I’m Joanne, your Gardening Guru and each month I’ll be giving you some ideas that will add colour and interest to your garden. Now is the time to look at summer flowering bulbs - a wonderful addition to borders and a great infill between perennials and shrubs. Bulbs such as Crocosmias and Irises will survive throughout the winter in borders. There are many Irises to choose from – tall varieties such as Jane Phillips (pale mauve flowers), or Sable (dark purple flowers), with both growing to 90cm high or smaller varieties such as Iris Pallida (lavender blue flowers) growing to 60cm. There are several varieties of Crocosmias to choose from - flowering from August onwards. Taller varieties such as Lucifer (dark red flowers); Masonorum (orange flowers) and smaller varieties such as George Davidson (lemon/yellow flowers) or Emberglow (orange flowers). Try dahlias for late summer splash of colour. There are many to choose from but here are 3 – Bishop of Llandaff (bright red with black leaves); Bishop of Leicester (pink) and York (pale yellow). Other bulbs to try are Cannas, agapanthus and lilies. It’s definitely worth adding some summer bulbs into your garden as they are low maintenance, popping up each year to give additional colour in your garden. Things to do in the garden this month • Clean greenhouses, sheds and tools • Prepare vegetable beds and cover with • Prune winter flowering shrubs if they have finished flowering – see websites such as Crocus and The RHS website. • Cut back any ornamental grasses before new growth appears • Prune evergreen hedges • Divide snowdrop clumps if finished flowering • Move established deciduous shrubs - but not if the ground is waterlogged as the roots will rot

Roast pork with pears, perry & new potatoes This easy family roast dinner has a wonderful mix of textures, from crunchy crackling to deliciously soft pears.
What to do:
1 Tear your chicken breast in to small pieces – and lightly coat with chilli paste 2 In a pan, add the olive oil and sauté the chicken breast for about a minute or two 3 Add your tomato, and then cream, and then a teaspoon of chilli paste 4 Add salt and pepper 5 Once sauce is reduced – add your spinach 6 Add your cooked pasta 7 Mix all together and serve

Separating Fact From Fiction
I have just seen Danny Boyle’s film, Trance. I was, of course, compelled to see it because of it’s title and the work that I do! I won’t spoil the story for those of you who have yet to watch it, but I can safely say it’s a psychological thriller with one of the three main characters being a hypnotherapist. From thereon in my interest is in the effect this, and other movies, have on people’s perceptions of hypnosis and who is actually in control when you’re in a hypnotic trance because movies like this (as well as the erroneous impression created by stage hypnotists) perpetuate the myth that the hypnotherapist is in control and can make you do things you don’t want to do. In an interview with the Guardian, Boyle said “You’re hypnotised when you watch a movie.” Of course, if it’s an engrossing movie (even a scary one) you watch it all the way through; if it doesn’t get or keep your attention, you watch something else. So, if you’re in a trance, but decide to either stick with the movie you’re watching or change to another movie (or even a different activity altogether)…who do you think is in control? Yes…. YOU!! No matter how engrossing the movie (or other activity) you’re engaged in, you can always choose to watch or engage in something else. You’re making the decision, even though you may not feel like you are because the result is scary, or painful (physically as well as mentally) or discouraging, or not what you hoped for, or.... Boyle also quoted Nick Rogue, one of his heroes, who said “Cinema is perfect for taking time past,
time present, time future, time imagined, and they’re just one: there’s no differentiation in cinema.” Boyle added, “Cinema allows you to use all these different time references, even imaginary ones, to pass as evidence.” And that’s the essence of the psychological thriller playing in the cinema we call our lives! We are, and always have been, in one form of trance or another throughout our entire lives, accepting all sorts of images and events, even imaginary ones, to pass as evidence which then impact upon our future decisions and actions, constantly compounding the effects of a lot of imaginary, or incomplete, historic, or future, projections. Lifestyles MBPTS - Februarys Move of the Month - Double Leg Stretch This move is amazing for your Abs but does require a lot of strength from your stomach, so make sure you build your Reps up gradually depending on your fitness levels. Position 1 Lie on your back in Supine position holding neutral spine, bring your feet off the floor with your knees slightly over your hips. Brace your Abs to help support your lower back and keep them tight through out the move. Curve your upper body off the floor and bring your forehead towards your knees which will gently push your lower back in to the floor. Always keep your legs above your knees to create the tension in your Abs. Position 2 Take your legs out in front and at the same time arms slightly over head. If you want to make this move easier leave your upper back on the floor or keep your legs higher in position 2. Repeat this move 12-15 Times then rest and try and complete around 3 sets depending on how strong your stomach is. Always consult your GP before starting any exercise programs.
