These chickens have

no reason to cross the road

“Y

OU normally see someone walking their dog!” is the common response from people who haven’t seen Camberwell resident Leah out walking her chooks before. The unusual scene doesn’t draw comment from the locals, who have become used to seeing their neighbour going for a stroll up and down their leafy street with a chicken tucked comfortably under each arm.

Leah first started keeping chickens in 2011, and currently has three of the birds. The oldest chook, Leanne, is a white Leghorn that she bought in 2012. The other two are Isa Browns, one named Isa and the other Iris.

Whilst the birds do get out for the occasional wander in the street, they are usually found roaming freely about the backyard, scratching and pecking through the garden and digging holes along the fence line, which Leah’s husband Alan routinely fills up to prevent a “great escape”.

I’m not sure why the three would even contemplate a breakout when they have an owner like Leah, who freely admits that she spoils them, driving to Coldstream every three months to purchase their favourite food, a layer mash they have been having since they were born. She also feeds them food scraps, including meat (but not chicken of course!) and washes and dries their eggshells, pounding them in a mortar and pestle before adding them in to the layer mash.

Husband Alan recalls a time when Leah was away and he ran out of the layer mash for the chooks. He went to the nearest agriculture supply shop and bought a bag of pellets to feed them. For days he tried to give them the new food, but when he put it out the chickens would just look at it and then walk away.

He went back to the store and got a different bag of feed, but the result was the same. He eventually gave in to the birds’ stronger will and made the trip to Coldstream.

Leah, Alan and adult son Alistair say the chickens definitely have different personalities, with Isa being the hardest to catch and the youngest one, Iris, often being bullied by the other two

– an example of the pecking order in action. Iris likes to console herself by having cuddles with Leah when the others aren’t playing nice.

All the chickens like to have a cuddle with Leah while she sits on the couch watching TV. They also enjoy music, Leah holding them while Alistair plays the piano.

The chickens reward the family with a good supply of fresh eggs, with them currently getting about 10 a week, and when all three are laying they have had as many as 79 eggs in one month.

Leah keeps a daily diary of the chickens’ activities, recording the number of eggs each lays and noting any milestones. Alistair transfers this information to a spreadsheet so it can be easily reviewed.

At night the three are kept in a chicken coop which is scrubbed every Saturday, then filled with clean newspaper, straw and sawdust. Leah says this is important not only for the chooks, but also out of respect for the neighbours, who shouldn’t have to put up with any odours or vermin.

The manure from the chickens is watered and then spread around the garden, and the stunning roses in front of the house are proof of just how effective this natural fertiliser is.

The family doesn’t have any other pets, so Leah feels it is not too onerous to keep up the level of attention she gives her beloved chooks.

Despite adoring her pets, Leah says her chook ownership has not put her off eating chicken, but of course she buys it from the shops and wouldn’t dream of sacrificing one of her birds for the dinner table.

UNG Gar, the namesake of the club is a southern form of kung fu. When the club performs at schools, Hayden Lim-Joon, who is a long-term club member, runs the performances. He joined the club in his early teens and has been with us for over a decade.

Hayden says there is one question that invariably comes up. "It delights children when we ask them if they have seen the film Kung Fu Panda, and the question that always follows is ‘Are your martial arts sets based on Po the Panda?’ It makes me chuckle, but we do not have forms based on Po. We do have forms based on two of the other animals who are in the Furious Five – Tiger and Crane."

One of the more highly sought-after classes is Lion Dance, where students hone their skills in this traditional form of celebration. A team of two will don a lion costume and perform the dance that brings good luck to celebrations like shop openings, market festivals, weddings, birthdays, and the annual Lunar New Year celebrations. Our lion does not look like the one you see in a zoo, as lions were not native to China when the lion dance first began. The original lion dancers made what they thought resembled a lion from the mythical tales their elders told. Those you see today are still made out of the same materials used by their ancestors – bamboo, pâpier maché, cloth and paint.

The lion dance sounds – of drums, cymbals, gong and firecrackers – make heads turn wherever the group goes.

Melinda Chan, who is the wife of one of the founding members of the club and mother to three sons, one of whom is Ashley (pictured with the pole), participates in the classes and has performed for the club longer than

she'll admit to me (even though we are family!).

Melinda says the lion dance has led to new ventures in performance activities for HGYS. "The Junior Lion Dance performances at Crown Casino began as a way to keep the younger members active while the adults performed on the casino floor. The performance received so much positive feedback that Crown booked it as additional performances for their Lunar New Year celebrations. We have trouble keeping the crowd back at some performances! It is a great highlight for the younger members – an enjoyable experience they can share with everyone."

To be part of the Spirit of the Lion Drum Team, the drummers train up to four times a week, honing their musical skills with chief instructor Wyman Young and his sons, Kensie and Lachlan. The Young family travel regularly interstate, and to Japan, America, Malaysia to increase their knowledge of Japanese and Chinese drumming around the world.

The 2016 Lunar New Year falls on 8 February – a very auspicious day, as the number 8 is very lucky in Asian culture. Preparation is currently under way for the key members of HGYS, as the club will be performing on the Crown Casino main stage for their Lunar New Year celebrations, and also at various festivals and restaurants.

enjoying what they feel passionate about – fun, family, friends and culture – so we hope to see you during the Lunar New Year!

The Hung Gar Yau Shu Martial Arts School, which is almost thirty years old, teaches the love of Chinese culture through Hung Gar Kung Fu, judo, Southern Chinese Lion Dance and Chinese Drumming. The club is communityfocused with a family-friendly atmosphere. Many of its longest serving members were born into the club.

Led by Wyman, the club offers a beginners class every Sunday morning to give a taste of its entire curriculum, as well as specialised classes for the highly enthusiastic members. These classes encourage people of all ages to participate, and the first class for all new members is free. The classes begin with judo – the sound of members slapping the mats as they roll can be heard as you approach the Nunawading clubhouse!

WBC’s broadcast from the Whitehorse Spring Festival on Sunday 18 October was its most successful to date. Festival-goers constantly stopped by to enquire about the station and become members.

Between 12noon and 4pm, representatives from organisations including Scouts, Historical Societies, Surrey Park Model Boat Club, Whitehorse Film Society, Whitehorse Council Services, St John’s Ambulance and Country Women’s Association were interviewed.

Volunteers at our Information Desk handed out 3WBC history brochures, car stickers, pens and our newsletter, “Back Chat”.

MY LONELY TEENAGER

Asperger’s dilemmas from a mum’s perspective by "Sue"

I

have a teenage son with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD. I am not sure that I really need to put his official diagnoses down, because Justin is simply who he is and I just want him to be happy and live a productive life to his fullest potential, as I wish for my other son.

I believe my son to be a lovely boy with some amazing special qualities that I wish both he and others could appreciate. School has generally been a pretty trying experience for Justin and the family. Many years of being left out, of being bullied, of constantly being alienated without knowing why. Yes, Justin is a bit different and has particular interests, but that doesn’t mean he deserves some of the treatment that he has faced from other students and even some of the teachers. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see your child being targeted for bullying and not coping in the mainstream school community – and then, even worse, not knowing how to really help.

Searching high and low for the “right” high school is yet another nerve-racking experience, but definitely worth the hassle when you finally do find the supportive environment that truly does make a positive difference. Do not despair, they are out there.

Let’s note some of the other little concerns that, as a Mum, I'm sure I am not alone with.

• Will he ever make substantial friendships?

• Will he ever be independent enough to look after himself?

• Although he is supposed to be extremely intelligent, will he manage his schooling?

• Will he ever fit into society and be able to hold down a job?

• Will he ever have any interest other than his computer?

Okay, I am getting carried away, but these are some of the constant concerns that play on my mind.

At this adolescent stage, my main wish is for Justin to make some friends, cope with his schooling, find some independence and feel good about himself. Justin thinks he would be happy to stay home and sit at his computer 24/7; however, even he has admitted at times that he is actually quite lonely and does wish to have some friends.

I had searched wide and far for some affordable teenage social skills program, where Justin might fit in and develop friendships and bonds with others of similar age and possible similar interests. Nothing, nothing, nothing.

We moved to Ashwood a couple of years ago and the local high school that Justin attends referred us to the Power Neighbourhood House in Ashwood, where – lo and behold – a teenage social group, Connecting Teens, runs fortnightly. It

seemed to be tailored exactly to his (and our) needs.

My son has now been attending Connecting Teens for nearly three years. He comes home a happy boy after time with the group. He tells us that this is somewhere he can be himself, without the need to withdraw into himself or to “explain” himself. His self-esteem has improved immensely and his attitude towards attending school has greatly improved.

Connecting Teens provides a safe, supportive environment for him to experience real acceptance, no criticism or shunning. In addition, the various trips he makes with the group (such as to movies, bowling or football) are wonderful steps towards achieving real-life independence and community involvement. The in-house activities mean he plays games with others in the group and learns to share, accept wins and losses, work as a team and celebrate individual achievements. Simple things like celebrating a birthday mean a great deal for kids who have been invited to few birthday parties in their lives. As parents, we know he is in a safe, accepting environment and he will not be ostracised, excluded or subtly ridiculed. Nor will he be paraded as a feel-good example of disability advocacy.

The Boroondara Recycling and Waste Centre will be closed and waste will not be collected on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The scheduled Christmas Day collection will take place on Saturday 26 December.

Similarly, the New Year’s Day collection will take place on Saturday 2 January. Collections will return to normal on Monday 4 January 2016.

Anna's fine obsession G

ROWING up in Ashwood, Anna Burke has always been involved within her community.

Influenced and instilled with strong values and beliefs by her family, her teachers and her community involvements, and with role models such as the late Joan Child, Anna’s own passion and determination would lead her to enter into the realm of politics.

In 1988, the International Year of Peace, Anna’s desire for social justice, progressive change and world peace saw her attend a conference with the aim of sending a communiqué to the United Nations. Although the conference ended in a clash due to Vietnamese politics at the time, Anna left with a greater want for sustainable change. Joining the Labor party in the same year, her intentions were set on being more actively involved within her own community and on helping to initiate change, rather than standing by the wayside.

Ten years later the seat of Chisholm had no candidate from the Labor party, and Anna was approached to run in what seemed to be a blue ribbon electorate. Through a twist of fate the sitting member moved to a different electorate and Anna was successful in the election.

For over 17 years now Anna has been in the thick of it in her electorate, with concerns ranging from live trade, asylum seekers, protecting local businesses and employment, and affordable education to the everyday needs of an ever changing demographic. Being an active, approachable and interactive representative has given her an in-depth and extensive knowledge of Chisholm and the surrounding areas. Anna also recognises the importance of local media such as the Burwood Bulletin, especially still in the printed form, as it provides a “voice for the community” and an opportunity to “connect into it and have a say”.

ACTION! E STABLISHED in 1958, the Whitehorse Film Society (WHFS) is a local group which encourages an interest in films as an entertainment, educational and information medium, all at an affordable price.

We screen a wide variety of quality films – those that entertain (including recent commercial releases), those with "heart", those that raise social issues and those from many countries around the world.

Our 2016 program comprises 20 films, including three Australian and seven foreign-language films – all screening in the Willis Room of the Whitehorse Civic Centre, 379 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading, allowing good quality presentation with full surround sound.

Members enjoy supper after each screening, where lively discussion ensues about the viewed film. WHFS Membership includes borrowing screened DVDs at no extra cost. Members also have a say in which movies they wish to watch the following year. All this is available for a yearly fee of $55 ($50 concession).

A highlight of the 2016 season will be on 16 July when the 1000th film shown will be another Australian production, the light-hearted family movie Paper Planes.

One of the foreign screenings later in the year is to be the Israeli caper movie Hunting Elephants, in which a 12-yearold boy leads a gang of senior citizens who decide to rob a bank!

The WHFS will begin its 2016 season on Saturday, 6 February, with a screening of the Australian film Last Cab to Darwin, featuring Michael Caton and Jacki Weaver.

UCH is its reputation, the Box Hill Art Group is the first community painting group ever to be granted access to the Government House precinct since it was completed in 1876.

“While we have regular ‘paint outs’ for our members at various locations around Melbourne, we never expected that we’d be painting landscapes in the grounds of Government House”, said committee member Colin Stephen.

The Box Hill Art Group has been a haven for local artists since 1952, and has held annual exhibitions of its members᾿ work.

“The theme of this year’s exhibition was the commemoration of World War 1 and was awash with seascapes, landscapes and life drawings depicting the era, as well as many other subjects”, said Colin.

The annual exhibitions attract people from all over Melbourne and beyond to enjoy and purchase some of the most breathtaking – yet affordable – art on the market today.

In its 63 year history, people of all ages have come together at the Box Hill Art Group to express themselves creatively, colouring their communities with spectacular art.

While a number have sought to learn the art of painting, experienced artists have wanted to paint with their peers as they swap ideas on techniques, mediums and painting locations. Some prefer to work with watercolours; others choose to create with oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoals or a mix media. But what is common to all is the excitement of exhibiting their collective art in public forums.

The Box Hill Art Group is always looking for new members, and with three regular classes each week there are suitable times for most people. What’s more, it’s a very affordable and enjoyable pursuit.

WHS Family Day success

ERFECT weather set the scene for the Whitehorse Historical Society's Family Day at Schwerkolt Cottage on Sunday, 13 September. Families and visitors began arriving before the 11am start, but were happy to wander round in the sun while the animal farm, the magic man and face painter Fairy Susie set up their stalls.

The Lacemakers, the Spinners and Weavers and the Chinese painter began their amazing work, and visitors were able to watch the meccano and model train and displays being assembled and the models start whirring and trains rattling.

Outside, the blacksmith and the woodturners were in action, demonstrating their skills and gathering admiring onlookers. On the food front, Forest Hill Rotary’s sausages were sizzling and Blackburn Red Cross served tea and coffee with Anzac biscuits and pound cake.

The Victorian Folk Music Players roamed the area singing bush ballads, whilst Choir Victoria entertained with WWI songs.

Children galloped from the Gumboot Throw to the Cottage gardens for the old-fashioned races. Lots of dropped eggs!

As usual, all the helpers did a wonderful job; particularly the parking attendants, who were under pressure to organise the largest number of cars yet.

T is time to cheer, celebrate and congratulate as Camberwell South Primary School (CSPS) completes 90 years at Glen Iris. The school was opened on 20 September 1925 by the Hon. A. J. Peacock, Minister of Public Instruction. Since then, the school has been steadily progressing, achieving and serving the community. Today the school has about 520 students enrolled from Prep to Grade 6, and about 40 staff members. The campus is quite spacious, with a well-equipped playground spread over a vast area in a quiet neighbourhood.

A memorable anniversary indeed, since this year the school is listed among the 40 most innovative schools in Australia! The list of innovative schools across the country has been published in The Educator magazine and the schools were selected for their cutting edge pedagogy and technology. Seven Victorian government schools – five secondary and two primary schools – were awarded.

CSPS is proud to be one of the only two Victorian primary schools to win the innovative school award.

The school has a system in place where the students are continuously assessed, and this really helps the teachers to monitor the child’s progress and to set tasks accordingly.

Also, they have a staff coordinator who helps to support and coach the teachers when required. The school greatly encourages learning through technology and all the children carry an iPad to class. Much to the delight of the students, this year the school has two new additions – an aquarium and a chicken coop. The chicken coop aids the students in Years 3 and 4 in their entrepreneurial education program.

The anniversary was celebrated on 20 November and was commemorated by the official opening of the history trail capturing the changes over 90 years. There was a

special school assembly with performances by the school choir and concert band, and the school buildings are now named after some of the notable alumni: Charles Goode Building, Barry Humphries Hall and Dorothy Laver Building. There were guided tours of the history trail and viewings of the historical display. The unfurling of the new CSPS flag concluded the ceremony.

A good education in a pleasant and safe environment is all a child needs as they take their first steps towards learning. And it all begins in a primary school, where the child explores the world outside home through study and play. The national recognition as an innovative school is certainly a matter of pride for the management, staff, students and parents of CSPS, and also for a neighbourhood whose residents are fortunate to have an achieving school within its proximity.

Local community organisation, Camcare, is planning a 'Love Bites' program for high school students (aged 15–17 years).

The program aims to help young people build “respectful relationships”. It covers issues such as gender stereotypes, domestic and family violence, sexual assault and peer support. CASH group chairman, Juliann Byron, and Ashburton Community Bank® Branch manager, Maggie, were only too happy to help with this important program.

E

VERYONE'S mental health is different. Some people struggle to be mentally healthy more than others. Your mental health doesn’t always stay the same. It can change as circumstances change and as you move through different stages of your life. If you are in good mental health you are able to strive towards your full potential, cope with life and play a part in your family, friends, workplace or school and community.

In today’s society, a lot of pressure is placed on teenagers by others and from themselves. So much is expected of them; instead of trying their best and valuing the learning, a simple mark at school has become more important. This pressure only adds to the stress of school and of life.

Stress and Anxiety can be triggered by a number of things such as the business of school, preparing for a test or exam, taking on a lot of responsibility, insecurity about yourself, poor environment (e.g. lots of noise), feeling overloaded with schoolwork or relationship issues. These are all common triggers students can experience during adolescence.

It is important that we do everything we can to manage positive mental health even when life is busy and stressful. A few tips for positive mental health for teenagers are: 1. Connect with others. Develop and maintain relationships with people who you trust and who support you.

2. Take time to enjoy. Set time aside for activities you enjoy.

This may be reading a book, playing sport or talking to friends.

3. Participate and share interests. Join a club or connect with a group of people who share similar interests with you.

4. Contribute to your community. Volunteer your time for a cause or issue that you care about. Help out a neighbour, work in a community garden or do something for a friend.

5. Take care of yourself. Maintain a healthy body – eat well, be active and rest.

6. Challenge yourself. Learn a new skill or take on a challenge to meet a goal.

7. Deal with stress. Be aware of what triggers your stress and how you react. You may be able to avoid some of the triggers and learn to prepare for or manage others. Stress is a part of life and affects people in different ways. It only becomes a problem when it makes you feel uncomfortable or distressed.

A balanced lifestyle can help you manage stress better.

8. Rest and refresh. Get plenty of sleep. Go to bed at a regular time each day and practise good habits to get better sleep.

9. Notice the here and now. Simply live in the moment each day and don't worry too much about challenges you may face ahead.

10. Ask for help. If you are seeking help, ask a friend, someone you trust or a GP for advice.

The most important tip is that whatever happens, try to stay positive and share this positivity amongst others!

TART on the city side of the station, noting the little old weatherboard station building with its open-fire chimney on the opposite platform.

Walk south between the shops and the railway along the Anniversary/Outer Circle Rail Trail; this track is very popular with cyclists too. As the path narrows you walk through a grove of both younger and older oaks, with lots of acorns beside the track. As you can see, this section of the old railway is still in use. After ten minutes, you cross over the curiously named “Dion Rail Link”, passing Summerhill Park on your right. Near Ashburton Station, after the tennis courts, take a right turn along Aitchison Avenue, then walk along either arm of the aptly named Y Street. Just before you reach High Street there is a laneway behind the shops on the right, which leads to a public toilet in the car park.

UR first walk this year featured the old Outer Circle Railway, going north from Burwood Railway Station. This walk, our eleventh, goes south from Burwood Station all the way to Hughesdale, where that line joined the Dandenong line. The walk as described is about 8 kilometres, but you can shorten it easily by starting at either Ashburton (saving 1.5km) or Alamein (2.5km) stations.

Burwood Station is five minutes from Toorak Road tram stop 53 (Melway 60 D6), walking south along Lithgow Street, then right at the roundabout.

Anniversary Trail Return to the rail trail (left at High Street), continuing south. You will notice that the oaks are now replaced by plantings of mostly native trees. At Laurel Street there is an informal track running parallel to the rail trail, but giving a better view of Alamein Station. After that station, return to the trail, which really feels like an old railway embankment (because it is!). The signboard gives great historical information about Alamein, and this is a good rest spot. You cannot miss some of the infrastructure still in place. Keep an eye out too for the pink and yellow rocks, which are common in this area and over 400 million years old.

Twenty minutes from Alamein Station, you reach the end of the Anniversary Trail. Imagine the huge, wooden trestle bridge that once took trains across the valley ahead. Continue across the road, and gradually downhill along Gardiners Creek Trail, crossing Gardiners Creek, going south through the golf course and over the freeway and the railway line. Take care to stay on this route – there are several intersecting trails! Above East Malvern Station (where there are toilets), take the left (east) ramp down to the car park. At the bottom of this ramp, turn right and then left along a grassy strip just before leaving the car park. Walk past the block of units, then along the marked path beside an old tin shed and a humming power substation. Cross Waverley Road at the traffic lights and enter the bushy Urban Forest, and back to the old railway reservation, as referred to in the information panel, and brochures. There are various trails heading south through this linear park, a highlight of this walk. Look for native birds, nesting boxes and wildflowers.

As you approach busy Dandenong Road, you will see the “forest” continuing behind a post-and-rail fence.

(There are traffic lights 100 metres to the west.) This last section of the trail has a well-defined concrete path, and the park becomes grassier as it proceeds past picnic facilities. Walk to the left of the playground to the next (much easier) crossing of Neerim Road, after which you will begin to hear the sounds of real trains, and to marvel at the huge eucalypts in Boyd Park. Not long after the mosaic pavement, you can exit onto a short street leading to Hughesdale shops, and to a public toilet in Euston Road.

The return to Burwood is quite easy – bus 767 (the stop on the western side of Poath Road) goes to the Burwood Highway tram at Station Street on its way to Box Hill. Check the timetable, and you may have time for a well-deserved cool drink.

HE Friends of Gardiners Creek Valley assembled for their usual meeting at the Ashburton Library on 5 November 2015. A buzz of eager expectancy was in the air, for there was a closely (and successfully) guarded secret!

Kay Johnston and Trevor Phillips were to be presented with two Best Friends awards – as well as with two Golden Trowels.

After a welcome address by Mayor of Boroondara, Cr Coral Ross, tributes to the two long-serving members were read out by artist Jo Reitze and George Fernando FOGCV and the Best Friends awards presented by Victorian Environment Friends Network convenor Ray Radford.

The presentation to Kay and Trevor of the Golden Trowels was made to the still unsuspecting duo by Burwood’s State MP Graham Watt.

The meeting of the obviously close-knit group concluded with a convivial afternoon tea.

Branching out

I

was becoming a rather pathetic person, looking back with longing at what was something I was trying to bring back into my life and not being able to reconcile the fact that I have a wonderful situation; it is called ‘LIFE NOW’!

In my 55 years in Australia I’ve had more than twenty trips back to UK to see family and friends. To climb out of this silly nostalgic state of mind: “count your blessings”.

I made a list of all the incredibly wonderful things and people I have: my daughter, granddaughters, good friends, and stepchildren.

My parents and nearly all my old friends had died but I still craved my “old scene”.

Before I wrote down all these

thoughts I felt as though I was standing on a sandy beach at the edge of the tide and as the water receded it was taking me with it! I had to step back and let the tide go and it took with it any negative feelings I had! From

now on I am determined to explore every avenue of life here and now and be very grateful for it! There are many wonderful places here in Victoria alone. So into another stage of my life and I shall make the very best of all there is to offer.

There is a bonus – I can switch on my TV and watch the beautiful English countryside with its country lanes, thatched cottages and country pubs – to say nothing of the graceful ancestral homes that are centuries old! I can see all this without packing my suitcase, going through airport security systems and the jet lag involved!

Surely I can have the best of both worlds?

HE Burwood Uniting Church is again staging a Follow the Star display showcasing the original Christmas Story and including a Christmas Tree Forest with trees decorated by local kindergartens, schools and other organisations.

The display will be open from 5 to 12 December at the following times: Monday to Wednesday 1– 4pm; Thursday and Friday 1– 5pm; Saturday 10am– 2pm; and for groups by appointment.

The Opening Celebration will be held on Saturday, 5 December, from 10am to 1pm. This year it will again feature Christmas

music by the Hawthorn Band and stalls raising money for the Christmas Bowl Appeal.

A Gift Tree collecting toys for needy families was established last year. At the request of Camcare, who distributed the toys, this year canned fruit will be collected under the Gift Tree to be part of their Christmas Hampers.

All are invited to see the display and attend the Opening Celebration at Burwood Uniting Church on the corner of Warrigal Road and Hyslop Street, Glen Iris.

happy birthday Jean Hadler

B

ORN in 1925, Jean Hadler (née Christensen) grew up in East Camberwell. Obviously Burwood was the place to be though, because Jean met her future husband, Rupert, at the “Younger Set” dances at the Burwood RSL. After marrying, she and Rupert moved to Wippa Court, Ashwood, where their three children – Estelle, Lynda and Robert – were raised. As Rupert worked away on dredges in Port Phillip Bay, the child rearing was left to Jean.

Jean loved to sing and joined the local choir at St Matthew's Anglican Church – the pinnacle of her singing days was to perform in Melbourne’s Hamer Hall. Jean also played an active role in many other areas of church life. “Mum was especially involved with the Mothers’ Union, where she held every position during her time there”, says eldest daughter, Estelle. “Mum’s apple cakes always did well at the church fete; everyone loves Mum᾿s apple cakes!”

Times were tough when the children were young, so to make ends meet Jean worked part-time at Streets Ice Cream in Holmesglen. However, wanting to better herself, she attended night school, achieved good results and found employment at the RACV – where she was in the right place to get her licence and her first car. “What

a joy that was for her”, says Estelle. “She had the freedom to explore country places with her brother George. They were very close.”

Following her retirement, Jean filled her days with square dancing, bowling, Melbourne Eastern Orchid Club and, of course, at age 69, becoming a volunteer with the Burwood Bulletin, where she still holds the record for writing the most profiles – 65 – about local advertisers, from issue #058 (Spring 1996) to issue #128 (Autumn 2014); Jean also wrote many articles about the area’s early days.

Amazingly, Jean was still delivering the magazine in the Ashburton area until issue #135 (Summer 2014–15).

Well done, Jean, and very many thanks on behalf of the Burwood Bulletin for your tireless support. Jean told me once that many times she’d be asked to do yet another profile for an issue and – to her credit – she always made time for it.

The extended family had a wonderful day together to celebrate Jean’s birthday on 19 October. Proud Estelle says, “Mum is currently tackling learning to use an iPad. She has always been up for a challenge”.

wore a long blue taffeta evening frock and Pauline wore a long white frock with red flowers. We both had flowers in our hair: azaleas from our home gardens. This was the fashion at that time. Silver or gold shoes were worn for dancing and the men wore black patent leather shoes called dancing pumps. The dress for men would be, best suit, shirt with collar and tie.

50-50 dances were held Friday and Saturday nights.

Friday night was a more informal night, the ladies wearing a short dress or dirndl skirts with pretty top and the men in slacks and shirt. Saturday night was dress up night – the same dance, long dresses, flowers and the men in suits with collar and tie.

Admission fee Friday and Saturday night was sixpence. Supper was a time to look forward to. Friday was tea, coffee and biscuits. Saturday night – scones, cream sponges and cakes with the cream oozing, made by local ladies who also attended the dances!

The band consisted of pianist Henry Galagher and two drummers. One became a top drummer in Australia. His name – Lindsay Copeland. Singers entertained us at supper time with country and western style singing. Their names were Tex and Lucky. Lucky became well known in the music world as Lucky Grules.

Jim Hadler was the Master of Ceremonies (M.C.). He and his wife Margaret (known as Rita) also helped, with several other couples, to teach the younger people the steps of the dances.

Some of the dances were Charmaine, Parma Waltz, Tangoette, Evening Two Step, Military Two Step, The Modern Waltz, Pride of Erin, the Dorothea, the Rumbaette, and the Fox Trot. The highlights of the evening were the Alberts and Lancers. The Alberts were danced in sets of four couples, which involved the joining of hands, in lines facing each other dancing

towards one another and then much swinging on the corners, sometimes until the girls were swung completely off their feet with a great deal of squealing and laughter.

It was not unusual for a friend to take me to the dance by dinking me on the crossbar of his bike, from Camberwell along Toorak Road, to Burwood: not a car on the road and rarely a tram to be seen – all this with the long evening frock and flowers in the hair, held in place with a soft scarf or piece of tulle.

The “Younger Set” was formed at this time where we all enjoyed some fun evenings and picnics. This was a “Come as you are invited” evening and some came straight from work. Above in the front row are seen Denzil Gribble and Roy Rogers in their painters’ clothes.

Richard Daly speaks to Tom Thorpe

ALVERN-BORN Tom Thorpe OAM and his wife Dorothy moved to the house they built in Burwood in 1953. Still resident at the same address after raising three daughters and a son, Tom has devoted more than sixty years to fulfilling his philosophy of helping people and being involved in the community through a wide range of activities, predominantly as a volunteer. Tom was a toolmaker and engineer but chose in later years of his working life to combine these skills with management; first as a production manager and then as managing director of sheltered workshops.

Back in 1953, the lack of minor roads, footpaths or sewerage provided challenges for early residents. The Presbyterian Ladies’ College owned their current land but the only building was an old house used as a primary school.

Cattle grazed on the PLC land and on farms on the east side of Gardiners Creek, and looking east one could see Station Street, Middleborough Road and the RSPCA facility at East Burwood with few houses in between.

Tom saw the construction of Bennettswood Primary and Burwood High schools and the opening of Australia’s first drive-in theatre in February 1954. In those days Dorothy shopped at the then thriving shopping centre at Wattle Park, which included a grocer’s shop, two butchers, two chemists, doctors’ surgeries, a hardware shop and a greengrocer.

Shopping trips were challenging, pushing a pram along Elgar Road with no footpaths.

Becoming involved in local community affairs by setting up a local residents’ association was the start of a distinguished record of community service that continues today – with terms over a period of 13 years as Secretary of Burwood Primary and President of the Burwood High School committees, a City of Box Hill councillor for nearly 20 years and mayor in 1978–1979, 1989–1990 and 1992–1993. He was a key player in the development of Whitehorse’s “sister city” relationship with the city of Matsudo in Japan. Tom is still involved with the Committee and is an Honorary Citizen of Matsudo.

Living close to Gardiners Creek, and through his role as a councillor, Tom made a significant contribution to the creation of walking/cycling tracks, planting and other

enhancements of the creek surrounds particularly between Station Street and Highbury Road. Acknowledgement of part of his commitment to this project is recorded on a plaque opposite the old drive-in site.

As Chairman and through his long-term involvement with the Wattle Park Heritage Group, Tom has seen the installation of plaques acknowledging the significance of the “Lone Pine Tree”. He’s been Master of Ceremonies at Wattle Park’s Anzac Day Service since 2005.

After 39 years Tom still serves as a Justice of the Peace, and well remembers his days on the bench at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court when initially he was required to sit with an experienced magistrate. One case involved a young man who took someone’s bike for a joyride before returning it. After hearing the evidence, which included the lad’s life challenges, Tom suggested to the magistrate that funds from the Court’s poor box could be used to buy him a bicycle. This led to the courtroom being cleared and the magistrate suggesting to Tom that he should decide whether he wanted to be a Justice of Peace or a social worker.

Whilst Tom decided on the former and sat on the bench for a number of years, this anecdote clearly demonstrates his commitment to helping others and particularly in supporting young people. President of Scouts Australia Whitehorse District for a number of years, he proudly says, “Over the last two years scouting in Whitehorse has grown, especially in the 11–14 years age group.” (continued on page 53)

salary. The psychological effect of ‘busting up᾿ that money as you please, even though it’s only a few shillings, counteracts the feeling that one must be‘careful᾿ with the pennies.

“Well, there it is. We’ve found it works and, having a budget bank account, it saves us any worries over bills.”

In 1950, the average male wage was £433/1/4 and the average female wage was £162/10/6!1 Ashburton Housewife’s letter to The Argus is like a time capsule: one senses what life was like following the Second World War for young-marrieds with a whole new future ahead of them; a time when nightly entertainment was listening to the radio.

I wonder if anyone can identify ‘Ashburton Housewife’, whose article generated offerings from other suburbs.

The original building grew bit by bit with various additions as funding became available. More recently a remodelled Neighbourhood House section and purpose-built Inner East Community Health Centre were added to make The Craig a community hub incorporating the Maternal Child Care Centre.

Our longstanding former Director, Susie Bunn, for many years fought for the establishment of our new kindergarten. Five years ago, parents took direct action and over 1200 local residents signed a petition requesting that Boroondara Council build a kindergarten for four-year-olds. In 2014, Council determined to rebuild the new Children᾿s Hub at The Craig.

Last year the original section of the building was demolished and, while the

rebuilding program ensued, children’s programs were moved to portables in the park.

Finally, after the combined efforts and goodwill of many, a new Children’s Hub, including our new four-year-olds kindergarten, was opened in November 2015 by the Minister for Families and Children, the Hon. Jenny Mikakos, and the Mayor of Boroondara, Coral Ross. Our new Craig Family Centre Manager, Christine Barca, will lead The Craig into its new phase of development.

We are delighted to say that our Occasional Care Programs, our Kanga Program and our four-year-olds kindergarten will

all operate in the new building and landscaped, purpose-built children's playground. The Craig will hire out the Neighbourhood House space and children’s garden for birthday parties on weekends and over holiday periods.

our neighbourhood shop

I

do not like shopping, but I have always been happy to go to our neighbourhood shop. We could walk there in 10 minutes if we hurried and were able to buy fresh bread or milk or even some useful groceries when household emergencies arose.

The shop still occupies the same building in Glen Iris, on Glen Iris Road. It began its commercial life as a grocery shop and dairy in 1927. It served the people who were settling into new houses in the rapidly developing area who were happy to buy necessities such as flour and sugar from metal bins, tea weighed out in brown paper bags and so on. Customers walked to the shop on dirt paths or along Glen Iris Road, occasionally having to skirt overflowing Back Creek.

The shop changed hands in the early 1930s. As a general store, it sold dairy and bakery products. A garage was established next to the shop to service the growing number of family cars in the area. This became a bus depot for Driver Buses who had started operating services along Glen Iris Road in 1931. The creek was barrelled and the land behind was slowly filled and would be converted into a park known as Back Creek Reserve in the late 1960s.

From 1947, families of Greek or Italian heritage owned and ran the shop as a milk bar. Newspapers and some magazines were available, as were sweets, ice-creams and soft drinks, not to mention cigarettes. The owners lived in the dwelling behind, and in the evenings would leave the door to their private area ajar so that they could hear late customers entering.

We soon took advantage of the shop’s convenience and services when we moved to the area in 1965. With bus stops opposite and almost next to it, people could travel to larger shopping locations such as Camberwell and the

newly established Chadstone Shopping Centre. Children going to secondary schools in the area – as well as people going to work in the city – caught the bus to Glen Iris railway station or to the nearby Glen Iris tram route on High Street. Despite this, the milk bar kept going because it was convenient for bus customers and locals to buy the daily paper there.

Our children have memories of being ‘sent to the shop’ to buy something needed at home. Later, our grandchildren were taken for walks to the shop and, later still, allowed to go by themselves and spend the change on whatever they fancied.

The present owners, who bought the business in 1988, no longer live in the dwelling, and in 2013 renamed the business the Glen Iris Pantry.

Our neighbourhood shop is a busy place where local people and families meet, always made welcome by the friendly staff. It existed well before we came to live in the area, and we expect it will still be there when we move on.

Celebration – and a challenge

ATURDAY, 10 October, saw the long-anticipated celebration of Whitehorse Historical Society’s 50 years with speeches by local councillors and members of parliament; and with the launch, presided over by historian Gerry Robinson, of Fifty Years of History, the WHS booklet published to tell the story of the Society so far.

On a rise above the Mullum Mullum Creek in Mitcham stood an old stone cottage.

So begins the booklet, and it continues on to tell of how in 1963 the Housing Commission issued an order for the cottage’s demolition. Following an immediate outcry from the community, in 1964 the Nunawading City Council had the demolition order revoked and purchased the property from the Schwerkolt family. Many who had campaigned to save the cottage now turned their energy to saving the history of the City of Nunawading as well. Thus was born the Nunawading and District Historical Society, now the Whitehorse Historical Society.

As Society president Vicki Jones-Evans said in her Anniversary address: “We now know much about the people who once lived and worked in the area. With photographs and documents, we know what they looked like and what happened to them. However, in 2015 this collected knowledge alone is not enough; we now need to tell their stories. This year we told of Mary Schwerkolt, caught in Germany in the middle of World War One, with family on

“To enable us to continue telling our stories, we will need new skills to help us preserve our history, new ways of connecting with people to foster historical interest and knowledge of their heritage. In celebrating the achievements of members since 1965, we also take on the changes and challenges of the future, so that in 2065 the Whitehorse community, if it is still called that, will understand their heritage and know what happened in the past.”

(continued from page 28) A member of the Box Hill Rotary Club since 1995 (President in 1999–2000 and 2009–2010) and currently Vocational Director, Tom works regularly at Rotary’s Blackburn South Opportunity Shop. He has long involvement as Deputy Chairman and Director of Inner Eastern Group Training and is a Director (Founder) of IE Directions Ltd, both not-for-profit organisations supporting young people by providing training in business management and other vocations. For over ten years he has been Chairman of Australian Overseas Foundation, which provides scholarships for selected 21–31 year olds who have completed apprenticeships or other vocational training and joined the workforce, to travel overseas for 12 months to enhance their skills and experience.

An active member of

the Burwood Uniting Church, Tom is an Elder, chairs its Hospitality Committee and is a member of the Congregational Care and Hospitality committees. He assists elderly congregation members with transport and he and his wife also assist in the broader community through Meals on Wheels.

Tom’s outstanding achievements have been recognised by his receiving the Order of Australia Medal in 1998 and in 2014 being the City of Whitehorse Citizen of the Year. Tom is adamant in saying, “I could not have achieved these honours without the wonderful support of my wife and family and a number of other great people.”

As a Burwood resident for more than 30 years, it was a pleasure and privilege as well as being a very interesting and informative experience for me to meet with Tom. I am sure that your dedication and commitment to our community over a long period of time have made the world, and particularly Burwood, a better place to live. Thanks, Tom.
