REAM Stitches began in 2003 at the Anglican Parish of Box Hill, offering sewing skills to Sudanese women who wanted to learn. Over the years the group has expanded to become a multicultural group of women who meet in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

A year ago, the group moved to Box Hill South and now has students from Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iran, Solomon Islands, and Sudan. The volunteer teachers are women with a wide range of dress and quilt making skills.

During school terms the group meets on Fridays at 9.30am at St Aidan’s Church Hall, 10 Surrey St, Box Hill South.

The students make a variety of clothing for their families and last year some of the students and volunteers worked on extra days to complete approximately 80 quilts; 40 of which were sent to Nepal following the earthquake, 20 were given to the Brotherhood of St Laurence to assist efforts with the homeless and another 20 were specially made to welcome Syrian refugee families when they arrived in Eltham. It is wonderful to see the support and cooperation for people less fortunate.

Some students are very proficient and, under supervision, make choir robes and other clergy liturgical garments.

While the women sew, their children are cared for in a playgroup run by volunteers.

This area needs more helpers.

Volunteers must have current police checks and Working with Children cards that are provided by the government and organised by Anglicare, a partner of the program.

The qualitative benefits for students include: improvements in language skills, confidence, dignity and self-respect leading to the enhancement of overall social skills, progress and pride in their achievements.

Friendships are formed and fun and laughter are encouraged as we all learn from each other.

Hartwell railway bridge comes alive

H

ave you seen the new street art murals on the walls under the Hartwell railway bridge? There are scenes from the past history of the Hartwell Centre on one side as well as bushland scenes recalling a more distant time on the other side.

Boroondara Council made Hartwell Shopping Centre its priority for 2017 for Streetscape Improvement works and consulted the Hartwell Residents and Traders Association for ideas. Top priority was cleaning up the railway bridge as well as fixing up the footpath.

Murals were warmly welcomed as a great idea by all and Council consulted the Camberwell Historical Society before commissioning Juddy Roller Collective artist Dvante to design and execute the murals.

Key inclusions were local flora and fauna and the original bushland as well as the steam train from the Outer Circle Railway days.

Hartwell’s history as a shopping centre is represented by the art deco Regal Theatre – once the pride of suburban picture theatres – and the motor repair shop.

It is only in recent years that Burwood Automotive on the corner of Summerhill Road moved, being now replaced by a new apartment block and shops.

Also featured is the American Maid ice cream shop which no doubt many local residents will recall from their childhood days.

Intriguingly the mural also includes the well-known graffiti message: “I'll always miss you Eileen. Farewell S.D. I you.''

Eileen’s friend Donna cleared up the mystery for the Herald Sun in October 2010. S.D. was Shane who evidently two-timed on Eileen and was dumped. Shane tried to get back in her good books without success.

“He chose that bridge because Eileen drove home that way every day from the city and saw it.

“The message didn't work and Eileen went on to meet the man of her dreams and is still happily married and living in a leafy suburb with a gorgeous hubby and a brood of kids. “`From memory, Shane painted the second message `Farewell' just before he moved overseas to work.”

A great story that is part of the charm and history of Hartwell – “the heart of Melbourne”.

The murals are a great innovation by the Council, done with the support of VicTrack which owns the bridge. They serve to brighten up Hartwell and make it come alive.

HE following is from the Hawthorn & Camberwell Citizen newspaper of 16 January 1914. Just months before the outbreak of World War I, a matter causing Melbournians concern was the inflammatory issue of “mixed bathing”.

“Should Men and Women Bathe Together?”

TWO LORD MAYORS ON MIXED BATHING With the summer at its height the metropolitan newspapers are, as usual, discussing very fiercely the question of mixed bathing. Views on both sides are expressed by scores of correspondents and “Everylady’s Journal” has been to the trouble of collect-

ing the ideas of such notable people as the Lord Mayors of Sydney and Melbourne, Archbishop Mannix and Canon Hughes, the Commissioner of Police and a lady doctor, the American, French and German consuls and Mr. “Snowy” Baker, the famous surf champion.

The majority of people asked replied in favour of mixed bathing – within reasonable limits. The Lord Mayor of Melbourne thinks that

“the sea is quite big enough for both men and women to swim in” and his sympathies are entirely in favour of those who advocate mixed bathing, provided they do not overstep the boundaries of moderation.

The Lord Mayor of Sydney, however, whilst heartily endorsing the practice of surfbathing, condemns the too lax oversight of some beaches where indiscriminate bathing is indulged in.

AVERLEY Gem Club has their Annual Exhibition on Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 September, 10am–5pm at Brandon Park Community Centre, 649 Ferntree Gully Road, Glen Waverley.

There’ll be gem traders from Victoria and interstate, a pearl trader from the Cook Islands and an array of gems for purchase in their natural state or set into jewellery. Fluorescent minerals will be on display and members will showcase their collections.

With plenty to do and see, you can spend the whole day at the Exhibition with refreshments, morning teas, light meals and a sausage sizzle. All ages are catered for, with no steps for prams or seniors to negotiate.

There is also the popular Children's Quiz which provides a free mineral/rock when completed sheets are lodged. There’ll also be a fossicking area for children of all ages. Great fun for all.

Founded in 1971, the Waverley Gem Club’s membership has grown to 160, with ages ranging from 9–90. Activities range from field trips,

fossicking for gems and fossils, to cutting and setting gems into jewellery.

Members begin work learning to cut a cabochon, a curved stone with a flat back. They then proceed to silver work, chain making and setting gemstones.

They have six faceting machines and members can also learn carving, lost wax casting, chain maille and wire wrapping.

There is a monthly mineral collection group and their enthusiastic Saturday group aged 9–16 works at cutting gemstones.

THE JAWS OF LIFE or Death Reader Margaret Crutch writes of the sadness that the march of time can sometimes bring

T

HE big jaws of the front-end loader were gnashing their teeth as they destroyed my neighbour’s house. They were so close to my kitchen window that I felt scared they might damage my home too and cover me in glass. I noticed that I was shaking with fear and sadness as I watched the passing of my nearest neighbour. I felt a great sense of loss.

The original owner and her husband had built the house 70 years earlier, when they first met, married and moved to Burwood from Tasmania.

The husband died a few years ago, and recently the wife had moved into a nursing home. She sold the house in order to pay for a room and ensuite at the home.

This morning at 8am the noise started.

There was the sound of engines and heavy machinery manoeuvring through my neighbour’s broken front driveway, which had been widened for the forthcoming invasion of trucks.

The ground shook as the large empty container was moved into position on the cracked driveway. I could hear what sounded like a high pitched scream coming from the crane which was lifting the large container off the back of a truck in order for the rubble to be dropped into it. I covered my ears to block out the sound that reminded me of how alone I am now, without my neighbour next door.

I watched through the window as a home that had been a family’s place of comfort and security for 70 years was sliced into small pieces, to be carted away and dumped into a large pit.

I watched as my neighbour’s precious rare trees and plants were bulldozed and dropped into the tip truck.

The house before and after

I saw her two big rainwater tanks squashed to smithereens. They had faithfully kept her beautiful trees and plants alive during many hot summers.

I saw the long steel posts from outside her laundry window being balanced and accurately dropped into the bin from a great height. I felt my house shake.

I saw running water seeping out of the flattened hot water tank that had resided in the roof cavity bidding me a last good bye. As if it was shedding its last tears of sadness onto the beloved garden.

Our ocean our future S

CUBA diving is an amazing sport. Yes, we would say that – we’re divers. But aside from the fascinating underwater world we are privileged to explore, diving has an incredible power to bring people together.

Unfortunately, it is all too apparent that we have plundered the seas for too long, believing that the ocean would constantly look after us, no matter how we treated it. Of course, humanity is waking up to the raw reality: the ocean has had enough and it’s time for change.

One of the most significant issues facing the planet today is the problem of marine debris and its effect on our marine life. Death by ingestion or entanglement – marine debris is one of the top killers of the marine wildlife who rely on the ocean as their home or main source of food.

Thousands of divers are standing against this and removing litter from the ocean on their dives. These

“underwater clean-ups” are done under a variety of banners, but all with the same goal: to remove the harmful marine debris from the ocean, one dive at a time, whilst educating others about the necessity of doing so, and of ways of preventing the debris initially.

Academy of Scuba (AOS) has for a long time been part of Project AWARE’s “Dive Against Debris” initiative – by performing monthly clean up dives of various sites around the Bay. Recently, we have “adopted” Mordialloc Pier, a dive site with a resident mussel colony as well as seahorses, rays and various other fish. However, the site is also famed for being an underwater junkyard, and our monthly clean ups here are aimed at turning the tide against marine debris.

This would not be possible without our awesome

divers and staff who brave all conditions, meeting with enthusiasm and energy, always ready to bring up as much debris as they possibly can. In the last four months, roughly 45kg of marine debris has been taken out of Mordialloc Pier alone, the majority being plastics and metal.

Dives Against Debris are open to anyone with their Open Water certification (or equivalent) and above, and plans are underway to get more people involved by conducting beach clean ups whilst the divers remove trash underwater.

One of the best things about all of this is watching people come together and be a part of something greater through SCUBA. Our divers create an amazing atmosphere where people are constantly learning and helping whilst just having a good time.

Jane, one of our regular divers and club members, came to AOS initially looking

to buy some gear. She was quickly brought into the AOS fold, discovering the beautiful diving around Melbourne, and is a regular on our clean-ups. She has found that the dives have been awesome – providing an opportunity for divers to hangout as well as to protect our oceans and raise awareness about the environment – literally becoming a treasure hunt for rubbish!

Similarly, Ian, another regular diver and club member who moved from the UK and started his diving here with us, sees diving as a way of finding a community in his new home. For him, the clean-up dives offer a fantastic chance to gain more experience, bond with other divers and do something a bit different, all whilst being free. For others, the clean-up dives are a great way of motivating themselves to dive in winter – understandably the colder water is a turn-off for some! We have divers with highpaced careers who due to their busy schedules are unable to make every single Dive Against Debris, but are always staying in touch and will jump in when they can. Divers like Axel find the clean-up dives a great way to give back and to take some time to reset and focus on personal interests. It’s not surprising: people feel good about doing good, especially when it’s fun and with great people.

As long as there is trash in the ocean, there will be divers removing it. Though an individual action may seem to have little consequence, the accumulative actions of divers worldwide cannot be ignored. The ripple effects are evident, and the AOS is proud to continue to make waves with our awesome divers and staff by Diving Against Debris. a passion

M

ARGARET Landvogt, former Head of Art at Presbyterian Ladies College, lived in Mt Waverley for over 50 years and also taught at Ashwood Secondary College.

She grew up in the inspiring scenery of Cornwall in England, surrounded by wildflowers, lush countryside and the sea.

After attending the Plymouth School of Art she emigrated with her parents and subsequently enrolled in the Victorian Secondary Art and Craft Teachers course

where she met her future husband John.

When Margaret wed John in 1953, married women had to resign from teaching posts although this regulation was changed in 1956. With little time for her own art except for occasional sketching along the Murray River near their Yarrawonga home, Margaret’s creativity was channelled into encouraging their three young children.

The family’s move to Mt Waverley in 1964 provided new employment and study opportunities.

Margaret says of returning to art teaching in the late 1960s: “It was a joy to encourage every student’s unique

expression”. This, along with completing her Diploma in Painting and Drawing in the 1970s, gave a new impetus to her art and by the mid-1980s she finally made the decision to become a full-time artist.

A concern for the environment has been a driving force in Margaret’s subject matter, which has ranged from immense skyscapes to intricate desert landscapes, from abstractions of subterranean strata to the symbolic images of trees; but the heart has always been nature. A concern for the environment is also evident in daughter Kathy’s landscapes, still life studies or life drawings.

As well as being exhibited in Melbourne commercial galleries, Margaret has had over 10 exhibitions at The Highway Gallery. Many of these were shared with her late husband,

painting photographer John Landvogt, who held positions on the committee of the Waverley City Gallery (now The Highway Gallery) and the Monash Gallery of Art. Daughter Kathy Landvogt is sharing the gallery walls with her mother for the current exhibition.

Margaret, now in her mid-80s, lives in a retirement village in McKinnon.

The ‘Essence and Inflorescence’ art exhibition in Margaret’s chosen medium of pastel, is at The Highway Gallery, 14 The Highway, Mt Waverley, from Thursday 31 August to Sunday 10 September (Gallery Hours: Wednesdays to Sundays 12–4pm).

From its humble beginnings in 1967 as an association for parents of children born deaf and blind through Rubella, it has grown into a diverse and dynamic organisation supporting more than 4000 people in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Victoria.

Able Australia is one of Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisations, delivering high quality, person-centred services to people living with multiple disabilities, including deafblindness and those in need of community support services. They employ more than 500 staff and 300 volunteers who are passionate about ensuring every person supported is seen, heard, respected, valued and connected.

Back in 1967, Able Australia was formed by a determined group of parents who believed in the potential of their children with deafblindness. Challenging the lack of support and understanding available, the Victorian Deaf Blind and Rubella Children’s Association, as it was then known, sought to help all children with deafblindness and their parents, in part by securing suitable education and welfare facilities.

Initially, the Association focused on creating resources for parents and friends of people with deafblindness, generating publicity and establishing the ‘Our Story Home Care Program’ in conjunction with the Royal Institute for the Blind.

In the 1970s, the Association opened a residential facility and Special Education Centre in Kew, providing training for people with deafblindness and multiple disabilities. Continuing to prosper through the 1970s, the Association appointed its first professional staff member and directed its efforts towards

providing group homes for long-term residential care. During this time, the Association commenced fundraising which still injects vital funds into its services and programs.

Group homes were opened in Glen Waverley, Moorabbin and Croydon during the ’80s and in 1984, the Association changed its name to The Deafblind Association, to reflect the support it was now offering to all people with deafblindness, not just those affected by Rubella.

In the ’90s, thanks to the hard work and determination of members, donors and people with deafblindness themselves, The Deafblind Association secured greater governmental funding. It was then able to launch Recreation and Community Support programs and opened group homes in Mitcham, Heidelberg and Bonbeach.

The Deafblind Association became Able Australia in 2006 to better reflect its expanding client base, which by now included services for people with multiple disabilities and a unique adaptive technology centre designed to teach people with deafblindness how to communicate through smartphones and other digital forums.

Since then, the organisation has grown rapidly, branching out into Tasmania in 2006 and the Australian Capital Territory in 2011. In 2012, Able Australia established offices in Queensland to support people with a disability and senior citizens in danger of becoming socially isolated from their community. This was followed by an expansion of their Deafblind Services into South Australia, New South Wales in 2014.

AVE you ever wondered what that bright star is called, twinkling majestically in the early evening sky? Do you want to recognise the shapes of the constellations? Ever wondered which of the stars you’re looking at might be a planet?

Have you wanted to look through a telescope? No, not like the ones you see on the balconies of houses along Beach Road – I mean a really huge and serious astronomical telescope?!

If you’ve answered “yes” to any of the above, then you may be interested in the Astronomical Society of Victoria, Inc (ASV).

Anybody with a fascination for astronomy is welcome to join, and for a small fee, you get access to the whole Universe!

Should your interest not stretch that far, you may like to just attend some of the events that the ASV puts on for the public and schools. These are often advertised on the Society’s website (asv.org.au) or on its Facebook page and occasionally may be held at Wattle Park.

The history of the ASV stretches back to 1922. Since that time many prominent members have made worthwhile contributions to the science of astronomy, as well as disseminating knowledge of the science to the general public. It’s the largest such organisation in the southern hemisphere and boasts well over 1000 Australian and overseas members.

Don’t feel overawed by this, as most members are ordinary people with a thirst for knowledge. In fact the range of expertise is very wide: from novices trying to identify a bright star or constellation, to highly experienced observers routinely tracking down very faint and distant galaxies or taking world class photographs of spectacular deep sky objects.

The ASV has many sections that meet members’ special interests. It also offers a telescope loan service, where members may borrow 8-inch Dobsonian telescopes for a period of three months, to help them get started.

The ASV holds its meetings on second Wednesdays monthly at the National Herbarium on Birdwood Avenue, near Melbourne Observatory. They start at 8pm, are open to the public and cost nothing to enter. They feature a guest speaker and a wide range of topics are covered during the year. Concluding with a light supper, these meetings provide an excellent opportunity to meet other members and ask questions. The library is also open before and after the meetings. BURWOOD WALKS

Jells Park

O

ur eighteenth walk takes us to the very east of the Burwood Bulletin “catchment”. The length of this walk is approximately 7km, depending upon how much you choose to wander about! We start this walk in Glen Waverley, exploring Shepherds Bush, Dandenong Valley Parklands and Jells Park, walking in a southerly direction nearly all the time.

ROM Burwood Village, take the Smartbus 903 south to Holmesglen Station, then the train to Glen Waverley. At the bus interchange, take route 737 (going to Croydon) and alight at Capital Ave (opposite the Salvation Army church – Melway 71, H1) and cross High Street Road to the south side. (Bus 736, going to Mitcham, also takes you to this point.)

Three notes about this walk – 1. There are a number of emergency markers along this route. They are also useful for navigation, so I have included several of them.

2. The whole of this walk is well described on Melway maps 71 and 72, so a copy would be helpful. Melway also shows the emergency marker locations.

3. The gallery and cafe at the end of the walk are currently open Tuesday to Sunday. The walk itself takes about the usual three hours, and you should

leave about 15 minutes from the gallery to reach the 753/693 or 754 bus stops. Times for the buses from Ferntree Gully/Jells Road are on the PTV website.

Walk east along High Street Road until you cross Dandenong Creek on a substantial bridge, and look for the entry point into Shepherds Bush, with an information panel (SHE500). Our first boardwalk appears very soon, and the farther you walk south along the track, the less you will hear the sound of busy High Street Road! After fewer than ten minutes, veer right on the main track near the creek. A couple of minutes later you will see an elevated view of Dandenong Creek in both directions, a seat, and a left track to Nortons Park, but continue south close to the creek (SHE506). There is soon a section of “concrete block” track, suggesting that this track can be wet. Shortly, join a much wider track (also going north to Nortons Park) (SHE505), then continue south, with farmland on your left side. There are also doggie drinking bowls provided.

The track will join the Dandenong Creek Trail, but keep heading south, past another information shelter (LIN502), where you’ll see wider vistas towards the hills near Lysterfield. There are also many birds to be seen, including blue wrens, magpie larks, purple swamp hens, dusky moorhens, ibises, white-faced herons, along with frogs calling. Continuing in a SW direction, about an hour after having started, you will cross Dandenong Creek on a large bridge, and reach a T intersection (JEL508).

Turning left, enter (through a gate) Jells Park Conservation Area, with Dandenong Creek now on your left. The wide trail narrows to approximately one metre wide and continues more or less south through flat, swampy wetlands (paperbarks, reeds, etc.). Turn right

at JEL509 to stay beside the lake. Ten minutes into the conservation area you will see a bird hide – well worth visiting (about 100 ibises were nesting when I came).

Another 10 minutes along at JEL512, take the left fork, or continue beside the lake. Either way, you reach JEL513 and the exit gate from the conservation area. About 30 minutes from entering the conservation area, an asphalt track leads to a shelter shed, with drinking water. This is a good spot for a break, visiting the landing, with 180 degree views.

From the landing area, head south again towards power lines, to JEL 504 and JEL503. Keep on the asphalt path south, past a carpark on your right, barbecues, playground, toilets and water. You will begin to hear road noise again, this time being Ferntree Gully Rd. We are nearing the end of our beautiful, scenic and level walk.

Crossing Ferntree Gully Rd is no mean task! I left Jells Park via the three pairs of yellow bollards, and then crossed where I had good vision and a median strip (near Waverley Hill Supported Residence). After you cross, you will see a sign to Eaton Place. Use this footpath uphill past Eaton Place, and, at Palmerston Crescent, you will see a bus stop – the 753 bus goes back to Glen Waverley (693 goes to Oakleigh, where the Smartbus 903 can return you to Burwood Village).

If you have the energy, continue up the service road (five to ten minutes) to a real highlight! The Monash

Gallery of Art is set in beautiful parklands, has a very tasty cafe/coffee shop, and an adjoining library in a striking Harry Seidler-designed building. It specialises in photography, and has free entry. On its western side, there is a pathway through shrubbery to the corner of Ferntree Gully Road and Jells Road. On Ferntree Gully Road, the route 753/693 bus stop is about 100m west of the corner.

Route 754 also goes to Glen Waverley, via Jells Road, and there is a stop 200m north of this corner.

a platinum year for St Matt's

T

HE people of St Matthew's Anglican Church Ashburton are in celebratory mode. This year they celebrate not one, but two, platinum anniversaries, recalling that 1947 was a very special year.

St Matthew's long-term congregation give thanks for seventy years of continuous worship and witness as an Anglican community in Ashburton.

The Church of South India (CSI) congregation celebrates seventy years as one united Church – formed from a group of Christian churches in the year in which their country gained independence from British rule.

Since 2013, the Melbourne congregation of CSI based at St Matthew's has seen a very successful co-habitation develop, with monthly combined services and bi-monthly meetings of the two committees (Parish Council) to mark the anniversaries.

Several special events are planned to mark the anniversaries. The first took place on Sunday 18 June when the Canterbury Singers led music at a combined service. It was delightful to hear older sacred music not used so often these days.

Around the time of St Matthew's day (21 September) there will be a concentration of activity, with a special lecture by Dr M. Clarke and a Jubilee Dinner on Saturday, 23 September – 6pm for 6:30pm.

There will be a combined service on Sunday 24 September at 10am with special guest and preacher, Melbourne's Archbishop Philip Freier. All are welcome.

CCESSIBILITY is not just the latest buzz word in the disability sector, it is a call to action for a fair and inclusive society. One in five Australians currently lives with a disability and we have an increasingly ageing population who may very well develop age-related disabilities over time. Being active and staying engaged will greatly improve everyone’s quality of life.

Imagine what it must be like to be overlooked for service in a clothing shop because the retailer couldn’t see you over the chest high counter; or being unable to access a secure building because the door buzzer was out of reach; or for someone to assume you’re drunk in a bar when you’re stone cold sober but suffer from a speech impediment.

These are real life situations that occur every day in our cities and suburbs.

Travellers Aid Australia, in conjunction with William Angliss Institute, has developed an interactive online disability awareness training program www.dat.org.au for business owners and their staff. The training is designed

to give business operators the confidence to communicate with anyone who has a disability, whether it is in their workplace or in their everyday life.

Travellers Aid CEO Elias Lebbos says, ‘Our organisation promotes independence by enabling people to engage and participate in everyday life. In our experience, many of the accessibility issues that people face can be rectified through increased awareness, through training and through service providers having the confidence to communicate in a meaningful way with their customers who live with a disability’.

Monash Council Community Update New plan for animal management Council is reviewing how to improve animal management in Monash and has asked the local community to provide their views.

Our Community Survey Monash 2021 & Beyond found that: » 29% of respondents are dog owners and 15% are cat owners » 39.4% of 868 respondents believe it is very important for Monash to have at least one fenced dog offleash area » 83.66% of respondents believe that residents who fail to register their pets should be fined.

These are a friendly introduction to the Society and may answer more questions over a cup of tea or coffee and lots of astronomical chit chat. An enormous 20-inch telescope at the rear of the lodge is used on those evenings provided the sky is clear.

The Society has close ties with Melbourne Observatory in the Botanical Gardens opposite The Shrine, keeping some of its telescopes there and offering members, and the public, an opportunity to look through them on a regular basis. There is a charge for non-members.

The ASV also owns a country property of some forty acres in central Victoria where you’ll find skies dark enough to rival any location on earth. The Milky Way can be so bright there that it casts a shadow! Two events open to public are held there in March and December, but members can go and stay onsite for as long as they like, drinking in the universe until they’ve had enough!

Some of the best observing anywhere in Australia takes place there through a gigantic 25-inch telescope, however there’s an even larger 40-inch telescope being delivered early next year. Furthermore, for the membership’s benefit, work on a new observatory and accommodation block commences shortly.

All in all, anyone with an interest in astronomy should become familiar with the Astronomical Society of Victoria. The joining fee is $20 (juniors exempt) and a full membership is $75 pa. Concessional members are $55.

N Saturday 28 October Parkmore Primary School invites you to their inaugural outdoor Moonlight Cinema featuring the animated movie Sing, starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey.

Starting at 5:30pm there’ll be performances by the choir and musicians (keyboards, guitarists, violinists), a whole school flash mob and acoustic entertainment by Parkmore’s performing arts teacher and local musician, Mr Sam Besmehn-Burt.

For the hungry there will be a variety of hot food: roast potatoes, souvlaki and more. During the movie there’ll be an alcohol bar for the adults and for the young or young at heart: a cupcake stall, candy bar, popcorn and soft drinks!

To keep everyone entertained before the movie, there’ll be sports clinics (tennis, cricket, football) organised by local community groups and giant garden games (connect four, noughts and crosses, Jenga, under 3s climbing/ play equipment).

There’ll also be an art auction of seven directors’ chairs painted by students (which includes premium movie seating for the auction winners).

So grab your family and friends, a picnic rug and cushions and make your way to 38 Jolimont Road Forest Hill on 28 October for a great evening relaxing in front of the big screen.

HE small house at 1 Church Street Burwood has come a long way since May 1987 when Box Hill Council offered it to the committee for community use. The Burwood Neighbourhood House (BNH) invites the local community to celebrate its 30th birthday on Wednesday 20 September.

BNH started with small groups, a grey brick building, roller door garage and two small bedrooms.

Although our infrastructure is small, we offer 59 activities and operate day, night and weekends. Playgroups in the newly renovated garage have supported many mothers.

BNH has offered health and well-being classes; supported youth and children; Work for the Dole clients, Uni student placements, Centrelink, ESL, TAFE workplace training and more.

A “responsible use of alcohol” course is delivered to 475 students in five schools and a free Graffiti Removal Kit is available to

the community. For a safer community, BNH is redeveloping Neighbourhood Watch. BNH is the Australian registered office of Knitted Knockers, and the home base of the Burwood Bulletin.

I

N my little suburban garden, I like to keep the flower beds fairly small. At their widest, mine range between one, or one and a half metres. That way, I have a chance of reaching the back of the bed for pruning and weeding. Any larger, and whatever is at the back has a good chance of being in the ‘Out of Sight, Out of My Mind’ category.

I like to break up larger spaces with a path. Paths invite you to walk into the garden and experience a view from a different angle. My tiny garden measures 5.5m deep x 14m wide out the back. It’s 3m wide at one side and provides a pleasant alfresco place.

The photograph illustrates the point where the back garden curls around to the side of the house.

In my path, I have used crushed rock to a depth of about 15cm. To prepare it, I first dug away the soil down to the clay base. Then I used a watering can to apply a strong

weedkiller, before laying a double thickness of weed-mat, which lapped up the edge of the garden bed. This ensures that the soil and the stones stay separate.

The path creates the illusion of distance, which is further enhanced by the placement of a mirror on the brick wall at the end of the garden.

This doubles the size of the garden, because it’s not immediately obvious that we are looking at a reflection.

I’ve disguised the mirror (a simple $25 wardrobe mirror from the Reject Shop) by surrounding it with an arch and placing a small picket gate across the bottom. By doing this, I’ve managed to create the impression that we are looking into the distance – beyond the wall, along another path.

Yes, not smoke and mirrors – this illusion is all paths and mirrors and now you know the trick, it’s simple!

NCREASING lifespans mean that most people will now spend onefifth to one-quarter of their lives post-work. So what to do after work?

There are plenty of warnings about managing income so one can live comfortably for thirty to forty years in retirement, but what about the loss of purpose and loss of a social group that often comes with the end of paid work?

Since 1992, U3A Box Hill (29 Strabane Avenue Mont Albert North) has provided a pathway for seniors to maintain their mental, social and physical wellbeing when they leave paid work. The University of the Third Age is an international organisation that employs a self-help model to provide affordable educational and social programs for seniors. Volunteer retirees share skills and knowledge garnered over a lifetime. The tutor of geology one day may be an oil painting student the next.

Run entirely by its members (currently more than 550), U3A Box Hill Inc. provides over 60 courses for a $50 annual membership fee.

These range from physical fitness (FeldenKrais, Zumba, Walking, Nordic Walking, Lawn Bowls), languages (Spanish, French, German, Chinese Language and Culture), Craft, Board Games, Cryptic Crosswords and Book Groups, to many academic courses such as Current Affairs, Music Appreciation, Philosophy, Writing and Literature. There is also series of short courses. U3As are the main provider of technology education for seniors, so Know Your iPad, Smart Phone and Tablet classes are a feature on U3A class schedules.

But for many members, it is the social side of membership that is most important. This communal aspect of the organisation is very relevant at a time of life when long-term friends and partners may be lost. Monthly restaurant visits, picture and theatre nights as well as wine clubs are always popular.

OOD and garden organic wastes make up a large proportion of our waste. Diverting these organics could reduce greenhouse gas emissions arising from landfilling, extend the life of landfills, produce beneficial soil conditioners and reduce costs.

Organics could be recovered by introducing food collection either via a separate bin service or within the garden waste bin.

Such options would require changes to current collection and infrastructure systems. An opportunity to do this will arise in 2018 when the current green waste disposal and recycling contract expires.

Audits of general waste bin content indicate considerable potential recyclables and food organics could be diverted from landfill. Boroondara garbage bins contain about 35% potential divertible material and recycling bins contain around 8% contamination.

Waste avoidance and minimisation is the centrepiece of a 5-year plan endorsed for public discussion by Boroondara Council.

Harrison's Song

is worth a thousand words

AE Bonney featured a very special guest on her program, It’s OK To Not Be OK, on 19 June. Harrison Craig, winner of the second series of The Voice Australia in 2013 came in to the 3WBC studios to talk about his recent Kings of Vegas tour at the Palms at Crown Casino.

Rae’s son, Rory, who attends Laburnum Primary School and Will, from Mildura West Primary School were also in the studio to ask Harrison some questions and to read on-air with Harrison his recently released book, Harrison’s Song. He released the book to help children to know that they can overcome any situation/hurdle in their lives to achieve their goals and dreams. Before appearing on The Voice, Harrison suffered from a severe speech impediment for many years but, the moment he would begin singing, it disappeared.

During the interview, Harrison dedicated the Tom Jones song, She’s A Lady, to Rae in recognition of her support. Harrison also paid tribute to his mother for her support and encouragement and spoke of how overwhelming his success has been for him and his family, which includes younger brother, Connor.

It was a wonderful hour with Rae, Harrison, Rory and Will. Following the program, Harrison signed copies of his book and CD Kings of Vegas for his fans who were waiting in the Box Hill Town Hall Hub foyer.

EW bans prohibiting outdoor smoking in dining areas came into effect across Victoria on 1 August.

The bans affect outdoor dining areas of restaurants, cafes, take-away shops, and licensed premises in areas where food is consumed on footpaths, balconies and in courtyards.

The legislation, outlined in the Tobacco Amendment Act 2016, states smoking is banned: • at premises such as restaurants, cafés, take-away shops and licensed premises, including

courtyard dining areas and footpath dining • within 10 metres of a food vendor at organised outdoor events.

• in an outdoor drinking area that is within 4 metres of an outdoor dining area, unless separated by a 2.1 metre high wall or a 4 metre buffer zone between an outdoor dining and drinking area.

Smoke-free areas include: • entrances to indoor children’s play centres, public hospitals, etc.

• childcare centres, kindergartens, preschools and primary and secondary schools • outdoor recreational areas, playground equipment, skate parks; sporting venues during under-age sporting events

walking in two worlds at St Oswald's

S part of Reconciliation Week on Saturday 3 June, St Oswald’s Anglican Church Glen Iris, welcomed Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr. Born in the Northern Territory, she is a member of the Ngangiwumirr language group. Dr Ungunmerr was the first indigenous teacher to work in the Northern Territory and later became a principal at a local primary school.

Dr Ungunmerr’s work with young people led her to question how they were coping with living in ‘two worlds’ and in 2013 she established the Miriam-Rose Foundation

to continue her work advocating for experiences allowing indigenous youth to learn to ‘walk in two worlds’ – Aboriginal culture and mainstream Western culture. This is achieved through educational grants allowing young people to attend schools and university in various states.

The afternoon was conducted as a Q&A session with the Rev. Glenn Loughrey, followed by questions from the floor. The church was full and all were very humbled listening to this activist, educator and artist.

OUISE Wilson is the winner of the 2017 Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies Don Grant Award for best Australian biography with a family history focus – Margaret Flockton, A Fragrant Memory.

Her first books followed her mother’s Huguenot and Cornish ancestors, then a chance discovery that she had a First Fleet convict among her forebears led to her Robert Forrester book.

About having joined a Genealogical Society of Victoria Writers’ Group, Louise says: “One of the most rewarding parts of doing family history is when you are able to share with others some of the fascinating stories you have discovered.”

Her advice to all those who aspire to write their own family history, “don’t wait – but be prepared to get addicted!”

“THE FATHER OF POWER FARMING IN AUSTRALIA”

I

became interested in learning more about Daniel Harvey after going on a Box Hill Cemetery walk led by Jack McLean. I asked Jack about Daniel Harvey’s grave as it wasn’t on the list being used for the walk. Jack didn’t know where the grave was; however, I was able to tell him as I had discovered it one day wandering around near my own parents’ grave.

I talked to my brother-in-law Stan Finger, as Daniel Harvey was his uncle. Both the Harvey and the Finger families had holiday homes, next door to one another at Seaford, where we all had great summer holidays. Little did I know how clever and well-known Uncle Dan was and how important a man he was to become in the scheme of things in Box Hill.

Daniel Harvey was born at Mysia in the Mallee, on 8 August 1876. His father was a farmer and he and his wife had eleven sons. Dan, the fifth son, must have had an early interest in farming and farm implements. He trained as a blacksmith and served his time as an apprentice at Korumburra. When he came to Melbourne he worked for a Mr Kurt Hillman in Doncaster, then the main fruit growing centre for Victoria, and later managed the business when Mr Hillman died.

The business was located opposite the Doncaster Hotel on the corner of Wetherby and Doncaster Roads, where Dan became the local blacksmith and farrier.

He began to forge implements for the orchardists,

who were not too keen to venture into this kind of work themselves. Daniel moved to Union Road Templestowe where he set up his business. It was here that he met Maud Adams, whose father Mark was a carpenter in the Templestowe area. They married and had two sons, one of whom died at an early age. The other son, Hugh, later came into the business. In 1911 Daniel moved his business to Box Hill and set up a foundry in Whitehorse Road, on the site where Le Pines Funeral Parlour now stands. The family lived opposite the factory in Whitehorse Road, one block west of Graham Place. The empty corner block was used for storing the steel used in manufacturing the implements.

The factory site comprised offices (on the Linsley Street corner) and the Iron Foundry. Behind the offices were the blacksmith forges, steel storage racks, the guillotine for cutting the steel, then the assembly section for cultivators and the section that made dehydrators. There was storage and the grader department behind the foundry (two storeys: the bottom for cutting up timber for the graders and the top to make and assemble them).

Designed by Dan, the graders were simple affairs where the apples ran along the top and gradually fell into the right size openings, graduating from small to large. A far cry from the sophisticated machinery which adorn the sheds of today, but they were successful, and soon paid for themselves in time saved.

Daniel Harvey was keen to extend his business and became interested in making frames for drying fruit in the Mildura area and for the tobacco industry. He had a permanent stand at the Royal Agriculture Show, where every year he had his inventions on show for farmers to view. These implements included: • Plough Grape & Berry Hoes • Tractor Plough Citrus Spring Tooth Cultivators • Road Plough Reversible Vine Plough • Mould Board Plough • Petty Disc Stripping Plough • Tractor Cultivators • 2–Way Reversible Disc Cultivators • Tandem Discs Patent Power Lift • Drag Harrows Single Furrow Plough Dan liked nothing better than for someone to come to him with an idea. He would make it up and then sometimes pass it on to his brothersin-law, Bert and Stan Finger, to try out.

His first patent, I believe, was a low-slung sledge-type Spring Tyne Cultivator, which had a single straight disc cultivator at the front and an adjustable cultivator at the rear.

It could be set to run the plough under the branches and up to the butt of trees, while the driver and horse walked in the middle of the row. Horse-drawn implements were built and sold until after World War II, when tractors appeared on the Australian Market. Dan then developed and patented the first Power Lift Tractor Plough: hence the title “The Father of Power Farming in Australia”.

In 1962, Daniel Harvey Limited was taken over by Gerard Australasia, manufacturing from West Footscray. They were in turn taken over by Horwood Bagshaw, an Adelaide firm which eventually folded in 1972.

The industry became more and more sophisticated and the Harvey implements became obsolete. However, there were still a number of small packing sheds using Harvey products in 1995.

Dan died on 22 December 1960 and is buried in the Box Hill Cemetery. His grave is in the south west corner, 13 rows up the main track from the gate on the left, Grave number 712, Roman Catholic Section. The front of the grave stone has a brass plaque with this inscription: “Daniel Harvey, of Box Hill The Father of Power Farming in Australia” FRANCES WARREN (Edited by Chris Gray)

There was a great sense of loyalty among the Harvey employees, some travelling by train from as far away as Essendon, Northcote and Brunswick. These were the days of an early morning start and a late finish, long hours pre 40 hour week.

Daniel Harvey Ltd. were targeted by the Communist Party in an attempt to incite the workers to adopt a “Go-slow Policy”. This was an attempt to put pressure onto the industry to attain a wage increase and 40 hour week. The Communist Party's action was not supported by the workers at Daniel Harvey Ltd, as was reported in the Box Hill Reporter of 5 April 1946.

AD Cat Theatre Company’s original musical One Life, No Regrets! by Burwood playwright/director Joanna Buddee, was an extremely enjoyable trip through time.

Opening New Year’s Eve 1959 we met Johnny, played by a very talented Steven Saxton, singing and jiving to Goodbye 50s, Hello Future. When Johnny met Beccy (Trelawny Kean) their traditional 50s doo wop love song, I’m Falling, had the audience swooning.

In scene 2, 1969, Johnny and Beccy, still in love, have had a daughter, Katie, but by scene 3, 1979, Johnny and Beccy’s marriage has disintegrated in one of the most powerful songs of the musical, He’s/

She’s Changed. Kean's beautiful voice and impressive acting skills were really on display here.

Kadey McIntosh was perfect as Sarah – a character everyone loved to hate; you would not want your men anywhere near her! McIntosh’s comedic timing was impeccable. Mathew Charles Arter played Sam, one of Sarah’s long-suffering husbands. Arter’s solo, I Surrender, where he would rather go fight in the Vietnam War than be at home with his vicious wife, was absolutely spine tingling.

Always getting a laugh was Gazza, played by Laneth Sffarlenn, a loveable Aussie larrikin who had many amusing quips and a hilarious 80s-inspired song,

Johnny and Beccy’s daughter, Katie, was played wonderfully by Tamzen Hayes; indeed, the whole cast embraced their parts well, including nine local children from Hartwell Primary School.

The costumes co-ordinated by Claire Lugger were fabulous. Many were actual vintage clothes, which is why they looked so authentic. And the music, written by Joanna Buddee and Marianne Duane, captured each era well.

With the final song of the show, No Regrets!, the message was clear – “Love, laugh, forgive and forget, life is too short to live with regrets.”

S has been pointed out in previous issues, the Burwood Bulletin’s Community Notices section is almost at capacity – we have reduced all notices (except Probus) to four lines to give more space and will not be increasing the number of pages allocated to this section.

We have previously asked for providers’ (and readers’) assistance by informing us of any errors, changes, wrong phone or mobile numbers, etc., but have had very few such notifications – that could mean that all our listings are correct!
