Women Golfers at Burlington Country Club

Women golfers have played a key role at Burlington Country Club since it was established in 1924. Actually, women were involved beginning in 1897 in the organization of BCC’s predecessor, Waubanakee Golf Club, which established links on S. Prospect Street on the estates of Le Grand B. Cannon and Henry Holt. Mrs. A.E. Richardson was Vice President and Miss Caroline D. Smalley was Secretary. James E. Betts, a Scotsman, designed a nine-hole course for Waubanakee on Shelburne Street in 1899. The inaugural Women’s Club Championship was held in 1901 and was won by Miss Florence Allen, 2 and 1. Waubanakee was one of the founding members of the Vermont Golf Association in 1904. In 1924 Waubanakee changed its name to Burlington Country Club and purchased 150 acres from New York publisher Henry Holt. The Club retained the leading golf course architect of the era, Donald J. Ross, who in collaboration with his associate, Walter B. Hatch, designed the course we have the privilege of playing today.

World Handicap System

The maximum score for each hole played is limited to a Net Double Bogey, calculated as follows…Par of the hole + 2 strokes + Any handicap stroke(s) that the player receives on that hole.

Example – A player with a handicap of 18 receives 1 stroke per hole so if they pick up on Hole #1, it would be 4 (par) + 2 + 1 (the stroke they receive on that hole) for a total of 7.

Example - A player with a handicap of 25 receives 2 strokes on the 7 hardest holes, so if they picked up on Hole #6 (the #1 handicap hole on the course), it would be 4 (par) + 2 + 2 (the strokes they receive on that hole) for a total of 8.

There is no limit to the number of holes on which you can adjust your score.

See the Golf Shop if you need to set up a GHIN (Golf Handicap & Information Network) number.

We hope you have an AMAZING Season!
