Tremendous Fire Nov. 3 Destroys Americqn Hordwood Co. Plqnf
Complete loss of stock was suffered in the four-alarm fire which destroyed the plant of the American Hardwood Co. at 15th and Alameda streets in Los Angeles late November 3. More than LOO firemen fought the flames and stubborn embers into the morning of November 4 as they still spewed smoke into the air 18 hours after the fire started in the yard's office. Three other businesses were wiped out along with the prominent wholesale lumber concern. Two firemen were injured when they jumped off a 1Gft. pile of lumber to escape being crushed when a higher stack started falling on them. A watchman turned in the alarm at 6:45 p.m. after seeing flames in the office and firemen had it more or less contained by 9:15 p.m.
E. M. Taenzer of the firm said that the only things saved in the fire were the company records, which were in a vault. The very day after the fire, however, all of the other local hardwood lumber companies were on the phone to the Taenzers offering them the use of their yards and inventories to fill the American Hardwood Co. orders. Meanwhile, the company was conducting "business as usual" and looking confidently toward early rebuilding.

Lumber Market Hurts NWP
Santa Rosa, Calif.-The Northwestern Pacific R. R. was running two fewer freight trains a week last month because of the poor lumber market. General Manager Morrison said NWP is a one-commodity railroad and lumber is97/o of its business.
