Member Newsletter October-November-December

Page 1

Dear Members,

As we reflect on our incredible Centennial year, I want to sincerely thank each of you—members and staff alike—for contributing to such a remarkable season. Together, we’ve accomplished so much, from hosting the Vermont Amateur Championship to enjoying fun Centennial events like the Hickory Stick Tournament and our Celebration party.

On October 4th, I had the pleasure of participating in this season's Yellow Ball Tournament. It was a fantastic day and a meaningful way to honor our dear friend and former BCC member, Jeff Davey. A big thank you to Mark Boucher for coordinating this member-organized event each year. It’s an occasion I truly look forward to!

I’d also like to give a big thank you to Amy Feeney, who has generously donated her time to create beautiful floral arrangements from her garden for the Grill Room and around the Clubhouse. Amy, your contributions have truly brightened our spaces, and we are very grateful!

As we approach November, please keep an eye out for 2025 membership renewal information. All members will be automatically renewed in their current category and payment plan. If you’ve received a notice regarding your 2025 membership category eligibility, you’ll be renewed accordingly. Renewal information will include a change request form for those wishing to adjust their membership category, request a leave, or add a junior golfer. If you don't want to make any changes, no response is needed.

As we transition into winter, I encourage everyone to take advantage of our holiday traditions and upcoming social events, including Kids Movie Night, Santa Brunch, Trivia Night, and the Member Holiday Party! Be sure to check the Club calendar for dates and registration details and note any closures during Thanksgiving and Christmas. We’re also excited to announce new dining specials and a new Grill Room menu starting Tuesday, November 5th.

To our members heading out for the winter months, we wish you all the best and look forward to welcoming you back next season! Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our Club Here’s to another great season ahead!

Warm regards,

Dear Members,

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearing the end of October, and Joe will be covering the greens soon. 2024 has certainly been a year—and season—to remember, and with the completion of the Vermont Girl’s and Boy’s High School State Championships, our Centennial calendar of very special events has come to an end. Congratulations to member Taylor Moulton, a senior at Rice HS, who won her third straight individual state title! And a big thank you to our Director of Golf, Steve Hosack, who worked with the Vermont Principal’s Association, and the VGA, for bringing these tournaments to BCC.

I recently had the honor of hosting the President’s Dinner, which included nine past leaders of the Club, spanning four decades, along with spouses and significant others. I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable experiences in my 6+ years at BCC. Chef Dan prepared a very nice meal, and Aleksa set us all around one large—and beautiful—table. In my brief remarks, I offered personal highlights and/or our accomplishments that make me particularly proud, including:

The Golf Course. Superintendent, Joe Martaniuk, and his team, have (again) outdone themselves and elevated their already high bar for outstanding conditions and performance.

Hosting the Vermont Amateur Championship. Seeing the golf course seriously challenge Vermont’s best players and be playable after the remnants of a tropical storm blew through; BCC winning the McCullough Cup for the first time since 2004; and hearing my 17-yearold son’s name (Teddy) announced on the first tee as a competitor. 50 NEW MEMBERS from January 1st! This is a tremendous accomplishment, and one that deserves to be celebrated, along with the fact that half of this total are under 40, and many with young families.

Christopher Ackerman, Annie Strout, and Ralph Strout Ackerman. Within our group of new members comes my favorite (recurring) moment of 2024 which, has been the Strout Ackerman family playing golf together; and while families playing together are not unique at BCC, there has been something about seeing this family, especially Ralph being pushed along in his stroller, that has resonated. At the December 2022 meeting, it was questioned and suggested that we do not do enough to attract younger members, and especially young families. It was something that I, along with the Board, have taken seriously, focused on…and when I see Chris, Annie and Ralph on the golf course, I can’t help but smile.

As we close 2024, look to 2025 and beyond, I see Burlington Country Club as vibrant and gaining momentum every day. I hope you do, too.

All the best.

Dear Members,

Great news from your membership committee: we have welcomed our 50th new, or returning member, since January 1st. That’s right FIFTY! The ambassador program, worked by Jason and staff, and all the positive vibes being spread by all of you are contributing to this unprecedented momentum and growth.

I keep saying if “we can get them to pull in the driveway…play a round, have a bite, sit by the pool for an afternoon…”, the course, amenities, and our attentive and professional staff will show them why our Club is so special!

We truly have a gem of a Club, and whether someone is a serious, or not-so-serious golfer, or is simply looking for a great community, the best course in Vermont, BCC is where they should be.

Now, on to the future…

The Centennial season, all the special events, the fantastic condition of our course, our great staff, summertime in Vermont, hard work, membership pride, and good vibes…all of it combined to attract new members—and we need to keep it going. We really feel we are onto something, and people are seeing the value and experience a BCC membership delivers.

Please keep up the enthusiastic promotion of our Club. Your membership committee and staff are here to help. If you have a friend or associate that is interested in membership, get their name and contact info to Jason or a membership committee member and we w

There is no time like the present! We are all ambassadors. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Sincerely,

Please join the BCC Staff, Board of Directors, and Membership Committee in welcoming the following new and returning* members to the BCC community.

Dear Members,

This summer, we joined BCC, and it has been an incredible experience for our family. What we love most about BCC is the friendly atmosphere; everyone has been so supportive of our golfing adventures with Ralph.

Our favorite memory has been spending quality time together, pushing Ralph around the golf course every weekend. We look forward to the day when he can join us on the course instead of just strolling along.

BCC has truly meant a lot to us this summer. As new parents and former avid golfers, we appreciate having an outdoor activity we can enjoy together while bringing Ralph along. Golf has become a cherished weekend tradition.

One of our favorite golf holes is #5, thanks to its stunning views.

Here’s a photo collage capturing our wonderful moments at BCC this summer!

Thank you for welcoming us!

Christopher, Annie & Ralph

Mary Brush, August 17th, #14

Congratulations to Mary Brush, who made her FIRST EVER, hole-in-one during the Club Championship. Mary knocked a 9 iron in the hole with her first swing on Hole #14. It was witnessed by her fellow competitor, Taylor Moulton, and properly celebrated by all tournament participants! Way to go, Mary!

Pete Kelley, August 10th, #3

Congratulations to Pete Kelley who made an ACE on Hole #3. Pete was playing a casual round of golf on Saturday, when his perfectly struck 6 iron from the tee box landed in the cup! Despite being a skilled golfer and a member of our Club dating back to his junior golf days, this was Pete's FIRST holein-one at BCC. It was witnessed and celebrated by his playing partners: Tim McKenzie, Rob Desautels and Wright Caswell.

Tom Racine, September 17th, #14

Congratulations to Tom Racine who made his 2nd career ACE this past week at BCC. Tom was playing with Rob Muehleck and Steve Offenhartz when he knocked a 7 iron in the hole from 152 yards on #14. Way to go Tom! Rob and Steve coincidentally both had birdies on the hole but on this one instance a 2 wasn't good enough for a win.

Dori Weigand, September 3rd, #3

Congratulations to Dori Weigand who made her FIRST EVER hole-in-one this past week on the 3rd Hole. Dori's amazing shot was witnessed and celebrated by her playing partners Amy Mellencamp and Linda Bouyea. Way to go, Dori!

Dear Members,

It is hard to believe we have completed our final event of the Centennial year. The Fireside Chat was enjoyed by all who attended. I want to thank everyone for making this one of the best years at BCC. I think we accomplished our goal of creating a great buzz throughout the year and leaving the membership with some lasting memories. The clock has become the new focal point for our Club and the book will be a constant reminder of our Club's rich history.

In between those two gifts I think we brought the membership together both on and off the course. The laughs, the outfits and shots during the Hickory Stick Tournament was a great way to kick off the golf season.

The party simply put was, the party of the century.

The Vermont Amateur Championship was as thrilling as we could have hoped for and winning the McCullough Cup was the icing on the cake.

Now when you walk in the front entrance the first thing you see is the beautiful painting that not only sets the tone for the Clubhouse but will be another reminder of this special year. Thank you Jay Overton for this amazing painting!

I am extremely grateful for the members that served on this committee. We were a small committee that made a big impact it was an honor working with you all. Dale Loeffler, Dan Feeney, Elliot Douglas, Jim McFadden, Ken Merritt, Adam Berger, Sarah Seaver and Sarah Whitney, thank you all for your contributions and making this such a special year. I am humbled by the generosity of those members that supported the Centennial Fund. Without you none of this would have been possible.

In my 30+ years of serving on committees', tournaments and the board, this committee and what we contributed to our Club will be the one I cherish the most!!

I believe all these events brought the membership closer together and made us all realize what a gem BCC is and how lucky we all are to be a part of its long rich history.

Sincerely,

Dear Members,

First, I would just like to say thank you to the entire membership for your support, feedback, and dining with us at BCC this season. This season has had its share of challenges and obstacles to overcome, but I strongly believe we have learned from these challenges and will continue to grow and adapt to the needs of the membership and your guests. Thank you all for your patience, and continued support of the F&B department. Taking in the feedback, adapting to, and recognizing our shortcomings is the only way to improve upon the dining experiences at our Club. I am excited to be here, and to utilize the upcoming off season to prepare for an amazing 2025 season.

The winter menu is in the process of being finalized, and will launch Tuesday, November 5th, and we will be offering lunch and dinner service Tuesday through Friday throughout winter. The inspiration of this menu is upscale tavern food, with a focus on member favorites, while still offering a flavorful menu. We will also begin offering themed specials each day of the week. Taco Tuesday, Burger Day on Wednesday, a pasta special each Thursday with a mussel appetizer, and Prime Rib night on Fridays. We are also excited to offer Kid’s Movie Night, as well as Trivia Night once a month during the winter season.

We are continuing to plan and make the necessary moves to implement a mobile ordering system for next year, as well as offer a grab and go cooler in the Grill Room.

I would like to thank all of the seasonal staff for their hard work and dedication during this season and look forward to continuing to work with the team we are developing not only in the F&B department, but organizational wide. Together, we will all work hard to continue providing excellent service, with the high standards of quality that this membership deserves.

Thank you,

Executive

Dear Members,

This fall has been a spectacular finish to an already special Centennial season. As we recap the past season, the Green Department is very proud of their accomplishments. We laid out a plan to present Burlington Country Club as formidable opponent during the Vermont Amateur Championship. Not only did our agronomic plan work flawlessly, the recent improvements by you, the membership, have truly stood out during this showcase event. Hats off to everyone at BCC!

We understand that our cultural practices can be disruptive to the membership. We would like to remind everyone that aerification/verticutting events are necessary for long-term success. Remember, next season as you mention that “the course has never been better”, it directly relates to the work the Greenstaff completes this fall. Cultural practices like aerification, verticutting, and topdressing are the backbone of our agronomic plan.

As we approach the winter months, the Greenstaff still has a many projects to complete. From the surface, the fall would appear to be a time that our workload shrinks. To the contrary, fall is one of our busiest seasons as we prepare the course for the winter without our seasonal staff. Our staff has several winterization and improvement projects planned during the off season.

We wish you a great winter and look forward to next season!

Sincerely, Superintendent

Dear Members,

They say if you don’t like the weather in Vermont, just wait 5 minutes. That certainly hasn’t been the case this fall as we’ve all enjoyed some incredible weather and course conditions the latter thanks to our Golf Course Superintendent Joe Martaniuk and his team.

With great weather came great golf and the crowning of many amazing champions over the last couple of months of the season. Michael Walsh, Jr. won his 3rd consecutive Men’s Club Championship and 4th overall. In doing so, Michael accomplished a feat that hasn’t been seen at BCC since Kiki Price won 7 in a row from 1943 – 1949. Cara Cain won the Women’s Club Championship for the first time ever! Matt Daly and Barb Giebink were victorious in their respective President’s Cup Championships. And the following weekend we crowned our Senior Club Champions. We saw Mary Brush win her 9th Senior Title while Eric Flegenheimer was victorious in a playoff for his 4th victory.

Last, but certainly not least was our final Club event of the 2024 season…the Fred Martell Fall Classic. This year’s champions, Mike Rozzi and Lou Rozzi were victorious in Flight 3 and ultimately the Shoot-Out as well. This victory was especially meaningful for Lou Rozzi who was instrumental in bringing Fred Martell to BCC back in the early 70s. Fred and his wife Nancy were in attendance last year and spent hours on the patio catching up with Mike and Lou. Our golf course is beautiful, the view from the patio is spectacular, our tournaments are fun and competitive, but what makes this Club great is the lifelong friendships that are formed. Unfortunately, Fred Martell was unable to be here for this year’s tournament which is named in his honor, but we know he was cheering on from home.

But all good things must come to an end, and our 100th golf season was certainly a good one, if not the best. That doesn’t mean you have to hang up your clubs just yet. After the course closes for the season, our staff will quickly work to convert our bag room into an indoor simulator. When that becomes available for use more information will be sent out to the membership. But please keep in mind that it is available for booking 7 days a week and our Professional Staff is here to help! We are proud to offer lessons, club fittings, junior golf camps, month-long tournaments and demo days all winter long to help keep that rust off. Please stop by and see us!

Sincerely,

The Swan Song Tournament has been a late Summer fixture on the BCC Women’s tournament schedule since the late 1980s. It was established through the efforts of BCC women led by the late Liz Swim, a beloved member of BCC and a talented golfer who won six Club Championships. Many of the BCC women at the time played as guests in tournaments at other clubs, there were limited tournaments at BCC in which to invite guest. The Swan Song format provided that one member could invite up to three guests. To the extent there were not sufficient guests, foursomes were filled out with BCC members. Over the years the format has varied from best ball to best ball of two, with variations. This year’s format was best two ball of four Shamble with each player teeing off, choosing the best drive, and then each player playing their own ball until holed. In the earlier years of the tournament the assistant pro was (reluctantly) drafted to hit the tee shot on 18 for every foursome. Times have changed.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Fred Martell Fall Classic Tournament, first held in 1999. Named after Burlington Country Club legend Fred Martell, who served as Superintendent from 1975 to 2008, the tournament honors his significant contributions to our Club. Originally from New Hampshire, Fred managed turf at Whip-Poor-Will and UMass before being recruited to BCC by Thomas D. “Doc” Trainer. At his retirement dinner, Doc praised Fred for his pivotal role in establishing BCC as a premier golf facility in Vermont. His innovations, including implementing Dr. Michael Hurdzan’s plan and installing a modern irrigation system, have left a lasting legacy. The tournament not only celebrates his achievements but also fosters community and sportsmanship among participants, ensuring that BCC remains a top destination in the region.

Dear Members,

As the 2024 season comes to an end, I’ve had some time to reflect on what an unbelievably successful season it has been for Junior Golf here at the Burlington Country Club. Thank you to everyone who has participated in our camps, clinics, tournaments and matches! And thank you to the membership for supporting this program by allowing us to access the facilities. When I first came to BCC in 2019, I had a vision to build an academy where players can be introduced to the game and grow all the way through high school at age 17... I look forward to the continuation of growth and expansion and what we will be able to accomplish in 2025!

With continued interest and commitment to player development we were able to divide the Junior Golf Camps into three divisions! This was the first season where we divided the groups based on age in addition to ability and it really helped those in each group thrive. Depending on the day we were able to get out for more on-course instruction and game management.

We had another successful PGA Jr. League season with many new and returning players to our BCC squad! This year we again had one of the biggest PGA Jr. Leagues in the state of Vermont competing in 6 matches with other local clubs. Our overall record with only one loss allowed Team BCC to select four players to the Vermont PGA Jr. League All-Star Team! Making it through sectionals our very own Xander Desautels, Jack Henry, Nick Norris, and Grant Gillman. They went onto play in the Regional PGA Jr. League All-Star Tournament at Bethpage, which was the first time a Vermont U13 team had ever made it that far!

It was also very exciting to see our Junior Golfers participating in more tournaments, whether here at our Club or across the state! Our Parent-Child Tournament had more teams than ever before, and our Junior Club Championship is growing. Outside of BCC, we have players starting to compete in the New England Junior tour events with Nick Norris and Jack Henry placing in the top ten in the Vermont event this summer! Additionally, BCC put on a good showing at the Drive, Chip, and Putt competition in Vermont this year with Nick Norris taking 1st and Xander Desautels placing 2nd overall in the Boys 12-13 brackets and Jack Henry placing 2nd overall in the Boys 13-14 division.

Although our time outside is coming to an end, this winter is a great time to continue the progress we’ve made. After-school clinics will be available all winter long and are always well attended! This is where good players become great and have a lot of FUN in the process.

All the best,

Dear Members,

Happy Fall from the BCC Women’s Group….

To say we had a busy summer is an understatement!

First, let’s talk about the weather. Once we hit June, we had smooth sailing (for the most part) and enjoyed lots of rounds on the course.

Since the last newsletter, we wrapped up Monday Night 9 & Dine, which had ten weeks of play. Our 2024 winner was Sarah Seaver. The Preston match play was won by Jen Farrington and the team match play was won by Cheryl Hoar and Jen Farrington for the fourth straight year!! We had eight women play in the BCC cup and four were on the winning team!

And finally, the Ruth Jones Award was given to Dana Murphy who lowered her handicap by more than 7 points after much hard work throughout the winter and summer. Congratulations, Dana!

Our final get together was the Fall Festival. This was a fun night where we celebrated our winners, had a fabulous meal and said goodbye to those heading out for the winter.

The BCC Women’s Group continues to work hard to make BCC the best place for women’s golf. Our mission statement continues to guide our work: To promote friendship, camaraderie and participation among women golf members at BCC and to enhance communication between women golfers, BCC staff and BCC committees. We welcome your feedback and look forward to making the 2025 season even better!

Cheers,

BCC Women’s Group

Dear Members,

Although the pool has been closed for almost 2 months, this summer’s awesome aquatics season has left a lasting impact. I want to take this opportunity to thank our amazing swim coach, Anna Halladay, one last time. In her time as head coach, Anna has elevated the BCC Swim Team to new heights and has provided an incredibly worthwhile experience for all of our young swimmers. We will certainly miss Anna’s special energy next year.

We are starting the search for a new coach this fall. If you know of anyone in the aquatics world who might be interested in the position, please have them reach out to me! We would also like to encourage members to invite member sponsored families (non-member) to join the swim team for 2025.

Thank you again to coaches Anna, Hally, Lindsey, and Viv for leading our team in style. And thank you to all the swimmers and their families for representing BCC and making this program so special.

We look forward to seeing everyone around the pool in 2025. Have a great “off season”!

Warm regards,

Aquatics Director Spencer Rosner

Dear Members,

For this newsletter issue we would like to recognize a very important staff member, John Carpenter. John Carpenter III has worked for BCC for 5 years and is currently the Senior Assistant Superintendent. After studying turf management, working at various courses around New England, and volunteering at many PGA Tour events, he was thrilled at the opportunity to return to his hometown and work under Joe Martaniuk. John enjoys being able to work outside, improving overall playing conditions, and showcasing the beauty of nature at BCC. When he is not on the golf course, John enjoys boating and travel. He currently resides in South Burlington Vermont with his fiancé Caroline and their dog Goose.

Thank you, John!

Sincerely,
