HIS issue is about beginnings and endings. About a new theatre company called Mad Cat that is putting a talent-filled footprint into the community; about a rejuvenation of the local Neighbourhood Watch; about a parish church that has a new lease on life. And about endings, with a celebration of the long and event-filled life of Edna Bartlett, founder of local theatre company Peridot. As Raine Biancalt, who wrote her story, says: there is so much more to her story than could fit into the space available in one issue.

And with December comes Christmas – and that beginning of all beginnings, the birth of Christ. We hope you enjoy this issue, and wish all our readers a merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

A

stretch of Gardiners Creek south of Nettleton Park in Glen Iris was environmentally developed not by a local authority, but rather by members and friends of the Lions Club of Boroondara–Gardiners Creek. For one weekend a month, for more than ten years, members and supporters of the club gathered together to prepare and plant native shrubs and trees to create what today is one of the most attractive stretches of the Gardiners Creek Trail.

A special anniversary dinner is being held on 12 December to celebrate the club’s achievements over the twenty years since its foundation. Four members of the club have been there from the beginning: President Chris Hayward, Treasurer Howard Hamlyn, and Lions Jenny Peacock and Julie Deamer – and they would like to celebrate this milestone in the club's journey with as many past members as possible.

The club, which centres its activities around the Ashburton area, has for most of the time worked with fewer than fifteen members and raised in excess of $100 000.

Fundraising methods have ranged from trivia nights to

sausage sizzles, and the sale of both Christmas trees and the famous Lions Christmas Cakes.

All of the money raised has been channelled into local and international projects, as well as local club projects such as the planting of trees along Gardiners Creek.

Club members have devoted many hours to organising, attending and working at such endeavours. The club receives many requests for disaster relief and in its time has responded promptly to send funds for victims of floods, bushfire and earthquakes.

Today the club, one of only two in the Boroondara Municipality, continues to serve the local Ashburton community with nine highly motivated and dedicated members who have great pride in the way that they work together.

AST issue we ran a short piece in our "Trawling Trove" series that quoted an article from the Argus of 18 April 1938, in which a reader decried the below-standard rolling stock that seemed to be in use locally.

One of our readers, Rosalie Whalen, shared this with the Friends of Hawthorn Tram Depot, and received the following interesting response: On behalf of the Friends of Hawthorn Tram Depot lnc., I would like to thank you for the sending us the extract from the Argus of 18 April 1938. lt is an interesting cutting. lt may have had a bit of an impact, as noted in an extract from one of our web pages(http://hawthorntramdepot.org.au/depot.htm): “The tram sheds were built for the narrow tramcars produced in the second decade of the twentieth century. However, in 1939 the M&MTB introduced new ‘luxury’ SW6 class tramcars with upholstered seats and sliding doors that were too wide to fit into the old tram sheds. Passengers of routes operated out of Hawthorn demanded that some of these more comfortable trams be allocated to these services, so the brick facades were removed in the 1940s, which just allowed the wider tramcars to squeeze in.”

Mad Cat a joyous beginning

HEATRE is alive and well ... which is attested to by the fact that, along with the established companies, new ones are still emerging. And one of these is Mad Cat Theatre Company. Mad Cat (Music and Dance, Comedy and Theatre) springs from the St Dunstan’s Rep Circle; under which umbrella Mad Cat’s first two productions, in 2014 and 2015, were staged.

The enthusiasm of Joanna Buddee and Marianne Duane for the company they’ve helped create is infectious as they tell of the plunge into the deep end they experienced as not only writers of the original music and lyrics for 2016’s show Baba Yaga, but also producing, directing, costumes and marketing.

Why such a plunge?

“David and Jess (Hewitson-Kerr), who revived St Dunstan’s Rep Circle in 2014, are moving to South Australia,” says Joanna. “So this year Marianne and I took the helm. We co-directed Baba Yaga as well as starring in it – though we didn’t cast ourselves!

“With this production we decided to take it to the next level – to change the name and also the venue. The quality of our shows just keeps improving. The last three shows have all been original scripts. David was the playwright of those and then Marianne and I wrote the music to Baba Yaga. We had an extremely talented cast of 20 in Baba Yaga, the majority from the Boroondara area – especially Hartwell Primary School. We performed at Kew Renaissance Theatre, which is part of Kew High School. Four hundred and fifty people came to see Baba Yaga and they loved it! We feel exceptionally proud”.

Anyone who has been in a play knows that, even in the best-run productions, things go wrong. Joanna has an example to share.

“The worst mistake was something I did. I had my song – and it was opening night – and it was so wellreceived I was just in shock at the applause. I got off stage in a bit of a daze and then went to the dressing room and I’m like ‘Oh my gosh! That was amazing!’

Then I stopped for a minute because I knew I had a quick change as I was going from my main character, Dunyasha, to become a sprite. ‘Quick,’ I said to myself.

‘Pull it together. You’ve got a quick change’.

“So I got dressed as a sprite; then one of the other actors came in and she went ‘aren’t you meant to be on stage now as Dunyasha?’ I (swore!) and flung the Dunyasha cloak over the sprite costume. I had no shoes on, but my skirt was really long. Then I went on like that! It wasn’t my full flamboyant character because I was trying not to show that I didn’t have the right outfit on, but actually no one noticed!”

Marianne remembers another story.

“We also had a major change the night before the opening.

We didn’t realise that a costume change was actually too difficult. The witch, Baba Yaga, had a scene where there is a great big fight, with smoke and special effects and then she disappears, presumably dead, but then shortly afterwards has a big confrontational scene in which she is revealed as (spoiler alert) the herione's mother. But there was simply not enough time in between the big stand-off and the reveal, so we had to re-write stuff just before Opening Night … in the end we pre-recorded a whole speech and had it coming over the speakers – and it worked better than the original idea!”

Twenty-sixteen was the year of Baba Yaga (though it hasn’t necessarily breathed its last), but already next year is under consideration, with one major production planned, as well as a children’s workshop in the summer holidays under the Mad Cat name.

The tram beats Bravo in 1889

A

CCORDING to The Reporter of 8 November 1889 (see below), on Cup Day 1888 Box Hill was almost deserted.

The following year it was the reverse when hoards descended upon the township – five thousand people, according to the article!

As my article in Burwood Bulletin issue 135 described, the now long-forgotten tramway between Box Hill and Doncaster was opened in October 1889. On 5 November, Melburnians descended upon Box Hill by train but then immediately made their way to the tramway to Doncaster. Instead of watching Bravo win the 1889 Melbourne Cup, they hot-footed it to Box Hill – all set to see the latest innovation: the electric tram. So keen were they that most of them had to tramp up the steep hill on foot as the one tramcar could not possibly cope with so many passengers.

Things were turned topsy turvy in Box Hill on Cup Day, much to the surprise of everyone. A great many of the residents were either out picnicking or had gone to Flemington to witness the great event of the year. As this has been the case in previous years it was not a matter of surprise that it should be repeated on Tuesday; but on former occasions Box Hill was almost deserted on the day the Cup was run for. Last Tuesday, however, the reverse was the case. Although nearly all the residents took their departure at an early hour, as the day wore on their places were more than filled ten times over by visitors who came from other suburbs, where the air is not so pure and bracing, and where there is no romantic scenery for the eye to rest upon.

At every station between Canterbury and Melbourne the cry at the intermediate stations was for railway tickets for Box Hill. In fact “Box Hill’ sounded everywhere.

Men, women, and children of all ages, and belong to all grades of

society were flocking into the carriages bound for Box Hill. By about two o’clock there could not have been less than five thousand visitors, wandering to and fro in our streets. As soon as they got to the railway station they made a rush for the train, which plies between Box Hill and Doncaster.

The tram was literally besieged by excursionists who wished to continue their journey as far as Doncaster. It would have taken 2 trams instead of one to cope with the demand that was made upon it. As soon as the visitors saw that there was no chance of continuing the journey on the tram they commenced to foot it.

In a short time the route between Box Hill and Doncaster presented a most animated appearance. There was pater and mater families with all the youngsters who were carrying baskets well filled with provisions; newly wedded pairs who had no encumbrances; while further along the route, and mostly in secluded spots, scores of Romeos and Juliets could be distinguished, and amongst others

could be readily discerned the man who had come out to inspect the land with a view to purchase some of the splendid building sites between the townships named. The site taken as a whole was a very pleasant one, and shows that this district is fast becoming a favorite resort for holiday seekers.

There can be no doubt but that in future Box Hill and Doncaster will be the chief places of attraction at holiday times, when thousands who have to live in the overcrowded cities of Richmond, Carlton, and South Melbourne, will visit this salubrious part in order to get a whif of fresh air which tends to expand their lungs and adds renewed vigor to the system. Box Hill will become at no distant date a second Brighton, and those who have been once are only too happy to come again. We are indebted for this impetus to business to the electric tram, which is one of the chief sources of attraction, and also to the publication which has been given to the grand scenery which is to be found on all sides.

Helpmates

W

AVERLEY Helpmates, a not-for-profit community based Supported Employment & Training Program located in Ashwood is celebrating 30 years of service in 2016.

In October 1986, a group of forward-thinking community members established a new program in Ashwood to employ and support young people with Intellectual Disability. Set up as an alternate employment option to the sheltered workshop model, Waverley Helpmates’ goal was to provide meaningful work beneficial to both community members and young people who required a supportive work environment.

From its humble beginnings of ten Helpmates with 50 jobs, Waverley Helpmates has grown to be a thriving organisation of 33 Helpmates and with over 700 customers – meeting and far exceeding its original aims.

The Ashwood location was specifically selected to match the needs of an ageing population with the abilities of young people who were requiring regular work.

Although the Ashwood, Mt Waverley & Chadstone areas make up the bulk of Helpmates’ customers, the Helpmates travel far and wide, and also maintain six retirement villages and five schools.

Being a small organisation, Waverley Helpmates provides lots of time for relationships to develop between customers and Helpmates. These friendships are celebrated each year in early December at the Thank You Afternoon Tea. There are no restrictions on who can become a customer, providing they fall within our “catchment” area and will be supportive of the way our program operates.

Occasionally described as an “onion”, (when one layer is removed, another layer will be revealed underneath), there are many facets to the Waverley Helpmates’ program.

Literacy, numeracy, work ethic, punctuality, reliability, budgeting and cooking are some of the skills that the Helpmates learn. They also fundraise annually for Reefton CFA and collect blankets and clothes for the Avalon Centre in Malvern, in the part of the program that aims to develop social awareness and community responsibility. An optional holiday is offered to the Helpmates every year, and this year 14 Helpmates and six staff members holidayed for 12 days in Chiang Mai Thailand.

By offering work within the community, several boundaries are being broken down, with both sides being winners. Customers receive a regular, reliable and affordable lawn service and the Helpmates win because they are receiving payment for a valuable and real job being done. Everybody is learning that being a little bit different does not mean you cannot do as well as someone else. Diversity is important, welcomed and encouraged.

Empowered by the committee, the staff empower the Helpmates in their work so that the standards are of an excellent quality.

Every person in the world needs essentially the same things – a safe environment, something worthwhile to do, someone to love and be loved by and something to look forward to; for those involved in the Waverley Helpmates’ program, all of these goals are surely being met every day.

spoke to Anna Walker and Klaudia Lozo in the warm offices of the Louise Multicultural Centre in Box Hill.

Anna, who has just assumed the role of president, is passionate about her work, as are all those who come together in the organisation – and all are volunteers.

She hales from Scotland, and coming to Australia was an eye-opener for her.

“People from Malaysia ... in Scotland I’d never met any before. Just the diversity of the nature of Australia amazed me, and people cooperate with each other to make it a good place,” she says. “We get a lot out of this, and participants at the centre, they get a lot out of it. Their English improves and I think, more importantly, their confidence improves. They mainly come to learn English, but for instance we also have Mandarin classes – I started to learn Mandarin from one of our tutors. When you learn a language you also learn about the culture.”

“We have the Korean Drumming,” adds Klaudia. “We have Chinese dancing and a Chinese national version of line dancing. Although it is about learning the language, the basis is mainly social. We have had some students coming to us since inception – 34 to 35 odd years.”

Klaudia goes on to describe how people coming to the centre are eager to share each other’s cultures. Recently they had a Moon Festival mid-morning tea. People brought food in to share. “You get different cultures saying ‘Oooh what’s that and how did you make it?’” she says. “And you’ve got Chinese ladies trying to make Greek Spanakopita. One of them was successful, but there was a Greek cake that one of the Chinese ladies tried to make – I think she put in three times the amount of cinnamon required! The Greek lady promised to come over to her place and show her how to do it.”

Much of what happens in classes is contextual learning. For instance, approaching local elections were used

as both a tool to teach English and an integration opportunity. Students were taught about the Council and about its responsibilities. Those who came from countries where freedom doesn’t exist have to get used to the notion that it is safe to choose. “If you’ve come as a refugee, you really need to learn that you can have different opinions and you are not going to be castigated because of that,” says Anna.

Both Anna and Klaudia emphasise how much they too have learned from their pupils, giving as an example students who come from China. “We often put the Chinese as one group, but they are so very different. A lady who comes from Beijing has different ways than somebody from Shanghai, and very different to Hong Kong; it is wonderful learning about the variety. You realise that you cannot make people just one group” says Anna. “I think what often impresses me is people from very different cultures, the willingness they’ve had to share with each other. So you will have someone from Egypt who is struggling about something; a student from Japan says ‘Oh I know’, and that sharing sense really becomes a strong bond within the class”.

Occasionally the centre will have students who have difficult home circumstances; Anna recalls one case where a particular family had child issues at school. “The woman in question started to do an English class, and then did volunteer work here in the office, developing skills and confidence so that eventually she was able to stand on her own two feet. We were able to step in and do a one-on-one program with the family to help them build their confidence to work, and also for the child to get assistance. The child progressed beautifully and is now comfortable at school – it is a real success story!”

The Louise Multicultural Centre started through St John’s parish in Mitcham, and out of the local migrant hostel, when the Vietnamese boat people were coming. The need for action was obvious to founder, the late Sister Miriam Boland of the Daughters of Charity order. She asked herself the question “What do these people need?” They needed blankets; they needed toys for the children …

Recruiting some of the St John parishioners Sister Miriam helped out wherever they could. It might have been English – trying to help the people to understand what letters meant; driving pregnant women to the Royal Women’s Hospital – anything that was required. Eventually the Parish Priest and the Council got wind of what was going on and a house was allocated so that people could have a place to go. And so it has become the organisation it is today – still 100% voluntary, as a Neighbourhood or Community House and an indispensable part of the community.

ABBEY GIRLS

T

HE Abbey Girls of Victoria is a book club, centred around the novels written by Elsie J Oxenham. “What books? Which author?” I hear you ask – or maybe some of you are saying “That sounds vaguely familiar – I may have read something like that in my youth.” Well, let me give you some more information.

EJO, as her dedicated readers call her, wrote novels for teenage girls, being first published in 1907 and continuing to write until 1959, the year before her death. Her father was also a well-known author. Born William Dunkerley, he wrote over 40 novels and many religious works under the name John Oxenham. It was as tribute to her father that EJO also chose to use the name Oxenham, and she went on to write at least 89 books and many short stories.

The Abbey Girls series consists of 38 directly related novels and many “connectors” i.e. books that involve some of the lesser characters or which are set farther afield. With disowned relatives, unexpected inheritances, adventures, treasures, secret tunnels, romances and traditional English pastimes such as folk dancing, singing, Morris dancing and May Queens, the books encapsulate an era far from our current lives, one which we only see in programs such as Downton Abbey.

FOREVER! which were taken from real life, though names were changed – as well as geography if it suited the story! Daisy Daking or The Pixie, for example, was an important character and many of her exploits in the books (such as travelling behind the lines during WWI and teaching folk dancing to the soldiers as a morale boosting exercise) are true. The Abbey itself, a focal point for many of the stories, is based on Cleeve Abbey in Somerset, though renamed and moved to the border of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire for the purposes of the stories. EJO also added the underground tunnels which provide a lot of excitement at various times!

Kentisbury Castle is Arundel Castle and Whiteleaf Cross is a landscape feature which can still be seen.

The books are still surprisingly readable. The themes of friendship, loyalty, charity through practical help, making choices – doing the right thing, being honest and honourable, showing respect, wholeheartedly taking part in life, are ones which still resonate with many people.

The central characters, teenage red haired cousins who inherit a ruined Abbey and a Manor House, their friendships, their lives as they grow and have children of

their own, the activities they love and the adventures they have along the way make for pleasant, enjoyable reading – and re-reading.

The Victorian Club began in 1985 when our current President, having responded to an ad in The Australian Women’s Weekly, contacted the Queensland writer of the ad. Other Victorians also answered the ad, so our president opened her home to any other fans who cared to come and swap books and stories. On a sweltering day in January people began arriving with books. More people, and more until the small house was bursting at the seams – a club was born! It has been continuing with a strong and consistent membership ever since and new members are always made so welcome they soon feel like old hands! It is also wonderful to find like-minded people who “still read those kids books!”

I considered leaving the job I love

“I

considered leaving the job I love because I couldn’t hear people properly” says Sharon, who works as a nurse in the emergency department of Alfred Hospital. This was before she obtained her new hearing aids from audiologist Hung To at Alpha Hearing.

Since being fitted with hearing aids, Sharon now feels she has “a few more years left in her!” The ability to hear people clearly has given her more confidence at meetings, in the tea room and importantly for her job, during face-to-face consultations with patients. Improving her hearing has not only helped her communication with others at work, but emotionally it has made her happier because “life has become easier”.

It was not always like this for Sharon. For years, Sharon’s husband wanted her to get her hearing checked, but she would procrastinate and make excuses. Her children would talk to her in the car and she would unintentionally ignore them because she couldn’t hear what they were saying. At the age of 42, Sharon finally decided to get her hearing tested. Despite the problems she was experiencing, she was “really surprised” by the test results that indicated she had a hearing loss. However, it still took Sharon a further five years before she was able to come to terms with this and take her cousin’s recommendation to seek help at Alpha Hearing.

Asked why it took her so long to deal with her hearing loss, Sharon says she just accepted it and thought she had to

live with it. She didn’t know she should and could be part of the conversation. It was only after she was fitted with hearing aids that she realised just how much she was missing and the problems it was causing.

Having worn her new hearing aids for six months now, Sharon says “I am so glad I didn’t leave it for another five years”. Sharon’s advice to friends and family is to listen to the people around you and get your hearing tested if you have problems.

An extraordinary life I

T was an auspicious day on 6 August 1926 in Kent, England, when Edna Frances Clarke joined the fold. By age three, it was clear she had weak ankles so her aunt suggested enrolling her in dance classes. Edna’s life-long love of singing, dancing and acting resulted. Although dancing strengthened her legs, she was never able to play active sport.

Keen to assist children, when schools closed during World War II, 14-year-old Edna, who had been dux of her school, started a school for neighbourhood children in her parents’ attic. A year later, 17-year-old Bill Jones first saw her in the local park; he later wrote that he knew that this was the girl he would marry. Daughter Vivien: “Dad adored her from that moment until his untimely death at 56 years.”

Their first child, Martin, was born in a London Hospital in June 1944 when the first of thousands of doodlebugs (bombs with wings) landed on London. The new young mothers were handed their babies each evening and the nursing staff went home!

In 1958, Bill, Edna, Martin, Vivien and Trevor emigrated to Australia. Seeking immediate community involvement, they joined an entertainment group called the Modernaires and travelled around Victoria presenting musical shows at aged care facilities and hospitals.

I spoke with the effervescent Edna in February this year at a Peridot dress rehearsal where she was accompanied by enthusiastic residents of her senior citizens’ village. Meeting Edna was a true ‘experience’ – 90 years of age, slim and spry body, topped by bright red hair to match her bubbly personality.

In the 1960s, Edna enrolled at Swinburne Technical College – a lifetime of producing, directing, set design, stage management, adjudication, dramaturgy and a children’s theatre workshop were the result. Edna said that students were not only taught acting but about makeup, sound and lighting. “You’ve got to know how to put the lights in the right place to get the effect you want. We had to learn everything – not just being on stage.” (continued on page 35)

Village to Village

UR fifteenth walk takes us northerly “from village to village” (about 6km), from Burwood to Mont Albert.

Starting in Burwood Village (Melway 60G6), walk westerly from Warrigal Road to the second street heading north from Toorak Road – Fairview Avenue. It may not have a street sign, but it has large street trees and is almost opposite Queens Parade.

This is an attractive street with many traditional gardens around older homes, and runs gently downhill.

At the end of Fairview Avenue, turn left into Oxford Street, then right into Joffre Street. As you pass Thomas Street, you may like to explore the lovely small park, Through Road Reserve, with its playground and great seats. After you do this, continue north along Joffre

Street. The next street on the right is Morey Street – turn into it, and after about 100m there is an entrance into a much larger park (Cooper Reserve). Walk through Cooper Reserve on the western side, where there is a popular playground, seats and a toilet. Sitting near the playground gives a good view over the reserve.

Leave Cooper Reserve, turning left along Green Street, and you will reach Through Road in a few minutes, where you turn right, continuing north to the tempting Through Road Shops. Cross Riversdale Road, and continue north between the shops and a small car park for just 30m to a walking track on the left (also more-or-less northerly). A little farther on, keep left of both the kindergarten and the playground, taking in the information signs and still continuing roughly

north. This path leads to a wetland area. There are two junctions in the wetland area – take the right fork at both of them. When you reach a road, cross directly into a blocked street (Rose Avenue).

At the end of Rose Avenue, cross busy Warrigal Road and walk along Mathilde Road, then right (south) into Russell Street, left into Scottsdale Street and left again into Royal Lane. At the end of Royal Lane, go right into Belmont Street. (This all sounds complicated, but it looks OK “on the ground”). At the end of Belmont Street, you will see Edyvean Street slightly to your left.

At the end of it you will see a very small park entrance (to your north) beside a tennis club. This path winds uphill through Harding Street Reserve, and, yes, you guessed it, we will be going past the Surrey Hills Communication Tower, reviled by many, but recognised as a very important historical structure by others; and certainly seen by possibly millions of motorists.

However, there is something else to see prior to reaching the tower. As you ascend this park path, you reach a real highlight, a lookout platform, with a seat and panoramic views of the eastern suburbs and city, as would be expected from this most prominent hill.

Continue north past the tower, cross busy Canterbury Road, walk west (to your left) past the reservoir, admiring more great city views. Turn first right into Benwerrin Road, which is also a 10-minute gentle downhill stroll past many interesting houses. At another very small park there is an interesting heritage sign.

Walk westerly from it into Windsor Crescent, then take the first street on your right (Louise Avenue). Five minutes away, cross Mont Albert Road (We have traffic lights here) and wander through Mont Albert towards the railway station. It certainly has a “village” feel, a variety of interesting shops, including coffee shops, seating and a public toilet.

There are two choices for returning to Burwood: just near the corner of Louise Avenue and Mont Albert Road there is a bus stop (on the southern side) for route 766, which is easily the quicker way back – but check its timetable, because it can be “patchy”. Alternatively take any train heading east (Blackburn, Belgrave, Lilydale, etc.) just one stop to Box Hill, then catch SmartBus 903, heading towards Mordialloc.

N Tuesday, 30 August, at the Parkview Room at the Camberwell Civic Centre, Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch (BNHW) held an Awards Night, which also celebrated its current rejuvenation.

Strongly community-minded, the Mayor of Boroondara, Jim Parke is the only Australian ever to hold the office of President of Crime Stoppers International. After a conversation between him and the BNHW Chair, Suzanne Dunlop, the Awards Night was planned over a number of months working closely with Kaitlynn Yeomans, Safer Communities Officer Community Planning and Development Department at Boroondara Council. We were honoured to have Geoff Kloot, Acting CEO of NHW and the Chairman Manningham NHW as our MC for the evening.

The evening was very well supported, with 86 people present, which included honoured guests from NHW (Vic) Board, volunteers, police, politicians, councillors and members from several of the resident associations and different community groups.

The meeting opened with the opportunity for everybody present to network for about half an hour over a convivial glass before a range of interesting and yummy canapes were served in advance of the formal part of the evening.

His Honour, Michael Strong, as first speaker, updated the audience about the increased interest and invigoration in NHW. He also flagged the change to the criminal checks and membership policy, which created interest with the members from the residents’ association.

These associations are considering membership of BNHW, which will provide an opportunity for wider community communication in Boroondara about issues relating to safety and the prevention of crime. Currently BNHW works in only a very limited area of the municipality and we believe it important to cover the whole of the municipality.

Inspector Noy from Boroondara Police spoke about his recent appointment to Boroondara; and of how “the public are the police and the police are the public”. He stressed the importance of

BNHW and the Boroondara Police working as a partnership. BNHW has worked closely with the police in a number of activities over the past nine months with kiosks, leaflet drops, BBQ and street festivals as well as with Manningham NHW with Safe Plate days. These are where volunteers remove the screws on car registration plates and replace them with one-way screws which can only be removed by the police or at a car dealership. This prevents offenders from stealing number plates from vehicles which are left in the street.

At the conclusion of the evening, Certificates of Appreciation were presented to many long-serving BNHW volunteers and Area Managers.

Special thanks for the evening was expressed for the support of the Boroondara Mayor, Councillors and staff for the sponsorship and assistance in arranging this function.

George Bills:

A legacy of welfare for animals

G

EORGE (Joe) Bills left a lasting local legacy to animal welfare when he died in December 1927.

He and his wife Annis, who predeceased him, had no children but shared a great love of animals. After providing some personal bequests his will established a trust and directed that the residue of his estate and income therefrom be used to provide watering troughs for horses and for the purpose of preventing cruelty and to alleviate the suffering of animals in any country. Evidence of his enduring legacy can be found today in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) Centre at Burwood East and horse troughs at Box Hill and Blackburn South.

George, one of fourteen children, was born in the United Kingdom in 1859. His father was a bird dealer and instilled a love of all animals in his children. When George was fourteen his family emigrated to New Zealand and later to Australia, initially settling at Echuca. When he was twenty-one

George moved to Sydney and worked as a bird dealer with his brother Harry. By 1883, after realising how well Harry’s business was doing, George moved to Brisbane and set up his own bird

dealing business. Whilst there he also became involved in wire weaving to make inner spring mattresses. Other siblings later became involved in the manufacture of these mattresses and this resulted in the establishment of BBB, an iconic name in bed making and George’s relocation to Victoria to live in Hawthorn where other members of his family lived.

In 1885, George married his wife Annis, who shared his love of animals.

They had no children and became benefactors both for people in need and animal welfare causes. George retired in 1908 and he and Annis travelled quite extensively. Unfortunately, she passed away on a trip to England in 1910.

George continued to support animal welfare causes and was made a Life Governor of the Victorian Society for the Protection of Animals (VSPA) in 1924.

His brother Henry was a Commissioner of VSPA from 1913 to 1922. George died of heart failure on 14 December 1927 at the age of 68.

Essex Heights' Singapore choir

S

INGING is a wonderful activity – and a nice talent to have. And with interest and involvement, you get to go places and win prizes: Essex Heights Primary School in Mount Waverley won a Bronze award in the third Annual Singapore International Choral Festival held in August. Fifteen students from Years 5 and 6 were accompanied by some parents, their music teacher, Tanya Dolence, and Principal Andrew Crossett for one week to Singapore to take part in the festival.

It was held from 10 to 13 August at University Cultural Centre in Singapore, and there were 1563 participants singing, which included 40 choirs from China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore. Essex Heights Primary School choir was the only group from Australia. The students had been preparing for the competition since the beginning of the year. The trip cost each student about $2000, and they also raised a significant amount from a sausage sizzle outside their local Woolworths to help pay for uniforms.

This is the first time that Essex Heights students have gone overseas for a choral festival, and the group seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the trip! It was nice speaking to Tanya and two of her choir students – Natalie (Year 6) and Amber (Year 5) – who went to the festival. Apart from the rehearsals and workshops, the girls said that the students and their parents had a good tour of Singapore

and enjoyed sightseeing and various fun-filled activities.

After they returned from Singapore, they also won first prize for the Primary Choir section in the 38th Waverley Music Eisteddfod, held on 22 August at Mount Waverley.

ROUND 20 years ago Cheryl Webster was asked to complete a survey concerning the Burwood Neighbourhood House. Had she heard of it, did she know what it offered? The survey also wanted to know what professional experience the survey participant had.

“Accountancy” Cheryl wrote.

Six months later Cheryl was contacted directly and asked to be a committee member of the Burwood Neighbourhood House to act as its treasurer. She then took on the position formally and was offered that Coordinator nine months later, managing its day-to-day operations.

Cheryl’s first job was to address an exercise book that was handed to her, which detailed a bank balance of only $6000.

In those days, the Neighbourhood House was simply a little old council-owned home that housed five community groups: the Lone Parents Group, a local playgroup, a book club, the Country Women’s Association, a history group, and the Burwood Bulletin – none of which interacted with each other, thereby creating a duplication of costly house supports.

Cheryl’s second and more daunting job was to create a centralised office in which to account and report on all house activities, to develop associated procedures and policies and to look at meeting expanding community needs by developing new activities for the Neighbourhood House. Then she had to market it all – no easy feat.

Twenty years on the Burwood Neighbourhood House oversees 59 community activities, is in partnership with six other agencies, and has introduced a project called “Knitted Knockers Australia”, which has been taken up internationally.

Moreover, its current annual turnover is around $178 000. Not

too shabby for a small team of longserving staff!

“For a little house, we’re very proactive,” said Cheryl. “Why, only recently we were successful in attracting a $10 000 grant that allowed us to go into local schools to speak to students about how to be responsible with alcohol – especially during Schoolies Week.

“Overall, we’ve connected and engaged with our community to build great partnerships and to provide better community supports for the people who live in it.”

Infrastructure was another area Cheryl had to address for the house.

A range of funding was sought and confirmed over the years, which allowed for the original and rather bare backyard to be renovated into a lush playground with safe swings, slides, climbing frames and plastic grass for all seasons. That little exercise cost around $8000.

Then there was the fitting out of a community computer lab with five new computers, a new centralised kitchen for all to use, new carpet for rooms … and so it went on. All in all, hundreds of thousands of dollars was raised by successful campaigning for funds over the past 20 years to upgrade facilities and offer more choice for the community it serves.

“I’m proud to say that we’ve transformed an old house into a community centre that now operates five days a week with house usage at around 60 hours each week,” said Cheryl. “These days we are getting requests from universities to take workplace students, requests from schools to take students into our VCAL admin program, and we have volunteers knocking on our door to help.”

Christmas crisis?

F

OR me, Christmas is traditionally a time to forget all about the garden until: “Oh no!

People will be coming and I haven’t weeded in weeks!”

Well, we don’t, do we? Well, I don’t! I’m too busy decorating the tree, gift shopping and most importantly, getting the food ready. Who has time for gardening? It’s lucky if it gets watered.

But then I looked outside and all I saw was untidiness. So, the question is, how could I quickly disguise a garden that has been neglected? I started off by trimming anything that looked dead, dying or just plain over-grown. Within an hour my garden recycle bin was almost full, but the change was amazing: not unlike picking up the kids’ toys and clearing a cluttered room.

I have a lot of red and yellow blooms in my garden so I realised that a regular brown tanbark

won’t do anything to flash out the colours. Instead, I used Black tanbark. Suddenly the colours “POP!” and I’ve not only disguised the tired ground, but also helped to nourish the soil.

Finally, I brought out my secret weapon: The High-Pressure Hose. I love that tool. One long blast and the fallen leaves whoosh off across the garden, moss unexpectedly flies, and bird poo is eradicated from the garden seats, making them a safe and pleasant place to sit again. Much better.

Now it’s time to relax and take a deep breath.

My Indian friends gave me a lemon balm plant and now its scent blesses the air. They will be joining us here on Christmas day and we go to their house to celebrate Ganesh’s birthday. George Bills: A legacy of welfare for animals a number of animal welfare initiatives around Melbourne supported by significant donations from the George Bills Trust during a period, over several decades, when there appears to have been a fractious relationship between several animal welfare agencies. The donations appear to have assisted in working towards an increased spirit of cooperation between these agencies

through initiatives such as the purchase of an animal ambulance.

In 1934, the VPSA was able to purchase land at Preston for use as a rest home for horses and kennel for dogs, predominantly funded by a Bills Trust donation. In 1939, this land was sold and funds used to purchase 28 acres of land at Burwood East, the site of the current RSPCA headquarters.

Another significant donation resulted in the Trust funding the establishment of a rescue centre on the Burwood site, which was named the George Bills Rescue Centre when opened in 1964. Long serving RSPCA President and Patron, Dr

Hugh Wirth AM said, “The Bills family was not particularly wealthy, but they recognised the need for people in Victoria to look after animals properly.”

The other significant legacy from the Trust was the manufacture and installation of a large number of concrete horse troughs, some with small drinking troughs for dogs attached, throughout most of Australia and several in Britain.

Dr Wirth said, “They established a Trust for the purposes of developing the design of these horse (and dog) troughs, and placed these troughs free of charge at wellsited places such as outside pubs. I think there would have been a lot of delighted horses when they saw a George Bills trough, particularly on a hot summer’s day!”

George Gemmell of Stanhope has established a website dedicated to collating information about the history and location of the Bills troughs – https:// billswatertroughs.wordpress.com/. The site is well worth a visit to check out the location of troughs and I am sure that George would be interested to hear about and obtain photographs of any troughs not listed on his website.

The first few troughs were hand made from granite and installed in the area around George’s home. Detailed research by George Gemmell indicates that over 500 troughs were constructed and installed up until the end of World

by Rocla Concrete Pipes and the troughs were installed in Victoria and NSW from 1930. No troughs were made after 1939.

The cost of the troughs was about £13, plus the transport and installation costs.

There are four Bills troughs in the City of Whitehorse. One is located just inside the old entrance gates to the Box Hill Cemetery in Whitehorse Road opposite the Box Hill City Oval, a second in parkland at the corner of Blackburn and Canterbury Roads and two others at the RSPCA Centre at Burwood East.

RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker said, “The two Bills troughs that reside at our Burwood East site hold great historical significance to RSPCA Victoria and will continue to be treasured.” One of these troughs is located outside the Centre’s Education facility where it can be seen by the manystudents who visit the Centre each year.

Like George Bills, I share a great love of all creatures great and small. It is clear that he made a great contribution to animal welfare both during his life and through the Trust established after his death. There’s no doubt his legacy formed a sound basis for the development of animal welfare facilities currently available through the RSPCA. Although the majority of the remaining horse troughs are ornamental, they are testament to an era in our history when we were dependent on horses for transport.

We are most fortunate to have these benefits and reminders of his passion for animals available locally. I am also very proud to say that he was my great grand uncle.

HE Follow The Star display will run for over three weeks this year and will be available for viewing until just before Christmas. It is located at the Burwood Uniting Church on the corner of Warrigal Road and Hyslop Street, Glen Iris and will run from 1 December to 23 December.

free Document Signing Service (DSS) has been established at the Boroondara Police Station, 34 Harp Road, Kew East, as a community service promoted by the Victorian Department of Justice.

The DSS is staffed by a roster of volunteer Justices of the Peace (JPs) and is available each Monday and Wednesday from 11am to 1pm. It is not necessary to be a resident of the Boroondara area to take advantage of this free service.

St Matthew's bounces back

HE evening of Saturday, 24 September was one of celebration and rejoicing for the community of St Matthew's Anglican Church, Ashburton (Ashwood).

As it entered its 70th year of existence, parishioners gathered for a special dinner, reflected on some past years of turmoil and uncertainty, and gave thanks to God for his great goodness.

Despite being threatened with closure, losing several valued members as a result and losing status as a full parish, those remaining never wavered in their determination to keep St Matthew's going.

Imagine their delight when Archdeacon Ian Morrison, a special guest at the dinner, announced that Archbishop-in-Council had decreed that, from Sunday, 2 October, St Matthew's would again have full parish status. (Also occasioning a resounding cheer that evening was the announcement that the Western Bulldogs would play in the AFL Grand Final!)

During the evening a special presentation was also made to Churchwarden Barry Parker, who has given lifelong service, leadership and encouragement to everyone at St Matthew's. It was a small way of showing esteem and appreciation for him and for his many quiet acts of kindness. Members from both congregations spoke glowingly in support of Barry.

In addition to its hardy survivors, about four years ago St Matthew's gained a new congregation – members of the Church of South India. The two congregations unite in worship at least once a month, and the arrival of CSI has injected youth and vigour into parish life – another example of God's care for us.

Because St Matthew's stands at the far eastern edge of Ashburton, shrouded by tall trees at the corner of Warrigal Road and High Street, many people are unaware of its existence or think that it has closed. Be assured that we are very much open for business and visitors always receive a very warm welcome. Entrance is from High Street, opposite the Dry Cleaner's.

An extraordinary life Around the same time, she studied at Ingmar Bergman’s Melbourne’s School of Film. Edna and Bill produced environmental documentaries and Vivien recalls: “They also filmed a TV series – the video equipment was so heavy they were often up to their knees in mud and being chased by trains on bridges when they had been told trains didn’t run on Sundays!”

Although Edna trained at Kenwood Theatre where many actors went on to TV shows such as Cop Shop and Number 96, she wouldn’t give up full-time employment to pursue that possibility, instead continuing in community theatre in plays and musicals and she was involved in establishing and running of Melbourne’s first ‘accredited’ hospitality training programs and ran a licensed motel/restaurant in the ‘seventies.

Following the death of her beloved Bill in 1980, Edna worked in youth theatre and also coordinated an after-school program where she taught boys to knit and girls to be more assertive!

Back to her thespian pursuits: at the 1983 Waverley Festival of Theatre, Edna won Best Production, Best Set Design and Best Actress award!

Although her ambition to enter the 1986 Moomba Festival was thwarted by local groups, at an after-show cast party the woman running the Moomba Festival, having just seen her work, suggested Edna join the festival! “You will only have to do two plays that we’ll come and see, and we’ll invite you into it.”

The outcome was that she and future husband Gordon Bartlett started their own theatre company – Peridot (named for her August birthstone). With no time for auditions, she asked friends to join the cast of Moving. They had no flats or props and thankfully the (now defunct) Box Hill City Theatre Company loaned them a set.

Edna’s Moomba entry, The Dresser (its first non-professional production) resulted in Best Production, Best Director and Best Set Design – bear in mind that Edna was now nearly 60.

Over the years Edna worked with schools, casting and directing school musicals at Primary and Secondary level and, having had no previous background in films or theatre, Gordon assisted Edna in producing educational videos for schools and the Victorian indigenous pre-school community.

Playwrights were still seeking Edna’s assistance earlier this year – until Vivien told her that she must tell people her age – no one could guess – because she thought she could still do anything.

“As kids we laughed because Mum couldn’t run”, recalls Vivien. “However, x-rays revealed, when she was in her 70s and had resorted to directing plays on her knees, that she had been born with deformed ankles. The specialist surgeons couldn’t believe that she had walked at all. Her ankle bones were fused to relieve some pain but she refused to use a stick!”

Vivien says that Edna was also a superb seamstress and made fine tapestries and cross-stitch work (see right) – her unfinished work will be completed by family members. Vivien: “Mum had a finger in every pie but everything she did she did extremely well. Right to the last Mum just wanted to help people and make them good at what they do.”

Edna was fortunate to have husbands very willing to, as

Vivien put it, ‘follow her dream’. When she and Gordon moved to a retirement village in their eighties, they soon had other villagers embroiled in play readings – what every retirement village needs is an Edna!

Following a life of constant pain, Edna passed away from cancer on 15 September, shortly after celebrating her 90th birthday. She is survived by her husband, Gordon, aged 95; two of three children, five of seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

“The vegetables you grow yourself organically are much tastier and healthier than what is generally available in the supermarkets; however, being selective in the use of chemicals has its drawbacks with the produce being shared with resident and transient insects. We console ourselves by knowing “they don’t eat much.” It is a delight to pick vegies and take them home to cook or just eat immediately.”

As well as growing food or flowers to enjoy, many members find working on their plot is therapeutic and a chance to “recharge their batteries.”

hat is an ombudsman? An ombudsman is an independent person who can investigate and resolve disputes between individuals and organisations. EWOV is not a government body, but a free and independent service for all Victorians who have a complaint about their electricity, gas or water company.

If a customer has tried to resolve their complaint with their energy or water company and they remain dissatisfied with the response, they can call EWOV for further assistance on 1800 500 509 or lodge their complaint online via www.ewov.com.au.

EWOV can investigate most issues about energy and water including, billing, payment difficulties, energy disconnection or water restriction,

energy marketing and account transfer issues.

The most common reason that customers in the City of Whitehorse contacted our office was because of debt collection activity and specifically in Burwood, because of errors on their energy and water bills or disconnection/restriction of their energy or water supply.
