Marching Band & Color Guard Edition

BHS

Director’s Note

by Mr. Cargill, Director

As our year progresses, and we enter the “calm before the storm” that is the marching band competitive season, I thought it would be important for me to take some time to discuss all the things that the funds you parents work so hard to fundraise each year goes for. The Band Backers largest expenditure each year to pay for the staff that you see assisting Mr. Cardona and Myself. Our Band Backers have for years, raised the money to allow us to have a staff of highly trained, highly qualified assistants that can give each student individual attention. Our staff is made up of some of the finest performers and instructors in the pageantry world. Our percussion staff is comprised of veteran members of the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band, Red Wave Indoor Percussion and Valley Independent Percussion. The visual staff brings us a host of experience from both the BMB, including a former head Drum Major and current staff member, and the Santa Clara Vanguard drum and bugle corp organizations. Our guard staff have been members of the BMB, Santa Clara Vanguard Winter programs, the Frente Winter Arts programs, and Imbue Winter Arts, which are some of the best color guard programs in the Western United States. Mr. Cardona and I work extremely hard to make sure that only the most qualified performers and educators are brought in to help your students achieve their highest potential, and it is very important to the success of our marching band and color guard programs that we be able to continue bringing these instructors in each day. These staff members have invested

in your students and their success and it is important that we be able to invest in them. After staff, the money that you help us raise goes to pay for the transportation and feeding of our band program. Big Blue (our semi trailer) and our smaller trailers Lil’ and Baby Blue are owned and maintained by the Bullard Band Backers. This includes all servicing (tire replacements, maintenance, towing fees) as well as one of our largest costs, hiring a professional certified truck driver to take our semi to all of it’s competitions. This is not cheap, even with the help of some of our wonderful Backer parents who have gone out of their way to find us the best deals possible. We cannot take a band of this size anywhere without these trailers and the price tag is steep. Along with getting the band somewhere, we want to feed the students; the backers raise the money to purchase all of the food that is served to our band members at all of our competitions. The hard working members of our Chuck Wagon crew go above and beyond to have nutritious and filling meals available to students on competitions days, feeding them at least once, if not upwards of three times a day depending on how long we are out. I’m sure I don’t have to tell all of you parents how much a teenager can eat, now multiply that by 130! To give every student in the Bullard Marching Band and Color Guard the experience that they deserve, we need as much help as is humanly possible. Of course, we are not asking you to sign up for every single fundraiser, please look at your schedules and visit bullardband.com and see which fundraisers you can help us with. Our Fresno State concession stands and working events at the Save Mart Center are huge events where we can raise a lot of

FALL REGISTRATION 1st Payment - $50 Due 8/31/18 2nd Payment - $50 Due 9/30/18 Fall Registration is $175, but families who pay the 3 monthly payments of $50 or pay $150 in full by 10/31/18 get a $25 discount off the price! Thank you so much to our awesome families for getting the first payments in on time and even payments of $150 in full already to help us get our year started ordering and paying for items for your students! If you haven’t yet, don’t worry it’s not too late! Please make your registration payments this week. The registration pays for items your student directly receives (bus transportation, chuckwagon food, music, & show shirts) Catch up quick, because the next payment of $50.00 is due on 9/30/18. Go to BullardBand.com/shop to find an easy link to make your payment online. Thank you so much for your early support!

money that is immediately turned around and put into your student’s education. Thank you all so much for the support that you have given us so far, and I hope that you will continue to work with and support each and every student in the Bullard Band and Color Guard program. It is really a pleasure for me to come to work every day and teach these fine young men and women. I want to give them the most holistically sound and educational experience that I can. Myself, Mr. Cardona, our staff, and the students need your help to make this year the success it can be.

The THURSDAY

Treasurer’s Corner

Have you paid for your marching shoes? If you have not done so already, please take care of your shoe payment as soon as possible, as we are placing the order. Shoe payment is $40.00, payable by cash, check or online at bullardband.com/ shop. Remember to put your student’s name and “shoes” in the memo section of your check or on your cash envelope and drop it in the band safe located in the band room. You can check with Sarah Spradling to verify whether we are ordering shoes for your student at popciclesarah@gmail.com

Need to Make a Payment or Purchase a Fundraising Item? • Cash, Check, Money Order – place in envelope with student name & reason for payment (Fall Registration, Shoes, Car Wash tickets, etc.) then drop in safe located in band room. • Credit Card through PayPal – go to www. bullardband.com and click “Shop” for more information • Please do not lump payments together for multiple items. Write a separate check for each payment you are making (fundraisers, Fall Registration, CG shoes). • Please make sure funds are available in your account, since fundraising checks may take time to post once the fundraiser is completed. Your check will be cashed, I promise we won’t forget it. If you have a question about your check, email hyemeg@ sbcglobal.net.

All students have been sized for marching shoes. All new students as well as students who need new shoes had shoes ordered by our uniform crew.

When will CHARMS be Updated? Many of you have been asking about your CHARMS accounts, and when they will be updated. We apologize for the delay. Our Treasurer, Lisa Megerdichian, will be working this week on getting CHARMS charges, payments and credits applied. We know how important this is to all of you and want to reassure you that your payments and credits are there and will be applied asap. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

How to Log into CHARMS In addition to the Fall Registration, we ask each student’s family achieve a Fundraising Goal for the year of $500 per student. We have many fundraisers available to assist you in meeting our budgetary goals for the year. It’s so easy and fun to do! Sign up for Save Mart Center events, Fresno State Football games, sell Red Carpet Car Wash tickets and Save Around coupon books. With each fundraiser, you will receive a credit of the profit which we will apply against your fundraising goal for the year. You’ll be amazed how fast you can meet and even exceed this goal. Please help our students succeed by participating with us! To log into CHARMS: • Go to Charmsoffice.com or Bullardband.com & click on the CHARMS link or download the App (Login using your computer first and change the password before downloading the mobile app.) • Enter the School Code: BullardBackers (all one word, not case sensitive) • Enter the password: your student’s FUSD ID number found on any report card (with no zero in front). You will be asked to change your password. Write it down somewhere to remember. Click on the Update Info icon to view, add or change your contact information. Click on the Finances icon to view application of your payments and fundraising credits. We will be showing payments and credits later this month. Stay tuned and thanks for your patience while we get the student files current! If you have trouble logging on to your student’s account, please contact Lisa Megerdichian at hyemeg@sbcglobal.net.

Berrock Orders Due Oct 2nd

Our first baking date is Saturday, October 6th so it’s time to let your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and teachers know baking day is almost here! For this first baking day, we need 36 student and adult volunteers to sign up to work at least part of the day. When we have 36 volunteers sign up (half need to be students and half adults), it is possible that Disneyland gives us up to 10 one day park hopper tickets as part of their new family volunteering program. If we are granted these tickets, they can be auctioned off at our silent auction in the Spring which means more money for our band and guard program. Volunteers are needed starting early in the morning at Ahwahnee Middle School. Two shifts are available: 6:30 am – 10:30 or 10:30 am – 2:30 pm Each berrock is individually wrapped which makes it great to eat right away or pop in the microwave from the refrigerator or freezer! Berrocks are $25 per dozen. All orders must be picked up and payments must be made no later than the time of pick up on Saturday, October 6. Pay by cash, checks made payable to Bullard Band Backers or online at BullardBand.com/Shop. $10 per dozen goes into your fundraising account as long as you volunteer to help make them. If you cannot make them, you can split your profits with another volunteer who makes them. See attached for the order form, and hurry because quantities are limited. We usually sell out the first baking day, so get your orders in. Deadline to order is Oct 2.

Save Around Red Carpet Coupon Books Car Wash Tickets

Every book sold for $25 earns $12 in fundraising credits towards your fundraising goal. Just pre-sell your books, place the order form in your envelope (make sure the student’s name and phone number are on it) and put the envelope in the band safe, or pay online at BullardBand.com/Shop. You can pick up the books on Thursday evening at practice or make arrangements with Harriet or Cindy to get one. See Harriet Tom or Cindy Flores for more information. Harriet Tom 9078167 hctom06@yahoo.com or Cindy Flores at 203-4606 florescindy565@ gmail.com.

If you have questions regarding your order, contact Elvia Reyna at 285-6379.

Red Carpet Car Wash Tickets are $15 each and $7.50 goes straight to your account. They will sell themselves as long as you let people know we are selling them. It’s a great deal with 2 washes for the price of 1. Contact Andrea Visciglio at 559-367-9592 or email adaivisciglio@att.net. She is available at monthly meetings and you can always contact her for special arrangements. You can also buy online at BullardBand. com/Shop. Hurry tickets will go fast!

Concessions

Sign up to work concessions for the remaining 3 Fresno State games. All the profits are split amongst the workers then applied to your fundraising account. All you need is a pair of tan shorts or pants (no short-shorts), a good pair of tennis shoes, and your time. A Bulldog polo is provided at the game. Go to BullardBand.com for more details. We need just a few more people for September 29 and more for the two Nov games. Contact Lisa Peacock at 307-7590 or lisapeacock8@icloud.com.

The Annual Student-Run Raffle Fundraiser is planned to kick off on Saturday, September 21st.

We have two new student chairs this year. They are Juniors Matt Spencer, who is the Trombone Section Leader, and Amy Pacheco, our Drum Major. They are working to get a committee of fellow students organized to select raffle prizes and come up with incentives to keep the students engaged in the fundraiser for the next few months. Raffle tickets will be $1.00 again this year. Each student is asked to sell at least 20 tickets. After 20 tickets are sold, 50 cents from every ticket sold goes to your

fundraising account. The drawing will be held at our Winter Concert in December. Last year, band and guard students sold 6,200 tickets and we are hoping to sell even more this year! We will try to get a few dates to sell in front of Save Mart again. Also, we will need one parent who wants to earn fundraising credits for their student to sell at the Regional Night football game in October. The goal is to send tickets home with every student after next Saturday’s practice. Parents, please watch for them. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Peacock at 307-7590.
