film got in this exciting festival,” comments Director Dave Henry. “The story really reverberates in the UK because of all the money Stanford threw at their beloved sport of cricket.” C47Houston talked about this documentary in an earlier issue, last year, 2015. A LONELY WOMAN Written and Directed by Juven Cavazos

ON Scene Video Cast/Crew

Texas and Houston Movie-maker Juven Cavazos test-screened his first feature drama/action motion picture “A Lonely Woman” Monday night, February 8th, 2016, at the Alamo Drafthouse-Vintage Park, Houston. It was a full theater. We met this photographer turned movie-maker and Director for coffee and found out a few things about him that caused in us an interest in being invited to see his directorial feature venture. First off, he is a skilled photographer who uprooted himself from San Antonio to move to Houston, and secondly, he has a distinct passion for telling a good story and making a quality production movie. Which in our opinion, he accomplished both with success. Written by Mr. Cavazos, The movie tells a story of a woman trying desperately to find the killers of her adopted parents. Twists and turns, family and greed, she finds herself kicked out of her family home and once again orphaned. But, she is determined to find out what happened and transforms herself into a cold-hearted killer out for the truth. We are skeptical about the production value of first time directors but after seeing this movie, we were amazingly surprised that this director created a very good movie. Behind the camera is New York City Cinematographer Olga Vasquez whose eye for composition, lighting and camera work can only be described as outstanding. Sure, the movie isn’t perfect and there were some glaring issues, but overall the movie was creative and well made. If you have a chance to see it you will not be disappointed. Look for our FlixReview of the movie and check out our videos on SnapChat, Twitter and our blog.

Director Juven Cavazos Talks to C47Houston WEEKLY

C47Houston: You have released your first feature movie, “A Lonely Woman” and your Directorial feature motion picture at that, how does it feel, on a personal level, to say that you have a feature movie under your belt? Director Juven Cavazos: It’s a lifetime dream come true! I started writing the script on March 3, 2013; almost 3 years ago and I hardly can believe it’s done. It actually happened! I’m very excited and looking forward to showing the film to the world. C47Houston: As a first time feature director: What was the most difficult part of YOUR job? Director Juven Cavazos: It’s definitely having to produce and direct. A problem I had as the producer was finding a crew. I’d been in Houston for two years when I started making the film. I have no family here and I didn’t know anyone in the industry. Finding a team turned out to be a nightmare. My job as producer took me away from working with the actors. I remember one day when we didn’t have a make-up artist for the next days shoot. I scrambled, got on my phone or iPad and I was looking for one. Because of that mishap, my lead actress felt abandoned by me as the director. But, it all worked out. C47Houston: What have you learned about making a movie that you will take with you in making your next feature movie? Director Juven Cavazos: I learned to work and work, refine and refine, rewrite and rewrite the script. The first cut of the film came up to be 3 hours 18 minutes. So, we ended up cutting an hour and eighteen minutes bringing it down to 2-hours. Can you imagine all the hard work and the money it took to film those 1:18? That’s horrible! The screenplay needs to be perfect before you even think about shooting one scene. C47Houston: NOW, how does a guy with no experience in making feature movies get into making a feature movie? Director Juven Cavazos: Well, ever since I can remember I always wanted to make movies. I guess I saw, in me, the talent to create stories. By trade, I’m a professional photographer and that helps quite a bit. But, mainly, I went into a bookstore, bought about 8 books about screenplay writing, directing, and film production and read them all. I really studied! One of the books I bought was Robert Rodriguez’ “A Rebel Without A Crew”. I was really inspired by it. At the end, Mr. Rodriguez says something like: “go ahead make your movie and call me so I can bring the pop corn.” So, I went ahead and made my movie. C47Houston: Knowing what you know now, about making a movie, what kind of advice can you pass along to others contemplating making their first movie? Director Juven Cavazos: I would say that it is important to decide what type of filmmaker you want to be. Do you want to be a director that makes movies with no future or a director that makes movies with “potential”? This decision will affect everything you do and how you do it. Juven Cavazos Video

C47Houston: Looking at “A Lonely Woman” from an objective POV and knowing that Directors are never really satisfied with the outcome of their pet projects due to budget restraints, what would you have done differently? Director Juven Cavazos: I would have made it a simpler story with fewer characters, less locations etc. C47Houston: ONE word: what would that word be that describes your experience in making your first feature movie? Director Juven Cavazos: NIGHTMARE.
