C47Houston

is following a lot of the independent movie makers in the Houston area and across the State of Texas. Our goal is simply to encourage them to make more movies and at the same time learn from experience what it takes to make an entertaining movie that brings in an audience from the general public. We met this upcoming movie maker a few weeks ago. He is passionate and dedicated to making movies that people want to see movies that entertain and movies that keep you in your seat. This new movie maker has put into the can his first feature motion picture called “Bloody Mary”, a horror feature based on an old story and an urban legend. He is about to premiere his feature movie in late October as part of HorrorThon, 2015. We were thrilled that this new Director accepted our invitation for an interview. We are pleased to present:

C47Houston: Thank you Johnnard for answering a few questions. It’s quite a pleasure to meet you. Are you from the Houston area?

Johnnard Harper

C47Houston: Making a feature is quite different than making a short movie… although quite similar feature movies have a lot more re-

Mr. Harper: Yes. I am from HOUSTON and to be exact, the 3rd Ward. C47Houston: You have made a few short movies and directed one short movie called “Miss Mary Mack”, and now you have moved toward making your first feature movie. Why?

Mr. Harper: Well, I felt that the only way to go is up and I believe that you have to take risks to be great. C47Houston: You have picked a horror genre movie to make as your first feature movie, do you enjoy the horror genre?

Mr. Harper: I enjoy it and I love horror films. The Horror genre is they type of genre that doesn’t really require a celebrity actor to sell. I lot of people love horror, me included.

sponsibilities and the logistics seem to be a bit more complex. In making a feature, did you find it more or less a demand on your time and energy?

duled to premiere October 28th as part of HorrorThon 2015, are you ready for the criticism or praise the movie may bring?

Mr. Harper: Making a feature takes so much energy and time. Be-

I am ready for all of the critics, whether they enjoyed it or didn’t. You just never know until it happens.

cause the movie I made was a low budget effort, I had to make sure everyone was on board. That take an enormous amount of time and energy. C47Houston: Did you go it alone or did you have a mentor that helped you through the process?

Mr. Harper: I don’t think anyone can do it alone. Actually, I had several mentors including some great people like Bruce Owdley, Sergio Leroy and Christopher Hill. C47Houston: We understand that you wrote your first feature “Bloody Mary”. Did the movie you made follow the story you wrote or as a director did you have to modify the script and the overall vision for budget reasons, or cinematic reasons?

Mr. Harper: Well, the movie didn't go exactly as planned and the way I wrote it. Special effects and other things that we couldn't pull off put a limit on what we could do. My business partner Eli llerdo and I tried everything, but at that time, we were very limited.

Mr. Harper: I am a little on the apprehensive side, but overall I think

C47Houston: From NOW until October I would imagine that the movie is still in post-production being tweaked, being touched-up and finalized…thus far are you happy with what you are seeing on the monitors?

Mr. Harper: I am happy with what we have. We actually completed the movie last year, 2014. “Bloody Mary” is in the can. We are not going to do anything more to it. It’s ready to be screen. C47Houston: As a director, what has Johnnard Harper learned about making a feature movie?

Mr. Harper: I have learned a lot. But, one of the things I've learned is that making a feature film is tougher than what a lot of people think. A director has to have patience and the ability to coordinate. Coordination is key in getting through a feature project.

C47Houston: If you had the budget, would you do it over again?

C47Houston: What have you learned about the process of making a movie?

Mr. Harper: WE only had a 15-hundred dollar budget and the cast

Mr. Harper: I learned a couple of things. I learned the importance of

and crew did a wonderful job on the movie. However, and, of course, if I had a larger budget I am pretty sure I would do it over again. C47Houston: Did you find the job of Writer/Director to be an easy one?

Mr. Harper: I think I was. To me, being a writer/director is sort of easy, because I know the look and vision that I want to show the world and onto the screen. C47Houston: “Bloody Mary” your directorial feature movie is sche-

SOUND and its impact on a movie as well as the audience. And, I learned that you really can’t make a movie without a good team and teamwork. C47Houston: Knowing what you know now, and having your first feature movie under your belt, as it were, would you do it again?

Mr. Harper: You bet I would. I love making movies. C47Houston: Besides screening “Bloody Mary” at HorrorThon 2015, what are your plans for the movie? \

Mr. Harper: Well, I am planning for private distribution. I would

couple of more feature movies and I will let you know.

really love to find someone who has a budget to re-shoot a few scenes or redo the whole film with better effects. But, in general, I think it’s going to be one of those wait-and-see type of things we will look at after the premiere.

C47Houston: How important is a good team of moviemakers for you and your project? Mr. Harper: It’s imperative to have a good team of filmmakers to help you and to be on your project. A good team just makes things a little easier and a good team of filmmakers makes everyone else's job easier. One of the things I have noticed, in the Houston film community, is that a lot of people do not want to help other filmmakers, AND, they don't understand the bigger picture. Of course, you want to get paid, but how are you going to get paid without a script. People undervalue scriptwriters. Houston has to do better with their movies.

C47Houston: Are you moving forward to making another movie?

Mr. Harper: Of course. I have a few short films that are currently in production. We plan to move those shorts into the film festivals circuit. And, I have several feature scripts that are being tweaked and currently in the pre-production phase. So, yes…I think I am moving forward to making another movie or two. C47Houston: I am sure you wore a lot of hats in making this feature movie, was it a good idea to do that? Mr. Harper: Well, if I had more funds, I would have found better locations and secured a team of special effects people to jump onboard with this movie. Wearing most of the hats is very emotionally and physically draining. C47Houston: What is your definition of a “Director”?

Mr. Harper: I think a ‘Director’ is a visionary. He or she is able to bring alive the words on a paper in a creative way and present the outcome or results to an audience. C47Houston: What is your style of filmmaking or do you even have one?

Mr. Harper: Well, I love long shots and one takes! I also love slow dolly in and dolly out shots. Saying that, I don’t thing I have a particular style right yet. I'm still working on my signature shot. Give me a

C47Houston: What is more important to you, the camera or the cinematographer?

Mr. Harper: I think that the cinematography is much important than the camera. Dozens of films has been made on any camera. But, without the cinematography what's the point of the camera C47Houston: Thank you Johnnard. One last question: Now that you have your first feature motion picture behind you, now that you have a bit of feature making experience and have learned a few things about making a feature movie, what kind of advice can you pass along to younger people or people looking to make their first movie? Mr. Harper: Thank you for considering me. I am a firm believer that you should never give up on what you believe in. You ought not be afraid to be different. Always make the film based on what you like to see. And, Invest, Invest and INVEST. Invest in yourself or no one else will. Be patient and try to work with as many different people as you can. It's not always about the director but it is certainly about the team and the team effort.

Friday/Saturday September 18th & 19th One of the biggest faults that Texas film-makers experience in trying to create a visual media is the lack of the business side of their particular industry. If you are serious about making movies and you are serious about making a living making movies, YOU MUST UNDERSTAND AND LEARN PROPER BUISNESS PRACTICES IN ORDER TO MAKE MONEY IN THIS COMPETITIVE FIELD. Without the knowing the business side of movie-making, all you are doing is spinning your wheels and getting no-where. (This includes adapting to the ever changing technology and thinking of new ways to create using that technology.) SWAMP, the Southwest Alternate Media Project, is presenting the 2015 Business of Film Conference, a 2-day event Friday and Saturday, September 18th and 19th all at the Rice Media Center, on the campus of Rice University. This 2-day event will feature panels, workshops and presentations that focus on the business side of making movies. Experienced and new movie-makers will learn from the professionals that have knowledge about business plans, finance, marketing, budgets, schedules, casting, production insurance, work-for-hire, pre-production and postproduction business and all kinds of other aspects of the industry. This year’s theme is “Building a Film Culture”. The objective is to provide practical training along with continuing the dialogue for a stronger film community. Film industry pioneer, Louis Black, co-founder of SXSW and the Austin Chronicle will be the Keynote speaker. Other speakers include film consultant Ashland Viscosi and Annie Bush who have experience in helping numerous Indie movie-makers build successful crowdfunding and audience building campaigns, as well as, knowledge about investors, producers, directors, crew and entertainment law. Of course, there are many more people to help you learn about the business side of movie making. It’s good for you...It’s good for Texas.
