Marching Band & Color Guard Edition

Director’s Note

Good Evening All,

This is a plea to all of our parents out there, the band needs your help. We are in dire straights for our Save Mart Center Fundraising efforts. This is the most profitable fundraiser and funds major portions of the band program for the year. It is failing right now, we will not be able to meet our fundraising goals for the year if we do not see more volunteers signing up for the events that are happening. The long term goals of this band program are dependent on having the income from the Save Mart Center fundraiser available to us. Mr. Cardona and I are moving the band in a direction where our program would regularly be travelling to marching band competitions in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Utah and eventually Indianapolis, Indiana. We are beginning to look into more high profile performance opportunities for our concert programs as well. In the spring, the Wind Ensemble is already set to have 6 separate performances and down the road we will be applying to take our ensembles to perform at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York City. None of these plans will come to fruition if we lose our Save Mart Center contract. The reality of where we are at in terms of

funding for the band programs is setting in on Mr. Cardona and I. If we are unable to meet these goals with the fundraising money we get from the Save Mart Center and our other fundraisers, we will have to begin making tough decisions about what our marching band, concert band and winter programs will not be doing anymore. I encourage every parent who has more questions about the direction of the band program, and what this money will be used for, to attend our next Bullard Parent Meeting on November 8 at 6 pm in N75. I will be there to discuss these ideas with everyone and answer questions. Please, our students need your help. Visit our band webpage and sign up for Save Mart Center events. No one is expected to be at every one, but once a month, twice a month or whenever you can will make a huge difference. This income stream will make or break the longevity of the band program and it is essential that we keep it and it stays profitable. Contact Lisa Peacock at 307-7590 and/ or Lynn Mason at 287-8836 about how you can get signed up and get alcohol trained if needed. Thank you, Mr. Cargill

LEAD Alcohol Training can be done from the comfort of your home! See Page 4 to learn how easy it is to sign up.

What does all this fundraising pay for? The Bullard Band Backers, the booster club which you are a member of (because your student is in the band or color guard), has its own budget, income and expenses of things we have to pay for which Fresno Unified does not provide, for example: • Instructor Pay – your students enjoy additional instruction and more individual attention from the 10 instructors you see working with them in the classroom and on the field. • Trailer Transportation – It takes a professional driver to pull Big Blue around all year for competitions, games and winter program events.

we purchase new flags, poles and other equipment our guard use in competition and parade. • Front Ensemble Equipment and Trailer Repairs – the Band Backers owns the trailer and equipment we use to carry around your student’s instruments and supplies to each competition and festival. We have to spend our own funds to keep up these items for the safety and ease of use by your students. • Winter Programs – Color Guard and Front Ensemble participate in additional competitive events post-marching season which requires its own expenses for costuming, props and supplies.

• Marching, Winter, & Concert Season Competition and Festival Entry Fees – It costs money to enter in all these events as participants.

This is why we need ALL OF YOU to help us fundraise to meet all of our financial obligations for this year, while your students are enjoying an amazing, life-changing experience with their life• Color Guard Uniforms – Each year long friends! we purchase new costumes to make our guard look great on the field. If you have any questions, you can email Lisa Meg at hyemeg@sbcglobal.net. • Color Guard Equipment – Each year

Next Parent Band Backers Meeting is Thursday, Nov 8th

Band & Colorguard families meet once a month to talk about what’s new and what’s happening with Band & Colorguard, Fundraising, Finances and to receive important instructions from Mr. Cargill & Mr. Cardona. It’s essential that you try to attend as many as possible to get the most information to help your student succeed. If you have any questions please go to Bullardband.com for more information on contacting Board Members, Fundraising Chairpersons, and Calendar Events.

EARNING FUNDRAISING CREDITS is SO EASY and SO NECESSARY

If you haven’t started fundraising yet, DO NOT FEAR! It’s never too late!! Sign up for Savemart Center, FSU & Sierra Cup Concessions events in November; sell Sees Candy, Red Carpet Car Wash tickets, Save Around Coupon Books and Jamba Juice cards; take orders for and plan to help make Berrocks on December 8th! We have many different fundraisers for you to pick from, so that you have choices of what’s best for your needs. There are

so many easy ways to earn credits and make money for your student’s success! We need every one of you to try their best and help us earn enough money to pay for all the expenses it takes to keep this program going. Remember that Fresno Unified generously pays for the student instruments, marching uniforms, music, bus and drill fees. However, that’s only part of what we need to keep a competitive marching band & color

guard.

Meeting your $500 fundraising goal is so easy and fast. Just start with one event, one fundraiser. You’ll see how easy and fun it is. Your students will love you and thank you for being a part of what is so important to them. Your kids love marching band and color guard. It takes all of us to make it great!

Guard Captain and Senior Allie Jack, and the Bullard Marching Knights, perform at last Thursday’s football game. The band performed their field show Fathoms during halftime. Come support the band on Saturday and see the parade march and the new additions to the field show. The band and guard are always adding content and it’s fun to see each week what’s new!

WILL YOU WIN FREE LUNCH FRI?

Want to have your Band Director buy you lunch? Each week, through the raffle drawing December 13, the Directors will be awarding one student a free lunch every Friday.

The person who sells the most raffle tickets EACH WEEK will get their choice of lunch on Fridays. Congratulations to Stephanie Cota Rubio for winning the first lunch. She sold 150 tickets. Remember, all money must be turned in by Wednesday at 3 pm to qualify for that Friday’s free lunch and the winner will be announced at Thursday night’s practice. The winner will request their food to Mr. Cargill or Mr. Cardona and they will have their lunch brought to them on Friday in the band room during Lunch with the Directors. The Grand Prize is 4 UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD “THREE VISIT” TICKETS! That means three visits in a one year period and they do not have to be consectutive days. 2nd

prize is a 36” 4-Burner Blackstone Outdoor Griddle. What a great prize if you love cooking in the backyard. Carne asada, tepanyaki, and breakfast for an entire family are just a few things you can cook on this large griddle. 3rd prize is a Fitbit Versa, a great prize for all ages. There will be a few more prizes added as well. Prizes will be randomly drawn during the Winter Concert on December 13. Students have sold over 700 tickets so far! Tickets are $1.00 each. Each student was given 10 tickets to start and can ask for more. After the first 20 tickets are sold, half of what you sell goes toward your fundraising account. Students that sell 100 tickets will be treated to a party. Every fifty tickets that are sold will earn one entry to win Apple Wireless AirPods valued at $150. Contact Matt Spencer or Amy Pacheco or call Lisa Peacock at 307-7590.

More Sierra Cup Volunteers Needed! Next Saturday, our band and guard will perform at the Sierra Cup Classic held at Bulldog Stadium. We are fortunate to staff the only concession stand during the competition. We will need about 30 volunteers at various shifts. We have had this opportunity for the past three years. Our band and guard earned over $1500 in past years. It’s expected we will make the same this year. Signups are going on now, so please sign up for at least one shift. When you sign up for a shift, you will get in free to the competition. We will, however, need a shift to work when our band performs at 2 pm. Senior parents who work will

be allowed to leave and watch their child perform since it is their final year. It is important to our music program that we take advantage of these opportunities when they come up. We have three competitions coming up, so we ask parents to sacrifice some time for just one of them on November 3 to help fund your child’s program. We will need 8 cashiers, 6 prep workers, 1 banker, and 1 stand leader at all times in the stand. Again, we have broken down this into various shifts since it is a long day. We have a few shifts that start as early as

8 am and we wiill finish up at 10:30 pm. Each person is credited by what they actually work and the profits are split evenly based on how many hours each person works. To sign up, contact Lisa Peacock at 3077590. Family and friends are welcome to volunteer on the student’s behalf. Thank you for volunteering!
