T is with sadness that we farewell our indefatigable editor Raine. Issue 140 has proved to be her final one and it is largely due to her efforts that the Burwood Bulletin has developed to be the smoothly-run machine it is today.

She will be continuing to contribute as a writer, and several of her articles grace the pages of this issue, including "Meet Constable Gordon", "Having a Colonial Ball" and the story about 3000 Acres.

We welcome Suzsi Mandeville, who joins us this issue with the first of a series for gardeners. Enjoy!

OUTH with a Mission (YWAM) is an international non-profit organisation that is strongly connected with Melbourne’s eastern region through its charitable activities and historical link to Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint.

YWAM Melbourne – based in Surrey Hills – is a part of the larger YWAM global network. The scale of YWAM is impressive, encompassing operations in more than 1100 locations – including 20 in Australia – in 180 countries, with over 18 000 staff and volunteers. The organisation is dedicated to helping others and teaching Christian values.

YWAM undertakes many substantial charity activities in Australia and the Pacific region. One of its largest undertakings is the YWAM medical ship that routinely travels to Papua New Guinea administering medical services, training and community development. Other work includes projects in Aboriginal communities, community development in Fiji, and work in schools and orphanages in Thailand.

Closer to home, YWAM Melbourne’s director, Edwin Bakker, believes that “making an impact in our local area is essential”. His Surrey Hills team is involved in several charitable activities across Melbourne, from operating a food truck to feed disadvantaged people in St Kilda every week to assisting in homework programs for disadvantaged youths after school in Richmond. YWAM “encourages youth to be active and help other organisations to reach out to refugees and homeless”, said Bakker. “Our passion is to celebrate people and to help them recognise their gifts and talents, to equip them to use these talents in life.”

As an example, YWAM’s Island Breeze ministry nurtures talent, with consequent positive flow-on effects. The Island Breeze program focuses on supporting Australia’s Pacific neighbours; this gives participants in the program opportunities to develop positive skills, starting with what they are most passionate about. Island Breeze Rugby – which is heavily involved with the local Box Hill Bronco Rugby Union teams – is extremely popular with many Island Breeze participants. In the case of the program it “assists people to become role models in their community”. For participants with more artistic qualities, the Island Breeze Production organises musicals and productions that celebrate Pacific Island culture.

Bakker believes one of YWAM’s most important functions is in the fields of education and training, stating “YWAM is involved in training young people for charitable missions both local and overseas”. The Discipleship Training School is a full-time program lasting about six months. During this time students are able to develop themselves and their relationship

with God and religion. The program is divided into a “lecture phase” and an “outreach phase”. The first phase is conducted in the classroom and focuses on theory. The second is practical, and designed to equip students with the fine skills, theory and organisational capabilities required to participate in charitable activities. At the end of the program, participants are awarded nationally accredited certificates. YWAM in Surrey Hills celebrates different cultures, and accepts students from all over the world to study discipleship in Australia.

YWAM operates out of some of Surrey Hills most historic and notable buildings. The collection of ecclesiastical buildings along Kent Street date back to the early 1900s; they were established by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart as the St Joseph’s Home for Destitute Children. It was from the initiative and finances of St Mary MacKillop – founder of the Sisters of St Joseph – that the move to Surrey Hills was arranged. The orphanage housed and educated thousands of Victorian children over its eight decades of operation. The Sisters eventually moved out of Surrey Hills in the early 1980s to a new location in Flemington. There was a real danger that the property and its historic buildings could be demolished if sold to developers. Luckily the property was bought by YWAM, who began operating there in 1983. YWAM preserves not only the original buildings but the legacy of St Mary MacKillop and the Sisters by their focus on charity and devotion to Christianity.

OR 100 years, Box Hill Wesley Calisthenics Club has been a place for girls to meet, dance and just have some fun. From a modest beginning in 1915, when Edna Watkins started the club, it has grown to be a vibrant and active community staple.

We are lucky enough to be known as the oldest calisthenics club in Australia (and 1950 Fitzroy Comps because competitive calisthenics is only performed in Australia, we like to say that we are the oldest club in the world), with no signs of slowing down. Our membership fluctuated over the years, but strong friendships and a love of the sport has kept the club afloat.

Things have changed in the past 100 years, since the then Box Hill Methodist Girlsážż Gymnasium required all students to wear a modest, black knee-length pleated skirt, long-sleeved flannel blouse, ample bloomers and black stockings with white shoes. Nowadays, the girls wear elaborate costumes for their performances on stage. Leotards with plenty of sequins are the staple outfit.

The type of dance performed has also changed, with more gymnastics and varied types of dance added into the routines.

Calisthenics is a unique combination of gymnastics, ballet, figure marching, jazz and singing. The girls perform a rods routine that consists of twisting and contorting a thin metal rod with their arms, which forms quite a striking image when performed in unison. Older members also use clubs and perform an aesthetics routine using a skirt and more fluid, ballet-like movements. This variety gives the girls a chance to improve on many different skills and keeps both the classes and the concerts interesting and entertaining.

When asking the members of Box Hill Wesley what they love most about their club, two things are repeatedly mentioned. The first is the costumes: all little girls love a bit of sparkle and our leotards provide that in spades.

The second is the most prevalent, and that is friendship. Over 100 years we 2nd Rods & Freearm have had many members come and go, but it is the friends made while at the club that remain forever. The club is not a particularly competitive one; we usually compete in up to two competitions per year on top of our annual concert, while concentrating on the community values and friendship created through dance.

Head coach Sharon Leverett has a large part to play in the fostering of these friendships and is fortunate enough to have gained some of her own throughout her 35 years at the club.

She arrives every week, both Wednesday and Thursday nights, with a smile on her face and ready to coach. After being tasked with creating the ideas and choreographing all of the items, it is even more impressive that she dedicates two nights a week to teaching the teams. Sharon, along with her wonderful assistant coaches, is able to find the perfect balance between having fun in a class and actually learning the work. The importance of this to the success of the club should not be lost.

We welcome members of any age or skill level, with no experience required. One of the favourite aspects of calisthenics is that it truly is for anybody. If you would like to gain some fitness, some fun and some friends, Box Hill Wesley is the place for you.

A Pockett full

M

ANY Melburnians will be familiar with the names if not the garden design work of the likes of William Guilfoyle and Carlo Catani. Thomas Pockett has largely been forgotten, in spite of his modest but significant opus of executed designs of municipal gardens in the eastern and south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Pockett was born in 1857 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

He started gardening at the age of 10 at Ireton House, a relatively modest house in Cheltenham, and did farming and market gardening work for his father, a market gardener.

At the age of 16 he took a position at Parker’s Nursery in Tooting (London) and at 18 was appointed plantsman at Lord Falmouth’s Mereworth Castle. At 19 he became foreman in the gardens of JH Elwes at Colesbourne Park, a large estate near Cheltenham.

Thomas and Louisa Pockett emigrated as newlyweds to Australia in 1878, apparently after an uncle suggested that there were good prospects for gardeners in Victoria. Their first two years in Victoria were financially difficult, with a paucity of private positions as gardeners and fluctuating markets and conditions for market gardening. Pockett worked in Hawthorn in the early 1880s, and later at ‘Kenley’, a property in Kooyong Road, Toorak.

In 1884 after the Victorian Horticultural Improvement Society’s autumn show, The Leader of 10 May 1884 wrote,

‘As regards the chrysanthemum (flowers) … we question if finer flowers than those staged by Mr. Pockett could be seen anywhere’. He also won the society’s first prize for the ‘best arranged and kept gentleman’s garden within 5 miles of the Melbourne GPO’.

In about 1886 the family was able to buy land and build a house in Malvern Road, Malvern, intending to use the land in particular for the growing and production of new chrysanthemum cultivars.

After Pockett relinquished his position at ‘Kenley’ in 1888 he was invited to prepare a plan for ‘improvements’ to the recreation reserve to the rear of the Malvern Shire Hall.

The Malvern Evening Standard of 16 June 1888 reported the deliberations of the Council committee.

The reserve ... bids fair under the attention of the committee … to come as near being ‘a thing of beauty and joy forever’ as any earthly garden can be ... Plans of the proposed improvements … and arrangements of flower beds, grass plots pathways etc. drawn by Mr. T. Pocket[t], of Malvern, [were] adopted as those to be carried into effect. The decorative effects of a fountain are not to be forgotten … The [total] cost thereof is to be about £490.

Pockett was appointed curator, and the Malvern Gardens in High Street were officially opened in December 1890. He designed these, Malvern’s first public gardens, with serpentine paths and without straight lines or formal angular beds. A row of English oaks was planted on each side of the drive, and there were plantings of palms, elms and flowerbeds. The lawns and

plantings were arranged so that long views could be obtained through the gardens. His design included a lily pond with a grotto and fountain located around an existing natural spring.

The design used traditional 18th century English landscaping principles of light, shade and perspective including large trees and vistas of expansive lawn.

have largely disappeared. The enduring and notable aspect of his designs is the general layout (which has generally been retained) of the parks and his tree selection, including both exotic trees and Australian natives where appropriate.

Thomas Pockett’s designs for another eight public gardens are referred to in various publications. In the Malvern area he did the original designs for Central Park (1906) and Ardrie Park (1918). He was lent to a number of city councils over the years, including to Hawthorn Council for Central Gardens in Glenferrie (1896) and St James Park in Hawthorn (1896), and to Kew Council for the Alexandra Gardens in Kew (1905–06) where his brother George became first curator. Closest to us, Central Gardens and the Alexandra Gardens, are well developed and maintained, and retain the diversity of their original tree plantings and avenues of trees.

At the age of 88, he was awarded an OBE in 1945 for services to horticulture. From this distance this seems well overdue given he had an international reputation for work on chrysanthemums, and his garden design and development had been locally recognised before World War I. WILLIAM ORANGE

Having a colonial ball . . .

HE Melbourne Colonial Dancers (MCDs) were formed in 1974 at the height of the Folk Revival when some locals felt that surely there were dances to go with the newly popular tunes and songs.

Searching English, Irish, Welsh and Scottish Traditions, they gradually built up a collection of dances and started running bush dances and displays. The late Shirley Andrews and Peter

Ellis, both dance historians awarded OAMs for their work, collected dances and tunes brought to Australia during the colonial and post-colonial period. These collected dances and tunes have been added to the MCD’s repertoire.

In the 1980s Jill and Bruce Watson set up the Melbourne Colonial Dance Band where anyone who wished to play could join and they taught them to play dance music. Over the years, others have taken over running the band and nowadays the aim is to learn and play the collected dance tunes.

Coral Eden became the Leader/Dance Coordinator of MCD and in 2003 Beginner Dance Classes for MCD started at the Ashburton Uniting Church Hall.

While other dance groups are folding due to

lack of attendance, MCD’s beginner classes have brought many people to this form of dancing – it is very social and partners are not required. The next eight-week series of classes commences on 25 August.

“The music is joyous and the entire experience puts a smile on one’s face”, says Penny. Geoff says he started the classes after watching a video of people dancing at a ball.

In 2004 monthly dance classes commenced in Ashburton every third Thursday from 7:30–10pm.

Balls are held twice a year, in June and November.

Many of the dances are taught in the beginner classes. At the balls students get dressed up and dance the night away as their forebears did.

HE Reporter of 11 July 1889 – with a banner proclaiming circulation in ‘Box Hill, Surrey Hills, Canterbury, Balwyn, Camberwell, Doncaster, Burwood, Blackburn, Mitcham and Ringwood’ and cost one penny – contained a delightful anecdote.

I endeavoured to find a link with the phrase ‘going around the bend’ and Yarra Bend1, but apparently it’s a very old saying – disappointing. When I was growing up in Hawthorn, a similar phrase referred to Kew.2 The article is a window to earlier times when such an event warranted 300 words in The Reporter:

A FIT SUBJECT FOR YARRA BEND. About two o’clock on Sunday morning a man, whose name has not transpired, called at the police station, Mitcham, and aroused Constable Gordon out of a comfortable sleep. When the constable opened the door, the man asked him to direct him to the station master’s residence, as he wished to get a parcel that had come for him by the last train. Constable Gordon tried to reason with the man, and told him that goods were not delivered on Sundays, and that it would be a stupid thing for him to wake up the station master at that unreasonable hour.

The man would not take no for an answer, and at last Constable Gordon directed him to the station. He pilotted [sic] his way to the station master’s residence, and after knocking for some time he succeeded in attracting the attention of Mr. Leitch, who thought that something serious must have occurred down the line. The man accosted Mr. Leitch in an offensive manner, and demanded his parcel, which the station master very properly refused to give him, telling him to call for it at the proper time.

He then told Mr. Leitch that he could get his parcels at any time from country station masters, and that he had a lot of influence at his command, which he would use in getting Mr. Leitch discharged if he did not forthwith deliver him his parcel. This had the effect of arousing the indignation of Mr. Leitch, who threatened to lay hands on the

fellow if he did not at once clear out. When he saw the turn things were taking, and believing “discretion to be the better part of valor,” he at once beat a hasty retreat, and in doing so forgot to apologise to Mr. Leitch for his indiscreet and impudent act.

Finding the good Constable Gordon intriguing, I sought more about him on Trove – apparently Mitcham was an unruly place prior to Mounted Constable William James Gordon’s arrival when the station opened in 1888. He was the first member to have charge of the newly-formed station.

Clearly a much loved figure, following his decision to take a promotion and move to Yarra Glen in March 1894, the community turned out to honour him. The evening, interspersed with musical interludes, ended with the playing of the National Anthem; the room was then cleared and “dancing indulged in to a very late hour”.

Some of the fascinating phrases used in the article no longer exist, such as ‘pile on the agony’3 and ‘long spared to labour’.4 The Reporter’s article of 27 April 1894, headed ‘Presentation to Constable Gordon’, described the community assembled in Mitcham’s Recreation Hall to present Gordon “with an expression of favor upon his removal from among their midst”.

Raising laughter from the audience, the chairman said his only objection to the constable was that

whenever they met, he invariably “swore”. However, he’d seen him conduct cases in the court and, “unlike some members of the force, never exceeded his duty in trying to ‘pile on the agony’, but rather inclined to leniency. He took it that that was one of the highest praises which could be given a man”.

To loud applause the community presented Gordon with a “handsome tea and coffee service, and hoped he would be long spared to labor in his new sphere”.

Perhaps the community was well aware that their police force did not have it easy in the 1890s. Not only were they the lowest paid in Australia earning six shillings and sixpence a day, they had to wear uniforms made from thick material totally unsuitable for hot Australian summers. They were also required to wear them every day, even when they weren’t on duty!5 RAINE BIANCALT

Raising youthful voices

S

OUTH East Community Link’s SEAAC team delivered a powerful National Youth Week event at the Oakleigh Hall on 8 April which brought together 70 young people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds.

“Hear our Voices” was the focus of the youth consultation with young people engaged in round table discussions about issues that concern them, including community safety, education, employment, volunteering and recreation. The questions and discussions generated from the tables were then fed back to a panel of specialist services for their responses and feedback. These included Victoria Police, City of Monash, City of Greater Dandenong Youth Services Team, City of Kingston Youth Services team, Youthlinks, Salesian College and South East Volunteers.

SEAAC Youth leaders were provided with training in leading and facilitating discussions, as well as taking on roles including MC, kitchen support, facility set up and closure procedures and contributing to cultural performances and story telling.

Participants enjoyed a delicious lunch, a hip hop dance workshop and discussions with other young people and service providers. Overall, this event provided a safe space for young people to discuss important issues, gain new friendships and skills and have fun during this last day of the school holidays.

A huge thank you to the City of Monash Mayor, volunteers, young people and the specialist services who participated in the event and made it a meaningful event for all.

Eisteddfod

a culture of creativity I

N 1978 Howard Friee, then Councillor with the City of Waverley, and his wife Frances, had a vision to “create” a premier music Eisteddfod on par with those of the cities of Dandenong, Footscray, Hawthorn, Manningham, Mordialloc and Ringwood. A music teacher herself, Frances knew that a local eisteddfod would help young musicians to develop their potential.

Howard and Frances worked tirelessly for an entire year, seeking sponsors and volunteers, and organising piano, strings and wind competitions, and so in 1979 Waverley Music Eisteddfod was born.

The Eisteddfod started in a very small way, but gradually expanded with new sections such as school choirs, vocal solos and instrumental competitions.

The Waverley Music Eisteddfod is now a successful, prestigious and vibrant part of Melbourne's cultural calendar.

With the ongoing support of the City of Monash and our valued sponsors, we have continued Howard and Frances Friee's vision to this day. Our annual Waverley Music Eisteddfod, held in August in the City of Monash is a major local music event that draws competitors from all over Melbourne.

Some Eisteddfod competitors who have gone on to highly successful musical careers include: Amir Farid, pianist; Slava Grigoryan, guitarist; Ewen Bamble, Cellist and Elena Xanthoudakis, soprano.

The Eisteddfod is organised and run by a dedicated volunteer committee who are assisted by a band of volunteers during the competition, many of whom have been with us a long time. Another EDGE success

HE super Easter raffle run by the Edge Community Fund was drawn on Thursday 24 March at 3pm outside the Ashburton Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) by branch manager Kathy Koulouris. We greatly appreciate the annual support of the traders in High Street and Warrigal Road, Ashburton, and also thank the Ashburton Bendigo Bank for its ongoing assistance.

All funds received are used to support local schools and to help people needing financial assistance for school activities. The fundraising through the raffle was very good, and more than $2500 was received.

The Edge Community Fund is a voluntary group, and we thank all those who bought tickets in the High Street and other venues. Congratulations to the winners of the raffle.

New attractions shine in Burwood Village

V

ISITORS to the Burwood Village were greeted by stunning sunshine on Saturday 30 April for the 6th annual Burwood Village Festival, where the streets came alive with the sounds of laughter and the bright colours of balloons and banners.

New attractions were plentiful and brought people from far and wide. The Royal Flying Doctors Flight Simulator enthralled and the trauma teddies donated by the team at the Boroondara Lions Opportunity shop were gratefully received.

Bringing some of the city’s trends to the eastern suburbs was the new Prohibition food truck, which displayed some delicious foods, including the popular butterbing cookies and crème brûlée doughnuts.

A huge success also was the Kids' Entrepreneur Market, which brought the local youth together in a fantastic display of inventive business ideas and creativity.

Jane Thom, owner of the Rustic Table Deli, said “It was amazing to see so many families out and about”. She put on fantastic antipasto samples, and burger sliders to keep the punters going and fuelled up all day.

The inaugural pie eating competition’s star-studded lineup included local MP Graham Watt and Traders Association President Travis Bateman (with son). The task at hand was to eat as many pies as possible in 6 minutes. Congratulations David from Ready Steady Go, your winning performance was made easy with the best tasting pies ever from the Pie Market.

The music and entertainment kept the vibe alive all day, with local dance and singing groups getting the crowd involved with catchy sing-alongs and funky dance moves.

The Burwood Village Festival is run by the Burwood Village Traders Association, with the support of the City of Boroondara and RAMS Home Loan Centre.

Local resident Michelle, a customer with one of the four banks, was looking to refinance in order reduce her repayments. “I had a home loan of $200K, a personal loan of $25K. I unexpectedly had my work hours reduced and my salary. I organised to meet with my banker to roll both loans into one.”

UR thirteenth walk goes to visit Burwood’s very own university – Deakin. In particular, we will be looking at their most interesting “sculpture walk”, which was set up by the University Art Gallery. We will, of course, include “bush” and parklands to complete our circuit from Burwood Village. Depending on how

much “exploring” you do, this walk is approximately 7km.

IRSTLY, however, a special note is needed.

If you, like me, are not familiar with the university campus, you will have a much richer (and more successful) experience if you have a copy of the guide to the sculpture walk. You can collect a copy from their gallery, which we pass on the walk, but it has limited opening hours (10am–4pm Tuesday to Friday).

Alternatively, you can easily download the guide by searching for “deakin sculpture walk”.

Bring this guide with you.

You start the walk in Burwood Village at the south east corner of Burwood Highway and Warrigal Road (Melway 60 G6). Stroll east down Burwood Highway for five minutes to the entrance to Burwood Cemetery; this cemetery has been here a very long time, since 1857. Browse as you walk through this quiet place, perhaps admiring views over Burwood and Mount Waverley, and the many fine trees, from the western fenceline.

BURWOOD WALKS

Deakin paths

Exit at the south east corner, then turn left into Highbury Road. After 50m, cross Evans Street into Harker Street and walk on the southern side under its large eucalypts. At the end of Harker Street walk almost straight ahead, crossing two streets (Cromwell and Ireland) into Tudor Street, where you will see an unusual sculpture at the far end of this street. It is a geological history of Victoria (more or less) with a large pendulum. There is a plaque to read.

Head north along the Gardiners Creek Trail for ten minutes or so, noting the tree plantings, Koorie carvings and paintings, homage to the drive-in theatre, the orchard heritage, and to some cypress trees whose stumps have been carved. Cross Burwood Highway at the lights and walk east to the second entry heading north, near the Gardiners Creek Reserve sign, where you will have the creek reserve to your left and an oval to your right. After walking for five minutes you will come to a bridge, but do not cross this bridge; instead, head north east past the cricket practice area towards “Building P”.

(There are public toilets behind the clubrooms on the main oval.) The Art Gallery is beside Building P. You have now been walking for about an hour.

Using the university’s sculpture walk guide, you can now start wandering around to see how many of the twelve sculptures you can find (I found ten). Nearby Corner Café may be a place for a break. Once you find sculpture 11 “Echidna” (noting its shiny “nose”, perhaps indicating a status similar to lion sculptures in other countries), start walking back towards the point where we came across the oval near the cricket practice area. It is now time for some more “bush”. Again, do not cross the footbridge, but continue north (then east) along the banks of Gardiners Creek. There are two more or less parallel tracks. Either is OK, but do not cross the creek yet. The track beside the creek is more popular, but the “inland” one is shadier.

After about 15 minutes the two tracks do join, near another bridge. Here you will cross the bridge (signed to Wattle Park), walking north past a small playground, then gently uphill through a right of way to a street (Cadorna St). Turn left along this street, and after walking for 10 minutes you reach Elgar Road. Cross this road carefully, and enter Wattle Park.

Once inside Wattle Park, it is best to turn left and then right – away from the traffic and beside the remnant vegetation protected area. There is an informal path bearing north west along the fenceline through a most attractive area. You will pass another crossing, but keep walking roughly north west (although aimless wandering in Wattle Park is encouraged!). There are also playgrounds and picnic facilities available not far uphill from where we are walking. About 20 minutes after entering Wattle Park, you should emerge onto Riversdale Road. To your right (east) lie the Wattle Park shops, and slightly to your left along Riversdale Road there is a smaller group of shops, including a chocolate shop and a milk bar. Either way, you will find a bus stop for the Smartbus 903 (going to Mordialloc) to take you back to the start of our walk.

HE Burwood Evening VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) Club was established in 1993 and we still have two of our founding members with us today. We have two main purposes: one as a friendship group and the other as a fundraising arm to The Smith Family, a charity that helps disadvantaged children all over Australia with their “Learning for Life” program. This program sponsors children for their school requirements such as books, stationery, uniforms and excursions. Each student has a Learning For Life coordinator who can assist with specific learning programs and liaise with parents and with both primary and secondary schools.

Programs include I can read and I track (this is for older students), and are provided to the children to develop their skills in literacy, numeracy and mentoring student to student. For example, The Smith Family Learning Clubs have trained volunteers to assist students out of school hours with their homework and also assist with mentoring. This is where VIEW clubs and corporate sponsors come in. VIEW fundraises and takes on as many students as we can afford to sponsor. The Burwood Evening VIEW Club has sponsored two students now in their final year of senior school – one since primary school, who has been given the opportunity to take an apprenticeship.

“What happens when they get here?”

was looking for work for a long time before here.

I was feeling very sad each day, not eating. Now I am so happy I have someone to chat with, I am learning so much and I am getting paid!”

These words come from asylum seeker Jana, whose new lease on life is due to two locals, Crystal Fickers and Trishay Trada asking the question “What happens when they get here?”: ‘they’ being asylum seekers. Crystal and Trishay not only asked, but sought to become a part of the answer.

To this end, last September they opened From the Art, a café and handicrafts shop in Yertchuk Avenue, Ashwood. Its aim is to be as socially and environmentally responsible as possible. They hire asylum seekers exclusively and have introduced them to the local hospitality industry. They’ve managed this with the assistance of the Brotherhood of St Laurence, which runs an employment and integration service for those who

have gained asylum in Melbourne.

Café employee Jana, with her uncle, had tried unsuccessfully to leave Sri Lanka by boat and ended up in jail for a week (her uncle was incarcerated for a year) before eventually being able to leave – alone – for Australia. She spent a long and difficult couple of years before moving to Melbourne and finally meeting Crystal and Trishay.

Although young, she had a similar small café in Sri Lanka, and so was able to bring skills to her new situation where, she says, she now feels “part of the family”.

TEPPING into his art gallery in Toorak Road Camberwell, one gets a glimpse of his world – one of colour, texture and extreme adventure.

“Painting for me is about fun, exercise and stimulation”, says Kim. “I’ll put on a record by The Doors, or maybe Led Zeppelin, turn it up loud, and just go for it. I paint fast, slapping it on quickly, working up quite a sweat and I don’t stop ’til it’s done. I get into a rhythm and don’t overwork it. A lot is done with my pallet knife, but sometimes I just use my hands. My paintings are quick, loose and free, which is particularly good when you’re painting abstracts and semi-abstracts.

“While the bulk of my paintings are in oil, I also use acrylics. I find most of my inspiration is due to my restlessness so I push the boundaries in terms of subject matter and technique, while I create with mixed media which allows me to produce three-dimensional pieces as the desire takes hold.

“I was never the sort of guy who could sit in front of the TV each night, which I found quite boring rather early on. Instead I would go into my garage at night and create. I’d get lost in my arty dreams, without which I probably wouldn’t have been able to produce the diversity of work I have.”

Kim is one of those successful artists who has been able to turn a creative pursuit into a living with apparent ease.

“I’ve been a professional artist for 34 years now. I actually started out doing sculptures in 1982, and I only had to sell one or two pieces each week to do better than my day job was giving me, so it made sense to make art full time.

I moved into painting in 1986, which has since grown into my true passion.

“In the early days before the Internet, I sold my work through Home Shows in Melbourne and Sydney, and later in Art Fairs. These avenues were both good and bad for me in that while I was able to sell my creations, I had to deal with people who either had no knowledge of art at all, or art connoisseurs, both of whom could be difficult for different reasons. As a result, I became somewhat withdrawn and guarded when facing off with the public. It’s not easy selling yourself, so these days I just try and let my art do the talking.”

And Kim’s artwork does talk out loud to anyone who listens. You’ll find his works hanging in private homes across the country, but also in such places as the Royal Society of Melbourne, the Australian Tourism Association in Canberra, the Golden Gate Hotel in Shanghai, and the Lamborghini dealership in New York.

“When people and companies commission me to do a work for them, the inspiration varies according to their brief and the size of the piece requested. While they usually have an idea of subject matter, they can also choose a theme from areas I have already worked such as Alice in Wonderland, Burke & Wills, and racehorses in their silks. All in all, I’ve over 300 original paintings people can choose from.

“I’ve always gone down the obscure path rather than the traditional path where I’m creating something for the express purpose of selling it.”

History repeats itself O

N Thursday, 9 August 1951 the temperature dipped so low that it snowed in Burwood and surrounding areas. Our photo (top left), supplied by Alan Tanner, shows two of his children with two other local children rugged up for the snow on the corner of Baker Parade and Dunscombe Avenue, Ashburton.

Mrs Rosalind Arvidson (nee Whelan) remembers her trip to Ashburton Primary School that morning. She had to walk to school every day; but on the day the snow fell, Rosalind was in for a treat. Her mother backed the little black Morris out of the garage and gave her a lift to school. Homes are where the heart is Adam Garvey spoke to Burwood Bulletin about his life in Real Estate.

You were born in Burwood. What led you into the real estate business?

There is a legacy: my father founded Garvey & Company Real Estate in 1981 in Through Road. After growing up in the local area and completing my degree at Deakin Burwood, it was straight into the family business at the age of 21. I grew up with real estate; it is in my blood, and our company is now the longest standing independent boutique agency in the Burwood area. I love dealing with locals who originally bought or sold with our company over 30 years ago; that repeat and referral business is a big part of the company’s success.

Being involved in selling properties must have its highs and lows. Any instances stand out as being memorable?

I could write a book. I remember a purchaser who prior to settling on a property in Box Hill South wanted the garden fumigated by the vendor because she saw a spider in a tree, or the day the verandah collapsed while I was calling for bids at an auction in Surrey Hills. Some vendors do become very nervous prior to an auction; you need to remind them you have conducted hundreds of auctions and that they are in good hands.

How has the local real estate scene changed over the years?

The area has evolved. The suburb still caters for families, with excellent transport, shopping, and parklands and local amenities. There has been continued investment growth and development in Burwood revolving around education. There are many opportunities in Burwood for those looking to invest or live in the suburb. Remember, Burwood is almost 10 kilometres closer to the city and much more affordable than Glen Waverley!

What, in your opinion, makes a good real estate agent?

A genuine commitment to your client. You need to be there for them during a campaign as it can be a stressful time for both buyers and sellers, and for many people it is the biggest transaction they make in their lifetime. And often you need a great deal of patience and empathy; however, ultimately people expect leadership and elite performance.

Have you any advice for prospective property buyers/sellers?

Ninety-five percent of people will deal with a real estate agent when buying and selling. Make sure the agent you engage when selling your property is genuinely committed to your success – not just going through the process of a transaction. The same goes for when purchasing: find an agent who is interested in achieving your property goals and servicing your needs.

Apart from its two Melbourne centres and one in Seymour, TA runs a Travel Training Program and has an active Medical Companion Program in Melbourne to assist regional and metropolitan patients to get to appointments smoothly. There is a buggy service available at Southern Cross and Seymour stations to meet people and escort them as required and if details are provided, they will be met upon their return. TA also has mobility scooters and wheelchairs (both electric and manual) for hire.

Moving on after BREAST CANCER

HERYL Webster was diagnosed with breast cancer three times. Positively, she “chose life”: she decided to have a mastectomy.

Cheryl has devoted the past 40 years to giving to the community – this year marks 20 in her role as Manager of the Burwood Neighbourhood House. With her many years experience in Community Development and Community Awareness she teamed with Julie Weaver (then President of Burwood Neighbourhood House) in September 2013 to launch the concept of Knitted Knockers Australia as a Community Project of Burwood Neighbourhood House. And now, in her role as President of Knitted Knockers Australia, while still maintaining her position as Manager at BNH, Cheryl has helped to develop and expand the Neighbourhood House Community Project with branches now up and running in all states of Australia; there are 29 to date. These are managed by wonderful volunteers who simply “want to support the Breast Cancer Survivor”. This community project has been sourced for interviews by major TV networks, the Herald Sun, five major magazines, and many articles in local newspapers across Australia.

volunteers to knit prostheses and whilst most knitters are women there are also a few men. The knitters are sent a kit containing soft, one hundred percent 8-ply cotton yarn purchased by the organisation solely from the Bendigo Woollen Mills. Now with numerous branches Australia wide, they have supported over 5000 women to date.

Knitted Knockers has had many requests from hospitals and McGrath Breast Care nurses, and has sent a shipment of prostheses to the Solomon Islands, two shipments to the Breast Cancer Networks in Vietnam and India, and many to New Zealand. Cheryl is supporting a Port Moresby group to develop this movement in PNG. This is another success story for the Burwood community. Of course the downside is leaf mould. I recommend picking off the yellowing leaves as soon as they appear then spray them.

Try any product from the supermarket marked Leaf Mould and Black Spot, but for a cheaper alternative, buy the concentrate from a nursery and mix it up yourself. This must be done regularly. I try to do it once a fortnight but manage once a month – the roses have survived!

Tip: I have discovered that digging lime through the soil is a great preventative for black spot. Roses don’t like an acid soil and thrive with lime added. If the bush is strong, it has a greater resistance to pests. Since doing this I’ve had less mould and fewer aphids. Now I also shake the lime powder over the bush and leave it for half an hour before watering it in well.

This has had excellent results for me.

000acres is unlocking vacant land across Melbourne to grow food and build strong communities. Their aim is to bridge the gap between people who want to grow food, and local councils and other organisations who hold the keys to vacant land.

By connecting people to land, resources and each other, more people can grow more food in more places by building holistic and sustainable cities for generations to come by changing how vacant land is used. It addresses the gulf between traditional grassroots methods of growing food and city planning policies.

Ellie Blackwood, Projects Manager at 3000acres says: “It can sometimes be difficult when people want to start to grow food or to find a site or know who to talk to for access or planning approval.

There is a lot of empty and under-utilised land across Melbourne and beyond.”

“Even within such a residential area as Boroondara, it is so easy to spot a vast amount under-utilised space once you start looking for it. Pockets of land on nature strips, empty blocks, water ways, alley ways and roof tops”, says Ellie.

“Within 18 months we now have seven gardens in various sizes and forms around Melbourne, including two in the eastern suburbs of Hawthorn and Kew. We have engaged countless community members of all levels of gardening experience, from horticulture pros who want to broaden their gardening experience out of their own backyard and into a community, to complete novices who see communal gardening for the wealth of information and skill sharing that it is.”

With funding from VicHealth and support from The Australian Centre for Social Innovation, 3000acres is also supported by numerous local councils across the Melbourne area as well as lawyers, activists, educators, developers, and all kinds of people who care about fresh food in urban areas.

“

UNDERSTANDING our natural world” is the motto of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria (FNCV), the oldest club of its kind in Australia. The FNCV was founded in 1880 by a small group of nature enthusiasts who met regularly to ramble through fields and collect specimens.

They advertised in The Argus newspaper, inviting interested people to meet and form an association to study nature. The inaugural meeting was held on 14 June 1880, when 56 people were elected as members. Within a year, the membership had almost doubled, and has continued to grow ever since; currently the Club has about 800 members.

From its beginning, the Club has drawn its membership from the ranks of amateur naturalists and professional scientists. It is unique in providing a venue where professionals and amateurs can happily mix on equal terms. For more than 60 years there has also been a vibrant involvement by young members. Members formed the Hawthorn Junior Field Naturalists Club in 1942; it has since been incorporated into the FNCV as the Melbourne Juniors Group.

The idea for forming the Club had come from a desire to increase our knowledge and understanding of the natural world. This soon led to the realisation that much of Australia’s flora and fauna is unique to this country, and should be conserved. Protecting and conserving the environment quickly became a major concern for the Club.

The FNCV was responsible for the establishment of Wilsons Promontory National Park in 1898. Since then it has played a part in every major conservation movement in Victoria, the fight to save the Little Desert in the 1960s, the BoxIronbark Forests, and the Marine National Parks. The FNCV has given rise to a number of other conservation groups, including the Victorian National Parks Association (formed in 1954); the Native Plants Preservation Society (1952); and the Australian Plants Society (originally Society for Growing Australian Plants) (1957).

Until the 1940s, the Club met at the Royal Society’s city building. Then, for about 50 years it rented space at the National Herbarium with its regular monthly meetings in Mueller Hall. In 1996 the FNCV purchased the former IOOF building in Gardenia Street, Blackburn, and has operated from there ever since.

The FNCV is a very active organisation. It has seven special interest groups (SIGs), each of which focuses

attention on a particular part of the natural world; there is a SIG for the study of animals, plants, insects, marine life, geology and microscopes. There is also a group just for children (the Juniors), as well as a ‘Day’ group which caters for people with an interest in nature but don’t wish to go to evening meetings. All of the SIGs have monthly lecture meetings, and some of them also have a monthly excursion, usually on a weekend. In a typical month there can be as many as eight meetings when there is a talk given about some aspect of the natural world, as well as four or five excursions. All meetings take place at the FNCV Hall, Gardenia Street, Blackburn. Both meetings and excursions are open to the public. A small charge is made for nonmembers, to cover insurance costs.

In addition to the meetings and field excursions, since 1884 the Club has published a scientific journal of natural history. The Victorian Naturalist is published six times a year and distributed throughout Australia, and to a number of overseas countries. Since 1991 a monthly newsletter, Field Nats News has been published, as a means of both informing members of forthcoming events and reporting on recent meetings and excursions.

From signal boxes to works of art

HROUGHOUT the City of Whitehorse local artists are transforming VicRoads traffic signal boxes into works of art, and at the same time are making an impact on graffiti.

Box Hill Community Arts Centre organised five of their talented tutors and members of the Box Hill Art Group to paint the boxes in various locations within the City.

“The objective of the project is to enliven our streetscape and combat graffiti in a creative way,” said Whitehorse Councillor Helen Harris OAM. Just some of the painted traffic signal boxes can be seen at: Burwood Heights Woolworths, Burwood Highway; the median strip, corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street; the end of the Box Hill tram stop, Whitehorse Road, Box Hill; Station Street and Highbury Road corner, Burwood; the corner of Canterbury and Stevens roads, Forest Hill; Burwood Highway near Benwerrin Drive, Burwood East.

“There has been positive feedback from the artists involved and the community and the artwork has added a sense of community spirit and pride to the city and a splash of colour to the urban landscape”, Cr Harris said.
