T was Dorothy Sutherland, a member of the Hawthorn Historical Society, who came up with the idea of creating an Aboriginal food garden along the Yarra River.

The garden began in 1990 and was named after a Woirurrung clan who claim land by the Yarra River. The Gardens were a joint project of Hawthorn Council and the Society whose members removed rampant onion weed and ivy – in the process uncovering part of a bluestone wall – replacing them with endemic native plant species and foods.

These plants were used by the local Wurundjeri people for food, fibre and medicine.

On the banks of the Yarra near the Wallen Road Bridge in Hawthorn, the garden is a successful effort to recreate something of the landscape as it may have been before the impact of Europeans. Now in its 27th year, the garden continues to be managed by the Society and the City of Boroondara and is an educational resource for Wurundjeri plants.

In 1837 the first Europeans settled in the Boroondara area and one of 38 local Indigenous groups in the region at the time was the Wurundjeri. When Robert Hoddle surveyed the area in 1837, he declared it the 'Parish of Boroondara'.

As it was densely wooded he took the word from the Woiwurrung language, translating it as 'where the ground is thickly shaded'.

There are 10 Aboriginal archaeological sites within Boroondara. In addition to these sites, three cultural places are significant to local history and reconciliation.

more than just a tiny house M

ANY years ago I first saw the film An American in Paris and was immediately captivated by the opening scene in which Gene Kelly wakes up in his tiny apartment, hoists his bed up to the ceiling and deftly produces a chair and table from seemingly nowhere. The magic of everything needed being within easy reach has always fascinated me; but the thinking behind The New Joneses Tiny House (recently on display as part of the Whitehorse Seniors Festival) goes much further than that.

The brain behind The New Joneses is Tamara DiMattina, whose trip to Antarctica in 2010 led to her discovering and seeing for herself the effect we humans are having on our planet. She decided she wanted to do something about it, and determined to use her background in communications to create campaigns that could help people understand we can all be part of the solution. Her first project was “Buy Nothing New Month” (which continues to be promoted each October) encouraging people to take a step back and only buy what is needed; not all the extras we are told we need.

“The New Joneses was the obvious extension of that project,” says Tamara. “The idea came from looking at how (in every way) we are wasteful; how we are not being smart with our resources and can do so much better – and wanting to provide an easy way for people to follow a better path”.

The concept of “smart houses” has been has been going for the past five years and featured a different style of house every year – popping up mostly in the city. One year featured the world’s first carbon-positive house – one that generates more energy than it uses. Another was the most energy-efficient prefab house. “(For 2017) I worked with a builder to create a ‘tiny house’ to show people how you can live happily in a much smaller space,” Tamara explained. “Obviously not everyone’s going to live in a tiny house; it’s just a conversation starter, that small is beautiful, rather than the whole idea that big is better. We don’t sell tiny houses; rather we’re promoting the idea of a light footprint. The tiny house is a vehicle to get that message around”.

As you can see from the pictures, many ways of living ecologically responsibly are part of the Tiny House display. If you missed seeing the Tiny House this year, fear not: the New Joneses will be back in 2018 at the Sustainable Living Festival in Federation Square in February (dates yet to be confirmed), and at the HIA (Housing Industry Association) Home Show at the Exhibition Centre on 5 to 8 April. Keep your eye out for further appearances at local council exhibitions.

IntroducingCalisthenics

ALISTHENICS is a sport involving a combination of activities including marching, club swinging, rod twirling, aerobic exercise routines, singing, dancing and ballet. It is a sport unique to Australia and is strongly dominant in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. In the last 20 years participation has included New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.

Ceres Calisthenic Club began with a married ladies group in 1985 followed by a group of 15 Tinies (under 7 years) in 1987. In 2017 there are nearly 200 girls and young women competing.

The Ballarat Calisthenics Eisteddfod is the finale of the competition season and in 1992 Ceres competed at this prestigious event for the first time and has competed there each year since.

The girls improve by completing the Australian Calisthenics Federation (ACF) pupil skills with examinations offered over eight levels of difficulty. Apart from the commitment to teamwork, solo competitions are held throughout the year enabling individual performances. In 1995 twelve girls competed and in 2017 we had more than 70 girls competing in the solo competitions.

Ceres now has 20 fully accredited coaches with eight assistants undertaking training to become cadets and progress to coaches.

Coaches maintain their skills by attending regular accredited seminars and cadets complete a series of seminars and workshops to qualify for coach accreditation.

Emulation Hall

Emulating Egypt I

N the forever summer of 1966 my two best friends and I would stray far and wide in our quests for adventure. One of the buildings we passed was Emulation Hall, a square, blue-grey edifice in Rochester Road Canterbury that we knew to be a hangout of the Freemasons. Even then our young minds registered that there was something esoteric (though the word did not occur to us) about them. But beyond that it was just a building; we had more immediate things to concern us.

Had we delved into its history we might have found much to intrigue us.

It was built in 1927-28 as a new masonic temple for Emulation Lodge No 141, which alluded to the Emulation Lodge of Improvement (a division of Freemasonry created in 1823 to “emulate” masonic ritual in the form codified by the recently-formed United Grand Lodge of England).

An elusive figure in Melbourne's inter-war architectural scene, its architect Bennet Dunstan Reynolds was not only a local resident but also a lodge member. He had already designed one Masonic Temple in Melbourne. His early career, which encapsulated study and professional experience in both Melbourne and London, was interrupted by the First World War. On the morning of 11 June 1918, after a communication cable between the trench and the Battalion Headquarters had been damaged by heavy shelling, Reynolds spent three hours under enemy fire repairing 24 separate breaks in the cable.

For his "great bravery and determination" he was awarded the Military Medal.

A fact that would have impressed three young boys!

The winged decorations on the outside of the building did not go unnoticed by us, but we did not know they were a design identified as the “Egyptian Revival” and based on the winged sun (a circle flanked by cobras and outstretched eagle wings). The building’s flanks and porch all have tapered sides, to evoke Egyptian temple pylons. The facade of the front wing also incorporates symbolic ornament in pressed cement, namely a scarab (beetle) motif in the central recessed bay, and another between the cornice and the lintels to the pylons and the porch. In this case, the winged sun actually has a terrestrial globe at its centre, inscribed with astrological symbols, rather than the true Egyptian “solar disc”.

As to what it was like inside, we could then only imagine. However, we need do so no longer, for as a heritage-listed building its recent renovation by its new owners (who intend it for use as function rooms) has preserved much of the original décor. The main hall and the lodge rooms are the two spaces of particular aesthetic distinction. The former is a large rectangular space that is divided into five bays by a series of pilasters and ceiling bulkheads. Surfaces are enlivened with decorative mouldings including fluted pilaster capitals, palmette (i.e. palm tree leaf) motifs in the cornices, and other ornament to the underside of the bulkheads. Upstairs, the lodge room has a tent ceiling with moulded cornices and borders that include palmette, papyrus reed bundle and lotus flower motifs, and pairs of Egyptian columns flanking narrow panels of astrological symbols.

Perhaps the Freemasons were not so occult as we imagined in our youth, but they certainly have provided us, through Reynolds’ design, with a building that is significant as an outstanding example of the distinctive and highly unusual Egyptian Revival style.

HRIS Hemsworth is a father and passionate advocate for children; he strongly believes in protecting children so they do not end up traumatised by the impacts of neglect and abuse. He works closely with The Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF) in an endeavour to increase the profile of this critical social issue and has committed his support, time and money to their plight.

The Big Tree App The ACF has an app called ‘The Big Tree’ to support children to have fun while they practise calming techniques and listen to stories that teach them problem solving strategies.

It is specifically designed for children under eight years of age. Featuring the voices of patron Chris Hemsworth, ambassador Nadine Garner, and Chris's mum Leonie Hemsworth, it uses narratives, games and creative activities to help children learn how relationships can support them to meet challenges which can feel overwhelming on their own.

“Research tells us that all children need a strong sense of belonging and connection with carers and family to develop important regulation as they grow up. The Big Tree app is a beautiful and playful way for children to be part of stories that show the importance of connecting to others while solving problems that seem at first to be insurmountable,” said CEO, Dr Joe Tucci.

“The Big Tree app – originally funded by the Telstra Foundation – was initially developed for children suffering from trauma and trialled in our specialist counselling services. We know the app is beneficial to all

children because its themes and activities are universal and easily understandable to them and their carers.

“The central stories about trust, respect and love show children that challenges can be overcome and that seeking out people who care about you when you are unhappy, stressed or confused can help you feel calmer”, said Dr Tucci.

The Big Tree incorporates four core narratives featuring four main characters; Morten the Monster (voice of Chris), Ellen the Caterpillar (voice of Leonie), Ollie the Monkey (voice of Chris) and Sleepy Susan the Cat (voice of Nadine), each of which helps children to consider the emotions and thoughts associated with challenges that come to be resolved through the support of friends.

Each of the stories has an interactive game element that engages children in using breathing relaxation techniques and shared playful activities with their parents and/or carers.

Nadine Garner was interviewed on Channel 7’s The Daily Edition about the app: “I have been involved with the foundation for about ten years and try to be an ambassador to the Foundation.

Unfortunately there is a growing need in our community to reach out to families, carers and teachers to make people aware of what our children are going through behind closed doors – in homes, in schools. It is an unsavoury and horrible thing that happens to kids and is something that people really don’t want to talk about.

“The Foundation and myself are very committed to making people discuss and face it; putting messages out.

And all the positive messaging that we can do at the other end of the abuse is what this app is all about.”

N 10 October at the Box Hill Town Hall, year 10, 11 and 12 Students from Box Hill Senior Secondary College partnered with Youth Employment Support Inc. (YES) to organise and present The YES Inc. Charity Event.

More than 300 people attended the fashion parade and White Paper Couture Exhibition, which celebrated the students’ creativity with their presented collections. Students worked throughout their holidays and many attended workshops at the College to finish their artworks. The result was spectacular with paper being turned into ‘White Paper Couture’ that would make any Paris fashion house proud!

Graduate collections were individual and innovative showcasing Year 12 students' talents. Recycling featured in the parade with upcycled denim jackets and jeans, white shirts were woven and embellished and Year 10 students wowed the audience with their Accidental Tourist Collection (pictured below right and cover).

Students were keen to work in partnership with YES to improve the outcomes of disadvantaged students, to fund education support for young people in our community with low level literacy and numeracy skills. The event has raised enough money to give 60 disadvantaged students the opportunity to work with tutors paid by YES to improve their learning.

YES’s Patron Kay Macpherson (Magistrate Children’s Court of Victoria) opened the Fashion Show and MC for the evening was Cr Jake Keogh from the City of Knox.

Also present were City of Whitehorse Mayor, Cr Denise Massoud, Councillors Bill Bennett, Raylene Carr, Andrew Munroe and Cr Tina Liu. Fashion awards were presented to students in five different categories, with Celine Somers being chosen as the winner of the White Paper Couture ‘Supreme Award’ of $1500 (pictured above).

The $5000 award prize money was kindly donated by Paper Force APP and Direct Paper. Mr Larry Jackson donated $5000; the Whitehorse Community Chest donated $2500 and the City of Whitehorse donated the use of Box Hill Town Hall’s main hall for the event.

he South Camberwell Cricket Club (STC) celebrated its 50th anniversary this year at a gala ball at the Hawthorn Town Hall with over 200 current and past players, wives, partners and friends. At the end of the evening the “team of the half century” was named and acknowledged as the most outstanding 12 players ever to grace the field for STC. Our story began in 1967 when one of the club’s founders called over the fence to his neighbour “does your husband play cricket?” and STC was born. The club’s first game began in less than ideal circumstances when we lost outright. However, this did not deter the players or their spirit as we went on to win two consecutive premierships. Currently STC has won 22 senior premierships and has firmly established themselves as a powerhouse club in the Eastern Cricket Association.

The lifeblood of the club has always been its junior program and over the years STC has won 20 junior premierships – many

club players were graduates of an STC junior education. We have 10 junior teams (aged 5-17 years) participating in the 2017-18 season.

Last season we had an inaugural ladies match to celebrate the club’s 50th. Participants included club members’ mothers, daughters, wives and girlfriends – women associated with the club have worked hard to shape its legacy. A future hope is to have an all-female side.

With newly renovated clubrooms the future of STC looks bright. As always at STC "There's no better place to be."

Youth Education Support aims to turn

Despair into Hope

N

AMED after her feisty grandmother, Irish-born Julia Mosley is a vibrant, charismatic woman with an unstoppable ‘can-do’ approach to life. In May 2009, to assist disadvantaged young people lacking education or training/skills to find employment, she and two friends, Trish Wade and Sue Hamilton, started Youth Education Support Inc. (YES ). Julia is its CEO. About 70 volunteers: retirees from successful professions, business and general careers, assist YES. They help in the YES Op Shop at 55 Mahoneys Road Forest Hill, the admin office, or on a committee. To ensure more young people get the support they need, there are no paid staff and Whitehorse City Council supply their office premises at 79 Mahoneys Road.

Donated sleeping bags are provided to young homeless people; this is managed through their ‘youth care workers’.

Although they would like to sponsor all applicants, those with drug problems are referred to clinics and professionals.

“The many stories we encounter can be heart wrenching, but that we can help where possible gives us a real sense of purpose and the determination to do whatever we can to help the young ones to have a promising life”, says Julia. “To offer an option that may prevent them travelling down the road that leads to drugs, crime and despair. Most encouraging of all is that they work so very hard once they get the support they need.

Knowing that someone believes in and cares about them, can mean everything.” [Ed. Names have been changed.]

Ann: Family breakdown and loss of home left mother, son and 16-year-old daughter Ann living in the family car.

A local mission offered support with showers, laundry and food vouchers. Ann was offered emergency housing and with the help of her ‘youth care worker’ she applied to YES for sponsorship with textbooks, laptop, stationery, clothing and a Myki card to assist her travel to her studies at TAFE. She also needed help with English and maths. We provided paid tutors in both subjects. The total cost to sponsor Ann was around $1700. Ann was very keen to escape the confines of the car, hence, happy to attend school. Although this support led Ann to full employment in administration, she later contacted us to see if we would consider sponsoring her to study dentistry. It was a

good outcome.

Max: Because of his parents’ drug and alcohol abuse, Max spent most of his young life in foster care. Among many challenges there was never any food in the house.

Throughout his teens in foster care Max was rebellious and angry. Although several people tried to help him, it was his brush with a kind policeman that led him to Fay, a very special ‘youth care worker’ who spent 12 months mentoring him and helping him break down the many walls he’d built to protect himself from hurt.

When Fay found Max wanted to take photos, she contacted YES who bought him a camera: it has not left his sight! Finding outstanding subjects in nature, wildflowers and birds, cleared away his aggressive nature; he is now considering a career in engineering although he knows that he needs further study before he is ready but he has hope now and has a new direction.

Jane: Eight-year old Jane and her brother were abandoned by their parents; it was devastating for them.

Welfare agencies assisted with accommodation and schooling but when Jane was a teenager her foster father beat her over a two year period. She had lost contact with her brother and given up hope. She felt alone in the world: no skills, bullied at school, no friends. Teaming up with another disconnected girl, they lived under bridges, facing terrifying and challenging situations; both survived. The world was their enemy; no future hopes. Jane was found trying to steal from the Op Shop.

After many conversations we convinced Jane to let us help her. It wasn’t easy, but we succeeded through our contacts in getting accommodation for both girls.

Devoid of confidence, ‘make-up’ was the only educational course that interested Jane so we sponsored her to do a basic cosmetic course in the city. She did so well that we sponsored an advanced course.

After one year Jane was looking better and felt for the first time ‘life could be okay’ and did volunteer work in the shop which helped increase her general life skills. She’d like to be a welfare worker and may go back to school to study for her VCE. Jane said that the reason she wanted to change her look by using make-up was because she felt her parents abandoned her because she was ugly. BURWOOD WALKS

O

UR nineteenth walk starts, for the first time, from Camberwell and heads steadily south to Malvern East. The length of this walk is approximately 6km, and the “terrain” is gently undulating.

O

UR starting point is in Camberwell Road, 100m south-east of Camberwell Junction itself. From Burwood Village, take the 75 tram towards the city, to Stop 42. This entire walk is on Melway map 59.

We start at J1, beside a distinctive circular brick building, which currently houses a single automated public toilet. It was a much larger toilet, but has recently been downsized and modernised.

From this point, walk south through Lower Reserve past Camberwell Primary School, which is State School no. 888! When you reach the memorial drinking fountain, veer slightly right, walking south beside the tennis courts.

You cannot miss the huge sandstone building “Basilica of our Lady of Victories”, built in 1913. It is beautiful inside and usually open.

From here, walk east along Reserve Road, passing what was the church hall (now part of the primary school). You could spend quite a lot of time in this “precinct” if you wish, but our walk now heads south through the parkland next to the Civic Centre. So far, we have been walking for about 15 minutes, and we cross into Inkerman Road,

still walking south. This road is a through road for pedestrians, bisected by Seymour Grove.

At the end of Inkerman Road, turn right into the shady Alma Road, past a huge hedge and slate roofed house.

(We see many more of these features in Camberwell).

Oaks, paperbarks and a huge Moreton Bay Fig are also notable. Just five minutes later, we reach busy Burke Road. Here, turn left then right into St Helens Road (H2).

An interesting mix of houses and developing distant views to the city are features of this street. After about 10 minutes, take the first street on the left (Widford Street). This is a slightly uphill street and we follow it for three short blocks, to the top of what was known as the Mount Ida estate, then on to the large Anderson Park, and its great views. We will now walk gently downhill south, although wandering around is also encouraged. I walked south, parallel to Widford Street for 10 minutes (about 50m inside the park), passing large eucalypts and a huge playground, and lots of picnickers (on a Sunday afternoon). There are toilets near the Community Hub. As you exit the park, look for Lawson Street (G4) and

Central Park continue south down Lawson Street. Turn right at the second street (Buley Street) and walk west for one block to our second (much quieter and smaller) park – Cato Park, at Lovell Street. Walk diagonally across admiring this lovely park (south-west), with its plantings of native vegetation. You can see that we are heading for busy Tooronga Road (F4).

Sadly, we now have about 10 minutes or so of road walking (also south), but there are “temptations” along the way (i.e. shops). Use the overpass to cross the freeway (F5), continuing south until you cross the Glen Waverley railway line, then turn immediately left into Milton Parade with its peppercorn and plane trees greeting you.

As you walk along this pleasant street you will notice the noise level decreasing! At the end of this street, turn right into Osborne Avenue, which crosses Malvern Road continuing south, to Nash Street (G7). Turn left here, passing the aged care complex. Just 100 m along Nash Street, turn right, into our tiniest park, also beside the aged care village. This park is a little gem, dominated by three large eucalypts, a huge oak tree, a small playground to match the scale of the park, a recently planted Kurrajong tree, and don’t miss the historical information about the settlement of this suburb, Tooronga.

Exiting this park, to the left, you will see another tree-lined street heading south. This is Belmont Avenue (G8). Walk along this street, crossing High Street, into Erica Avenue, but still continuing south. There are several weatherboard houses of note along this section. Halfway along, Erica Street bends, but does not change its name.

Erica Street does finish at Wattletree Road, and if you look to your left, you will see our final destination, Central Park (promised in Walk 17)(G10).

This park is truly huge, with a war memorial surrounded by rosemary bushes, a “Lone Pine”, playing fields, running/walking track, lots of shady trees, a conservatory (locked when I was there), toilets, some unusual plants and quieter picnic areas. Loop around the park to return to the Wattletree Road tram terminus.

There is even an accurate sundial and a “Bottle Tree” near the tram stop, and there are food and drink shops nearby.

The triple tram trip to return to Burwood starts with Route 5 to Glenferrie Road, then Route 16 north to Riversdale Road, and Route 75 east to Burwood.

INDECENT BEHAVIOUR. -:O:A respectable looking lad was charged with behaving indecently. When the constable related seeing the young gentleman standing stark naked in the vicinity of Creswick reserve, it looked as if the court habitues were about to listen to something spicy. When, however, the balance of the story revealed the fact that the lad was but sun and wind drying himself after a dip in the Yarra all sign of indecency and sensation disappeared.

The boy’s story was that his only thought was a good swim, and everything would have passed off swimmingly had not the constable appeared on the scene just before he could get his shirt on. The bench took a fatherly view of the case, and bade the sergeant tell the lad to come back again in twelve weeks’ time. If well behaved meanwhile no more would be heard of the matter.

OLUNTEERING is something that gets under your skin once you start. One of our long-time deliverers has found that out now she is moving out of the area and will soon be unable to continue delivering the Burwood Bulletin.

She sent us an email recalling some of the many happy contacts she has made on her rounds. We share just a few of these: At Pack & Send: “Hello, Sam. New BBs!” Sam with very friendly smile always stands up and comes to greet me.

“How’s your boss?” “She’s fine!”

His boss is his wife!

At Burwood Newsagency: “Hello. New BBs!” They have a special spot – the best exposure at the very front of the shop – for a box of BBs. “Are you happy if I leave some more copies?” They say “Yes, of course! The customers ask for it”.

At Beaurepaires: “Hello. New BBs!” They are usually in their workshop and working. Since they are nice people, when my car needed new tyres I asked them and my car is happy!

I also meet people in the street during my deliveries.

Case 1: “Excuse me, do you live around here? I am a volunteer from Burwood Bulletin. Would you like to have one?” “Oh, yes please thank you.”

ALTHOUGH some may perceive this as ‘political’ content it was long before the current furore in some municipalities about observing 26 January as Australia Day that, while Trawling Trove, I came across an article about our first Australia Day in 1892. This article first appeared in the Box Hill Reporter but was copied by various newspapers throughout Victoria. Note that two Victorian public holidays were replaced by one. It is interesting for more than the public holiday, the origin of art unions being one.

The Box Hill Reporter, Thursday, 24 December 1891 Australia’s National Holiday —:O:— Amongst the numerous faults that members of the globe-trotting fraternity of scribblers have professed to find in the Australian people is that they pay too much attention to pleasure, and have too many holidays in their calendar. As to holidays, it cannot be denied that in Australia such purely British holidays as the birthdays of Her Majesty and the Prince of Wales are more generally observed than in Britain itself, yet the Old Land holds the palm for the number of holidays annually observed.

The only two purely Victorian holidays in our calendar are Separation Day (lst July), and Constitution Day (2nd November), and these the Australian Natives' Association are seeking to have removed from the list of bank holidays because they are purely Victorian, and their observance is opposed to the federal spirits that seeks to sink all petty parochial jealousies in broad national issues that conserve the interests of Australasia as a whole. In place of these two parochial

holidays the A.N.A. have induced the various Governments to proclaim the 26th of January as the one National holiday, in commemoration of the founding of the first British colony in Australia little over a century ago.

Although the National holiday was gazetted as such only two or three years ago, the idea has caught on wonderfully, and various methods for its due celebration have been adopted in different parts of Australia. In many of the inland centres of population in Victoria great preparations are now being made for the next celebration, but nowhere are the preparations on such an elaborate scale as those now being made in Melbourne by the Metropolitan Committee of the A.N.A. This year they have not been able to offer in connection with the art union such attractive prizes as “desirable villas” or free trips round the world on account of the authorities taking steps to prevent art unions where the prizes are other than works of art pure and simple. This action has had the effect of frightening one or two benefit societies out of holding their annual

galas, but the Metropolitan Committee of the A.N.A. have courageously determined to hold an art union in connection with the National celebration, keeping strictly within the law, and at the same time encouraging and fostering Australian art.

They have secured a splendid selection of pictures, which are to be offered as prizes in the art union, the total value of the paintings being £850. This will give some idea of the value of the prizes and every ticket purchased gives the holder a chance for these prizes as well as the right to attend the festivities at the Exhibition Building on the 26th of January, either in the day time or in the evening. The price of the ticket has been fixed at the popular shilling, and all who are fortunate enough to be in Melbourne on that date will get considerably more than a shillingsworth of amusement and enjoyment if they attend the Exhibition Building. For the benefit of those resident in the country the A.N.A. are arranging for the running of special trains at greatly reduced rates from various parts of Victoria.

A vision of harmony A

FTER the fall of the monarchy in Iran in 1979 there was a substantial increase in the number of immigrants coming from Iran to settle in Australia. During the ‘eighties many came because of the deteriorating situation in Iran caused by religious extremity, the ‘eight-year’ war with Iraq and the stop on westernisation in Iran. The Australian government had developed a humanitarian assistance program for Bahá'í people fleeing the religious persecution in Iran.

By the end of the decade the number of Iranians living in Victoria quadrupled. There was another influx of Iranian immigrants to Australia after 2000; mostly skilled and professional people educated in the West. The 2011 census recorded 7446 Iran-born Victorians, the second largest Iranian community in Australia after New South Wales. The 2016 census recorded the figure at 55 650.

In 1983 an independent unregistered organisation was formed to help Victoria’s Iranian community settle in their new homeland. Named the Iranian Association of Victoria, it was meant to celebrate Iranian tradition and culture, help Iranian newcomers find accommodation and work and assist them with health issues. It was replaced in 1991 by the Australian Iranian Society of Victoria (AISOV), a registered not-for-profit non-religious and non-political society. Its vision is to create harmony between the Iranian and Australian communities, celebrate the Iranian tradition and culture, educate Iranians about local laws, the Australian way of life, financial issues, health and well-being and mindfulness. The AISOV also runs a library and a monthly magazine for its members, called “Golbong”.

Associated organisations which provide cultural, social and educational services for the community: • House of Persia – a cultural centre for events; • Australian Iranian Youth Society of Victoria – activities and educational assistance for young people; • Iranian Senior Society of Victoria – activities and assistance for old-aged people; • Iranian Cultural School – an independent and private school established in 1982. Run by students’ parents, the school is a member of the Ethnic School Association of Victoria and teaches Persian language to Iranian and non-Iranian children. It accepts students for Prep and up to VCE level (year 12) and adult classes for English speaking individuals.

AISOV is a registered incorporated organisation, financed by income from cultural events, membership fees, and a small grant from the Australian government; there is no restriction on who becomes a member.

RARE & BEAUTIFUL BIRDS Wonderful Aisbett Collection – private "Zoo" at Burwood

I

N ideal and charming conditions of spaciousness and natural environment Mr. W.T. Aisbett, owner of the Burwood Poultry Farm has assembled in a private park of eight acres in Norwood road, East Camberwell a remarkable collection of nearly 200 varieties of Australian and foreign birds. It is strictly as a collector not a dealer that Mr. Aisbett has built this extraordinarily interesting exhibition of birdlife. He will not sell a single specimen from his aviaries, no matter to what extent any variety may have multiplied in captivity. He will exchange with other bird lovers or he may give away surplus stock, but he is the despair of any collector who covets his rarer birds. He has been collecting since boyhood and all the intricate provisions for his aviaries, fishponds and park lands are his own handiwork. The perfection of natural surroundings is such that most of his birds breed happily in captivity, and as he moves quietly through the spacious enclosures they show little or no fear at his intrusion.

At the entrance to the poultry farm the visitor receives a first impression of the huge extent of this delightful hobby from an immense aviary 100ft. long by 64ft. wide and 25ft. in height. …

From the entrance are visible the two rarest specimens of the collection. Those are the fireback pheasant from Borneo, and the

vulturine guinea-fowl from Africa. Each bird is worth nearly its weight in gold, and Mr. Aisbett is not aware that either variety is represented in any other private collection in Australia or in any Australian “zoo”. The fire-back pheasant inclines the visitor to quote the remark of the man who saw a giraffe for the first time, and still doubted that such a creature existed. It is a blue black and slate-grey bird, the size of common White Leghorns, with a crest of two spatulate feathers. Its beauty is fully revealed when the cock displays his charms to the hen. Then the blue black feathers rise along the back, and a wonderful flame colour glows through the plumage. A single feather, upon inspection, shows black in one light and dull scarlet with a shot silk effect when turned and viewed in another light This amazingly beautiful bird contrasts with the vulturine guinea-fowl “next door”. It is steel-blue and black, with rows of tufted feathers running down the breast, giving it the appearance of being dressed in livery.

Asked to name the rarest birds in his aviaries Mr. Aisbett headed the list with the two described, and added the turquoisine, golden-shoulder, and Stanley parrots, all gems of colour; the scarlet tanninger, and the harlequin quail. A trio of lovebirds – the black faced, Nyassaland, and Fisher's – are not quite as rare, but they are quaintly beautiful, and a pair of tiny Oriental quail, running with the pheasants, are unique in that they cannot yet be classified.

Of the pheasants that strut under the orange trees a glorious

specimen is Groove's pheasant, from Siberia, with a tail 4ft long. Chinese golden and silver pheasants vie with him in splendour of plumage. Chukka partridges from France and bamboo partridges from China are strange inhabitants of the pheasant runs. A rare dusky parrot from South America sits inconspicuously amid a company of Indian ringneck monastic, rock, pebbler, and blue rosella parrots. …

To add to the interest and variety of the collection are a trio of Japanese deer, the male with his antlers just budding for the season; a great red kangaroo as tame as a cat, which answers to the call of “Bill”, a dancing emu which struts and prances in ridiculous antics; and a tiny monkey, a friend of 10 years' ownership, whose chief delight is to accompany her master on his rambles through the parks, and whose chief mischief is to play havoc in the egg bins.

It is impossible to assess the value of this extraordinary collection. No money could induce Mr. Aisbett to part with his treasures. If the aim and ideal of any hobby is the giving of constant pleasure to a collector and his friends, Mr. Aisbett has achieved that ideal. He radiates a quiet happiness amid his pets that is immensely enviable.

NORMAN McCANCE

the author Norman McCance was one of the stars of early radio in Melbourne. He became immensely popular during the second half of the 1920s for his broadcasts of wrestling matches on radio station 3LO, now known as 774 ABC. But his work over 60 years encompassed far more than wrestling. He was the Argus newspaper's State Political reporter for many years and for both the Argus and the

ABC made radio broadcasts of major events such as the first international flight to Melbourne in 1926. For a decade in the 1930s he wrote and broadcast one of the very first morning news programs.

In his later years he became better known as a naturalist, his lifelong passion for animals becoming his profession. He wrote a nature column for the Weekly Times for over 24 years, right up until the age of 81.

Support for prostate sufferers

P

ROSTATE cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in males, with 20 000 new diagnoses each year in Australia resulting in some 200 000 men – and their families – coping with various stages of their prostate cancer journeys. Regrettably each year 3300 men in Australia lose their battle with prostate cancer.

The Box Hill Prostate Cancer Support Group is one of 170 Prostate Cancer Support Groups around Australia affiliated with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and is now in its twelfth year of providing support for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The Group meets at 9:30am on the third Tuesday of each month in the Upton Room at the Box Hill RSL in Nelson Road Box Hill and has a membership of over 30 with 20-25 men regularly attending the monthly meetings.

At the meetings, all attendees are given the opportunity to discuss the current stage of their prostate cancer journey in an environment that is supportive, safe and confidential. The exchange of experiences between longstanding and newer members results in men realising they are not alone as they come to terms with a prostate cancer diagnosis and

resulting treatment.

Although the main responsibility of the Group is to provide support for members, there is also a recognition of the need to improve awareness in the community so that eventually all men will be regularly tested for prostate cancer and the Group hosts information evenings, provides speakers and attends events to provide information to the general public.

OINSETTIAS are the Pound Puppies of the plant world; lovely gifts for Christmas, but by February, they’ve lost their charm and most of their leaves and are bound for the compost.

But wait! Can they be rescued?

Possibly, but it’s a bit more difficult here in Melbourne. Driving through northern NSW and up to Brisbane, they flower freely in the gardens. Our Melbourne climate is colder, but these beautiful plants are worth the effort.

When your Christmas gift is drooping and losing its leaves, it’s time to cut it back and re-pot.

Always use fresh potting mix. If you

are going to try your luck and plant it outside, then choose a North-facing wall to protect and shelter it.

Plant it into a mound of potting mix, so that it is well drained. They will die with wet feet.

To meet with success, your Poinsettia needs sun, shade, shelter, feed, pruning and luck!

Ideally, plant it into a pot so that it can be moved as the seasons change; then bring it out as it ‘flowers’. Poinsettias are Euphorbias – which translates as ‘Rubbish flowers but pretty leaves’ (bracts). As the plant grows, the bracts turn green and become leaves. Most popularly seen in red, they are also available in orange, pink, cream and variegated mixes of the above.

These will grow into a striking bush which flowers for months, so here is a New Year’s resolution for you: save your poinsettia.

Throughout the year, RSPCA Burwood East has a range of volunteer opportunities available at their site.

Reliability and commitment of volunteers are very important.

REQUIREMENTS Requirements vary per volunteer role, however generally volunteers must be: • A minimum of 15 years of age • Able to commit to volunteering for a minimum of six months • Able to commit to a regular weekly or fortnightly shift of four hours or more For animal care roles it is essential to have experience with caring for family pets, or in an animal related area.

Professional experience and/or qualifications are not required, however they are beneficial for some roles.

Animal care roles These roles work on a structured set roster to ensure we have adequate resources to meet the needs of the animals in our care each day. Volunteer shifts are: • One weekly or fortnightly four-hour shift, morning or afternoon, weekday or weekend • Mostly 8:15am to noon or 12:15pm to 4pm Non-animal care roles Commitment requirements for non-animal care roles vary per role. In May each year we have our Annual Free-arm-arama night; a fun family night culminating in a family barbecue, and all girls look forward to performing their free-arm routine. Each June the club conducts a camp (for Subbies, Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors) held over a weekend to enable the coaches to refine and consolidate their teamwork approaching the competition season.

In 1997 a building sub-committee was formed to work towards owning a place with a practice studio and space to store props, costumes and equipment.

This sub-committee worked tirelessly and raised over $205 000 through such activities as walkathons, trivia nights, sponsorships, annual dinners, dinner-auctions, golf days, movie nights, sale of concert programs and raffles. After much negotiation with Local and State Government, in 2008 the Club entered into an agreement with the City of Monash and the Waverley Bridge Club to construct a purpose-built facility at Electra Reserve in Ashwood. The facility was completed in December 2009 with Council committing the bulk of the funds together with substantial contributions from Ceres and the Waverley Bridge Club.

Moving into our new premises in 2010 resulted in a growth spurt in membership both in girls wanting to be ‘calisthenics girls’ and social members, which led Ceres to look to extend the facility and, following negotiations with Monash Council in 2014-2016, we were able to add another practice studio and storage area. Fundraising and strong member contributions allowed us, jointly with Council, to build the extension finished in May 2017.

The Club is indebted to the many parents who take on fund-raising. Over many years the Bendigo Bank Ashburton branch has been a strong financial sponsor and recently presented yet another sponsorship cheque to pay for audio equipment for the new studio and to upgrade audio equipment in existing studios. The Club expects the new studio will cater for its growth in the years to come.

Ceres has a strong family involvement with parents grouping together to make props required and as there are new items each year, this is a never-ending job and their support is greatly appreciated. The club has a trailer which transports props to competitions.

Although but a fleeting stay locally, the Box Hill Reporter made the most of a legendary actress's visit in 1891.

– :o: – This talented lady who is creating such a furore in the city at the present time, and whose fame is world-wide, paid a visit to Box Hill on Monday afternoon last. She was accompanied by one or two members belonging to her company. The party put up at Gromann’s Railway Hotel, where they had some refreshments and remained for an hour. During the time that Madame Bernhardt remained in the hotel she entered freely into conversation with Mr. Gromann and asked him a number of questions having reference to the growth of the district. She expressed herself as being well pleased with the splendid view to be had from the hotel, and thought that the residents had every right to feel proud of their picturesque town. All the surrounding to her mind indicated an entire absence of poverty, and plainly testified that the inhabitants of Box Hill lived in a lard of full and plenty, and were the fortunate recipients of all those comforts which only money can purchase and good and sound health enjoy. Madam Bernhardt made herself perfectly at home and walked about the hotel as though it had been her abode for years. She opened the piano and played a couple of French airs with as much sangfroid as if she were in her native land, and then took her departure in a handsome drag with the rest of her friends.

Doubtless when Madam Bernhardt returns to France she will remember the pleasant hour she spent in Box Hill, where she was free from the gaze of the motley group who are always staring at her when she is driving or shopping in the city.

Sarah Bernhard’s arrival was widely reported around Australia and one vivid account in The Brisbane Courier of Tuesday, 9 June 1891, deposits us at the Princess Theatre with “the greatest living tragedienne”. “… A great crowd assembled at Spencer-street to see her. … I had expected to see a tragic, stately woman; but the “divine Sarah”, though elegant, is sprightly … I am told by people who saw her in Paris that her hair has recently become of a much brighter red than formerly …

“We were so fortunate as to secure seats at the Princess Theatre to see Madame Bernhardt’s first performance in Australia. … The decorations of the theatre are very beautiful, the roof opens, and one looks up at the sky and the stars, while round the dress circle are ferneries with waterfalls. … “‘La Dame aux Camelias’ is not a nice play. It may be honestly described as disgusting. Madame Bernhardt looked amazingly young, not more than 20, in a loose white robe … She has many mannerisms peculiarly her own, such as spreading out her hands with every

finger distended, and of rolling her tiny lace handkerchief into a little ball, which she displays in the palm of her extended hand. … At the close of the first act the applause was simply thunderous. Six times the curtain rose and fell, and the tragedienne, surrounded by bouquets, baskets, and garlands, kissed both hands to the audience, and shook her head over the hopelessness of trying to express her thanks. …

“She acted the death scene in a startlingly original way – standing with her arms round Armand’s neck and her head on his shoulder. Alarmed by her silence, he releases himself from her hold, when she falls dead upon the floor.

With her clinging white draperies about her and her hair loose about her white face she lay there, as the curtain fell upon the greatest artistic triumph Australia has seen. Even the applauding voices of men who did not understand her speech were husky with emotion.”

Have a Camcare Christmas

T

HE excitement of Christmas would not be the same for children without toys under the tree on Christmas morning.

The Camcare Christmas toy room has been an institution in Camberwell since it began in 2012 and hundreds of disadvantaged children will again benefit from the toy room this Christmas thanks to the generous support of the local community.

Under the supervision of Camcare’s Christmas Hamper coordinator Sue Brink, students from Camberwell Girls Grammar set up the Camcare toy room in December. Camcare clients are then able to select age appropriate toys for their children. They are also able to access food hampers filled with Christmas fare to ensure that Christmas day is enjoyed by all.

Camcare is a local community organisation that provides welfare

assistance, counselling and support services for people in need throughout the Boroondara area.

Established in 1976 by volunteers the organisation now has over 160 volunteers and a small paid staff.

The Christmas Hamper and Toy appeal is testament to the generous community spirit that exists in Boroondara.

F there be any truth in the old belief that intervals between the courses at dinner are good for your digestion, then dyspepsia should not quickly overtake members of the Blackburn and Mitcham Younger Set if they frequently practice what they did on the evening of Tuesday 5th inst. In response to an invitation to join in what was called a progressive dinner, about forty-five ladies and gentlemen congregated at the home of Mrs. McNaught, in Gordon Crescent, Blackburn.

Piping hot soup was drunk, then off went the party to the next leg of their diners’ progress.

They brought up, in due course, at the home of the Shire President and Mrs. W.R.Tainton at East Burwood, where the piece de resistance,

in the shape of roast beef and vegetables, was attacked with vigour and completely vanquished. Observing the rules of a balanced diet, now that the good, solid ballast had been stored away below, fruit salad and cream attracted the revellers to their next stop, the home of Mrs. Forbes in Mitcham. The next hop was out to Vermont where Mrs.T.Brockell had brewed the coffee and set out the biscuits.

History does not relate the state of the appetites when supper was partaken of at Mrs. A.E.White’s home in Mitcham Road, Mitcham, after a short social evening – short because the journeyings had occupied a considerable amount of time. Keen interest was taken in the frog race, and the most expert manipulators turned out to be Miss Ruth Gleadow and the president of the set, Mr. Basil Warner. A short bout of community singing put a good edge on the desire for supper. Mr. Warner thanked the hostess for making her home available. He also expressed gratitude to Mr. D. Kinder for donating the meat, and to Mr.L.J.Barelli for the use of an oven to cook the “outsize” joint.
