Last week in C47Houston WEEKLY Issue 28, we talked about Austin Director James Christopher (originally from Houston) and awardwinning Twitchy Dolphin Flix productions company. They are currently in the pre-production and funding stages of their new feature motion picture “The Last Beautiful Girl”.

The team is happy to announce that they have surpassed their crowdfunding goals. On IndieGoGo.com, a crowdfunding campaign site they opened the campaign Wednesday, March 11th and, met their goals only a couple of days after publication.

According to Mr. Christopher they are scheduled to start production May 6th, 2015 and anticipate a March 2016 release. They will be in production for a couple of months and it will be straight to post.

Written by Mr. Christopher, the story follows a group of friends and the first time they truly fall in-and-out of “LOVE”. It is an honest look at the dynamics of love, friendship and honesty. The movie is filled with awkward humor and palpable drama. It is cute, funny, raunchy and a little heartwarming. The script, of the same title, is officially selected at the Barebones International Film & Music Festival and the International Independent Film Awards.

Casting includes Derek Babb, Terissa Kelton, Shelby Surdam, Vicky Illk, Janet Mayson, Allison Gregory, Andy Berteisen, Billy Kring, Elizabeth Kring, Brittany Flurry, Nick Loritsch, Reece Everett Ryan, Sydne Clark, Leslie Solcher, Stephanie Dunbar, Marc Wasserman and Mike Donis. Also, cast are newcomers Morgan Floyd, Dino Maglaris, Rachel Clark-Spear, Sean Keotting, Tracy Ely, Hannah Holub, Shelby Cullinan, Sacha Ryder, Alexandra Bates, Jason Garner, Sophie Tuckfield and more.

Behind the camera and shooting this movie is DP/Cinematographer Emily Heifner who will be making her feature film debut behind the camera.

Tuesday March 31st, 2015 Coming up Tuesday of next week, The Southwest Alternate Media Project’s (SWAMP) monthly SWAMP Salon. This month the “salon” will be giving filmmakers some insight into “Building a Film Culture in Houston”. The seminar starts at 6:30PM at Dean’s Downtown (316 Main St., Houston, Texas 77002) Tuesday, March 31st, 2015.

“Building a Film Culture in Houston” is about developing a community of individuals who not only make films, but seek to make films that will push the envelope, defy conventions and ultimately help us shape our ideas or what our world should be. Indie movies, art movies, documentaries and experimental movies all have a place in a culture driven by the love of MOVIES. At this “Salon” SWAMP will discuss what it going to take to build a local community of people that will support and promote the visual motion arts as a viable ART form.

Women in Film and Television (WIFT) and The Houston Art Alliance invite feature film makers to apply for the 2nd Houston Filmmaker Grant 2015, A $30,000 matching grant earmarked for the production of a narrative feature length commercial motion picture produced in Houston and by a local movie maker.

The Grant of $20,000 is made possible through the City of Houston’s Initiative Grant Program through the Houston Arts Alliance. Additional grants totally $10,000 will be provided by Houston First Corporation and The Houston Film Commission.

The project is managed by the Houston Arts Alliance in collaboration with WIFT-Houston, The Houston Film Commission and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. The Grant is the outcome of the film task force created by Houston Mayor Annise Parker in 2012 and co-chaired

by Franci Neely and Sharon Adams.

If you recall, the first Filmmakers Grant was awarded to Director Amir Valinia and Producer Theta Catalon for the production of their Sci-Fi feature motion picture “Flashes”, which had its premiere May 8th, 2014, last year at the AMC Studio 30-Dunvale Theater in Houston.

And, the Director’s cut was screened October 22nd, 2014 at the Alamo Drafthouse-Vintage Park in Houston. Houston Writer and Director Juan C Vazquez and eUgot Movies screened and Premiered their new crime feature motion picture “Murder Book” at the Alamo Drafthouse-Vintage Park (114 Vintage Park Blvd., Houston, TX 77070 / Hwy 249 and Louetta) Saturday, March 21st, 2015, last weekend.

The Red Carpet event brought in a theater full of movie fans there to see Mr. Vazquez’s second feature movie.

Written by Mr. Vazquez this crime thriller follows Detective Rich Rodriquez, a rouge cop who has seen better days, is on drugs and is being passed up for promotions by an ambitious partner. On his last leg and about to be fired Rodriquez learns two of his “girls” have been killed and he requests to be assigned to solve the toughest case of his career, the murder book serial killer case. In order to catch the killer, this rouge cop must change his personality, become involved in the competitive world of models and catch a killer before he strikes again.

In the movie we saw Heather Williams, Neal Kodinsky, Michael Montgomery II, Joel Ackerman, Jessica Honsinger, Troy Parker, Samantha Glover, Cara Cochran, Elizabeth Redpath, Danny Trevino, Mark Docherty, Karen Ann Pavlick, Amy Lee Creel, David Tran Nguyen, Tommy Poynte, just to name a few of the talented actors in front of the camera.

We talked to producer Efrain-Abran Gutierrez, Jr., prior to the screening and found that two major distribution companies are interested in moving this feature motion picture for pubic release.

This is Mr. Vazquez’s second feature venture, the first being his 2008 “Through the Valley” that starred Danny Trejo, Noel Gugliemi, Pablo Bracho, Monet Johnson, Samantha Esteban, Jason Konopisos. The new feature motion picture by Houston Director Juan Vazquez (pictured above), “Murder Book” is his second feature venture, the first being the 2008 feature movie “Through the Valley”.

C47Houston WEEKLY and C47Houston News & Entertainment Magazine enjoys finding out if movie makers are learning as they progress through their careers. Ordinarily, their first ventures are filled with experiences that may be good or bad, but the trick is to learn from the mistakes in making their future projects and learning NOT how to make the mistake again. Mistakes can be very costly and mistakes can make the difference between a shelved project and one that gets a very sweet distribution deal with some major distribution outlets.

We asked Writer and Director Juan Vazquez to give an insight into what he has learned in making “Murder Book”, his second feature projects as opposed to his first project “Through the Valley”. Here is what he had to say…

Writer and Director Juan C. Vazquez: “Well, I’ve learned that you have to have plan for the movie. You don’t just make a movie to make a movie. You always have to ask yourself...is your film a “passion piece” or a “commercial piece”?

I have learned the you have to stick to the script. You have to believe in it, you have to believe in what you wrote it and you have to believe in it to the point that you don’t change it up in the middle. Just stick to your plan.

And, I have learned that once the film is done, target distribution companies that have done well with similar films. The whole point of selling your movie to a bigger distribution company is to get their “machine” working for you.”

Advice from Writer and Director Juan C. Vazquez: “One of the best pieces of advice I can give to new filmmakers is simply brand your “style”. Juan C. Vazquez is brand of film making.

Also, find the “right” actors. Don’t short change the casting. One bad actor can throw the whole film off.

Be sure to pick the right Director of Photography. The wrong cinematic direction can throw the movie off.

And, lastly don’t forget the Audio. Post-production on my feature film “Murder Book” has taken longer because we shot the move “run and gun” style to finish on time, and on budget”.

You may recall that due to price increases, the Houston Film Industry Meetup Group was forced to seek a new venue for its monthly meetup.

The organizer of the meetup group, Norman Fitts, reports that they will no longer meet at the Fox & Hound in Southwest Houston but will meet at their new venue at Rudyard’s British Pub (2010 Waugh Dr., Houston, Texas 77006). The Houston Film Industry Meetup Group will meet upstairs at Rudyard’s starting Tuesday, April 14th, next month and every second Tuesday of every month starting at 7PM. The new venue has three separate parking lots that surround the property and street parking is also available BUT be weary of where you park as towing is notoriously a fault in this area of town.

The new comedy film by Director Etan Cohen, “Get Hard” is scheduled to open in Houston this Friday, March 27th.

Shot in and around New Orleans, Louisiana, a lot of Texas talent ventured to the our neighbors to the east to be in this movie. Among them our friend Jeff Caperton has a part in “Get Hard”. Jeff’s credits include “Moonlighting”, “Remington Steele”, “Mr. Belvedere”, “Who’s the Boss?”, “Pitch Perfect 2” and was executive producer on “Piranha Sharks” and “Extracurricular Activities”. He is busy on set and in-demand with up coming project like “When the Bourgh Breaks”, “Elvis & Nixon”, “Daddy’s Home” and “I Saw the Light”. He is doing very well for himself. As well, Heidi Freier Caperton is in this movie.

If you want a chance to see “Get Hard” with a group of people, C47Houston will be attending the screening of the movie at the Studio Movie Grill at CityCentre this Friday with Mr. Caperton and his wife Heidi (7PM screening). We will let you know what we think.

When Detective Salinas is called to a crime scene, she and her partner find two dead bodies, a room full of blood and torture devices, a “kill room” and they find a young woman clinging to life, dazed with a bullet wound to the shoulder, the only witness that can tell them what has happened. Among the horror, Detective Salinas must piece together the who, what, where and when’s.

Executive produced by John Benton, Melanie DeMayo and Millie Loredo casting includes Melissa Mars as Detective Salinas and Vannessa Vasquez as Forensic Psychologist Mila Sweeney. The Houston Film Commission, a division of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau and Executive Director and VP of the HFC, Rick Ferguson are pleased to present another season of the Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase and are calling on filmmakers to submit their projects to the 2015 season.

The Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase is a special screening event consisting of the BEST of Texas short movies and videos under 40-minutes in length and presented to industry professionals in the Hollywood film community. The submitted projects must have been produced in Texas or by a current Texas resident as a creative short. The project must have been completed within three years before the entry deadline of April 1st, 2015; the project can not have been submitted in a previous year; three projects per filmmaker, per year can be submitted and there is NO entry Fee. Selected filmmakers and their selected films will be flown from Houston to Los Angeles, California and provided with one evenings accommodation and transportation to and from the screening.

The premiere screening of the 2015 Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase will be held in Los Angles, California in the summer of 2015 at the Directors Guild of America Theater Complex (7920 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90046) and additional pubic screenings of the showcase films will be held around Texas throughout the year.

By presenting this showcase, the Houston Film Commission continues the commitment to the local and state film industry, while giving talented and enthusiastic Texas Filmmakers the opportunity of a lifetime!

Last year, 2014, 6 selected projects screened including 3 from the Houston area that included Brandon Ray and Pat Kondelis’ “Anything Made of Paper”, Zack Jankovic’s “The Astronaut’s Secret” and Travis Johns’ “The Trouble with Ray” and 3 from the Austin area. 3 from the Austin area included Kat Candler’s “Black Metal”, Todd Rohal’s “Rat Pack Rat” and Annie Silverstein’s “”Skunk”.

The Organizer and Founder of the Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival (GCFVF), Mr. Hal Wixon is accepting projects, sponsors and volunteers for their 17th Annual GCFVF, 2015 season.

Screenings will place at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel (18100 Saturn Ln. Houston, TX 77058) both Friday and Saturday September 25th and 26th. And, the Saturday Night “Live” Cascade Awards Presentation will be held at The Sundance Grill II (800 Mariners Dr., Kemah, TX 77565 ) Saturday, September 26th, 2015, later this year.

This year the GCFVF is pleased to announce that Houston Actor and Producer Lew Temple is scheduled to be the honored guest and is accepting the 2015 GCFVF’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr. Temple is a dynamic actor and has close to a 100 credits to his name that includes a recurring part on “The Walking Dead”, “Walker, Texas Ranger”, “The Preacher’s Daughter”, “Lap Dance”, “The Rolling Road”, “The Lone Ranger”, “Hawaii Five-0” among a huge list. After a week of filmmaking, 16 teams of science fiction movie makers turned in their short sci-fi projects for Houston’s first science fiction” film race and film festival, called “The Zone”. Kickoff started Friday, March 13th at Dean’s Downtown and ended Friday, March 20th, last week. All the completed short movies will be seen by independent judges. Screenings of all completed projects will be presented in April of 2015 (TBA) and an encore screening will take place May 22nd through May 25th, 2015 in conjunction with Comicpalooza and at the George R. Music promoter and Producer Chris Harkness of MM55Productions announces that his client Houston Singer/Songwriter Dustin Prinz will have a couple of his songs in two different episodes of the popular PBS series “Roadtrip Nation”.

Original compositions from his latest CD/Album entitled “Eleven”, Dustin Prinz has optioned the songs “Blindfolded” and “I’m Still Alive” to be used in the PBS series. “Blindfolded” will be included in the episode titled “The Road To Tech” that follows 3 young aspiring teachers as they travel coast to coast, interviewing educators who are changing the face of education and reshaping the world as we know it. That episode aired last Wednesday, March 18th on the Pivot Channel.

Mr. Prinz’s second song “I’m Still Alive” will be included in the Roadtrip Nation episode titled “Why Not Us”, an hour long special about 4 first generation college students traveling across the country and having conversations with other successful first generation college goers including Randall L. Stephenson, CEO of AT&T, Howard Schultz CEO of Starbucks, Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan and Singer/ Songwriter John Legend. This episode is scheduled to air and premiere April 29th, next month on KQED in San Francisco.
