Council Update Issue 2 2021
Mayor’s message
Cr John Faker, Mayor of Burwood Council It’s been a very busy start to the year with community consultations being held for a number of significant projects including a new Urban Park and Cultural Centre for Burwood, the naming of a new retail and dining precinct, and consultations to address youth issues. I was proud to celebrate International Women’s Day with great women in key leadership roles at Burwood Council, including Councillors representing our local residents’ needs and wants, and Council staff who work tirelessly for the community. The Capital Works program continues at pace with the redevelopment of the much loved Enfield Aquatic Centre well underway, work to expand the sporting precinct at Grant Park kicking off and beautification works rolled out to enhance our retail precincts. On top of this, Council meetings are back in full swing with a number of significant resolutions enacted, including a new Mayoral Business Commendation Awards
program, protection of our Heritage Conservation Areas, and a review of Private Certifier planning consent compliance. As always our busy program of activities and events continues, from Library workshops and author talks, supervisor learner driver courses to English conversation classes – there is something for everyone. I’d encourage you to visit our website to find out what’s on offer. There’s lots of ways you can find out what’s happening in our local area. New flags celebrate Burwood’s heritage New street flags in the shopping precincts celebrate Burwood’s rich history. Three designs feature in the series ‘Burwood Throughout Time’ including one celebrating the First Nations People of the Burwood Local Government area. The design, by Indigenous artist Noni Cragg depicts the relationship the Wangal People have with the river system. The water motif, represents the Parramatta River food sources such as yams and eels. Yams are identified by their beautiful yellow flowers, the Murnong Daisy. These flank the large motif depicting the river. Eels, another source of food are shown in the design on top of the river motif. Other flag designs by Christina Huynh and Alicia McFadzean.
