Marching Band & Color Guard Edition

Director’s Note

As we move through our year, we felt it would be helpful to pass along some tips for instrument maintenance and cleaning. These are expensive and intricate pieces of equipment that will break if you even look at them the wrong way at times, so it’s important that everyone do their best to keep them in the best working order. Just like a car, they need regular “tuning up” so that they will work correctly every single time. When an instrument breaks and it has to go out to a repair shop, that is time that you lose playing in the ensemble, practicing at home, and growing as a musician. The more you do regular maintenance on your horn the less the chance of a catastrophic break that would see you sitting in band without an instrument for 2 to 3 weeks. Please read carefully below and if you have questions, or need supplies come and see Mr. Cardona or Mr. Cargill so we can assist you and set you up for success. Flutes Joints between pieces should be regularly wiped clean with a clean soft cloth. Keep your lip plate clean by wiping it with a soft cloth and avoiding eating before you play. Clarinets Reeds should be removed from mouthpieces after each use and safely stored in a reed case. Be careful to avoid squeezing the side keys while assembling the instrument as they are easily bent. Cork grease should be regularly applied to all joints. A gentle twisting motion may be used when assembling or disassembling

the instrument. Assembling a clarinet should never take an excessive amount of force. If you have difficulty getting two pieces of your clarinet together or apart DO NOT FORCE THEM. Bring them to Mr. Cardona so he can adjust the corks and fix the problem. Saxophones Never hold your saxophone by the neck. Be sure when inserting the neck to hold it near the joint and not by the end to avoid bending it. Cork should be regularly greased. Reeds should be removed from the mouthpiece and safely stored when not in use. When setting the instrument down be sure it is set on the right side of the instrument so as not to bend that left hand palm keys. Do not try to adjust the key work on your own instrument. Instead bring it to Mr. Cardona or an instrument repair shop. Attempting to make adjustments on your own may lead to damaging your instrument. Be sure not to place music or any other object on top of your instrument when you put it in its case. Trumpets, Mellophones, Baritones All piston valves should be oiled regularly. Be sure to press valves straight down while playing to avoid bending them. Tuning slides and 1st/3rd valve slides should be regularly wiped down with a clean cloth and lubricated with slide grease. Instruments should be wiped down with a clean cloth prior to all performances. Silver instruments may be polished with a non-abrasive silver polish but must be thoroughly wiped clean after polishing. Mouthpieces should never be tapped or hit while they are in the instrument. Mouthpieces may be gently

We have large orange jugs that will be used for these drinks. It will be hot again on Saturday and our children need to stay hydrated. Please contact Karen Maroot right away at 352-7439 to sign up. You do not need to go to the competitions to do this, but attending would be helpful. turned into the instrument after being inserted to keep them from flying out during visuals. Brass instruments should never be set down on their bells. Gloves should always be worn with silver plated instruments. Trombones Trombone slides should be regularly cleaned and lubricated with grease that is specifically for trombone slides. Tuning slides may be wiped down and lubricated with regular tuning slide grease. Trombones should be regularly wiped down. Gloves should be used with all silver brass instruments. Sousaphones Sousaphone valves should be regularly lubricated with standard valve oil. Tuning slides may be wiped clean and lubricated with slide grease. If a water key falls off your sousa be sure to keep track of all parts of it (spring, water key, screw/ pin) and bring them to Mr. Cardona to reassemble. Bells and bodies should be wiped down before all performances.

VOLUNTEER SHORTAGE!!! Have YOU SIGNED UP FOR ONE November Save Mart Center Event?

Thank you to all of our parents who have signed up for one November SMC event. We are still WAY SHORT of what is needed to keep our contract.

This is another URGENT request for one adult from ALL Band and Guard Families to sign up for ONE Save Mart Center Event in November. We are in danger of losing this big dollar year-round fundraiser because of lack of volunteers. If you aren’t alcohol trained, you can do it now from home and get certified within just a few hours. (See below.) You are fundraising to support your child’s chosen year-long activity. It cannot be stressed enough how close we are to losing our contract. When band members had the option to go to Washington, D.C., two years ago, it was Save Mart Center fundraising that got students there without having to pay

their own money. We will be taking a trip at some point in the future and YOU WILL WANT THIS TO BE HERE FOR YOU and YOUR STUDENT because it is a fast way to fundraise a lot of money. Right now, we are falling WAY SHORT, about $6,000 so far, of what we should be making for the band program. Remember, we all live busy lives, but if you want a quality program for your child, we need ONE ADULT FROM EACH FAMILY to sign up, then show up to volunteer! Believe it when we say you WILL want this fundraiser when the time comes to fundraise a lot of money. Thank you for understanding this situation. Please SIGN UP TODAY. See list to the left along with instructions on where to sign up.

Trained volunteers can sign up for Fresno State Football Games and the many Save Mart Center events throughout the year. This is the fastest way to reach your fundraising goal and to ensure our band and guard program has the funds to be competitive.

SEVERAL LEVELS OF BAND SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE

Now is the time to start asking local businesses, family and friends for sponsorships. BHS Band and Color Guard has several different levels of sponsorships.

The Director’s Circle, which includes donations of $1,000 and greater, will receive their names and/or logos on all of our trailers, programs, poster, newsletters, Facebook and website.

There are five other levels ranging from $150 to $750. All sponsorships will be credited to the person who brought it in, less expenses. In order to get a name on the trailers and posters, there are deadlines starting in late October. Please make sure your potential sponsor knows this. Sponsor packets are attached to this newsletter and will be available on the band website over the weekend.

Many employers have in place sponsor programs for their employees so check with your HR department and see what’s available. Others will match contributions by you. Bullard High School, especially our Marching Band, is a big part of this community and many alumni are business owners who would love to contribute. All you have to do is ask!

WIN FREE LUNCH FROM THE DIRECTORS!

Want to have your Band Director buy you lunch? Starting next week through the raffle drawing December 13, the Directors will be awarding one student a free lunch every Friday.

The person who sells the most raffle tickets EACH WEEK will get their choice of lunch on Fridays. All money must be turned in by Wednesday at 3 pm to qualify for that Friday’s free lunch amd the winner will be announced at Thursday night’s practice. The winner will request their food to Mr. Cargill or Mr. Cardona and they will have their lunch brought to them on Friday in the band room during Lunch with the Directors. The Grand Prize is 4 UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD “THREE VISIT” TICKETS! That means three visits in a one year period and they do not have to be consectutive days. 2nd prize is a 36” 4-Burner Blackstone

Outdoor Griddle. What a great prize if you love cooking in the backyard. Carne asada, tepanyaki, and breakfast for an entire family are just a few things you can cook on this large griddle. 3rd prize is a Fitbit Versa, a great prize for all ages. There will be a few more prizes added as well. Prizes will be randomly drawn during the Winter Concert on December 13. Tickets are $1.00 each. Every student will be given 10 tickets to start and can ask for more. After the first 20 tickets are sold, half of what you sell goes toward your fundraising account. Students that sell 100 tickets will be treated to a party. Every fifty tickets that are sold will earn one entry to win Apple Wireless AirPods valued at $150. If you have questions, contact Matt Spencer or Amy Pacheco or call Lisa Peacock at 307-7590.

Sierra Cup Concessions Volunteers Needed! In two weeks, our band and guard will perform at the Sierra Cup Concession stand at Bulldog Stadium. We are the only concession stand at the competition and we will need about 30 volunteers at various shifts or you can volunteer all day. We have been fortunate to have this opportunity for the past three years. Our band and guard has earned over $1500 in past years. It’s expected we will make the same this year. Signups will start this weekend, so please sign up for at least one shift. When you sign up for a shift, you will get in free to the competition. We will, however, need a shift to work when our band performs

at 2 pm. Senior parents who work will be allowed to leave and watch their child perfrom since it is their final year. It is important to our music program that we take advantage of these opportunities when they come up. We have three competitions coming up, so we ask parents to sacrifice some time for just one of them on November 3 to help fund your child’s program. We will need 8 cashiers, 6 prep workers, 1 banker, and 1 stand leader at all times in the stand. Again, we have broken down this into various shifts since it is a long day.

We have a few shifts that start as early as 8 am and we wiill finish up at 10:30 pm. Each person is credited by what they actually work and the profits are split evenly based on how many hours each person works. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Peacock at 307-7590. Thank you for volunteering!
