May 24,
Dear Members,
It’s been so great to welcome so many of you back to the Club now that the season is in full swing. And it’s been especially exciting to welcome our newest members. And I want to thank you all for your ongoing engagement and enthusiasm for our Club and Member Community.
We are excited to share this second newsletter, and thank you to all members who contributed content, and even though I have been involved in all the planning, it amazes me to see the robust list of golf, social and family events and activities we have to look forward to in June and July.
The business office is working hard to keep the membership informed with the latest news and events in the BCC Weekly email, Club News on our website and the BCC app. If you have any questions about any of our communications platforms or how to register for events. please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for being an integral part of our golfing family. I look forward to seeing you at the Club, and of course, at the Centennial Celebration.
Cheers to our 100th seaon!
Warm regards,
Jason Shattie General ManagerDear Members,
We have turned the page into June, and it sure feels like summer is upon us. A weekend of gorgeous weather, and superb course conditions, served as a perfect backdrop to another staging of our Floyd James Invitational--and what an event it was! While the Bond Brothers emerging as champions was fun to watch, my Floyd experience was made special by getting to watch my 17-yrold son (Teddy), and his pal (Patrick Walsh) compete together and win Flight 1! Having known both their entire lives, watching as they made a rousing and dramatic Saturday comeback, including from a large deficit in the sixth and final “repositioning” match, I was overflowing with pride. And, based on the large number of members following the shootout, soaking up the sunshine and camaraderie...the First of June was another in the long history of special days at Burlington Country Club.
But at its best, golf is intimate. The following morning, I (again) joined Teddy on the golf course, but this time as the fourth in a game with two of his junior buddies--each with aspirations to be back next month as competitors in the Amatuer Championship. As we stood on the back tee of hole #3, the beverage cart was gone, there were no carts stacked-up on the path, and it was quiet as we paused for four long-time members to make their way from #11 green to #12 tee. As we exchanged “good morning” with Chris Lothrop, Tom Wilkins, Terry McLoughlin, and Pete Kelley, I couldn’t help but smile at the three relatively new pals watching the four, shall we say, more senior pals, out for a friendly game on a Sunday morning. It was poignant. In moments like this, it is easy to remember why I love the game so much, and just how fortunate I am to be a member at BCC.
Golf is a game of tradition and history, and it takes time to learn from both... while focusing on the future. Whether working on one’s swing, improving a course’s conditions, introducing the game to new players, or figuring out how best to sustain and grow a club’s membership, it is a balance.
I look forward to celebrating with many of you on June 29th.
Israel Maynard Club PresidentDear Members,
Thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Meeting. Your Membership Committee has been diligently addressing the challenge of attracting new committed investors in our “GEM” of a club.
“It’s not a sprint but a marathon.” All of us, as members, have a lot of work to do to get new golf enthusiast to join us at BCC and I am confident we will do it. The product/location/staff/members we have at BCC are second to none in Vermont and that is what we need to be marketing. We (thanks to the front office) have produced a very attractive Membership Brochure that tells and illustrates the BCC story. One that has been going for 100 years. Now we need to get this in the hands of folks that are looking for our wonderful and unique experience.
Armed with this brochure we are launching an “Ambassador Program” and “Experience BCC” initiatives. To kick off these programs our committee will be reaching out to members that have “touches” to folks in their jobs and daily lives. It might be someone new to the area, a business acquaintance that you know, a successful Millennial looking for a great place to bring their family for relaxing recreation, or someone you know that has expressed interest in a better golf experience. If you know someone you think would be a good member of our club, please talk to Jason to set up bringing them up to the club for a round or fine dining on us.
We are all “ambassadors” for our club. Please consider becoming an official ambassador and join in these efforts. If interested contact a committee member or Scott Baldwin.
“Experience BCC” is an extension of the Ambassador program. We will be reaching out to new homeowners in the area by mail and email to invite them to come up for a tour, round of golf, meal, drinks or a day at the pool, on us. The best way to keep cost of maintaining our BCC experience at the level we have become accustomed to is to have full membership.
We invite everyone to be a part of the solution.

Intermediate Golf Member
Dear Members,
When Jason asked me to give a membership bio for the newsletter my first thought was have an old guy do it - damn.
I started playing golf in 1985 and joined as an intermediate when BCC was in a membership / financial crisis. They offered a special fall deal requiring us to pay next years dues in September and play remainder of year for free. I believe 20 + people took advantage of that deal including current member and best 6’ 9” golfer in the state of Vermont. In 1987 I had to pony up my $400 initiation fee and became a full voting stock carrying member. Yes I still have my canceled check and stock certificate in the cellar under 60 years of tax returns. Looking back I can safely say my longevity can be directly attributed to the BCC community and people that make up the membership. Hard to believe I’ve been walking these fairways for almost 40 years with generational names like Austin, Averill, Boardman, Bouchard, Davidson, Farrell, Hanley, Reed, Rozzi and many more.
From Day 1 I have always loved and my focus has been on our golf course. Holes 1-18 and the eternal philosophy of loose $10 drink $20. Then 10 years ago my wife Tory took up the game and eventually made her way to BCC. She exposed me to things I never knew existed such as the the Dorn Fraser, couples golf, dinners on the patio, social events, did you see the cute new outfits Steve just put out, and my favorite discovery - did you know we have a pool???
In the last 40 years we’ve experienced many membership ebbs and flows. From financial crises, the Tiger effect, course renovation, clubhouse renovation and the dark days of COVID (except in Florida where it didn’t happen). The BCC membership has always pulled through. Now with my drives getting shorter and the black tees getting longer (Gordon it’s time to move up) it is exciting to see a new generation of membership step up and continue our stewardship.
There’s still the 18th hole Hog Press “Never give up never surrender” See you on the first tee.
Bill Wilson BCC MemberHello BCC Members,
My name is Daniel Davidson, and I am excited to begin work at Burlington Country Club, serving as the Executive Chef starting June 1st.
I grew up in a rural town in New Hampshire, but have spent most of my adult life living in Burlington, VT. I have been working in the restaurant industry for the last twenty years, in a wide variety of different cuisines and roles.
While I have spent most of my time working in fine dining, I also have equally as much passion in preparing soul warming comfort foods. I would love to find the right balance between these two worlds to best meet the needs of the membership and your guests.
In my free time I enjoy the outdoors; spending time camping, fishing, canoeing, as well as participating in historic European martial arts. Though I haven’t played golf in years, recent events have made me consider getting back into the sport.
I am very excited to learn about your favorite foods, share my passion and favorite foods with you, and to be involved in this community at Burlington Country Club.
Thank you all for this opportunity, I look forward to meeting everyone soon.
- Dan Davidson

We hope you will support this event as a volunteer or spectator. Please email Jim McFadden to volunteer.
Dear Members,
It truly was a blast from the past!
What a great way to kick off our centennial golf season! The weather could not have been better, thank you Doc.
Who knew how much fun it would be to hit spoons, baffies , mashies and jiggers. Over 100 members, some donning era appropriate golf outfits discovered how Donald Ross envisioned playing BCC.
Camaraderie was on full display as we all tried to figure out how far a spoon would go versus a niblick. Afterwards we all enjoyed the best views, great food, some laughs and a pint or two. Thank you to all that participated and from all the positive comments this might become our new kickoff event.
Next up your centennial committee has been planning a party fit for 100 years! The big bash is June 29th. We already have over 300 members signed up and space is limited. Here is a link to sign up.
If the first two centennial events are any indication this is going to be the party of the century.
Cheers , Eric

Dear Members,
After a dreary start to Spring, we finally have reached prime golf season in Vermont. With the completion of the Floyd James, the Green Department accomplished the first leg of our 2024 ‘Plaque Events’ preparation. With the VT Amateur Championship right around the corner, we were able to use the Floyd James as a learning experience for both operational efficiencies and to identify potential areas of weakness.
This upcoming month you can expect to see a slight transition of the golf course. We have altered our agronomic calendar to promote a thicker and more unpredictable rough, which is intended to make BCC play a little longer during the Amateur. What can the membership expect? Short answer, longer rough. We will be increasing the HOC by an inch and letting the bunkers showcase a “shaggier” version of our nor mal appearance. Not to fret, the Greenstaff will revert to our standard conditioning upon the completion of the Amateur.
Returning BCC to normal playing conditions, post Amateur, will take the Greenstaff roughly (pun intended) 1-2 weeks. During which time, the membership should expect to see an increase in grass clippings and blowers on the course as we return the rough to our standard HOC.
Joe Martaniuk SuperintendentDear Members,
This year we have implemented the Adopt-A-Hole program. Which means each golf member has been assigned one hole to help care for throughout the season.
We know that so many of you already fill divots and fix ball marks throughout the course, we’re just asking that you are particularly attentive to your respective hole by taking a little extra time to fill more divots, fix more than one ball mark, rake a bunker properly, etc.
Any golf course that endures 100 years requires a little extra care and attention. We all love our great Donald Ross course, and we need your help caring for this wonderful gem!
Thank you for your cooperation and enthusiasm! The Green & Golf Committees New in 2024
Here are links to the adopt-a-hole assignments.

The list is also posted in the locker rooms and at the starter hut.
The Floyd James was inaugurated by the Club in 1987 as a four-ball tournament. It is named in honor of the late Floyd James, a long-time member of the Club, who played a key role in the development of golf in Vermont. In 1969 The Burlington Free Press referred to Floyd as “Floyd James...Vermont’s Mr. Golf.”
Floyd James was born in Hardwick, Vermont in 1904 and took up golf at the age of ten playing on the nine-hole Hardwick course. He bought a 1914 St. Andrews model putter second hand for 50 cents and used it throughout his golf career. He sank his first hole in one in 1925 on the 8th hole (212 yards) on the Hardwick links which were known as the Abnaki Golf Club. He attended the University of Vermont and graduated in 1927 and was a member of Sigma Phi Fraternity and the track team. According to Andy Gardner, Sports Editor of The Burlington Free Press, “he and his pals used to sneak onto the BCC course which was being built at that time, and play a few holes before the course ever opened.”
Floyd was a talented amateur golfer and shot the low amateur round at the Hartford Connecticut Open in 1957 when he was living in Connecticut. He retired in 1967 and won the Vermont Seniors title in 1968, 1969 and 1970. James was able to break 80 on every course he played and recorded nine holes-in-one during his long golfing career.
In retirement James devoted himself to promoting golf in Vermont and served as President, Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of the Vermont Golf Association. James was instrumental in the establishment of the Vermont Golf Association Scholarship Program.
James was honored by the University of Vermont in 1966 with the Letter in Life Plaque which was presented annually to a lettermen in recognition of his devotion to the University and his accomplishments in life. As of 1966 James had played in 43 consecutive Vermont Amateur Tournaments. Floyd was a member of numerous BCC McCullough Cup teams (Club team completion during the Vermont Amateur) and was a member of the winning team in 1953 and 1955 during the post-World War II period when BCC’s male golfers dominated the McCullough Cup competition. During the period 1947-1966 BCC’s team won the McCullough Cup 15 times led by BCC’s legendary Clifton W. “Kiki” Price. The University also established the James Golf Award which was awarded annually to a member of the UVM Men’s Golf Team. The first recipient was James Nixon, the captain of the 1966 Golf Team. A number of BCC members that were members of the UVM Men’s Golf team were recipients of the James Award including Bruce Bellemare and Lloyd Hier. James served as a director of the New England Golf Association and as treasurer of the America Seniors Golf Association.
In 1950 Floyd James served as BCC President and continued to serve BCC in a variety of capacities over his long and illustrious amateur golfing career. James passed away in 1999 at the age of 95.
Ken Merritt Club Historian2024 marks the 45th anniversary of the Tournament (formerly the Peg Durfee Classic) which was established in 1979 to honor long-standing Burlington Country Club member Margaret Spaulding “Peg” Durfee.
Peg was born in 1898 in Bainbridge, NY and spent her childhood in Salem, NY. She graduated from Arnold College in New Haven, which was the first co-educational college offering instruction in hygiene and physical education. Peg was a physical education major.
She came to Burlington in 1921 as the bride of Dr. Herbert Ashley Durfee, who had graduated from UVM Medical School in 1920. Dr. Durfee was a prominent obstetrician and served as the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UVM Medical College.
Peg was an avid golfer and she and Dr. Durfee were members of Waubanakee Golf Club, located on Shelburne Street in South Burlington, the predecessor of Burlington Country Club. She teed it up in 1926 in the inaugural season of play at Burlington Country Club and played hundreds of round of golf over the next 60 plus years.
Peg and Dr. Durfee had four children including Dr. Herbert A. Durfee, Jr. who followed in his father’s footsteps and was a prominent obstetrician in Burlington. In addition to raising her children, Peg volunteered for various non-profits and devoted countless hours as a “Gray Lady” at the UVM Medical Center.
Peg was adored by her friends and golfing buddies. Barbara Goss, another long-standing member of BCC summarized it best when speaking about the Tournament - “We wanted to have a day to honor this woman. She’s a lovely lady. When I see her bowling all winter and then golfing all summer I think it is tremendous.“ Peg died in 1989 at the age of 90.
